"Load Armor Piercing." You call down to your loader, Roy. Your eyes glue themselves to the Commander's periscope- depending on how good their loader and gunner are, you've got 7-8 seconds before they fire again. You need to get as much information as possible and formulate a plan- You're pretty sure Erika's Long-88 can't penetrate Black Jack at this range, but you aren't interested in finding out.

You are Commander Russells of the M26E1 Pershing Heavy Tank "Black Jack" and as you watch the cloud of dust and smoke clear, you start to make out the first view of your opponent- She's facing you, partially angled around a corner with the angular turret pointed straight down the central boulevard- you can practically look down the barrel.

"AP Up." Roy calls. HVAP has a high muzzle velocity, but it's lower weight sapped its power and accuracy at long ranges. The Heavier Armor Piercing round would cut the air better, even with a lower muzzle velocity.

You feel the turret subtley shifting under you. "On Target?" You ask Rose.

"On target-" Rose says, her eerie calm seemingly disconnected from the fact that one of the most powerful anti-tank weapons of World War II is pointing itself directly at you. "Windage eight-south." She mutters. "Distance eighteen-hundred... Shot?"

"Fire." You say- Rose doesn't waste a second- the T54 90mm maingun roars as the heavy Armor-Piercing Capped, Ballistic Capped shell arcs out towards the Tiger II and impacts squarely against it's hull. "Hit! Jesus- You hit!" It takes a second for the surprise to register- a cold bore shot against a target over a mile away.

"Confirm kill?" Rose asks, voice still calm and disconnected. The temperature in the turret drops a degree or two.

"Confirming..." You watch as the smoke from the impact clears. "Negative- shattered on her glacis." To be fair, you weren't expecting a penetration at this range- but at least Erika knows you've got her number.

On the other hand, we hit but didn't penetrate. Maybe she'll take that as a sign of weakness.
>>
>>33076333

Yeah it could go either way. She could think it was either a lucky shot, or a worrying sign. I think Erika will assume the former, especially without any orders she's supposed to be following, or Maho, etc.
>>
>>33076333
Its Erika. in her mind, had the positions been reversed, we would be dead. people with Egos like her are easy to predict, if you know what stokes it. Lucky shot, cold bore, whatever; to her, we screwed up.

>>
How do we knock off her drive sprocket? Will the concussive force from an HE round do it, or do we actually have to hit the sprocket itself with a kinetic round?
>>
>>33076792
Not to sound like some glory seeker, but wouldn't that cheapen our victory? If we irreparably immobilized a tank with already complex and vulnerable motive systems? Erika may be inclined to brush off our victory if we achieved it that way. No matter, how good the rest of our attack and maneuvers were.

And I'd say kinetic rounds would have the best chance, but no matter which type of round Rose would need uncanny aim, or we would have to uncomfortably close the distance.
>>

Modifications in Australian tanking need to make sense in the context of "Are these modifications that the manufacturers would have come up with and used at the time?"

Whether it does or doesn't make sense according to that context is decided by an official board of tank people. Obviously this is more loose for prototypes than with existing vehicles.

Do you think such a modification would pass the board? I'm not so sure myself.
>>
>>33077367
Well they're not in this match. Although I do like my fast light tanks.

Through the periscope you see the Tiger aim and fire again. "Brace!" You call out, waiting for the round to impact, but her second shot goes low and wide- skipping off the pavement and into a building several yards in front of you. Time to egress before she manages to get on target. "Alright, Richard. Get us out of here."

"Got it!" Richard revs the Ford GAF up and reverses a few feet- He'd had the forethought to start the engine when the first round had streaked over. He then turns the big Pershing and neatly turns the tank and rolls it down the side street.

Alright, it wasn't the decisive first encounter you were hoping for, but with a bit of luck that first shot had taught Erika to respect your gunner's aim. And you're still alive and mobile. That's always a plus!

Kuromuromine strategy demands aggression, and Erika was aggressive even by their standards. You've already bounced a shell off her frontal armor- range be damned, she's going to think you've got the usual American pea-shooter. She's going to assume you've panicked because your gun, by far the strongest advantage you've got, has only managed to scratch her front plate.

All this information comes together at once. "Alright, Richard. We're going to flank around- I need you to head Northwest- lots of detours, lots of side-streets, lots of turns and twists." You say, looking at the map. "In fact, stay off the main streets completely- we need to make sure she doesn't see us."

The longer she thinks you're hiding, the more surprised she'll be when you outflank her.

You make a good pace through the city- well a good pace for a heavy tank, anyway. Richard drives expertly- managing to fit Black Jack through sidestreets and alleys that you would've never dared. There is one thing that slows you down though- you make sure to stop every few minutes and listen- you can still hear the Tiger II's tracks.

She's making her way aggressively, but carefully up that main boulevard- she still hasn't caught on to just how loud her tank is, and just how quiet yours is in comparison. Sometimes it's the small advantages that give you everything you need- in this case rubberized tracks are keeping you off her radar, allowing you to stalk her silently.

By tank, standards anyway.

A couple of stops later, you judge that she's finally passed your position.

Nah, not this one.

We don't want to alert Erika of our presence. We are trying to mask our movements as much as possible while simultaneously gathering even more precise information on enemy movement.
>>
>>33079758
Normally I'd suggest this, since you physically cannot fight a tank battle buttoned up, but Erika is aiming to hit us (as in the person) with the 88.

BJ, care to confirm?
>>33079925

>>
>>33079925
See: last thread. The shot would've hit us if we weren't buttoned down.

If the boulevard isn't wide enough to swing the 88 around, what we should do is load HVAP, crash through the buildings and go in front of her.

To Erika, we've already demonstrated our gun can't penetrate the front of her tank, so she'll have the turret aimed to the back to cover that sector. But HVAP can go through all parts of a KT at <100 yards.
>>
>>33079880
Well, based on this post...

>A couple of stops later, you judge that she's finally passed your position.

It's unlikely that her tank's turret would be facing anywhere but forward at this point in time.
And we can still try to listen to her movements from behind an obstruction. It's just easier to do that unbuttoned than inside the tank buffering up the acoustics.

>Is the main boulevard wide enough to swing the 88 around?
Regardless of the area, the traverse speed (180°) takes between 10-30 secs. 5 seconds on max, but I doubt she's running the engine full throttle.

>>33080028

"Alright, Richard..." You say, ducking back into the tank and buttoning up the commander's hatch. "Cut South again... Let's see if she took the bait." Richard dutifully turns the tank left at the next intersection and begins moving back towards the main boulevard.

"Careful..." You warn, opening the hatch as you come to the corner. "Slow- I don't want to blunder right into them..." You say carefully as you pop your head and shoulders out of the turret- You don't hear her tracks and, as the turret rounds the corner, you see why.

Less than a hundred feet down the road you see the Tiger II stopped at an intersection, angled into it with her gun pointing north- Erika sitting up outside the hatch- the gun is pointed down a side road. Evidently she'd decided to try to ambush you, but had gone a few streets too far.

For a second, you both stare at each other and you swear that you both blink at once. Then in unision you drop into your respective turrets. "Stop the tank! TARGET DIRECT LEFT! Thirty yards!" You say as you take the turret controls and begin bringing it around. "Roy- Load the shell!"

"What she- OH!" He says, before reaching into the ready-rack. "Got it!" He says as he turns and rams the shell home. "This one's for you. HVAP UP!" The shell really isn't anything special, except that it's addressed directly to Erika.

"On target!" You call, "Turret is yours, Rose."

There isn't a lot that has to be done- this is practically point-blank range for tank combat.

"Firing." Rose says calmly.
