You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

After cancelling your swordery lessons with Arnaud, you stopped by Niklaus's study to pay him a visit and maybe tell him that your sword's doing just fine.

That was the plan, anyways. In the end, you just ended up pissing Karel off and making her cry.

But hey, now you're kind of maybe closer friends than before! You hope!

>Congratulations, you are now a timid LLAMA!
>Llamas are strong and hardy... but also rather skittish.
>The Princess considers you to be her friend!
>But while llamas may be majestic, they still don't count as people.

>"You look like you're out of breath... let me guess, you overslept and then ran as fast as you could to get here before me,"

>Great. You haven't even said anything yet and the maids are already giggling at you.

"Hey, you know me," you say, shrugging. "My day feels incomplete if I don't talk to half the castle before breakfast."
"Ah, so -that's- what you do every day before coming down here," Marianne sighs. "And here I was thinking that you were drawing embarrassing pictures of swords or the like."
"No, that's only on my days off," you reply, a smile on your face.

With the maids in full giggling mode and Marianne with her usual inscrutable expression on her face, you follow them into the dining hall and take your seat.

Could it be any more obvious that Adrian is actually the kings older brother Roul? And that the reason all of Luci's unmarried siblings are being targeted is because someone found out Roul had a kid. But they don't know if it's a boy or a girl.

They're afraid Karel and Elmo will marry and unite the two kingdoms.
>>
>>32991902
Then why would they attack Luci first?
>>
>>32991779
Yeah your right
Im just glad we never ended up in a situation where we had to chose either Mari or Rana.

Id explode from indecisiveness

Im kinda lying though Dragon-grills for life
>>
>>32991902

That's an idea, though that would make them pretty organized to organize something like that in the few days Karel's been a bodyguard.

Honestly I don't see any satisfying explanation for now.
>>
>>32991902
>Elmo
This made me laugh far harder than is justifiable.

>>32991936
Because she's the oldest (aside from Pelligrino, who has made it clear by running that he wouldn't be tolerant of a political marriage), and thus is the closest to being of marriageable age.

If that's the reasoning for the attack, I don't know why they'd have to move immediately when they heard a rumor that she was going to be offered to Monique. Since Monique would obviously not be Raoul's child, I'd think that'd be as good a reason as any to just go "Ok, that's one down" and move on to the rest of them.

That, and Marianne would still be the one in line to inherit (after age of majority, at least) even if Raoul had infinity children because Thierri is the king. At least I'm pretty sure that's how the inheritance stuff worked. I know Arch discussed it a while back, but don't feel like digging.
>>
"So, Marianne..." you turn to the Princess. "What's the itinerary for today?"
"The usual," Marianne replies. "After breakfast is one of Sir Gregory's lectures, then literature and finally your favorite."
"Ballroom dancing?" you ask.
"Etiquette," she says, rolling her eyes.

Looks like she's not really feeling your jokes today.

"I requested that my classes finish early so that you won't be late for your big dinner party," Marianne says.
"Huh?" you stare at her for a moments, unsure as to how to react. "You're serious?"
"While I'm not going, I do understand how much you enjoy food, she sighs. "And Ariane is the best chef I know... not to mention that Luciana is sure to be looking forward to it."

It's REALLY surprising that she's going out of her way like this for you.

Have we ever hugged her?

>>32992081

Those are other good arguments against that theory.

>Have we ever hugged her?
That seems like a bad idea.
>>
>>32992222
What could possibly go wrong?
>>
>>32992125

"Well, uh..." you mumble. "...thanks, Marianne."
"It's not like I don't benefit from this myself, so don't think that I'm sacrificing anything to help you out," Marianne replies. "I enjoy that etiquette class about as much as you do. Actually less, now that I think about it... I -am- expected to memorize every single one of those arbitrary rules, after all."

Yeah, you only need to know enough to keep from looking like a complete uncultured fool.

"Oh-" Marianne snaps her fingers. "I might as well tell you now..."
"Hm?"
"I'm taking off tomorrow. No classes."
"What for?" you ask. "We're going to be going into town again?"

You definitely wouldn't complain if that was indeed the case...

"I haven't decided yet," Marianne replies, "maybe we'll go into town, maybe I'll just stay in my room all day and read. But I felt like taking a break from... everything, so that's what I'm going to do. Besides, Father is always nagging me about taking the time to actually enjoy myself."
"Yeah, that does sound like the kind of thing that he'd say," you laugh.

"You thinking about visiting the Wilhelms and their baby if you go into town tomorrow?" you ask.
"Maybe," Marianne replies. "Though I'm sure that you're thinking of some way for us to end up visiting your sister's place as well..."
"Hey, it's not like I'd be complaining if you decided that that's what you wanted to do," you say, shrugging.

She knows you way too well.

"You tease me about it, but it's not like you wouldn't enjoy talking about baby stuff with her," you say before chomping into a croissant.
"The fun part is when the baby's actually born," Marianne says, pointing her fork at you.

You're pretty sure that's considered "bad manners."

"From experience, I've found that pregnant women can be quite... -taxing- to be around for prolonged periods of time," Marianne sighs. "Your sister seems to be more on the upbeat end of things, but there's no telling how she'll start acting as the pregnancy progresses."
"I understand what you're getting at, but I doubt Citrine'll get that bad," you reply.

You're no stranger to crazy pregnant women, but Citrine's sure to be better than that... right?

With nagging worries in the back of your mind about your sweet loveable sister turning into some kind of horrible monster woman, you anxiously CONSUME the rest of your croissants.

Flaky and buttery and slightly sweet... but you're more focused on the act of eating than the enjoyment of the food that you're shoving into your mouth.

That's probably bad manners too, but who cares.

Once you're both don eating, you and Marianne get up from the table and head out towards her first class...

"Good morning, Sir Gregory," you say.
"Hm?" Sir Gregory looks up from the paper. "Oh. Her, Reinhold."
"Reading an important letter?"
"It's nothing vital, just a letter from Lisette saying that she's doing alright in Krassato with Chiara and Giancarlo."
"Oh. That's good to hear."
"Yeah," he nods. "Guess I ought to tell Luciana when I get home..."

Sir Gregory folds up the letter and puts it in his pocket before turning back to you.

"Oh yeah," he snaps his fingers. "Before I forget, you and Melanie -are- coming to my place for dinner tonight, right?"

"...alright," Sir Gregory sighs as he tosses a few papers onto the desk in front of him, "time to get started."
"If you don't mind," Marianne replies.
"While I had something else in mind to talk about today, I guess this is more immediately relevant... as of today, Celestino's tightened border security between our countries a LOT."
"Wha!?" Marianne gasps. "Is Marconetti under attack?"
"No," he shakes his head. "From what I understand, it's a preemptive measure. For the forseeable future, he's restricting travel in and out of Marconetti to essential services and royal matters."
