As the glow subsides, she murmurs softly, “Oba-san had Ginku-sensei lay a seal on me to prevent me from releasing her from the Burning Brightness of All Fires myself. The Barrier has to be broken from the inside, not the outside. I can send someone else there if they allow me, but I cannot call it up myself.” That also means she's being functioning without one of her highest tier Barrier Combat techniques as a result. Not entirely unimpressive.

“So, I have to go in and break the Barrier? Why would she stop me from doing that? That's ridiculous.” Wait. That happened....around 150 or more years ago. You're only seventeen. “I'm not the first person to try this, am I.” Your fingers, unburned, probably icy cold against her hot skin, slide from her horn down to her cheek, and you trace her lips slowly.

“No, Ryukusa-tan.” Oh, she's all yours now. “Er Yin tests them to make sure they are the true keeper of Ame-no-Horobi-no-Mikado's mikoto. If they are not, they never return from the Burning Brightness.” That's a sobering sort of thought. Kiku's powers might still harm you, but Er Yin is probably better than you are. “She won't challenge you, or make you fight. Her tests are not of the flesh or the body, Ryukusa-tan.”

You still have other questions needing answers, and you keep them in mind, but this needs a little more clarity for safety's sake. You run your fingers along her other cheek, and she leans into your hand, her eyes mere golden slits.

“I see.” She doesn't wish to admit it, but it looks like you and Er Yin have a quality or two in common. “No riddles, or puzzles, or magical things?”

“No....and not even Hinata-hakase can break the seal....” She sounds sad, almost forlorn, her mind starting to wander with your caress.

“Tell me about the Kamuy, and the Kami, Kiku-chan.” The lovely creature sits up a little and your cool, gentle fingers slide to touch her throat lightly, and her eyes fall back to near-closed again.

That will break the seal, and then you must destroy the Barrier itself, which may be very difficult, because Er Yin Long will be powerless to help you.” Sh looks at you and smiles, a delicate little teasing smile. “I will need to be more rested, and I would say you need to be rested, but I am not sure you need even that, baka-dragon. You have more energy than five fire dragonettes.”

She is very serious and it doesn't take Water Eyes to see that she is concerned not for herself, or for Er Yin, but for her sister. And perhaps even a little worried at what her sister might thing if you treated her that way.

“It will be fine. I'll take care of all of you, just as you need me to. You are in danger now to, you know....” She looks down, all too aware of how this goes against Clan Ryo and the old snake in every way. “And I will be just what your nee-chan needs me to be, in every way. She is already more for me than I had ever expected of her, you silly firebrand. Go, and take care of yourself, so I can take care of the others.”

“Arigatou, ecchi-dragon,” she mutters under her breath, her cheeks flushed.

You lean down and kiss her forehead, and her huge, bright eyes come up. You whisper softly, “I promised, Miko-Kiku-chan,” with your forehead pressed against hers. A faint, strange moistness touches your cheeks, and you look into her huge, bright eyes, filled with hope and not a little adoration. There is steam rising from them.

“Hai, Ryukusa-aniki.” She bows and shuts the door quietly.

Sighing you walk out into the living room. Akari and Yui are sleeping quietly under the kotatsu, Akari's little spoon to Yui's big spoon. You would have thought it the other way around, really. Of course, Akari is the one who got beat up. Still, they're happy and that is what really matters.

You smile and silently walk to where your two subordinates – your best friend, and your half-oni servant, really – are sleeping. You go to your knees easily and then simply stretch out and look at them for a moment. They are happy and safe, safer and happier than they may have ever been in either of their lives.

“Are you going to sleep, aniki?” Akari's voice is soft, gentle, and much better than it was a few hours ago.

“Not just yet, niji. Do you feel up to working tomorrow? We need to train Kiki and Yui.” Your words are hardly a whisper, any more than hers are. “We can work around it if you are feeling poorly, and do not think I will not notice.” More likely you'll have Miko-Kiku tell you, but it's the same difference.

“I will be fine. None of these people can really hurt me. Yui might be able to, but it isn't fighting she needs to learn.”

“No, and I will take care of that too. We'll keep them all safe.” You lean down and plant a kiss on Yui's forehead, and she smiles, and curls into Akari a little more. Akari turns her head for you, her eyes still closed, and you kiss her softly upon the forehead. Her hand slips free of the blankets in utter silence, and she traces your horn, her fingers making your entire body tingle.

“You should let us give you what you need too, Ryukusa-chan.”

She smiles and snuggles back against the oni-tomboy, and sighs deeply, already asleep.

So you stop putting it off and walk silently into the room. Yes, she's there, in your bed, asleep, her robes loose though not exposing anything more than soft and pale skin. The bedding is half turned down, for you. She probably fell asleep waiting on you.

You take off your weapons, slowly and silently, including the chain wrapped about the stump of your left arm. Akari's little clasp system is quite useful as a spur of the moment thing. Still, as much as you'd love to simply join her, this is NOT a safe room for that sort of thing. Even blocked, a window is a window, and just because Anonimous isn't around doesn't mean something else won't crash through.

Still, you manage to undress quietly and carefully, and you clean up with a little bit of Water dragonette magic. Then you put on your black and silver sleeping robe, and a pair of black silk boy-shorts. You can't sleep in long sleeping robes, you move around too much. Like,. “destroy your clothing completely” type moving around too much. Still, this is a different sort of arrangement. Dressed, you take a deep breath and look down at her. Peacefully sleeping, safe and beautiful. Her cheeks have tiny, dark pink scales, and they appear along her scalp as well, near her wood-like horns. You reach out, not quite touching her horns, your Pearl throbbing softly under your breasts, your horns tingling your nails almost aching. You lie still, running through the exercises in your head in your half waking state. You struggle to limit yourself to three scenarios, because you're kind of hungry. And also you don't want to wake Kiki by twitching.

Bad guy in control of the room, everyone kneeling, bad guy subordinate cooking breakfast. Take out threats to principle first, let bad guy grab principle as shield/bargaining chip, take out non-allied cook, pretend negotiation long enough for Akari to distract, then off bad guy.

Bad guys trying to pretend everything is okay, keeps principle under direct control, makes others do morning stuff in kitchen to take you off guard. Trap is in hallway and in room across from yours. Leave by window, enter through secret pantry entrance, allow allies to take control of their own situation. People making trap come to assist, take out them while moving to principle, maim all opponents, clean up after principle is rescued.

Enemy is powerful half-demon. Allies possessed, going through routines until you arrive. Throw up Barrier. If Barrier includes demon, incapacitate allies, use P-Yui as hostage to counter P-Akari's possession. If countered, take Akari and hunt demon. If possession too strong, hunt demon down, kill it, using P-Akari's lowered skills as distraction and surprise weapon against demon. If demon not in barrier, isolate P-Kiki, incapacitate P-Yui and P-Akari, try and help P-Kiku to recover senses through personal intimate knowledge. Kiku can then assist in removing possessions.

You open your eyes as you wake fully, feeling the young woman you have spent most of the night making love to move gently along your body. It feels....right to waken with her next to you, but not perfect. You remember waking up like this, long ago, in a dark, safe place, with your lovers close. Warm and safe, watching over them and the world, waiting for the Hearth to call upon you.

The smell of food, and the sound of soft voices from the living room means no one has discovered anything untoward or problematic. Kiki seems perfectly content to lie with her head pillowed along your arm, and you smile and curl up against her, her warm body, her sweet breath, and the mingled scents of your love a strange perfume. Yet it is not unpleasant for all that. You close your eyes, and think back, opening your strange mind to the memories you started to recall....

The room was larger, circular. A high, domed ceiling, showing the moon and the sun chasing one another, the teardrops of Yin and Yang forever circling. There is no light, but none of you need it to see by, not really. The huge bed is warm. Your two heralds lie with their heads pillowed along your chest, their tails and hands entwined. Your seer is spooned against your priestess, your priestess' hand resting along your wife's back, the tail of your seer entwined with your own. You wife's body pressed close against you, her head pillowed along your chest, her heart and yours beating in time, her Pearl and yours shining....

Then pain, as the fangs bite deep, venom of a thousand dead youkai spilling into your veins faster than you can still your blood. The flash of red metal falling on sleeping, helpless flesh that is not your own as you struggle to save them....

Your eyes shoot open and you gasp for breath, your heart pounding. Kiki wakens just as abruptly. “Ryu-chan?”

It is....decidedly odd not to have weapons nearby. True, they're just tools, and in a pinch you can kill someone in half a dozen ways with whatever you have handy, but it is still....weird to not have a weapon anywhere nearby.

Kiku suddenly smiles, and reaches over, and pulls a small wooden stick, oblong in diameter, from under her – your – pillows and places it next to your hand. A kaiken knife. The kind of knife a bride traditionally carries when going to her grooms house. “How did you know?”

“Because it's you.”

You giggles softly, and shake your head. “Will you prepare a bath for us, while I speak with Akari-niji-chan?”

“Yes, I can do that. How will you wash your hair?”

“....Kiki-hime.”

“Yes?” You wait for a moment more, and then she blushes. “Oh.”

You kiss her nose lightly, and then her lips, and she melts into that kiss. She is strangely ignorant of the powers, yet she seems to have managed to master at least one. Of course, you immediately recall the momentary surge of her power when you startled her....you HAVE to train her.

“May I have Ryuu Kiki's permission to leave?”

Her cheeks are still red, but that makes her look down shyly. “Yes, Ryu-chan.” She slides slowly from your body, the sudden coolness very depressing, really, and you put on your short robe, a little wind and your speed taking care of it easily.

As you suspected, Miko-Kiku is cooking. The soup isn't miso, though; it seems to have a different different base, though there is miso in it. She notices you peeking in on her and her tail lashes in a would-be-threatening-if-it-didn't-look-so-cute manner. “No hugging, I'm busy, ecchi-dragon.” You're quizzical expression elicits an answer though. “Cep ohaw, from my home. Salmon soup. I added miso because you people are weird. Made some of our rice dumplings for Akari-san too.”

“You're wearing too many clothes under the apron,” you mention casually, before you make your way to the kotatsu where Yui and Akari are having tea. Yui pours you a cup and sets it down solemnly. You smile and run your hand through her metallic hair. “No issues?”

“Only one, aniki. You'll need to see it.” Akari is as straightforward as ever, but her smile seems permanently affixed today, even after you eye her suspiciously.

Yui's stomach growls and Akari smiles into her tea. “Gomen....”

“If you get hungry, eat. We have more supplies here than it looks like, because this place is meant to look uninhabited. Have Akari show you everything later.” Akari catches your look and you nod. “I want her as knowledgeable as you are. We're going to get her trained up.”

Yui-niji-chan grimaces. “That's going to be really hard with Kiki-sama. She didn't know what a youkai was.” Your surprise is very obvious, though you really kind of expected this. “We ran into a mukade-youkai during our escape.”

I like Kiki a lot more now and we haven't gotten her backstory yet.
