You eye Ms. Song warily. “Um. I don’t really do the touchy feely thing very well?” you say.

“I ask you to come here, I don’t ask you to like it, girl. Now come to Ms. Song, no excuses,” she says, ordering you around with grandmotherly command.

Man, people can be weird sometimes. But maybe this is like, something important? And you don’t want to be a jerk and lose your potential job. So despite your hesitancy, you step forward. “Fine, but you should like, make it quick,” you say.

The old woman steps up to you and puts her hands on either side of your face. You squeeze your eyes shut at the disquieting feeling of human touch, and try not to think about it, though your entire body tenses at the sensation. (+8 Stress: 45/100) You resist movement as Ms. Song tilts your head to one side and then the other to examine you. And then she releases you from her grasp.
>>
>>32956049

You immediately step backward and rub your face, trying to scrub the lingering pins and needles from her touch from your cheeks. The whole thing probably lasted no more than ten seconds, but it seemed to drag on impossibly long to your perceptions. Nothing about the interaction felt abnormal, except for your hyper-sensitivity to people poking and prodding you, but that’s par for the course.

“What happen to you, girl?” Ms. Song asks. Her voice has lost its imperious tone, and her expression is saddened. “Why you so gloomy?”

You glare at her. “Lots of stuff happened to me,” you say, your words harsh. “Not the least of it is you putting your hands all over my face. I said make it quick, not take your time – and I’m not gloomy, I’m just, like, tense right now, okay?”

“Call it what you want,” Ms. Song says, walking away. The way she does it tells you to follow, so you do. She leads you through a doorway and into a room with a table and a few chairs. “Sit down, sit down,” she says, doing the same herself.

You take a seat, and take a second to look at the table. It’s made of like, marble or something, and features a long, ferocious dragon curling and twisting through the air and burning a serene villiage with its fiery breath. The whole scene is beautifully rendered in appropriately colored stonework. Man, this table was probably really, ridiculously expensive. Like, as in, costs more than a car expensive. Or maybe more than a couple cars.
>>
>>32956054

Ms. Song looks inquiringly at you from where she sits, even as she starts setting weird bowls and cups and jars labeled in Chinese on the table before her. “Who are you really, girl?”

“Uh,” you say. “Sierra?”

Ms. Song’s expression is reproachful. “I call you girl, sure, but I am not deaf I hear your name when you say it first time,” she tells you. “Why you want work with Marshal?”

Right. Job interview. “Because,” you say, trying to think of reasons.

We know perfectly well that Sierra is getting massive kicks from this whole hero schtick, even if she isn't as BATMAN as Rowan. Add to that the warm fuzzies and feeling of "rightness" from using the shadow powers to make pretty pictures to music? And Sierra knows she needs to be honest here.

But we need to maintain our street quotient, so also mumble something about money in a self-conscious fashion at the end.

...also I had to get into bed before I passed out last night, I thought we were going to raise that we had another name as well?

If Chinalady specifically asks for it or providing the name is useful, sure. I don't see much reason otherwise.

Not that it would cause trouble as long as we don't make pacts on our name.

We might be able to get more informed about that from Waldric, to be honest. While I wouldn't trust him to just tell us right now, we can still ask if it really holds any power, and if he says no then we can force his hand by pushing a demonstration.

The fact that we can't just wreck the people we already have names for does strongly imply there's no intrinsic power though.

There’s a lot of reasons, now that you think about it. None of them are like, outright wrong, but none of them seem to paint the whole picture as to what’s actually motivating you. You were never good at figuring out why you do the stuff you do. You just kind of do it and deal with the consequences?

“Well,” you say, “I mean. I didn’t know there was a job or work or anything. I was just kind of going with the flow. And then I’m like, killing demons or whatever? I mean, and then I was thinking about it and like, Isaac’s doing good stuff. The stuff we’re fighting is all like, evil and whatever. It’s… cut and dry,” you say.

“So you want do what you do because it simple?” asks Ms. Song, sounding appalled. “You don’t like thinking so much about things, do you?”

“No!” you say. “You’re like – don’t just jump to conclusions, I’m not done talking.”

“Well maybe you should talk better, I thought you done already.”
>>
>>32957056

You take a deep breath and try not to let her needle you. (+2 Stress: 47/100) “No. It’s like this. I’m like… not the best person, right? And I’ve done some stuff that’s probably not, you know, stuff I should have done,” you explain. “So like, now I have a chance to kind of… I don’t know, be the good guy for a while. And it’s kind of better than being the whatever guy that doesn’t really care. Does that make sense?”

Ms. Song looks at you carefully. “You have butterfly in your head? Because you not make sense at all. You want to be good, be police officer or post man,” she instructs you.

“Well maybe I will,” you say. You really won’t, though. “But right now this is what I’m doing, so I might as well get paid for it while I’m at it, right?”

“Maybe you not make sense, but I see you are not stupid,” Ms. Song says, sounding a little proud. “Okay, you can get paycheck to fight yaoguai, girl, but that is not mean you aren’t also seventeen year old teenager too, understand?”

You rub your forehead. You don’t understand anything right now, but at least you got the job? Maybe? “What?”

>“Well maybe you should talk better, I thought you done already.”

Ms. Song finishes setting up her weird oriental tea set thing. She picks up a little porcelain cup, pours a splash of steaming water from a kettle into it, and then crumbles a handful of leaves into the liquid. She covers it and begins shaking in a gentle, rhythmic motion. The smell from the crunched leaves is pungent and overwhelmingly bitter.

“I don’t really like tea,” you say, trying to breath through your mouth until the smell passes.

“Is not for drinking is for fortune telling,” she tells you impatiently. “Usually charge one hundred dollar for fake reading, and one thousand dollar for real reading, but for you, maybe free this time,” she says thoughtfully. “Tell me something about yourself, girl. I cannot read if I don’t know what it is I am reading.”

“Well… what do you need to know, exactly?” you ask.

Ms. Song puts the cup down on the table, and then lights a couple sticks of incense that are set in elegant little jade holders on her left and right. “I’m not playing twenty question with you, girl. If you want good fortune, you tell me what I need to know,” she says.

So… if she’s going to like, look at your fate or future or whatever, you figure a good way to start is with your dreams. That’s what mystic kind of people want to hear about, right? But for any of your nightmares to make sense, they’d probably need to be put in context, so you figure you’ll start by talking about your family people.

“Well, I guess you probably need to know about like, why I’m with Isaac in the first place,” you say.

“Maybe I do, why don’t you tell me then,” she says. She begins humming something quietly as she pours another cup of tea, and begins stirring it around with a long, thin bone.

“Yeah, I guess,” you say. You don’t really like talking about anything, but so long as you stick to the facts you can get through it pretty much without issue. “Well my mom and sister died when I was, you know, like, five or something.”

“Mm, who killed them?” Song asks, curious.

“Uh. Nobody?” you say, kind of staggered by the weird question. “They just. We were on this boat and it… you know. Sank. They uh. They drowned.” You try not to recall your hazy memories from that night. (+3 Stress: 50/100)
>>
>>32957638

Ms. Song glances up at you. Probably wants to know why you didn’t go with them.

“My dad he – you know, saved me,” you say.

“Where your dad now?” asks Song.

“He… uh. Kind of disappeared,” you say. “But he, you know, left me with my great aunt or something. But she was… kind of really old and. You know. Died like, a couple weeks later and uh… so I went into foster care, then.”

You used to like to imagine your dad would show up one day and take you home with him, but he never did. You kind of learned to stop hoping for that, after a while. Some people have told you that he probably had his own reasons for leaving, and that maybe he was a bad guy or whatever, but you’re certain he meant to come back. He was the best. And the only reason he wouldn’t come back is if he couldn’t, and the only way he couldn’t is if he were dead.

“Okay, very good, I think I see now,” says Ms. Song. She stops stirring with the bone and produces another pinch of tea leaves from another jar, and begins peppering them into the two cups she has prepared. “Anything else?”
>>
>>32957652

“Well I mean. I dream about them a lot,” you say. “Like. All the time. But they’re not really… good dreams? They’re all kind of more like nightmares. And I get the same ones all the time, usually. Like. One with me on the boat, and like, then I look into the water and I see… things,” you say, feeling the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. “Dead people. And then I’m like, drowning or… you know, and then the thing with the shears shows up and starts hacking people apart.”

Ms. Song nods. “Those definitely are not good dreams,” she agrees. “When’s last time you dream like this?”

“Well,” you say, “not so much, recently. I had this one where I kind of remembered this other name I used to have from my mom, though.” You figure if you’re going to get a good fortune telling, Song will need to know your magic demon name thing. “She used to call me Sakheris,” you say.

Ms. Song slows down in her preparations for a fraction of a second. If you didn’t have quick eyes, you probably would have missed it. “That is strange name,” she says. “You say you had sister. She have other name too?”

>No, just me.
>I really don't remember.

“Well actually, yeah,” you say. “She called her Nydalis, sometimes.”

“And your mother, she die twelve years ago?”

“Something like that,” you say. “What’s – how’s Sakheris a strange name?” There was something in her voice when she said that.

“It is yaoguai name,” says Song. “You know what it mean?”

“I thought you said you weren’t doing twenty questions,” you say, a little miffed at her prying.

“Well that was before I find out you are interesting,” says Ms. Song, smiling.

“Well whatever. Anyway I do know what it means, it means blood,” you say. You could figure that much out at least.

Song laughs to herself. “It mean much more than blood, girl,” she says. “It is from word ‘sakherith’, which can mean essence of life. Or priceless jewel, maybe.”

“Do you know what Nydalis means?” you ask.
>>
>>32958116

“I would hope so if I do this for money,” Song says. “It is from ‘nydalith’, which mean soul, or essence of being. It mean other things too, but I do not know word in English. Maybe ‘highest point’, such as top of mountain or something.”

That’s kind of interesting, you think. And it makes you think your name’s kind of better than you did before. It’s kind of… girly, maybe? Do you have like, the demonic name equivalence of like, Precious or like, Gem or something? You wonder if your mom just liked the name or if she really did think you were that great. (-4 Stress: 46/100) “Why’d you ask when my mom died?” you ask, following your train of thought.

“Because,” says Song, “there was certain yaoguai who die twelve year ago. And most people think she had no children, but I have suspicion that she really had two twin daughters, and that she name them Sakheris and Nydalis.”

You freeze up. “Wh… what?”

“But this is unimportant!” says Song, dismissing the whole thing with a wave. “is just coincidence – you would need to be at least half yaoguai if you were that Sakheris, and you are just plain American white girl with attitude, aren’t you?”

Tell her you don't want any trouble for Isaac before you reveal your nature.
>>
>>32958486
Sierra already noticed her pause at the mention of her name, and the leading questions about our sister were before the talk about our mother. Sierra will know.

>>32958497
That's not how fortune teller/oracle types work. You try to get smart with them and they'll shut you down, try to impress them with your swagger and they ignore you. Say that, and she'll just carry on pretending to think we're a regular old human. Notice how she suddenly waxed lyrical once we opened up and gave out the names? If you're honest and direct with a fortune teller, they will reward you with what they really know.
>>
She must know who we are _Isaac has already told her, else we wouldn't be here.

She's just trying to provoke us into letting on how much we already know.

>I AM a half-demon
Oh so you a one-type half-demon, well Sakheris and Nydalis more than 1 type of demon so obviously not you

>I am 3 types of demon, Belphegoran, Verwelken and Infernus
Oh so you very luck girl, but Sakheris' mother legendary Landmaster, you just half-demon

etc etc.

It's not so much a fortune teller con as it is a questioning technique.
>>
Anybody else interested in her use of the term "yaoguai"?

>>
>>32958714

It's just chinese for "monster" or "demon"
Like youkai

It got used for bear monsters in Fallout for Yogi pun reasons.
>>
>>32958714
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yaoguai
It's just the Chinese word for 'demon.'
>>
>>32958714
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yaoguai

>Yaoguai (妖怪 pinyin yāoguài) or yaomo (妖魔 yāomó, literally, "demon") or yaojing (妖精 yāojīng, literally, "sprite" or "seductive") is a Chinese term that generally means "demon".

She's either calling us a demon, or....'seductive'.
>>
>>32958755
>>32958756
I'm aware. I still want to know how demon stuff plays out in the East.
>>
>>32958771
More accurately 'seductive animal spirits.' Chinese demons are animal-ghosts who try to seduce people into sinning.

Maybe. She already has poison spit.
>>
>>32959084
Venomous.
Yes, there's a difference. Poison is ingested, venom is bad when it gets into the blood. Yeah, a lot of things are both, but you can just drink some venoms and be mostly fine.
>>
>>32959123
So you're saying, kissing someone won't hurt them unless they have a cut on their tongue or something?
>>
>>32958984
She should get one of those snake/spider milking things.

It would be funny to have Isaac or Harvey or Rowan walk in on Sierra biting a jar with some rubber stretched over the top and they just stand there looking at eachother while venom drips and Sierra goes "what" in a muffled voice.
>>
>>32959123
That's not the difference, actually. Venom is a class of poison, produced by animals for injection. Toxin is a class of poison produced within living cells. Poisons are anything that's poisonous. It's like squares and rectangles.
>>
>>32959188

Well, it seems like whenever anyone actually touches Sierra's skin it causes physical pain to her. First when Rowan tried to console her a couple of threads back and now with Ms. Song. And as far as I can tell, Sierra's not into pain.

>>
You drop the glamor on your horns, and let your appearance slide toward the demonic end of the spectrum. You tap your claws on the table, careful not to scratch it or anything. “I think you already knew the answer to that question,” you say darkly.

Ms. Song pauses to take in your appearance. She doesn’t look impressed. “You so pale. I thought your Californian boys like tan girls?”

“Well they – I look fucking great, shut up,” you say angrily. (+4 Stress: 50/100)

Ms. Song tilts her head to look at you at another angle. “So you already find nice boyfriend then who likes ghost girls?”

You hold your head in your claws. “That’s none of your business!” (+3 Stress: 53/100)

“Oh so you haven’t yet? Maybe you should listen to Ms. Song and spend more time out in sun, girl.”

This is completely outrageous. “Maybe I should spend more-” you can’t even finish restating her ridiculous advice. Your blood’s boiling now. “What the hell, do you know about my mom or not?!” you exclaim. (+5 Stress: 58/100)

Ms. Song takes a moment to finish preparations on her tea ceremony thing deal before answering. “I know of your mom, yes,” she says.

You stare at her expectantly. “I really don’t have patience for crap right now,” you say.

The old lady shakes her head, disappointed. “If you don’t have patience you should get some,” she says. “But before you get angry and break my shop, I will tell you some things.”
>>
>>32960457
It's not physical pain, she just gets really uncomfortable
>>
>>32960750

You listen on, barely able to stay in your seat.

“First thing, your mother ruled mighty Diyu nation when she was alive,” she says. “It is called sometimes Heiguo in Asia. I do not know name in English, but translation is like Black Kingdom.”

“She was like… the queen?” you ask, your mind reeling.

“She was not like queen,” Song tells you sternly. “She was like empress.”

Holy hell. Your mom was a big deal? “Wait,” you say, trying to puzzle together how this effects you. “So… does this make me like, heir to the throne or something?” No way you’re a literal fucking princess. (+7 Stress: 65/100)

“Maybe if your mother was still alive,” Song says. “Nobody care now she is dead. And Heiguo is gone anyway, the other nations eat it up when empress fell. So there you go. Tragic story. You want fortune now?”

>There’s like, countries in hell?

“You told me to get patience, so I got some fucking patience woman,” you say. “Questions first, fortune later. I mean. Like, I figured my mom was a demon but… I never really thought…” you trail off. “Her name wasn’t Cornelia, was it,” you say.

“You are clever sometimes when you want to be,” says Ms. Song, smiling slightly. “Your mom’s name was Corithis. She was very powerful yaoguai. Very scary. You don’t make own country in Diyu by sitting in room and talking about it,” she says.

Corithis.

Wow. You never knew your own mom’s name until right now. This is like. Serious stuff. Like. Heavy. Like, you don’t even have words right now. It’s a really cool name. She kind of has a point. Like. A fucking good one. You still can’t really budge from what you know, though. “B-but,” you stammer, “I… was there. I saw it,” you say, frowning. You look at your claws, and find that they’re shaking. “I…” you swallow. “I remember it happening.” (+5 Stress: 51/100) (-1 Sanity: 99/100)

Song’s expression is unreadable. “Maybe you don’t remember so well as you think you do.”

>>
>>32961515

Getting someone angry is one of the easiest fucking ways to get a measure of someone.

If our sister is alive, then when we meet her there's probably going to be some shouty-angry reconciliation. Followed by impressive amounts of retribution against whoever killed mom, I imagine.

>>32961529

instead of just saying "actually I'm a hellborn" people were saying to go with a flashy reveal of our demon features and pushing that we were impatient, which is pretty fucking tryhard. Languid's post even explicitly stated that she was unimpressed by this stunt.
>>
>>32961588
I very much doubt we remembered. We got something like a 15 to not snap at Rowan while at the log and that still failed. Memory/emotional shit has tough DCs.

>instead of just saying "actually I'm a hellborn" people were saying to go with a flashy reveal of our demon features and pushing that we were impatient, which is pretty fucking tryhard. Languid's post even explicitly stated that she was unimpressed by this stunt.
Nobody expected it to impress her. Nobody expected it to intimidate her. I'm utterly confused where you're getting the impression that that's what anyone was going for with it.
>>
>>32961602
Just had gotten back after that choice, or I would have pointed put how stupid it is.
>>
>>32961602
>instead of just saying "actually I'm a hellborn" people were saying to go with a flashy reveal of our demon features and pushing that we were impatient, which is pretty fucking tryhard.

It's really not, hell it's the same as saying your hellborn, and not a single post implied that it was anything other than that. Stop freaking out over nothing.
>>
>>32961607
So then it might be a partial success, I'm waiting until the juries out
>>
>>32961645
Not the same guy, but if it's the same thing then why didn't we just say it?
>>
>>32961692
Some people prefer actions over words.
Others might have just wanted to let the veil drop because it takes up energy.
But not a single post implied intimidation.
>>
>>32961692
Same reason you might wave instead of saying high.
>>
>>32961645
>>32961621
In conversation, we use our words. Getting the things out on top of that is just posing.

If you get asked if you've been going to the gym more often, a normal person might say "yeah" while someone who's attempting to impress would flex, and probably look like a bit of a douche.
>>
>>32961692
She's an impulsive person steadily getting more stressed out. Snapping at someone was pretty in character, so I guess that makes lawnguy the edgelord?
>>
>>32961692
Yeah, I just wanted to provide physical proof; it seemed more Sierra to let the veil drop
>>
>>32961725
>You drop the glamor on your horns, and let your appearance slide toward the demonic end of the spectrum....“I think you already knew the answer to that question,” you say darkly.

I took it from Languids writing that it was meant to be. I don't mean to say that you implied any intimidation, but it can easily be interpreted as such.
>>
>>32961771
You only do that if someone is a fair distance away from you, to catch their eye. You don't wave to someone sitting across from you at a table when you're already mid conversation.
>>
>>32961792
Plus, Sierra might feel more comfortable that way too
>>
>>32961802
Fine, sup-nod instead of saying Hi.
>>32961799
Languid will interpret actions as he does, perhaps more explanation in the choice of action would have changed that.
>>
>>32961799
I thought "darkly" was meant to imply that Sierra was gloomy - not cheery. Unless she was trying to be spooky.
>>
>>32961838
Speaking from a slightly academic perspective on the study of body language and psychology, the scale of the physical gesture is of critical importance. Within spoken conversation, anything more than a small movement tends to project brashness and aggression. Suddenly summoning claws and bigass horns is not a neutral gesture in any sense; especially given that horns are all about increasing apparent size - which does in fact play a large role in projecting dominance and aggression in human body language.
>>
>>32961964
Curse you, psychologists!
>>
>>32961877
Darkly tends to imply glaring, and a threatening tone.
Gloomy is depressed.
>>
>>32961994
I'll darkly gloom you!

But I guess you're right.
>>
The reason I voted for just showing her was because it seemed like the most simple way to do it. Anyone can claim to be a demon, so why not just prove it?
>>
>>32961775
Kind of a busted metaphor. If you're asking if someone goes to the gym, presumably they look muscular. There can be multiple reasons for that which aren't gym membership, so flexing does not answer the question and it only reiterates what has already been noticed.

The hellborn thing wasn't a visible thing. Sierra looks like a regular person. Dropping the glamor instantly answers the question, unlike flexing.

It's closer to if Ms Song had said something like "well the only way you could be that person is if you only had one arm" and then Sierra responded by taking off her prosthetic.
>>
>>32961964
People were overwhelmingly in favor if the brash gesture. Combine that with our stress and the Magistrate's deliberate and obvious goading, and it was a stupid idea.
>>
>>32962037
Most of our ideas are.
>>
>>32961964
Which is why such a gesture was interesting in a cinematic sense. It evokes the idea of clever camera angles to make the transition and makes Ms Song's nonplussed attitude humorous.
>>
Why exactly are people upset? They think that we just blew our interview?
>>
>>32962086

People are always upset when everything doesn't go picture perfect in a quest.
>>
>>32962086
>>32962118
Nah.
It's just the inevitable bit of questing. When there's so many people playing, inevitably someone who did not vote for a decision will feel irritated at how it turned out, and will bring up the reasoning for it in an attempt to bring people around to their side of an argument.
All the rest is just froth, people trolling back and forth while waiting for the next update.

Shitstorms are ,obviously, their own thing, but that's neither here nor there.
>>
>>32962086
They don't like that Sierra's a bit of a douchebag. Things are just getting to the point where it's not the start of the quest anymore and people get antsy every time the mc does something that's not bland and inoffensive and safe.

Standard operating procedure.
>>
>>32962016
Not under a shirt. One of the most ripped looking guys I know, you'd never be able to tell till he gets his shirt off since he doesn't go for aesthetics instead of strength.

>>32961877
That would be "sullenly", or gloomily like you said. A dark expression is frowns and glares. Think about the difference between "his face fell" and "his face darkened". "Face like thunder" is also related, c.f. turns of phrase like "the skies darkened with thunder"

>>32962071
It was an inherently aggressive gesture, so it's odd to see all the people saying there was no way to know that wheeling out bigass natural weapons could possibly be interpreted as an attempt at intimidation.
>>
>>32962186
It's not so much being bland and inoffensive, it's trying not to shoot ourselves in the foot when we're trying to get exposition.
>>
>>32962174

Which is dumb because what good will bringing people to their side of an argument do?

The argument's already over, the decision has been made. It's beating a dead horse. It's extra pointless because everyone's anonymous and there's no "credibility" to win anyway.

Honestly, I wish people would just make their best arguments during the voting stage and let things go once the decision is made.
>>
>>32962222
Did it stop us from getting exposition? It looks like people are just getting pissy that Sierra is acting like Sierra.
>>
>>32962253
You say that it's Sierra acting like Sierra, but it's mostly just the voters deciding to do something cool or funny.
>>
>>32962253
It doesn't really fit with her previous behavior to be honest. Sierra is snide and sarcastic, grandiose physical gestures are more chestbeating and puffing yourself up.
>>
It’s not like that. You can remember. You can remember everything right now, if that’s what it takes – you can prove it!

Part of your brain notices that Ms. Song looks worried, but the more part of your mind is tying itself into knots trying to prove to itself it has a valid perception of reality. If you can… that night…. (-4 Sanity: 94/100) (+5 Stress: 65/100)

“It’s… going to be fine, you’re fine. Everything’s fine,” says dad, clutching you to his chest. “Everything’s going to be just fine, Sierra, it’s okay. We’re okay, don’t worry.”

It’s cold. You’re wet. It’s dark. Dad’s cold and wet too. You stare off into nothing. Your eyes can’t see anything. You’re crying, but no sound comes out. You can’t… you can’t stop seeing everything. It’s just… there. (+5 Stress: 70/100) (-1 Sanity: 93/100)

You don’t know how long you’re there. Dad’s looking at you. You don’t know what’s happening. You don’t understand.

“Sierra? Can you… say something, princess? Please just… can you… you don’t have to say anything but… can you just look at me? Just so daddy knows your okay, okay? Look at me, sweety, please just... can you look at daddy?”

You can’t unsee anything. It’s right there. It’s still happening. Time means nothing to you. Whether a minute or an hour passes, you can’t say. It’s meaningless. (+5 Stress: 75/100) (-1 Sanity: 92/100)

You don’t know where you are or what time it is. But at some point dad gets an idea, then. You can feel his presence brighten, even if you’re not consciously paying attention to the fact. “It… it’s not real,” he says quietly. “It. It didn’t happen. Okay? Listen to daddy. None of that was true, okay? It was… you were having a dream, princess,” he says.

You barely process his words. (+5 Stress: 80/100) (-1 Sanity: 91/100)

“You were. That’s right. A bad dream. But you woke up, okay? You woke up and it’s all gone now. Dreams can’t hurt you. It was all a dream, okay? Are you still listening, Sierra? It was just a dream and you… you can just forget it ever happened. Because we forget dreams, don’t we? Don’t… wouldn’t it be nice if it was just… all a dream?” he asks you, placing himself in front of your eyes.

It’s hard but… you focus on dad. “A… dream?” you ask, vaguely confused. The cloud of… things… starts to press back around your understanding. (+5 Stress: 85/100) (-1 Sanity: 90/100)

He smiles broadly at you. You did something good. “That’s right,” he says. “You were just having a really bad dream,” he says hurriedly. “But I’m here now and you… you can go ahead and wake up now.”

It’s… what you’re seeing. It’s. It’s not real. That’s what dad says. It’s a dream. It was just a dream. (+3 Stress: 88/100) (-4 Sanity: 86/100)

You struggle with what you’re seeing. It’s pulling at you. Dragging you back to the weird place where reality doesn’t mean anything. (+2 Stress: 90/100) (-1 Sanity: 85/100) Dad’s words give you something to latch onto, though. You find them pulling you back from the weird place you were stuck in before.

After a long time, he parts briefly to look at your face. “Let’s see a smile on my little princess,” he tells you, giving you one himself.

His smile is infectious. A weak smile breaks on your face. You shiver then, realizing the full extent of the cold. Your smile disappears. “I’m... cold,” you whisper.

“I know sweety, we’ll get you warm again,” he says. “Let’s find somewhere to stay for the night.”

You burry your head in his shoulder. “Okay,” you murmur.

You blink. Your eyes are wet. Have you been crying? You feel shaky and weak, though at the same time supercharged, like you drank a Red Bull or something. You exhale, and feel a kind of weird, inexplicable calm come over you. (-12 Stress: 78/100)

“So you not burn up my shop now, yeah?” she asks. “What happen with you?”

Things aren’t really making. It’s not really quite so clear exactly, though you do know where everything is. It’s fine. You just need to breath. Breathing is important. Play it cool.

You can talk. Use your words. “Ms. Song. Right,” you say, nodding to yourself. “We’re… here. Right now. Got it. Yeah, okay, cool,” you say. Talking is hard. Why haven’t you ever noticed before?

“You went into coma, girl, what was with all that freaky business?” Song asks you again.

“Just. The. The.” That’s right, the.

“The?” Song asks, looking at you like you’re crazy.

You’re not crazy. You’re just stunned. Where are your words right now? It’s like they’re somewhere without you. “Remembered something,” you explain. I did. Yeah, that’s what was going on,” you say. Right. That’s exactly what happened. (+1 Sanity: 86/100) “Wow, that was not what I’ve done before,” you say. You have a really bad headache right now. You massage the side of your head with your knuckles.

“You remember who kill your mother?” Ms. Song asks, intrigued.

“Nope,” you say flatly. “Let’s stop talking about that now.”

Ms. Song catches the edge in your voice and doesn’t press the subject. Good.

You change the subject. It’s getting kind of easier to talk now, but your words are not behaving themselves. “Let’s. Why don’t we like. The fortune thing. Right now,” you say. You feel like you need to clarify yourself, though. Maybe you didn’t get your point across. “You know. The… that.”

“Okay, just calm down already,” says Ms. Song. She passes you one of the tea cups. “Drink that one.”
>>
>>32963457

It smells awful. “I said I don’t like tea,” you say, surprising yourself with the clarity of your thought to word translation. You’re getting pretty good at this. Again. You feel kind of weird. Weird as in wrong.

“Quit your whining! I don’t need you drink tea I need you interact with tea,” she says. “Take one sip and give me cup back.”

You reluctantly raise the cup from its little fancy saucer. It’s kind of shaking all over the place. No, wait, that’s your hand. You take another deep breath and exhale. The shaking has lessened. You brace yourself against the disgusting herbal scent and flavor and take a sip. The force of the tea hits you like a flavor punch to the nose, and you gag involuntarily. It’s the most disgusting thing you’ve tasted recently. (+1 Sanity: 87/100) You spill about half the cup onto the table, but whatever. You slam the cup back down and quick pass the whole ensemble back to its mistress.

“Good, good,” she says, collecting the cup. She pours the heated contents into a spare bowl. She then takes the other cup of tea and pours it out as well without even tasting the bitter beverage herself. She then sets the cups down and pulls out an ornate little notebook and gold-tipped pen, and starts jotting down notes in Chinese as she examines the contents of each cup and compares them with one another.

This goes on for about ten minutes. You slowly start to feel back in sorts, though things aren’t quite clicking as fast as they should be.
>>
>>32963484

It’s like everything is on a one second delay, and you have to read the subtitles. But after you get used to it, it’s not too hard. But Ms. Song keeps doing the tea thing, and you’re getting bored. You definitely don’t want to think anymore about what you just thought about. Not for a while, at any rate.

Your unease comes to a head. “What are you doing?” you finally ask, unable to keep quiet.

“I’m reading your fortune! Tss!” she says, producing a jeweler’s glass and starting to examine the leaves in ultra-detail. “What you want to know? I have general idea now.”

“Like. I can ask about anything?” you ask, getting a little excited in spite of yourself. This could actually be pretty dang cool.

Ms. Song does not share your enthusiasm. “Of course not!” she snaps. “Rule number one of fortune telling – the more definite your question, the more indefinite your answer. So even if you ask anything, you will find most questions are stupid! But you might find out stupid question is smartest question.”

“Uh. Okay?” you say, kind of confused. You can do this, though. Maybe.
