You are Captain WILLIAM PIERCE, a combat rescue officer of the United States Air Force.

You've currently just been dropped off at the temporary US base in Okinawa, Japan. Apparently, from what you gather, you're here to assist the Japanese in the Pacific front. The moment you stepped off the plane, however, you're greeted by a Japanese witch. She gives you a crisp, nearly flawless salute, which you kindly return.

"You are Captain Pierce, I presume?" The witch asks in very good English. Not surprising, since most witch academies taught English as a basic requirement.

"That's right." You nod. "And I have the pleasure of addressing...?"

"Major Takefuji Chikami, Imperial Japanese Army Air Corps." The witch grins.

"Ma'am." You stiffen on instinct upon realizing she was higher ranking than you were.

"Please, you don't have to be so formal with me." Takefuji chuckles. "You can just call me by my nickname, 'Jetstream', if it makes you feel more comfortable."

Heya guys! Artist who did the OP image here. (Which I'm still both super hyped and honored to have that be the OP image) I decided to draw more art for it.

Pictured is Pierce and his harem- I mean witches. I also decided to make a unique variant of the official 1989 Logo just for PJ Witches, so I hope nobody minds.

Thanks again for running Merc. Oh and also,

"Jetstream?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Something of an honorary title, actually." Jetstream sighs nostalgically. "Any witch that holds the speed record at our academy is given that title, though, it sounds much more impressive in our native tongue."

"I see." You nod. "And I assume you're in charge?"

"Oh, no! In terms of tactical command, that would be you!" She says, patting you on the shoulder. "One of the caveats your Colonel Kelsey imposed. American officers in his unit will always have command authority."

"Ah." You nod. "I hope that doesn't bother you or anything."

"Oh, I'm not bothered at all! I'm just eager to get back in the fight."

At that moment, a humvee rolls up, and an airman pokes his head out of the driver's seat window.

"Captain Pierce? We're here to take you to see Colonel Kelsey. It's an urgent matter."

"But my unit-"

"Don't worry, I'll give them the full orientation!" Jetstream says, pushing you toward he humvee. Go on!"

You sigh and take a seat in the humvee. As you look out, you can see Jetstream already moving ahead to greet your witches and air crew. You sit patiently in the back as the humvee weaves through taxiing planes and opposing traffic jockeying for open lanes. It almost reminded you of the massive troop buildup back at Ramstein. Finally, the humvee parks next to what appears to be a mobile command trailer. You see entire teams of technicians scurrying about, connecting power lines and setting up communication equipment. The driver leads you past them and into the trailer proper, where you see Colonel Kelsey himself, sitting a portable desk that looks far too small under the mountains of paperwork it was buried under.

"Pierce. Good to see you're still alive." Kelsey chuckles. "How was Europe?"

"It was... eventful." You say, not quite sure how much you were allowed to tell him.

"Well, I understand it must have been hectic. How has Rachel been doing?" He asks.

"She's doing fine. She's an excellent witch and PJ." You say unambiguously. "Honestly, if it weren't for her, I don't think I"d be standing here right now."

"Yes, I heard about that incident." Kelsey nods. "Good to now Rachel's found her place."

"She IS a bit too eager to slice things up, though." You admit.

"Well, I trust that you can reign her in." Kelsey grins and digs through the mountain of paperwork. "Anyways, as you can see, things are rather busy for me."

"Frankly speaking sir, you could have just stayed Alaska."

"And miss all this?" Kelsey laughs. "Not a chance!"

You suspect Red and her uncle were more alike than you initially thought.

"Anyways, I can bore you with details on this new unit we're forming, or if you've got the itch, we can start putting you on operations right away. Lord knows, my Japanese counterparts are continually pestering me to loan them assets." Kelsey motions to the paperwork.

"I'd like to hear this." You say, leaning back in your seat.

"Well, as you were probably informed of already, I'm now in charge of the 92nd Joint Airlift Wing." Kelsey says.

"I haven't heard of a unit like that." You frown.

"Because it's the first of its kind." Kelsey nods. "Lessons we've learned in both Alaska and Europe have shown us that the dominance of witches in air to air combat has plateaued, or has even begun to decline. Witches currently are having trouble keeping up with the latest next generation fighters. Some Air Force planners have decided to implement a role shift for air witches, from air superiority to support."

"The matrons can't be happy with that at all."

"Of course they aren't." Kelsey shook his head. "But even they can see what's on the horizon too, so they grudgingly agreed to creation of this unit."

"What convinced them?"

"A lot of lobbying, but your work has had its effect, too. You've shown that witches can be extremely effective when working in tandem with rotary wing craft. That's really what this unit is formed for, witches supporting tactical and strategic airlift efforts."

"Sounds ambitious." You nod. "What about Major Chikami? What does she have to do with this?"

"Well, the IJA is always looking for a way to get ahead of the IJN. They see joint airlift as a way to gain an edge." Kelsey explains. "Major Chikami is here to observe your unit in action and support you in combat. As such she has no command authority over you. You will treat her as a specialist."

"Got it." You nod.

"Anything else you need to know?" Kelsey asks.

Now I am starting to see why the Matrons are more looking at Merlin than Frank. The matrons are realizing the witches will become obsolete as they are. They need the next power level up of witches to remain the top of the power structure of the world. They see Merlin just as that now. Maybe they are studying her to reproduce her ability in other witches or see if a new generation of witches are about to be born.
>>
>>32811966
Oh yeah for sure I can see some of them there but I imagine with the move from front to more support that number will only grow for the them.
>>
>>32811816
That's different and I'm sure there is witches that jump out of perfectly good airplanes for a living. The part I'm trying to figure out is the strategic airlift side of things, I mean tell me if I'm wrong but that implies cargo planes transporting supplies great distances. I'm mean sure stick a witch in a integration suite in a C-17 and you get what, shields? Sticking them in strikers would be foolish since witches don't have the range, again I could be wrong and it's the lack of sleep talking.

>>
>>32811602
"I'd like to get a sitrep on the current conflict. I've been out of the loop for a bit." You say.

"Understandable." Kelsey nods. "Basically, ever since China declared war, Japan's been spread thin. They current have forces holding Kamchatka, which is denies the Russians an effective staging point in the Pacific. However, they're also split with defending Korea and Formosa, and ever since that surprise attack on Tokyo, they've been shoring up their defenses at home as well. Simply put, they're stretched thin."

"So what's going on in Formosa and Korea?"

"China is keeping a close eye on Formosa, and keeping the garrison there from venturing out too far. However, they haven't made any moves. Korea is a different story, though. They've taken half the peninsula, and pretty much half the population has defected to their side, as well. The propped up a puppet ruler, some freedom fighter named Sung or something, and are currently assembling a North Korean People's Liberation Army."

"And what's Japan been doing?"

"They're just barely holding the line. While the IJA has the bulk of their forces in Korea, they're heavily dependent on the Korean Self Defense Force to fill the gaps. You can understand why they'd want some help."

"Anderson told me Korea was stalemated."

(cont)
>>
>>32811989
I get the feeling that after the martian war tech wasn't so heavily invested in witch stuff compared to land stuff, which wouldn't be surprising if it was an intentional move by male military brass.
>>
>>32812136
"It is. China's got the army, but we and Japan got the navy. China can't really project power off the coast, but neither we nor the Japanese have any stomach to hit the Chinese mainland. That means Korea is going to be the lynchpin of the Pacific theater. Whoever controls Korea wins the conflict. That's a lot of resources and national pride on the line."

"I see." You nod.

"Anyways, I wanted you to start off slow. Get stationed up in Tokyo and handle some basic SAR duties. We got a lots of ships and birds moving around, and accidents are bound to happen."

"I assume the Japanese want something different?"

"The Japanese want to throw you into the Korean meatgrinder. Truth be told, that's probably the place that needs assistance the most, but I don't want to send you in there before you can get your bearings.

You pause to think about it. While hopping on a transport bird would undoubtedly be much, MUCH faster, it's felt like it's been forever seen you've actually flown in your own bird. "And we do." Kelsey nods. "We'll get the mechanics to get your helo assembled and ready to go by the morning."

"We're done here for now." Kelsey continues. "The airman outside will lead you to your quarters. Temporary, since you'll only be here for the night, so please bear with it."

"Not the first time I had to deal with less than ideal circumstances."

"You witches might say otherwise." Kelsey chuckles. "I'm getting all sorts of hell from the witches, both Navy and Air Force, over how they're being forced to sleep in tents."

"Not MY witches." You say confidently. "They'll probably be better for the experience anyways."

"Actually, let's stop by our quarters for a bit, and then we'll head to the O-Club." You say.

"Sure thing, sir." The airman nods and fires up the humvee.

As Kelsey had told you before, your quarters are pretty modest. It's a simple row of tents among a larger row of tents. However, you honestly weren't expecting much better. At least it was something over your head.

You then see Janice standing outside one of the tents and you motion for the airman to stop the humvee.

"Hey, Janice." You say, stepping out of the humvee for a second. ""Where are the others?"

"Red's already asleep. Tarin's keeping an eye on her. Poor thing just can't seem to get used to the jet lag." Janice smiles. "The air crew is off to get the Ghost Hawk assembled. I'm just passing the time here."

"Well, hey, if you're not doing anything else, wanna hit up the local O-club? We're only going to be here the night, so I figure we ought to make it count."

"How could I refuse an offer like that?" Janice smiles. You open the door of the humvee to allow her in.

"Such a gentleman." She giggles.

"If only we had a fancier ride."

"I heard that, sir." The airman grumbles.

"Just take us to the O-club, AIRMAN." You say, subtly warning him what happened in this humvee stayed inside it.

"Got it, sir."

Unlike everything else you've seen, the O-club is actually set up in a permanent structure rather than some sort of tent or trailer. You suppose that when it comes to booze, nobody would make any compromises. You see a pair of MPs at the door, whose eyes track you as you approach. You point to your captain rank insignia and Janice flashes her familiar to let them know she's a witch, and they both let you pass without an issue.

Inside, it was actually pretty damn crowded. Not surprising, since there was a sudden influx of personnel and you had no doubt that the bureaucracy involved was so oppressing that alcohol was one of the officers' few escapes. You also notice there's quite a few witches present, too. You sort of suspect they're hanging around here because they didn't want to hang around their tents. You look around and consider your options. You caught sight of Elsa and Hessler mingling with some American officers. There was Jetstream with another Japanese witch you didn't recognize, though you were guessing she was some kind of subordinate or something. There was another table of what were obviously pilots. You recognized a couple them from Alaska, and there were a couple Japanese pilots among them, as well.

Or hell, you could just sit alone with Janice.

"You know, I was hoping we'd get a table, but at this rate..." You frown as you look around.

"Oh, don't worry about it. Just this once, I'll take advantage of my Witch Privilege." Janice winks as she walks forward to the bartender. "Excuse me, table for two, please?"

The bartender takes one look at Janice, pauses for a second, and turns around, giving a hushed whisper to some of the servers. They quickly rush into a back door, and come back out with a spare table and chairs.

Goddamn, it really did work.

"I'm almost jealous." You sigh.

"Oh, don't be. It's not all it's cracked up to be." Janice laughs as she wraps herself around your arm.

Within a few minutes, you've got your own table. You decide to order the local special, sake. The server places a small bottle and a pair of shallow dishes, presumably for the sake.

"You know, I would've been fine with cups." You frown.

"Oh, stop being such a baby!" Janice snickers. "You need to broaden your horizons!"

"I guess..." You pour some down for her and yourself and you both down a mouthful.

"Oh man, that stuff is strong!" You cough.

"Mmmm, it's not that bad." Janice nods as she savors the flavor. She then pours another serving for herself. "Would you like more?"

You're not sure if you wanted either of you to drink too much. After all, you knew what Janice was like when she got tipsy. And you, well, you'd rather have your inhibitions under control, especially in a public place like this.

"No thanks, I'm good." You shake your head and pull your dish away.

"Oh fine." Janice pouts as she downs her second round. "Anyways, Will, I've been wondering. What's your opinion on the state of Korea?"

"Where did that come out of all of a sudden?" You blink.

"Well..." Janice shrugs as she pours her third round. "Back in the academy, we used to have a lot of debates over whether Japan should still own Korea. To date Japan is the only country that still maintains colonies. Some of my classmates think the US should pressure Japan into releasing Korea. I just wanted to see your opinion on it."

Koreans should probably be independent, but if the transition isn't handled well shit will be even worse for everyone. Look at Africa. So it's kind of in everyone's interests for the war to end with Japan in control. *then* they can worry about independence.

"Heh, that's probably true." Janice nods. "Is it... is it getting hot in here? It feels like they turned on the heater..."

You glance down at the table and notice that the sake bottle was now completely empty. Jesus, how the hell did Janice finish it so fast? You barely even looked away for a second!

"So, Will, maybe we should get another bottle?" Janice says playfully. You turn back t see that her shirt was now partly unbuttoned, showing off more of her cleavage.

"Nope, that's enough for you." You sigh. You leave some money at the table and gently guide Janice out of her chair. Again, she wraps her arms around yours, pressing her ample chest against you in what you believe to be a calculated move on her part.

"Mmmmm, always so direct and commanding.~" She coos.

Oh man, you didn't have time for this. Fortunately nobody else in the club seemed to notice. Once outside, you borrow a humvee and drive back to your tent. Janice is quiet for most of the drive, though she makes the occasional pass at you, which you try to ignore. Finally, you reach the tent, and you gently princess carry Janice out of the humvee, not trusting her to make it on her own.

"Oh, this is so romantic!" Janice chuckles.

You see Tarin poke her head out of the tent and looks at you curiously.

"She's drunk again." You explain.

"Ah." Tarin nods, as if that was all she needed to know. She holds the flaps open as you carry Janice in and settle her down on her cot.

"Ah! What are we going to do on the bed?~" She asks.

"Sleep, for one." You sigh as you grab a blanket and drape it over her.

"Are you sure you don't want to join me?~" She giggles.

Just one more thing.

I know it's supposed to be sad, but Sanya's just too cute and the music that's playing is rather relaxing so I just feel better...

If it's any consolation, they're rather busy trying to get the Ghost Hawk assembled. Bullseye's gotta show some love to his second waifu, after all.
