After overhearing an interesting conversation between the dock manager and an apparently corrupt priest in the cafe, you feel that perhaps you might just be taking your first steps into the darker sides of this city's economy. With Tear none the wiser, you finish up your lunch together, then take your leave. The rest of the afternoon is your to do with as you please.

Stepping out of the cafe, Tear hovers by your head. "Was there anything else you wanted to do today, or are we returning to the store now?"

You pause, then "we don't really have as much stock as I'd like. I think we should go to the dungeons today."

Tear nods, "that seems like a logical choice. Though unless we take the time to locate one of our acquaintances ourselves, we would be forced to contact the Adventurer's Guild and have them called in."

Let's go to the pub see if Charme is here. WE need to talk to her without Tear listening, anyway
>>
>>33142031
Not really. Charme lives with us, Louie moonlighted for us until he got butthurt, Caillou is still in his broody "I don't need you" phase, we only briefly met Elan and we never saw the other people.

>>
>>33142031
The business card itself marks the Adventurer as a member of the Guild, which permits them access to the dungeons. Granting the card to a merchant essentially guarantees that the adventurer will work with that merchant. As far as we're concerned, if you know an Adventurer has a card, you can put out a message through the Guild asking them if they would like to accompany you.

"Yeah... hey, Tear. Where can we go in the dungeons that would have those elemental crystals?"

"Hmm," the little fairy contemplates, "I wouldn't know off-hand, though I could inquire through some sources."

"Can you try that while I go look for Charme?" She nods, and you smile appreciatively at her. Wishing you luck, she leaves you alone in the street. Now you'll just have to try to find Charme.

You don't even question where she'll be, making directly for the pub. Inside, the crowd is significantly less than usual with only a handful of the regulars in the corner tables. The bar is deserted. The barman nods a greeting, and doesn't say a word as he pulls a pint of Charme's favorite, gesturing you to an unoccupied table towards the back of the room.
You thank him, tipping him an extra coin and take your seat at the table. As you sit, Charme pulls up a chair from the next table over and plonks down next to you, taking her drink as she does so.

"Heyy, what's up Recette? Didn't think I'd be seein' ya round here this time of day? Did you need me for something?"

"I do," you tell her. "I wanted to go to a dungeon today. We could use some more stock, and I need to get some elemental crystals by tomorrow. I'd love it if you came with me." You wait for her answer.

Charme smiles jovially, "sure thing Recette! I'd love to come with you. And I'll visit the dungeon with you, too!"

"Wait, what?"

A cough. "Never mind. Shall we get going?"

"Yeah! But, just one more thing." You lean in closer, whispering conspiratorially across the table. "I think I need something stolen. Discretely, without Tear or anyone else knowing. Can I trust you?" You fix her with a serious look, telling her just how important this is.

Her face stiffens, then creases into a serious frown. "Yeah, you can trust me. Do you want to discuss it now or wait until later?"

"Not here," you tell her, "today I've learned to be wary talking in a public establishment." She nods, then pushes her chair back to stand up.

"Well then, how about we go raid for some loot and maybe discuss a little about nothing important on the way?" She grins at you, and you make to follow her. On the way out, you notice more than one head quickly turn away before you can notice them watching you.

The two of your quickly make your way towards the Guild district side of town, and one reaching the main street, you wait patiently for Tear to arrive. She does so soon enough, greeting Charme cooly before informing you: "The general opinion seems to be that a place called the 'Crystal Gardens' would be the fastest place to acquire what we need; however it's an extremely dangerous place. The other alternative would be to visit one of the lesser dungeons and to, 'farm' them," she wraps her tongue around the term. "It will take significantly longer, but should be safer. We should keep a lookout for the possessed suits of knightly armor, as they are apparently the most likely to hold a crystal."

By the time she's finished passing you the information, the three of you have arrived before the back door to the warehouse, and once more the guard greets Tear tersely.

>Go for the Crystal Gardens?

"Charme, what do you think? Have you been to the Crystal Gardens before?"

She shrugs. "A handful of times. I'm more used to lingering around the others though. More rookies in those, it's easier to mug a newbie than a wary adventurer."

"Okay. How about the suits, do you think you can take them down?" She laughs aloud.

"Of course! I may be a berk, but I'm a professional berk. They'll be no problem."

They should at least have the technology for public toilets and waterways. Not so good for conspiring, though.

>This is where I raise the always important question about the current state of personal hygiene and sanitation in the setting.
That shit's nasty. I like to think that Pensee is undergoing a magic-induced early-period industrial revolution. So there's most of the niceties of modern-day'ness. Like, you know, toilets and plumbing and houses that are actually nice to live in. Practical clothes that actually have pockets and glassware and such. Except there's no horrible smog covering everything because it's done with magic, not coal. Oh, and no guns and stuff.

It's magic, I ain't gotta explain shit.

"Alright," you say, "we'll go to the Amber Gardens then." The door's peephole slams shut, the gears click and the door opens, revealing a brightly lit little island of green grass suspended in an endless pool of clear water. You step through onto the soft grass, the door disappearing behind you.

On two sides, there are mostly stable-looking wooden rope bridges crossing the water. You step to the edge of the island and look down. And then wish you hadn't. The edge of the 'island' is a sheer cliff to the water a few feet below, which then continues on into the deep. The water, despite being crystal clear, is so deep that darkness coats the bottom. You can't see a thing moving, living or otherwise. Looking around, you realize that every one of these islands is the same: a perfectly vertical column of rock jutting from the darkness, perfectly level with your own and covered with a thin layer of dirt and soft grass.

"Right then," Charme stretches out and draws her blades. "How're we gonna run this one?"

"We just want crystals for now," you tell her, "so just look out for the knights. But let's search this area carefully so we make sure we find everything."

"You got it," she agrees eagerly. She crosses the first bridge ahead of you. It barely even sways under her weight, giving you hope that nothing terrible will go wrong with them. You cross it in turn and it doesn't react at all. Curious, you voice the observation aloud and Tear points out that you're not interacting with the world at all unless you choose to bring it inside the invulnerability field.

Ahead, Charme reaches the center of the second little island. And then throws herself flat on the ground as a gigantic fish leaps from the water, spinning wildly through the air. It passes inches from her head, then falls with a sploosh back into the water.

You rush to the edge to track it, but there's nothing down there but the darkness...
"What in all goodness was that?" Tear exclaims.

Charme shrugs, "it happens from time to time in the dungeons. Don't question it, just get out the way."
As she's facing you to explain this, an armored figure phases into existence behind her, swinging its sword down at her.

"CHARME LOOK OU-", but she's already nimbly dodged out the way, a grin on her features.

Charme faces off against the knight, waiting for it to make the first move. The knight obliges and steps on, swinging clumsily towards her. She back up, easily evading the attack. It swings a second time, Charme stepping away again. Then it lowers its stance, before crashing forwards in a heavy swing.
Charme leaps sideways, rolls under the attack and slices into the back of the armor's kneecap in a single motion. The knee plate twists around the leg, jamming in place and stopping that leg from moving. She weaves away again as the knight tries to recover with another swing, only to hack down as it passes and smashing the thing's arm clean off. Another few rapid movements bring her behind it once again and she stabs down with both blades into the back of its neck.
The thing falls to the ground, a lifeless collection of plates.

"See? No problem," she quips confidently.

You quickly rummage through the plates, and find among them a clear grey crystal. "A Void crystal," Tear comments. "A good start to the trip!"

Indeed, the next two hours of trip does go well. Charme uses her speed and cunning to circumvent most of the dangerous areas of the dungeon, only taking the time to stop and engage the knights whenever you find them. They also seem to be dropping crystals for you at an alarming rate, almost as if the dungeon knew this is what you wanted and was just handing them out to you.

With nine of the needed ten in the bag, you finally come to a larger island. Charme stops you before you can cross the bridge. "That's a lot of bad guys over there," she says, uneasily. "But see that shiny mark on the ground?" You follow her finger, and notice a small white magic circle on the ground. "That's our portal out of this place."

Looking around, you can see now that the circle is on the other side of at least one trap, and five lingering eyebats.

"Hey Tear," you pull her close, "I've got an idea. We'll go out there, then I'll step out of the field and distract the bats. So Charme can rush for the portal. Then we go through after her."
Charme frowns at your idea, "that puts you in a bit of danger though.

You wave it off, "I'll have Tear right beside me! It'll be fine, I'm just worried about you!"

Reluctantly, Charme agrees. Together, you and Tear make your way out into the middle of the large island. Something about the terrain is bugging you, but you can't quite identify what it is. You shrug the thought off, then step out of the field. "HEY, HEY EYEBALLS! YEAH, YOU!" The floating eyes all turn to stare at you. "COME AND GET ME~!"
A sudden whoosh of air knocks you flat to the ground. You desperately look around for the source, and then see it: descending from the sky above, landing almost directly on top of you!

Without hesitating, you grab a fistful of dust from the floor and hurl it at the eyebat's eyeball. As soon as the little cloud hits the eye, the giant bat kicks back, flapping hard and throwing up a miniature dust storm.
Even before you've stood back up from grabbing the dust, Tear is beside you and pulling you back into the field. On the far side of the clearing, Charme has waste no time in starting her sprint for the exit. You take off after her, desperate to get out with what loot you have.
Two eyebats turn to try and bring Charme down, but she neatly slices the wing off one and vaults the other without slowing her pace.

Its eyelids clamped tight shut, the king flaps randomly about the area a few times before its eye flickers open again, and the sound of some terrible energy gathering fills the area. It's preparing an attack against the portal!

You'll be fine in the invulnerability field, and Charme... should be able to make it to the portal before it finishes charging!

"CHARME LOOK OUT!"
Her head jerks to see what you're shouting about then she skids to a dead stop, right as gigantic ray of heat and death blows a long gouge into the floor right where she would've been. She instantly leaps back from the ray as it burns away the earth along its line of attack.
The ray cuts off as sharply as it began, though its a few long heartbeats before your vision returns enough to see the damage: the ground where the portal was is a smoking ruin. The way out is gone.

Recovering quickly, Charme turns to the offensive and cuts her way clear of the three bats surrounding her. Two fall, making a horrible squealing as they perish. The final two quickly flock after her, but she dashes across the open area, forcing the two to spread out as they chase after her. she pivots on the far side, slicing the closest clean down the middle before rolling away from the last one. Then the King begins charging its laser again. You and Tear hurry to the edge of the island, out of Charme's way as she leaps out of the way of the second blast, the ray once again leaving a gigantic groove through the island's previously perfect surface.

Before it stops firing, Charme turns and hurls one of her two blades at the bat. The blade flies true, hitting dead center in its iris. With an unearthly squeal that hurts your eardrums, it judders at the impact and flaps upward, gaining altitude over the island.
In its place, three more smaller eyebats descend, quickly flocking towards Charme.

"Yeah! That's it, Charme! We've got it on the run now!"
She grins that predator's grin of hers, quickly dodging in and out of the new smaller bats and hacking them down with lethal efficiency, even with just one blade. When the king finally lowers himself down to her level again, she rushes forward ready to hit it before it can charge its laser.

Right before she hits it, another smaller bat appears from behind the King's crown. She's already airborne and can't change direction. Time feels like it slows down for you as you watch, helpless, as she tries to move to the defense in mid-air. The bat collides with her. The two of them drop to the grass together in a heap. Then the Eyebat King fires again.

We already agreed with her she can use our stock freely as long as it's for the dungeons

In his defense, pix are basically yen. So you get like, 100 to the $.
Except this is in fantasy past, so accounting for inflation differences their pix now is worth like 100 pix today. Or something. Iunno.

The eyebat is instantly vaporized under the power of the laser. Charme fares little better, lacking any form of protective gear. Her limp body flies like a cheap ragdoll tossed from the pram, hitting the water with a quiet sploosh. Seeing no other threats in the area, the Eyebat King blinks its giant eye once, then begins flapping away into the sky once more.

You dive into the water after her, completely disregarding the fact that now you're outside the invulnerability field, you're visible to the bats once more. You spot Charme, lifeless, sinking rapidly towards the darkness and swim as hard as you can after her. Catching up, you slip one arm around her chest and kick hard towards the surface once more. In the corner of your vision, you can see shimmers of movement from the darkness below, shapes moving quickly between the rock pillars and converging below you. You kick harder, swimming desperately for the surface. You don't look back, though you FEEL something emerge out of the darkness below you. Getting closer, and closer...

You break the surface, throwing Charme against the edge and scrambling out as fast as you can, pulling Charme back onto the shore just in time, as the dark shadow behind you sweeps past the edge of the column and darts back into the darkness below. You let out a sigh of relief. Then hear the terrible sound of that laser charging behind you again.

You turn about, and stare into the eye of your death. A few paces away, you see Tear's panicked face as she races towards you as fast as she can. But she's too slow.

The laser fires. The king squeals. The ray blows past you, inches from you. The remaining bats immediately flutter away in a blind panic, desperate to clear the area.

The king collapses into the dust, a long spear protruding from the side of its body. Holding the spear, one foot gently resting on the now-motionless wing and the other on the still-open eyeball, a young woman in an exotic-looking dress smiles serenely down at you.
"My, my. What a brute. Ah, is your friend alright?"

You check Charme. She's breathing. And despite some light marks across her body, she seems... perfectly fine.
"Sh-she's okay, I think," you tell the stranger. "Thank you! For saving us, I mean."

The lady brings a hand up to her lips, a refined gesture to conceal her gentle giggle. "Please don't mention it. Oh, and if it wouldn't be too much of a hassle for you, would you mind directing me to the market? I was following the main road, though I seem to have taken a wrong turn."

It's Nagi. I don't know much about the game, but I think Recette has way more chemistry with Charme.
>>
>>33146014
>Not Euria
...I guess.

Also it's unfair to judge her chemistry with Nagi in the quest this soon, might be different from the game. Though Nagi's personality isn't exactly ideal for creating chemistry with anyone I concede, despite her qualities as a wife.

Crossing the streams?

GENIUS!

I'll get right on it just as soon as I get done asking these guys about the Androsynth.
>>
>>33146041
What's wrong anon? Don't you want to pay her back? Return what we owe? Compensate her for her contribution to our cause?
>>
>>33146033
Oh, I didn't mean that Recette doesn't go well with Euria. In fact, I'd say that she may even go better with Euria than with Charme, since the clear attempts to get into her pants tend to make Recette uncomfortable.

I was just comparing the two people present.
>>
>>33146033

Yeah. Nagi seems to be a bit oblivious (albeit in an endearing manner), despite her obvious competence and refined manner.
>>
>>33146068
There is a different between compensation and getting into debt, dude. She saved our life, so I'd say giving her the lion's share of the boss loot, a way to civilisation and a job offer would be far enough to repay her.
>>
>>33145928
So I take it you got fed up with anon failing to roll Nagi on the encounter rolls. You held out longer than I was expecting.
>>
>>33142008
>Are you huge yet?
I'm not decu yet.
Yet.

>>33146134
>So I take it you got fed up with anon failing to roll Nagi on the encounter rolls
Pretty much.
Though in all fairness, the only way to get her this session was via a Deus Ex saving event. I actually had a completely different encounter in mind for if you tried to run away.
And another if Charme had made it to the gate before the King had blown it away.
Just let the last one sink in for a moment.
>>
>>33146121
I am not kidding here guys, you give the Nagi directions, fine, but do not ever try to show her the way anywhere, lest you be swallowed into the empty void of space that is her domain (sometimes known as the Nagi Nada) from which no mortal escapes.
>>
>>33146187
>Just let the last one sink in for a moment.

>>33146187
Eh, is Decu really that rip?
>>
>>33146394
Well, his general twitter feed of constant /fit/ generally suggests his cardio is way better than mine, and his last personal Q&A thingy with his players basically said he can bench more than me. So he's rip enough.

Though my goal is somewhat past his current level. We'll see what I can do.

>>
>>33146638
>Would have Charme died if we hadn't dived?
Yup. If you didn't save her, who else would've?
And the things that lurk in the dark are always hungry. Always.

>>33146596
>Are you and Decu going to fight?
I'm not sure how well that would go. Decu likes to punch things, I like to hit people with blunt swords and/or grapple&bite people until they stop trying to stab me with their flick-knives.

>>33146237
>do not ever try to show her the way anywhere, lest you be swallowed into the empty void of space that is her domain
It's actually fine to show her the way to something. It's only if you let her take the lead that things go wrong. Once you let her take the lead, you yourself will not be able to understand in which direction you travel.
>>
>>33146308
I voted for that completely with that result in mind. We had the invinci-field, it would have been fine.

>>33146187
well, Recette dropped the ball for not spotting the eyeball that ambushed Charme. Doesn't really mean anything, other than her competence level being slightly below normal.

I'm okay with what happening if it means Nagi joining the party, but from a story perspective, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. On the up side, this means that Nagi is in a much better position to poke into Charme's past.
