For the record, you regret nothing. No matter how much pain and suffering you’re put through, at least you’ll be nursed back to health by Taira after she turns you to pulp. Then you’ll be covered in fluffy tails and all will be right with the world.

Back in reality, you shift your left arm slightly and reposition your shield after Taira nearly pushed it through you from sheer force. It had just been one blow, and you’re not even certain that she used all of her power, but it almost shattered your barrier and nearly knocked you off your feet. You redouble your efforts and create a new barrier.

Golden light stretches from your shield, creating a small band around your front, as you fill the world with your power. Your shield is the core of this, your magic focused within it first and foremost as it covers your body and the barrier protrudes from it. It worked wonders against most projectile attacks but you’re wondering if building the barrier into your shield might work against you for such strong attacks.

Then Taira hits you again – the blow is just as strong as the last one but you keep your footing solid this time. After all, she already broke your wrist but she can’t do it to the astral frame. Or so you hope. Before you have time to breathe a second blow almost as powerful as the first slams into you and pushes your footing off. You slide slightly, your shield swinging a little and it isn’t covering your body for a brief moment.

You catch Taira grin slightly.

Luckily you get your shield back in place before she hits you. Unluckily you don’t have the time to restore the barrier to full. Taira hits you with three blows. You really wish she’d just stopped at the second.

The first, as strong as the first two blows, shatter yours barrier and knocks your shield back into your helmet but experience keeps you stable. The second, similar to the weaker attack, clips you on the top of your head and takes out your balance from the top – you’d probably have lost your head if not for the magical protection.

There’s an instant between the second and third blows, long enough for Taira to notice you’re about to fall over and decide to hit you anyway. Or so you think – maybe you’re just feeling a bit sour in retrospect.

The third blow, massively powerful hits your entire frame like a stone wall moving at breakneck pace. It doesn’t so much as knock you down as blow you across the courtyard, your shield and armour absorbing the worst of the damage. Your shield practically disintegrates from the blow but the armour manages not to warp. Of course, you didn’t find this out until several hours later when you came to in Tsucchi’s lap as she and Undine try to heal you before you died of massive internal bleeding. You don’t think you’ll be sparring with Taira like that again.

On the plus side, you think you have a better way of structuring your astral barriers.

Out of all your girls, Sarah is the one who acts the most on feeling like she hasn’t gotten much of you lately. Or maybe that’s just because she’s the one who spends the most time away from you. Last time you returned she dominated a large amount of your night time with fun. When you suggested a private dinner and she suggested in her bedroom, you made the assumption that the fun would come after the relatively serious dinner. Instead Sarah decided to mix the two, her outfit leaving very little to the imagination, although you didn’t need to imagine much at all about her. You’d been a little worried that meant she wasn’t interested in talking politics but she started the topic anyway as she held her forkful of paste in front of your mouth.

“Was it really smart leaving so many vampires alive and cooped up in a camp, Talon?” she asks as you chew the food. “Taour’s a pot ready to boil over – a handful of executions might not pacify them if they know most vampires are still alive.”

You idly watch the way Sarah’s large chest shifts about as she gestures. Then, catching her fork as she tries to poke you and get your attention on her face, you respond, “The executions will do for now. The reconstruction will keep them occupied otherwise. Then the vampires can be reintegrated later.”

Sarah makes a pained expression as you say the last part. “Is that necessary?”

“I’m not going to kill them all and it’s safer to give them something to… unlive for, I guess,” you say, feeding her some pasta. “Some of them might even be able to help you.”

She frowns before nodding slowly. “I suppose somebody had to run their nation. And it’s not like I need to worry much about them doing anything to you, especially once Tsucchi can cure thraldom.”

Sarah mops up the rest of her pasta, no doubt planning to move onto other matters, and you move onto the next question before she drops politics entirely.

“What about the management side before that, Sarah?” you ask quickly. “Surely there’s something I can do to help your structure?”

Sarah pauses for a second, thinking. She has a finger sitting cutely on her chin as she looks you over before nodding with a bright smile, her mop of silver hair flapping about slightly.

“Pick some governors for the states so that when things quieten down they can immediately take up their new duties,” she says.

Before you can say anything more she vanishes under the table, only to reappear below you. As she practices the things she’s been learning of late you forget all about politics and administration for a night while you entertain Sarah.

As Sala tops up your cup with more brandy you’re now certain that she’s trying to get both you and Mal very drunk. You trade looks with him and notice that, despite this being his fifth goblet of brandy, he looks awfully sober. Then again, so do you. Ah, the wonders of magic.

Unfortunately, Finn was the collateral damage of Sala’s efforts. Your squire is swaying a lot as he attempts to sit in his plush couch – truly a herculean effort from him. Sala skips over his goblet, having already been glared into submission over trying to poison him with alcohol.

“So, Mal, how are things going with Neir?” Sala asks brightly, having had no more than a single goblet of brandy herself. “Well?”

“Still wanting to marry you?” you ask mischievously, earning a glare from your friend.

“You’re getting married, Archmagister? Congratulations!” Finn shouts, trying to rise from his seat at the ‘news’ and instead collapses into Sala’s arms when she catches his fall.

You shake your head as Sala giggles at the way Finn flares red at his proximity to so much of Sala’s bare skin. Mal instead remains sullen for a while before answering.

“I’ve told her we should talk to her father first,” he says. “Which turns out to be at the tournament as they’ve been invited. Along with all of her sisters.”

Mal gives you a smirk, no doubt picturing the results of your current harem meeting Neir’s three sisters. Given you know at least two have married recently you’re interested to see the husband’s reactions to seeing their behaviour towards you. As well as whether they picked up house-husbands or warriors.

“Ehh, that’s no fun,” Sala says. “I wanted something more entertaining. Say, Finn, have you ever had sex?”

Going impossibly red, Finn opens and closes his mouth repeatedly like a fish. Well, he at least knows the meaning of the word even if you doubt he knows precisely what is involved.

“No!” he shouts, trying to get out of Sala’s iron grip. “I already told Tsucchi that when she told me what it is. Why do you all keep asking me?”

Sala breaks down in giggles at the reaction as you ponder the fact that Tsucchi had recently told Finn about the birds and the bees. You have a feeling the women in your life might be a bad influence on the poor lad. At least he’s doing better at the combat side of things, though you worry about his use of magic.

“They keep doing so because they find it entertaining,” you explain to Finn as he waves his arms wildly looking for support. “But really, nobody in Terrnaine explained sex to you?”

Finn goes quiet at that. “Um, I didn’t spend much time around others. Well, not much good time. Only Esraveel was nice to me and she always got embarrassed when I asked those sort of questions.”

Before you can ask him who Esraveel is, Sala squeals. “You know Esra, Finny? That’s cute. I wish I was there to see her get all flustered when you asked her about sex. She was always so cute about those things.”

You stare at the pair with a loss as Sala goes on and on about how much fun she’s missed out on.

“Alright, I’m lost – I thought Malataine hated the elves?” you say. “How is it that you seem to know an elf, Sala?”

“Hmm?” she says, looking at you oddly. “They did but only as a front. We worked with them to fend off mages and god-knights sometimes – Esra was their best aspiring warrior back then. I guess she’s probably her best warrior now.”

Let’s see, it’s been a couple of decades since Sala was last alive, that means, “So Esra is about seventy or eighty?”

“No, no, she’d only be about sixty at most,” Sala corrects you.

“Esra went through the same process with her tattoos as you did, right, Finn?” you ask him seriously.

The young elf squirms and avoids your gaze, mumbling about promises and the like. This goes on for several minutes as he refuses to answer you despite Sala coaxing him. Eventually you give in – you haven’t probed into Finn’s past much and you don’t yet have reason to. If you get closer to Terrnaine you might need to but for now you can let him be comfortable.

Slow and not that great, even if we did get some major decisions out of the way. Next couple of threads will be dedicated to the tourney and diplomacy, after a brief scene with Karise at the start. After the tourney I’ll be doing the last decisions on a royal line, state governors and how to handle Termina.

Next thread will be on the 12th July at 6pm EDT. I may delay this for a week depending on what I get done after work.

On another note, I've been doing some thinking on the Battlemage Tower and have a proposal for you all. Instead of making it a simple tower, how about we make an imperial university with multiple majors Said university may or may not be named Hogwarts
You'd have the Battlemage track, but you'd also have magical and combat training for knights, a spellblade course, and an officer accademy type courses. In addition, it would have what amounts to a "familiar summoning for dummies" course, so knights and others with magical talent but little training can learn, basically by wrote, to get a combat or support familiar.
