"Y... you said that I could trust you!" I shout. "But you're working with HIM!?" I point at that... PERSON behind her who's clutching his arm.
"I- I am, but..." Irene darts her head from me to him. "J... just calm down, okay? We can all work this out, and-"
”THAT PSYCHO JUST TRIED TO KILL US!"

I reach for Mina and take her hand. I thought that Irene was a nice person, but if she's on the same side as this Archibald guy...

"God damn it..." Irene clenches her fists and turns back to face ARchibald. "What the hell did you do!?"
"I... I was just..." Archibald drops to his knees. "Ireeeeeene, my aaaarm...."
"Stay right there, okay?" Irene says, turning back to us. "I'm going to go check on him, but I'll be right back. I'm sure this was all just a big stupid misunderstanding."

I'm scared.

Both for myself, and for Mina.

I don't know what the hell I did to ruin that guy's arm like I apparently did, but he's freaking out pretty badly and I can't be sure if he'll try to attack again... not to mention that my phone's lying right by his feet.

If he picks it up and finds out where I live... no. I can't risk that.

"Okay," I nod. "But if you try ANYTHING..." I squeeze Mina's hand.
"I won't," Irene shakes her head. "Don't worry, I'm not one of the bad guys."
"You seem pretty guilty by association..." Mina growls under her breath as Irene hurries over to her fallen comrade.

"I... Ireeeene!" Archibald cries as Irene aproaches him. "Look at what she did! My arm, its..."
"Shut the hell up for a minute," Irene replies in a cold voice. "Cecile said that you tried to KILL her and her friend, what the hell were you-"
"It was just intimidation!" he shouts. "Sh- she clearly has the book, I could see her hesitating when I asked her about it!"
"I ran into her yesterday, you dumbass. She's the girl I told you about."
"Y- you're too trusting! That little bitch went into a trance and tried to burn off my arm! Just look at it, she's clearly already lost herself!"

Gently, Irene lifts the arm that I... I guess I burnt. His entire shirt sleeve is completely charred, and the wind just shifted so I can smell it too... Christ, that is an awful smell.

"Well your hand is fine," Irene sighs. "Grit your teeth for a minute, okay?"
"Huh?" Archibald cringes back. "Wh- what're you going to do?"

Raising his arm a little higher, Irene reaches over to his shoulder with her other hand and takes a firm grip on his sleeve.

The sound of tearing fabric and a high-pitched muffled scream fills the air as she rips the burnt cloth right off his short and exposes his wound to the air.

"...it's not even that bad," Irene sighs, dropping his hand and rising to her feet. "From the way you were going on, I thought that you'd been burnt to the bone but this is just a superficial wound."
"Superficial!?" he screams. "Just LOOK at this, it's a third-degree burn!"
"I've seen stab wounds that cover more area than that. Hell, do you have any clue about the kind of stuff that -I've- suffered through?"

What the hell is he crying for, I'M the one who wants to cry right now!

"Cecile, are you really going to wait for that chick to come back over here?" Mina asks.
"Yeah," I nod. "But if she tries anything, we run. Okay?"
"I guess..."

We stand there completely tense for a little while longer, waiting for Irene to finish taking care of that idiot's injuries. Part of me wishes that I'd just gone all the way and fried his entire arm off.

"Cecile, I am SO sorry for all of this," Irene says as she runs back over to us. "Random psychopath attacks are the exact thing that we're trying to AVOID by doing this," she glares back at Archibald, "but I guess certain people need to be kept on a leash."
"Who the hell ARE you people, anyways!?" Mina shouts, squeezing my hand tightly. "If I hadn't thrown that rock, he would've taken Cecile's head off!"
"It's... complicated," she sighs. "But we're looking for a certain book, and-"
"There are ways to ask people for help, you know that!?"
"Seriously," I say.

Now I'm REALLY happy that I didn't say anything about having the book when she asked about it yesterday.

>What does Irene's group want the books for?

Well, we know who Charlotte works for. We have zero clue who these guys work for.

We must assume there is at least one faction out there that is collecting books to make an army of superpowers.

Mr Gauthier, from what we've seen, wants to eliminate superpowers due to how it's ruined his life. So we can safely assume that he is NOT part of that camp.

So that just leaves this guy and Irene. Honestly I'm banking on them working for government agency/another similar secretive group. It would seem to me that if they were from the superpower army guys that they would be older and have some training. Especially with their mention that they want to get rid of random telepathic psychos.

So far, both groups seem trustworthy, but I would trust Gauthier more just on the basis of his backstory reminding me of Dr Xavier.

Speaking of which, when are we going to practice active camo?

Not necessarily. He might be going Professor Xavier on the situation, and building an army of loyal powers to fight off the evil powers.
But he's certainly going to be pissy at random powers if they killed his wife.
>>
>>32890816
I already voted for storming off in a huff, but if we do say this, leave out any mention of Char and Gauthier. Outing the fact that we're already in contact with a competing group is something we should avoid, at least until we get some indication of who the fuck Irene works for and what the hell they want.

We still don't know if Irene or the Jack Bauer wanabe are the norm in their group.

That wouldn't make much sense based on what we've been told. Sure it's POSSIBLE, but so is the fact that Gauthier is actually an alien who will use the magic books to open a portal for his psychic alien warriors to invade earth. I mean, we can't rule that out, but we also have nothing to really suggest it.

Once the park is out of sight and I don't feel that weird buzzing in the back of my head, I breathe a sigh of relief. That means that those two aren't following us.

But Mina... she's still holding my hand really tightly and is pretty much attached to my arm.

"Hey, are you gonna be alright?" I ask, turning to her.
"Think so," Mina nods. "Still scared though."
"You wanna still go and get something to eat? That might help us to take our minds off what happened."
"I guess, as long as it's far away from here. It'd be bad to head straight home anyways, I don't want them finding out where I live."
"Yeah, I was thinking the same thing."

McDonald's is close by... but there's a Wendy's a little ways off. We can walk there and eat, then head back to Mina's house before it gets too dark.

"You fine with Wendy's?" I ask.
"I'm fine with whatever," Mina sighs. "Let's just go..."

BZZZZT BZZZZZZZZZT

Crap, my phone's going off.

"One minute, let me get this," I say to Mina as I reach into my pocket and answer the phone. "Hello?"
"Cecile!?" a girl's voice calls out. "Are you okay!?"
"Y... yes? Who is this?"
"It's Charlotte! I saw what happened and was just about to have my friends intervene when I saw you do... whatever that was. They're not in the area anymore, but did they do anything to you? There are Control-type Branches that can do that kind of thing..."

I think the man is a psychopath and he said his power was Ornamental Tangram. You would probably know what that means better then I do. The woman was the girl Irene I told you about, and she stopped the fight. I THINK she's ok, but apparently her and the psychopath are a team.

honestly i vote we keep mina normal since she's been seen by both sides as normal. if they suddenly see her with powers it would be a huge red flag and the only real way we'd be able to pass it off is if they buy the idea of the books making a gardener
>>
"I- I'm fine," I say. "That guy who attacked me, he said that his Branch was called Ornamental Tangram... you probably know more about that than I would."
"I see," Charlotte replies. "You're not hurt, are you? What about your friend?"
"Neither one of us was hurt. That girl who showed up and broke up the fight was the Irene girl who I told you about, the green doritos guy seemed too scared of her to try anything with her around. She -seems- okay, but those two are working together so I can't be too sure."
"That's good, I'm just glad to hear that you're okay."

And I'm just glad to BE okay. I can still feel those things on my neck.

"Cecile, who are you talking to?" Mina asks. "Is that Theresa?"
"No, I'm talking to Charlotte," I reply.
"Cha- you mean the girl who you were with last night!?"
"Yeah, she was worried about us."
"Oh man, she really does have us under surveillance..."

Alternatively we use it on her and then pick a side(likely Charlotte imo), giving them Mina's book, keeping Theresa's in reserve.

I definitely understand why Mina's worried, but the immediate danger has already passed. I think.

"Charlotte, you said that you saw what happened?" I ask. "How'd you do that? I know that you can talk to animals, but can you see through their eyes too?"
"Erm..." Charlotte's clearing her throat... I guess my question caught her off-guard. "I don't really feel comfortable talking about that over the phone. Would it be okay if I met up with you face-to-face? I'm still rather worried about you after what just happened."

I look up... and then I see them. The trees.

I thought those were leaves, but they're not. They're crows.

Oh my god I have never seen that many crows before in my entire life.

"Ch... Charlotte," I whisper-shout into the phone, "What the heck's going on with the crows!?"
"Loki saw that you were in danger, but he's not exactly a fighter," Charlotte replies. "And my friend who -is- a fighter flies too slowly to make it to you in time, so I had Loki call together as many crows as he could..."

Can't be too careful, after all.

"Cecile!" Charlotte calls out from down the block... and then she runs REALLY FAST until she's right in front of us. "I was so worried about you!"

After me and Mina order our food, Charlotte announces that she'll be paying for both of our meals so we can order more if we want. Taking her up on her offer because I'm really really hungry after what happened in the park, I order two more cheeseburgers. Mina doesn't seem to have very much of an appetite, though.

Once our food's prepared, we take our trays and sit at a table off in the corner of the restaurant... Charlotte gets lots of stares because of the fancy dress she's wearing (does she only ever wear super frilly dresses?), but nobody really bothers us.

The stupidest thing about the Archibald thing is that Irene told him about Cecile, and he still went on about organizations. What the hell was he expecting, her to be recruited in a single day? I can understand the rest but that's just mind-blowingly dumb.

Different target markets, man. Of course rider songs are more badass.

Well, there have been hints, though subtle, that Archibald isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer.
>>
>>32894752
Archibald dun goofed.

Maybe they're just (badly) playing good cop, bad cop.

Or maybe he's just on edge, and just need to approach things from a different angle.

When we get good enough to make light hot enough to burn and divert it from actually burning, we could do some cool stuff by holding the book hostage. They kill or hurt us, we lose control over the light and no more book.

>and of those, the absolute worst way to go is the most likely!
Losing control over your body forever? I can't think of anything more terrible than that and it does seem possible even without outside intervention. We're carrying that danger around until our seed stabilizes.

I think he meant ending up with worst girl.
>>
>>32894951
Worst girl hasn't been introduced yet! Everyone so far is good.

I would bet money on Ms Gauthier being either best or worst girl. Nothing in-between.

Calling it, the main plot that happens a week or so after this Quest ends is all this crap going public.
>>

I'm betting on the hero of the next story getting his power during this quest.

It'll be like Ga-rei Zero vs Ga-rei; this one is about lesbians and stuff, but the next one is about some smelly straight dude and the bitches that love him

>Certain branches lend themselves to making their holders very wealthy, and money is power.
New goal: Find casino and figure out way to use light powers to win at casino foreveer.

So if we had flashbanged and run Archibald would have been attacked by an army of crows? Neat.

[Remove] saved Charlotte from revealing herself. That's nice.
>>
Ask Char if it's normal for their type to call regular people civilians. Irene might have outed herself.
