You frown. “So. You’re not actually a vampire,” you say.

Moriah gives you a kind of flat, incredulous look. “You’re being completely serious right now, aren’t you.”

You hold up your hands. “Just covering my bases!” you say, defensively. ”How am I supposed to know you’re not a blood-sucking fiend of the night?”

“Because vampires aren’t – look, trust me on this one. If you suspect real people of being vampires, then roleplaying games are meant for you.”

Damn. She cut through the distraction quicker than you thought she would. “I don’t know,” you say, rubbing at your arms. “I didn’t think you were… you know, into that kind of stuff.”

“My tastes trend toward esoteric,” says Moriah, smiling ruefully and gesturing at the bizarre décor of her room, “but this is something you'd like. I’m mentioning RPGs to you because from the little I know about you, you'd be all over them, Sierra. Give me five minutes before you turn off your brain.”

“Five minutes is a long time,” you say, shifting in your seat. But it seems like something important to Moriah, so you figure you can tough it out, even if it is horrendously outside of your comfort zone. “But whatever, I’m an adult. Hit me.”

Moriah smirks victoriously. She then launches into the rudimentary run-down of what roleplaying games are, how you play them, and why you’d probably like them.

“So,” you say, trying to wrap your head around the concept, “it’s like a board game.”
>>
>>32806897
“With no board,” Moriah agrees.

“… and a play,” you continue.

She nods again. “With no script.”

You… think you know what the whole deal is, and you communicate as much to Moriah. “But I think I’d need to like, see it to really get it,” you say, still unsure. You’re suspending judgment for the time being, much in the same way you withheld judging Moriah before you got to know her. It was a pleasant surprise the first time, and who knows what’s possible in the future.

“Maybe you’ll get a chance tonight,” Moriah tells you, uncharacteristically upbeat. “It’s something my family likes to do together. Now, would you mind handing me those scissors?”

The two of you work on the collage, and an hour and a half later, it’s pretty much on the verge of total completion. Your in-your-face ironic selections compliment the lower keys of sarcastic subtlety that Moriah brings to the table, and you are well pleased with the results.

“Yes,” says Moriah with satisfaction, surveying your combined efforts. She brushes the extra clippings aside and moves the gluesticks out of the way to give her an unhindered view. “This is going to be great.”

“I concur,” you say. Your stomach lodges a complaint in the form of a growl, however. Perhaps it’s about time to stop doing schoolwork and start doing something productive, like eating.

And frankly, there’s another reason you’d rather be done for the night. Scissors. You stuck to slicing out your additions with your switchblade, which you’ve been keeping sharp enough for such tasks, and have cleverly managed to have Moriah do all of the heavy duty cutting work to avoid touching them, but having those things around is just not what you’re into right now. Even averting your eyes when Moriah has them in operation has only gotten you so far. The sound of them rending paper asunder makes you set your teeth on edge. (+7 Stress: 22/100)

Though, instead of mentioning this, you mention the other, more acceptable excuse of, “I hunger.”

Moriah pauses in her cutting to quirk an eyebrow at you. “Excuse me?”

“So your dad likes painting and stuff,” you say. “Does he also like cooking and stuff?”

She gets what you’re getting at. “No he does not. We have a housekeeper, though. She usually has dinner ready around now, if you want to go check.”

“Yes. That,” you say, getting up. Moriah joins you, and you go downstairs to venture into the kitchen. As you go, you shoot a quick text off to Waldric, his continued silence starting to bother you. The message reads, ‘dude r u stll alave or what’.

When you get downstairs, you find a serious woman manages several pots and pans in the kitchen. Her movements about the space and her careful management of the cooking ingredients tells you she has extensive experience with this sort of thing.
>>
>>32807943

The aroma that suffuses the air is delightful to your sharp sense of smell. In the air are freshly chopped carrots, painstakingly seasoned chicken, and the delicate smell of baking bread. Sweet mercy these are all good things.

“How is dinner coming along, Emmaline?” asks Moriah.

“Ten minutes more,” the housekeeper replies, keeping on her work. “You and your friend can set the table if you’d like. Everyone should be arriving soon.”

Moriah and you get to it, you mostly because it’s polite, and there’s really nothing better to do while your stomach is running on empty. The Crowthers have a long, elegant dining table that could probably seat twenty people. You set places for six with expensive and fragile plateware, though your math senses tell you that it’s unlikely that Emmaline the housekeeper eats with her employer. Unless she does?

In the middle of your task, a young man in a suit walks into the room. He catches you while Moriah’s back in the kitchen rummaging around for something, so she isn’t there to introduce you. Still, judging from all the paintings of him you’ve seen hanging around, Wolfgang is not hard to identify. He halts at the sight of you, evidently surprised to see somebody he doesn’t know in his house.

You stop and look back at him. “Hello, Moriah’s brother,” you say. “My name’s Sierra.”

Wolfgang takes a second to respond, and you take advantage of his delay to give him a general once over. He’s a little taller than you, and looks kind of like his dad, but not so much in the scary hawk kind of way, and more in a kind of dark and striking kind of way. The short, spikiness of his hair and his relaxed posture go a long way in distinguishing him as well. And, you note, the suit does look good on him. Maybe that’s why he wears one all the time.

“Right. So you’re Moriah’s friend,” he says, half to himself. “She talks a lot about you.”

You blink at that. “She does?”

Wolfgang kind of freezes up for a half second, perhaps realizing he said something wrong. “Oh. Not. No, she doesn’t. Are we setting the table?” he squints questioningly and points toward the kitchen. “It looks like we’re setting the table.” He hurries off to join you and Moriah in preparations.
>>
>>32809333

With the additional help, you’re pretty much left to watch the two of them finish up, since in the time it takes you to find the cups or forks or whatever, they go there and back again like three times. When the table is ready, you take a seat by Moriah, and Wolfgang sits across from the both of you.

“Sierra, this is my brother Wolfgang,” Moriah says, introducing you to him.

“I figured,” you say.

Wolfgang takes a moment to square his silverware with the edge of the table. “And you’re quick on your feet,” he says, his expression neutral. “Though you and Mori probably wouldn’t be friends if you weren’t.”

You take a second to look at Moriah’s brother more closely. He looks older than you by maybe a year, which makes sense, because he’s a year older than Moriah. You can smell a hint of aftershave on him, as well as shoe polish and just a dash of something that smells like… a waterfall? Maybe some kind of cologne, then.

“Thanks,” you say. “I think? You just said I’m clever in like, a roundabout way, right? Because for some reason, I feel vaguely insulted.”

Wolfgang smirks. “You’d know if I was insulting you.”

You snort. “Really? Because I’m not so sure,” you reply, a tone of insult in your voice.

He steeples his fingers in front of him, pondering what is likely a clever response. Moriah, however, cuts him short. “He’s mostly bark,” she says to you. Then she addresses Wolfgang. “And she’s mostly bite. Stop testing my guest, Wolf. She doesn’t need your approval.”

“Yeah, I don’t need your approval,” you parrot after her.
>>
>>32809882
Well, with our enhanced sense of smell we'd probably notice if any of them smelled like dead people, not definitive, but it would raise some questions.
>>
>>32810142

“In that case, I approve,” he says simply.

Moriah seems a bit put out by his wheedling out of her demands. You take advantage of the break to throw in one of your million dollar questions. “So, there’s four people here, and then your sister, but that leaves one more seat,” you say. “Who else is coming?”

“And she’s paranoid,” Wolfgang adds sarcastically. “Heavens be, you two could be sisters.”

You kind of suppress a chuckle, but Moriah silences him with a look. “The plus one is Maviel’s significant other,” Moriah answers. He’s artsy.” She puts air quotes around the word ‘artsy’, as if she doesn’t really agree with it.

“He’s a swell enough guy,” says Wolfgang, taking up the absent boyfriend’s defense. “But I will say that he tries too hard. As in, he tries way too hard.”

You can’t imagine why anybody would be acting stiff in this house. It’s not like Daddy Crowther is creepy as hell or anything. But that’s not really something you want to talk about right now, so you decide to change the topic. “So Wolfgang,” you say, “you’re out of highschool right?”

“Thank god,” says Wolfgang.

“So what are you doing now, then? Like, are you in college right now?”

“Right here in San Fran,” he answers. “I’m going into law. Though unfortunately, they don’t allow you to immediately skip to the good classes. I’m trapped in a gaggle of GE courses this semester.”

Mr. Crowther chooses now to make his entrance. Wolfgang stands to welcome his father, and the two exchange a nod in greeting before Wolfgang sits back down. Mr. Crowther, meanwhile, takes a seat at the head of the table. Just as he does so, Emmaline begins ferrying out dishes from the kitchen to the table.

Whatever else that may be going on with Moriah’s dad, he certainly has a good sense of timing.

“Did you do well on your Calculus midterm?” Mr. Crowther asks.

“Swimmingly,” Wolfgang replies, giving a big, dry smile.

Crowther nods once. “Splendid.”

Emmaline finishes transferring the food to the table, and then makes herself scarce. There’s white Fettuccine Alfredo, chicken and freshly baked rolls, mixed vegetables of carrots and broccoli, and a tall crystal pitchers of apple cider and ice water on the table. Everything has its own fancy, expensive serving dish.
>>
>>32810816
>might also be the surviving member of a Demonic Noble family.

>>32810822
It's not paranoia, if it's keeping your ass alive. Besides, it's not like paying attention is a negative trait.
>>32810816
Yeah, 'tis a little mary sueish.
>>
>>32810863

But nobody touches the feast arrayed before you. Instead, Moriah, Wolfgang, and Mr. Crowther all look at the tall grandfather clock standing at the far end of the table. It strikes the hour, and begins toning a deep, slightly achromatic chorus of bells.

The clock plays on for what seems like half an hour, during which time everyone remains silent. No one speaks until the last chord from the grandfather clock stills and goes quiet.

Mr. Crowther speaks. “They’re late,” he pronounces. “We shall dine without them. Moriah, would you pass along the Fettuccine Alfredo?”

Wolfgang begins helping himself to rolls, using a fancy set of tongs, while Moriah transfers the vegetables to her father. No one seems to speak or make effort at starting conversation.

We very well might be.

From what I can tell a lot of Halth's hierarchy is at least loosely tied to the Demon's strength. In our dream about our Mother she was shown to have some influence on the "Conclave", which sounds like some sort of ruling body. Also, the way she spoke about us and Nevada as well as how our own powers have developed lead me to believe that she was at least pretty powerful. In addition Tweedy mentioned that we were part Highborn Infernus.

It's not cut and dried, and we don't know exactly how Halth's hierarchy works, but it's not unreasonable to come to the conclusion that we're nobility of some kind.
>>
>>32811172
Not to mention that Cordeliate seemed pretty nonchalant about her defeat at Sierra's hands, and Ranthix was definitely submissive to Cordeliate and pretty much begged Sierra to kill him when he noticed Sierra had Cord's sword.
>>
>>32811235
That just points to Sierra having a destiny (which Ranthix straight up said) because her particular type of mutt never stops growing in power.

Being a mutt like that makes her, if anything, the opposite of nobility.

And Cordeliate had already been dealt the death blow. She knew she was already dead - that's why she reacted that way.

There's really zero evidence that she's nobility, and quite a bit to the contrary.

>>

She'd rather have the sword put to good use rather than it be abandoned in the middle of nowhere.

I mean, she's dead, what the hell is she going to do with it?
>>
>>32811390
Destiny and undiscovered nobility go hand in hand.
>>
>>32811449
She was already dead. The sword was already going to us. She just wanted to make sure we would take good care of it now that it was ours.

You've got to understand, she had already been dealt her death blow, and knew it. That changes how a person reacts to things, and that sort of shellshocked desire to make sure something you care about is taken care of is perfectly normal.

If she had been acting that way BEFORE we had landed the killing blow, THEN some warning bells would be going off.

That really doesn't have much to do with anything.

She was kinda dying at the time and probably figured we'd loot her body anyways. It doesn't have to do with our heritage.

>>32811390
There's a decent bit of evidence for it. It's not concrete, especially since we don't know how Halth's nobility works, but our Mother was at the very least quite powerful, influential, and she passed down Belephegoran, Inferus, and Verwelken traits to us.

We aren't some random ass mutt, we were even told that we were "the brilliant blazing fury of the stars, unquenchable, unconquerable, and indomitable." Our Mother was strong and important, things that probably go hand in hand down in Halth, and while they might not call her a Duchess, she seems like about as close to Demonic Nobility as you can get.

You stay quiet and try to focus on your food, which is pretty easy for a while. But eventually, the silence gets to you. Especially after all the chattiness with Wolfgang and Moriah. You can’t keep quiet any longer.

“I like your guys’ house,” you blurt out suddenly, shattering the reprieve.

Mr. Crowther stops in the middle of raising his cup for a drink.

You feel like you did something wrong.

But Wolfgang speaks a second after, a little more loudly than what’s necessary. “It was built in 1850, during the gold rush,” he says, seizing a piece of chicken for himself.

Moriah is quick to pick up the slack. “It’s belonged to our family for over a hundred and fifty years,” she says.

There’s another pause of tension. Moriah and Wolfgang seem held in suspense on some unknown event.

And then, a thin smile breaks over Mr. Crowther’s face. “It’s a family treasure.”

“And,” you say, feeling slightly more welcome than you did before, “is there a real treasure like, buried in the attic or something?”

Wolfgang smiles politely at you. “Buried in the basement,” he corrects you.

Yeah well. That’s what you meant to say, because obviously. “I said what I said,” you say, not giving an inch.

“I haven’t found any mysterious chests in the basement recently,” Moriah says, “but there could still be one or two in the cellar.”

“This house is the real treasure,” insists Mr. Crowther, faintly displeased at the chicanery of his children.
>>
>>32812048

The conversation takes off from there. You find out about how the house survived all of San Fransisco’s numerous earthquakes and fires through mysterious means, and how it got passed down from family member to family member until it came to rest with Mrs. Crowther (may her soul be at peace) and then her family.

Mr. Crowther is currently telling you the story of how his wife’s deadbeat brother tried to get the house taken away from him because of some idiosyncrasy in the will. In short, it’s not working out for the brother because Mr. Crowther runs his own law firm.

“And I told him just that,” Mr. Crowther says with a note finality, “and I never saw his face again.”

Wolfgang and Moriah laugh, but you feel as if you missed the punchline. Their uncle was permanently kind of exiled from the county because of some weird legal loophole? What? You thought maybe they’d make amends or something.

Moriah sees your confusion. “It makes sense in context,” she says.
>>
>>32812071

Just then, an older version of Moriah with a more elegant sense of fashion and much longer hair walks into the dining room. She wears a neat vest and blouse combination with a long, sophisticated skirt. Maviel is accompanied by a tall, handsome man with long, dark hair and a pale complexion. He wears a slightly purplish dress shirt and a pair of dark jeans, and his expression is slightly worried.

His attention immediately snaps to Mr. Crowther. “Forgive me for keeping your daughter, Mr. Crowther,” he says, giving an ashen smile. “It was entirely my fault.”

“We’re here in one piece. There’s nothing to apologize for,” says Maviel, giving her father a rigid look. “Isn’t that right, father?”

Mr. Crowther’s displeasure shows in his eyes, but doesn’t come out in his tone. “Please, have a seat,” he says, dodging Maviel’s statement. “We wouldn’t want your food getting cold on you.”

The couple takes up the empty seats adjacent to Wolfgang. Maviel’s date doesn’t notice your presence until after he’s had a seat. Waldric literally stops breathing at the sight of you.

Not the only thing, Ranthix seemed pretty focused on his honor and reputation as well. Shouldn't be hard with our sense of smell. We'd also probably have picked up the scent of dead bodies if they were necromancers or otherwise spent appreciable amounts of time around corpses.

We also could probably work out if any of them are smokers, if they've been in any fights lately, and some idea of where they've been throughout the day.

This would do well to keep him unbalanced for longer, after which the fact that we know each other gives us a lot more conversational leeway in front of the others. Find verrrrry subtle ways to indicate that we're growing in leaps and bounds, posibly an offhand remark that alludes to our new sword or the fight if you know what to look for; something like "you'll be glad to hear that the... tour group all got home safely" with regards to the hostages.

>>32812425
I'd advise against this, starting an under the table emotional fight seems like a bad idea, he'd notice what we're doing to him, and he's a Belephegoran meaning he likely has far more experience and aptitude with mind/emotion fuckery, especially since we haven't focused much on those.

A general piece of advice for our future, try not to confront an enemy at their specialty, one of the big advantages of being a hybrid is that we have options. Don't get in a mindfuck contest with a Belphegoran, don't get in a contest of raw strength and speed, or try to outburn, an Infernus, don't turn the lights off against a Verwelken. You get the idea. We're a jack of all trades with a bit of a focus on stealth and ambush, keep that in mind.

>>
>>32812616
Sierra already saw through his crap at the mall. His lack of breathing indicates that he's afraid already. I'm not worried about him. I wouldn't have tried this against an unknown, but this guy is already vulnerable.
>>
>>32812723
He's Belphegoran. Isaac called him one and Verwelkens usually die in the sun.
>>
>>32812616
This guy is probably right; as a hybrid we should always seek to attack opponents on their weak points. Belphegoreans lack innate combat buffs, so while one might, say, be an expert fencer, we can steamroll them in combat. Verwelken would be hindered by our nature as a walking torch, and Infernus can be tripped up by an opponent who's a closer match to them in durability than usual, but is also fully capable of unconventional tactics using other powers that will confound their fairly direct approach.

>>32812723
He's Belphegorean; when we first met we could sense him layering on magic charm. That meeting plus our encounter with Cordeliate lent credence to the idea that Belphegoreans are at least more resistant to each other's mind games, presumably in a takes-one-to-know-one way. I suspect we only got Cordeliate as well as we did with an emotion blast due to a combination of a good roll plus the fact that she didn't know our type to begin with, letting us catch her off guard.
>>
>>32812726
>yfw Moirah's sister thinks we're Waldric's mistress when he starts acting all weird around us.
>>
>>32812616
>>32812795
Hey, this isn't a game of mental ball massage. This is magical shadow squeeze. Sierra has the power and has already demonstrated that she's immune to his "charms." A Sap Will while he's still shocked will only add to his despair and confusion, and the pressure will remind him who's in control. There's nothing mental about this.
>>
>>32812925
Let's not. If we use our powers on him he's liable to do the same back to us.
>>
>>32813000
plus we have no idea how Moirah's family might know about demons and shit. Even if Moirah doesn't know there's a good chance her sister does.
>>
>>32812795
While Belphegoreans aren't usually built for direct confrontations, we shouldn't underestimate them, in between the debuffs they can apply, PP stealing, corrupting attacks, and other Belphegorean abilities we haven't gotten close to unlocking they can still do serious damage. We got pretty lucky against Cordeliate.

On a related note, we really should pick up Inflict Pain when we next get a chance. It seems like it'd work really well for setting people up so our Demonbane friends can fill them with lead and crossbow bolts, or forcing an enemy to make an opening so we can gut them.

That and Blood Curse so we have a way to deal with buffs and regenerators and so that it's easier to kill big, tough enemies.

While I expect Waldric is just as bad as all the other members of the demon mafia, a part of me would like to see him trying to get the rest of them done in because he's gone native and wants to settle down and play angsty RPGs with his human(?) waifu. His friends=people you haven't backstabbed yet could have just been bluster since he didn't know how classically demonic our attitudes were, and he was protecting his ass/implying he doesn't have ties.
>>
>>32813305
Ok, Belphegorans are the manipulating lying type, right? You can't believe your eyes when they're there. I'm not going to bother going back to read that part, so just tell me and I'll take your word for it.

Going on this assumption.

Let's say that Waldric has been playing us this whole time by acting weak (at the mall) and surprised when we're here. Isn't it better to put him in a position to reveal his true intent earlier rather than later? Being manipulated by him doesn't seem like a good plan (unless you're just playing along), because in the end, the plan will involve getting rid of you too.
>>
>>32813411
So he's either stronger more antagonistic and we piss him off, or he is who he says he is and we piss him off.

>>32813542
THE LAWN LOST
>>
>>32813457
I just don't expect him to become openly antagonistic in this setting, so it's a good place to judge his intent. If he is who he says he is, I don't think he'll be angry as much as afraid that Sierra not only survived, but took down the obviously more dominant demon lieutenant. If he reacts to our saps and shadows, then we'll be able to judge his strength in a controlled environment. I highly doubt he'll end lives sitting at his girlfriend's table.
>>
>>32812086
>Hello Maviel and Maviel's significant other, I'm Sierra.
>Take a big fate bite from your roll and pour Waldric a glass of cider, then pour one for Maviel.
>>
>>32813457
Also, it reveals things we don't want revealed.

I don't think Waldric knows our heritage mix, I'm pretty sure every Demon that has directly seen our Verwelken Shadow Fuckery is dead, and he might not know about the Belphegoran thing. The Infernus part isn't really one we can keep hidden when our demonic attributes are out.

This plan could reveal or partially reveal both of these. One of the reasons he's working with us is that he's scared of us, and fear works on two parts, fear of the known and fear of the unknown, he knows we took down Dogwalker, but he doesn't know how nor does he know how strong we are, he knows Cordeliate died, but he doesn't know if it was us who did it, he doesn't know if he can take us. The less he knows of our capabilities, the more likely he will second guess himself when it comes to fucking with us or betraying us. As long as some part of him is wondering "Can she kill me too?" we're in a better position.

Another thing to note, he had 22 max HP when we met him, Cordeliate had 23, so he's probably loosely within the same range of power as her, I'm guessing better at some stuff, worse at melee combat, and she was able to turn Borya into a utter fucking wreck, hold her own against superior numbers, and if we weren't lucky she may have gutted us.
>>

In this order.
>>
>>32813885
And Rowan has her Angelic Granddaddy's sword, Issac has a Crossbow that pierces through armor and protection.

The sword helped, but the fact remains that she, a Belphegoran, not a focused combat monster, when caught with some Demonbane, a Druid, and a Hellborn attacking her she held her own in melee combat. And when she got 1v1 with someone she rendered them a barely cognizant mess. If she wasn't caught off guard by us being Verwelken, or we weren't quite as lucky our fight could have gone in an entirely different direction.

>>32813934
I wouldn't really call the hostage and lawyer on her side, and the goatmen went down pretty quick, they helped but they acted more like a hp sponge than a big threat. Their main combatants were Cordeliate and Ranthix when he showed up, against Rowan, Issac, Borya, Borya's wolves, and us.

There are mitigating circumstances, and she had help. But the important thing to draw from this is to not underestimate our opponents. Waldric is not a pushover, and you generally want to avoid going 1v1 against a Belphegoran, it gives them an opportunity to cripple you with pain/sorrow to make it easier to steal some PP, deal damage, and repeat the process with the PP they just stole. That's not even counting any tricks a reasonably powerful Belphegoran has up his sleeve.
>>
>>32814267
Don't underestimate the value added by discardable HP sponges. Borya's wolves have to be incredibly weak to be so utterly destroyed by that sword, and Borya was taken out by Ranthix. IMO if that fight had been Sierra on Cordeliate with no sword or HP sponges and distractions from fleeing hostages and having to take time to bite Ranthix, Cord would have bit the dust.
>>
Well. That answers your question as to whether or not he was still alive. You give Waldric a broad smile. “Hello, Maviel’s boyfriend,” you say. “My name’s Sierra.”

“What a… surprise,” Waldric says, quickly recovering from his shock. “I didn’t know you were one to take guests, Mr. Crowther.”

Mr. Crowther remains impassive. “I make exceptions,” he says.

Waldric refrains from looking at you. “This is… quite the exception,” he says.

“As are you,” says Crowther, a cold iron in his voice. “Sierra is Moriah’s guest. You are Maviel’s guest. It is not your place to question these things, Waldron.”

It doesn’t look like Maviel likes like the confrontational direction of the conversation between her boyfriend and her dad, and quickly turns her attention to you. “Ah. So you would be Mori’s friend, then?” she asks. “Congratulations.” The joke, perhaps, serves to show Waldric that he doesn’t need to take your presence too seriously.

“Uh,” you reply. Well, if she’s going to make fun of you, you figure you can get away with making fun of Waldric, through her. “Anybody ever tell you your boyfriend looks like Edward Cullen? Because, you know, he does.”

Though, you aren’t quite sure how in-the-loop Maviel really is with what Waldric is, or what the relationship between you and him is. Does she even know his real name, or is he just Waldron to her, too?

It seems that you struck a nerve. Maviel smiles sharply at you. “And I see you share Moriah’s wit.”
>>
>>32814377
“Leave her be, Mav,” Moriah bites back.

Wolfgang, meanwhile, has another forkful of carrots. He’s plainly enjoying the whole exchange from the sidelines. You’re kind of involved yourself, but you’re not sure whether you’re entertained, or if you’re under awkward social pressure from trying to hold up so many fronts at one time. Maybe something of a mix? (+5 Stress: 27/100)

“Perhaps, this once, it would be better if I availed myself early,” Waldric says, making to get up.

Maviel clamps a hand down on his wrist, pinning him to the table. “Stay exactly where you are.”

You can’t really help but snicker at Waldric being bossed around by Moriah’s sister. (-2 Stress: 25/100)

Waldric gives you a very, very displeasured look.

And Mr. Crowther takes a bite of pasta, chews carefully, and swallows, somehow commanding attention without doing anything out of the ordinary. Everything goes quiet. He looks up at all present and speaks in a calm, clear words. “There will be order in this house,” he says. “We will finish dinner while having polite conversation; and afterwards, we will entertain ourselves in perfect agreeability, one to another. Furthermore, after tonight, you will have nothing but fond recollections of our time spent together.”

He lets his statement hang in the air for a few seconds, giving everyone the time necessary to process it.

It’s a lot to ask considering the present company. But it is his house. So you figure you’ll play ball. If Waldric can’t be cordial, then you figure Mr. Crowther can have a word with him. If he really does care about Maviel at all, he’s pretty much at the mercy of the social situation as you are. If it’s all an act, then well, you killed Cordeliate without too many issues. Slaying Belphergorans the Sequel could be put into production at a moment’s notice.

So. For the rest of dinner, everything behaves kind of normally. You think? Waldric shares some BS about some art gallery he’s putting together. Maviel brings up some plan she and ‘Wally’ have to go up to the mountains to take advantage of the recent snow there, for a couple days. Her dad doesn’t seem pleased with the idea, and she slowly sells him on the, you can’t stop me so you might as well get used to it angle.

You, Moriah, and Wolfgang have your own kind of conversation at the same time, where you take turns telling stories of bad teachers and/or college professors that you have.

When dinner does draw to a close, Emmaline returns to start clearing the table.

“May we be excused, father?” Moriah asks, speaking for both you and herself.

“Of course,” he says, releasing you with a small gesture.
>>
>>32814848

You get up and go out with Moriah. She walks with you into a nearby room full of fancy old couches and a low, round table. What is this, a parlor? Is that like, still even a room people have in their houses?

Moriah gets to business at once, and produces several cases from the interior of one of the couches, the cushions of which fold upward to reveal a large storage space. She lays the boxes out on the table and starts pulling out books and papers and dice with more faces than you’ve ever seen a dice have before.

“We’re actually running a couple of games right now,” she says, putting the sketchbook you’ve seen her use in class on the table. She opens it up to the latest page, which you see is scrawled with lines and lines of notes and ideas. “But since you’re new, I think it would be better if we stuck to something a little more familiar. Do you like Star Wars?”

I really do enjoy the potential of Sierra being completely out of the loop on everything that isn't being a gangbanger, she was not, in fact, a hermit.

“Well I sure as hell ain’t Canadian,” you say, taking a seat nearby Moriah. Do they even have movies north of the border? “So. Yeah, who doesn’t?”

“Good. We can stick with the current campaign then,” she says to herself.

“Hold that thought,” you say. Before you go off on tangents of fantasy and sorcery or whatever, you feel like you need some more information on Waldric, or more specifically, his relationship with the Crowthers. Especially if he’s going to be in here doing games with everybody like it’s nobody’s business. “Like, being serious,” you say, “I think I’ve seen Waldron somewhere before. How well do you know him?”

“Maviel’s been going out with him for… six or seven months now,” she says, her attention still primarily focused on setting up for the game. “He collects art. She makes art. And I give them a hard time, but he’s nice to her and they love each other.” Moriah looks about to say something else, but decides against it. Whatever it was makes her look a little sad, though.

You don’t know what it’s all about, but you don’t want to pry. You change the topic back to the game. “So, why’s it matter if I like Star Wars, anyway?” you ask. If you’re just going to be listening in, you could just listen in to anything. Unless. “Wait. Am I playing?”

“Yes,” says Moriah, pulling out a sheet of paper.

“I didn’t agree to this,” you protest.

“No you didn’t,” says Moriah.
>>
>>32815752

So that’s how she’s going to play it off, you think to yourself. “Wouldn’t that be like, hard for the gamemaster to just throw another character into the story?” you ask. You don’t want to ruin everything. That’s just about the opposite of your definition of having a good time. Unless you’re ruining everything for people you don’t like. But you kind of like these people, minus one.

Moriah sidles up next to you with a rulebook in one hand and the paper in the other. “I’m the gamemaster and I say it’ll be fine,” she says. “All you need is a character, and I’ll take care of the rest.”

You don’t really know where to start. “What’s the story right now?”

Moriah seems excited at the question. “Okay. The background premise is that Luke went to the dark side, and took over the Empire with Darth Vader. The game follows new Sith Lord who’s trying to take down evil Luke,” she says. “All the players are the minions and apprentices of this Sith. This all takes place twenty or so years in the future from the last movie, so all that content happened already.”

“So,” you ask, “whoever I make up’s going to be helping out this Sith guy?”
>>
>>32815752
THE LAWN HAS BEEN VANQUISHED. BUT BE WARY, FOR IT SHALL RISE YET AGAIN.
>>
>>32815768

“Exactly,” says Moriah.

Well. That’s easy enough to follow. The classic evil-future episode. But now you have to figure out some kind of idea for something not totally stupid.

Harvey hasn't been either of those either, but we havent spent more than 5 minutes with the dude because of a combination of some folks thinking nice=serial killer and Rowan being nerdy girl friend material.

Just because one guy says he thinks Harvey is a serial killer doesn't mean everyone who doesn't want to hang out with him thinks the same.
