In an age long past… evil flooded over the land. Creatures awash in the dark tide ran wild, pushing mankind to the brink of annihilation. In its despair, mankind appealed to the heavens, and from a blinding light came hope.

The Sacred Stones.

These five glorious treasures held the power to dispel evil. The hero Grado and his warriors used the Sacred Stones to combat evil’s darkness. They defeated the Demon King and sealed his soul away within the stones. With the darkness imprisoned, peace returned to Magvel.

But this peace would not last…

Before we begin, let me tell you about myself. I am…

I am a knight of Renais. I may be young, but that won’t stop me from doing my duty! Well, okay, I’m not a knight yet. But General Seph and Prince Ephraim have recognized my talent.

There has been some strange talk in the castle lately that might put my training on hold though. They say that Grado has invaded and is making their way to the capital.

Prince Ephraim is about to ride south with a company of soldiers.

I volunteer to go with my prince. I can’t sit back and do nothing while his highness puts his life on the line! It’s a long and grueling march towards Renais’s southern border with no traces of Grado forces, much to my relief.

I can’t say I’m looking forward to fighting, but it is my duty.

We have stopped for the night. I’m on watch with a blonde knight named Forde. He’s staring out into the night while scribbling on some parchment.

“What are you working on?” I ask, trying to peek over his shoulder.

“I’m just sketching the horizon, it keeps me focused and awake.” He doesn’t turn to look at me, just at his sketch and back to the south. “Sorry, but what’s your name again?”

“Oh, it’s…”

“Oh, it’s Melarracal, or Mel for short.”

He nods. “That’s a nice name.” He finally puts down his charcoal and parchment and looks at me. “I take it you haven’t been a knight very long?”

“Well, I’m still just a Recruit. But I’ve been told that I have a lot of potential!”

“A recruit? Do you know my br-“ He stops suddenly as hear the clinking of armor.

I pick up my lance from the ground and Forde stands up, looking around.

“Don’t worry you two.” A man’s voice says behind us, causing me to nearly jump out of my armor!

Forde doesn’t seem that surprised though. “Ah, Sir Orson, are you here to relieve us?”

“You are correct, Kyle and I will be taking over now.” I spin on my heels, still holding my lance close to my chest. The man talking has brown hair and is wearing silver armor. Next to him is a green haired young man with matching green armor.

“Thank you,” Forde bows his head in thanks and I do the same.

With that, we head to our respective tents and the night passes quickly.

After hours of marching, our forward scouts bring news of Grado soldiers to the south. Prince Ephraim announces that he does not wish to start a fight, but we are to defend ourselves if necessary.

As we approach, the Grado army brandishes their weapons and begins marching towards us.

Our two armies meet and the Grado soldiers begin their assault. Battle has started, and I feel a terror gripping me as an enemy soldier charges me, his lance level and poised to thrust.

He’s almost here! It’s kill or be killed!

He trusts his lance towards my chest, but I manage to dodge it easily by turning to the side.

As the soldier pulls his lance back I thrust mine into his neck, causing blood to spray out. Watching him fall off my lance and into a pool of his own blood horrifies me.

I feel sick…

Horses ride past me as I heft my lance and begin marching again.

The screams of the soldiers and the clash of metal ring out through the fields. I put that all aside as I focus on staying alive.

Either through dumb luck or divine intervention, I dispatch another soldier without getting hurt. I hear some screaming coming from behind and I turn to see a group of our archers being attacked by enemy cavaliers. Prince Ephraim is near them fight off a smaller group of Cavaliers alongside Forde and Kyle.

The Archers need me more!

I don’t care what it looks like, I turn my back on the enemy and hurry to the back. I get a some disapproving looks, but a few soldiers follow me after seeing where I’m heading.

I reach the enemy Cavaliers and catch one of them by surprise, stabbing him in the back and causing him to fall of his horse. The Cavaliers are quickly routed and the Archers are safe to fire on our enemies once more.

The battle is in our favor. Sir Orson is leading the main force and decimating the enemies main force, quickly forcing them to flee.

Prince Ephraim orders us not to pursue, for which I am grateful.

We set up camp just off the road so we can tend to the wounded, but I find myself trembling as I help put up the tents. The stench of blood fills my nose.

Once we’re set up I stare blankly at the battlefield. “I-is this what war is like?” I could feel my heart pound while I was out there. I was, no, I am scared.

“Mel?” A familiar voice calls to me from behind. I turn to see Forde walking beside Kyle and Prince Ephraim.

“Y-your highness!?” I quickly bow before him.

“I was told we have you to thank for saving our Archers.” The Prince says thankfully. “When you first volunteered, I was unsure if it was a good idea. I am glad to see that I was wrong.” He has a gentle smile which helps put me at ease. “If there is anything you need, please, don’t hesitate to ask. We’re all on the same side after all!”

“Thank you your highness.”

With a polite nod he and Kyle walk back to the center of camp while Forde stays and asks, “How was it?”

“E-excuse me?”

“Your first battle? I remember mine, sure, it was just against a group of brigands, but it still terrified me.” He looks genuinely worried for me.

Laughing he corrects me, “Please, just Forde.”

“Alright, Forde.”

I head to my tent and remove my armor, the previously bright blue metal covered in dirt and blood. You quickly wipe it down before you sleep.

---
In the morning the camp is torn down and we ride south once again, albeit off the main road to avoid an ambush.

Near midday our scouts bring news of a fort under Grado control. The prince believes that if we retake that fort we will severely weaken Grado control in the area, as well as gain access to the supplies there.

The prince takes an elite group consisting of Sir Orson, Kyle, Forde, a few soldiers I don’t know the names of, and himself to sneak into the fort and open the gates for the main force.

They leave almost immediately while the rest of us follow at a distance.

When we arrive we approach the main gate and already can hear the sounds of combat from inside.

A handful of soldiers are outside and take up defensive positions around the gate. They are dispatched quickly enough.

While we wait for the gates to be opened, the acting commander splits us into two groups. A small group to join with the prince, and the much larger force that is going to guard the gate in case of stragglers, returning scouts, or reinforcements.

I am put in…

I just want you guys to realize we're not even a first tier class yet, we're a fuckimg trainee. We're not a cavalier. We're not a soldier, not an armor knight.

We're a recruit and can die terribly easily, so the more comrades we have while fighting, the better.

>>
>Rolled 96

I’m put in the group in charge of watching the gate. We’ll be the first line of defense should enemy reinforcements arrive.

As soon as the gates are opened the assault force rushes in.

The rest of us on guard duty pace around anxiously.

The acting commander orders me to be part of a group to scout around the fort and make sure there aren’t any enemies lying in wait.

We make it to the back of the fort where we encounter a man in a dark red cloak, his face obscured by its hood. With him are four men with swords. They appear to have exited through a false wall, presumably the same one Prince Ephraim had used to enter the fort initially.

“Stop right there!” My squads appointed leader shouts. “Lay down your arms and we will let you live!”

The robed man motions toward us with his hand and his guards charge forward.

An archer that was assigned to this group fires an arrow, but it merely grazes on of the swordsmen.

My commander rushes forward along with another knight to meet them in the middle and our Cavalier moves to approach them from the side. I move up as well.

The swordsmen are well trained, but not coordinated. I’m able to pick two of them off while they get in each other’s way. My commander pierces one of the remaining ones through the heart, and the other is taken down by our Archer.

The man in red doesn’t even flinch. He looks right at us, death in his eyes, and pulls out a tome bound in black leather.

My every instinct says to flee. That he will kill us all. I can feel myself breaking out in a cold sweat.

No, I can’t run. These are my allies, they’re counting on me! I-I have to fight!

The man in red starts mumbling something in a strange language as the Cavalier races towards him. Our Archer knocks an arrow as an orb of darkness appears around the horses head causing it to come to a sudden stop, throwing its rider off in the process.

I ignore the poor creatures tortured cries and follow my commander and the Knight in a charge against the mage.

The archer hits the mage in the gut, but he barely reacts.

He mumbles some more strange words and the Knights shadow envelops him.

I can hear the sound of metal being strained along with his screams.

My commander reaches the mage before me and thrusts his lance at his chest, but the mage jumps to the side, paying little heed to the arrow in his abdomen.

His dodge put him right in front of me though. I manage to stab him in the upper arm, causing him to nearly drop his tome.

He glares at me and begins mumbling again. My vision fades to black almost instantly.

I hear the clinking of armor and feel the air move as something is thrown past my head.

My vision returns as quickly as it went and I see the mage lying on his back with a javelin sticking out of his chest.

My strength fails me and I fall to my knees in relief. Out of the corner of my eye, I can see the head of the horse the Cavalier was riding and the sight nearly makes me vomit. It looks as though its flesh melted off and its eyes exploded out of their sockets.

I turn to look at the Knight and sigh. He has removed his helmet and his face looks mildly burned, but nothing that won’t heal in time. He also happens to be missing his weapon.

The Archer is crouching next to the Cavalier with a saddened expression as he whispers to him.

The Archer and I help him to the front of the fort due to him breaking a leg. The knight is fine on his own, but the commander stays near him just to be safe.

When we get to the main gate, we receive word that Prince Ephraim has routed the enemy forces in the fort.

A room is prepared for the wounded, and despite not having any physical wounds I am put in there as well.

“Dark magic tends to affect us in more ways than just physically my dear,” one of the healers tells me. “It can leave lasting mental scars that never heal.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean that it can cause you to lose your mind, or make you hallucinate. We should have no reason to worry about you though. I was told that the spell wasn’t finished before the Shaman was defeated.”

“So, I was lucky?”

“Very lucky deary,” the young woman chuckles. “Now please, get some rest.”

I lay down on a soft bed for the first time in days and the fatigue quickly catches up with me.

---

“WAAAAGHAAA!!”

I’m woken by a terrible scream coming from a nearby bed. The bed of the Knight who was with me earlier.

He’s sitting up and panting franticly. Sweat is pouring down his face as he runs a hand through his short black hair.

From the opposite side of the room I hear the Cavalier grumble, “Dammit, such a nice dream.”

He probably just had a nightmare and given what that Dark Magic did to him, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’ll be having nightmares for a while to come. “Hey, are you okay?” I ask the knight.

“I-I think so. That dream just felt too real. I felt like I was swimming in my own flesh.”

“Eww…”

“Eww, indeed,” he responds with a chuckle. “My name is Gareth by the way.”

“Melarracal.” There’s a bit of an awkward silence while we try to think of a topic. “Uh, thanks for saving me.”

“Think nothing of it. You would have done the same for me.”

Another awkward silence.

“Uh, how long have you been a Knight?”

“Almost a year now. I spend most of my time patrolling the castle grounds though, so I don’t go into combat often. But that never stopped me from training. I usually train any time I get the chance.” Another chuckle. “Some say training is my only hobby. What about you? Any hobbies?”

“Not really, I don’t have much time to do anything aside from training.”

“Ah, right, you’re still a recruit. Well, I suggest finding a hobby. It’ll give you something to look forward to after a long day.”

“Speaking of long days,” The Cavalier shouts from his bed. “Could you two please be quiet? I’m trying to sleep over here! I know you two had it rough with dark magic, but staying up all night isn’t going to help matters. Get some rest, or at least talk quieter.”

Sighing, Gareth says, “Do try to forgive him, Kellen is a hard to please kind of guy. But he is right, we can talk more in the morning.”

“Alright, good night!”

“Night.”

>>
When you wake in the morning you, Kellen, and Gareth are called to the main hall to speak with Prince Ephraim. With him are Kyle, Forde, and the other two members of your group from yesterday.

The Archer joins the three of you. “How’s the leg Kellen?”

“Painful, but at least the healers were able to fix it with their staves.”

“How are you feeling Chris? I heard you couldn’t keep your food down.” Gareth asks the archer.

“Much better now, as long as I don’t think about yesterday.” The shorter man shudders, causing his blonde hair to become slightly ruffled.

When your commander joins you, fully clad in his maroon and gold armor, helmet included, Prince Ephraim praises you all. “I’d like to thank you for your service yesterday. The Dark Mage you fought was a Member of the Grado army who was experimenting on innocent civilians. Sargent Hearthsted says that the five of you worked well together yesterday. As such, I have chosen to make you a team. A special squad that is to march and fight together. I hope I can call upon your services throughout this whole ordeal.”

With that we are dismissed.

“Kellen, go find another mount.” That’s the first official order Sargent Hearthsted gave to one of us. “Melarracal, Gareth, and Chris, get your gear and get ready to march. Grab Kellen’s while you’re at it too. We meet up at the main gate in thirty.”

It doesn’t take us long to pack our gear, seeing as how most of us haven’t unpacked anything. Once we’re marching ready we head to the gates. Everyone seems ready to go, except Kellen who’s nowhere to be seen right now. There’s still some time before we are supposed to begin marching. I wonder what I should do to pass the time?

[x] Talk to Chris, we've already met Gareth, we know Kellen's a jerk and wandering off when we were told to be ready is a bad idea.

Well, crap. I'd hoped to be able to at least see the next part, but it's 1AM and I've got final week of lectures in the morning. So unless you can guarantee a quick post, I'm hitting the sack
>>
I haven’t talked to Chris yet, and he is right there. I should get to know him if I’m to work with him. “Hi Chris, I’m Melarracal, nice to meet you!”

“Nice to meet you too. No offense, but it’s kind of strange having a recruit assigned to a team like this. But after yesterday, I think I can see why.”

“R-really? Why do you think I was?”

“Simple,” he says with a smile, “you work well in a team. You either distract or finish of a tough foe. Also, when we archers were being attacked, you rushed back to help us. Everyone cares about their allies, but far too many prioritize the front lines. You came to the back even though the fighting up front was still going on.”

“It was nothing.” I say feeling more than a little embarrassed.

“It wasn’t nothing, you saved quite a few lives by doing that. I owe you mine.”

“Seriously, don’t worry about it. I’m just happy I could help.”

“Alright. So, what do you think is taking Kellen and the Sergeant?”

Gareth pipes up and says, “Kellen will likely show up at the last minute, and the Sergeant is most likely with some of the other squad leaders. From what I overheard, we are not the only squad that was formed recently.”

Sure enough, just when we are about to march is when Kellen shows up with his new horse. He barely makes it before Sergeant Hearthsted arrives, lucky him.

“Alright everyone, get ready to move out. I want no chatter while we march. Keep focused and keep ready!”

“Sir yes sir!” The four of us promptly respond.

“Good, now move out!”

We are in the rear, protecting our supply convoy, when we come to an abrupt halt. “What’s wrong?” Chris asks as he tries to peak over the heads of other soldiers.

“Quiet!” The Sergeant commands.

After a few minutes we hear the prince’s voice, “Men, there is village nearby that has been assailed by bandits. We will rest there after we deal with their bandit problem!” A cheer breaks out among the men.

I suppose actually getting to rest in a town would be nice. Not to mention getting a proper meal.

We are led to an abandoned fort to the east of a small farming village. The fort is falling apart with barely any real protection, especially from the elements.

The prince wants two groups to enter from the north and the south, while the rest of the army surrounds the fort to prevent any of them from escaping and causing more trouble.

My squad is picked to enter from the west, while Prince Ephraim takes a group and enters from the east.

“Gareth, I want you in front, followed by Melarracal, Chris in the middle, Kellen and I will bring up the rear. Stay together and watch each other’s backs.”

The bandits have the western wall well-guarded. No less than a half-dozen thugs are guarding a massive hole in the wall.

They spot us at about the same time as we spot them.

How should I handle this?
[] Stay near Chris, someone needs to guard him
[] I should be up with Gareth.
[] Chris said I’m good at weakening enemies and picking weakened ones off…

Okay, I should stick to support right now. I’m not as strong or skilled as the others, but that doesn’t mean I can’t help!

There are two people with rather large swords, three of them have axes, and the last has a bow. I follow Gareth as he charges, but we’re passed by Kellen who swings his sword at one of the brigands with axes, leaving a gash in his shoulder. Kellen keeps moving and is using hit and run tactics.

Gareth is cut off by the two with swords while the injured axe wielder rushes towards me.

I stop my charge and take a deep breath. The bandit raises his axe above his head and I thrust my lance deep into his chest.

I turn to help Gareth, but the Sergeant is already there and he doesn’t seem to need any more help. Instead I focus on the two other axe users. One of which has couple arrows in him and is barely standing and the other is already dead, his was cut off.

I run towards the last axe wielder as he is preoccupied by Kellen and stab him in the back.

“Thanks!” Kellen calls to me with a smile, his bright red hair blown back by the wind.

While I’m momentarily distracted, an arrow flies right by my face, barely missing me. “Ah!” It startles me enough for me to fall backwards!

“Melarracal!” Gareth rushes over to me and helps me up as the Sergeant covers us. “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine, sorry.”

He shakes his head as if to say, “Don’t worry about it.”

There is a garbled scream as the bandit archer falls over after receiving Kellen’s sword to his face.

I still have my cartridges for FE and FE:SS, and my DS can play them, so it's great to be able to experience the nostalgia
>>
“Is everyone okay?” Hearthsted asks, actually letting a note of concern slip through. After everyone, especially me, assures him we’re fine, we make our way into the dilapidated fort.

We encounter no resistance until we arrive at the center of the ruins where we find Prince Ephraim, Forde, Kyle, and Orson routing the remaining bandits.

Once the last one is dispatched the Prince congratulates us on a job well done and we head towards the town where we are warmly received.

Alright everyone, I'll pick this up again tomorrow. For now, I'll take questions, criticisms, suggestions, or just FE talk.

While it might be good for our ego, I don't think us never getting hurt is good for tension. I know in the game, you had to having healing salves or healers to take care of injuries, but we can still take some hits here and there, even if it's just scrapes or bruises.

By the way, what kind of armor are we wearing?

Also, if you run tomorrow, when are you starting? I have work tomorrow evening.
>>
>>33256482
>Not getting hurt
Well, who said that you didn't suffer adverse effects from the dark magic? And yeah, I'll be dialing down the "Extremely fucking lucky" aspect soon.

>Armor
Familiar with Amelia? Think her Recruit outfit.

>Running time
I might start around Noon (EST). Don't hold me to that though, might be earlier or later.

Also, it is now archived.

Yeah, combat could stand to be longer and have us get a bit hurt. Also, we following the exact plotline or are we gonna branch out? I have no problem with either, but I am curious. Also how much of the SS cast will we meet?
>>
>>33256685
Well, we could either follow the main plot, or branch out. It depends on later choices.
>>
>>33256651
This is true, I'm just saying, lack of evident injury despite being in several fights now is a good way to kill tension, so I'll be glad to see that gone.

Yeah, I remember Amelia. After seeing this quest, I pulled out my SS cartridge and started a new playthrough on my DS for nostalgia.

Alright, I'll hopefully be able to be around for that. Is there a Twitter or something we can follow to find out when you'll be starting?
