Though there is no sky, no earth, no ocean in this peculiar Barrier, you are here, and instinctively you know that it is more than enough. You clench the 'presence' of your missing left hand, held high over your head as you hold Er Yin Long close with your flesh and blood arm, protecting her from the effects of your power. You hear her whisper something against your shoulder. “See-foo....”

Though the effort is largely pointless, you close your eyes anyways, feeling the surging tides in the distance, the titanic movement beneath you, and the rumbling heavens waiting to disgorge waters and winds and white-hot death at your command. You feel Er Yin tremble a little, and this time it is not from emotion or crying, but fear.

You focus your mind on that power, and feel the waiting energies, the air and the electricity in the sky. Rather than clenching or controlling that power....you unclench your hand, let your control loose. And whoo boy does it fuckin' have an answer for you.

The thunder that crashes around you does so with the flicker of even brighter light on the other side of your eyelids, prompting you to open them for a split second. You immediately close them, the white hot flash of ultraviolet limned lightning not inches away from you and Er Yin enough let you know that you are in real danger of being blinded. The only thing that protects you from being utterly deafened is the shell of your presence around your body, around Er Yin. Bolt after bolt lashes around you, the winds howling and the thunder a roar instead of singular booms.

The first cracks in the Barrier happen instantly; after the second and third strikes, you feel the Barrier quivering, the world of the spirits and the human world trembling against each other. It tacks only a few seconds, before the lightning storm overwhelms the Barrier, and you rein the power in tightly, forcing it into the unclenched hand that does not exist. And just like that the power is all yours again, waiting patiently for you to unleash it.

You feel the Barrier collapsing, sense the world rebuilding itself around you. Landing lightly, making sure you touch ground first before she does, allowing you to set her down, though it is a bit awkward given she is about four inches taller than you are. The soft murmur of Miko-Kiku's chant is the first sound you hear, and then the gasp of Er Yin as she lets her feet on solid flooring for the first time in an eternity. Miko-Kiku's chanting ends and she walks slowly over to where you and Er Yin stand before the altar, her golden eyes bright and steaming. Standing up, still holding the dragonette, you get your first look at Kiku's lover, since the Barrier kept you as blind as Er Yin is.

To your surprise, she appears much more the warrior than the scholar; she is very well muscled under a layer of softness that leaves her only slightly less endowed than Kiki and with nicely thi- er, developed thighs. A white silk qipao dress with short sleeves and reaching only down to her thighs reveals what Miko-Kiku meant by 'strong signs of her heritage.' The thick metal scales along her hips and thighs are impressive, but her forearms, calves, and her upper back are entirely made of silver metal and nearly black flesh. Her scales seem limited to good sized ones her temples and her hips and then large plates along her thighs and upper arms. Her tail, lower arms, even her fingers seems to be solid metal, unnaturally supple and bending easily.

Her tail is huge – at least as long as she is tall, and tapers from nearly seven inches to a mere three at the end, half flesh and half that flexing, unnatural silver. The last foot-and-a-half is thick ringed plates with some wicked looking angled spur-plates that you would be hesitant to touch with bare skin and a wicked spear tip with a flat plane and two angled ones atop, like a yari spear end. Er Yin's horns are strangely shaped: thick, extending to the sides, and then bent back and folded or deeply grooved. Pale silver-blue irises edged darker blue surround unchanging pupils. Most striking is the dark scarring across her face – a jagged-edged X-shape that is partially hidden by her spiky shock of silver hair. Even her eyelashes are delicate silver filigree. That doesn't look like two cuts; it looks like a single injury, or desperate repair work on what had to have been a worse injury. She only look a little older than you do.

This is a scholar?!

You carefully relax your grip, the sense of incredible power gone, along with much of the smoke in the room. The seals remain, however, and the sense of their power still remains. Kiku smiles, and bows deeply to you. “Hey, onee-chan, look what I found. Can I keep her since she followed me all the way home?”

Quite naturally, Kiku's reaction her hair bursting into flame-like life and her sleeve coming up to cover her cupid-bow mouth. “B....baka-dragon!” Of course, the fact that she's blushing deeply takes a lot of the sting fro – well, you never gave her insults much thought anyways.

“Well, I hope that means yes, because I don't think I could really put her back now.” Er Yin Long is smiling, though she is struggling to keep a serious face. “Er Yin Long, welcome to the little fortress my family calls home for now. Someone is here to greet you, obviously. She still has a dirty mouth, but I haven't had time to wash it out with soap.” Kiku's eyes are huge, as if she can't believe you just said that to her lover.

The dragonette stands, somewhat shakily, her hand remaining on your hip as she takes a careful step back, pausing as her bare foot – well, talon, really – steps on one of the willow-wands Kiku placed. Stepping over it she faces in your general direction, and slowly bows from the waist. “Ryuu Ryukusa....you have my thanks and gratitude for releasing me. All I have is yours to command.” She rises again, her tail slowly shifting from side to side behind her, half curled up wards. Part of it rests against the ground, as if to steady her. “I believe that you would say, 'please take care of me,' would you not?”

The expression upon Kiku's face is adorable, the eyes of a child who has received a present far greater than the small gift they'd dared to ask for. Steam wafts up from her eyes, the gold in them glowing faintly.

Kiku's eyes bore into you like daggers and she lifts her bejeweled inaw like she would strike you dead with it. You wink at her and she relents, sighing softly. The long, heavy tail collapses and the end slowly slides back and forth on the carpet, and Miko-Kiku steps close, letting the tail find her zori. It immediately wraps about her right ankle and she blushes deeply, looking down.

“In my country, scholars were also warriors. We were expected to study and practice from our health and protection. Many spirits are also strong, and one must be strong to deal with them properly, Ryukusa-san.” Her precise, softly cadenced voice is actually rather lovely to listen to. “I is it not so with your Clan?”

“So, true. Then, I shall leave you and Kiku-chan to your own devices. It has been far too long, and I am being rude. Please take your time, and I ask that you take care of my loved ones as well, please, Er Yin-sensei.” You bow again and she bows back, finally dropping her hand from your hip. “Just....do me one favor?” Miko-Kiku's eyes narrow and she looks at you suspiciously.

“You should endeavor to keep it down. Miku-chan's younger sister is still very innocent about many things.”

“....!....” Oh, yeah, Kiku is about to explode....but her knees buckle and her eyes turn up as she gasps softly. She doesn't fall over, catching her balance, but her cheeks are flaming.

“Yes, Ryukusa-san. We will endeavor to keep it down.” Er Yin bows again, and you glance at Kiku, who is gripping her sleeves tightly, head lowered, looking for all the world like she's been chastised or....that's a lot of Er Yin's tail that is hidden under Miko-Kiku's outfit....

Oh. WELL. MOVING ON.

You step out silently, locking and closing the door behind you as the long-separated lovers embrace, one speaking softly, the other steaming slightly. You lean back against the door, and smile as you hear the first soft gasp. Totally worth it.

The living room vibrating with power as Akari-niji-chan watches Kiki-hime and Yui-niji-chan face off in the center of the room. Their hands are clasped together, and both of them are sweating bullets. Between them is a potted plant that is writhing in the throes of their power – it is at once trying to grow wildly out of control while the branches and leaves die at a frightening rate along the outside edges. Both Kiki and Yui are dressed in simple black gi tops and hakama pants....though Kiki's is dangerously wide at the neck due to her assets.

Yeah, Kiki's definitely got bigger booms, but Er Yin definitely has dat tail and dose legs.

Slipping quietly to where Akari sits on the kotatsu, you look at the pair of contestants. “Isn't it kind of dangerous to have Yui doing this? She is Void, after all....” Akari hands you a cup of hot tea, the scent of peaches wafting from it. Her tail slides to rest along your back, the flower-shaped jade-like tip lightly stroking your arm through your kimono sleeve. You glance at her but she is watching them, her face giving nothing away.

“She needs the practice too, and any harm she does to Kiki-sama won't be serious, aniki. And if oujo-sama's power escapes her, Yui can take care of it.” You were actually kind of worried that Akari was still injured enough that she didn't want to risk working with Kiki's threat to her Stone nature, even though you only detected deep bruising before.

“And physical combat?”

“Yui-chan has a good grasp on brutal-fu....”

“On what?!”

Akari shrugs mildly. “It seems to be a kind of sumo wrestling technique. Lots of slaps and angry looks and shouting. It's mostly just brute force.”

“Huh. And Kiki-hime?”

“She can use a bo-staff and she practices kyudo.”

Well, you're not surprised at that – a lot of elite girls like archery, but the staff is a surprise. “Can we get her a yumi or daikyu?” It would be easier if she could make them herself, but without training it would be unlikely that she could manage it. It would also make her less of a liability if she could protect herself at range.

“Yes, aniki.”

You roll your head up and to the side, looking at her flatly. Her tail is still lightly brushing your arm, but she sips her tea lightly, ignoring your not-really-that-threatening glare.

“I think so. It would be good. Theory and practice....” You nod. The individuality of each spirit-child's techniques made actually teaching them how to do it nearly impossible. It was learned through experience only. With a perfect star of dragonettes, you could now learn from each other the best ways to cope with each others elements at least. Er Yin would be a big help for that too.

“Oh, and remind me to make Red Bean Jelly for Kiku-chan and Er Yin-sensei tonight.”

“Okay.” You close your eyes and sigh. She can always do that to you. You haven't the foggiest why it does that to you, that simple answer that makes you feel like you should ask if that's all she means to say. It's like some weird curse. Her tail tip slides along your arm slowly, the spines light and not harming the delicate silk of the robe at all.

“Soooooo....what's with the tail, niji-chan? Something bugging you or you just enjoying trying to tickle me?” That isn't what she's doing of course, and you lift your hand, reaching behind her to slide your fingers along the base of her tail, feeling the smooth scales and the delicate ridge of glassy jade scales along her spinal track. She stiffens for just a few seconds, then relaxes, her eyes going half-closed as you trace the edges of several of the jade-like scales.

The carnelian eyed dragonette considers carefully and then sets her tea down and slides off of the table to sit next to you, her tail coiling away from you to slide under the kotatsu. She leans against you and you slip your arm about her waist, laying your head carefully along her hair. You both watch the strangely fierce battle, which had crated a small drift of dead leaves and twigs many of which partially sprout shoots and leaves before dying yet again. The fern is writhing and fairly good sized despite the constantly dying, and both Kiki and Yui are shaking, their powers seemingly an even match in this situation at least, though overall it seems that Kiki is growing it faster.

Kiki's chest is heaving quite prettily, and Yui's short, almost stubby tail is sticking straight out, the bronze tuft a puff of spikes instead of a lion-like brush-tip.

“I would like to ask your permission to....well....” You glanced down at her and kiss her hair. She smells of crisp, clean apples, which you've never really figured out. Her hands flex and her fingers clasp together, nervously. You've NEVER seen her this nervous.

Despite her bizarre case of nerves, you let her take her time with it. That it's this monumental of a decision for someone as careful and precise as Akari-niji-chan means it would probably overwhelm most anyone else. So you relax, and wait patiently, your fingers gently stroking her hip through her skirt, petting her. Akari leans more heavily into you, and despite the solidity of your best friend's nature, she is soft and warm.

You watch your principle and your slave – though that's not even close to what either of them really are – duke it out, their wills driving the plant to live and die at the same time. Yui has caught her second wind, apparently, and the fern is receding slowly back towards the pot. You slip your hand from Akari's hip and lean close, murmuring to Akari. “You think she's working harder because I'm here, or because you're watching?” Your arm along her back, you caress the delicate jade horn on her right, your fingers exploring the strangely angular yet smooth surface.

Much like Yui, Akari shivers, and leans more heavily into you. She is still tense, but no longer wringing her hands. Which is good, because those hands would be like a freakin' meat grinder. You let your hand drift from her horn with a slow, final caress, and she makes a small noise deep in her throat. You whisper to her very softly, gentle, loving words; your lips lightly trace the soft, warm curl of her ear. “You needn't be afraid, or worried, niji. You will always be my beloved Akari, and I will always protect and love you.” Her cheeks bloom red, and she looks down, her hands in her lap. You can hear her tail tip pounding away under the kotatsu though.

Even with your reassurance, she is hesitant, and her tail slides under the kotatsu, seeking yours, which you obligingly manifest and let her hug with her own tail. It's totally obvious what she wants, of course, and you'll happily let her do it, but it will be sad to lose her as your niji-chan even if it means she's Yui-niji-chan's husband. Or wife. It's really hard to tell with those two. You let the soft, delicate fan of your tail tip encloses her floral jade tail tip, and you squeeze her tail with your longer, softer one, the blue-black fur tickling her from her little smile.

She takes a deep breath and you lean back a bit, your hand about her hip once more. You really need to get her a pair of rings, of course. Maybe Er yin-sensei can help you with that.

“I want you to adopt me.”

“Well, if you really....what?”

She smiles shyly and looks down. “I would like to be Ryuu Akari. I want to be one of yours, not Clan Ryo, or Hebiki Family. With Yui and Miko-Kiku. Outcast together, but with you.”

Not entirely what you were expecting, but it makes sense. “Well, if you would like to....though really I always considered you mine anyways. But we can do that privately, later.” You smile and kiss her temple, and her tail squeezes yours lightly in response; it's hard to miss the feel of her heart racign with the pulse in her tail.

“And Yui too?”

Okay, now she's just planning something.

Her eyes are huge and bright as you slide that ring of scales and muscle around her tail, pulling lightly, your fin brushing back and forth. She shifts her weight from one leg to the other, squirming as little as she can. “But then, I did say Yui-chan and Akari-chan should, could, have some time with me, I think. As you've been sitting your other niji and the princess have been driving the poor fern between them mad; it's fully three feet tall and wide enough that it encompasses both of their legs entirely. There is a similarly large pile of dead leaves, twigs, and seed pods strewn about the pot, which is nearly buried in detritus itself. You can feel the water balance of the fern, and surprisingly, despite their powers, it is actually quite healthy.

You place your one hand over theirs, and push a sliver of your power between theirs, feeding it to the plant and affecting it in ways their powers are not. To their credit, neither one breaks eye contact with the plant or lets their power spiral out of control – impressive for an afternoons work!

Kiki has been essentially growing the plant, forcibly making it live its life cycles faster and more powerfully, affecting it from the inside out. Yui has been drawing life force from the plan, draining its chi into the Void as quickly as its life cycle could produce it, killing the plant from the edges in. Your power, unlike theirs, doesn't affect the plant – it affects the way their powers work.

So, it occured to me
Oba is not a dragon herself but a snake deity. She claimed and held horobi's pearl for power before our mother ate it. And has been trying to breed a reincarnation for horobi. we thought it was because she wants it leashed but maybe she would content herself with getting a replacement horobi pearl

Now, despite being a pearl snatching goddess, she has taught everyone in her clan that it is actually Hinata who is a pearl snatcher and to avoid her at all costs. But she never snatched up kiku's pearl. I am thinking that maybe the old snake lied to us about hinata.

You open your Water Eyes – Kami, you are so glad you're not injured, you forgot how fun this stuff was! - and look at them, seeing how they are doing. They're both healthy, if tired, but their bodies aren't in any danger of a loss of energy of any sort.

More importantly, you can see that Kiki-hime is calling on that perseverance she learned while suffering under the hands of the doctors and scientists, keeping her powers under control the way she kept herself from falling apart. She has the potential to be a great warrior, with the right teachers, and she's aware that she has potential, even if it's been badly misplaced. Her will is strong, her heart is pure, and she really does want to prove she is worthy to be your bride.

…..well. Uh....anyways....

Yui is not unfamiliar with her own powers, untrained as they are. She might be largely ignorant, but she has the resilience and stubbornness of her people. Whatever it takes to make Akari happy, to make you aware of how much she adores you, she will do it. Even after all the abuse and disdain she's suffered from, she won't make you sorry you took her on as a servant – a REAL servant, not a slave or a dumb dog to kick.

You withdraw your power first, and theirs quickly stabilize, returning to the contest with a vengeance. “That's enough – you can stop now.” It's lovely to see them both happy, safe, and so intent on growing....you close your Water Eyes and look at each of them.

You both did very well.”

Kiki is breathing heavily herself, and it does lots for her her appeal. She smiles and looks down shyly. “Yui-san and Akari-san have been helping me a lot.”

I was thinking about barrier combat.
We have 4 styles to choose from, and for a while I saw no rhyme or reason as to why we would choose one over the other.
But with the experience from the various fights I think we can come to some conclusions

Our 4 attack options are
1. psychological
2. magic (elemental)
3. physical - dragon form
4. physical - magic weapons

>1. psychological
This has been stated to be the most difficult (neigh impossible) to heal. Meaning the victim is ruined for life. It is an extremely cruel style meant to inflict permanent mental anguish on an opponent for a lifetime mental torture. rather then the mercy of a quick death.
We have also learned that using it against someone who is attacking aggressively means we are taking their blows and suffer horrible injuries. In general this is not an effective combat style, but a way to curse someone to a fate worse than death at the cost of great injury to ourselves. We really should avoid using it the future.
The only reason to use it would be as a bluff to scare an opponent away from fighting us (oh shit they are using THAT! I am totally going to win this battle but end up with incurable mental scars, fuck that, running away now!).

I think dragon form sacrifices dodging for armor. As well as our attack having some elemental influence (not as much as magic). The choice depends on what we and opponent are armed with. If they are armed with the uber sword of slaying dragons then dragon form is probably a bad idea. On the other hand, if they are faster/better at swordplay but have weaksauce weapon we should take dragon form.

Her perfectly straight face and casual comment sends both you and Yui into screaming hysterics, and Kiki-hime is looking somewhat lost and VERY embarrassed.

We have 4 major styles (mental, elemental, dragon, weapons). then each one has 3 sub styles. then each of those choices has 2 sub choices, and each of those leads to 1 final ultimate attack (I think the ultimate attack is determined by the major style rather then by every single choice on the path to it, but i am not sure).

Another pair of eyes opens above you, and you look down at Kumatori Kiki calmly, even as you look at her through your sapphire eyes, gentle and calm, and feeling soooo goood.

She sees me as me....and as the reincarnation of her deity.” Kiki's eyes widen, and her fingers slide along your hair, stroking your head slowly, before she brings them to bra on your other horn. Er Yin Long is a devoted worshiper of the Kamuy Fuchi, an ancient, powerful deity who is both kind and a mistress of sorcery. She is the teacher of humanity, but also the one who creates communities. Her devotion to the Kamuy is absolute, and while she revers what Ryukusa could become, she is enamored of Ryukusa for whom she is. She is trustworthy, and will not deceive or lie to Ryukusa or her loved ones. Her dedication to Ryukusa is true and absolute, in no small part for returning her to her beloved Kiku.

She will do everything in her considerable power to help Ryuu Ryukusa.

Akari looks at Kiki-hime....and shakes her head, once.

Kiki-hime slowly backs away, and lays her hands in her lap...and starts crying softly, as Ryukusa slowly waken from the trance.

We were on the cusp of getting another major injection of power and memory from horobi. they would cause our recently healed pearl to crack again as it rapidly enlarges and engorges with power, too fast.
Ryukasa would gain a lot more power and regrow her hand, but will suffer from "soul pains" and who knows what else while her cracked pearl heals
Er Yin can help us tap into the power slower and without said issue, but that required kiki to back off there.

The fact that you were previously injured and that the sword was the Grass Cutting Blade meant you were at a severe disadvantage. Fully healed, Ryukusa could have taken those hits, especially after the damage she inflicted on Kushinada.
