You do your best to look professional- keeping a calm, almost bored look as the flashbulbs and people mull about below the stage. But underneith the calm demeaner you're just a step below panic- the only thing keeping you from ducking under the table to escape is Anzu on one side and Miho and trainer Ami Chouno on the other. And about fifty members of the international press in front of you.

You are Commander Russells of the M26E1 Pershing Heavy Tank and today you've made history- you've won the first battle in history between the M26 Pershing and the PzKpfw.IV-II Konigstiger. Althought the M26E1 had been designed to take on the thick armor of the Tiger II, German had been defeated before it had been able to deploy.

Ever since the question had always remained- if the two beasts had met in combat, who would have won? Today, you've partially answered that question. And now you get to live with the ramifications. As if some invisible signal had been given, the press begin shouting questions. Thankfully for you, they're mostly in English.

>"Can you describe your Panzer?"
>"Do you feel your tank had the advantage?"
>"What do you have to say about your opponent?"

Black Jack didn't really get to see action in WWII but did in the Korean War with my grandfather, so this opportunity was really exciting. [Insert general description here]

It was specifically designed to win this fight.... and it had my crew. [attempt charming smile]

>"What do you have to say about your opponent?"

My opponent has some real chops but it seems she was out of her element in a one-on-one match. I think our next encounter will be a lot more interesting.

>>33173379
dumb question: during this segment of last session:
>"Careful..." You warn, opening the hatch as you come to the corner. "Slow- I don't want to blunder right into them..." You say carefully as you pop your head and shoulders out of the turret- You don't hear her tracks and, as the turret rounds the corner, you see why. Less than a hundred feet down the road you see the Tiger II stopped at an intersection, angled into it with her gun pointing north- Erika sitting up outside the hatch- the gun is pointed down a side road. Evidently she'd decided to try to ambush you, but had gone a few streets too far. For a second, you both stare at each other and you swear that you both blink at once.

I'm confused, where is our turret and hull pointing, on the compass, in this scene? As a reader, I'm having difficulty making a metal picture of the scene.
>>
>>33174035
I see it as pointed either East or West, depending on which way we came. For drama it can be pointed slightly south as well, making the turret traverse more equal between the tanks.
>>
>>33174090
Thanks for the input. I'll just wait for BJ to toss in his 50 cents before editing. I've been fine with the other battles, but this last one is the only one I feel would have been better with some sort of map to show our location, routes traveled, where we think Erika is, etc.
>>
>>33174035

City is roughly a grid- the main boulevard travels East-West- we came off a North/South oriented cross-street and rotated our turret to face East (towards the ocean.) and Erika's tank was parked a another cross-street with her turret pointed North (She'd last seen us retreating off the main boulevard North and hadn't seen us cross the boulevard since then, so logically we'd be on the North side of town.) She merely underestimated how far we'd traveled and how quickly. She was actually damn close- literally a street off.
>>
>shittalking to the international press
Come on guys. Isn't that a bit much? It's bound to bring us a headache down the road. Just give them a 'they fought well' and leave it at that.
>>
>>33174220
Thanks for clarifying BJ. Next question: When Miho challenges Erika, she calls the KTII Blue Fredrick. But, when the Hamster asks Erika if the KTII has a name, she replies the crew calls is Big Kitty. Which name should stick?
Here's my thinking: If the KTII is bloodied, a historical name would be prized by Kuro, while a nickname would be scorned as insulting. But if Kuro does not like naming tanks, then the nickname might evolve.
>>
>>33174367

Yeah, that's a fuck-up on my part. The Tiger(P) is Blue Fredrick.
>>
>>33174426
I will make sure that's clarified. I'm thinking of name dropping that when Russells gets shown the hull. Does that sound good, or do you have plans to reveal the name coming up that would be disrupted because of that?
>>
>>33174507

Actually, I got the name from some of the writefaggotry that was popular for a time- people were naming and writing short stories about the origins or personalities of some of the tanks. (IS-2 was named Red Vanya and wanted to CRUSH WEAK CAPITALIST TANK, Blue Frederick was the Tiger(P), Big Kitty was the Tiger II, etc.)

What ever happened to those? I liked reading them. :P (And as far as I'm concerned they're canon for the most part...)

You point at a member of the press, who introduces herself as representing the NHK. "Can you describe your panzer for us, briefly?" She says, holding what appears to be a mostly redundant notepad.

You swallow before nodding. "Well, first off we call it a tank..." You say, eliciting a murmur of laughter from the crowd. Okay- good start. You hope. Oh god, you hope you didn't insult the poor lady. Keep going, moron! Answer her question before you look dumb. "Black Jack is an M26E1 Pershing- it was designated a heavy tank during WWII. Black Jack didn't fight in WWII, but did see action in Korea after being re-equipped as an M26A1." You stop, hoping thats enough of an answer.

The reporter mostly keeps looking at you, though. "My grandfather actually served as a crewmember on it during the Korean War, he then bought it when it was going to be scrapped after the war..." There's a slight murmer through the crowd- that was something they found interesting.

From the voices of many, another question arises- This one from an L.A. Times reporter. Closer to home! "Do you feel your tank had an overall advantage against your opponent?" He asks, looking down at his notes.

You nod. "The Pershing had everything we needed to face the Tiger II on equal terms." You comment proudly. "Our gun is outstanding and Rose, our gunner, is perhaps the best I know of." You say, smiling a bit. "That being said, I think our biggest advantage was our tracks..." You say.

"Can you elaborate?" The reporter asks.

"Our Pershing had rubber shoes on its tracks- strategically it protects the tracks and improves their lifespan..." You explain. "In this case though, it also made us much quieter compared with the Tiger II's steel tracks- we could literally stop and listen for them- We had a pretty good idea where they were the entire match- because of that we were able to sneak up behind the Tiger II."

"Can you tell us a bit about the Pershing's main gun?" Another reporter askes, a bit louder than the people around him- From the accent he's some kind of European. "It uses a non-standard cannon, correct?"

YOu nod. "Yes, Black Jack mounts the T54 90mm cannon." You say before pausing. "It's a modification of the T15 gun used on the T26E4 Super Pershing- it uses a shorter, fatter casing that's easier to load in a cramped turret. It has a longer barrel and higher muzzle velocity than the standard 90mm M3 cannon." The guy was probably familiar with armor- so you don't mind getting a bit technical. "In short- the M3 was designed to compete with the 88mm-armed Tiger, while the T15-series was designed to compete with the long-88-armed Tiger II and 128mm-armed Jadgtiger."

He seems pleased with the answer and sits before the room erupts into more questions. One stands out. "Do you believe that you would've won if the match had come down to a head-to-head fight?"

The thing is it's one of those questions that's really hard to answer. There's so many factors, one of the chief ones being the competing crews, dumb luck, terrain.... and what would a head-to-head match really consist of? Some wild west stand-off and shooting at each other until something breaks? That's more the territory of data analysts comparing fire power and armor and maneuverability in a controlled environment.

I don't know much about tanks, honestly, so I can't speak for Russels here, but it seems to me that it's not a scenario one should except to happen in real life. Armchair general trivia stuff.

"What do you mean, head to head?" You ask back. "Like- no maneuvering? Just a frontal brawl?" You're tone is incredulous, but the reporter nods earnestly. "It doesn't happen like that. At least not between two machines and crews of similar stature. Tank fighting is about out-flanking your enemy, getting the drop on them, placing yourself into an advantageous situation and capitalizing on..."

You sigh, capitulating. "Honestly? It's a toss-up. We both have guns capable of penetrating each other's frontal armor at combat range. It comes down to who engages and fires the first effective shot." You say, noting the disappointed look on the reporter. "Sorry- tanking is about a lot more than just guns and armor- it's tactics, strategy, doctrine. You win the fight long before you fire the shot. If I'm honest, I'd deserve whatever loss I got if I'd tried to go head to head with the Tiger- and she'd deserve the loss if she tried it against me."

He got 53% on SPershing. With pretty good stat too.
I think he just fucking didn't care at this point and just play what tank he like.

Though that 40% WR on jumbo...*cries*

Consensus has been reached. BJ, commence writing.
>>
>>33177626

hey man, the TOG can be fun. in groups of three, assuming it's top tier.

Then again, that top tier clause kinda ruins it.
>>
>>33178321
Before elenberg get reworked, i once blocked a bridge with my TOG.
And enemy being mentally deficient, lot of them get slaughtered when trying to push my wreckage.
Oh God, i enjoy it.
>>
>>33178321

I was on a team with EIGHT TOGs once.

Half the other team immediately voiced their surrender and sat in their starting positions.

The other half were crushed by the naval onslaught
>>
>>33178352

That's what I meant by fun, haha. TOG Wall, best wall.

To be fair, though, I'm absolutely dismal in it, but I'm not good at tanks to begin with, so it is what it is.
>>
>>33178381
Ew.
Eight TOG? MM must be drunk again.

>>33178383
TOGblocking has become less relevant now, with many map reworked to include more than one choke point.
>>
>>33178091

Yeah, I played the Jumbo back in my early days maybe 2 years ago? Super Pershing got to 55% before the 8.8 nerf. Played about 100-200 games since the nerf and the winrate dropped to 53%.

Should've sold it when I had the chance.
>>
>>33178381
TOG tank is party tank. that match had better have been recorded.
>>33178418
>MM, drunk
you wish, he's just an arsehole.
>>
>>33178418

Oh, no doubt. I can imagine you could still use it on, say, the middle path on lakeville, but IDK how much good that'd do, honestly, since the last several times I played that map we lost because most of our heavies went into the valley. Why does everyone go valley? I mean, I'm garbage and I know don't go valley unless you're a TD, and even then you just camp the back. I don't get it.

but I"m the only of my friends that still plays who owns a TOG so these days it just collects dust and I use the excelsior to help train the churchill crew.
>>
>>33178452
I just wonder what kind of sadist put Chi-Ri with same MM weight with heavies. Didn't too matter on tier 7 but on high tier....

>>33178420
jumbo before HEAT nerf was godly. It still pretty good now but rather overshadowed by Ez8.
>>
>>33178418

Eight togs... that's 11200 HP of enemy tank in a Tier VI match...

Terrifying. Absolutely terrifying.

Guys, how do you git gud on the T20? They said it was the best tier 7 med, but I can't get it to work. Same with the Patton, can't seem to git gud on those two.
>>
>>33178995
the best tank in the game, driven by a moron, can be beat by the worst tank, driven by Quickybaby. meditate on this, young one, and find your answer you shall.
>>
>>33178995
Flanking is good in the t20, it's fast, has a good top gun, and has a bouncy turret, it's been so long since I've had a T20, I can't remember much about it than that, sorry. See what Jingles/Quickybaby/etc have to say about it on youtube?

You spend a while longer answering questions- most of it is pretty trivial or very loosely tied to the day's match. It's actually sort of tiring. It's actually a pretty long while before someone askes another good question. Another Japanese reporter, this time. "How do you feel about Oorai's chances in this season's Senshado Tournament? Do you think they can win?"

"Absolutely." You say, without hesitating. "We've got great tanks, we've got several aggressive and motivated crews, and we have a world-class team commander." You nod towards Miho. "I'm not saying we're the likely bet- we're the underdogs for sure. But I wouldn't bet against us, either. I think we're going to surprise a lot of people in this tournament."

You look over at Miho, nod and then turn to Anzu, who shrugs. "Done?" She asks, simply. You nod back to her and she stands up and begins calming the crowd as they rush to bombard you with last second questions and you and then Miho get up to leave.

>Talk with Miho.
>Talk with Ami.
>Find crew.
>Other.
>>
>>33179035
Maybe its my playstyle, I guess? I mean, I have a slightly better winrate on my Panther (53-ish) than the T20 (51-ish).

For a slightly more skewed comparison, I have a relatively good(?) WR on my E-50 (54), but then an absolutely abysmal rating on the Patton (46, I shit you not).

Around the same time as they get introduced in WarThunder. In the VERY distent future.
>>
>>33179192
ah, find relevant FTR QA
- the Sentinel Australian tank might be “introduced one day, not in 2014 though” (SS: according to what Chieftain said earlier, Sentinel will not be a part of the LL “Firefly” branch, so it’s possible it will come later)

Well, the secret to most American tanks is the terrain abuse and positioning- since it sounds like you're doing a lot better with the German mediums, which generally have much better frontal armor but weaker gun depression, my guess is that you expose your US mediums too much.

US Mediums should always be played from hardcover- hills, destroyed walls, dead tanks- your hull is very squishing but your turret is much harder- combined that with your great gun depression and US mediums become some of the best positional fighters in the game- fast enough to get to aggressive positions early-on and then pull back behind the heavy push when the enemy starts getting too aggressive.

At this point you've got plenty of DPM to support the heavy and assault TDs as they make their push. Later in the game, as the enemy tanks are thinned out, you can start using your maneuverablity to flank the remaining enemy forces and put your DPM to devestating effect.
>>
>>33179240
...well, my Persh record has 3% higher WR than my Panther II, and they both have around 250-ish matches.

Huh, now that I'm taking a look at my stats, I don't know what the hell my playstyle is anymore.

yay. since this is in private, should we be defiant, professional, or smug. either way, we should ask what will become of Erika.

As you walk to look over at Ami. You give her a grin. "So- Instructor, how did I do?" You ask.

In her usual etherial way, she responds with a question. "How do you think you did?" You hate that game- but you'll play it for the moment.

"I think two tanks went in, and one came out. That speaks for itself- though I bet you've got a more critical analysis?" You insinuate. Ami gives a short laugh and pauses for a second.

"I think that many tankers are obsessed with their eyes- what they can see. You won the match because you were able to use more of the information at your disposal." She pauses for a moment, standing still- it takes you half a step to stop. "Erika is used to working in a group- having many eyes in many directions and a lot of noise and interference besides. She only used her eyes and because of that you had a tremendous advantage over her."

"So I did well?" You say, fishing for the compliment.

"Don't get a big head just yet, Hero." She says, winking at you. "You didn't see it, but Erika was checking crossroads one-by-one. You got lucky that she didn't catch you crossing. And that first shot- amazing as it was that Rose his them, was a waste of time."

"So..." You say, cocking your head a bit. "I did..."

She gives another short laugh. "You did was what required."
