Haha, I got lost on the way home from class because of roadwork. Dunno how long we'll be able to go tonight, I've got work in the afternoon tomorrow.

To sum the situation up, in brief: There's a Russian fleet steaming towards Japanese territorial waters. There's an American fleet conducting exercises two days' sailing away, and every Section Two Agent in NERV-1 is on alert. Including you. You're sitting down in the Cages of the Geofront, where the Evas are kept, sitting on an ammo box that was brought down from one of the armories.

Your appointed second, Agent Nakimura, a middle-height Japanese man, is sitting next to you. You're both smoking cigarettes, despite the protests from the technical and mechanical staff desperately clutching submachine guns and pistols, while your M4 is propped against your leg.

The two hundred fifty men under your command from an over-sized company, and you've got the loosely organized headquarters squad organizing runners and a water line from the non-Section Two staff in the Cages with you, including Shinji. He's standing uncomfortably beside you in his plugsuit, looking for all the world like there's someplace he'd rather be.

“So assuming the Russians do attack and this isn't simply some stupid game of brinkmanship,” Nakimura says from beside you, “and they're making a grab for the Children, which is what Three's given us from that Beria fellow you picked up, nicely done, by the way.... What happens if they make it to us?”

(1/2)
>>
“We buy the Children enough time to get into their Evas and get to NERV-China.” You don't elaborate, and he doesn't ask you to. You both know what that would entail. Shinji, poor bugger, doesn't, so he asks what you mean, and you answer.

“We fight until you get into your Evas, and then we fight until you get out of here. That's what that means, kiddo.”

“W-what about afterwards?”

Fuck no.

Ain't got time for luck.

Also it's kind of out of character. We take what we want, we don't wait for luck to drop it in our lap.

[x]write in: Depends on what Command says, how many of them there are, and how well each side fights.

Also, the Russians may be forcing NERV's hand to sortie the evas outside of an angel attack in order to get political leverage.

>”That's up to the command staff. I had my way, we'd keep fighting. Nobody invades this town and gets away with it.”

“That's up to the command staff. I had my way,” you tell him, “we'd keep fighting. Nobody invades this town and gets away with it. You've put paid to any Angels so far, we'll put paid to any thing else.”

He seems to take some semblance of confidence from your words, and you continue puffing on your cigarette, thinking, despite its inherent danger.

The Russians had a pilot candidate. That means they were planning on getting an Eva somehow. Getting an Eva entailed having enough money to operate it. Since they weren't real big on the whole 'UN membership' gig, despite their spot on the permanent Security Council, beside harassing the UK and USA. The European Union had the Second and Fourth, while the USA provided Evas-03 and -04.

Despite the nuclear exchanges during the Impact Wars, the USA was still an economic and military powerhouse, even though half of the Great Plains were wasteland filled with raiders and bandits that was slowly being reconquered. Russia had actually come out ahead- with the rise in global temperatures, Siberia was now habitable for most of the year, and previously unarable land was now, if not extremely productive, then productive enough to help cover the rest of Russia's crop shortfalls.

What was their goddamn game, you wonder. Putin was too smart for this shit, he'd been near the top of the KGB once upon a time.

(1/2)
>>
>>33131681
“So,” Agent Nakimura breaks in. “You think this is brinkmanship over their pilot-candidate, or what?”

[]”Brinkmanship, it's gotta be. Putin's too smart for this. He knows the EU and USA would love to get Russia's permanent status on the Security Council revoked.”
[]”Or what. The question is what, though? I can't see what they could be gaining by pissing off the USA and UN. Don't forget, the USA's promise to help protect Japan against foreign aggression is still law over there, even with Japan's rise in status following Second Impact.”

The reasoning is pretty simple: "well, Japan isn't safe for our pilots, our embassy was raided, the spies weren't even ours, you guys are crazy. Also you have giant invulnerable death machines, and we want our own to protect us from you."
>>
>>33131693
This >>33131719 has a point of sorts. So my vote goes for it too.

They already have (well, had) a pilot, so there's only one other piece missing.
At the very least, they'd want a consent from the other world powers (regardless of whether they like it or not) on building their own EVA.
It's probably built already, but kept under wraps. And if Japan deploys EVAs first, then that'd give the Russian an excuse to deploy theirs too.
>>
>>33131693

>>
>>33131693
“It's a show of force designed to bait NERV into launching the Evas on a sortie against something other than Angels. Russia wants political capital to take to the UN with this, so they can get their own Eva. Think about it- for the five minutes they've got internal power, they're unbeatable. Figure out how to crack the problem of internal power, suddenly you've got a weapon of mass destruction that can't stop.”

“Also, their pilot candidate in Tokyo-2 winds up dead, someone that shall remain nameless forever cracks their embassy like an egg, and Main Intelligence Directorate is a tail wagging the dog, here. If I were Putin, I'd want the kind of deterrent an Eva provides, both against civil war, and external aggression.”

“The Commander's got balls of steel,” you finish. “He won't play Putin's game. You watch. Russia'll stand down their fleet and the US can go back to pretending they're still relevant, while the UN tries to pretend they're not slowly moving towards a singular world government.”

“Oh,” Nakimura and Shinji both say. “How'd you get so smart, Agent?” Nakimura asks while Shinji scuffles his feet and looks at the floor.

“I read the intelligence reports Section Three generates, and pay attention to the news.” You finish your current cigarette and toss it onto the walkway, then stand and grind your boot onto the butt so it extinguishes.

You pick up the M4 and sling it across your chest, so you can bring it up to fire if you need it, and crack your knuckles.

“I'm walking the perimeter. Nakimua, you're in charge if shit hits the fan. If it does, call the Commander and ask for lawyers, guns, and money. Shinji, want to walk with me?” He nods and begins following you. First you head to the guys watching the elevators. They greet you and Shinji, exchanging nods with you and smiles and handshakes with the Third.

“If you had to assault the Cages, how would you do it?” Shinji looks startled at your question, and thinks it over. You give him all the time he needs, looking for blatant holes, small gaps, or even a possible gap, in the coverage Nakimura set up for you.

“Something not obvious,” he ventures. “M-maybe the vents? They do exit outside, don't they?” You nod, as you move on past the elevator guards, to a stairway leading up to the top walkway.

“The drawback of having a facility underground is that you need to pump air in from the outside, or generate it yourself. It's cheaper to pump air in, so that's what we do. NERV tries to cut as many corners on things like paint, furnishings, and flooring, because that can go to the Evas, or the vent system, or Bakelite. The vents are good, but you can only pipe one man, or two, at most, through the vent shaft entrances and exits. What else?”

He thinks, hard, and then seems to hit upon the light bulb. “The ceiling, right? The vents run through the ceilings of every level and room, don't they? And if you blow a hole in the ceiling, you can just drop out of the vents, behind their men, can't you?” You shoot him a grin and wink.

“Think in three dimensions. Always. It helps. Well, not with girls, but there's a reason the Kanji you use for 'her' means 'someone far away.' I think.” The guys on the topmost walkway report everything's clear, and you head back down for the next level. He nods, and then the internal announcement system crackles to life.

“All Evangelion pilots and Section Two Agents are to stand down. The Russian fleet as adjusted course according to the Japanese Naval Self Defense Force's radioed commands. Thank you for your cooperation.”

[]”Right, that's that, then. Go ahead and go get showered and catch some sleep, Shinji. I'll meet you in the morning.”

“Oi! Who wants to play paintball outside?” The show of hands is disappointed, but it's enough to form two teams of five, including yourself and Shinji. You turn to him, and ask him the same. He thinks about it for a moment, and then-

“Will it hurt?”

“Nah,” you say. “We'll get you a black suit like ours to absorb some of the impact, and then we'll use bandanas as the flags and to differentiate teams. Red versus blue, how about it?” He nods at your assurance it won't hurt, and you ruffle his head. “A helmet and mask, too, I think. We don't want you losing your brains.”

The fellows that have volunteered to participate in the most ancient and glorious sport of paintball capture the flag follow you and Shinji to the armory, after he changes in the locker rooms beside the Cages. You all turn in handguns, rifles, carbines, and ammunition, in exchange for paintball guns. NERV got them standardized, so they all look like Steyr AUGA3s, in addition to having recoil and magazine changes in built in.

In fact, functionally, they were basically Steyr AUGs. That shot paintballs. NERV could spring for the coolest stuff, sometimes. Someone produces eleven bandanas of red and blue coloration, and you select captains.

>Nakimura and Shinji.

“Right,” you decide. “Captains will be Nakimura and Shinji. Shinji gets Red Team and myself to assist him, Nakimura will get Blue Team. You guys want to have one team assaulting, one defending, or both have flags?” The men begin sorting themselves out, taking bandanas from the pile, while you help Shinji get into the black kit all Section Two agents prefer to use when actually going into combat with more intelligence than 'oh fuck someone is attacking a Child or an installation'. It takes a little to find him a gas mask, helmet, and boots that fit, but finally someone has the brilliant idea of handing him female gear.

It works, if he's a little embarrassed. “Don't worry about it. You'll grow into male gear in no time.” He nods, and when everyone's on teams and sorted, you all troop to an elevator, rifles slung on shoulders, and cram in. The elevator dings, and it begins the journey to the 'outside' area of the Geofront.

“Right,” Nakimura says. “Since those Red fucks have got Cryan, and he's actually former SAS, we'll take the hill about a half klick to the south of the lake, and they get the lake side gazebo.”

“Fine by us,” you declare. “Red's gonna kick some Blue ass so hard, you'll think we're Angels.” The men in the elevator break out into a chorus of smack-talk and good natured ribbing, while you, Shinji, and Nakimura work out radio frequencies.

The elevator dings onto the level required of it, and everyone pours out, and then groups themselves into their selected team. Red team has the shorter distance to start point, and you begin walking, Shinji walking beside you. You're carrying both his and your ammo, so he can better keep up.

“All right, boyos. Rules of the game are simple; you get hit, you go down and stay down. First team to successfully grab the flag of the other wins. Shinji, you're in charge, but I'm here to help you if you need or want it. How do you want to play this?” Something goes across his face, and your eyes widen in recognition.

“They'll be expecting us to defend, because they've got the more defensible position, won't they? So we'll take seven guys, and leave three here. The three here will defend the flag,” which is the red bandana tied to a stick and shoved into the dirt beside the lake, “and we'll take the other five and attack them.” He's hesitant as he speaks, but becomes more confident when you nod at him approvingly.

“Can anyone climb trees?” He asks, taken by sudden inspiration. An American named Mayne raises his hand. Shinji grins, and motions him up. The trees are close enough for Mayne to go from the middle limbs to middle limbs, and Shinji gives him his orders. “I want you, Mayne-san, to climb the tree, and follow us from above. When we engage the enemy, you're to continue past them and take out their flag guards while we try to push through.” Mayne is taken by the idea as well, and shoots up the tree.

Shinji turns to the rest of you, and his grin worries you. “Shinji. What are you doing?”

“Thinking three-dimensionally, Cryan-san, like you said to.” Oh. OH. He's going to have Mayne flank them from above, just like the Second Para tried to go above the Royal Irish while you guys were engaged on the ground at Monrovia.”

“By God,” you tell him, “it's brilliant.” He flushes in pleasure at the compliment, and then his eyes widen as he realizes time is wasting.

“Let's go,” he orders. “Uh, what's the standard distance between guys on operations like this?” He asks you quietly, blushing because he didn't think to ask before. You wink at him.

“Ten meter spread, mates. Don't wanna get us all chewed up by a grenade, do we? And Shinji? Good idea on trying to take the momentum and keeping it. You never know what they'll come up with, so loose plans that you can easily change on the fly are as good, if not better, than plans organized down to the second. A good way for everything to be blown wide open.” He nods, and you take point, with everyone else spreading out behind you. You've got Shinji close, though, in case he has a question. He's silent on the first part of the approach.

You've ordered radio silence, but you show him the hand signal motions for the guys behind you to spread out a little more and to keep on the alert. Then Blue Team opens up and the first man goes down, screaming for his mother to simulate taking a hit. The rest duck behind trees and rocks, and you grab Shinji and pull him down behind a fallen log, which shudders under impact from paint balls.

Shinji looks like he's about ten seconds from panicking, the screams of the man doing nothing to help. Eyes clenched closed, lips trembling, chest going up and down at a rapid pace, you lay a hand on his chest.

“Don't panic yet. We haven't even come close to losing. You've got the makings of a plan.” You draw his attention and point upwards, to the trees. His eyes focus on you, widen in surprise when he realizes who you're talking about, and he nods in determination.

“What do you suggest, Mr. Cryan?” You risk poking your head over the log, and catch glimpse of the black-clad enemy team moving around.

“Well... What do you think I would do in a situation like this?” He thinks hard for a moment, face screwed up in concentration, while your two remaining men, a Yamagata and Nobunaga, open fire to force the enemy down and buy Shinji time to think.

“Flank them,” he questions. You shake your head and tell him to try again. He's getting frustrated, you can tell.

“Victory is only grabbing the enemy flag, not annihilating them. A victory can be achieved even with one man left.” The emphasis you put on 'one man left' batters through his rising panic, and his eyes go closed.

“Pin them so Mayne can get the flag?” You nod confirmation, and he grins.

“All units,” he says into the radio. “Push forward!” You grin, clench your rifle, rise, and open fire in controlled bursts, meant to scare, not down. The other two do the same, coming out from their tree and rock, and Shinji stands next to you, firing wildly, but in the correct general direction. A quick rustle from the trees overhead informs you Mayne is taking advantage of the distraction you're giving him.
>>
>>33134987
Yamagata pushes forward, and your eyes widen in horror as a paintball from Shinji takes him in the back. He goes down and starts screaming for a medic, on purpose, no doubt, the bastard, while the Blue Team guys ahead of you turn from their retreat and renew their fire. You take a paintball in the mask and go down, leaving Shinji, Nobunaga, and Mayne. The three guys back at the flag were told to defend it no matter what, so even though they can hear what's going on, they can't come up to support Shinji.

Nobunaga breaks cover and opens fire as well, before he gets drilled by two different Blues, and then Shinji goes down as well, cowering in fear. You can't tell if he's hit or not, but you're halted from speaking to him over the radio when a victorious cry erupts from the top of the hill. Mayne got the flag.

Cackling in glee, you rise and move to Shinji, where you kneel beside him. He got hit in the stomach by two different guys.

You put an arm under his and help him stand. His legs are shaking and he's breathing like a racehorse that's just run a mile race, but he's smiling shyly.

“To the victor,” you yell, “the spoils! Let's go accept those Blue cunts' surrender, eh?”

“Yeah!” He adds, as the three defenders of the Red flag move up to join you, and Nobunaga and Yamagata stand to join you, while the man that went down and started screaming for his mother apologizes to Shinji.

You all place him on your shoulders and carry him up the hill, where Mayne is sitting in a tree with the Blue's flag, grinning, with Blue Team all lined and presenting arms. Shinji sketches them a haphazard salute, and they drop from the stiff formality to congratulate him, grins all around. Mayne drops from his tree and presents the bandana on a stick to Shinji.

“T-thanks, guys,” he says quietly.

“Right,” you say after a moment's deliberation. “I'm finding Shinji somewhere to sleep so he can go to school tomorrow. He is fourteen, after all. We'll give him the victory beer and the beer I owe him sometime this weekend. Probably Saturday afternoon. Until then, if you guys want to get smashed, go ahead. I'm not your officer, though, so if you cunts show up to PT tomorrow morning and get smoked for it, don't blame me.”

A chorus of boos greet your pronouncement, but eventually they comply, and let Shinji and yourself head to the armory where your clothing and personal effects are. “We'll take the train and then walk, I think. It's probably a nice night out, and it'll give you a chance to come off the adrenaline high.”

“O-okay,” he agrees. The elevator ride is silent. Changing out of black combat gear and into civilian clothing is silent. You're fairly certain it's companionable, but just to be sure....

“Something on your mind, Shinji?”

“O-oh! No, not really. I'm just wondering why that was fun, but piloting the Eva wasn't.”

“It's the difference between training. You can make training fun, sometimes, but when it comes time to actually do the job, you've just got to buckle down and get it done. I suggest that's how you look at piloting the Eva, really- a job to get done and get past. Like homework you don't like, I guess.”

“R-right,” he says, and goes back into that awkward silence that seems to be his shield so much of the time. The walk to the train station is silent. The train ride is silent.

>Let him be. Kid's had a rough couple of days. Give him the cell-number.

“Hand me your phone,” you tell him, as you pause outside a convenience store. He hands it over silently as you lead him inside the store, and you put your own number into his cell. “Call me. Anytime, anywhere. If you need to talk about girls, or guys, if that's your taste. And listen. Don't think about things too hard, alright? Sometimes you just need a couple days' perspective.”

You hand him his phone back and find an imported American beer. Eugh. Something Annheiser-Busch. You don't examine it too closely, proper Irishman inside rebelling at buying any alcohol from America. While it's not a proper European brew, it's better than the Japanese stuff the penguin is forced to drink. Poor goddamned penguin.

Paying for the twelve-pack, you lead Shinji back outside, where you both set off once more at a wandering sort of pace, no real hurry to your steps. It's a companionable silence, you hope, but Shinji seems okay with it, so you are too.

Finally you arrive at the apartment. You knock, and Shinji announces himself with an 'I'm home,' while you follow more quietly behind.

You find Captain Katsuragi staring at you holding a twelve-pack of America beer.

“And where have you two been?” She demands, fixing you with a glare as Shinji stands there awkwardly.

“Sorry, Captain, you know how us cunts get when we're riled up.”

“Watch your language around Shinji, Agent Cryan, or I'll have you suspended.”

“I'm sorry, did you think I said 'cunts'? I said 'grunts,' Captain!” She lets you off with a glare, before exchanging good nights with Shinji. You do the same, he flashes you a small smile and 'thanks', and disappears into his room. You find the penguin's refrigerator, and place the beer into it for him.

Out of Sontory's whiskeys I can say that the 12 year Yamazaki was good. As I said above the 18 year was very good. I have not tried the 25 year.
I also like the 12 year Hibiki. It had a pretty different flavor from many other whiskeys I have tried. From my understanding it spends some time during its aging in casks used for plum liquor and that sets it apart taste wise from most other whiskeys that finish in former bourbon barrels or sherry casks.

>Talk to the Captain.

After a moment's quiet contemplation, you retrieve four beers. Two for you, two for Misato. You hand her both quietly, and take a seat on her couch.

“Rough day?” You pop the top and take a sip. Then you make a face at it. 'Fucking Americans, couldn't brew goat piss properly.'

“God, you have no idea,” she comments. “What with your stupid fucking stunt at the Embassy and then disappearing with the Third for almost half the fucking day, and then the Russians! Don't get me started on the Russians, Cryan, or I'll get your ass fired and disappeared in the middle of the night.”

“And the UN. And the United States. Such posturing between three Admirals and a General on teleconference I have never seen, and hope never to again. And then Shinji not coming home until just now. You're not his guardian, you know.”

“I know. As for the Embassy stuff.... It seemed like the best option at the time,” you offer. “I didn't mean to get their pilot-candidate killed, but... Thin margins of victory, even thinner of error.”

“Pilot-candidate? What? The Marduk Institute doesn't have any Russians listed as possible candidates for piloting, deceased or alive. She was Chesnokov's daughter, Cryan.” You feel sick. And even worse than before, if that's possible.

“The Russians forwarded falsified documents to the UN and NERV claiming they'd discovered her on their own, but really they were making it up to gain more support for their bid to get an Eva unit. Our man in their Executive Branch forwarded the memo Putin sent that fired the man responsible as soon as he got it.”
>>
>>33136916
You still feel sick. What the Hell was going on in Russia? Something odd was happening, you were convinced of it.You take another drink of the beer, and wish you were eighteen again. Then all you had to do was go where the Crown sent you, kill who the Crown said to kill, go back to the UK, have a pint at the pub every evening, and maybe find a nice girl to spend a night or two with.

Now though, all this espionage business... It's not like the raids you went on with the 22 SAS, or with the Germans out of Stuttgart.

“Fuck.”

“Yeah, that about sums it up. Next time, if there is a next time, you better have Shinji back well before eleven-thirty at night, got it?”

You sketch her a salute and finish your beer.

“Uh-uh.” She doesn't sound impressed. Whatever. Not your problem if she wants the kid to remain a broken wreck. Not your fault you're trying to put that shiny psychologist degree to use to help a fourteen year old kid.

“I need to be going,” you finally say. “What's your cell phone number so I can call you if we're going to be late?” She begrudgingly gives it to you, and you make yourself a promise never to use it unless you're actually late or drunk.

You toss the beer cans, then exit quietly, and make your way out of the apartment building. You find a cab and get the cabbie to run you to the entrance of the Geofront, where you make your way inside and quietly descend to the barracks rooms for Section Two agents that don't have an apartment on the surface.

You unlock your room with a swipe of your card and find a bottle of Scotch with some left in it. You finish it quickly and collapse onto your bed.

“Fuck.” You shiver, your hands twitch for a firearm, and then you roll out of bed. You go through your morning ritual, and dress. You're on your way to the cafeteria to peruse breakfast when your phone rings.

“Please report to Commander Ikari's office,” the voice says, and then hangs up. Sighing, you press the elevator for the Commander's level, and begin the slow descent up. Fucking Muzak.

When you finally arrive, the secretary ushers you in, and you find the Commander, seated, with the Subcommander standing beside him.

“Agent Cryan,” Fuyutsuki greets you. There's an odd tension in the air that you can almost smell, and the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

“Sirs.”

“Due to... Recent events concerning Russia, the UN has decided it best to forgo activating Unit-04 in America, all things considered. In a month's time you're going to fly to the United States, take custody of -04, and return to Japan with the pilot. Until then, you're to stay on the Third's detail.” Fuyutsuki is the one to speak, he always is. Ikari slides something across the desk, and you pick it up. There's a downside in consolidating the pilots too, in that it makes for one solid target to hit.

With Rei on the other side of town, she's isolated, and that goes both ways. Putting them all in one basket means that any enemies, angel or otherwise, only need to hit ONE target.

“Thank you, sirs. Is there anything else I need to know about the Fourth?”

“She's half-Japanese, half-British. The Americans are making use of their special relationship with the United Kingdom to provide an Eva, while the British provide the pilot. It's not.... To our taste,” the Subcommander explains, “but it's better than having them refuse to allow us access to the Eva or the pilot. If they decided to deny us one, the other would back the play. International politics, Special Agent, are often decidedly slimy.”

You nod your- agreement? Acknowledgment that they've blessed you with information? Whatever it is, you nod, and then field another question.

“Sirs, would it be possible to consolidate the living arrangements and protection details of the First, Third, and Captain Katsuragi in order to better facilitate protection and security?” Ikari leans back in his chair, and they begin discussing something in rapid-fire Japanese, too fast for you to keep up with. You settle back onto the balls of your feet to wait, but they finish and then turn back to you.

“Yes. Assume this will be the case for the Second and Fourth, as well. If not in the same apartment, at least in the same complex. When the Fourth arrives we'll move the Third, First, and Katsuragi into an apartment or house large enough to accommodate three teenage girls, one teenage boy, and the good Captain, Special Agent.” The Subcommander speaks, and when he finishes, Commander Ikari inclines his head in clear dismissal.

>>33138287

My impression of Rei's place is that it's one hell of a soft target.

I could see putting her somewhere that's not a constant constructionsite shithole with zero neighbors, if not in the same building as Shinji.

Neighbors are good, provided you've vetted them. They're like extra security, going about their lives, noticing all those little things out of place that infiltrators may leave around.
>>
>>33138345
“Oh, one last thing,” the Subcommander adds. “Don't go overboard with the house. Seven bedrooms at maximum, and two of those had best contain bunk beds for the Section Two agents sleeping there. We find live-in security to be much more effective than men half-way across a city.”

“Yessirs.” You snap to attention, salute, about face, and exit.

Actual Security expert here. This guy has it right, the only times you want to consolidate resources is when you and/or your enemes would have a harder time hitting a single fortified target.

Given that we have moles/traitors in the ranks with absolute certainty (Russian foreign national getting that close to Rei without anyone noticing? Bullshit. And that's BEFORE we get into the meta-fact of her being so much more important to Gendo's plans than Shinji or Asuka), putting all our eggs in one basket is the last thing we want to do.

The actual smart thing would be to move Rei into the general area, but not in the same building. Allows for overlapping security and shared oversight without compromising each individual area.

Different houses in the same neighborhood at the closest, 10-15 min drive at the maximum between all targets.

And don't tell me we don't have the resources to sub-network like that. Section 2 is a cross between the CIA and the goddamn Navy Seals who like to pretend they're JUST security, and NERV's budget just reads 'yes'.

Objectives for us.

EASY
[ ] Don't die in an Angel attack.
[ ] Continue to be Best Mildly Psychotic Irish Big Brother for Shinji and the other Pilots.

NORMAL
[ ] Get Shinji to make a move on one (or both if he's feeling brave) of his love interests.
[ ] Find the love interest that doesn't win (if Shinji doesn't decide to live the dream) someone nice they can be happy with.
[ ] Help Kaji and Misato work their shit out.
[ ] Save Kaji from death.
[ ] Hook up Ritsuko and Maya.
[ ] Save Touji from his rather unpleasant fate.

HARD
[ ] Murder the fuck out of the Committee for Human Instrumentality.

DANTE MUST DIE
[ ] Get Kensuke a girlfriend.
>>
>>33138503
Not that I don't agree that it's risky, but then you'd probably critique consolidating the first and second child in the same building, and that's been done in canon and it worked out fine. If there are spies, I have a feeling they aren't as spread out in Section 2 as you think they are. Meta wise, I'm fairly sure the Russian thing happened because plot, not because of a critical discrepancy in security detail. Gendo wouldn't let it go that far, because as you said Rei is critical to his plan.

Christ on his fucking cross. You can smell a fourteen or sixteen hour day ahead of you already. If this is what promotions bring, you want demoted, thanks. First, the houses. You don't want Rei too close to the rest. She had to have been separated to begin with for a reason. You make your way from the Commander's office to your own cubicle on Section Two's level, and find a steaming pot of coffee. Fuck the rest of Section Two, you're going to need this shit. It is delicious.

First, you must assemble the tools of your trade. You boot your computer up, and find two notepads and lots of pencils. And then you begin looking at real-estate websites in the Tokyo-3 area. The first promising hit is twenty minutes from the GeoFront's entrance. It's a newer neighborhood, and the site, something generic about something you could careless you need more coffee, has got two houses that fit the bill. One's three bedroom, two bath, one story, twelve minutes at a sedate pace in a sedan, from the other, which is six bedrooms, three baths. They're both distinctly American style, but considering the Earth's reduction in population, it makes sense.

You write down the contact number for the agent, along with the locations so you can go check them out yourself. And Section Two's preferred armor-provider, so you can beef the walls, doors, and windows up.

MC doesn't even have an idea she exists at this point.

Considering that tangfag has written about being attracted to misato, don't see a problem with continuing to hit on her.
>>
>>33138532

Eh, not sure I'd be comfortable with that much pull on the quest, actually.

And to be honest, I'm not exactly some kind of expert military analyst or something, I've just been working bodyguard duty for a long time. Properly securing VIP(s) is basically my entire career.

Though I will tell you that anyone as important as the Pilots are have several redundant security measures, especially with NERV's influence. given that Tokyo-3 is basically the world's largest company town, we probably have Section two plants everywhere.

Immediate neighbors? Section two.

School's custodial staff? Section two.

Bus drivers? Section two.

PaperBoy? Section two.

Pizza guy when they order out? Section two.

Plumber? Section two on bitch duty.

If Shinji were to walk into a room with ten people in it, two of them are probably going to be undercover Section two with a small assault team in a flower-delivery van across the street in case shit REALLY hits the fan.

If we're doing our job(s) right, Section two is like an Agent in the Matrix movies. Seemingly nowhere, but functionally everywhere.

Which is why we should be conducting a mole hunt to figure out why someone questionable even got within the same building as Rei, much less as close as he actually ended up getting.

You stare at the coffee pot. Then at the drawer of your desk with the flask in it. You make a decision. You pour the entire flask into the coffee pot and take a sip. Yep, that's the stuff. Now fortified, you pretend not to notice the price tag on the houses. You've got a semi-blank check, and, if you have to, you can make up the shortfall from your own salary.

Now come the agents. Hours and hours of trawling through psyche profiles, fitness reports, and regular reports concerning the details for the First, Third, and Captain pass, as you slowly become more zombie-like, coffee dwindling as well as your intelligence. You break fifteen pencils, one junior agent's nose, and fill the note pads up.

“Jesus Fuckin' Christ,” you whisper to yourself at three-thirty in the afternoon of that same day.

>Write-in: Call the real-estate agent for a walk-through of both houses, then call Captain-Katsuragi and have her meet us at them.

You dial the number on your notepads, then shove them into a briefcase.

“Thank you for calling Wind of Tomorrow real estate agency! How may I help you?”

“Uh, yeah, I need to speak to, uh, anyone, about the houses in the Shivering Falls neighborhood?”

“Wonderful! I'll transfer you.” Mother. Fucking. MUZAK. Stifling the urge to throw your phone into a wall, you journey to the mystical land of fast cars and faster motorbikes. It's gotta be the Aston-Martin, today, since you're toting a briefcase. You toss the briefcase into the car, then slide into the driver's seat yourself.

“Hello?” The voice is entirely too perky. You resist the urge to growl.

“Yes, I need to talk to you about the six bedroom and three bathroom house, and the three bedroom, two bath, house in Shivering Falls.”

“Fantastic! What do you want to know?”

“Can you show me the houses, Miss?” She makes appropriate noises of delight, you follow the traffic laws, and when you hang up- thank ruddy Christ- you dial Katsuragi.

(1/3)
>>
>>33139301
“Captain,” you greet, when she picks up.

“Agent,” she greets.

“Want to look at houses with me?” Her cries of outrage and shock further your headache into 'pounding murder spike' territory, and you feel your urge to kill something rise too.

“FOR SECURITY PURPOSES,” you bellow over her protests. “We're consolidating the Children, and yourself, since you're the Third's guardian, into one fucking area. I want your opinion on the agents I've selected and the houses I've found for this. Christ, woman,” you nag at her. “You'd think I was bloody proposing.”

“...Fine,” she allows. “I'll meet you there in fifteen minutes.”

“Fine, whatever. And can you bring me some fucking whiskey?”

“Don't push your luck, Agent,” and then she hangs up. Women.

You arrive at the neighborhood, and it's fancy. Fancier than the tenement you grew up in, that's for sure. Shaking off thoughts of the past, you step out of the car and find the agent, some perky thirty-something year old, waiting for you. There's enough space between houses that arguably you wouldn't need Section Two to move in as 'neighbors', but it's going to happen anyway. Taking paranoia to an institutional level and beyond is Section Two's past time.

Arguably, they're fairly perfect. The bedrooms don't have balconies, the windows aren't big enough for someone to abseil through, and the roof is flat enough to post snipers on. Inside they're new, freshly built, and smell as such. You grunt.

“We'll probably be taking 'em,” you tell the woman, then ignore her and wait for Misato, leaning against the Aston-Martin.

She's promptly four minutes, five seconds late. Whatever. You jerk your head back at the house behind you.

(1/3)
>>
>>33139315
“Good enough?” She nods her head, and you take the briefcase from the passenger seat and shove it into her hands. “Here, review this while I sign the paper work.”

The real-estate woman protests when you take the two contracts from her, but when you hand her your NERV-ID, she utters a small squeak and lets them go. You hastily scrawl your signature, with an added 'empowered by NERV', and hand her a check for both amounts. She leaves, and Misato continues to go over the notepads you forced into her hands while you call Section Four.

“Yeah, I need someone to come reinforce, uh,” you give them the locations, and add: “Promptly, too. These need to be ready by the end of the month.”

“Jesus, Cryan. How long have you been awake?” You glance at your watch, then peer at the sun from behind your sun glasses.

“Since four-thirty,” you inform her.

“You did all this in a day?”

“Need booze, Cap'n.” She glares at you, then finally shoves a bottle of Scotch into your hands. Oh the poor woman. She bought you GOOD booze. She bought you fifteen year Glenfiddich single malt. You promptly begin guzzling it.

“Yes. I'd set up the veterans on the details of the First and Third with the new guys, to help them learn the ropes, though. You're getting two separate houses, though? Why?” You shrug.

“Commander Ikari had Rei separate from the rest for a reason. I'm not going to ignore that, or ask him what it is. Pushed my luck enough, today, I think. Anyway, picked houses close to each other so one team can support the other if needed. Plus, this way, the Children get live-in security at all times. We'll turn two of the bedrooms in each house into bunk rooms, so there's Agents there with the Children all the time. It'll be pushy into their privacy, but as long as we respect their alone time, I think they'll be okay with it.”

“Right... Well, as long as the detail aren't bringing in girlfriends or wives....”

“No, no, nothing of the sort will be going on. Pure professionalism. Speaking of the Children, how's Shinji?”

It's her turn to shrug. “He seemed kind of tired because you had him out so late, but Aida and Suzuhara were jealous he got to play paintball with former soldiers.”

“It happens. They'll get over. As long as he's doing okay, we're gold.”

“Yep. All right, I've got to get back to work. Unlike you, some of us have paper work.” She takes her leave, and then you realize you never filed reports for the incidents from yesterday. Good Lord. Captain Thierry'll have your head.

>Head back to base to do PAPERWORK.

You have been defeated. Your antics and awesome have gotten you nowhere. You are know confronted with the enemy of all Agents, Special, or not: Paperwork. You get into the car and take your sweet time driving back, considering trying to foist off onto Smith or someone. You never did like Smith, the bitch.

But no, they'll expect your signature on your reports. “JAYSIS FOOKIN' CHRIST,” you thunder, as some cunt in an Audi blows past you. Fuck the police, you decide, this cunt wants to race- FUCK HIM. Getting back to base sooner means paperwork, the dreaded enemy of all Agents.

Other than the cunt in the Audi, the drive back is sedate and slightly calming. You finish the Glenfiddich and toss the bottle into a trash bin when you arrive at the motor-pool. Then you make your way up to the cubicle you call 'office', and begin your battle with the enemy.

It's long. It's boring. It's telling the bosses what happened in a way that won't get you fired, which you're not the best.

You're interrupted when Smith bursts into your Fortress of Solitude, your cubicle, a smile on his face.

“We've found the mole, Cryan! It was Captain Thierry! Commander Ikari's had him executed by firing squad just now!”

[]Celebrate. You never liked his goddamned porno mustache anyways.
[]”Huh. He always did right by me. I didn't see that one coming.”

Now we know why we got that promotion. Some poor bastard got promoted to take Thierry's place and now we've taken that poor bastard's spot.
>>
>>33139870
/pol/ senses tingling.

Captain Thierry was not the mole. He's being executed instead of the mole, as part of a cover-up.

Of course, our character isn't nearly shadowruns enough to realise this

>”Huh. He always did right by me. I didn't see that one coming.”

”Huh. He always did right by me. I didn't see that one coming. Even if I never could stand his goddamned porno mustache. Who's he being replaced with?” The celebration inside is intense. You hated that mustache and the way it stared at you.

Smith shrugs. “Some no name from Division Five,” he tells you, referring to Section Two's internal affairs division. Oh. Oh god. Oh fuck oh fuck what if he audits your expense card and sees all the fucking booze and nice hotels and the prostitue that one time- Calm. Calm. He's not going to audit you. He's too busy investigating Thierry's contacts and what not. You, you'll blame it on Smith. Yeah. That's the way to do it. Fucking Smith, snagging your card putting tons of shitty Scotch and expensive hotels on it and now he's staring at you with that smug smile of his. He hasn't even been here a year.

“Anyway, we're celebrating Thierry's early retirement down in the cafeteria, if you want to join us.”

“Thanks, but I've got to finish this, uh, report on the effects of booze and coffee on shooting. Yeah, that sounds good. Jaysis fookin' Christ, get out, goddamn it.” He exits your cubicle and you return to your paperwork, slowly conquering it.

Slowly. Surely. You begin cutting the mound in your 'In' box down while the mound in your 'Out' box grows.

And then you finally reach for another sheet of paper and realize it's over. You've finished the battle for another week.

[]Go join the party to celebrate.
[]Go to bed.
[]Write-in.

>Go to bed.

You stand. It takes effort. It takes will. But you triumph over the chair, which is comfy, and begin staggering your way to the elevators. You check the time. Seven thirty at night. You feel the horribly odd desire to cackle with insane glee at the thought of more than four hours of sleep. You look around the elevator. Empty. You let loose with the cackle.

You're more tired than you thought, if you're cackling with insane glee in an empty elevator. It dings. You step outside. The smell is new. Like chocolate chip cookies. The sound is some sort of lullaby. You blink. You see your mother standing in front of you.

“Oh no. Oh fuck no. Fuck this fucking shit,” you declare to the thin air. “You've been dead for thirteen years, you fucking cunt. Just upped and fucking died on me, no good goddamn reason. I could have played rugby in university, been someone other than a killer, but no, you fucking die! So fuck you, Mam, fuck you right in the ass with a rusty nail!”

“Don't be so hateful, dar-”

“JAYSIS FOOKIN' CHRIST,” you bellow at the apparition. “I'm not going to stand for this shit! Get out of my goddamned head you whore slag!”

And then as suddenly as it was there it's gone, and you feel yourself swaying on your feet. You manage to make it to your room, key the door open, and collapse onto the bed, descending down into the warm embrace of sleep, and you know no more.
