Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you freed your hostage and started your trek through the tunnels towards the City.

You proceed down the left hallway. This place has been abandoned for who knows how long and you know that at least Lucky frequently uses it to get into the city. Any loot you might have found is probably long gone. Besides, you're entirely done with this dimension. It's dirty, it's loud, it's depressing, most of the people are dicks. The sooner you get back to your world the better.

You walk for a long while. Without the awkward burden of being led through the wasteland by a man you've kept hostage for more than a day hanging over the party conversation springs up to alleviate the boredom of walking. Lucky had said you'd be in here a few days before reaching the ruins of the Old City. Then it's supposedly just a short climb up to the City proper. Still, being stuck down here for days will definitely grate on your nerves.

After a few hours of walking the tunnel narrows, the metal floor you'd been walking on replaced by what you think is poured concrete. However, it's not the same as the concrete you'd see in old Rhynian above-ground ruins. It seems sturdier, and smoother than ought to be possible. Still terribly uncomfortable to walk on after a few minutes. Not to mention the tunnels are starting to make you feel distinctly claustrophobic. You swear you can hear things in the walls, crawling through the dirt and running through the pipes. Every few minutes you find yourself glancing over your shoulder, the sense that someone is watching you absolutely overpowering.

(1/2)
>>
After perhaps ten hours of walking you can tell everyone is starting to feel tired and on edge. Conversation ceased long ago and it's just been a violently boring slog through featureless tunnels. Profectus is the first to really 'crack' though. “Alright, this seems as good a place as any to me. Lets set camp, yeah?” Skull Kid nods. “Sounds like a plan to me, not like we're reaching the City today.” Chrys shakes her head. “I am not sure this is a good point to stop. I feel as though we are being followed.” Skull Kid looks at her oddly for a moment. “Really? It's just been dull for me. I've got ultraviolet, infrared, and night vision but I haven't seen a thing following us or in front of us this entire time. Besides you folk, of course.”

>You'll set camp here. If nobody else has seen anything you're probably just being paranoid.
>No, Chrys is right. You've felt the sensation of being followed as well. Push on.

You glance behind you, in the direction you'd come from, and then shake your head. “No, Chrys is right. I've felt it to. Keep hearing things crawling in the walls, clanging through the pipes. Let's push on a while longer. Profectus sighs. “You two are just paranoid, these hallways are emptier than Lucky's head!” Chrys folds her arms in front of her chest, leaning her weight on one foot. “The last time we were 'just paranoid' a creature made of corrosive goo attacked us while you three stood back confused.” Profectus shakes his head. “I'm still not convinced that monster was real.” Fulvia politely butts in. “I was required to repair damage done to the floor of the lift as well as damage to Chryssa's mace. Not to mention the hole torn in Chryssa's armor.”

Profectus sighs in an exaggerated fashion. “Fine, fine. I'll nut up and march on. You're the boss, Mik.” Skull Kid simple shrugs and pushes himself up. “If you feel uncomfortable, that's cool man. Just saying if it exist, I can see it. I haven't seen a thing this entire time.” You wave them off, already striding further into the tunnel. You'd think that if a city was going to make an escape tunnel it takes days to walk through they'd build some sort of rest stops every now and again for people to sleep in.

Your party follows, most of them with at least a hint of reluctance. After a few more hours of walking you notice the hallway begin to slope gently upwards, and in general widen out and become a little nicer. The stone walls are replaced by some sort of smooth tile, the exposed stone and metal supports hidden behind plaster and cement. Soon you find yourself standing in front of two large, iron doors. They're rusted on their hinges, but Chrys pushes them open without much trouble. They do whine terribly though, loud enough to echo down the tunnel and into the room beyond.
(1/2)
>>
Once everyone has stepped through the doorway Chrys slides the door shut. Immediately that feeling of being watched dissipates, and you breathe a sigh of relief. This room is also much less claustrophobic, its even got some greenery growing up through the tile and down from the barred skylights. There is a second story, but you have difficulty making out the details of what's up there from the gloom. You think you spot a sign but it's difficult to tell.

“And you guys wanted to sleep in the tunnel.” You proclaim cockily. Profectus just grumbles something. “Yeah, yeah. Gloat later. Sleep now.” You shake your head. “You guys bed down, I'm going to take a walk around and make sure there isn't anything lurking in the darkness, waiting for us to let our guard down so it can rip out our throats and desecrate our corpses.” Profectus calls out in an exasperated tone. “Thanks for the mental image, Mik! I'm sure to sleep real peacefully with that on my mind!”

You laugh, and wander off towards the stairs to the second level. You're surprised to see Chrys followed you. “I do not trust this place, why would anyone build windows in a building intended to protect from explosives? They are structural weaknesses, entirely unnecessary.” She explains, you simply shrug. “Suit yourself, I doubt we'll find anything interesting.” She simply nods, and you instead focus on your surroundings. You channel water magic into your armor as you ascend to the second level of this little facility and the walls vanish as your magic sight kicks in. Above you, you see motes of vys drifting lazily towards that distant, bright point of light. Unfortunately the room itself is depressingly devoid of vys. You're at least relieved to see that Fulvia's generator has attracted some energy from the drifting motes above, you ought to be able to draw from that.

You cut the flow of magic and withdraw your Dragon Staff from your cloak, channeling just a touch of magic into it to illuminate the room in green light. The sparse vegetation growing throughout the complex glows brightly, and fortunately you don't spot anything amiss. No writhing clumps of tentacles, no animal-shaped blotches. Satisfied, you resolve to give a few of the rooms a cursory glance but otherwise you're not worried about getting attacked here.

(1/2)
>>
The first room you peer into, you can't determine the use of. There are two strange platforms with straps dangling off the edges. There is a row of cabinets taking up one wall, but glancing through them they've all been emptied. The next room you check is decidedly less of a disappointment. A bedroom, dominated by a set of lockers and a bunkbed. A single bulb, reinforced by iron bars, illuminates the room. You think it's controlled by a switch on the wall. A cabinet sits against the wall adjacent the locker with various bits of equipment you can't discern the use of stacked inside. There is also a small screen wired to the floor and attached to the wall sitting above a chest of drawers. There seems to be an entire hallway of rooms identical to this one.

“Well this is just fantastic! Enough beds for everyone.” Chryssa glares into one of the rooms for a few moments before shaking her head. “This seems like a trap. If something seems too good to be true it usually is. My father told me that.” You wave her off. “Don't be ridiculous, it'll be fine. Honestly you're more paranoid than I am and I'm crazier than you are.” She sighs, but doesn't say anything. You make your way over to a railing overlooking the open space where your companions are setting up. “Hey! We found bedrooms! Get up here!” You call down to them, your voice echoing in the vast bunker. Profectus calls back. “Coming!” Before starting to collect his things. It seems he'd been building a fire.

Once everyone is upstairs you share a glance. “Alright, so there's two beds to a room and six of us. Who's sleeping where?” Chrys speaks up. “I will share a room with Darzi.” Profectus simply shrugs his shoulders. “Doesn't matter to me.” Fulvia speaks up next. “I do not sleep, but I wished to ask Skull Kid for more information regarding human augmentation. I believe their designs may be used to improve my body's capabilities.” Skull Kid shrugs his shoulders. “That's fine, but I do sleep. I might not be the wealth of information you're hoping I am.” She shrugs her shoulders. Rooms decided, the party separates. Before you go off into your own room you retrieve the dragon egg from Darzi, as you might decide to meditate with it tonight.

You claim the bottom bunk, since you intend to meditate and the ceiling is too low for you to properly sit up on the top bunk. Profectus roots through the contents of the cabinet and the lockers before emerging with some kind of mask on his face. It has a long nose, capped by some sort of hard ball filled with holes. It fits tightly to his head, and it makes every breath he takes sound like a wheeze. He says something, but it just comes out as a mumbled slew of noises because of the mask. Whatever it was it must not have been important, because he hopes up into his bunk a moment later.

You've had a checklist of things you need to do for a while now. You want to test out your brooch to see if it functions between dimensions, you wanted to check on the heart you find in that locked drawer near the top of the mine, you need to take inventory of all the guns you've looted, and you feel like meditating on the egg might reveal more information about dragons, or at the very least how soon this thing will hatch or what its temperament is like.

You start off with contacting Demetrios. {Testing, testing. One-two-three. Check check. Do you hear me, Demetrios?} There is a long pause before you get any sort of response. {W--t? -s --a- --- -ik--el? I-- -o- hea---- yo- --ear--, -r- --- -l-i-h-?} The response is broken up, filled with an odd sort of buzzing and extremely faint. Even what you can pick out is unclear at best. Still, you can't believe it works! {I'm contacting you from another dimension! It's strange and futuristic, half the people seem to have some of their limbs replaced with metal. Bombs destroyed everything decades ago. It's a real shithole, if I'm being honest.} There is another long pause before he responds. {Mik—ae-l --i- -s ---nt---s. I ---- -k-y. --nta-- me w--- y-- - bet--- ---n--.} With that, the contact is severed. How rude!

(1/2)
>>
Next you reach into your cloak for the heart you retrieved from the mine, evidently the Papa Dragon's heart, if your strange hallucination in the dragon's nest was any indicator. As you withdraw it from your cloak, you're shocked to see that it's changed drastically since you first found it. For one, it's about five times larger than the fist-sized heart you found in the drawer. Its become caked with some sort of hard stone hide, though it still beats rhythmically without any trouble. Two strange extensions have grown from the top of the heart, and as you hold it in both hands they reach towards you, trying to prod through your armor to get to your flesh. Fortunately they seem weak.

You pool your cloak open and toss it inside. While interesting, it's still not particularly useful. More dangerous than anything else. Best to keep it contained in a mostly safe place. You decide to take inventory of your guns next, saving meditation upon the dragon's egg for last. You withdraw from your cloak three of those 'SMGs', a shotgun, and the oversized pistol. “Profectus, toss me down my pistol.” He reaches into his pack, withdrawing the weapon. “You got it, out of ammo anyway.” He drops it down and you catch it, setting it down next to the oversized pistol.

You check the magazines on each of them, though you're not entirely sure how to do that with the shotgun. You end up just pumping the action until your sure that all the shells have been removed. The shotgun had five rounds in it, and you know that the thug fired three shots at you. Thus it probably holds eight at most. The giant pistol has five rounds of ammunition left, and the bullets seem much, much larger than the ones for your gun. You've got seventy rounds of forty-five caliber ammunition left and you load both of the magazines you have for that gun. The SMGs are all the same make and model, and they all share the same ammunition. After you've emptied each of them you end up with a grand total of a hundred and forty six rounds, each magazine holding sixty shots. The bullets are different than the ammunition for your pistol, smaller.

You know Darzi has one shotgun, and you're pretty sure Skull Kid has tons more ammunition for his shotgun. The ones you have seem different than his, fancier for lack of a better word. It's all black and the stock is essentially just a metal bar attached to a strip of some sort of soft, fake leather material. At least you think it's supposed to imitate leather. The stock of S.K's shotgun is just a block of wood.

(1/2)
>>
File: Dragon Egg.jpg (55 KB, 309x266)

55 KB JPG
The SMGs on the other hand seem entirely more complicated than they need to be. The design seems to appear almost organic, in an insectile sort of way. The material its made of is hard, but seems brittle, and the grip is made of that same fake leathery material as the stock on the shotgun. The magazines slide in behind the grip, and there is some sort of weird glass lens on top of it. You assume you're supposed to look through that when firing. There is also a dial you're unsure of the purpose for. Its got a bunch of arrows pointing to it, so you think it's important. It doesn't seem to do anything when you twist it though. Maybe it's a misdirection, to trick unsuspecting looters into wasting time playing with some useless bullshit.

You stuff your various weaponry back into your cloak. The inside of your cloak must really be starting to look like an armory, you need to get to the damned water temple and unload some of this loot. You're looking forward to being richer than the Shah himself, but being stuck in here, and by extension the mine, is really starting to grate on your nerves. You turn to your dragon egg to calm your nerves. You recall what Darzi said, that it almost seemed as though the dragon were communing with them while they meditated. You've been looking forward to trying it yourself ever since.

>Build a little nest for it and focus on trying to keep it heated, just like Profectus and Darzi had. You know it works, and it has the added benefit of incubating the egg.

Funnily enough, I had 'Moms' Bread Pudding'. That's a euphemism if I've ever heard one.

Can we spend 2 and make it great?
>>
>>32972304
Success on meditation is binary, you either pass or you fail. You can spend vys on meditation, but only to turn failure into a success.
>>
>>32972304
I'll second that. Since we'll be meditating anyways.

>4 from tutelage
So it is teaching us magic.

You pull some planks of wood and various lengths of soiled rags from your cloak. You'd been unsure why you stuffed this stuff in there originally, but you suppose it's paying off now. You place the egg on the ground and build up your chosen nesting material around it, lighting it on fire with just a touch of magic. For a moment you're worried about starting a fire in an enclosed room, but there seem to be vents of some sort in the ceiling. They quickly filter the smoke out. Convenient.

You assume your meditation pose and quickly slip into a trance. At first you simply gather vys, drawing from the narrow stream flowing towards Fulvia's generator. You're actually able to fill your reserves completely this time, it's a real relief. You feel markedly less irritable with a full reserve. Once you've finished gathering vys, you turn your attention to the egg in front of you. Initially you're just focusing on keeping it heated, an incredibly easy task at your level of expertise. You start to lose your focus, but something draws you back in.

You feel yourself being directed, not quite against your will but it would be difficult to resist should you wish to. Whatever force is directing you seems to weed its way into your mind and leave behind instructions. You find your control over the flames licking across the egg's shell increased, though you can't quite pick out why its improved. You just know how to better control it now. It's frustrating. If you don't understand how you got better you can't replicate it, meaning that though your control might have improved it won't stay at its current level, but deteriorate once you've finished meditating.

As you focus on just how you're manipulating the flames, something clicks. The more you try to constrict and control fire, the less result you get. Thus the trick to more powerful fire magic is to guide, but not truly rule the spell you're casting. You're not controlling fire so much as you're simply guiding it, nudging it every now and again in order to prevent it from doing something you don't want. Perhaps if you'd learned this sooner, the situation at the bar wouldn't have gone so terribly. You might have been able to avoid losing control of the flames when Pipsqueak spilled her drink on the table.

This insight gained, you're preparing to withdraw from your meditation. However, you have difficulty. You try to wake up, but you can't. You try more intently but still you find yourself trapped in a trance. Slowly, weaving itself from vys in front of you, an eye begins to take shape. It is ill formed, shot through with arteries and veins. The iris, rather than being any one color, seems an assortment of different colors swirling together. They remind you in many ways of motes of vys. However, the pupil is foggy and unclear. The eye doesn't focus on you, so much as it looks in your general direction. You don't hear a voice in the back of your head so much as emotions get pressed upon you. Curiosity, fear, anger. All are present, but dominant among the storm of emotions is a deep sense of disappointment.

It doesn't think you're good enough.

>AAAND end thread.
>Congratulations! You're a third of the way to Expert level fire magic!
