You are Captain WILLIAM PIERCE, a combat rescue officer of the United States Air Force.

Another bump on the road jolts you awake, and you're greeted with the glaring desert sun blasting you in the face. You groan and wince as your eyes adjust, any chances of going to sleep now all but evaporated.

Currently, you were sitting in a military charter bus on its way to Edwards Air Force Base. It was your designated reporting base once your leave expired. Thankfully, the Air Force was considerate enough to provide transportation to the remote desert airbase, and looking around, you could see a few witches and personnel , no doubt returning from their own leave periods as well.

You next check on your witches, only to see Janice, Red, and Tarin all still fast asleep. You all did stay up rather late last night. As for your aircrew, they would all be making their own way to Edwards through whatever means available to them.

Your head then turns back to the window, where you catch the sign signalling that you were approaching Edwards AFB shoot past.

back in to the breach!
>>

You decide to let them sleep for a bit longer. There really wasn't any harm to it. You lean back in your seat and snuggle up a bit closer to Janice, who is sleeping beside you. She shifts a bit and her head plops down on her shoulder as she mumbles something you can't quite hear. Your XO and girlfriend could be really cute at times. However, you had to mentally remind yourself to keep shows of affection on the down low. While relationships between active duty personnel were highly discouraged, you were pretty sure witches were exempt from that rule. However, you weren't really the type to flaunt your relationship status around, and you doubted Janice was the type, either.

However, even something as innocent as this was enough to draw some curious looks from the other witches on the bus. You could see eyes darting your direction, and conspiratorial whispers you couldn't quite hear but knew were being said. But you decide to ignore it. What could they do?

Finally, the bus grinds to a halt just outside what looks to be a sort of processing center.

"This is the last stop." The driver announces. "Please remember not to forget any baggage or belongings, and kick some Russian ass."

There were a few chuckles among the passengers before they started getting up from their seats. You give Janice a light shove and her eyes flutter open.

"Are we there already?" She asks.

"Yeah." You nod. You then glance out he window, and you could swear you saw Anderson. But... that couldn't be, right? He was supposed to still be in Europe...

You decide that Anderson could wait later. After rousing both Red and Tarin, you and your three witches exit the bus and head to the undercarriage where all of your baggage was being kept. Unfortunately, the airmen tasked with unloading everything seemed to be in a hurry, and were in no mood to waste time. They were just grabbing whatever bags were in reach and unceremoniously tossing them onto the pavement. Fortunately, you manage to spot your bags and you slip in between them and the airmen to keep them from reaching it.

"Don't worry, I'll handle your bag, Janice." You say, shouldering both your and her bag. Thankfully, both of you followed the notion of packing light. All you the either of you really had were just spare changes of clothes.

"Awww, thank you, Will!" Janice smiles and gives you a peck on the cheek.

Yep. Good job being subtle here.

Meanwhile, Tarin somehow managed to pack even lighter than you or Janice. She merely carries a simple backpack rather than the full size duffel bags you and Janice are using.

Red... well... of course she never really got the concept of packing light just yet.

"JESUS, Red, what did you pack? Bricks?!" You wince as you lift her bag.

"Souvenirs!" Red pouts. "I got stuff for Mom, Dad, and a few other friends and family! I didn't have a chance to mail it all out before we left, so I was planning to do it on base..."

"Damnit, Red." You sigh.

"Hm, where's the rest of our aircrew?" Janice asks.

"Guess they're late." Tarin shrugs.

"Let's wait for them to show up. No sense going on without them." You say.

"How considerate of you!" Janice beams.

"It's nothing special." You shrug.

You stand around on the pavement for about another twenty minutes, before you see a C-130 touch down on a nearby landing strip. Another five minutes after that, you can see your aircrew being shuttled over in a jeep.

"Hey guys!" You smile wave as they approach.

"Captain!" Hoskin grins as he hops out of the jeep. "Good to see you!"

"How was the leave?"

"Refreshing!" Hoskins laughs. "But I forgot what little hellions the kids could be. I think I got nastier wounds from them than I did in combat!"

"Snips?"

"Just some nice R&R back home." Your copilot shrugs. "Nothing too special."

"Rex?" You turn to the airman.

"Nothing much. Did some sightseeing in England with a friend, and ran into my brother. Kind of a surprise, really."

"Wait..." You narrow your eyes. "Isn't your brother Frank Bishop?"

"Yeah." Rex nods simply.

....

"Is that it?" You blink.

"What do you want to know?" Rex raises an eyebrow.

"Nevermind." You shake your head and turn to your pilot. "Bullseye? You... you look kinda like Hell."

You weren't kidding, either. Bullseye seemed to be absolutely exhausted, and you were fairly sure it wasn't from jet lag.

"It's nothing, sir." Bullseye croaks. "Must've caught something."

"Was that something French and starts with the letter N?" You grin.

"I'm not saying anything." Bullseye says defensively.

"But we want juicy details!" You say in a teasing manner. "How did things go?"

"Yeah, does she fuck like a tiger?" Hoskins asks.

"More like fifty tigers." Bullseye sighs. "That girl has some ungodly stamina. I think I understand why she's France's top witch ace now..."

"So I'm guess she was on top the whole time?" Snips chuckles.

"No!" Bullseye snaps. "Just... most of the the time."

"Well, even a tigress has to show mercy from time to time." You laugh. "Though to be honest, I would've thought she'd follow you all the way here."

"Oh, believe me, she was thinking about it." Bullseye smiles weakly. "But the FAF was pretty adamant about her staying in Europe, though nobody would tell me why, not even her. All very hush hush."

"Intriguing." You nod. "Anyways, I guess that's enough teasing. We've wasted enough time."

With that, all of you head off for processing. Mainly, it was just so the base personnel could confirm your identities, just to make sure you weren't going AWOL or were spies or anything like that. Regular personnel were processed differently from witches though, and you were quickly separated from Janice, Red, and Tarin.

"All right, everything seems in order, Captain Pierce." The Air Force clerk says as he hands your ID badge back to you. "Now, if can just wait here, somebody will be by to see you shortly."

With that, the clerk quickly gathers up his papers and leaves the room. Hardly seconds later, Anderson slips into the room and sits at the desk across from you.

"Good to see you, Pierce." You CO grins. "Surprised to see me?"

"Actually, no." You say flatly.

"Figures." Anderson chuckles. "Guess we've done our fair share of black ops, haven't we?"

"What's happened this time?" You ask.

"Nothing too urgent, if that's what you're thinking." Anderson says. "But things have changed. You won't be returning to Europe."

"Sir?" You blink. You figured in the large scheme of things, Europe would be the most important front. "I thought Europe needed every man it could get."

"In an ideal world, yes." Anderson nods. "But as we've all seen, nothing is particularly ideal about this war."

"So what's going on?" You ask. "Where are going?"

"Japan." Anderson says simply. "You'll be heading back to the Pacific."

"Japan? I thought they were handling themselves pretty well." You frown.

"Yeah, if you believe what the news tells you." Anderson shakes his head. "What nobody is saying is that Japan's armed forces are spread thin across three countries. They have to balance occupying Kamchatka, holding what's left of Korea, and shoring up their defenses on the home front. The Emperor has officially requested military assistance from the US, and CINPAC is sending a relief fleet their way. The Air Force wants to be involved too, so they're transferring in some fighter and airlift squadrons from Alaska."

"That still doesn't explain why we need to go."

"Well, believe it or not, the Japanese specifically requested for you unit."

"What?!" You blink.

"Like I said, your successes have been spreading in certain circles. The Japanese think we're on to something and they want to see joint airlift units in action."

"Well, if they asked so nicely." You shrug. "Are you coming with us?"

You were fairly sure Red was going to be absolutely THRILLED. She did not make it a secret that she had a very deep respect for Japanese warrior and witch tradition.

"Sorry, but I'm still tied down in Europe. Somebody's gotta keep an eye on 'Team Spectre.'" Anderson rolls his eyes. "But don't worry, you'll be back under a familiar face. I hear Colonel Kelsey was your previous CO?"

"Yeah." You nod. "I guess Alaska got too boring for him?"

"Seems that way." Anderson chuckles. "He's now in command of the 92nd Joint Airlift Wing. He'll probably explain more about it when you meet him."

"When do we leave?"

"Today. We've already shipped the Ghost Hawk and the Comanche over. You'll be airlifted to an IJN base in Okinawa. If we time it right you'll get there at the same time as fleet."

"By 'time it right', I assume we're leaving soon?"

"Within the hour. I know it's short notice, but the brass want you back on the line ASAP."

"I understand." You nod. "Anything else for us?"

"Yes." Anderson stands up and holds out his hand. "It's been a pleasure working with you, Captain. Hopefully we'll cross paths again."

"Same, Colonel." You grin as you shake Anderson's outstretched hand. "Give my regards to Lex and others, okay?"

"Will do." Anderson nods and hands you a folder. "Those are your orders. There's a C-17 that will take you and your helos to Japan. Impossible to miss. Good luck, Captain."

You both trade one final salute and Anderson makes his exit.

You sigh. Japan. You don't even know the first thing about that exotic Asian country, except that they were the only naval power in the Pacific that could rival the US. It was a good thing they had been staunch allies since the Martian War.

You decide to go check up on the Ghost Hawk while it's here. It's been a long tie since you've seen and you wanted to make sure it was in good condition. Heading outside, you suddenly understand what Anderson meant when he said you couldn't possibly miss the C-17. The thing was absolutely massive, making even the mighty C-130 look like a paperweight in comparison.

You can see something vaguely shaped like the Ghost Hawk sitting on the tarmac outside. You could see that parts of it, like the rotor blades had been removed for easier storage, and the entire hull was covered up in a thick tarp for both protection against the elements and to obscure its appearance from prying eyes. You head over to the techs overseeing the loading process, and aren't surprised to see that it's the same crew Christina brought with her to keep the Ghost Hawk maintained.

"Ah, come to see the Ghost Hawk again?"

As if on cue, Christina herself had shown up.

"Yeah. I just wanted to make sure it was still in one piece." You say.

"Don't worry. I treat my developments with great care." Christina says. "I can assure you that the Ghost Hawk is in perfect working order... once we put it back together."

"That's good to hear." You nod.

You both sort of stand there awkwardly as you both watch the tech crew slowly load both the Ghost Hawk and Comanche into the C-17's open maw.

"So... where you headed off to this time?" Christina asks, breaking the silence.

"Japan." You respond.

"Ah. Red will really like that." Christina smiles. "How has she been?"

"She's been doing fine. She had a great time during leave." You say.

"You know, I should probably pay a visit to Richard." Christina muses and then sees your confused expression. "My husband, and Red's father."

"Ah." You nod. "You're not coming with us?"

"As much as I'd love to stay and personally gather data on the Ghost Hawk and Comanche, I still have other projects to handle in Europe." Christina sighs. "Promise me you'll keep Red safe?"

"Red can take care of herself." You laugh. "In truth, it's usually her looking out for ME. Honestly, if it weren't for her, I probably wouldn't be standing here right now."

And you weren't lying, either. Thinking back, Red has quite literally saved your life more than a few times.

"I can imagine." Christina laughs. "Red's always been quite the fighter."

"You know, I never would have figured that when I first met her." You grin. "Seemed a bit shy and uncertain of where she wanted to be. But now? She's taking tank witches head on without breaking a sweat. "

"That sounds like her." Christina nods. "Just make sure to reign in her in, though. I'm afraid one of these days, she might bite off more than she can chew."

"I'll keep that in mind."

"Anyways, I'll be seeing you, Captain." Christina turns around and begins walking away. "Tell Rachel I said hi."

"Will do."

You turn around to see Red bounding up to you, with Janice and Tarin trailing behind.

"Cap! Cap!" Red says, bouncing up and down. "I heard we were going to Japan! Is that true? Is it? Is it?!"

You actually have to hold back some laughter. Red was acting like a little kid hopped up on too much sugar. It was just too cute.

"Yeah, yeah we are, Red." You nod. "Excited?"

"YESSSSSSSSSS." Red fist pumps. "Maybe we can finally see Japanese witches in action! I hear they all use genuine katanas!"

"Well, we can find out when we get there." You laugh. "Come on, our flight is going to be leaving soon. We'd better board."

Inside, you, your witches, and your air crew move and secure yourself to the seats. You see some other personnel and witches board the plane as well. No doubt also hitching a ride to Japan. Red, still brimming with excitement, is literally bouncing in her seat.

You then see a witch that you swear you've seen before from somewhere, until your memory suddenly kicks in. It was that German sniper witch you met back at Disneyland. She walks past, apparently not noticing you, and takes a seat next to a pair of other witches you assume are also German.

You wait for the C-17 to take off and the loadmaster to give you the all clear before unbuckling your safety belt to take a seat beside Elsa, plopping down like it was the most natural thing in the world.

"Yo." You say nonchalantly.

"Do we know each other?" The German witch raises an eyebrow.

"Maybe not me in particular, but we did meet before, yesterday." You say, pointing over to Tarin. "She was with me."

"OH!" Elsa's eyes light up. "The PJ crew! Hah, getting deployed to Japan, too?"

"Yeah." You nod.

"Elsa, who's this?" One of the other German witches, with silver hair and a very cold stare leans out to get a good look at you."

"Oh, just some Americans I met the other day. They're pretty cool." Elsa says. "Yeah, this here is Lt. Colonel Elisa Hessler, aka the Silver Tiger."

You vaguely remember hearing that title before. The Silver Tiger was Germany's top tank witch ace, with the highest personal AFV kill count. And this wasn't just against garbage T-34s, but the real hardcore stuff like T-72s and T-80s.

"And the one with glasses here is my spotter, Lisa Ritwell."

"Hi there. I'm Captain William Pierce. United States Air Force." You say.

"A pleasure." Hessler nods curtly.

"H-Hi!" Lisa says nervously.

"Anyways, what are three German tankwitches doing on a plane to Japan?" You ask. "I don't remember Germany having particularly close ties with them."

"Ah, well, you probably wouldn't want to hear the whole story. It's really boring with lots of politics crap." Elsa rolls her eyes. "Unless you'd like to know more."

"I'd certainly like to know more." You say.

"Aw, well, I'll just let Elisa here handle it then. I'm not good with all that stuff." Elsa shrugs and leans back in her seat.

"Honestly..." Hessler shakes her head. "I'll try to make this concise. You're aware that the the Japanese armed forces are split into the two branches?"

"Yeah." You nod. "The Imperial Japanese Army and the Imperial Japanese Navy."

"And you're aware that both branches are in direct competition, right?"

"Yeah."

"How much do you know about Japan during the Martian War?"

"Not much, besides the fact that they allied with the US to fight the Martians that landed in the Pacific. They've been allies with us ever since."

"Well, points to reading the history books, I suppose." Hessler sighs. "But that's not exactly the whole story. What a lot of people conveniently forget to mention was that Japan fought a brief but brutal civil war after the Martians landed."

"What, really?" You blink.

"Well, you have to understand. The IJA and IJN at the time weren't just rivals, they considered each other honest to god enemies. The long and short of it is that the IJN ended up overthrowing the IJA, and threw their lot in with the US."

Yeah, ask this. Seems pretty damn likely.

>>
>>32748595
"Now, I don't understand. Why would the IJN on the IJA like that?" You ask. "Don't tell me there isn't some kind of other civil war cooking up?"

"Nothing of the sort." Hessler snorts. "That's just the setup. Right after the Martians landed, the IJN staged a coup and wiped out the IJA leadership. Depending on who you ask, it was either punishment for the war crimes they committed in China and Korea, or they were just using the IJA as a scapegoat to pave the way for an alliance with the US. Either way, the IJA was reorganized from the ground up post-war."

"Okay..." You say, still wondering how this all added up.

"While the modern IJA has very few links to the pre-Martian War IJA, there's still this stigma that it's connected to past war crimes, so it's not a popular organization to enlist in." Hessler continues. "Generally, the IJN is seen as more prestigious, with the IJA being a dumping ground for those who couldn't make the cut for the IJN."

"I suppose they've been trying to change that?"

"Well, the IJA is still a very conservative organization, so they've been dragging their feet on reforms for years. However, with their manpower being stretched to its limits thanks to the current war, they've actually made some major changes. First up is that the IJA is now allowing Koreans to join their ranks, which is huge because traditionally, you needed to be pureblood Japanese to get into either the IJN or IJA."

(cont)
>>
>>32749009
"That's might progressive of them." You say sarcastically. You knew that Korea, being a Japanese possession, had an odd status. Koreans were considered Japanese citizens on paper, but were still treated like second class citizens in practice.

"Naturally, their ranks have swelled with recruits to the point where they're incapable of training them on their own. Which is where we come in." Hessler points to herself and her fellow German witches. "Japan asked our government for assistance, since Germany has the reputation for having the best armored force in the world."

"I'll just pretend to agree with that."

"Our government agreed, since Japan's tanks and tank strikers are based heavily off the Leopard and use many of the same parts. It's a win win for both countries. I'm not surprised that they're reaching out to other countries for foreign aid."

Ah, now things were starting to make sense.

"So we're effectively being used as combat trainers and advisors for the IJA." You say.

"Precisely." Hessler nods. "That's the sort of long version."

"That's right!" Red nods rapidly. "What do you need to know?"

"What exactly is the situation between Japan and Korea?"

"Oh, well, for all intents and purposes, Korea is a Japanese colony. However, Japan's slowly been granting them more autonomy over the years, mostly due to pressure from the US. Right now, Korea's status I guess is something similar to the Virgin Islands for the US. They're largely autonomous, but still technically considered part of Japan. It's a weird grey area."

"I don't suppose a lot of Koreans are happy with it."

"Oh, definitely not. The country is very divided." Red says. "I mean, there's a lot of Koreans who'd rather live under the Chinese than Japan, which how China's able to hold northern Korea so easily. There's some who prefer the status quo under Japan, and the really unlucky ones who want total independence."

"Sounds like this war is going to be rough on them." You wince.

"Well, either way, I hope the Koreans come out of this okay." You frown. "It really sucks that they're stuck between China and Japan's spat."

"War and politics truly are terrible things." Janice says sadly.

"Anyways, Red, what are the IJN and IJA like?" You ask.

"Well, they're actually very similar to how the American armed forces are built." Red says. "The IJN's modeled itself after the USN, focusing on carrier groups as primary power projection, though they still run battleship and heavy cruiser groups for quick, close range strikes. Their Special Landing Forces are pretty much a carbon copy of the US Marine Corps. The IJA likewise is modeled after the US Army. Lots of foot troops, helicopters, and heavy armor. Funnily enough, there's no dedicated air force branch, so both the IJN and IJA run their own independent air forces. I heard it's a real organizational pain the ass."

"I can imagine." You say. The Navy and Marines having their own fliers was already confusing enough.

"And even though they're small, they're well trained and well equipped. A lot of their stuff is American exports or licensed models, but I've heard they're trying to focus more on domestically produced weapons systems now."

>>
>>32749994
"What kind of weapons?" You ask curiously.

"Well, as you know, a bulk of Japan's air force mostly consists of foreign planes, primarily American ones." Red continues. "You know, like F-4s, F-15s, F-16s, stuff like that. Well, there's been a lot of rumors going around that Japan's got a brand knew, domestically developed superfighter that's supposed to compete with the Vampire and Wyvern."

"Really now?"

"Well, Japan's one of the world leaders in electronics and avionics, so it's honestly not that surprising." Red shrugs. "They call it the Shinden II. Supposedly it's already been deployed and has basically wrecked the Chinese air force wherever it shows up, but then again, the Chinese air force isn't exactly the scariest of threats."

"Interesting." You nod.

Some more time passes, and slowly, one by one, the passengers begin to doze off or focus on their own activities. After a few hours, it's only you and Tarin left.

As you and your fellow passengers tumble out down the ramp, you see a single Japanese witch standing on the tarmac in front of you, arms crossed and standing proudly. At her back, you can see the unmistakeable shape of a sheathed katana.

Holly MacLeod's Rollercoaster: Final Update
-

If Holly had been looking where she was going, she'd have likely spotted the half of a striker stand she tripped over. She fell hard to the ground, yelping in surprise as her knees scraped against the pavement, her hands cutting themselves on sharp debris. She broke her fall just before her face hit the ground. Wordlessly, she picked herself up, ignoring the pain from her feet and shins.

For the first time, she actually looked around and took in the devastation. Nothing of military value had been spared. Burnt out hulks of spare strikers littered the edge of the massive crater, a lone striker unit pointing symbolically towards the sky. What little that survived the missile strike had been flung well outside of the hangar, a cavalcade of ruined maintenance equipment mixed in with bits of everything else. Much of the debris was still surprisingly hot.

Nobody could have survived the strike.

Holly staggered over towards a larger pile of wreckage. She tossed aside warped sheet metal and smaller pieces of debris, her familiar manifested. The arm that had been kicked by the nightwitch throbbed in protest. She ignored it.

She saw the burned remnants of a poncho, trapped under a half-melted girder.

Holly tried to lift the girder, but the warped hulk proved to be more than she could handle. She kicked at it uselessly, and it shifted slightly before settling deeper into the wreckage. Holly tried again, shouting with effort, the glow of magic around her body becoming blinding. The girder held its place for a moment longer, bent, and then finally moved just enough for her to free the poncho from the rubble. Holly frantically turned it inside out, looking for a very specific name written in a very specific place: she'd chosen not to remove it from her new poncho out of respect for the original owner—

The collar around the neckline had burned away from the missile strike.
>>
>>32750907
She tossed the poncho to the ground as though it had burned her hand, shaking her head in denial.

'It doesn’t mean anything, it doesn't it doesn't it doesn't. Could belong to anyone, it’s standard issue equipment.'

She stumbled away in a daze, wandering closer to the crater, her legs feeling weaker with every step. She wanted to find some place to sit down.

She couldn't understand how everything had gone so wrong.

-

"Ma'am, are you alright?"

A man waved as he rushed up towards her. Holly looked up weakly at the source of the shouting. Still feeling lightheaded, she blinked at the striker she was sitting on, then at the man.

"Holy shit! Is that your striker?! Are you hurt, do you—"

"Not mine." She twitched her arm towards where she left her strikers lying on the ground. "Just got home."

"It's not safe, Colonel. Could be secondaries." Seeing that she wasn't seriously injured, the man sighed with relief. "How about we get you away from here?"

He offered a hand to help the Colonel up from her seat.

"Okay," she whispered.

He obviously meant nothing when he placed a hand on her back to help her move along, no insult intended when he had taken hold of one of her arms to help her stay upright. He was merely concerned. She knew that.

It just felt wrong.

"Mudhens, ma'am?" The technician eyed the patch on her shoulder.

"Yes."

"So this hangar was..." He averted his eyes as Holly looked up at him again.

"Have you seen a Wilkins?" She asked.

"A who?"

"Will Wilkins. Tech Sergeant. Have you seen him?"

"I'm sorry, ma'am, I don't know him. I'm assigned to Spellcaster. When the raid happened, this place was one of the first ones to get hit—but we had air raid alarms goin' for a while, so..." He trailed off when he saw her crestfallen expression.

'It wouldn't have mattered if I'd rushed the wing home.'

"I see," she said, allowing the Navy technician to push her towards a waiting jeep.
>>
>>32750941
"You look hurt, Colonel. I can call for a medic or a healwitch if you—"

"I don't need anything anymore." Her voice was hollow as she smiled up at him sadly, taking in a shuddering breath. "Thank you."

"Colonel, I really insist you get—"

"I'll take 'er off your hands, Navy." Chris was suddenly at the tech's side, ushering him away.

"You got it, ma'am..." He shook his head before jogging off to join another group of ground crew arriving by truck.

Chris waved at him before turning towards Holly, reaching out to her for a hug. Holly pushed her away, grimacing when she saw freshly applied bandages wrapped around the blonde's stomach, shaking her head as she remembered watching her fall lifelessly towards the ground. Chris was a walking representation of her own failures as a commander, a wingwitch, and a friend. Holly understood exactly how that nightwitch felt as she watched the steelwing she was protecting go down in flames.

"You're not bleeding anymore—" Holly’s voice gave out for a moment. "That's... that's good."

"Callie took good care of me; a full healwitch can take care of the rest when they're not as busy."

"Uh-huh."

"So..." Chris paced around her friend awkwardly. "Buzz and I have made arrangements for the wing to temporarily house our equipment over in Spellcaster's hangar. They have more than enough space for us as is."

"Uh-huh."

"They're bringing transports to help get our strikers over there. Most of us are too out of it to taxi 'em over personally."

"Grenadine and Gucci's flights?"

"They're still on their way back." Chris leaned closer to Holly, inspecting her shoulder. "Come on, let me—"

"It's fine."

Chris wasn't convinced, but decided not to press the issue further. She tugged at the collar of Holly's coat. "Let's... let's get your strikers ready to go."

-
>>
>>32750974
Holly’s strikers had fallen lengthwise to the ground after she’d ejected. One of the engine nozzles was badly bent, the wings on both strikers sheared away from the impact. They would likely be considered write-offs, cannibalized for spare parts. The two witches gathered up the larger pieces that had broken off from the striker units. Occasionally, Holly caught Chris looking at her, turning away when their eyes met. Chris did her best to strike a conversation, but after several minutes, it became obvious that she wasn't going to get much in the way of a response.

It didn't stop her from trying.

Chris explained what she'd heard from other witches as she landed: the Russian supersub attacking Elemdorf had in fact been destroyed by none other than Spellcaster squadron. Chris wanted to invite them to the witch barracks to celebrate their actions—to celebrate everyone’s actions. She even insisted—threatened—that Frank Bishop would have to be present. She talked about how she couldn't wait to get rotated to a non-essential base for R&R, even if it was just for a few days. She reminded Holly to call home as soon as possible to let her parents know that she was okay.

Holly stayed silent, not even rising to the bait of Bishop being allowed into the barracks. She knew her friend was concerned; she just couldn't bring herself to respond.

Picking up one of the larger pieces of wing from her strikers, Holly remembered Will bragging about how not a single one of 3rd Wing's strikers had suffered a downcheck under the watch of his maintenance team, including her personal units that she had just recklessly tossed aside. She found herself staring at the hangar's remains, dropping what was in her hands to the ground.

'He worked on them this morning. He was there.'

"Holly?"

'They've never performed better than they did today, and I threw them away like garbage.'

"Holly, are you okay?" Chris' voice wavered.
>>
>>32751008
Holly had to blink away the blurriness from her eyes to see the concern written across Chris' face.

"You do know that there was nothing we could have done here, right?" Chris stepped forward, pointing at her bandages. "That this wasn't your fault? That none of this was your fault?"

When she only got a nod in response, Chris grabbed Holly by the shoulders and gave her a firm shake. "For God's sake, you did everything you could! We all did!"

Holly curled up into a ball next to a striker, hugging her legs to her chest. She buried her face against her knees, shoulders shaking with every breath as she struggled to keep everything bottled up inside.

'Not now. Not now.'

"The hangar doesn't mean anything," Chris said, placing a hand on her back. "I know what you've been thinking since we got back... and even if that *is* what happened, it isn't your fault."

When it was clear Holly wasn't going to respond, Chris pulled her into a hug, her friend hanging almost limp in her grasp.

"Don't shut me out. I want to help you, even if you don't think I can! We've gone through this before! Talk to me! Yell at me! Tell me to fuck off!" Her voice dropped to a whisper. "I almost lost *you* today too, remember? Don't do this to me. Say something... anything...."

Holly collapsed back to the ground as Chris let her go, fighting to stay in control.

"... I'll leave, if that's what you want. I'm sorry." Chris tried to walk away, but her legs seemed rooted in place. She stared at Holly, silently pleading for her friend to talk.

"Please. Don't," Holly sobbed through clenched teeth, her hands balled into fists at her side. "I didn't mean to—"

Chris sat next to her, putting an arm over her shoulders.

"I've got you, Holly. I'm here."

-
>>
>>32751043
Chris had tried her level best to convince Holly that the absence of the 3rd Wing's ground crew was not proof that the worst had happened, despite not believing her own words.

In retrospect, perhaps that was why she had failed.

She didn't dare suggest that Holly's fears had merit, that she'd personally been unable to find a single crew member she was familiar with. That she'd heard an unconfirmed report of emergency shelters being reduced to... something best left unsaid from direct missile strikes. Holly didn't need to hear any of that. She only needed to know that Chris was at her side.

For a short while, Holly MacLeod wasn't an Air Force officer. She was just a young woman who believed she had lost something precious after hours of almost losing so much more.

Eventually, Holly got the worst of it out of her system. She only sniffled occasionally, hiding her face in anguished shame. She didn't feel better, but she would at least be able to handle debriefing once all the girls returned.

Anything after that... Chris wasn't certain.

The two witches leaned against each other, watching as the sunset gave way to the night sky. Chris had made sure to point Holly away from the shattered hangar, anything she could do to help her friend. She kept Holly close for warmth as Alaska started to remind them of how cold it could get. In vain, she prayed to find a certain Tech Sergeant among the personnel working recovery duty.

"There's our ride." Chris pointed at a truck that was pulling up to them. She stood up first, giving Holly's hand a squeeze as she helped her to her feet. "You know, I can move your strikers by myself—"

"I can help." Holly shook her head vehemently. "I have to help."

It was hard to see her apologize one last time to her strikers as they finished loading them onto the truck, to see her so close to breaking down again.

-
>>
>>32751069
Holly politely refused to ride the truck back to the barracks, not wanting to be close to her strikers. Chris also refused, not about to let Holly out of her sight. They would walk barefoot a fair way to get home, but that was just how it would have to be.

Holly limped slightly with every step despite trying hard not to show further weakness. She had to stop to rest at least twice, wincing each time she sat down. Chris had offered to run off to find a healwitch for her, but Holly had refused.

"There's people who need them more than I do right now." She had said, averting her eyes.

Holly never explained how she'd hurt her legs; Chris didn't ask. She could guess how it happened, along with the scrapes and dried blood on her hands. She figured that the less was said about it, the better.

Chris had watched Holly's expression harden during the walk: gears in her head were turning. The sadness was still there, but there was anger in every step. Anger at the Russians, at herself.... Chris didn't know if she could help her friend. The thought almost made her feel physically ill.

Eventually, they made their way to the barracks, mostly unscathed save for some shattered windows and bits of shrapnel scattered on the ground. A number of Quonset huts to the east hadn't been so lucky. An increased number of armed guards stood at the front entrance, joined by a squad of tank witches who ran laps around the perimeter shouting a particularly raunchy cadence about a man who didn't deserve them as much as the strikers they were wearing.

"I know you won't listen to me," Chris said, "but I think you should leave the paperwork for tomorrow."

"Can't do that," Holly replied firmly. "Those Flankers we fought trying to rescue ARKHAM were too dangerous and the way those witches flew... all that has got to get to people who can better analyze it."

"I understand, but—"
>>
>>32751110
"I spent an hour being a little girl! I can spend the rest of the day being an officer—" Holly shook her head, trying to rein herself in. "I didn't mean to snap at you. I'm sorry."

"You didn't snap at me."

"I'm sorry anyway." Holly picked up the pace of her walk, grimacing from the pain in her legs.

She was about to say more when the screeching of tires caught her attention. A jeep had sped towards to the barracks, quickly stopped by two guards. The driver stepped out with his hands up, arguing loudly as the guards closed in on the him demanding identification. A witch stomped out of the barracks and quickly put herself between the driver and the infantrymen, telling the latter to "fuck off for a minute."

"That dude owes Callie a favor..." Chris said.

Holly growled, her walk turning into a run. She made a beeline for the jeep and its driver.

“Holly?” Chris called after her. "I think Buzz got it taken care of!"
>>
>>32751129
-

Holly heard the very one-sided conversation between the driver and the witch as she fast approached.

"Jesus, sergeant!" Buzz Buzz shouted. "As you can see, the Army's got our barracks on lock-down and they're a liiittle trigger happy at the moment. Something about missile strikes? Probably shouldn't have driven like an idiot, huh? "

The man raised a finger to start protesting, but Callie quickly cut him off. "You can come back for your ladyfriend later. Not that you'd be allowed inside—witch barracks is off limits to men. Order of Colonel MacLeod; take it up with her."

The jeep driver cocked his head to the side, crossing his arms. "I'm—"

"Leaving!" Buzz Buzz stepped forward, pushing the man towards the driver's side door. "I can take a message for you and your boys if it's that important—"

She cut herself off, eyes wide as she acknowledged the oncoming Colonel behind him. "Colonel! He was just on his! He's not one of mine, you know I don't even—"

Holly glared at her as she strode up, stopping just behind the sergeant in question. "I'll take over for you, Major."

"And I'm dismissed..." Callie squeaked before quickly retreating back towards the barracks, past the two now very amused guards.

"I'd like to know what you're doing trying to enter my wing's barracks with a jeep, sergeant. TURN YOURSELF AROUND SO I CAN SEE YOU!" Holly snapped.

A small voice in the back of her head told her to control herself, but a much louder one snarled at her to rip into the poor guy. She clasped a hand firmly on his shoulder, inwardly cursing his height as she spun him around. His uniform was a complete mess: singed in some places, covered in soot mostly everywhere else. His name patch was torn in half, his shoulder insignia missing, There were a few scrapes on his knuckles, a cut across his forehead—

Holly staggered back, pressing herself against the jeep.

"Hey Holly," He said with a smile.

William Wilkins was alive.

"Th-the hangar," she stammered, pointing a finger at him. "It's gone!"

"Yeah... but the air raid warnings came early; got out with time to spare. We managed to bring the wing's personal effects with us." He reached into the back of the jeep and produced Holly's cowboy hat. "I saved your hat."

"Wh-where were you!?" Holly cried. "We g-got back! We got back and and all I saw was just a big crater and I found a poncho and I thought you were—"

Her voice gave out as he placed the hat on her head.

"Our shelter's group got volunteered for recovery work on the other side of the base." Will patted his uniform for emphasis, dust and soot coming off in large puffs. "I wanted to see you as soon as I heard you'd gotten back, but I couldn't just break away from that."

Reaching back into the jeep again, he brought out Holly's boots, along with another pair. "Think fast, LTC!"

Will tossed the second pair to Chris. She easily caught them, took one look at Holly, then at Will, and then quietly and quickly gave the two some space.

"A-are you hurt?" Holly managed to find her voice again, reaching out to him with trembling hands. "What happened to you?"

He tried to hand her boots over. They slipped through her fingers and fell to the ground.

"Nicks and scratches, just digging through rubble." He frowned at her exposed shoulder. "Does it hurt?"

"Not really, it's better now," Holly sniffled. "I was worried for you."

"Sorry," he said. "If it means anything, I was pretty worried for you, too."

"It means a lot."

She took a tentative step closer to him, close enough to touch him, close enough to know she wasn't imagining things; close enough that she was pressed up against him, looking up into his eyes, tearing up as he smiled down at her.

"It means everything," she whispered.
>>
>>32751200
She stood on her toes, placing one hand on the back of his head to bring him closer still, feeling the heat from his face. She shuddered as one of his arms slipped around the small of her back, trembled as his fingers brushed up the side of her neck and up to her chin, tilting her head towards him. She pulled on his shirt collar and drew him into a kiss, not giving a damn about anything else.

"Welcome back," Will said after they parted.

"Uh huh."

Holly pushed him against the jeep, her familiar manifesting and her heart racing as they kissed again, Will lifting her off the ground as they came together. For an intense moment, they forgot the world around them, forgot about witches, steelwings, routine maintenance, the USAF, everything. There was only Holly MacLeod and William Wilkins, burning together in spite of the cold. Unfortunately, they could only forget the world for so long.

Chris and Callie's gasps of shock didn't help.

-

They could not spend that night together. Too much to get done and not nearly enough time to do it. After Will finished delivering the personal effects, he needed to get back to the rest of his people to continue assisting with the clean up. Afterwards, they would have to make a preliminary assessment of the wing's strikers.

As for Holly, she held the wing's debriefing, which was really just a short pep talk and a request for reports to be in her mailbox as soon as possible. There would be time for a more extensive debriefing among the many that was sure to ensue over the next few days—but for now, she just wanted her girls to get as much rest as possible.

There'd been a small celebration for having done their part in the air battle, but most of the women were too tired for more than a movie and some hot cocoa. Holly had retired to her room almost immediately. She remembered starting her own report while lying in bed: as terrible an idea as they came. She fell asleep in minutes.

Holly awoke to sweaty bed sheets and pain.

Everything hurt. Sharp pain shot through her legs, especially around her hips, reminders of the intense maneuvering she'd demanded from herself the other day. Her ribs still chaffed from wearing a tightly-buckled combat vest and webbing for almost eight hours straight; she could feel where certain buckles had dug into her body. She found stinging rings of red skin around her thighs, marking where the striker interface began, light burns evidence of just how hard she'd pushed her magical ability.

Biting her lower lip, she sat up in bed, hissing with agony when her feet touched the ground. It wasn't enough to stop her from moving, but definitely enough to convince her that moving should be done very slowly and carefully. She tried to stretch, whimpering through each exercise.

'Gawd...'

Raker had tended to her after the evening debriefing, but she had looked so exhausted herself that Holly had felt obligated to cut her own treatment short. Holly groaned, stumbling around the room and almost tripping over yesterday's clothes adrift all over the floor. She was up two hours early, but knew that sleep wasn't going to come back.

Chris was still asleep in her bed. She snored loudly, unaware that one of her legs was hanging off the side of the mattress, her bed sheets tossed aside and leaving her mostly exposed to the air.

'Better to prepare for a long day,' Holly thought, gathering what she needed for a shower.

She stood almost stock still under a shower head for an hour, letting the hot water burn away some of her discomfort. She still felt tired, but a little bit more limber. Coffee, fresh clothes, the lingering warmth from the shower, and Will's poncho helped somewhat.

"Mornin' Colonel," Buzz Buzz waved at her in the hall on the way to the office. "Smoochie smoochiiiiie~"

"Mornin' Major," Holly sighed, rifling through her inbox and finding it filled to the brim with things that required her attention. The war on paperwork never ended.

She all but collapsed into her office chair, glowering at the stack of work on the desk in hopes that it would shrink; the papers won out. She picked up the first packet after another sip of coffee.

As she'd asked at the end of yesterday's debrief, there were forty seven reports to sign off on. Her own remained incomplete somewhere next to her bed, but she didn't feel like getting out of the chair to retrieve it. Rolling her chair over to a file cabinet, she sought out the necessary forms—

The door suddenly swung open, the room seemingly growing colder.

Holly didn't even have to look up to know who that was. "Come on in, Kazanski."

"Good morning, Colonel. I see you're used to that already." The Ice Witch made herself comfortable in a chair, grinning the whole time. "I'm here to report that Spellcaster's being reassigned."

"Oh?" That caught Holly's attention. She wasn't exactly sure how to feel about that.

"Yes ma'am," Kazanski nodded. "Driftwood Bay, initially, but apparently there was a mix-up. It's now Adak, unless they change it up on us again mid-flight..."

"I see." Holly frowned at the folder in Kazanski's hands. "That's for me, isn't it?"

Kazanski laughed. "It's not as bad as you think. Just signing off on our transfer orders."

There was a slight pause. "We'll be out of your hair soon enough."

"Huh." Holly flipped through the paperwork, fishing for her pen somewhere on the desk. Kazanski found it first and handed it to her.

"You look beat, MacLeod."

"Worried about me?" Holly smirked, hunting for the fields she needed to sign off on. "Looks in order to me."

"Worried?" Kazanski snorted. "Hardly."
>>
>>32751269
"There, signed and done." Holly blew on the ink to help it dry faster, then handed the packet back over to Kazanski, fighting off a yawn.

"Um, how'd things on your end go?" Kazanski asked.

"Met some Flanker-Cs." Holly said, deciding to leave it at that. Kazanski cringed in sympathy. "We accounted for ourselves well, SEAD went off without a hitch... then Elemdorf got hit and everything went nuts."

"Helluva shock, huh?" Kazanki flipped through the paperwork. "Thanks Colonel."

"I heard Spellcaster took out the sub..."

"Spellcaster?" Kazanski laughed again. "Bishop and Merlin killed it. The rest of us were just there to look pretty! We were flying in on it, right? And we're trying to figure out how to kill it, and the best I came up with is, not kidding, 'Even something that big can die. We just gotta figure out how!'"

It hurt to laugh, but Holly laughed with Kazanski anyway. After the two witches settled down, Kazanski stood from her chair to leave.

"Thanks Colonel. It was... interesting serving with you, for what it's worth."

"Sure was, Commander..." Holly joined her at the door, offering a handshake. "Good luck with your new assignment."

"Yeah."

"Can you do me a favor, Commander?"

"I think you're the one owing me a favor, MacLeod—"

"I know, I know!" Holly sighed. "Look, can you pass a message to Bishop and Lieutenant Wells for me? Tell 'em that Colonel Holly MacLeod of the 3rd Witch Wing sends her thanks for taking out that sub."

Kazanski squinted at her. "You falling for my pilot?"

"WHAT? NO!" Holly cried out. The Navy witch did not look entirely convinced. "Wh-where'd that even come from!?"

"Keep acting innocent." She gave Holly an evil smile. "I'll see about passing the kind word along, Colonel."

"I appreciate it," Holly said. "And that favor I owe you? Ask me for something and if it's in my capability, I will get it done. You have my word."

"Alright then, MacLeod," Kazanski nodded. "I'll hold you to it."

They stood awkwardly at the door way, Holly still feeling terrible for having lied to Kazanski. It was something that couldn't be undone—if anything, Holly now better understood what Kazanski had gone through, and hated the fact that she'd put a fellow witch through something like that. She wanted to try and make up for that somehow... but with Spellcaster being reassigned, there was a chance they'd never meet again.

It was typically military.

"Fly safe, Navy." Holly said, hoping she sounded unworried.

"You too, Chair Force."

And just like that, Spellcaster was gone from Holly's life.

-

Days later, Elemdorf continued to recover from the attack.

Everywhere she looked, Holly found more evidence that the war had come to her base. Construction of new aircraft bunkers and hangars continued in earnest, along with a new control tower. She could take a walk in nearly any direction and run into a new air defense position. It still frightened her to think about how things could have gone differently... but she didn't let herself think about it for very long. Spellcaster—more specifically, Frank Bishop—had saved the base from further bombardment, and that was all that mattered.

The aftermath of the battle in the north had been more positive than Holly had predicted. The Russians were collapsing across the entire front, falling back further to the North even faster than the planners had expected. The Army actually couldn't pursue them fast enough without stretching logistics thin. For now, USAF was sending regular steelwing and ground attack witch strikes on the fleeing reds. Spellcaster hadn't been able to locate the Soviet's flying carrier, but ultimately, it never proved itself capable of influencing the outcome of the fighting. It was only a matter of time, the Generals were saying.

>Kazanski squinted at her. "You falling for my pilot?"

Icelady laying claim to what's hers...well spellcasters.

Also, I';m surprise she didn't mention bishops probably putting up a sub as a kill on the side of his plane

The deep Soviet penetration into US airspace remained a mystery. The nightwitches who had harried patrols in the week preceding the big battle had all but vanished, along with the “Super Flankers.” The defenses around AWACS and tanker formations were being bolstered: a lesson learned too late for ARKHAM, the fallen tankers of TEXACO, and the steelwings who had been assigned to defend them.

The reports from 3rd Wing about their encounter with the Super Flankers had actually gotten the attention of some fairly important people. While the wing was technically given five days of downtime which took them off the patrol roster and longer ranged missions, Holly was finding herself in the office every day.

A Matron by the name of Longstreet had contacted Holly, wanting the perspective of a witch who had fought these Super Flankers. She wanted as detailed a description as possible of everything the Flankers did, the weapons they used—in particular the missiles. She had especially wanted details on the witches that had flown with them. Matron Longstreet had stressed that personal opinions were more than welcome.

And so Holly was giving her personal opinions, at the cost of her ass growing sore in an office chair day after day.

A stack of technical manuals for steelwings took up a large portion of her desk. Next to it was a second stack of books written by witches who'd served in combat during the World Wars, the Martian War, and South East Asia. Next to all that was a binder filled with copies of her entire wing's after action reports. If she wasn't typing on her word processor or staring blankly at the monitor, she was reading one of those books. When she wasn't in the chair, she was often pacing madly around the room, making phone calls to people who might be able to help turn the research she was doing into an analysis worthy of a Matron's attention.

She was a bit worried about the length. She'd written essays over the course of her training but nothing quite like this. Thankfully, Chris was being incredibly helpful with the analysis when she wasn't asking questions about Holly and Will's “progress.”

Holly stared out the window of her office, sighing as she slumped against the desk. Chris had run off to grab some food for herself and Holly. Will had called ahead an hour ago, saying he wasn't going to be able to break away from his own duties for lunch. She understood how he felt, told him not to apologize. She didn't want to distract Will from his work.: there was a time and place for everything.

It wasn't that they didn't try to make extra time for each other. Holly had seen a movie with Will almost every night since the attack. They shared dinner, they played NES. When their schedules allowed, they were together. That said, she still couldn't help but feel a little disappointed. She was seeing him later that night, but...

'Maybe I will go see him now anyway,' she told herself. She straightened up in her chair, smoothed out her uniform shirt. She flashed herself a smile into a small mirror. It would be fun; he couldn't possibly mind a surprise like this. She'd just have to get back before Chris—

Knocking. On her door. Damnit. She slumped in her chair again.

"Yeah... It's op—"

"Hiya, Colonel!" Frank Bishop pushed his way into the room, a small box in hand.

What.

"Here's your Christmas present!" He placed the box firmly on her desk, knocking into one of the book stacks on her desk in the process. He cringed as it leaned precariously on the edge. Holly's mouth dropped open, but she couldn't find anything to say.

"Can't stay and chat, gotta fly. Stay safe, have fun!" He one-eightied and out the the door before it had started to close on its own.

"Huh?!" she asked the empty room, answered by both book stacks collapsing off the desk.

'Whyyyyyyyyyyyy?'

She inspected the wrapped box. It was a pretty shoddy job, almost like the person at the Hallmark wrapping it didn't care that much for looks, but rather for speed. The wrap itself was a glossy red, the ribbon green. A small card dedicated the present to: “Col. Holly MacLeod, USAF.”

Holly lifted the box. It was pretty light, the weight somewhat off-center. She'd need to find a present for Will some time soon.

She carefully undid the ribbon, pulled the tape on the wrap and freed the box. It was generic: no label, no picture showing what it was. She gave it another light shake and heard something *tink* inside. Opening the box, she found a misshapen lump covered in brown tissue paper.

"A mug," Holly deadpanned. Digging it free from the tissue paper, Holly gave it a spin. She couldn't help but smile at the bold block letters spelling out “NAVY” on it. Somehow, it wouldn't have felt right to get anything else from him.

"Well played, Bishop," Holly said. "Merry Christmas."

"Sooo, a Navy mug." Chris observed, in between bites of a gyro from the chow hall.

"Yep."

"And you're drinking coffee from it."

"Right again." Holly took another sip. "Could be worse."

"Did you disinfect it first?"

Both witches laughed.

"Remind me to buy him something in return," Holly said.

"So you're saying it's on?" Chris grinned.

"It's so freakin' on."

"Are you gonna send it to him? It'll probably get to him late if you do."

"Nope, he gave me this in person. It's only right that I do the same."

"Well, that's certainly very Holly MacLeod of you." Chris rolled her eyes. "Headed over to Will's place tonight?"

"Uh huh..."

"We're missin' you here in the barracks, girl!" Chris reached over the table to flick Holly on the ear, but found herself easily parried. "Find yerself a man and now you just ditch your wingwitch every chance you get!"

"I'm sorry! I can't help it!"

"Kiddiiiiing! I'm happy for you, Eagle. Really!" Leaning back in her chair, Chris kicked her legs up onto the desk. "Back to the line tomorrow, huh?"

"Yeah... back to normal,” Holly sighed, savoring the word. “Back to normal."

She took another sip.

Well, this sure took a long time to get done, didn't it? But it's done now. Yaaaaaay

Thanks for reading, everyone. Seriously. It's been fun to write my little piece in this quest, and I do appreciate your patience in between delays.

Lets see, some extra special thanks are due.

Ghostdivision: for continuing SWQ with Strikers '89, and for letting me writefag with reckless abandon in so many threads. Sideties and delicious brown, forever.

Nonamebrand: Mastermind, planner of successful bank heists. My ever suffering editor who has managed to take my garbage and make it more presentable. I think I owe him like a million pizzas. It's nice to have someone who can pick your stuff apart and tell you when your shit is really shit. Looking forward to seeing where Napoleon goes from here!

Dante41: Another member of the cabal, another idea guy, and another person I owe for all the time I've monopolized trying to get my own writing out the door. Can vibrate through solid matter, and is all business all the time. Yells if you shoot hostages in Payday 2. I owe this guy some writing. Also, FINISH PBS FAGGOT

Artyfag: For opening whole new markets, right here. Also for being one of the beta readers for muh writing, and being another IRC voice to bounce ideas off of. Consumes whole formations of M60s and cannot find the fucks to give about it. WRITE RUSTANKS FASTER

MercCommand: A pretty good QM who riles up the waifufags and is a p.cool guy. We shot hostages in Payday 2 together when that was a thing earlier this year, which was always fun. I think I'm responsible for some of his quests getting late updates.

MightyM0use: maus tw89 pls, pls maus

Planefag: for starting SWQ, and making people laugh, and making people mad.

If I've forgotten anyone, I'm sorry.
