/tg/ - Traditional Games

It's eerie, watching the sky like this. The forest around you is silent, but the night sky above is lit with a hundred bright flashes of light, flickering in an out. It's enough to light the countryside around you with their brilliance, making it hard to look directly at those miniature suns. A million miles above you, the space battle for Reach rages on.

You lie on your back in a clearing in the pine forests, somewhere in Viery on Reach. Your three squadmates are nearby. Penny is sitting under the trees with Jacobson, talking about something, or maybe just sitting and watching the sky like you. "Above" you, also lying on her back is Erika Lund, the young woman you had only met earlier today and who was now part of your squad. She stares at the same sky you do.
"It's strange," she whispers, trying not to disturb the silence. "You can see the explosions, so far away, but you can't hear a thing. It's so surreal."
"One time, when I was a kid back on Earth," you begin. "There was a storm, high up in the atmosphere. Clouds just covered the sky from horizon to horizon, lit from within. Throughout those clouds you could see green lightning arcing through it all, but you couldn't hear a thing. Despite the constant, huge storm above you, there was no sound, no wind and no rain. The only feeling was the heaviness of the air; the heat and humidity of a summer storm."
You lie in silence for long minutes, watching the battle play out before you.
"Do you think we'll win?" Erika asks.
"The space battle?"
"No."
"The Battle of Reach, then?"
"No. I mean the war."
There's a long pause.

No way they can kill us all. UN probably has a plan to send a bunch of colony ships far away so our species survives.

"I think we have to, or else," you say after some thought.
"But what if we lose?" asks Erika. "What happens?"
"We can't lose," you reply. "But if we do, I don't think it'll be the end of humanity. The UN obviously has a back up plan, of sending colony ships far, far away from here or from the Covenant. Or they have something else cooked up."

A brighter flash above interrupts you. A near blinding ball of light erupts, then winks out a few seconds later.
"That was a nuke," Jacobson remarks from somewhere nearby.
"Anyway," you continue, "We can't afford to think about losing. We're grunts. Ours is not to wonder why; we just follow orders, and win this damned war. Even if I have to do it alone, I'll kill every single one of those Covenant bastards."
"That a promise?" asks Erika.
"You bet it is."

----

You restarted your long march to New Alexandria shortly afterwards. The four of you slog it through the pine forests of Viery, following overgrown game trails, and at one point a small creek.
"Hold up," says Penny. "According to SATNAV, we're getting close to a UNSC training outpost. You guys think it's worth checking it out?"
"We'll need any support we can get," says Jacobson. The two of them look at you.

>Check out the training outpost?

>>
>>33076359
>>Check out the training outpost?
Yes
>>
"Why not?" you ask with a shrug.
"Plenty of reasons why not," Jacobson replies.
"That was rhetorical."
"I know. But let's go, we're burning moonlight here."

You approach the base cautiously, ever wary for Covenant patrols. Chances are, the Covenant already know about this outpost, and will attempt to wipe it out at some point or another. Turns out that point was sooner rather than later, as you crest an embankment to find the scene of a massacre.
"Goddamn," Jacobson mutters.
The ground inside the perimeter is covered with half-melted plasma scoring, bullet holes, and blood, both human and alien. There are no signs of life anywhere, but there are corpses. Jacobson walks up to one of the corpses to inspect it.
"What do you think, sarge?" you say. "Sometime earlier today?"
"Hard to tell with all the plasma damage," he replies. "Whatever happened here, it's long over."
Penny shakes her head. "What a waste."
"Alright, may as well raid the place for supplies," says Jacobson. "They didn't burn the place to the ground, so we have some hope of finding something."

Further in to the base there's a large above ground structure, with what looks like a garage attached to it. Nearer by, a concrete bunker was embedded in the ground, with a large part of it blown out by plasma.

"We'll split up, cover more ground," Jacobson says. "Churchill, you take Lund with you. I'll take MacDaniel and cover the other structure."

You can look through either structure; Jacobson will investigate the other.

>>
"We'll take the bunker then," you tell Jacobson.
"Right, keep an ear out. We'll be within radio range, but don't use it until you absolutely need to."
"Roger that," you nod. "Meet up back here in fifteen?"
"See you soon."

You and Erika stand at the gaping hole made in the side of the bunker, looking into the darkness.
"You got night vision on your HMD?" you ask her.
"I don't even have a HMD," she replies. You look back at her and see that her helmet doesn't have an eyepiece.
"Right, I'll lead then," you say, turning on your VISR.

Your DMR isn't exactly ideal for close spaces, but at least the first corridor leading away from the fire bunker is a long one with no openings. If anyone was waiting at the other end, you could put some very accurate fire down on them.
"Can't see shit," Erika says.
"Don't worry, I can."
Erika stays right on you in the darkness, being unable to see anything herself. You get her to adopt pitch dark breaching procedure, and she keeps one hand on your shoulder throughout.

You get to the end of the corridor shortly. It branches left and right, and an open door is before you. The name plate above the door is scorched out, and there might be a body in the doorway, though you're not sure.

"This place is giving me the creeps," Erika says.

"Stay on me," you say to Erika as you move into the corridor. You check left and right in the corridor before you move across it. Clear down both sides. Then you cross the open space into the room.
"Watch your step," you say to Erika, stepping over the body of a marine.
You enter what seems to be the remains of an armoury.
"Guh, what's that smell?" she asks.
You don't smell anything, but it's probably been filtered by your helmet. In a corner, you see a blue glow, and a pair of large, pointed shapes on the ground.
"Dead grunts," you say. "We're in what looks like an armoury. We might be able to find ammo."
"I can't, when it's this dark. Doesn't your helmet have a flashlight?"
"Not mine, no."
"Dammit. I'll stay here and listen, then. You check everything out."

You leave Erika by the door, and take a look around the armoury. There's plenty of ammo for both you and Erika. You find assault rifles in abundance, and a few more DMRs. There's even a rack devoted to pistols and SMGs. At the back, you can see the bulky silhouette of a rocket launcher. But then, something catches your eye. You don't believe it. You can't believe it. This is an army base, and yet right there in front of you was the beautiful silhouette of a BR55 Battle Rifle.

>You can grab any of these weapons; one on your back, a pistol or SMG on the thigh, and then a weapon in the hand, although the more weapons you grab the less room you'll have for ammo. Erika doesn't have magnetic plates in her BDU to carry more guns.

You doubt you could have not taken the BR55 from its rack.you gather up the mags that were in a pouch next to its racks, replacing the magazines for your DMR. Written on the side of the BR are the words "My baby", "Squidslayer" and "Property of Jeff". The gun looks like it's seen some action, but at the same time, someone has been taking good care of it. If 'Jeff' never got a chance to pick up the gun in the battle for this outpost, you doubt he ever will. You'll have to take care of his gun now.

On your way out you grab the rocket launcher and a reload. Never know when you might need one. You also gather up some AR mags, and hand them to Erika once you get to the door way.
"Hear anything?" you ask her.
"Nothing at all. It's all quiet here."

"We're moving again," you tell Erika. She grabs your shoulder again, and the two of you head down the left fork of the corridor.
The corridor now is inset with doorways at regular intervals, leading to parts of the base unknown. You don't have time to investigate every room, and with the power out many of the doors are inoperable.

You're not halfway down the corridor when you hear something up ahead. There's an intersection ahead, and from somewhere up there you hear a clanking noise, then a grunt, then silence again.
"You hear that?" you whisper to Erika. She taps your shoulder once with a finger.
You curse internally; you hadn't set up a challenge with Jacobson and Penny.

"I'm going to call out," you whisper to Erika. She taps your shoulder twice. "I've made up my mind and I'm doing it." She grips your shoulder tighter, but doesn't say anything.
You take a breath, steeling yourself. "Sarge?" you call, not loudly but not too quietly either. The air seems to thicken, but no response comes.
"Sarge?" you ask again.
This time the darkness answers you with a very, very inhuman growl.
"Oh fuck."

You and Erika both ready your rifles, preparing for whatever is ahead of you. The darkness roars, and then something starts making heavy footsteps from around the corner. Somewhere deep in the tunnels, gunfire echoes. Human gunfire. It's soon answered by plasma fire.
And then whatever it is comes from around the corner, screaming bloody murder in its quest to rip you into little pieces. You don't see it, exactly, but your VISR system outlines and highlights something you're familiar with from your exploits on Fumirole.

"Active camo! He's invisible!" you say right before you open fire. Even if the elite was invisible to the naked eye, it was hard to miss in the narrow corridor. Erika opens up too, the combined noise of your rifles deafening in the small space. That's when you get your first glimpse of the monster. Illuminated by the yellow light of your muzzle flashes, the optical camouflage of the elite becomes confused and overloaded, rippling between the darkness and the light. You can see the Elite's eyes, and in its hand, an energy sword.

"I have an idea!" exclaims Erika.
"Erika, what-"
And then she turns on the underbarrel flashlight attachment mounted on all MA5 rifles. God damn it, why didn't you remember that earlier?
The elite is blinded, if only for a moment, and its active camouflage fails in the sudden contrast, and it stops nearly within striking distance. It flails its sword arm blindly, hoping to cut you in half with a lucky swing, but it misses, leaving itself open. Now's your chance.

With the elite wide open, you take your chance. You jump forward, grabbing onto the elite's arm and tackling him to the ground, making its shields sputter. The elite struggles, using its free arm to punch you in the back. The suit absorbs most of the blow, but the force still beats the hell out of you and winds you.
Pushing through the pain, you yell to Erika, "Kill it, kill the fucker!', but Erika is already a step ahead of you. She straddles the elite's chest and draws her combat knife, then drives it two-handed into the soft area on the underside of the elite's neck, breaking its shields.

The elite doesn't die, however, grabbing Erika and throwing her off. It drops its sword in an effort to grab you. You roll away from its grasping hands, getting some space between you. You look down the length of your body, and see the hulking alien leaning over, a blade of energy appearing from its wrist.

You roll further away from the elite, dodging its lunging arm as it tries to stab you. You scramble to your feet, realise you're unarmed, and see your weapons are behind the elite as well as its energy sword. The elite blocks your view as it stands up. It growls a challenge and then adopts a fighting stance, energy blades emerging from both its wrists.

It lunges at you again, and you duck under the blow. You kick it in the knee, collapsing it. The elite falls to the one knee, but then swings its arm out, striking you in the head and knocking you backwards. You manage to stay on your feet, but you're stunned for a moment, giving the elite enough time to stand up.

Your eyes clear of stars and you see the elite standing above you at full height. It seems to grin, ready to deliver the final blow. And then Erika jumps on it from behind.

Erika, while hanging around the elite's shoulders, manages to pull the knife out of the elite's neck as it tries to throw her off. She stabs the elite in the neck again, and then pulls it out for a third try, before the elite manages to throw her off.

As you watched, you grabbed your own combat knife with little thought put into the action. By the time the elite threw Erika off and was turning on her to finish it, you were already lunging. You stab the elite in the side, managing to put the knife between the plates of its armour. You pull the knife and do it again, this time in the elite's armpit. The elite screams in pain. It lashes out at you again, but you duck under the blow. Erika, out of nowhere, tackles the alien into the nearby wall and drives her knife into its neck one final time.

The elite slumps against the wall, gurgling. It reaches out towards you, as if to make a final blow of its own, but its arm drops as strength leaves its body. Erika steps up to the body and brutally rips her blade from the elite's neck, causing a spray of purple blood and ichor. It bends at the waist and slumps, lifeless.

"Good one," you say to Erika, before coughing as your injuries catch up you. You're still slightly winded, and you have a hell of a headache.
"You alright?" Erika asks, concerned.
"That was one hell of a fight," you tell her. "I'm not gonna drop dead, at least. More importantly," you continue, as you realise the sounds echoing through the corridors. "What the hell is that racket."
The sounds you hear are the firefight that began just before you got into a melee with the elite. The sounds of rifle fire and plasma have turned up to eleven now.

You give yourself a moment to recuperate, letting the headache subside a bit before continuing. After nearly a minute, you feel much better, and tell Erika "Let's go" before moving towards the sound of the firefight. As you go you adjust your comms unit, preparing to call Jacobson. While running, the firefight gets exponentially louder, with explosions from various alien and human grenades adding to the din.

"Hey sarge, is that you in a full-on fuck-off firefight that I hear?"
"Trooper? What did I say about emergencies? And no, we're not engaged, why?"
You share a glance with Erika. "Uh, that's not you throwing the grenades around down here?"
"Not at all. What's going on?"
"Sarge, I think you might need to get into the tunnels. We just engaged a stealth elite, and now we're heading towards a massive firefight. Follow the corridor down from the bunker, then take a left at the fork."
"Roger that trooper, we'll make our way down there."

"If that's not Sarge," says Erika as you jog down the corridors, "Who the fuck is it?"
The firefight was starting to become too loud to talk. "I don't know, Erika, but I think we're about to find out."
And then from ahead, plasma bolts came sailing through the intersection. There was another frag grenade explosion, followed by the cries of dying elites. You and Erika slow to a walk, and you prepare to call out a warning for friendly fire, when a dark shape darts out in front of you.
Three voices speak out at once, one male and two female.
"What the hell-"
"What the fuck-"
"ODSTs? Here?"
And then you catch a glimpse of a dull yellow visor on a head that is taller than your own.
"A spartan?!" Erika exclaims.
And then a pair of elites walk out from the corridor the Spartan had just come from.

Why would I turn it off? (i'm kinda new here)
>>33080569
A spartan, which is bigger than an average man, and around the proportions of an elite, can wield one extensively for long periods of time. The only time a normal human has been seen wielding one was during a scene in the RTS (which I won't spoil just in case someone plans to play the game.) and that was during a testosterone fueled rage, which lasted a total 8 seconds. Basically; without the augmented strength of a spartan that puts it on-par with an elite; without using two hands, a regular human probably couldn't use one extensively.
