The curtain falls on one of the most grim and depressing plays you've ever witnessed. You sit in silence for a long moment, looking to the two girls beside you to judge their reactions. Prime is shifting uncomfortably, while tears roll silently down Charme's face. "What kind of monster would write a story like that? Does he hate all lesbians?"

"I think," you try to form a coherent sentence. "I- I think it has something to do with the destructive nature of obsession and refusing to let go?"

Prime shakes her head slowly. "Nah, pretty sure the writer just hates lezzers." Charme blubbers a little, and you reach over to give her a reassuring hug. That pushes her over the edge and she begins weeping quietly onto your shoulder. Her tears infect you as well, and you begin crying right back. Prime rolls her eyes in disgust and makes to leave the theater without you.

Five minutes later, you finally get Charme together enough to leave the theater. You find Prime waiting impatiently outside, the little fairy making a sound of exasperation when she sees the two of you. You glance at Charme and note the puffy red eyes; it's obvious just how much she's been crying over the play. You hope you don't look as bad.

It feels like a sour way to end the day, but it's getting late into the afternoon now, and you feel like you've had about as much fun as a person should on a Sunday. You say as much to the others and they concur. As you begin to walk Prime home, she speaks up.

"Hey, Recette. Uh. Thanks. For today, I mean. Mistress don't let me get out all that much, so this was- it was nice." The awkward look on her face tells you she really didn't want to have to say that to you, and even now she looks like she wants to tear the words back and insult you instead.

"Ehehe. Don't mention it," you tell her. "I can always make time for friends, so if you want to do it again somet-"

She cuts you off with a derisive snort, "ha. I never said I wanted to be your friend. Let's keep it to one day, huh? An' ya don't need to walk me home, I'm a big girl."

"Not the term I'd use," Charme mutters, earning a glare from Prime.

"Charme!" You admonish her, "that's not nice." She grumbles an apology, you turn back to Prime. "Well, I want to be your friend and that's not going to change. If you ever want to have more fun, you know where I'll be!"

Prime shrugs off your offer. "Whatever, laters." She flutters away up the hill towards the mansion. You would almost swear there was a merry sway to her flight, but you know better. You shake the thought off and start up the hill back to the shop.

As you walk together in the warm afternoon sun, Charme sighs contentedly. "I never expected to find this here, you know? Somewhere I can go to after the day's out, and know that there's people I don't hate waiting to welcome me."

You frown, trying to word an answer to her when her eyes sharpen, looking dead ahead. "Hold up," she murmurs at you from the side of her mouth.

You look up, and ahead, standing in the shade of an alleyway, a rough-looking man stands watching the townsfolk wander idly by him on their way home. He seems to be intently examining each of them in turn.

"Charme? Is something up with him?"

She grunts, pulling you to one side of the road. "That look," she comments, "he's looking for something. Or someone. Can't imagine it's anything pleasant."

"Wha- You can't just say that about people, Charme!"

She doesn't answer, but simply glares at the man. "I'm gonna take him down," she says simply at last.

Charme struggles a little, "I disagree. He clearly deserves it."

"Noooooo~! Listen, just. Stop it!" You pin her arms to her side and tell her your own plan. "I'm going to go ask him if he wants help. Worst case? He's shifty and you stab him. Any other case? He doesn't deserve being stabbed. Okay?"

Chame quits struggling, apparently agreeing to your terms.
You let her go, and take a few paces towards the man. He's so fixated on the passers by that he doesn't even notice you.
"Ano, Sir? Can I help you with something?"

He almost jumps out of his skin at your address, both hands flying into the air. "Oho, hey there girly." He cracks a broad smile. "Nah, I'm just waiting here for someone. I was hoping they were gonna come this way. Don't worry about it. Thanks for the offer though!"

"Really?" You keep your voice free of suspicion, sounding like the helpful little girl you aren't. "Who are you waiting for, what do they look like?" He pales a little at your questioning.

"Ah, well. You see, uhh."
He starts to reach for his back pocket, and in that moment you can feel Charme's presence already moving in for the kill. You're about to scream for her to move when the man suddenly looks up at an old lady wandering along the road towards you. "Ah, there she is!"
He side-steps around you, jogging down the street to meet her. You follow at a little distance, curious to the exchange.

"Excuse me ma'am," he calls out to the lady. "I think you dropped this!" From his back pocket, he pulls a small coin purse, positively fit to bursting with pix.

The old lady's eyes widen at the sight. "Oh my, yes. I've been searching high and low for it. Where did you find it, m'boy?"

He smiles as he hands the purse to her. "Heh, well I saw you drop somethin' at the market and just checked it out. Found this under one of the stalls. You'd already disappeared in the crowd though, so I couldn't find you. Sorry it took me so long to get it back to you!"

After a few more words of thanks, the old lady takes her leave and the man turns to you. "Heheh, sorry about that. Where were we? Oh, I haven't even introduced myself yet! I'm Elan."

"Wow, I thought you were kinda scary, but you're pretty nice, mister!"

His smile strains a little, "scary? Really..?"

You continue on with your introduction, ignoring his apparent pain at your statement. "It's nice to meet you, Elan! I'm Recette, owner of Recettear. The item shop up this hill."

His eyes light up a little. "Ah, I've heard about that place. I was thinking of giving it a visit some time."

You beam at his words. "You totally should! And since you're such a nice person, giving that purse back, I'm going to give you a discount! 10%!"

He blushes, "that's real nice of you. It wasn't anything, really. Anyone would've done the same, right?"

"I wouldn't," Charme answers helpfully for you. Your enthusiasm deflates a little.

"A-anyway, you should stop by whenever you next get the chance. We'd love to see you again."

"Heheh," he cracks the smile again, "you got it! Next time I get the chance."

He heads off down the road, leaving you and a awkwardly fidgeting Charme. "Yayifications! I got a new customer!"

"Uh huh," Charme says, "one I would've stabbed on principle of looking shifty if you hadn't stopped me. Ugh, I'm such a berk."

"Don't worry about it," you tell her as you reach the front of your store at last. "I'm here to stop you, right?" You smile as you open the door and shout a greeting to Tear. You're greeted instead by the sight of Euria wearing an apron waving the two of you into the back room.

"Welcome home~! It was getting late, so I made food for everyone!"

Hey, guys, I had an idea:

We offer micro-loan for adventurers. Starting an adventurer career cost a lot, and since their basically risking their life for petty cash, the banks are unlikely to give them money.

So, we offer to finance adventurers, against a cut of the profit and a huge interest rate.

We can earn a pretty penny, that way.

You hop across the room and pull her into a quick hug. "Thank you, Euria! I bet it tastes great!" She smiles warmly back, gesturing for you to go ahead. Charme follows you in, looking curiously at the food presented. It's a full meal, sporting a chicken breast, salad and greens, potatoes and a jug of warm gravy in the middle of the table.

You take your place at one of the plates, Charme beside you. Euria takes off the apron and sits across from you. Then you notice there are only three spaces. "Wait, where's Tear's?"

"Ah. She went out," Euria states blandly. "For business matters. She ate first and said she'd be back late. We can eat without her."

"O-oh." You feel a little disappointed that your fairy friend isn't joining you, but you start on the food regardless. It tastes... good. Not as good as you'd have made, but it's certainly edible, unlike Tear's food! The chicken's been left in the pan too long, losing some of its flavor, while the peas are a little too mushy for your tastes. The gravy is fantastic, you suspect even better than yours! You consider trading tips with her at some point.

The table is unusually quiet as you eat, Charme focusing solely on chewing down the food while Euria seems fixated on you.

"Thanks, I was... worried you wouldn't like it."

You look her in the eye when she trails off. "So, is there something you wanted to talk about?"

She looks away for a moment, then turns back again. "I was just curious what set-up you have exactly with Miss Tear. I mean, she seems like, well. She's like my old Boss. Mafia. And she's disappearing most nights to go and do /something/ out there, which I reckon it's to do with the turf war that's been all over the city. I guess it's just, besides the whole ruthless murdering thing, you don't seem like the sort to get involved with them."

Charme has stopped eating to listen to the conversation now. Her face is unreadable. Euria glances at her, then back to you. "And you don't exactly have the most normal of social circles, either."

When he couldn't make it up, they," you pause, trying to tell the story without picturing the jerking of his legs underneath the rope, "hanged him in front of me. Then set me to work for them." An uneasy look crosses Euria's face, one that tells of knowing the sort of cruelty the men you'd met could deal out. "Tear turned up a year later and told me they've got this place for me to run to make money back faster. I'm actually really lucky, Mr. Terme is being super generous with me." Charme lets out a low growl at that, but says nothing. Her eyes are still fixed on Euria, assessing her reaction.

Euria asks one question. "How much?"

"Twenty five million." Charme's lip curls in disgust, while Euria goes deathly pale.

"H-how? How can one man get that much debt? How can you possibly pay that off?"

You smile confidently at her, "with hard work and loyal friends, of course!"
Euria has no answer to that, and falls into quiet, uneasy contemplation.

"So... now you know," you summarize. "Do you still want to work for me? You're free to leave if you want."

"What?" Euria seems genuinely shocked at the question. "No. No, working for you is way better than what I was doing. It's just, it sucks is all. That you're in mafia debt. No-one should have to be like that."

You smile your thanks at her before changing the topic. You tell Euria what she missed while she was out, about the trip around town. About the great cake, and the fun of watching the fighting pits, and how even someone like Prime had fun. "You should come with us next time we go!"

Euria nods eagerly. "Yeah, sounds like fun! Definitely."

After finishing up the food, it's already grown dark out. Euria yawns, telling you she's heading to bed. Charme waits until she's clear. "So, what're we doing about Tear?"

"Eh? What do you mean?"

"Well, she's clearly up to something. You don't want to go bring her home? Or at least find out what she's doing this late at night?"

You protest, "you're too suspicious, Charme. Tear's just busy with private stuff. She'll be home later and it'll be fine."

Charme just shrugs. "And if we're curious, we can ask her about it then, right?" Again, a shrug. "Right. Now I'm going to bed. Are you coming?"
Without waiting for an answer, you head upstairs and go to sleep.

Morning comes far sooner than you'd like. The moment you feel the sun on your face through the window, you roll to the side to dodge the boot inevitably coming for your face. It doesn't land. Once more, you've managed to wake up of your own accord with Tear still fast asleep in her cot. Euria and Charme are both absent from the house. You quickly cook up some scrambled eggs and bring the plate upstairs to Tear. She's still fast asleep when you place the plate beside her bed. "Tear? Tear, it's morning!"
She doesn't move.
You spend a few more long moment watching her sleep, her tiny chest rolling up and down with steady breathing. Your eyes linger even longer on her wing tips. The faint memory of the tingling proves too much, and you find yourself gently running your fingers along the outline of her wingtips. The fine layer of glitter comes off on your fingers again, and you can feel a warm tingling spreading down your fingers.
Tear lets out a contented moan, rustling a little but not waking up. You bring your other hand around and begin gently stroking her other wing. The tingling grows warmer and warmer in both hands as you cover your fingers in her dust. You let out a quiet sigh.
This is apparently enough to wake Tear, as she suddenly leaps to her feet, batting your hands away.

"WHAT HAVE I TOLD YOU ABOUT MY WINGS NOT BEING YOUR PLAYTHING!?"

"Morning, Tear~!" You greet her as if nothing out of place had just been going on. "I'm opening the store now, I thought you might like some breakfast!"

The fairy fumes as you stand up and leave the room. "I refuse to be treated like some pet that you can just abuse when you feel like it. I am a valued fairy, one of Terme's best- HEY where are you going!?"
You're already out the door and half way down the stairs to open the store for the morning.

After a few minutes of waiting, your first customer arrives. The give with the scary huge fists walks confidently up to the store front, then stands for a long, long time outside. Just staring through the window at you.
You wave to her, and at last she enters the store. "Good morning, uh... Sorry, I just realized we never introduced ourselves! My name's Recette. I own this store. What's your name?"

She stares at you for a few moments before uttering a word. "Arma."

"Arma? Is that your name?"

"Affirmative."

"Huuu. Nice to meet you, Arma! Was there anything I could help you with today?"

"I have come to acquire... a weapon."

>How do you respond?
>>
>>32857656
Start offering our most expensive weapons.

I don't think we have very expensive weapons.
>>
>>32857656
"Well, you name it, I'll see what I can do. An hammer, perhaps? You seems like the kind of girl that can lift and smash effortlessly, without even noticing the decrease in speed"
>>
>>32857656
>How do you respond?

Okay. What kind of weapon did you have in mind?
>>
>>32857656
well ask her what kind of weapon she is looking for and then see if we have any in stock
>>
fyi, the only weapons we have in stock is an iron spear and longsword.
>>
>>32857656
"Well, you name it and I'll see what I can do! What sort of weapon are you looking for?"

Her brow furrows in thought for a moment, then she answers simply: "A sturdy weapon."

You nod. "Let me see what we have... ah, here." You produce a sturdy longsword. If you remember correctly, this one was forged by the local blacksmith, who sold it to the Guildmaster at discount before you got it from him. Should be worth just over a thousand pix, so it's not the most excellent of weapons, but it would put up with most combat.

You hand it to the emotionless girl, who takes it in one hand, raises it above her head, and before you can protest she brings it hammering down onto her glove.

The blade shatters on contact, leaving a stump attached to the hilt while the rest clatters onto the store floor.

>??
>>
>>32857706
Don't get angry at her, it's just a thousand pix compared to what we've already sold to her.

"I'm afraid we're rather lacking in weapons at the moment."
>>
>>32857706
"I'm affraid you'll have to pay for this, miss. But at least now I understand what you meant by "strudy". Here, try this."
>Show her the Golden Pedestal
>>
>>32857723
Dude, the Golden Pedestal in our inventory could be made into a weapon for someone as strong as her. Or she'll break it and we'll get the money anyway.
>>
>>32857730
Seconding asking her to pay for the broken sword, explain to her if need by the whole 'break it you buy it' issue.
>>
>>32857730

That's ballsy. I won't support it, but I won't vote against it either.
>>
>>32857706

We could perhaps ask her if she could test the strength of the weapons in such a way that won't deform it or break it or otherwise make it so that it is unsellable to other potential customers.
>>
>>32857766
Only if she pays for the broken item as well, you can't let people breaking our stuff get off lightly.
>>
>>32857754
Now, we just need to have the local blacksmith solder an iron girder to the pedestal and it would be a marvelous club

You sigh at the mess. "I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you to buy that sword now," you tell her apologetically.

She stares at you uncomprehendingly. "It is not sufficient."

"No," you confirm," "I can see that. But now it's broken I can't sell it to anyone else, can I?"

"...Understood. How much?"

"One thousand," you tell her.

"Acceptable." She reaches to her belt and pulls a purse full of coins, dropping it on the counter.

I'm not joking, though

>>32857786

>>
>>32857843
Well then, gold pedastal on a girder would be wonderfully dangerous, but would snap after a couple of swings, especially if Arma swung it.

A steel mace/hammer with a gold CORE though, THERE's a fine(and expensive) weapon.

"Listen, that was the best weapon I had in stock. But if you give me some time, I might be able to find something more suitable to your needs!"

"Understood. I shall return... tomorrow."

That doesn't leave you a lot of time. You make to protest, but she's already turned away and marched out of the store. You sigh. She's not proving to be an easy customer to deal with. Still, a sale's a sale, and an order's an order.
You make a note to get a sturdy weapon as soon as possible, and sit back at the counter waiting your next customer.

joke aside, I always wondered what a gold-core mace would do as damage.

Or, what would happen if you fill a steel hammer head with mercury, but not completly, so the liquid would shift inside it as it moves. A wonderfuly unbalanced weapon, but, boy, what damages it could do

Actually, I think we can improvise a sturdier weapon out of the pedastal if we have it custom-ordered:

>Drill holes into bottom of pedastal
>Pocket excess gold
>Heat and insert steel/iron rods into each hole
>Connect all the rods to a base with handle

It'll dent really easily, but with only a day to work this out, I think this is the best we can do.
>>
>>32857950
If the head doesn't shatter or deform when striking then you'll basically get the mass of the mercury * the force you're striking with added to the overall damage you would've normally done.

In reality there's too much bullshit involving fluid mechanics for me to figure it out right now.

What the hell does stroking the fairy wings do? So far as I can tell it involves 'tinglies' for both stroker and strokee.
>>
>>32858013
From the original setting, stroking fairy wings transfers more fairy dust on you.

Fairy dust has a draintouch effect on monster blood, and is a component for magic spells.

If you lose too much fairy dust, the fairy will die. It seems that properly trained fairies know how to limit dust loss, though. There are also cases of over-exposure to fairy dust, causing comas.

Within quest, it's PROBABLY much less important.
>>
>>32858013
>What the hell does stroking the fairy wings do?
Gets fairy dust all over your fingers. Fairy dust is basically pure magic in powder form.
Oh, by the way. Fairy dust is like. Super toxic. It causes sickness, memory loss, and eventually death.
And that's canon.

>>
>>32858237
Only Charme would get drunk enough to try it.

>>32858222
Recette actually has a good head on her shoulders in this quest, so she should realize the symptoms of fairy dust intoxication are bad when she feels them and stop before it's too late.

>>32858224
Chante and Elise live for 2 years with unrestrained fairy dust leakage and very close physical contact. Unless you deliberately try to kill yourself, it's not likely to happen.

>>32858257
fairies must be harmless and endearing. They must never appear threatening, nor give others cause to exterminate them. They must ALWAYS follow their training.

>>
>>32858432
>what if someone was murdered via fairy poisoning?
If I understand things correctly, fairy dust is poisonous somewhere between lead and mild radioactivity. It sounds like a terrible way to poison someone.
>>
As long as you aren't ingesting it somehow, you should only get the tingly skin out of it. It's not like Recette is going to snort magic out of Tear's backside to dull the pain. She has friends for that.
>>
>>32858432
But the fairies are very careful to appear as good, constructive members of human society (because otherwise GENOCIDE). So they'll probably perform anal rape with all the trees of their enchanted forest on anyone trying to sell fairy dust as poison.

Well that's assuming law enforcement in Pensee can even detect such a thing. Unless the symptoms are radically different from other poisons, that's going to be difficult to do without using magic or some technological means of analyzing the contents of a persons blood, I think? But if they could, there aren't actually a lot of fairies in Pensee, right? We basically know of Tear and Prime, and both seem to act as if they were the only fairy around at all. They probably aren't, but there can't be a lot, and how many of those are actually engaged in shady dealings? Terme isn't exactly some shadow organization nobody knows about, and people around town certainly know Tear. So that's a pretty obvious suspect.

And the rival gang moving in on Terme's territory, that's controlled by Alouette's family, right? And they just so happen to have access to a fairy, AND already have Recette on the radar after that whole incident that got blood and corpses and shit on our floor. And if they start investigating, they can probably figure out quite a bit about her relationship with Terme and how, for no apparent reason, he's actually entrusting her with an entire store, leading them to believe that the old man actually cares about her, making her an even more obvious target for his rivals.

So all in all, it's a framing waiting to happen! Let's not tell Kaleun though, okay?
>>
>>32858731
>And the rival gang moving in on Terme's territory, that's controlled by Alouette's family, right?

No

>So all in all, it's a framing waiting to happen!

See >>32858556. Fairies would never let something like that happen. The were nearly driven to extinction because humans thought they were too mischievous. Imagine what would happen if they found out they were toxic?
>>
>>32858828
You're implying the fairies have a level of control an supervision so high, at this point they'd be strongly considering making Recette "disappear" just for the fact that she's even curious about Tear's wings at all.

I can keep doing this. Do you wish to continue the game regardless?
