“And you’re like, actually dating Moriah’s bossy older sister?” you ask Waldric. Things begin to make sense fast. “Ooohhh. You thought I was – and I thought you were – ah, okay, now I get it.”

“You’re going to have to explain this when you’re done with this phone call,” says Rowan from next to you. She leans back and focuses her attention on Reeber the hellhound. He has set up shop in the shade of a big tree and is rolling around wildly, along with his band of canines.

So he thought you were like, threatening Mav or something, and you thought he was like, trying to kill the magister or do something nefarious to his daughter. Well, you think, this is what happens when you try to look smart in front of your demon pals.

“You’re actually friends with Maviel’s awkward kid sister,” Waldric repeats.

“You… already said that,” you say.

“Yes, but it bears repeating. How did this happen?”

>We go to the same school. It’s not like, an impossibility or something.

There will be some overlap with dexterity, strength and close in fighting skills, but knife fighting and sword fighting are still extremely different in terms of technique.

We're passable with swords now, on part with our gunplay. Languid must have just updated the pastebin.
>>

I don't think it's even knife fighting, it's just twirling the knife around and stabbing the table between her fingers and stuff.

I wonder if the entire Crowther family knows about supernatural stuff or if it's just the dad.

I dunno, but I'd be surprised if papaC doesn't know something's up with Sierra. He has to know who the Hallows are and Wolfgang probably said which house he dropped Sierra off at.
>>
>>32877336
What are our thoughts about him at the moment? My tentative working theory is that he's a landmaster or something similar, based on the "this house is the treasure" thing. It implies either it or the location it stands on is of fundamental importance.

>>32877362
Figuring out how much he knows about us is a good idea. Best route is probably to ask Isaac what he's told anyone about us. We don't know how common abilities to detect glamours, PP, HP etc. are so we can't really guess at whether we've been made by Mr. Crowther.
>>
>>32877401
I think he's just a mostly regular human who landed himself in a position of power with the system and knows some spells.

“Okay, not to start this whole coy BS stuff again, but I’ll tell you mine if you tell me yours,” you say.

“Fair enough.”

You give Waldric the summary of your friendship with Moriah. “And that’s how the cookie crumbled,” you finish.

“Was that the short version?” asks Waldric. “Because I’ve been watching the clock, and you were talking for ten minutes straight. No input from me at all. I could have walked away, made a salad, and come back, and you would have been none the wiser.”

That kind of takes you off guard. You were just giving him the basics. Right? “Uh. Did you make a salad?”

“I wouldn’t have told you that whole thing if that’s exactly what I did,” says Waldric.

Unless that’s what he wanted you to think. You glower at nothing in particular. Phone conversations suck sometimes, because you like glaring at people. “Well whatever, it was an interesting story, wasn’t it?”

“Yeah. Funky teen drama. Thanks a lot.”

You give a brief, mean laugh. “Like your story’s going to be so much better. Let me guess. You saw her across the club. And where the hell does Maviel and her weirdo family fit in your friends are people who can’t kill you yet theory of social interaction, anyway?”

“In the demon world, you don’t waltz around broadcasting who you are and what you care about,” says Waldric, sounding impatient. “All I know about you is that everything you run into dies violently.”
>>
>>32877597

You chuckle at the thought. “Not the kind of person you’d brag to about your girlfriend, I guess. So, how’d you meet her?”

There’s silence for a second.

“C’mon, I already spilled my guts,” you tease. “Don’t leave me hanging.”

He makes up his mind to talk. “It was at an art gallery,” he says. “I was looking at one of her paintings, and then there she was. And then we had an interesting conversation, and I got her number. The end.”

“Lame,” you say. “So I guess you love her and stuff? That’s kind of sweet.”

“Isn’t it?” Waldric replies blandly. “Not that you’d know what that’s like. Have you ever even been with anyone before?”

Your cheeks flush at the question, and you feel uncomfortably warm. (+4 Stress: 24/100)

>You mean like. Going out with somebody? Because.
>Pfft, yeah, like, yeah of course. What kind of question is that even?

Because if so it would really make game night a lot easier if we weren't trying to tiptoe around that particular elephant with at least one member of the Crowther family.

When we talk with Isaac about informing Dad Crowther, we should also ask him if we should text Wally here to brace for impact in the interests of preventing anybody doing something incredibly stupid.

“That’s a weird thing to ask a seventeen year old girl over the phone,” you say. “Are you hitting on me? Because you already have a girlfriend. Speaking of, does Maviel know you’re a demon?”

“So. She doesn’t?” you ask.

“Did you hear me say those words?”

There’s a bark of laughter from the other end of the phone line. “Does Moriah know you’re hellborn?”

“Yeah, no? Because I’m not dating her?” you say. “And maybe I will tell her. It’s not like it’s the forbidden secret or anything. You’re the one with the intimate long-term relationship deal.”

“Me and Maviel have an understanding,” says Waldric. “Though, I’m sure you can see how this relationship complicates matters. I can’t exactly be Mr. Right when I’m under Meckor’s thumb.”

“So is that the real reason you want him dead?” you ask.

“A part of it at least,” he answers. “The other reasons I’ve told you are true enough. But there’s something else. I believe Meckor’s gone insane.”

A demon going insane. But Meckor sounded pretty damn evil to begin with. You don’t see how he can get worse if he’s already orchestrating human slavery rings, gang wars, and who knows what else. “What’s he done?”
>>
>>32878262

“It’s what he’s going to do,” says Waldric. “Meckor was sent here to die. No one on the other side thought he would actually be able to subdue his fief. Meckor, though, decided to make the best of it. He knew the only way to take control of the territory was through subversion. If the populace didn’t realize he was in control, he would have free reign.”

“So… he decided to be a crime lord?” you ask.

“For starters. But he relied on Nabuth,” Waldric says. “And after that, Cordeliate. They understood how to pull the strings and make things work in the shadows. Meckor is a great leader, but he’s military. He’s not cut out for intrigue on this scale, not without resorting to overt force,” he explains. “Meckor’s lack of subtlety is how he wound up getting sent down here in the first place.”

>Well what’s Meckor’s plan now that everybody important to the old one is dead?

This seems like a reasonable prioritisation. Some could probably be sort-of-merged together, I suppose; what he is kind of relates to his plans, and the reason for hating humans is guaranteed a part of his story.

Eh. He seems to be into some pretty fucked up shit, based on what we saw on the Cordeliate hit. Some of his tamer holdings, though, might be solid leads to toss back to the Bloods. It's never a bad idea to have an organized crime faction liking you.
>>
“Before we get too deep into this,” you say, “what is Meckor even? Is he like, Infernus or…?”

“He’s part Infernus, part Hellion. I’m not quite sure on the exact composition - I didn’t have much time to learn about him before I was compelled to go to Terra. I was kept quite busy at the time,” Waldric says, sounding a little distant.

You have no idea what a Hellion is, but you figure you can find out later. Anyway, if he can’t be subtle, what could he possibly be doing instead? “Well, what’s Meckor’s big brand new plan now that everyone important to the old one is dead?” you ask.

Waldric’s reply is short. “He’s staging an invasion.”

“That… how’s that work?” you ask. You can’t even fathom.

“It doesn’t,” Waldric informs you. “That’s how I know he’s gone insane. If we don’t stop him, everyone is going to die. Not everyone everyone, but the body count would easily be in the tens of thousands.”

>How do you respond?
I’ll be back in an hour. Hopefully less. I’ll keep you informed.

We'll need to get Isaac in on this conversation pretty sharply, or we're never going to stop this before everything goes to shit. Yeah, yeah, demonbane kill demons, but if you're really on the level about all this the worst you have to fear is world-class cold stares interspersed with merciless ribbing over when we can expect your little sparkly babies with Mav.

Probably time to start walking back and getting Ro to call her dad.

Could always ask why he thinks his fear of demonbane is justified...
>>
>>32878639
Isn't that something you should have mentioned sooner?
>>
>>32878961
Somewhat justified prejudice?

Most demons seem to have powers that lend themselves well to violence and manipulation, and many appear to have underlying aggression that makes it easy for them to go bad. Put them in a society of similar individuals that is already in full backstabbing bastard mode, and they will pretty much all turn out as assholes though some will be able to rise above it. Meanwhile, angels have powers and temperaments that tend to push things the other way, and so naturally loathe and fight most demons. With both sides more or less constantly at odds with one another, they aren't really going to have anything other than their own internal propaganda with a light smattering of genuine information as an image of each other.
>>
>>32879040
We just need to start integration programs so they can adjust to our society.
>>
>>32878639
Keep us informed. Il notify the Hallows. Should the Crowthers be informed via Hallows or by other means?
>>
>>32879126
After that you'd start blaming humans for discriminating against them when their ghettos turn into hell on earth...
>>
>>32879138
This is pretty damn important. It warrants trying to get Isaac and Waldric to talk to each other as soon as possible, at least by phone.

>>32879008

This information seems more important than you are. “Man, you’re supposed to lead with this kind of crap!” you shout. (+10 Stress: 34/100)

“That’s right. I’m supposed to play all of my cards when you’re threatening me and those under my protection,” Waldric drones. “You really are terrible at intrigue. Remind me never to let you know anything important, ever again.” Most of that, you think, is sarcasm. Some of it certainly isn’t though.

“You know, this seems like something you need to talk to Isaac about,” you say. You’re never one for telling the teacher about your problems, but if the building was on fire you’d probably mention something in passing, at least.

Also, maybe we should notify Isaac before Wally calls him up? I think that way it will go much more smoothly.

Also tell him to let us give Isaac a quick heads up before he rings him. We should let him know that Waldric seems to be legit, and is also absurdly melodramatic.

>Before I let you go save the world, why’s… what’s Meckor’s deal? Why’s he such an ass?

And of course we'll tell Isaac ASAP that Waldo is gonna call
>>
“He’ll let you,” you promise. “What kind of timetable is Meckor moving on? I mean, I thought I had the rest of the day free, but like, saving the world is more important than going to Best Buy and picking up a laptop.” Really though, a laptop seems like something you need to have. Everyone has one but you. You don’t even know what you would use a laptop for, but you bet it would be great.

“I’m not certain, but sometime soon,” says Waldric. “We have two, three weeks at best. I think he has everything in order on this end, but he’s waiting for his legion to get into position on the other side.”

“How does he have everything in order?” you ask, appalled. “I thought it was hard for you guys to come over here!”

“I don’t know the details of how. He’s keeping the specifics between him and Philostrathus,” Waldric tells you. “Any summoning ritual for that number of demons would take years to set up and days to perform – and it would be a huge production on both sides. He’s found some other way.”

Well that’s not helpful at all. “Before I let you go, why is Meckor such an ass?” you ask, frustrated with everything happening right now. “What’s his deal?”

“He used to be a loyalist general,” says Waldric, his voice filled with bitterness. “Someone people wanted to follow. The man he used to be would kill himself if he knew what he’d become. But that’s beside the point. If we’re going to stop him, I have a call to make.”
>>
>>32880519

“I’ll phone ahead so Isaac knows who’s calling,” you say “Oh – last thing. When you’re talking to Isaac, just… be honest. Like. Please, just no drama or secrets or whatever. You can’t take him seriously once you get to know him. I mean, I didn’t think I could trust him either, but I wound up fine, you know?”

Waldric’s reply is skeptical. “I… really don’t,” he says.

You take a breath. “Look man. Just. Thanks for doing this, Waldric. I mean. I get the feeling this isn’t the safest option for you.”

“Maybe not,” he says, “nut it’s the only option I have.”

Waldric hangs up on you.

Rowan looks over. “Okay, now you tell me what he told you, because from what I heard, we’re in a lot of trouble,” she says.

“I gotta call Isaac first,” you say.

You complete the call and let Isaac know the gist of what’s going on so he doesn’t try to slay the demons when he gets a call from one. After that, you basically lay out Meckor’s plans to Rowan.

“I’m not okay with the current situation,” you say flatly. You really, really aren’t. (+1 Stress: 42/100)
