My name is Cecile, and I'm sixteen years old. Though I'd like to think that my upbringing was pretty normal, my parents got a really good job offer last year that would force them to move to the opposite end of the country... and that was the end of my "normal childhood." And after reading that weird book that my best friend Mina had sent to my house, I myself can't even be called "normal" anymore.

I was going to go practice shooting lasers with Theresa in her backyard, but then I spotted an owl watching us and figured that that probably wasn't the best time to be doing stuff like that.

So instead, we headed back inside and she had me watch this horribly depressing movie. I don't like crying, dammit.

But now the movie's over and I'm walking back to Charlotte's hotel so I can return her clothes...

Gotta get back to the hotel...

...so I can give back this pretty dress...

No, me. Quit thinking that. I'd rather die than have Allison see me in this thing, regardless of how cute it is. She'd NEVER let me live it down.

And so, I continue my walk to the hotel.

Heh... the girls in that movie were wearing stuff kind of like this. But luckily for me, I don't have to worry about accidentally falling into a spooky witch dimension or anything. Nope, I just have to worry about running into that triangle dickhead again.

I'd be happy if I never had to see his face ever again. And fortunately, I have an early-warning Synapse thing that'll let me know when someone else with weird powers is ar-

"Gaah!" I shriek...

...oh, it's just my phone. I guess I ought to answer it.

"Hello?" I say.
"Er, sorry to scare you there..." Charlotte replies.

I really need to learn to check to see who's calling before I answer this thing.

"No, it's fine," I reply. "W- wait a minute, how are you..."

And then I look up and see a familiar crow flying overhead.

"Loki spotted you walking towards the hotel, so I just called to find out what's up," Charlotte says. "Did you need something?"
"Oh," I sigh. "I'm just coming by to pick up my clothes and return this dress."
"That's all? You don't have to walk all this way, I can drop your clothes off at your house if you want."

"If my sister sees me like this, she'll start laughing and never EVER stop."

I've known Allison my entire life, there's no doubt in my mind that that's how she'd react.

"Aww, but you look so cute in that..." Charlotte sighs. "Alright, if you insist... I guess I'll meet you in the lobby?"
"Yeah, sure," I reply.

Hanging up my phone, I continue on my way to the hotel.

They're looking at meeeee... and that one guy's girlfriend seems REALLY pissed that he's staring at me like that. I don't know why she's giving -me- the stink-eye though, it's not like I'm trying to seduce anyone.

Now I understand why Allison's always complaining about jealous girls.

I'm more concerned with Mina's personality. in that it's kind of terrible and she's liable to blow up massively if we approach Theresa the wrong way

That works as a definition. Though it could also work for tsunderes i guess.
>>

>>33174288
No. I don't think this is likely, but if we managed to start going out with Theresa without Mina being on better terms with her, Mina would be fully justified in hating Cecile. The last time we talked to her about Theresa left her sobbing, for fuck's sake.
>>
>>33174327

Stop stop stop stop. Don't even entertain the thought.

I noticed in the last thread that some people got the wrong idea about this, so I'll clear it up now.
"Synapse range" refers solely to how far one's DETECTION range is. It's like saying that Charlotte's radar is super good while Irene's is crap. That's it.

>writing
>>
>>33174738
In all seriousness as someone who has most of the fetishes, trust me frills are way to vanilla to be considered fetish material.

Honestly it is about the same level of fetishness as liking to dress in a certain color.
>>
>>33174781
Oh, I thought it meant power.

"Long enough to notice you admiring your reflection in the door," Charlotte giggles.

Oh no, she DID hear me!

"Yeah, I guess I do look amazing in this..." I mumble.

Dammit, I just said something else weird out in the open. I really need to control my inner voice better.

It's like some kind of switch flipped... I really hope I haven't gotten myself into anything weird... yeah right, I'm already knee-deep in weird. What's it gonna hurt to go waist-deep?

And so, I chase after Charlotte, just making it into the elevator before it closes.

"Oh I have -all- kinds of ideas for cute dresses that I could make for you..." Charlotte giggles as she pushes the button for her room's floor.
"You don't have to do anything right now," I reply. "I know you're busy with the book hunt and all..."

When the elevator reaches our floor, Charlotte practically FLIES out into the hall, muttering under her breath about sewing machines and fabric types and a bunch of other stuff that goes right over my head as she pulls out a keycard and opens the door.

"Alright, Cecile!" Charlotte says in a cheerful voice, "I left your clothes right here by the door so that they wouldn't get lost!"
"Oh, thanks," I reply as I walk into the hotel room and pick up my stuff.

I am both happy and sad to finally have my own clothes with me again.

"Umm... I just need to go and fetch my measuring tape, so you can go ahead and undress in the bedroom," Charlotte says as she rummages through a bag she left on the kitchen table."
"Okay, cool," I reply.

Waving to the giant scary kitty along the way, I head straight for the bedroom and close the door behind me. And then I spend what feels like a freaking HOUR fumbling with the fasteners in the back of this thing in order to finally get it off.

I know that I could probably ask Charlotte to help me with this, but hahahahahaha no. Even I still have SOME pride at least.

Fancy dress is off... "other things" are off... now I put on my normal people's underwear...

"No, no," Charlotte shakes her head, "I'm just controlling his movements, that's all. Crows can't read, that's just silly."
"Sure," I say with a nervous laugh. "Silly."

After all the weird stuff that's happened to me over the past few days, I'd be willing to believe anything.

"..oh yeah," I sigh. She did that kind of thing the first day I met her, when she read that guy's license plate number through Loki's eyes or something.

And now she's taking my bust measurements, leaning in REALLY CLOSE to me and I can feel her breath on my neck TIME TO CHANGE THE SUBJECT!

"Hey Charlotte?" I call out.
"Yes?" Charlotte replies.
"Er, do you have an owl?" I ask. "Because I was at my friend's house earlier today and I spotted a really huge one that didn't seem like it belonged here..."
"Oh," she sighs. "Yes, that was another of my friends. I had him shadow you when you left just in case that person with Ornamental Tangram attacked you again... you're not angry that I did that without asking, are you?"

To be fair she also didn't make a secret of it. When a random out-of-place owl shows up and makes fluffy-feathers at you, and you know there is a druid in town who might be worried about your safety, it's the logical conclusion.

Owls are pretty sneaky when they want to be, if she felt like it we probably never would have seen it.

It's fine to be worried for our safety since we got jumped and all, but I don't know. We can't really be mad at her.
>>
>>33176892
while true, she is still being really suspicious in just enough ways to be questionable.
>>
Ya know, it's becoming increasingly obvious that she strongly suspects we got our powers from a book.
But she's being delicate about it, waiting for us to either trust her and come clean, or try to cut contact and run away.

Don't bring up the damn books, that's stupid as of right now.
>>
>>33176953
Well the bird can't sense Branches, so having it observing the random chunk of the town we happen to be in has a roughly equal chance of it spotting something as any other given part of the city. Maybe even a better chance, since another Branch user might sense us and approach us.
>>
"No, it's fine," I sigh. "Just don't do it again, okay?"
"I understand that it might have weirded you out a little, but..."
"Why do you keep watching me without telling me, anyways?" I ask. "I'm not mad or anything, just curious."
"Well..." she sighs.

Right on my neck.

I want to put some clothes on already, but Charlotte's still not done with taking my measurements...

"To be honest, you're a target," Charlotte says as she wraps the measuring tape around my waist. "You were already attacked yesterday, and there's a high chance of another Branch holder finding you through a Synapse and trying to make contact. And there's no knowing what kind of person it could be... maybe it's someone who bought that book, or maybe it's a member of another organization. You do understand my concern, yes?"

"Yeah, I guess," I reply.
"But I do want to respect your privacy, so I'll stop having you followed since you asked so nicely," Charlotte says. "I wouldn't be much of a friend if I ignored your wishes, right?"
"Er..." I stare at the floor, "...yeah..."
"But you do have my number, so just call if you ever decide to change you mind."

Stop making me feel guilty for lying to you about the book, dammit.

Charlotte finishes gets done taking my measurement just as she's also finished making me feel like a total jerk... and once she leaves the room, I quickly get my clothes on and leave the bedroom.

Allison's the one who's supposed to get guilt tripped when in her underwear, not me.

God, if it wasn't for the fact we haven't really talked to Irene, I'd say we should try to get our friends to actually make a decision on the books first thing tomorrow.

Without warning, Charlotte wraps her arms around me and holds me in a tight hug.

"I know that getting thrown into all this crazy business is scary, I really do," Charlotte says. "If you ever need to talk to someone about it, I'm only a phonecall away."

"Yeah, I understand how you feel," Irene replies. "And I'm REALLY sorry about that entire thing, I really am. We're supposed to be the good guys, and that's not how the good guys are supposed to act."
"Who exactly are this 'we' that you keep talking about?" I ask. "You keep saying that you're the good guys, but I don't even know what you -want-. When I first met you, you said that you were trying to prevent people from being attacked or something, but that's really vague..."

So that means that the super police that Mina was so worried about are real. And then she watched as one of them tried to kill me. Oh man, she's probably been hiding under her bed ever since she got home.

"You guys are trying to police everyone who has a Branch, yeah?" I ask.
"Something like that, I guess," Irene replies.
"In that case, why are you trying to retrieve the books? Wouldn't it be easier to police all the Branch people out there if you burned them? You know, get rid of the main thing that makes them?"
"Well..." Irene mumbles, "...I have orders against that."
"Why?"
"Lots of reasons. Researchers want to study the different books that we have in our possession and see how they differ in construction, others want to use them to give Branches to people already loyal to our organization instead of having to rely on Gardeners..."

I guess I understand that reasoning. Doesn't make it any less suspicious, though.

"Anyone else that I should watch out for?" I ask.
"The Qliphoth," Irene replies.

I think I remember Charlotte mentioning that name before.

"What's that?" I ask.
"It's a group that splintered off our own," Irene replies. "They like to call themselves the 'reverse of the tree,' and even named their organization as such just to drive the point home."
"So what's so bad about them?"
"They do whatever they want, KILL whoever they want, TAKE whatever they want. All of them have extremely strong Branches, and they stole a bunch of our organization's information when they split off from us... there's only ten of them, but they're a massive threat."

Well. There's a fully-fledged non-ambiguous Evil Organization that I need to watch out for now. That's just great.

"Er- no, it's fine," I say, shaking my head vigorously as I hurry past the guy who I'm -fairly- certain is the one who just triggered that Synapse. But as I walk by, I give the guy a once-over just in case.

Scar over one eye, shaggy blonde hair... hat that doesn't match his suit... and on that suit is a little paper pinwheel. I kind of want to ask him about it, but I'm trying not to be conspicuous here.

I do notice that he smiles at me and tries not to be too obvious that he's checking out my butt as I pass him. Not that I can blame him, but-

NO, DAMMIT. CUT THAT OUT.

Shaking all the bad thoughts out of my mind, I hurry home as fast as I can before more superpowered (potential) criminals show up.

Walk up the front steps...

...turn the key...

"CECILE!" the second I step into the house, Allison screams my name as loud as she can.
"Ghaaa!!" I shout back. "What the heck, Allison!?"
"Where have you been all day, young lady!?"
"D- didn't I call you this morning? I stayed over at my friend's place, and then I headed over to Theresa's house to hand out for a while."
"Yeah, but you were coming back from a different direction from Theresa's house," she says, crossing her arms.

What, was she looking out the window this entire time?

"Yeah," I roll my eyes, "well I had to head back to Charlotte's to pick up my clothes-"
"'Pick up your clothes?'" Allison's looking at me with a most wicked grin.

"And -why- were your clothes dirty, my little sister?" Allison asks as she leans in waaaay too close to me.
"N- nothing weird!" I shout, pushing her away from me. "My clothes got dirty so she lent me some of hers until she could get mine cleaned! That's all!"
"Suuuuure," she says, placing her hands on her hips. "But this 'Charlotte' girl's the gothic lolita chick from the other night, right?"
"Yeah?"
"So I assume that the clothes that you borrowed from her were in the same style?"
"...yeah?"

I can't lie to her. There's no point.

"Dammit, why didn't you let me seeeeeeeeee," Allison moans as she pulls me into her chest and holds me there so tight that I can't breathe. "You always wear that plain stuff, it's such a waste for a cute girl like you! You need to, like, wear clothes that accentuate your own natural attributes!"
"...you think I'm cute?" I ask as I push myself free from her deathgrip.
"Not in a gay way, but yeah," she shrugs. "You're fuckin' adorable."

I doubt CC has ever handled a gun before, and you don't just go from a total amateur to Quick Draw McGraw overnight.

Unless we're going to have a training arc devoted to gitting gud with a handgun, it really wouldn't be useful except as intimidation.

As a gun enthusiast, I'd much rather someone have no gun than have a gun in the hands of some jumpy kid who doesn't have enough training to hit her target.

The thing is, some Branch powers (such as, possibly, ours) may not require you to draw a fairly obvious and somewhat cumbersome piece of weaponry to point at someone, may not run out of ammunition, and may not require the physical act of aiming said weapon.

Basically, we shouldn't need a gun if we git gud.
>>

And that's it for this thread.
It was fun getting to SPAGHETTI and EXPOSITION and PARANOIA. Not to mention being able to show off my newfangled character picture things.
Next thread is... I dunno. Maybe tommorow, maybe another day. I also don't know what Quest I'll be runnin next, so check the Twitters for that information.

And now is question and answer time.

Dude, the phone RANG three times and went to voicemail both times. The call therefore connected with both of their cell phones. They are not off the grid by any means.

>>33180976
About the Tangram Doritos, when the Pastebin says that making 3D structures makes them "far more resilient than their base components," does that mean they are more resilient to the dissolving-in-radius effect (i.e. can 3D things go farther away than Doritos?)
>>
>>33180976
Why such evil ending? We'll talk to them first thing in the morning, r-right?
>>
>>33180911
I'm not talking about that. I mean how she doesn't talk to Mina. Sure, it would be painful, but right now they both hurt and Theresa is in the best place to improve their relationship.

I don't think our fragile minds can take an extra day of paranoia without FDQ.
>>
>>33181024
you fucking dense cunt.
in order for the call to connect and go to voicemail, both the caller and the receiver have to be on the grid.
if we were off the grid, we would have heard the standard "there does not appear to be service in your current location" message.

>>33181030

I haven't read a single thread of PGQ, so I have no idea what you're talking about...

FD caught my attention, but PG just didn't attract me for some reason.
>>
>>33181040
He wouldn't be getting out of it by postponing it.

>>33181049
Wow, if you fucking insist.
In order for what just happened to be fucking MAGIC, the orchestrator would either:
>a) have cut us off from all connections, and then transmitted both the ringing signal and the voicemail messages to our phone, and also responded to our sent texts in such a way that the phone interprets the texts as sent
OR
>b) He is currently warping our perception of reality in such a way that things happen as if we can't contact our friends.

Either someone's going through a whole lot of specific trouble to fuck with us, or we are dealing way above our paygrade and are about to fucking die.

Neither scenario seems likely in the least.
>>
>>33181078
FD is making me backlog PGQ.

Nico and Theresa are the best girls.

Theresa has the best butt, though Cecile's is also nice.

Babby inherits the Seed, but not the Branch itself. And even then, it takes certain circumstances for said Seed to awaken.

Not very accessible for an upper-middle-class white girl with no knowledge of where to get said guns.

I'll hold off on answering this one for a while, as it might come up in-story and I don't want to spoil it.

I'm taking that as a yes, because it seemed the hands Arch made went farther than the Doritos could.
