You are Sireyi Valyenya, formerly of House Valyenya is a Paladin of Velya, the only one currently serving Velya, and the first to be called in many years.
18 years old, you have just finished your Paladin training.

You are on a quest to retrieve the Horn of Alzurad: a legendary artefact that can call dead heroes back to fight for the holder of the Horn.

You are aboard a ship, the Helana II, on your way to the Kingdom of Gorin, ruled by a man you were supposed to have married.

You have bought passage on a merchant vessel, and you and your companions are the only passengers.

The voyage is expected to take a month, with good winds.

When you boarded the Helana II, the Ships captain, Captain Fillre, made a few things very clear to you.
No fraternising with the crew (the crew are under the same order regarding passengers)
No interfering with the running of the ship
No passengers are to be on the gundeck (1 below the top deck) unless going down to the cargo hold (below the gundeck)
No Passengers on the command deck (back of the ship, where the wheel is).
>>
>>33222305
Your companions all agree to follow these rules and, after a little seasickness, settle down to life on board the ship. Matthias takes to training with a passion, tries his hand at climbing the rigging and is always active. Isla is constantly asking the crew questions about how everything works. Jianxi is generally a loner, and stand-offish, with an exception. 1 of the crew members on the Helena II shows similar colouring and facial features to JIanxi, she tries to engage him in conversation about this repeatedly but he refuses to discuss anything about where he comes from.

Ship time is slow time, boring, the weather is fine and there is nothing exciting happening. Fortunately, the last passenger of the ship was an avid reader of the Journals of Alaric the Mad – whom you loved reading about as a child.

Alaric the Mad was (is?) a traveller who went to see the entire world, writing about his travels, the lands he’d been to and the people he’d seen. He claimed to walk everywhere to punish his toes, which he claimed kept trying to kill him when he slept. He disappeared years ago on a trip to the Drowned Lands, never returning.

[Alaric the Mads travel journals will be used to provide short info-dumps on new places]

So in between training and talking to your companions you manage to keep yourself occupied. However, 3 days out on the ocean, something happens.

Whilst sunning yourself on a spare part of the deck, you hear raised voices, it sounds like Jianxi and Isla are arguing about something.

>Ignore them, keep getting some sun

You go to join Jianxi and Isla.
“You’re selfish, you don’t seem to care about anyone else and you barely follow instructions when we’re training.” complains Isla.
“I follow instructions fine” replies Jianxi, “Just because I don’t suck up to our glorious heavenly leader the way you do, doesn’t mean I’m not listening.”
“I am not sucking up” fumes Isla, “I am just following orders.”
“Oh I know exactly what orders you’d like to follow” says Jianxi in a sing-song voice.

Neither seems to have noticed you yet

“And what do you mean by that little jibe?” asks Isla, her voice dropping in volume as she frowns.
“Oh nothing, I’m sure” responds Jianxi, turning away from Isla “Just that you follow her everywhere, agree with everything she says and never have a bad word to say about her, hoping to make our way into Heaven are we, lady saint?”
“That’s rich!” responds Isla, her voice rising “From a light-skirted Bard – and yes, I heard plenty of stories about you from when we were at school – couldn’t wait to start courting as soon as you found someone who looks like you could you. I’m not surprised you’re no stranger to seamen.”

They are oblivious to you.

>Step in
With a fake cough, you get their attention, startling them both, and just in time too, the way Jianxi swung back around to face Isla, it looks like it could have come to blows soon.

With you standing there, they both shut up, until you ask for an explanation, at which point they both start talking over each other.

“Enough” you say, shutting them up “Now...”

“I’m sorry, I didn’t hear you” you say.

“No, alright!” she says “It wasn’t, I was asking Isla why she seems so happy following you around and she said she’d found her place in the world. When I said I was still looking for mine, we started arguing.”

“Isla” you say “Is that what actually happened?”

It all comes flooding out.
“Isla seems happy following you around, Matthias is slowly getting over his self-pity and I still have no idea where I came from, or who I am, or even ‘what’ I am, I mean, what in the Hells is a ‘Kugani’ anyway?!”

You stop her with a hug, she struggles briefly, but being a foot shorter than you, and weaker, she doesn’t have much chance. Eventually she stops fighting and clings to you, crying. You give Isla a look and she hugs Jianxi from behind.

As Jianxi is held tight in the circle of your arms you speak to her comfortingly "I don't know where you're from, who you are or what you are but you are without a doubt our friend" your words bring a fresh flood of tears from Jianxi.

You hold her for a few minutes as she gets it out of her system. Eventually she lifts her face to look at you, the tears have stopped but her face is still damp, as is the front of your tunic. “Thanks” she whispers “I don’t know what came over me”

Pick all those you want, mix and match, even the contradictory ones, I’ll hack together a final response from the most-picked options.

“You’re welcome” you say, still hugging the much shorter woman to your chest “After all, we are friends, or at least I’d like to be your friend, if you’ll have me”.
Jianxi nods mutely
“Now” you admonish “no more fights with Isla please” you look at Isla “or fights with Jianxi” as you try to be as fair as you can. After a pause, both agree.

“And don’t worry” you say to Jianxi, before you finally let her go “We will found out one day where you came from.”

In the dead of night, something makes you wake up suddenly, you’re not sure what exactly. Lying awake in your bed you wait....and hear something scraping along the hull, inches away from your head, drawing a tortured sound from the ancient wood of the ship. It’s like you’ve struck a reef or something, but that’s crazy, you’re in open waters. You continue listening and hear gurgling, as if someone was trying to speak through a mouthful of seawater, and a bad headcold.

What do you do? Pick all options you want, only first option is exclusive.

You wake your companions don your armour, and head up on deck.

As you come out on deck, you hear a scream that trails off into a gurgle, you see the ships lookout struggling with...something. It’s an overcast night and the ships lantern has been extinguished for some reason but thanks to your angelic sight you can see perfectly.

Your companions might not be so fortunate.

The ships look out is being held by two humanoid fish people that look like a cross between sharks and men. One is struggling with him, as the other strangles him.
You recognise them, though you’ve never met one.

Sahaugin – evil undersea monster-folk that prey on unwary ships.

Currently this is happening across the other side of the ship to you.

Focusing on your ability to detect evil, you easily identify both sahaugin as evil. You also detect about 40 or so sahaugin, below you and spread around the ship, possibly in the water or climbing the sides of the hull. Finally, you detect 2, much stronger sources of evil. One is amongst the sahaugin towards the rear of the ship, and feels like the magic of an evil god, possibly a sahaugin priest.

“The ship is under attack!” you yell, hoping the sailors will hear you.

As you order your companions forward into combat, you locate the second source.

The other one is very close by, in fact you only get a moments warning to throw yourself to one side as it comes over the ships railing right next to you.

A huge, perhaps 12ft-long monster has hauled itself on to the deck. It looks like a cross between a shark, a squid and a nightmare. With three eyes all atop one another it glares at you balefully, its fanged maw opening to swallow you whole as slimy, mucus-covered tentacles reach for you.

Fortunately, Isla has remembered a spell useful to the situation!

Speaking an incantation, a ball of light bursts from between her hands and flies upwards, handing near the top of the mast and bathing the whole ship in a bright light, the two sahaugin close their eyes and look away from the light.

You can feel the other sahaugin getting closer.

Its a Sahaugoleth – A product of Aboleths (intelligent magical underwater monsters) specially bred by Sahaugin to be stupid enough to accept training as a warbeast. It has no significant magical abilities but its tentacles secret a sticky mucus that poisons its target and (eventually) dissolves flesh. You can see it eating small holes in the ships wood.

Smite is ok, as the flash of light and the screaming target can be explained as ‘magic weapon’. Use of other abilities may be ok depending on how well you explain them. Default cover story is that Sireyi is a fighter, but players can pick one if you want to.

I mean, if we just use the halo, they'd probably assume it's a paladin thing, not necessarily an angel thing.
We are already using one of our other paladin abilities, after all.

Speaking of leveling Halo, are you guys leaning more towards Lightning Halo or Crown Halo as the special ability?
>>
>>33224044
Crown halo fits our mother's angel type
Lightning fits our mother's court
Both fit Sireyi IC but ooc I prefer crown since it fits our character archetype of being a FACE character
>>
>>33224044
Neither for a while. Other powers are more interesting, so that's only like 50 XP down the line for me.
>>
>>33224044

>>
>>33224044
I think crown is really interesting but we need our sorc powers and to learn skills from our team mates first
We're going to be one hell of a multi-classer if we do this right

>Success
You swing your halberd at the Sahaugoleth, calling on your Goddess Velya to aid you in vanguishing this evil. It’s tough, rubbery flesh is resistant to your blade, but the holy might of your paladin powers causes it to shriek in anger.

Your halo blazes into light around your head as you remember to keep your wings hidden by your illusionary disguise.

The Sahaugoleths many tentacles reach for you but you fend almost all of them off, one wraps tightly around your ankle. It jerks, but you keep your footing.

>Success
Matthias bowls into the Sahaugin, cutting two down, and fending off their attacks, he’s now fighting 4 at once, but not a single one manages to hit him.

>Success
Isla scrambles up the rigging, securing herself with a rope and then casting her spell, the spray of magical flame causes the sahaugoleth to shriek, almost as loudly as your attack did, but it refuses to let go of your ankle.

>Success
Jianxi finds the Sahaugin priest at the back of the ship, gurgling out orders. She sidles up to it and plants a knife in its back. Unfortunately it is protected by some foul magic and she barely scratches it. Despite her concealment its fishy eyes follow her and it gurgles and croaks, summoning a ball of inky-black liquid between its webbed hands, preparing to throw it at Jianxi.

You swing your Halberd in another strike at the Sahaugoleth, it roars in pain and anger.
The tentacle wrapped around your ankle gives an irresistible tug, jerking you off your feet. Prone, you are unable to effectively defend yourself and more slimy tentacles wrap around you, the mucus stings your skin and soaks your armour and clothing but has no other effect. Trussed up, you can hardly move. It begins to drag you towards its gaping maw.

>Success
Matthias springs to your side, his sword biting deep into the monster, causing it to pause and stop trying to eat you.

>Success
Another gout of flame from above adds to the cooked-fish smell the Sahaugoleth is emitting, further distracting it from Angel-tartare.

You manage to get the sahaugins attention and point out the dead sahaugoleth, their main weapon. Discovering their kin dying around them, and hurt by the bright light of your halo the remaining fish folk flee, diving over the side.

The remainder of the night is spent sleepless, as you help the sailors throw the dead sahaugin over the side and (with a great deal of effort) do the same to the Sahaugoleth.

Of the three sailors who fell in the battle, two are wounded and one is dead.

The next day the sailor is buried at sea, in a solemn ceremony overseen by the captain.

You make a note to ask Isla to learn a language spell of some kind, as soon as she can.

The next few days pass peacefully, though some of the sailors are spooked, jumping at any noises.
When the first evening of full moon arrives, you recall that you agreed to stay with Matthias through the night, he only asked you to stay with him.

>I’ll stay with Matthias alone
>I won’t stay with Matthias
>Some of the party will stay with him (who)

And where? You didn’t tell the captain or crew that he was a werewolf

>In one of the cabins, keep it a secret
>In one of the cargo-cages in the hold, though only thin wood, they should slow Matthias down long enough for me to cast the control spell.
>Tell the captain (optional)

The method of control in case Matthias loses it is a magical spell on a scroll. It needs to be cast any time it is to be used, but it is re-useable and does not need a mage to use it.

Am I the only one who finds it weird that WE'RE deciding whether others will stay with him? I mean, I don't see why we'd order them to stay so surely the question would be if he minds the others being around/whether they want to be there (not all the time presumably, but still),

Tell the captain. Stress that he has not once lost control, that we do have a failsafe if he does and that we can subdue him if even the failsafe were to fail.
>>
Captain Fillre is extremely displeased that you have bought a werewolf on board without his permission and blusters that he should have you all locked in the hold for the rest of the trip. Nevertheless you manage to get him calmed down somewhat and convince him that you can handle it.

He leaves you with a warning that if Matthias loses it and attacks you, he’ll not order his men to help. You feel you’ve used up whatever goodwill you gained by helping save his ship and crew.

Matthias explains beforehand that the first and last nights are easier, it’s the middle night were things are the hardest.

The first night of the full moon passes uneventfully, you stay in Matthias’ cabin as he strips off and sits on the floor, keeping his back to you, blushing slightly. As night falls the change occurs, his body arching in pain he growls as hair grows from his flesh and he puts on a foot of height, 100lbs of muscle and grows wicked-looking claws and fangs. It takes about 10 minutes in all.

Once it is over he partially turns, facing you “see” he says, strain evident in his voice “nothing to it.”

On the middle night however, the change is more violent and as soon as he starts changing he thrashes and writhes on the floor, growling and yelping incoherently.

>Matthias, fight the beast, control the change!
>Matthias, let the change come, just like we discussed

You talk to Matthias gently, urging him to give in to the change and guide it, rather than fighting it every step of the way.

He appears to listen to you and the change goes smoother. When it’s over he climbs slowly to his feet and turns to face you, fortunately the thick hair on his body is keeping his modesty intact.

He seems more agitated than last time, his head jerking around as if he realises the tiny space he’s trapped in. Breathing in deeply through his nose he turns to face you “Sireyi” he rumbles slowly “You smell...nice...” He takes a step towards you.

“No it wasn’t, of course I’d help a friend” you say, attempting to reassure him. He’s quiet for a long time before speaking.

“Thanks” he says.

The last night of the full moon passes uneventfully. Matthias controls himself.

The rest of the voyage passes almost uneventfully. Almost.

3 Days before you are due to make port, almost at the end of your trip, you are sitting in your cabin during the hottest part of the day. The last few days have shown a stiff wind, but a boiling hot sun and a calm ocean. Because of this the captain has ordered most of the crew to remain below decks, keeping the minimum number required to run the ship on deck.

Jianxi comes running in to your cabin “Sireyi” she gasps out, “come quick!”

What now? You wonder as you follow Jianxi.

On the command deck Matthias is having a shouting match with the ships captain whilst two sailors have restrained a terrified-looking Isla. A third sailor is picking himself groggily up of the deck, blood streaming from his nose, at Matthias’ feet.

The captains pride and joy, the mechanical Guide, has a panel removed, revealing gears within it.

The captain is screaming loudly.

“I told you none of you come up here!” he yells in Matthias’ face “She’s broken it and I’ll have her hide, 50 lashes!” he screams.

“What’s going on?” you interrupt the captain as he pauses for breath.

“Your little friend” he indicates Isla “Broke my Guide, if I wasn’t such a forgiving man I’d have her thrown overboard!”

“As it is” he continues “I’ll have her tied to the mast and whipped!”

Other than the missing panel, the Guide doesn’t look broken, it’s whirring and clicking away normally.

If true, she needs to be punished and reparations need to be made. If, as I suspect, he is only angry because she looked at it, her punishment should be equally small.

No matter how this ends, she needs to be punished though. Breaching an agreement is not cool.
>>
“No one is being punished until I hear what’s happened” you insist.

“She deliberately sabotaged it!” insists Captain Fillre “My crew saw her!”

“Is that what happened?” you ask Isla, she looks uncomfortable.

“I just wanted to see how it works, I took the panel off but I didn’t touch anything inside, I swear.”

The captain disagrees, claiming his crew saw her with her hands inside the gears. He also calls her a number of uncomplimentary names.

Isla is telling the truth, she only removed the panel, nothing else. Captain Fillre seems upset that you doubt his word (higher DCs to talk him down).

Captain Fillre seems outraged that someone would tamper with his prized possession.

Since Isla didn't actually do anything wrong:
>Talk him down

Try each of these in the order listed.

>>33225722
I don't want to get thrown off the ship, kill (mostly) innocent people or have him try to kill us in our sleep.
>>
>>33225712

>Offer him money

We must compensate him for the breach of terms of service, but there's no way he's whipping the girl when she didn't even damage the thing.

If he's recalcitrant, we can make it clear that we can still break that thing it so he actually has something worth complaining about, but that would not be very in character. At any rate, we are not giving a party member up for flogging.
>>
>>33225736

Addendum - if he doesn't budge after being offered compensation, give him a redeeming treatment.
>>
>>33225712
>INSIST on takign her place at the mast.

She will feel bad for us suffering in her place, which is more than enough punishment. and then we find out exactly what this captain is really made of.

I'll maybe budge on the money thing. But not on the flogging. No one getting flogged over him lying his ass off.

>>33225730
>Since Isla didn't actually do anything wrong:
What? She did do wrong. First of all she disobeyed the rule where the captain forbid us to be in that area, second she tampered with other man's device. It doesn't matter if she simply opened it, she did it without permission. You wouldn't like it either if someone simply opened your prized car's door and sat in it to "just see how it looks from inside".
We should tell Isla never to do such things again.

“How about I help out with any...repair costs caused as a result?” you suggest.

After negotiating an exorbitant amount in return for letting Isla go free the captain wrings one last concession for you – that you, as her commander, will punish Isla yourself in a manner of your choosing. You are careful not to name a punishment or a timescale though.

You all retreat to your cabins for the rest of the day. Later, you hear a knock at your door, opening it, you see it is Isla. “Can...can I come in?” she asks.

Islas face when

You decide Isla will scrub the ship as a deckhand as punishment. Matthias decides to watch her in case any of the crew, or the captain, tries to make her punishment especially hard.

Before your voyage ends, you decide to seek out the sailor that Jianxi was talking about. You decide that asking permission from the captain would be a waste of time, so you and Jianxi go to talk to him.

Seeing you approach he makes himself busy coiling a rope. He indeed seems to be one of Jianxi’s people, stripped to the waist you can see he has the same skin colour as hers, though his is darker, perhaps due to hit life as a sailor. His facial features look a little like hers too.

“Go away” he says in broken common “not talking with you, no understand”

“You seem to understand fine” you say “I’ve seen you speaking to other sailors.”

“Go away” he insists

“I just want to ask some questions” you respond

perhaps, first we should get him to listen to us and to talk before we start firing of questions after questions? We first need to get on his good side.
>>
You try a soft approach at first
“Even if you don't want to talk about it, could you at least give us a hint so she can find out about her past.”

“Past better secret” he responds

Ok....

“What are the Kugani?” you ask “Where do you come from?”

“Kugani only civilised people in the world” he explains “All others savages. Kugan far, far to east, across much ocean, you will never find.”

“How about Jianxi, you ask?” indicating her standing beside you, up until this point she has been silent but now she speaks “Please, anything you can tell me about my past, anything at all” begging seems out of character for her, but she’s doing it now.

He pauses, pulling a few strands from the rope he is coiling, he lays them down on the deck in a swirling pattern “You know this?”

Jianxi’s eyes widen “Yes! That’s the same symbol I have-”

He cuts her off “Then you trouble, you very big trouble, you better off dead!” He storms away, unwilling to talk further.

Jianxi looks shocked, and maybe a little upset.

>What was that symbol?

>“All others savages. Kugan far, far to east, across much ocean, you will never find.”

"Well, at least we know where Kugan is"

Lets talk to the captain and other sailors about him and where they picked him up.
>>
You wrap an arm around Jianxi’s shoulders and give a squeeze, she seems both elated that she has found something out about her past, and depressed that it was so uninformative.
“Don’t worry” you say soothingly “At least now we know the Kugani are a people, which means there will be plenty of others who know about them.”
Jianxi gives a small nod, lost in her own thoughts

“What was that symbol?” you ask her.

“I don’t know what it means” she says “But I have a tattoo of it” She smiles, a little humour back in her tone “But you’ll need to at least buy me dinner before I show it to you.”

You enjoy a laugh with her.

With that matter resolved, the rest of your trip passes uneventfully. As the ship pulls into the main port of Gorin, your mind flashes back to 6 years ago, remembering your flight across the port.

Gorin hasn’t changed much in the last 6 years, the customs inspectors make only a cursory examination of the crew, passengers and cargo of the ship after the captain passes them some gold.

You leave the ship and enter the city, no one seems to notice or care about you, engrossed in their own business.

You can feel the Horn ahead of you, the Palace is in that direction, but then, so is most of the city.

You wander around town, the people go about their business, when the city guard appear, walking regular patrols, everyone finds somewhere else to be.

You see why, the city guard are quick to pounce on any perceived wrongdoing, harassing shop-keepers, arresting beggars, and frightening people.

You locate a cheap inn you can stay at then you visit the Church of Velya, locating it after a bit of searching. The direction of the Horn is always towards the palace, or one of the buildings near it – you’d need to get closer to be sure.

You finally find the Church of Velya, its doors are closed and nailed shut, boards are fill all of its windows and wooden planks have been nailed across any opening into the building.

A sign outside reads ‘closed at order of the King’. Well, it seems King Hallam is once again in one of his church-hating phases.

You decide a closer inspection of the Church is warranted. As you keep an eye out, Matthias loosens the planks nailed across one of the doors whilst Jianxi picks the lock. The four of you enter without anyone noticing. JIanxi reports that the lock wasn’t difficult to pick, and was well-oiled.

You walk through the Church, it looks like it has been abandoned for some time, although all the statues of Velya are free of dust. Suddenly you hear the sounds of footsteps approaching from the corridor. You are in the main hall, a wide open space with plenty of seats, an alter, and some alcoves, plenty of places to hide.

“Why is this place boarded up?” you ask. She looks at you quizzically.

“You’re not from around here, are you? I guess you’d better come with me.”
She heads towards the door she entered from

>Follow alone

Follow her alone, no need to scare the girl.

Because she can actually stealth.

>Everyone follow, Sireyi in the open, others hidden

You follow her, as your companions trail you both at a discrete distance. She takes you down into the basement and knocks in a rhythm on a heavy door. A few moments later a slot opens in the door and someone whispers something to her. She whispers back and the door is opened by a large man who looks like he knows his way around violence, despite having no visible weapons.
“Come in” says the woman, beckoning you inside, I’m sure the high priestess will welcome another wayward soul.”
It is highly unlikely your friends will be able to get in undetected.

“Actually, I have a few friends with me” you say, as your allies come out of hiding. The door man seems visibly perturbed but after a short conversation with the young woman, allows you all to enter without comment.

The young woman leads you through a serious of tunnels, tall as you are you need to stoop to get through some of them. You feel the walls pressing in on you, ugh you hate being underground.

Eventually you are led to a makeshift office occupied by an older woman in the vestments of a high priestess of Velya.

“Sister Danya” she addresses the young woman “Who are these people.”

“I found them in the Church upstairs” she responds “I thought they could help”

Shaking her head in disbelief, the old woman dismisses Sister Danya and introduces herself “I am Ariamya, High Priestess of the Goddess Velya, what may I call you?”

>I’m Sireyi, Paladin of Velya (drop disguise) and these are my allies
>I’m [covername] (keep disguise) and these are my allies

>I’m Sireyi, Paladin of Velya (drop disguise) and these are my allies

Okay, I really don't think we need to continue the deception at this point.
>>
>>33226764

Drop the disguise and introduce yourself.
>>
>>33226764
Make sure only the High Priestess and our allies are there. Then:
>I’m Sireyi, Paladin of Velya (drop disguise) and these are my allies
>>
>>33226764
>I’m Sireyi, Paladin of Velya (drop disguise) and these are my allies
activate halo and wings please
>>
“I’m Sireyi, Paladin of Velya and these are my allies” you say as your illusionary disguise dissolves, you spread your wings and your halo appears, in the privacy of her office you feel the disguise is no longer necessary.

High Priestess Ariamya’s eyes widen visibly “Of course you are” she says faintly, visibly shocked “Who else would come in answer to my prayers. Velya be praised.”

“What’s going on here?” you ask.

Priestess Ariamya bids you all have seats “It’s a long and sad tale” she says “But the long and the short of it is that King Hallam has gone insane, and his four captains are at each others throats, whilst ordinary folk are caught in the middle. The churches have been forced underground” she pauses for a chuckle “Literally in our case, after the King ordered all the priests and priestesses to leave.”

“I keep in contact with my counterparts in the other Churches and we’re trying to keep the Kingdom together to protect the common folk, if it falls apart, thousands will die as other warlords move in. But we have no long-term plan.”

She pauses and looks at you “But perhaps you can help us.”

She has made no mention of the Horn.

>I’d love to help but I have my own quest which I cannot speak about
>I’d love to help but I’m hunting the Horn of Alzurad

Don't take flight, but we haven't been able to use them for about a month and they're just like any other limb.
I don't want to get a cramp when we next try to fly.

>I’d love to help but I have my own quest which I cannot speak about, so I may not be able to help as much as I would like to.

Mention that we have our mission, but ask how we could help. And for more elaboration on the situation with the captains and the King. Does the king have heirs, or is he still hoping for Sireyi? Any royal relatives?
>>
“I have my own quest” you say cautiously, as you roll your shoulders and stretch your wings, a move that proves distracting for both Matthias and Isla “but there is no harm in hearing you out.”

“Tell me more the King, his viziers, and these captains.”

“Of course” she says “and thank you for listening to an old woman”

“First, the King, King Hallam was never...a good King, but his rule provided continuity, if nothing else. However, after you...declined to marry him he because convinced he was cursed. He closed all the Churches and recruited new viziers, ones who could offer him the favour of darker powers.”

“The king is ruled by his viziers, though he is still officially in charge. Of his 7 wives, only 2 still live, one died recently giving birth, and rumours claim her child was of infernal heritage.”

“We priestess’ do not go near the palace as we can clearly feel evil magics being worked there, and those working it might sense our presence – as they would undoubtedly sense you if you went.”

“Officially the kings eldest son, at age 10 is the heir to the throne, but he is fully under the control of the head vizier. Ralzuz Croyne, ugh, I met him once and my skin hasn’t stopped crawling.”

“Now, regarding the captains. They are distant enough from the King that I do not believe they are automatically under the control of that cabal of sorcerers who advise the king.”

“4 powerful mercenary captains are in charge of the Gorin Fleet, Army, Spies, and Royal Guard (police), respectively. The mercenaries are allowed to recruit within Gorin, use it as a base of operations and can hire out to other kingdoms if they so choose as long as they share part of their fees with the Gorin treasury and do not leave Gorin undefended.

The four captains could easily seize control from the king but are happy to let matters continue in as they are, as it benefits them financially and because neither completely trusts the others.”
>>
>>33227078

“My counterparts and I” she says, have discussed the possibility of encouraging the captains to overthrow the King, but we cannot agree on what should be done afterwards, who should rule.”

>I can’t help you, I have my own quest
>Why ask me
>I’ve decided I want to help
