Okay, we'll get the ball rolling here and try to make some small talk. Also, some good news. Since I now have semi-regular hours, we can safely pick up a thread the next day if it gets too late. Gotta love 8 hour workdays.

All of this is is really neat and everything, but when are you going to get your comic book collection back? You're not even getting your monthly Heartbeat: Darkness any more, it's getting snatched up by Chief before you can even touch it!

"I'll return them when I'm finished. Right now, there's a story arc where it's come to light that Lulu has been engaged to another man by her father!" Chief gets starry eyed and claps her hands, "But Lito won't stand for it! He's going to their palace in the stars right now to put an end to that wedding! Their love is so pure and precious!"

Yeah, but if you know that comic, it probably came with a bunch of skin shots.

"S-so what if there was? It's healthy to be interested in...in that sort of thing! Besides, you were looking at them long before I was."

Chief produces her riding crop from behind her chair and slaps it on the desk. She's been a lot more aggressive about defending her tastes lately. You're not sure if that's a good thing or not, so you decide to just keep your mouth shut and change the subject.

"Tuition? No, you won't have to pay anything. Think of the Academy more like a cram school. You'll still be attending your normal classes in addition to these special courses. As for what they are...well, it may be best to see it for yourself. Claire went through the same program, after all, so I'm sure you can see how effective they are."

Claire's state of mind doesn't exactly fill you with confidence about the program's effectiveness. You close the folder and grumble. Last thing you needed was another place to be every day...

Starting next year, she will be doing instruction at the Academy, but for now we thought it was best that she get used to civilian life again."

All's well that ends well, you suppose. You get up, thinking that you need to return home yourself and tell Chief that you're leaving.

"Oh? Very well, then. I shall see you in a few hours. I must complete my paperwork and oversee a few administrative duties. Do make sure that Claire hasn't been overworking herself seeing to your house and home. I worry about her."

You dismiss her words with a wave and leave the office. You said you were going straight home, but you'd rather take a walk and try to calm yourself down. Ever since those attacks a while back, you've always been jumpy. You feel like there's always someone over your shoulder, watching you.

You've been waiting in this god forsaken line at the ice cream shop for twenty minutes now, and you haven't even gotten inside the door yet! Not to mention that there's nothing but sweaty, overweight guys in strange oufits today. What gives? Did the nerd convention get let out early or something?

What? You turn to see a mountain of blubber and fat somehow speaking to you. A pink shirt with the letters P.P stitched in is stretched across his massive girth and his hair is pulled back into a greasy ponytail. He extends a cheese-stained hand and smiles.

"I'm Johnny Jellison, Member Number One of the Pretty Purgatory Fanclub. We all came from the first annual PurFes for the lottery here."

Prepur? Does he mean Rin and Angel? You know that they were getting more and more famous around town, but you didn't think that they were holding publicity events for themselves. You decline shaking his hand and ask about the lottery.

"Oh yeah, the lottery is for an amazing prize! The chance to eat a parfait with Angel and Devil! Isn't that so exciting! I was blown away when Angel told us that she'd be holding this contest."

...You think you need to have a word with those two later on. You sigh and shake your head. This line is going to take forever. Are you sure you just want to wait around? You're pretty sure you could muscle your way in if you wanted.

PurFes? You're pretty sure you can guess but-

"Purgatory Festival! A whole bunch of fans just like me found each other online and all agreed to meet up and share our love for Prepur! There were games, singing, lots of food and music, and we all brought our own fanworks together to share. Look what I managed to get!"

Jellison reaches behind him and pulls a bright pink fanny pack out. He zips it open with his clumsy, pudgy fingers and pulls out a small book. It's a comic by the looks of it, and you see a stylized depiction of Rin and Angel on the cover.

"This is a fully colored, self-published work by the same comic artist of Heartbeat: Darkness! He's a huge fan too, believe it or not. He sold a whole truckload of these today!"

You flip open the book. Yes, there's no doubt. You'd recognize this art anywhere. But there's just a few things wrong with how he's portraying the two of them. For one, Rin is a little more scatterbrained and for another, Angel is just a little bit *bigger* than that. You flip the page and suddenly decide you're done reading the book for today. In fact, you think it would be best if nobody ever saw these books.

"Oh, I get you. You're one of those kind who likes em pure. That's fine! That's good! But, uh, how do you know about Angel's bust?"

No comment.

You turn around and realize it's finally your turn to go through the entrance. You place your hand on the door and suddenly feel yourself hesitate. Do you really want to go in there, knowing what kind of strange event is going on? You could just walk away, pretend you never saw any of this, and then vent your disgust on Claire when you get home.

I need to pick up the pace some

There's no sense in backing out now. You throw open the door and head inside. The ice cream shop is utterly packed with nerds. There's practically no standing room anymore, and the normally pristine white tile that covers the floor is smeared with the dirt and sweat of its patrons. The staff look stressed and overworked, handing out ice cream floats and cones to the various customers, all of which are carrying a large ticket in their hands. As you step through the threshold, you are handed a ticket of your own, numbered 93, and you're pushed into the crowd. As you struggle to find a place where you aren't rubbing elbows with the unwashed masses, you find a velvet rope sectioning off part of the shop. Glancing over it, you see Angel and Rin chatting away at their own table. Next to them is a box stuffed with paper, and you can assume that's how they're going to decide on which of these repulsive creatures to share some ice cream with. You try to turn away before they notice you, but before you can take a few steps back you hear Angel call out over the crowd.

"Cerberus? Is that you, my esteemed companion?"

You grimace and turn back to them. You put a finger to your lips and try to shush them, but Angel just responds by waving and calling out to you. You start to hear some nasty grumbling from the crowd so you decide it might be for the best that you respond to her before the situation is made worse.

You try to tell her that you were just getting a snack, but you feel Rin staring at the ticket in your hand. Before you can say anything, Rin has pulled Angel over and whispered something in her ear.

Angel picks up the box of tickets and fishes around for a few seconds. Yanking her chosen ticket out, she reads out the winner with excitement.

"And the winner is number ninety-three! Thank you all very much for coming!"

Angel and Rin pull you inside the safety of the velvet rope and sit you down at their table. As Angel puts away the lottery, you see that the ticket she pulled was actually number 17. Looks like they were feeling as creeped out as you were...

As a heads up, we will have to split the thread between tonight and tomorrow. Like I said, though, that's okay because my hours aren't all midnight shifts and they're regular.

"The Academy?"

You take a bite of the three foot tall parfait in front of you, utterly covered in whipped cream and sweet fruits. It's much, much sweeter than you would have liked (you tend to like mild flavors like vanilla) but it hits the spot well enough. Rin and Angel occasionally dip their spoons out and take a small portion, but it seems like you'll be eating the majority of this.

"Of course I went to the rooms of time and space, Cerberus. They were wonderful places where the strong gather to become stronger. You are already quite the impressive beast, Cerberus. Do you require more power for some purpose," Angel gets a devious look in her eyes, "Have you finally decided to protect Claire, instead of her always minding you?"

You frown and tell them that Chief has decided you must go as part of your probation. You're not really looking forward to more boring classes.

"S-sir, while the Academy does have some technical courses it's mostly, um, practical things...Like running and physical training and," Rin whispers,"Learning to control your powers...Not that you need help."

"Much of what they teach you is how to control your inner desires! It is not unlike the spiritual training that I receive at the Divine Prison which I must attend daily. You will be taught on how to curb your perverse hungers. Though, it may make your mate less than happy now that you'll be able to resist her advances."

You're resisting plenty already, but it will be nice to have some instruction on how to curb your Impulse. It does seem like Claire doesn't suffer from Renegade Impulses like you do. Angel giggles and puts her spoon down.

"Does it seem that way to you? From the way I see it, you indulge her Impulse quite regularly. It's probably not good to let her feast that often, Cerberus."

You've never seen Rin exhibit any truly dangerous behaviour, but you'll take her word on it. You know all too well that Impulses can be a frightening thing to experience, so if she wants to get hers under control, you can understand. For that matter, Rin is making a very good point. You've been having trouble with your own Impulse for some time now. As much as it pains you to admit it, maybe you had better seek some help from experts on the matter.

"Yes! I mean...you seem fine, sir, but it can be a good thing to be extra sure, right?"

Especially with that strange Doctor running around. You just barely were able to hold onto yourself the last time. Maybe, just maybe, if you can learn some new tricks, the next time you meet will be different...But that's in the future. You've got to head back to your house for now. Looks like you're going to have a lot of long days ahead in the future, and you've been keeping Claire waiting for a while now. Last time you were out this long she decided to hide in the shower...

You decide that you'd like to explore this place a little better, since it has caught you completely by surprise. You start aimlessly wandering around, taking in the sights as you do so. It has its own police, its own stores, and what looks like its own currency. People loiter around, idly chatting about various things, trying on clothes and testing out gadgets. You couldn't get more plain if you tried, which makes it stand out like a sore thumb.

Claire hooks her arm in yours and leads you through the front doors. The corridors are filled with students, both young and old, all hurrying to classrooms. Lockers line the green and white tiled floors, and there's a general air of relaxation and, you dare say, happiness. For a place that's all about keeping insanity at bay, there's not an ounce of seriousness to the place. Or there isn't until you hear a voice call out.

"Battle Doll? What are you doing back here?"

A young man stands in front of you, with his black hair slicked back. A long, dark blue coat hangs off his shoulders, and you see a patch bearing the UGN's logo on his shoulder Clear blue eyes flick back and forth between you and Claire before he crosses his arms and leans against the wall.

"Ah, Azure, it is good to see that you are still well. It was only a short time ago that I was your senior here at the Academy. How goes your lessons?"

"They're fine," He focuses on you, staring you down, "So who's this loser? Another Illegal you caught?"

Loser? You're not the guy wearing a heavy coat in the Pacific Islands. He frowns but remains silent.

"Darling, this is Azure Piercing, one of the juniors I helped to train. Azure, this is Wild Card, my future husband."
