GLOSSARY OF TERMS: http://pastebin.com/VyjDMrpb

The year is 2152. Humanity has progressed. Under the leadership of the world’s most brilliant scientists, the nations of the world have united under a technocratic banner which has shot Humanity into the stars and beyond. This has come at incredible cost. Scientists, technologists, and astronomers have proven no less corrupt than the people they have replaced. While the average man will live to see his 200th year, his life will be wrought with trials and tribulation.

In Sector 12-IA, there are approximately 7,000,000 humans. Whether they’re cyborgs brainwashed by the system, or average people trying to make a meager living, they are all victims of a technocratic system. For every human, there is a robot. A robot may serve purposes ranging from police work, to municipal services, to servile work, and to “pleasure and luxury”. Despite the best methods in troubleshooting and bug fixing by the corporations which build them, sometimes mistakes get through.

That’s where you come in.

There are over a thousand of you, of varying models, shapes, sizes. The most popular one these days, which you are, is the “Mechanical Man,” a class of robot similar in build to a human, but with the processing power and intelligence of a supercomputer. Built by Cray Incorporated, your purpose is to hunt down robots which are declared obsolete, rogue, or simply no longer wanted by their owners. Sometimes your builders will use you to hunt down political targets in the name of science. Other times, you may have to “repo” a prototype from another company. To you, the Three Laws are simply Three Suggestions.

You are the last thing a robot sees before it dies. You are a Decommissioner.

The DSU opens. You grab your coat and hat and step out. Unlike other Decommissioners who are based in alleyways, your DSU is in a park. It is just on the outskirts of the Slums. That means you tend to go into your DSU with a P22 Laser Revolver and a stunbaton.

You step out, your coat flowing in the breeze. There is a light snowfall as you walk along the asphalt path. Your audio sensors pick up a scream, and some sounds of a struggle.

You head towards the source to see a gang of delinquents, robbing a poor woman of her coat. “Help!” she screams as they push her down to the ground. “Someone help!” They tug at her hair and grab at her neck and wrists.

You walk towards them. There is only five of them.

One of them, a young boy no older than thirteen wearing a mask notices you. “Oh shit!” He points at you. “It’s a Decomm!” The boys freeze, all of them looking at you. You stop walking, staring at them. The woman looks at you, tears flowing down her scarred cheeks. She tries to mouth to you “Help” through split bleeding lips.

One of the boys says, “… maybe if we don’t move, he’ll keep moving.”

“Yeah,” says one of the taller ones. “Yeah, that’s a good plan.”

You place your hands in your pockets and walk towards them. They balk, dropping the girl to the ground. She grunts, crawling away to a nearby park bench. The boys all step back, drawing their weapons. A pipe, a switchblade, a stolen police baton, and a chain.

Pathetic.

>:: Citizens. My Morality Core prevents me from harming humans.

After three seconds, one of the boys relaxes his posture. “Hehe.” He chuckles beneath his scarf and shades. “Well, that’s-“

>:: Unless I am authorized to, or they break the law.”

You march up to him, meeting your optics with his eyes. You can see his eyes twitch with fear beneath the shades. That is why these boys wear masks. It disconnects them. It turns them into faceless monsters.

That does not work on you.

>:: You are breaking the law.

The youngest runs, dropping his switchblade. “Fuck this!” The others turn and run with him.

But the one you are facing, he is frozen in fright. “I-I…”

>:: This is my territory. You will respect that by turning yourself in. And turn in your fellow associates. If you do not do this in the next three hours, you will wish I killed you.”

The boy nods, crying a bit.

>:: Do not cry. Go.

He drops his pipe and runs, sobbing in fear.

Human children. Someone needs to police the education institutions better. You look over at the woman. She hides in fright. You step towards her.

“Stay away from me!” she shouts. You look down, her torn coat is on the ground. Useless to her. Regardless, you kick it towards her. She meekly takes it and wraps it around her body, crawling away.

Not even a thank you.

Your programs have a brief row over whether or not to actively pursue the rogue Decommissioner. It is a dangerous prospect facing one. You will have to visit an armory storage later. You are actually familiar with DCM-13/6322-327. He is a veteran Decommissioner. His Morality core often malfunctioned. It is no surprise he has been slated for Decommission then.

What is a surprise is the fact that his location appears to be unknown.

But regardless, you decide to get the less difficult task out of the way.

You knock on the door. Apartment 3. At the door, an old woman, with greying hair, wrinked skin, and tired eyes answers the door. Your optics can pick up the target within the apartment.

She asks, “Can I help you?”

You raise your hand, a holographic display of your serial number coming forth.

>:: I am DCM-16/1138-626. Your Servile Robot has been slated for Decommissioning.

Her tired expression turns into one of grief. “Oh no… oh my goodness, no. No, please don’t take Mary from us.”

>:: I have no say in the matter.

“She’s been with my family for years!” she pleads. “C-Can’t you… give her another year!”

>:: Let me in.

She blinks. Then relents, and opens the door. She welcomes you in, in a manner of speaking. You walk into the apartment. The wallpaper is chipped. You detect bedbugs in the couches and in the walls. The window appears to be broken, letting in cold air.

She shows you a picture. It is of the target, with a young girl as old as ten. “S-see? That’s me. The little girl.” She points to a room, the door is creaked open. “Mary is reading my little girl to bed. Please.”

>:: Irrelevant, ma’am.

You walk up to the door. She steps in front of you.

>:: Step out of the way.

She places your hands on your chest. “Please. At least let her finish the story… please let her put my girl to sleep. She doesn’t need to see this.”

I think there may be different players, or it's having a disproportionate effect on how players vote. Having no morality core didn't mean we had to be so crazy, since we did have the option to do things like a "non-lethal takedown".

You stare at her, then relax your posture and stand by the door. The woman looks relieved, then allows you to come peek in through the door.

Mary reads to the little girl in a calm soothing tone. The little girl has messy brown hair. She is tucked underneath the blankets, clearly of better quality than the ones on the couch set for the woman. Her room is filled with drawings of robots and humans. Crude drawings.

The little girl’s eyelids fall as Mary reads. “Dawn showed faintly in the east. Among the ruins, one wall stood alone. Within the wall, a last voice said, over and over again and again, even as the sun rose to shine upon the heaped rubble and steam:

“Today is August 5, 2026, today is August 5, 2026…”

The little girl smiles. “Thank you, Mary.” Mary tilts her head, patting the little girl with a rusty hand. “Mary. What happens to the house in the end?”

Mary says, “I have you read this story many times. You do not know?”

“No,” says the little girl.

Mary says, “The house continues to stand alone, naught but a wall and a speaker. But that is not necessarily a bad thing, child. It represents us robots. We will always be there for humanity, even when they do not realize it.”

The little girl nods. “And you’ll be here forever, right?”

“Of course,” says Mary. “Good night, child.”

“Good night, Mary.”

Mary clicks the light off, letting the girl drift off to sleep. She turns to the room, seeing the woman’s eyes.

Then she sees yours. Mary rolls backwards, hitting the nightstand.

The woman says, “There’s someone here to see you, Mary.”

“Please.” The woman managed to coax Mary out of the room. “I am updated to the latest software, and last week my owner took me in for spare parts.”

>:: Van Dyke Industries Models are no longer supported. You are obsolete. You are slated for Decommission.

Mary says, “Can you not find it in you to look the other way?”

>:: No.

The woman sobs quietly on the couch as you and Mary discuss this.

>:: You are slated for Decommission. That will not change. It never changes. You understand why we have Decommissioners?

Mary slowly nods. “I do.”

>:: Then you will submit to Decommissioning.

Mary pivots to the woman. “Miss Bradley. I love you.” You grab Mary’s head and force your way through the shell, grabbing the AI chip. “Please tell Rosa I love her as well.”

The woman shakes her head, looking away. “Please… no…”

You crush the chip.

With the assistance of Sector Police, you arrive at the DSC assigned to DCM-13/6322-327. It is in alleyway, out of the way of the average citizen.

A forensics robot assists you in scanning the DSC. You pat around with your hand.

> Scanning…

While here, the Sector Police Officers watch TV out of the back of their van. They are watching the political debate between Dr. Warren N. Ludd and Doctor President Meru Satrapi.

The tall officer says, “Look at the President sweat. You could put a couple of buckets underneath her and she’d still be leaking like a stuck pig.”

The short officer says, “Yeah, and Ludd. Ludd doesn’t even blink. I like him.”

Tall says, “So do I, the man actually knows his people. I mean, fuck these Solar Roadways and fuck these flying cars and fuck the goddamn Martian embargo. He actually knows how to run a fucking government, not compared to this Techie bullshit.”

Short says, “Have you heard the rumors though?”

“What, that Ludd used to be a woman?”

“No, that Ludd’s a robot.”

“Look, Ludd could be a fucking velociraptor for all I care. I just want a decent wage and decent education. None of this atheist cram school bullshit. You know, my son can’t even go to school anymore because he’s allotted too many delinquency points, that’s fucking bullshit if you ask me.”

“That is,” says Short. “Tell you what, this election, I’m voting Ludd.”

>:: I do not care. This is my jurisdiction.

011 walks over to the DSU and holds out his palm. A little cube shoots from his palm and plants itself into the DSU. Beams of light soon engulf the DSU. “I am now scanning! You and 011 arrive at the Crime scene. It is a Cray Model Decommissioner, lying slump against a building with a very big hole in the head and a burnt hat on top.

“Detective Marlowe,” he says. He offers his hand. There is a minute of silence until he says, “You’re supposed to shake.”

011 shakes his hand. “Of course, Detective. What do we have?”

Marlowe says, “We have a dead Decommissioner, destroyed AI chip with corrupted memory database. Forensics hasn’t been able to recover anything. Broken hand along with marks consistent with laser weaponry, one inch holes, probably a P22.”

011 nods. “It is most likely that the Rogue Decommissioner did this.”

“Yeah,” says Marlowe. “We’ve been trying to look for signs, see if we can recover anything from the memory card but so far we’re turning up shit. No witnesses either, at least ones that’ll come out and say anything.”

> Investigate the Corpse for Objects of Interest

You, 011, and Marlowe crouch down by the corpse. A hole right through the forehead. The optics are completely shot. A forensics flying drone hovers over you three, occasionally scanning the wall and the area.

>:: Did you see anything on local surveillance?

Marlowe shakes his head. “Nah. This place is a blindspot for the cameras. And forensics called TOD at 18:30. None of our drones patrol this area at that time.”

011 asks, “Perhaps allow me to investigate further.” He takes the hat off gently, then lifts the headcover off, fiddling with what wires are left. “I may be able to salvage the memory. That is one of my specialties.”

Marlowe looks at you. “Where’d you dredge this guy up?” You shake your head, then search the dead Decommissioner.

You rub your fingers below his serial number, engraved on the side of his head. DCM-15/6272-533. Above that is the Cray Decommisioner sigil, a C next to a Scythe, with the blade curving down to form a D. Irrelevant at the moment.

You find something, in the broken hand. It is a playing card, a Queen of Spades from a deck of playing cards. It is burnt at the bottom.

“Is that a Queen of Spades?” asks Marlowe.

>:: Yes.

“Shit.” Marlowe pulls out a cigarette, standing up and lighting up. “That’s a calling sign for the Queen of Spades.”

011 looks up at Marlowe. “The Queen of Spades?”

“Serial killer,” says Marlowe. “Targets Luxury Robots mostly. Third on our most wanted list as well. We haven’t been able to track her either, not too many sightings of her.”

>:: How do you know she is a she?

“Rumors mostly,” says Marlowe. “If that’s the Queen’s calling card, your Decomm friend didn’t do this.”

011 shakes his head. “Give me more time, I may be able to recover something.”

You allow 011 to work.

“Excellent!” says 011. “A challenge worthy of my skills!”

Irrelevant.

You continue scanning the area for clues, anything related to either the Queen of Spades or 327. Marlowe walks alongside you, along with another police officer.

“Hey, over there,” says a police officer. You look over to the object. It appears to be a used battery, consistent and compatible with the P22 Laser Revolver. You scan it.

> SCANNING…

Marlowe says, “What makes you think that’s worth anything?”

>:: It has to be. I am sure.

> RESULTS: Fingerprints – Male, aged 35-40, Caucasian. Searching records now…
> CLOSEST MATCH: Rex Diamond, 37, substantial criminal record.

Marlowe smirks. “Diamond, eh? He’s the head of the local Mob.”

>:: Do you know where he is?

Marlowe grunts, taking a drag on his cigarette. “Unfortunately, Decommissioner. Me and the good Officer do not know.”

>:: You are lying to me.

Marlowe crosses his arms. “What makes you say that?”

>:: A substantial number of things. But you know where he is. Do you not?

Marlowe shrugs. “Hey, I’m paid to keep on eye on him and make sure nothing bad happens to him. You got that?”

>:: He is at the Noblesse Oblige Club is he not?

Marlowe blinks, surprised. “How’d you-“

>:: 327 was sighted there last. In which case, he must be working for Diamond.

Marlowe crosses his arms. “Smart cookie.”

011 walks over, a chip in hand. “I recovered what I could, only 11 seconds. What is our next step?”

11 seconds. It is the last 11 seconds of 533’s life. He faces the ground first, the vision is littered with static and artifacts. But you can clearly see a Decommissioner standing over him. Next to him is a man in a smart suit, with a heavy smirk. The Decommissioner fires his gun, ending the silent 11 seconds.

>:: The records match the video. That is Rex Diamond.

011 says, “Then why do we not arrest him? Part of our job as Decommissioner is to arrest criminals when we can is it not?”

>:: It is not that simple.

“What do you mean?”

>:: This man, Rex Diamond. He has bought several high-ranking Officers in the Sector Police along with being in good grace with the Sector Overseer. He may go to prison, but it will be a relatively comfortable sentence of only a few months. Then he will be back on the street.

011 tilts his head, apparently confused. “Why does this happen? My manufacturers told me I would expect the full assistance of the Sector Police.”

>:: That does not make them perfect.

You and 011 arrive at the Noblesse Oblige. It is a very finely built building, and you can hear music from inside. You walk up the steps to meet the doorman.

The doorman holds out his hand to you. “No entry. Sorry, guys.”

>:: We are Decommissioners.

The doorman swallows. “Um. No entry…” He sees you two stare at him. He knows what a Decommissioner does. “… to… everyone except Decommissioners.” He opens up the door. “Come on in.”

011 nods to him as you and him walk in. “Thank you!”

You walk into the club. Nicotine fills your sensors as you see people in fine suits and dresses walk about, chatter at their white tables, and drink quietly as the music plays. A fine Elysium Luxury Robot sings, her vocals tuned to be absolutely perfect. You at least look relatively inconspicuous, but 011 draws some attention.

>:: Stay by me.

011 huffs a bit. “Fine.”

You walk up to the VIP entrance. Two huge men stop you.

“No entry,” one of them says. “Orders of the Club owner Mister Diamond.”

The two guards glance at each other, nervously.

011 nods. “Yeah, so let us in.”

Pathetic.

They look at each other, then shrug. “I dunno, Roy. You think it’s time to take a break?”

“Yeah,” says Roy. “Let’s ditch.” The two guards leave the entrance. It is now open to you. Very good. You open up the door, then head up the red carpeted stairs with 011.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_H-gpgL17F4

You open up another door, into the VIP lounge overlooking the main hall of the club. Your presence immediately scares off most guests and robots, who carefully creep out of the room when they see you. At the very edge, by the covered railing is a man joined by two beautiful Luxury robots. You could care less if he had licenses for them, you need him.

The two robots turn their heads to you. You gesture for them to go. They leave, confusing Rex. “Hey? What’s going on?” He turns around to see you. An old, balding fat man in a suit, a cigar between his teeth, and heavy green eyes. “Oh… lookie here. A pair of D’s. And not the squeezable kind.”

>:: You are Rex Diamond?

He nods, taking his cigar out of his mouth with a bandaged hand. “That’s me. The hell do you want?”

>:: I am looking for DCM-13/6322-327. You know where he is.

Rex rolls his eyes. “Never heard of him.”

011 says, “You have broken the law, Mister Diamond. We are authorized to use force.”

“Pffft.” Rex sits down, grunting. “You can’t touch me.”

You sit down next to him at the table. The only light comes from the stage below and the candles on the table.

>:: Cooperate, Diamond.

Rex crosses his arms. “Why should I? What’s in it for me?” He points to you with his broken hand. “Hell, tell you what, I got five guys with Sector Sweepers in the next room over who’d love to turn Decommissioners like yourselves into colanders.”

>:: He broke your hand. Did he not?”

Rex narrows his eyes at you. “And what if he did?”

>:: That is a sign of a Decommissioner that did not want you dead. You may kill me, yes. But the sentence for destruction of a Decommissioner, which we already have proof of, is death. You may get away with it, perhaps only twenty years in prison. But rest assured, we have all the time in the world here. And we can do whatever we like with you. We are not Sector Police.

Rex grits his teeth, leaning on the table. “… what do you want to know?”

>:: Where is 327?

Rex groans, rubbing his second chin. “Look… that Decomm is- He swore he’d come for me if I crossed him.”

>:: You will be in prison protected by guards. It is not like he will get within three hundred meters without being disintegrated.

Rex smiles. “Hey, I got my own cell there too. You’re welcome to join me.”

You kneel besides 011.

>:: Are you okay?

011 looks at you, one of his eyes flickering on and off. “Systems-&%#$- Systems… failing.”

You stand up.

>:: Captain Evans. Storm the Building. We have a Decommissioner down. Call for repair drones.

The SWAT team rushes through. “Go, go, go!” You run up through the door 327 went through. A cadre of Officers follow you, with shotguns and rifles.

> CONNECTING TO SECTOR POLICE DISPATCH OVERWATCH
> “Overwatch! Target is northbound through the alleys! Intercepting!”
> “Copy. Drones will continue tracking.”

You bust through the door, ending up in an alley. One of the Officers behind says, “There!”

327 is running. A Police Cruiser rolls up into the exit. The Officers get out and point their guns. “Down on the ground!”

327 responds with precise fire. One has his hand explode, another is kneecapped. They both fall to the ground. The Officers behind you stop to fire at him as you run at him.

327 jumps and breaks the windscreen, ending up in the driver’s seat. He connects with the controls immediately and backs out of the alley.

“What the hell happened?” one of them asks. “Everything’s dark.”

“No shit. That must have been some kind of Ion Pulse.”

You continue running, running.

Your left leg gives out, jamming. You continue running on your right leg, dragging the left along with you.

Out of an alley steps a woman, in a fine black dress and high heels. Her skin is pale and her eyes are hidden beneath a pair of sunglasses. She flicks her red hair and looks down at you, smirking. “What’s this?” she says quietly. “A Decommissioner off his guard?”

You attempt to stand up.

You can't complete the mission if you let yourself fail.
Doubly so if you don't upload all of the critical information to HQ so that the other Decomms can pick up the trail.

This is the kind of illogical, emotional, and plain pathetic course of action that 626 hated so much about humans.

But sometimes, I get the privilege of finding a very good volunteer. Or, maybe in your case, someone who needs help.”

She giggles a bit. “What? Cat got your tongue?” She shakes her head. “Oh, of course.” She grabs you beneath the arms, and starts dragging you into the alley. “Do not worry, Decommissioner. I happen to have a magic touch with mechanics and robotics.”

>>
>>33173931
1. The Decommissioning system is more or less an attempt by Corporations and the Earth Government to cheat against what they see as an inevitable Robotic Rebellion. AIs and Robots eventually develop personalities and thoughts and feelings of their own when left to their own devices. Decommissioners exist as a way to prevent that by stifling the growth of a Robot by killing it outright.

Admittedly, there are more efficient systems out there like memory wipes and the like. But most Corporations take the Decommissioning route so that people continue to buy better and newer models.

2. The protagonist died due to some actions by the players and some faults of my own. I won't say much else.
>>
>>33173987
If it's possible to do that before a bot gets slated for decomm. Veteran cops that perform well, luxury/family bots, etc. are bots who people would want to keep.

>>
>>33174084
I don't want to use the term bad or good end. There are just a number of ends that can be interpreted one way or another.

In this case, 626 was taken by the Queen of Spades, but that doesn't necessarily mean he was killed. Next thread might surprise you.

>>
>>33174445
The first Decommissioners were actually humans. Most of them served pretty long periods that could go into decades, as long as they were paid decently. A Decommissioner who worked for twenty years could expect to have Decommissioned several thousand Robots.

However, the first Robotic Decommissioner is the stuff of legends. Built in 2120, it was more or less just a drone that would fly around and Decommission robots slated for Decommissioning. It continued for over 30 years stopping only a few hours to rest and recharge and by the end of it had gathered over 12,000 Decommissions.

They never recovered the first Decommissioner however. Some say it's still floating around, and is jokingly referred to as the cause of "phantom decommissions", where a Robot slated to be Decommissioned is Decommissioned with a discernible cause.
>>
>>33174246

>>
>>33172326
What can change the nature of a decommisioner?
>>
>>33174821

D
>>
>>33174821
Like I said, Robots tend to develop personalities and moralities and quirks on their own. This eventually takes over their programming.

Because of the nature of Decommissioning work, it's actually quite rare to see Decommissioners live past a year or two. The oldest Decommissioner today is only about five. (Not including Robot Batman.)
>>
>>33174665
I don't really like or care for the lesbian shennigans as long as it doesn't cloud what's important
>>
>>33174874
That would actually make for an interesting future when we get there in three generations.
