House: Antioch
Totem: Raven

-Changes pending-

I'm Maria of house Antioch, and right now it looks like I might just survive that a day longer. After my newfound friends -I've decided they are friends- and I encountered a rock monster it turned out it -his- mistress was just like us a student here, though she's way cooler and can even cast spells already. I try not to feel jealous watching her explain magic to the slightly stand-offish former noble girl called Eriadne, but it's just so frustrating...

Deciding to distract myself I look into the book before me again.

"Should a Witch need to defend herself with weapons forged by mortal hands it must only be in the most dire of circumstances". Huh. I suppose that's what the Dragon Knights do. Still, it would be nice to spar against someoneā€¦ Admonishing myself to focus, I read on.

"Therefore, it is--"

"What does 'paramount' mean?" I ask, to no-one in particular.

"Very important, anyone knows that". I shoot Evangelyne a look which she ignores. Just because she's clever shouldn't mean she gets to show off, that's just not right.

"--to master the wand and stave, as has been the custom since time immemorial". I resist the urge to ask after that one. Hmm. Probably means "since long ago", anyway.

I move onto a small leatherbound black book with a golden triangle with an eye at each corner on the cover.

1/2
>>
>>33186898
"[FORCE]: A Compendium".

The first page depicts the drawing of an up-turned palm. Each finger has a small arrow pointing to a symbol, all different from each other. Strange, but maybe it will become clearer leater.

As I turn the next page, a small leaf of paper falls out. On it is a drawing in the same style as the book. Maybe a student copied it for class.

Oh whatever, might as well. I hold up my palm, then make a circle with my index and thumb. What was the next step? Oh. One small turn, make a fist and speak.

"Fires of eternity, flames everlasting, bestow upon this humble child the gift of your ra--"

Something wells up deep within me, a living, breathing, changing power, the shock hitting me so hard I jump up from my seat and almost fall before catching myself. THankfully this part of the library has a thick carpet so the THUNK of my falling chair doesn't echo too loudly.

Heart thumping, ears ringing I just stand there, hands on the smooth wood to keep myself from just keeling over. If I ever saw something this beautiful yet horrifying the memory must be gone from my head. I shake, and only a few heartbeats later realize that no, it's not I that is shaking, it's Helena standing on the chair beside me using her entire weight to make me sway from side to side.

Huh. How long has she been doing that? I croak something that doesn't even make sense to me, but she stops. I try to remember how to move and find it difficult, my whole body feeling more like a puppet than something belonging to me. Somehow, I manage to turn and pick up the chair, then sit down before realizing that everyone else at the table is staring at me too.

"...don'tā€¦ don't EVER do that again".

The smooth surface of Eriadne's voice is showing cracks, and though she tries to keep her face composed the corners of her eyes are twitching slightly. Weird what you notice sometimes.

Helena seems too shocked for words and Evangelyneā€¦ she's grinning. Like a girl who just won the price at the town fair, like a conspirator who found her equal, a joy that I, right now, simply can't place.

"Whud ah yu laffing about?" Goddess, but my voice must sound like the worst drunk's, all slurred and awkward.

She just shakes her head, still grinning from ear to ear.

"Didn't know you had it in you", she finally says, voice strained and barely under control.

"You see, most girls do it the first time after being shown -and trust me it hurts a lot less when you know what you're doing- but goddess, you have TALENT!". The last word is punctuated with an entirely unladylike slap of her open palm against the table.

Just then, the bell rings.

"Can you walk?" Eriadne sounds genuinely concerned though for some reason looks away while asking though she offers her arm.

She messes up, but it doesn't hold her back, and while she's kind of rough when put next to Eriadne, she's an all-around nice girl and her awkward bits add to her charm. I want to pat her on her head.
>>
>>33188863
I might remember wrong, but I think Evangelyne referred to "General" as "she" and iirc Eriadne quoted a female General at some point, does that mean the military is mostly female? Or is it 50/50 and they just defaulted to "she" for nonspecific Generals because they're girls?
>>
>>33188888
>What did we do? What did we doooooooo?!
Please wait warmly for the IC answer.
>Also is there a magic way of enhancing the body?
Absolutely, and most know at least a little about it. You start appreciating magic for the little things more than the flashy, world-shattering ones eventually.

There's just a certain quality of life improvement when you, say, don't get cold any more or move on a level of elegance that makes your previous excuses for walking seem like a toddler's first steps.

TL;DR: Yes, body improvement is a thing, though thorough, lasting changes are infinitely more complex than just gaining a strength boost or supercharging your hearing for a few minutes.
>>
>>33188930
Yeah, she his a lot of /tg/s charm points, honest, honourable not full of herself, and so on, and it does make her quite endearing.

Conversely, all the others have something that a good few people don't like; overly proper tsun, hyperactive loli and irresponsible know-it-all - positives to some, negatives to others - whereas Maria is a good girl for everyone.

Yes.

>does that mean the military is mostly female?
No.
> Or is it 50/50
No. It's still mostly men as far as mundane combatants go, and Witches /usually/ refuse to fight in regular conflicts unless they're Hedgewitches, healers or fulfilling other support roles.

Of course, if there is an extraplanar invasion EVERYONE fights and with everything they have.

There are a lot of women in the military. Less due to enlightenment and more as the result of most men dying a couple hundred years ago in a massive invasion that forced women to sign up, but the custom stayed around.

Had Maria not been called she could have been a ((>>33187286)) guardswoman like her father and ((>>33187232)) carried weapons, yes. It's not seen as the ideal career for a girl, neither would she be the only one in the country or even her city to have such a profession.

That's interesting, who invaded? Also, what's Helena's original faith like? What's the geography/climate like? I'm picturing something like eastern Europe, but I might be completely wrong.
Also, are there other sapient races? If there's men with traces of dragon blood, dragons at least used to be a thing at some point, unless dragon blood isn't literal.

Oh and, is every witch chosen by the goddess? Are there girls who get chosen but refuse to follow the call? What is the deal with hedge witches?

I'm sorry if I'm asking too many questions, I can't help it. It's too interesting.
OH YEAH before I forget, do they have indoor plumbing? Sure, they have trains, but one thing does not necessarily mean another.
>>

> there are reasons but none of them good so I'll spare you the excuses and instead try to speed up

>>33190073
>OH YEAH before I forget, do they have indoor plumbing?
Varies, but the school does, all but the most ancient of palaces do and your house did, by virtue of being funded by the government. Before you ask, no, most everything is purposely kept as free from magitech as possible excepting very low-tier applications such as security systems. It's just not seen as worth the risk and cost should something go wrong. A mundane mechanism will break. A magical mechanism will break and actively refuse to be put back together until you get a Witch or artificer on the issue, and good luck paying those rates.

>Oh and, is every witch chosen by the goddess? Are there girls who get chosen but refuse to follow the call? What is the deal with hedge witches?
Yes, it's her gift to Humanity. Refusal is rare, but happens. Hedge Witches are witches operating on the fringe of magical society and pretty much do whatever they want, whenever they want, just staying out of the way enough to not get a literal Witch hunt declared on them.

Cursing someone for money would be one of those things, and if you want to test the full extent of Maria's Mental Balance you're free to look for the records regarding those hedge witches that overstretched the Witch Council's patience and exactly which fun things were done to them.

> dragons at least used to be a thing at some point, unless dragon blood isn't literal.
Dragons were a thing. If they still are is a mystery, and so far nobody has stepped forward and presented evidence in favour or against their existence.

>Also, are there other sapient races?
Fae, if you want to stretch definitions. Goblins exist but are rare in these parts.
>What's the geography/climate like? I'm picturing something like eastern Europe, but I might be completely wrong.

Fairly moderate climate with heavy winters and mild summers. Lots of hills.

>Also, what's Helena's original faith like?
The Shining Lady Athra is the goddess of new life, spring, music and healing. Usually worshipped by artisans, craftsmen, housewives and farmers. They run hospitals and orchestras as their main means of worship, each member believed to be a leaf on the tree that is their church.
>That's interesting, who invaded?
The Outer Void, a place badly understood from which regularly monstrous creatures invade through portals in order to try and occupy the land for themselves.

"Yes, I c--"

I take a few steps, already short of breath again. Dammit me, this isn't the time to go stumbling about like a bride on her maiden's farewell, not that I've ever seen one but that's probably what it would look like. Eriadne is still holding her arm out. Well, it would be rude to refuse and maaaybe I could use the help.

"Uh, I'd probably be fine, but let's not tempt fate. My Pa said that arrogance leads to falling, and I almost fell already". There, just keep your voice steady. Don't give her any reason to look down on you. Oh right!

I snatch up the paper and put it into my breast pocket.

"Let's go!" Well that came out way softer than intended. Evangelyne, stop looking at us like that, there is nothing funny about accidents. And stop winking at Helena, it's bad to teach kids to be spiteful.

I glare, but it slides right off of her as she shrugs, gathering up the books we used on a cart to be taken back to their places by the attendants. Well, she's orderly and respects other's work at least. Should I really be judging her? Helena has begun helping her eagerly.

"They will be fine", Eriadne says, leading me away.

"But I haven't yet returned m-"

"Stop trying to save the world all the time. You just almost killed yourself doing something dumb. I'm sure they won't mind moving a book or two more". Nobles really know how to fight dirtyā€¦ I fall silent before remembering what I actually wanted to ask.

"So what was it that I almost 'killed myself with'?"

"Magic".

Why thanks.

"...and?"

"Nothing 'and', you spoke an Invokation and had your First Awakening right there. Ask Ms Stonehugger if you don't believe me"

She sighs.

"When a Witch first touches magic it's called her First Awakening. It's dangerous to do and some died from it. I'd appreciate it if you stopped making fun of that possibility."

> "Protect others and bring evildoers to justice. Be true to myself.

I hang my head, equal parts ashamed and exhausted, feet dragging.

"I-I'm sorry".

"Don't say that. Don't just say 'I'm sorry' as if it means something".

"I'm so--" Just quickly enough I catch myself. Or so I think, but Eriadne's flat sideways look tells another tale. Goddess, what does she want?!

"I mean, uh, why wouldn't it mean something? I really *am* sorry!" I can feel my own frustration bubble up and seep into my voic before getting it back under control.

"When people say 'I'm sorry' they usually mean 'I'm sorry it went bad' or 'I'm sorry I got caught', nothing more". Heavens but she sounds angry...

I'm half-tempted to snap at her, but think better of it.

"I understand. I will stop doing-- I will *try* not to do stupid things anymore and be more careful."

Her previously taut muscles and expressions soften a bit, and she looks at me briefly, rather than staring straight ahead. Guess that's a good sign, but you can't ever know with her.

"Better." Wait, that's it?

"...I, uh". She swallows. Hard. Then takes a breath and coughs, covering her mouth with the back of her hand. Must be something bad she ate. Speaking of which, I'm starving. Wait, that isn't the topic here at all!

"I mean, I apologize!". She almost spits out the words, quick and hard. Why is she so flustered?

"It wasn't right to treat you like that". Back to icy calmness. Well, that was quick. Somehow I feel like it's my fault she lost herself like that.

"N-no, it's okay, I deserved that. It's okay!"

"It's n-" She squints at me, suddenly wary.

"Are you doing that on purpose?"

"Do what?"

"Never mind."

We walk a while in silence. She seems a tick less irritated with herself at least so that's good, but it still feels a bit awkward. Suddenly, her previous question comes back to me and I perk up.

1/?
>>
"It means to protect those that cannot do it themselves! To help the weak and guard humanity against its enemies. It means being true to who I am!"

"--what?"

"My answer. You wanted to hear it, right?"

"Ohā€¦" Then, "I expected something like that. You're an interesting person, Lady Maria of Antioch." I can feel myself colour slightly, that being probably the last thing I expected in response. Hm. That was a compliment, wasn't it?

It totally was, if just another one of those strange things nobles tend to say. My chest -such as it is- swells with pride and I allow myself to smile though I can feel it still being a bit lopsided from exhaustion.

The moment doesn't last long though, the sense of Helena's presence barely registering before she wraps her arms around my waist with a delighted squee. When did she learn to sneak like that? Evangelyne contents herself with just patting us both on the shoulder, like an inkeeper might his two favourite customers.

"Sorry to interrupt your little chitchat, but you took the wrong turn back there and the little runt here has sharp eyes so we thought we'd fetch you before you two love birds walk out a window somewhere." What's a love bird?

"We were just looking for the training areas", Eriadne says, her voice coloured in deep indignation. We weren't, were we? Maybe that's where she wanted to go? Well, best to keep quiet.

"Even worse, we don't have the time for that". Evangelyne resolutely steers us back, my legs working hard to keep up with her pushing as we're maneuvered down a particularily broad hallway hung with brocade banners of houses I don't recognize -- not that that says much.

Before I realize we're standing before two high double doors carved with birds, flowers and dragons. Just in time, too, two women in the finery of school servants making motions to close them, our group just managing to slip inside before they glide shut on well-oiled hinges.

Helena would be two cuties exploring, without a real power dynamic, Evangelyne needs sexy punishing. Eriadne seems like a nice top, so that's okay I suppose.
>>
>>33202905
B-but giving other girls a chance might mean they take away the best girl status from Eriadne! That's not allowed!
Really though, they're all nice. Well, Evangelyne is a bit of a bitch, but that's a delicious dynamic as well so hey.
>>
>>33202918
>Evangelyne needs sexy punishing.
Would be fun but we would need a way more dominating character to do it. Besides there's nothing wrong with being sub, it's a pity more quests don't go for it.
>>
>>33202918
>>33200783
> Evangelyne contents herself with just patting us both on the shoulder, like an inkeeper might his two favourite customers.

Maria might be a really unreliable narrator but this bit is still interesting. Eva seems to ship them, rather than wanting to be with either of them.

Helena needs a bump so she can compete for best girl status, Hexer. Eriadne and Maria are obviously best girls already, and Evangelyne fills an important niche and dynamic in the quest. Helena has potential but needs something more than 'spaz' to get there.

Minor ones, though for how much longer is another matter. Among other things she can detect and differentiate the life force signatures of living beings (hide-and-seek is one of those things clerics of Lady Athra play as a form of training), requires a lot less sleep than normal people and has a basic intuitive understanding of the human body.

>>33203157
Eriadne's hair is white, it's a trait many draconic nobles have regardless of biological sex. What the deal with Evangelyne's is is a mystery, but the answer might be as simple as dye.

>>33202428
>Do they have a formalised internal hierarchy?
Novice, Adept, High Witch. Houses are organized by Cells of no more than eight, cell leaders are beholden to the High Witch of their house and her council. All organized (non-hedge) witches are in theory beholden to the council of nine, who give out basic guidelines of behavior and act as the go-between between Witches and mundane forces during war time.

>what is the social attitude toward homosexuality?
...this will *so* be taken the wrong way. Oh well, time for political suicide.

Casual and casually dismissive, i.e it's okay to have such leanings but it's generally seen as a phase and something to get over. Public displays of overt affection are generally looked down upon in this part of the world, but that extends to both heterosexual and homosexual relations. Nobles are usually expected to breed at least once.

>>33202339
>best girl arguments?
No problem with those.

Wait. I thought she was adopted. So her real parents were also nobles?

>Oh well, time for political suicide.
I, for one, am supportive of this, though not that much of a waifufag.
It meshes with what I know of the setting.
>>
>>33205662
>Oh well, time for political suicide.
Only the idiots in Larro's or Kaleun's fanbase can't separate in and out of universe things from each other, if you mean the social stance.
>>
>>33205779
Wasn't she adopted by her aunt though?
>>
>>33205832
It's fine with Hex because that is actually reasonable given the setting, Larro gets shit because he's trying to distance himself from his 'overly happy lesbians'-past with suffering, and Kaleun just hates lesbians and doesn't think they can be happy, neither of which is true here.
>>
>>33205906
Archelon had a similar thing in his setting, and caught a bit of flak for it though.
>>
>>33205902
That's literally what he was asking.
>>33205923
False Dendrite? How did that manifest?
>>
>>33205662

Because
>>
>>33205945
What I meant to say was, if she was adopted by her aunt, and her aunt was a noble, then whichever parent the aunt was the sister of would share the same noble lineage.
>>
>>33205662
Is there gay marriage?
>>
>>33205945
Not False Dendrite, Princess Guard, it has a somewhat worse attitude toward homosexuality than this despite being less convincingly non-modern in terms of sensibilities.
>>
>>33206038
The joke is that PGQ isn't convincingly anything isn't it.
>>
>>33205906
>Kaleun just hates lesbians and doesn't think they can be happy
Was that ever confirmed to be anything other than L&M?
>>
>>33206038
> less convincingly non-modern
How can it be, if this is fantasy 20th century earth and his setting is medieval? Note I haven't read it.
>>
>>33206144
IIRC He's said that he has never met a happy lesbian and all lesbian relationships he's been in contact with were toxic and horrible, his quests have consistantly had lesbians be either not actually be lesbians or be for suffering/ the butt of a joke. However, despite all that, anything else is just L&M / a running joke, he has said he doesn't actually feel how anon thinks he feels, and did at one point promise to, at some point in the future, run the sweetest, most happy lesbian relationship quest ever.
>>
>>33206158
The characters all talk like modern people, including really jarring swearing, and have modern attitudes to things - not respecting social class and being disgusted by the idea of slavery and indentured servitude despite living in what is ostensibly a medieval monarchy and that sort of thing.
>>
>>33206188
>he has never met a happy lesbian and all lesbian relationships he's been in contact with were toxic and horrible
Actually, I've said I've never met a lesbian I liked, and only know two I don't dislike. And /all but one/ of their relationships were toxic and horrible. I actually know a happily married couple. I just happen to also not like either of them. But that's for reasons completely separate to their sexuality, and more to do with them fucking over my best friend.
>>
>>33206035
Depends on which deity you want to get married under. In the odd case a homosexual union gets formalized it's usually done with the blessing of Sharsee, goddess of Law, Loyalty, Truth and Contracts.

>>33205966
That will not do, anon. That will not do at all.

>>33205832
Well that... is a thing, I guess.

>>33205779
>It meshes with what I know of the setting.
Coolio!
>Wait. I thought she was adopted. So her real parents were also nobles?
They were, and when they died the claim to the Main House's leadership passed onto. Having to raise her future superior may or may not have played part in her aunt's resentment towards her, though honestly it's likelier she was just an unpleasant person in general. Seeing how Eriadne is legally dead now she must feel somewhat relieved...

Nobody knows, really. She's not really part of the pantheon and is generally enigmatic. Standing theory has it that she simply *is*, rather than being the goddess of anything in particular.

Some scholars theorize that she's a manifestation of the all-pervading Female principle of the universe, but really, who takes Theoretical Metaphysicists seriously?

All-Mother and witches don't give a shit. Also who caaares? Magic swordwandssss!
>>
>>33206475
>>33206462
Wait, I thought it was All-Mother? You're confusing me.
>>
>>33206490
The goddess is the All-Mother. It's her title they use in place of a name, the same way the Judeo-christian God is only ever described, rather than outright named (I Am Who I am, The Lord of Hosts, Lord, Most High, God Almighty, God Most High, etc etc).
>>
>>33206561
Right, got it. Spooky.

How religious are people in general?

The fuck are applied metaphysics, or am I reading too much into a weak joke?

She is basically a lovecraftian entity only not evil.

Wow.

Nothing even like it. Ambivalence more like it.

People might have cared more if it looked to impact their waifuing.

Seems a bit more like they disapprove of any romantic or sexual relationship that they can see, but only in that they can see it.

More of a keep it to yourself culture.

And I'm fine with that.

> homophobic

It's a lot more tolerant than the actual 1920's, let me tell you.
>>
>>33207180
I hope holding hands is okay at least...
>>

If not we can defy them, anon, it's okay.

Wow man, that's crossing the line! Jeez, you're horrible deviant, aren't you?
>>
>>33207262
Haven't we been holding hands with our oujo-sama this entire time?

I think people would have said something.
>>
>>33207642
We have been leaning on her because we fried our magic circuits. Totally different.

I hope that won't have a negative after-effect.
>>
>>33207683
Leaning on her can only lead to good things, anon!
>>

That's not what he means, and you know it.

Seems like it's something that happens often. It shouldn't be a problem.

Eriadne also said it's normally done with tutoring. I'm just afraid we might have done the magical equivalent of tearing a sinew or muscle really badly.

It's totally a metaphor for virginity isn't it?
>>
>>33207863
Well, we also shouldn't have been capable of doing it in the first place without tutoring, or at least that's what I gather from Evangelyne's "you've got talent" comment.
>>
>>33207921
Chantseeker probably is a trait that's somehow related to that.
>>
>>33207863
To be honest, that's almost exactly how I was interpreting Evangelyne's comments at first.
>>
>>33207921
I got a "shouldn't have done" vibe from it. Not shouldn't have been able to".
>>33207973
And we won't ever know whether we are the perverts seeing things or Hex was just rusin us.
>>
>>33207863
>>33207973
I'm pretty sure that was intentional.
>>
>>33208094
Could have been. Germans are sneaky and from an in universe perspective Eva strikes me as quite lewd.
>>
>>33207921
I read that as being able to do it without tutoring being rare, but not unheard of.
>>
I legit can't tell whether this thread is over or not. I'm about to go to sleep again and there's been, what, two story posts during my waking time?

Currently. Maria is currently pure.
