Welcome to Academy City. The time is evening, the weather is pleasant, and the date is August 24.

You are Kyril Torikov, ‘Level 2’Telekinetic Child Error and you just received another speeding ticket. It was significantly more expensive than your first one. Then again you weren’t speeding on the highway in a Bugatti Veyron the first time. It was also because you didn’t have a license. Thankfully Nakazawa also had you covered. He was going to put that under ‘testing’ in the expenses.

Still, you were helping him out for the Academy City Research Exhibition Assembly, and driving over a Bugatti with a VI to the venue was only part of your job. There was still more things to move and the booth to set up. Kyousuke had been pasting flyers about the district but he honestly felt he could use some help after today. Sagara had reported no abnormalities within the display space allocated for Nakazawa’s Bugatti sponsored project. That was probably going to change within the next few days as more and more displays were set up. Tadakuni for his part had managed to acquire a list of projects that were sure to win the competition’s Best Project Award. In other words, it was a list of targets you’d have to go through to push Nakazawa’s team to victory.

While you were glad you had something to do, and for money no less, you had other concerns as well. First of all, since it was late, you’d have to pick up Last Order, whom you had left in Asuka’s care earlier today. Secondly, you also got a letter from Teacher which may seem normal to most people but really there was a hidden message that only you and those related to magic could perceive. You’d rather be alone for that. Finally there was the data that Toulour had delivered on STUDY Corporation and that promised to be a whole new mess. Tonight was looking busy.

Everyone sort of just dispersed after the day’s events were done. You made your way back home. Now you had some time to yourself, which you suspected was going to be rarer and rarer. You were going to take this opportunity to talk to Teacher, or whatever passed for him in that letter of his.

“Hey kid, looks like it’s just you and me now,” the green materialisation of mana greeted you.

“So what’s the deal with the letter?”

“Honestly, I thought they’d screen snail mail much more rigorously,” he said, “Just because I can’t enter the city doesn’t mean I can’t write to you.”

“And you want me to go to Sweden,” you pointed.

“I’m just telling you where I was going to be ahead of time. As much as love for you to join me over here, I believe school will be starting in September so I will understand if you choose not visit.”

“So that’s it?”

“Well no. This letter here is my way of paying you back and while nothing really beats teaching you in person, this is the best I can do for now.”

“So you’re teaching me how to fight?”

“Isn’t that what you wanted?” he almost seemed confused.

“Right, so was there anything else?”

“I didn’t know you had a kid,” the image scratched his chin, “I take it she’s a, uh, a youthful indiscretion?”

“Not really, it’s complicated,” you were reminded of Last Order, “She’s my little sister, and I’m probably going to have to go pick her up.”

“A responsible older brother,” he mused, “Very well, I can respect that, my student.”

“Can’t we just do that on the move?” you ask.

“Certainly, you wish to learn how to get from one point to the next in the fastest time possible correct?” you nodded, “Then I am sufficiently acquainted with free running that I should be able to help you.”

“Great,” you grabbed the letter from the table.

“Take care not to fold the letter though, it disrupts the spell,” he warned.

With a nod, you were out the window and in to the cooling night. Last Order and Asuka were in another district altogether, which you were informed through email. Thus you took to the alleys and the side roads that traffic rarely passed. There were obstacles in your way of course but Teacher was ever helpful.

“Jump,” he instructed.

You did so, clearing a stack of pallets without breaking stride.

“It is good you show little hesitation,” he commented, “Might want to climb that.”

And so it went. You climbed, jumped, shimmied and moved as Teacher directed. Good time was being made and the further you went the less Teacher had to say as you started to make your own judgements in the midst of your running. The final obstacle, if you wanted to call it that was an alley blocked by a chain link fence, a dumpster and a stack of crates. The crates themselves were in front of the fence so you could get a good hold. Climbing the loosely stacked boxes seemed iffy. The dumpster could make a good springboard but you wouldn’t make the jump unassisted. Or you could just go around it.

“I suggest you go around,” the image of Teacher spoke this time.

You folded him and stuffed him in your pocket before leaping once on to the dumpster and launching yourself up in to the air. While on approach you had done the calculations in your head. With the right about of force pushing you in the right direction you should, theoretically, have been able to make the jump. You weren’t wrong. The stack of crates and the fence was cleared with plenty of room to spare and you realised that you were a bit higher than you should have been. It wasn’t a problem as you slowed your fall down easily and much more instinctively than you did with your jump. No problem. You took a moment to catch your breath and settle down from the minor pinpricks of exertion.

Asuka and Last Order were in the josePH’s, along with two other Ladies of Tokiwadai that you recognised. Wannai Kinuho and Awatsuki Maaya, the two girls from that time you cleaned the pool. It seems that they have decided to lend a hand.

“Good evening dear, how was work today?” she rose up to greet you.

You gave her a little kiss before sitting down.

“Oh you know, same old song and dance,” you replied, “I may have angered my homeroom teacher by accident.”

“Then I suppose your day was much more eventful than mine,” Asuka concluded, “Wannai and Awatsuki have been very helpful for first year students. I dare say that I feel confident about victory.”

“Onii-san, onii-san, your girlfriend Kudou-sama is smart, says Misaka says Misaka as she exclaims again in surprise.”

“They are Ladies of Tokiwadai,” you replied, “How was your day?”

“Yes I imagine that we would be smarter than your average bear,” Asuka added.

“Misaka went shopping, then Kudou-sama taught me how to use a sword, then Wannai-nee-san and Awatsuki-nee-san came to play and then,” she kept rattling off a list of things excitedly.

You listened intently but really you just wanted to,

I'm not sure about this, she learns things from the Misaka network but I don't believe they can learn things from her, because the entire point of a command unit is to control the others. Also it's probably quite likely that they were already given knowledge on sword fighting techniques from Testament anyway, and probably decided it was worthless against Accel.

>>33068904
Well Misaka is. I assume because the Queen manipulates the electrical signals in the brain or some other half-assed explanation and that she can't control electromasters.
>>
>>33069032

I think the clones automatically learn things from Last Order. For example in episode 17 of Index II (or I think it was that) she explained to Misaka 10032 how she locked herself out and Misaka 10032 responded that it was not necessary to tell her, since it had been broadcasted through the network already.

You weren’t exactly in a hurry to go home just yet. Curfew was still a good ways away, so why not grab some dinner while you relaxed?

“Wait, back up, you taught her how to use a sword?” you asked Asuka.

“Yes, for a given definition of ‘taught,’ of course,” Asuka replied calmly, “It amazed me to know that your little sister did not know how the sharp, pointed, business end of a sword worked. Thus I demonstrated on a passing group of thugs.”

“Misaka thinks a gun is still more efficient, says Misaka says Misaka as she states the truth.”

“True but that is because I wished not to harm them too much,” Asuka continued pointedly, “They had to be able to vacate the premises under their own power. That they would do so in their undergarments is none of my concern. Coincidentally that is also how I found some reliable hands for my project.”

As Asuka sipped her tea you raised your eyebrows at the two girls sitting timidly across the table. They smiled back awkwardly. Coincidentally Last Order found a seat on your lap.

“I am sure you will agree with me that The Dean was the best option given that situation,” Asuka spoke again.

“Everyone plays to their strengths,” you shrugged, “So what’s your project exactly?”

Asuka simply gestured to her two subordinates.

“Kudou-sama’s project is about the metallurgy behind her sword,” Wannai started off, “She was intrigued to notice that blood rarely clung to it and that it was almost always sharp. If the age of her sword is to be believed then there should be signs of it along the blade, yet there are practically none.”

“Thus the most logical conclusion that Kudou-sama could draw was nanomachines,” Awatsuki concluded, “She concluded that there must be something that is absorbing the blood and repairing the blade. How a sword of its age is able to do so remains under investigation. But if its secrets were to be unlocked we would be able replicate this elsewhere.”

[1/2]
>>
>>33069648
You kept the fact that magic may be involved to yourself. The Dean glowed red as usual.

“So what are your plans then? Just set up a stall and present your project?” you asked.

“Nothing that complicated dear,” Asuka answered, “I told you I submitted a paper, I will simply present my findings to a panel and await their judgement. Unlike your friend Nakazawa, it is not quite open to subterfuge but conversely will do little to sway opinions from initial impressions. I hear the competition is particularly fierce this year.”

“It probably is if I’m involved,” you remarked.

“Quite,” she agreed.

As for dinner, you settled for a small hamburger with some thick cut potatoes and a cherry pie with whipped cream for dessert. The girls already ate but it didn’t stop you from chatting while you ate. Though initially they seemed intimidated by your presence, or at least outside their comfort zone, they warmed up. It was probably because of your open relationship with Asuka. You had to admit you often forgot that she was The Dictator and likely the third most fearsome within the halls of Tokiwadai.

You escorted them back to the Outer Dormitories before you turned back towards your own. Of course you were past curfew by the time you arrived but it wasn’t like you had a dorm supervisor to sneak past or anything. A bath later and you were contemplating your abilities as you settled in for some reading.

The time is morning, the weather is fine, and the date is now August 25.

Last Order clung rather hard to your shirt this morning but you managed to substitute a pillow instead. Maybe you should get her a stuffed animal at some point you thought. As you were preparing to report to Nakazawa, you recalled that today was Kaoru’s birthday party. Thankfully, you had bought her birthday present already. It said that it was going to last the majority of the whole day, starting slightly before lunch and ending before the evening, you were pretty sure you didn’t have to arrive or remain there until the set time so long as you did show up.

While Kaoru already knew about Last Order you were pretty sure that Shirai was on the guest list. Speaking of which, she probably had a pretty long guest list if her social circle was any indication. You might have to call Nakazawa and tell the lads were busy today and decide on when you’d attend.

Last Order was still asleep by the time breakfast was finished. If you let her sleep in you could get some fitness done with Teacher. Other than that you also had to consider contacting Toshino for babysitting duty. Then there were the notes that Toulour had delivered and that you didn’t have time to go through just yet.

You settled for a light workout instead. There was no need to ask Teacher just yet and the day has just begun. You did get far though, Last Order woke up just as you were about to start. As she cleaned up you grumbled a bit that she picked the worst time to wake up. You already had breakfast so instead you settled for some tea as Last Order enjoyed a bowl of fried rice you prepared from yesterday’s leftovers. Whilst she ate, messily at that, you hid behind a sheet of reports on STUDY Corporation.

It was a photocopy of a report from about four days ago. You could tell since there were comments and other such morsels in the scrawled in the margins. At least they were funny. It seemed that STUDY Corporation was owned by a certain Aritomi Haruki. The comment mentioned that it was actually run like a democracy, with a council that voted on decisions and outsourced the actual execution. Aritomi was also coincidentally the winner of the ACRE Assembly for the past two years. His projects aside, he did seem to espouse the plight of those who did not possess Abilities. This was bullshit according to the comments. The author of this particular annotation posited that he was, “jelly as mad fuck.” Taking their history and what you knew of them in to account, it looked like they were gearing up for something. The parts they purchased went in the production of powered suits. Surely Anti-Skill didn’t have the budget to purchase all those suits at once, let alone have trained operators to use them.

It was also interesting to note that they were competitors with the Level 6 Shift Project, having submitted a proposal for the creation of artificial Ability Users. They called the product a Chemicaloid, an artificial human. Further information wasn’t available. You suspected you may have to actually break the law to find out more. Oh Nunotaba was also under their employ.

[1/2]
>>
>>33071246
STUDY had ties with plenty of other organisations as well, Anti-Skill being the most prominent. Another company, Orbit Portal, was a close partner. You recalled that STUDY had put something on the Endymion, which Orbit Portal was building, but had no idea if that was relevant. The comment, which was signed by Toulour, mentioned a bounty to find out what it was. He also planned to steal the space elevator in question but you’re not sure if he was actually serious or not.

You couldn’t see where or how they may be involved with killing your boss just yet but it opened up more leads. Orbit Portal used to be in aerospace, and now they were building the Endymion. Maybe there was a connection there. Regardless that was enough reading for the day, you think. Now it was time to,

Tossing the papers in to a pile on your desk, you put away the plates and informed Last Order that it was time to attend a party. Her question on what exactly kind of agenda you were pushing was met with the following reply,

“Fun.”

You headed out to Kaoru’s place though it looked likes you were early. Toshino was still decorating. However it was the think smell of spice in the air that attracted you to the kitchen, where Kaoru was flitting from pot to pot. She was cooking up a storm.

“Ah, good morning Torikov-san,” she greeted.

“Happy Birthday to you,” you replied, “Am I too early?”

“Not at all,” she gave you a hug.

That was a first.

“And hello to you as well little Misaka,” she hugged Last Order too.

Last Order returned her hug much more enthusiastically than your confused reflex.

“The others shall be running a bit late,” Kaoru continued, “They shall be bringing cake, and more friends.”

“Who else did you invite?”

“My colleagues for one and my friends,” she listed, “This includes yourself, Kudou-san, Kamijou-san and even the Index Librorum Prohibitorum. However I believe Kamijou-san will be unable to attend due to his injuries and the Index has declined my invitation.”

“You’re the only guy here,” Toshino added needlessly, “I think you’re going to have to beat them off with a stick.”

“I doubt it,” Asuka’s voice preceded her entrance, “They would have to go through me first.”

“Good morning Kudou-san,” she gave your girlfriend a hug.

“I come bearing gifts,” Asuka handed her an elongated package, “Take this with you, may it serve you well.”

Kaoru’s eyes widen at it. She was certainly more emotive today. From Asuka, you were informed that Sparky, Shirai, Saten and Uiharu had yet to arrive. Which meant you could ambush them when they arrived. Or you could be a good guest and help Kaoru with the cooking or Toshino with the decorations.

Here was another chance to mess with Shirai. It was something you could not possibly resist.

“So Kaoru, you don’t happen to have any sheets you’re not using are you?” you asked innocently enough.

“There should be some in the washroom, may I ask what you intend to do with them?” she replied.

“Making a costume,” you dragged Last Order with you, “Right, we shall now commence mission Spook Shirai.”

“What is our objective? Asks Misaka asks Misaka as she questions onii-san’s intentions.”

“Have you ever wished you could fly?”

“Misaka does not have proper parameters for flight, says Misaka says Misaka as she points out the flaw in onii-san’s logic.”

You lifted her telekinetically. She almost shrieked in surprise again.

“Well now you can,” you grabbed some sheets, “Ever heard of ghosts before?”

“Ghosts don’t exist, says Misaka says Misaka as she expects onii-san to refute her argument again.”

“Well they don’t, but that doesn’t mean we can’t pretend right?”

“Misaka does not follow, says Misaka says Misaka as she voices her confusion.”

You threw a white bed sheet on top of her. Her subsequent panicked thrashing made for a rather convincing spectre you thought. When she finally emerged from underneath it she was glaring at you.

“You were a pretty good ghost,” you chuckled slightly to yourself, “This will scare the pants off Shirai.”

“Onii-san thinks so? Asks Misaka asks Misaka as she seeks confirmation.”

“Very.”

Of course, Sparky and Shirai arrived an hour later. You spent that time trying to acquire the recipe for whatever Kaoru was cooking. Of course when they did arrive you made for the door.

“I’ll get it,” you volunteered innocently.

Last Order followed you with a pair of sheets trailing her. Asuka sipped tea with a smile at the table. You opened the door for Shirai and Sparky, looking confused as you did so.

“Did you get the wrong room?” you started.

“Somehow I doubt that you boor,” Shirai’s response was cut off.

You had levitated Last Order out of the corner of your eye and she floated over to your shoulder. That her wild ghostly gesticulation messed with your levitation only added to the effect. Shirai and Sparky paled, at least, until Last Order opened her mouth.

“Boo, says Misaka says Misaka as she emulates a ghost’s sound.”

A grin grew on your face until you couldn’t stop yourself from laughing as Last Order tried to act spooky and failed. Shirai took a moment to compose herself and hurried inside in huff. You floated Last Order after her. Sparky punched your arm lightly with one of her exasperated smiles before entering as well. More laughter erupted from inside the room, and Shirai was looking even more annoyed. Even after she had teleported the sheet off, Toshino, Asuka and Kaoru were having a right laugh at her expense.

Of course you couldn’t laugh at her forever. Instead you moved on to,

It doesn’t take long for Saten, Uiharu, and surprisingly enough Yomikawa-sensei. She gave you a suspicious look but otherwise didn’t question your presence too much. While it was bit earlier you all decided to shower Kaoru in presents while you could. There was much oohing and aahing at the presents she was handed. In the interests of fairness, she opened them up at random.

Sparky got her a new hairpin that had the image of a flame. Shirai had gotten her some scandalous undergarments. You were not privy to what they looked like. Nor were you privy to the size of her bust (non-existent) and other measurements of interest. Saten and Uiharu had both chipped in to get her a music player. Apparently Kaoru needed music to kick ass to. You were pretty sure Saten’s selection of Meigo Arisa’s hits weren’t conductive to that. Your necklace seemed to please Kaoru just as well though, so that was a weight off of your chest. The last two, Yomikawa and Asuka, had unusually militant gifts. Yomikawa gave her a shield that Anti-Skill used. It held a bit of sentimental value for Kaoru, whose appellation of your homeroom teacher made her feel old. You’d chuckle but then Yomikawa-sensei would make you regret. Asuka’s khanda (sword) was much more impressive, you thought. It held a sharpened edge and was relatively unadorned. You supposed it was meant to be practical.

Still you don’t think you’ve ever seen Kaoru smile so much before. After that was lunch. The prepared food was the kind that Kaoru often had back in her home country. She admitted that it was certainly much cleaner though. While you were eating you received two messages, one from Nunotaba and one from Nakazawa. It wasn’t an emergency but both were clamouring for your time.

You were determined to stay for cake at least. There was no way you were going to suffer all that spice without something sweet to take off the edge. Once you had that delicious, moist cake then you were out the door. It was bad enough that Yomikawa was in attendance. Just sitting next to each other was rather awkward but Kaoru didn’t mind. If the birthday girl didn’t mind then you weren’t going to make an issue out of it.

“You know I almost thought you’d never smile,” you remarked as Kaoru handed you a piece of cake.

“I take very few breaks,” she admitted, “So you could say that I am less guarded today.”

You supposed that made sense.

“Well I hope you don’t mind if I leave Last Order with you for a bit,” you said.

“I do not though,” she replied, “I suppose you had to take time out of your considerably busy schedule.”

“Not really, but I’d free up my schedule even if I was.”

“Then I appreciate it,” she gave you one final hug.

Outside you hurriedly messaged Nakazawa to assure him that no, you were not dead, and yes you would be working with him in the afternoon. Nunotaba however was calling a favour you owed her so you called her up as you walked.

“おはいよう, Torikov, I hope you are free.”

“Not really, I’m helping a friend for the Academy City Research Exhibition Assembly,” you answered, “Still if I couldn’t help then you wouldn’t have called me anyway.”

“そう, let me be brief, I need you to steal something from STUDY Corporation for me.”

“I thought you were working for them.”

“ほうううううう, you’ve done your research, I’m impressed. しかし, that doesn’t change the fact that I need you for this job.”

“Right, what do you want stolen?”

“Their Chemicaloid.”

“Their artificial Ability User huh?” you remembered mentions of that, “Sounds fun, I’ll see if I can find time in my schedule for that. I can take my time right?”

“いいえ, the sooner you get this done the better,” Nunotaba said, “They have something planned for the ACRE but that’s all I can tell you for now.”

She hung up. You sighed. Here you were hoping the rest of the month would be smooth sailing. Checking your calendar, you noted that the ACRE Assembly awards were being handed out on the 30th. That meant you had four days to tip the votes of the judges. You also had four days to steal STUDY Corporation’s Chemicaloid before shit went down. Well, at least it couldn’t much worse.

War photography was a very rewarding profession, or so you liked to tell your niece. Honestly you had no idea how you managed to deceive her all these years. You didn’t think she’d take to the truth as well as your brother-in-law. He was a committed pacifist, and you pretended to be Golgo 13. The problem with sniping a target in a busy street in Hong Kong was the damnable lack of clear sight lines. Hong Kong’s streets were lined with signs and billboards that advertised this or that. You couldn’t just shoot up random civilians here. Even if Hong Kong had its dark side, it was well hidden. The street was crowded but you had worse conditions to work with before.

The subject that you were going inhume today was a pretty lady with long white hair. Her physical appearance stood out amongst the crowd of smaller black-haired Asians around her. She was exceptionally pale as well but you knew that was just a side effect of her magic. It wasn’t helped that your target was being escorted by a similarly white shorthaired lady with a tan. She wore a red vest and openly carried a pistol. It was a very conspicuous yellow Beretta Px4. There was only one person in the business that carried something so recognisable.

Still, her bodyguard didn’t matter one bit as you continued breathing evenly. They were navigating as quickly as they could. Your rifle wasn’t your only weapon however, but the last time you tried it, your target had opted to retreat. It was natural, since Anubis would have fed on her blood and her very magic itself. You are Fujimoto Shiro and you were hunting the Witch of Karelia.

Breathe in. You had her range. Breathe out. She was going to hit a clearing eventually. Breathe in. Just one moment longer. Breathe out. The shot was lined up. You held your breath and squeezed.

Breathe in. It struck her squarely in the kidneys. Normally it would have been enough. It was the kind of wound that would induce shock and an unpleasant death. Not so for the Witch of Karelia. The civilians had already started running by the time she was getting up. The blood you spilt had pooled around her, coalescing in to globules that took the form of weapons. Spears, swords, bloody stakes, they all took aim at you. The Witch had you in her sights. Just as well. Your sister, Kudou Junko, was going to take care of her bodyguard. This battle was between just the two of you.

She fired off her retaliation. It was fast. Enough that by the time you moved away from the scope your rifle had been ruined by her bloody projectiles. As well versed as she was in counter-sniper tactics, the projectiles were limited by the amount of blood an average human had. She wasn’t average but you had been hounding her for the past month. You were going to wear her down eventually.

She at least had the sense to take cover as you sprayed the street with your machine pistol. You lost sight of her but knowing her she was most likely going to try end you once for all. If only that worked the first time you wouldn’t be in Hong Kong. It started to rain.

You never fought head on unless you could. Each and every encounter you had stacked as many advantages as possible. You needed it. It was why you would stoop so low as to use science and technology on the job. Without boasting, it was the reason you were one of the best freelance magical troubleshooters out there today. Heh, troubleshooter, how apt, you thought as you mined the different approaches to your position. Checking your mags again, you should have enough to tear the Witch a new one. Your rifle was expensive and fixing it was going to require travelling to Germany. She was going to waste your time. Just as well that you would end her here then. No hard feelings.

She was taking her time though as you crouched down behind some cover on the roof tops. There was more screaming, distant gun fire and you thing manic laughter. Junko really needed to calm down you thought. Only a bit longer and you heard your traps going off. Just as planned you popped out to finish her off when you felt impacts along your chest. It wasn’t loud but you could make out the clicking of an automatic gun mechanism. Your eyes captured the sight of the meat shield she had used to come out relatively unscathed. In her hands was a Stechkin APB. It wouldn’t defeat your body armour but it didn’t look like she had any more ammo.

Silently stuffing it away, she then drained her meat shield of blood. Once more she readied her bloody projectiles. Your hand moved towards your sword.

She can just keep grabbing people. Don't go needlessly raising the body count.
>>
One way or another she was going down. She couldn’t hold against the might of Anubis. The God of Death ended all life. Her life was in her magic. It was literally in her blood. That was why she grimaced as you hefted the blade. There shouldn’t be that many other warm bodies left anyway. Not after Junko had started a running gun fight around the city block.

“Asura004, Restore the balance between the Weak and the Strong.”

“Such a gentleman,” her voice was hoarse, “I suppose I must put in an equal amount of effort.”

The blood dropped to the ground with a sickening splat. It didn’t just drop down, it seeped through the cracks. Travelling downwards in search of victims, in search of more blood to fuel her magicks, she was right. It would level the playing field for a moment but you were the only one who had the power to outlast the other.

“Theotokos072, I offer the world to my son,” she spoke unnecessarily.

It was amazing what kinds of things were done in the name of love. But you weren’t here to listen to her sob story. After all, it didn’t change the fact that she was standing opposite you. All that mattered was that you were here, Anubis was in hand and the woman named Ilyena Torikov had to die.

Interlude End.
