...this morning, I had breakfast with a strange psychic girl that I just met, and now I've been invited to have dinner with another strange psychic girl that I just met. Today has been all kinds of weird.

But I -am- getting kind of hungry, and far be it from me to turn down a dinner invitation.

"Sure, why not," I say.
"Wonderful!" Charlotte claps her hands together. "There's this lovely restaurant on the ground floor of the hotel that I'm staying at, and..."

Huh? She's staying at a hotel?

Then again, she did mention that she's from out of town... obviously she wouldn't have an apartment here or anything. Now I'm kind of curious find out where exactly it is that she's staying.

I'm following a strange girl who I just met to a hotel... I just KNOW that Allison would rag on me forever if she knew about this.

"Hm?" Charlotte turns to me.
"N- nothing!" I rapidly shake my head.

Oh man, did I just say that out loud?

"Sooo, you mentioned that you don't usually eat with -humans-?" I ask, trying to steer the subject away from myself.
"Oh..." Charlotte sighs. "I've been on the road a lot lately, so I've mostly just been eating with Loki and a few of my other friends. But it does get kind of lonely not being able to fully appreciate a proper meal with someone else, you know? Crows don't exactly have the most discerning tastes."
"Yeah, I guess," I shrug.

So she has other "friends" too... I wonder if they're all crows like Loki.

I up following Charlotte for about twenty minutes, passing by the park as we go. Finally, we end up in front of a really expensive-looking hotel.

"And here we are, my home for the time being!" Charlotte says, holding out her hand towards the building as if she's showing the place off.
"Wow, it's pretty nice," I reply.
"It is indeed!" she says as she opens the door for me. "The service is excellent, and the staff is more... accommodating in certain matters than other places that I've stayed at."

I don't really understand what that's supposed to mean, but sure.

As we walk through the front entrance and into the hotel itself, I find that this place is even more impressive inside than it is outside. I can't even imagine how much money it would cost to stay here.

"Hmm..." Charlotte stops in the middle of the front lobby and turns towards the elevator. "Would you mind waiting here? I need to stop by my room for a little bit, but I'll be right back."

"Alright."
"Sorry for making you wait like this right after we got here... I'll try and get back as quickly as I can, though!"

With that, Charlotte scurries over to an open elevator and disappears inside. As for me, I make my way over to one of the couches that she pointed out and take a seat... ah, it feels good to finally be able to sit down after walking such a long way.

After getting all nice and comfy, I decide to pass the time by looking around this hotel lobby.

Businessmen... fancily-dressed women... and there's a couple with a certain look in their eyes that I really wish I wasn't familiar with. There's a lady in a cocktail dress, some more guys in suits...

...and come to think of it, Charlotte herself is wearing a super fancy dresse that looks like something that one of Theresa's figures would be wearing.

I must look so incredibly out of place right now.

And then I see that it's another guy in a suit... but he's wearing a nametag. Maybe he works here?

"Sorry if I startled you..." he says, "I was just wondering if you needed some assistance?"
"Eh?" I blurt out. "N- no, I'm just waiting for someone, that's all.

Of course I'm nervous! Hell, I'm still half-worried that stormtroopers are gonna come flooding into this place and take me prisoner or something!

The hotel guy then hurries off, apologizing the entire time until he's finally out of sight.

She seems pretty annoyed.

"Let me guess, he thought that you were working for him as well?" Charlotte asks.
"Yeah, before I told him otherwise," I reply.
"It figures..." she holds her hand to her temples and shakes her head. "Anyways, Mr. Gauthier is a young businessman who mostly acts as an investor," she says. "Land development, the funding of business startups, that kind of thing."

"Fine with me," I reply.

Getting up from the couch, I follow Charlotte through the lobby and into a restaurant that's connected to the hotel itself. This place looks really upscale and I feel even more out of place here than I did in the lobby.

Luckily, we don't have to wait very long to get seated.

"Everything they serve here is delicious," Charlotte says as she opens her own menu and begins poring over the pages.
"Umm if you say so," I reply while opening my own menu.

After ordering a water (there's no way in hell I'm paying four dollars for freaking pepsi), I try and get back to what we were talking about in the lobby.

"So umm..." I begin, "what exactly do you do for this Gauthier guy?"
"Oh, sorry for getting distracted there!" Charlotte laughs nervously. "Well... I used to act as his daughter's bodyguard for a time, but lately my work has been shifted to whatever job he thinks would be suited for a person with my... skill set."
"You mean your Branch?" I ask. "So he knows about that stuff too?"
"He does indeed," she nods. "I was actually sent here on his direct order."

After taking a sip of her lemonade (I would have sworn that she was the type to order wine, but then I remembered that she's still under the drinking age), Charlotte continues talking.

"Officially, my job is to retrieve a certain book from whatever person in this city has it, along with collecting information on the Branches of anyone who's happened to read it," Charlotte says.

She then pulls out a flip phone and starts fiddling around it before holding it out so that I can see its screen.

"This is the book that I'm trying to find," Charlotte says. "It's the same as what that Irene person told you about... you wouldn't happen to have seen anyone walking around with a copy of it, would you?"

Yup, that is definitely the same book that both Mina and Theresa have.

"I can't say that I have," I say. "But if that thing really is able to give people super powers, it shouldn't be to surprising that whoever has it wouldn't carry it around out in the open."
"Yes, I know," Charlotte sighs. "But it can't hurt to ask, right?"
"I guess not," I shrug. "But, umm... how can you even be sure that the book's in this town to begin with? Is there like, some kind of spike in Branch activity or something?"

I definitely haven't noticed anything weird on the news... aside from a certain attack on a car that I'm pretty sure is Charlotte's fault.

"No," she shakes her head, "and that's actually what I'm trying to prevent. If the book that implants Seeds begins to circulate, any number of dangerous Branches would begin to manifest... not to mention if it caused a Gardener to manifest, then things would have the potential to go completely unmaneageable."

>[1/?]
>>
>>32748674
>[2/2]

Yeah, I can definitely see how that would be a problem.

"As for your first question, we got word of a certain website that was distributing the book. But before we could locate the people running it and shut them down, certain others beat us to the punch," Charlotte says, scowling. "Luckily, we were able to obtain a list containing all the cities that they shipped to before they were caught."
"And this city is one of them?" I ask.
"Yes," she nods. "So now I'm trying to retrieve the book, obtain information on the Branches of those who read it, and do all of this before some other organization can do the same."

Whoa, so this is like some kind of race to get them.

"And I'm stuck doing all of this without any real backup..." Charlotte sighs. "I can mostly handle myself just fine, but it'll be rather dangerous for me if our competitors send multiple people with Branches to this city."

Charlotte seems like a pretty nice girl, and now I'm starting to feel kind of bad for her.

"I'm not sure how much good it'll do," I say, "but maybe I can help?"
"Wha?" Charlotte stares at me for a few seconds. "Th... that won't be necessary, it's far too dangerous for someone like you who doesn't even know what her Branch is yet."

She does have a point there.

"It's not like I'm asking to join in some kind of wizard battle or anything," I say, "but, umm... I can still keep an eye open for Branch stuff, you know? If I spot someone with the book or if that Synapse thing happens."

I was getting REALLY worried about the prospect of having to blow all my money on this place's overpriced menu.

There is absolutely no way in hell that I would ever be able to pull off dressing like that.

"N- no," I smile weakly. "you don't have to go you of your way for me like that."
"Well if you ever decide to change your mind," Charlotte shrugs. "I used to make dresses for Mr. Gauthier's daughter and she was just the most adorable thing..."
"Mmmmmaybe I'll keep it in mind," I reply.

To my infinite gratitude, the waitress shows up at the table with our food before Charlotte can try and convince me to become her dress buddy. Charlotte's steak smells delicious, and my mouth is watering just from looking at my own food.

Penne with roasted chicken in an alfredo sauce, with a side of tomato soup!

The penne is just the right consistency, the chicken is cooked to perfection, and the alfredo sauce ties the whole thing together to make everything just so incredibly delicious!

oh dear god if I could cook like this I would get so fat

While eating as slowly as I can so as to fully enjoy this expensive meal that Charlotte is so kindly paying for, I see that she's enjoying her food just as much as I am. She's slicing into the steak like a pro while also taking small ladylike bites... it's pretty much the exact opposite of Irene's little show from this morning.

She'd probably down that entire steak in like a single gulp.

By the time I'm finishing off the soup, my stomach is very much pleased. While it's not like I'm eating junk food all the time, my diet's been pretty devoid of anything this good since my parents moved away.

Looking over at Charlotte, I see that she's finished eating pretty much at the same time as me. After waving the waitress down and paying for the bill, the two of us finally make out way out of the restaurant.

"How did you like your food?" Charlotte says as the two of us head out into the lobby.
"It was great," I reply. "Thanks for footing the bill."
"Oh, that was no problem at all!" she says with a warm smile. "But I think that we may have taken too long in there..."

Charlotte points outside, and it's already pitch-black. Crap.

"Umm, would you like for me to walk you home?" Charlotte asks. "I wouldn't really feel comfortable having you going out there by yourself when it's this late..."

"Yeah, that might be nice," I say. "I already got randomly saved after being attacked by a dog once today, I don't want to risk not having someone to back me up if it shows up again."
"Oh my," Charlotte replies. "Well I'll be sure to keep you safe from whatever animal is stupid enough to try and hurt you," she says, crossing her arms.

Safety in numbers and all that... not to mention that she can talk to animals.

With that matter settled, the two of us leave the hotel and head outside. With me in the lead this time, we start the long walk back to my house...

"I'm sorry again for keeping you out for so long," Charlotte says. "Your parents won't be worried, will they?"
"It's fine," I shake my head. "I live alone with my sister, and she's not exactly the worrying type."
"O... oh, I didn't mean to bring up-"

Charlotte looks really guilty... oh man, she definitely got the wrong idea about what I said.

"Oh thank goodness," Charlotte breathes a sigh of relief. "For a second there, I thought..."
"Yeah, I get that the first thing that comes to mind when I say something like that is the worst-case scenario," I shrug.

We spend the next ten minutes or so without saying much of anything... I guess Charlotte's really embarrassed.

"S... soo," she says, her voice wavering as she tries to break the silence, "it sure is a beautiful night, isn't it?"
"Huh, I guess it is," I reply as I actually take the time to appreciate the view. "Normally I can't see worth crap at night when there's a new moon."
"Oh?" Charlotte turns to me. "I've never had a pr-" she snaps her fingers. "You have night vision!"
"Eh?" I stare at her. "I do?"
"Well you can see just fine, right?"

Come to think of it, I never really noticed how dark it is.

"Ehehe, I guess that's one thing that we have in common," Charlotte says with a wide smile on her face. "How funny would it be if we turned out to have the same Branch?"

Being able to talk to animals like she can? That might be useful.

"I dunno how likely that is, though," I say, turning to Charlotte... who's stopped dead in her tracks and is darting her gaze all over the place.
"I- is something wrong?" I ask as a chill runs down my spine.
"I thought I felt something... but I guess it was just my nerves," Charlotte replies with a deadly serious look on her face. None of the animals in this area see anything out of the ordinary either."
"Oh," I nod. "That's a relief..."

For the rest of the way, Charlotte's in in total alert-mode, completely tense like the way a cat gets when you spook it. Not that I'm complaining though, that just means that there's less chance of some creeper getting the drop on is.

Luckily, no such creepers show up and we make it to my place safely.

"So this is where you live?" Charlotte asks as we walk up the driveway.
"Yeah," I reply. "It's not much, but it's home."
"I don't know, you have a really nice place here," she says, looking over my house. "Nice and big, and it looks like you take care of it too."
"I guess so," I shrug.

Once I bring out my keys, Charlotte falls back towards the sidewalk.

"You've made it home safely so I guess my job is done," Charlotte says. "I'll see you around sometime."
"You can come inside if you want," I reply. "At the very least, I can get you something to drink for the walk back to your hotel."
"No, that's fine," she shakes her head. "Thanks, though!"

With that, Charlotte waves goodbye and I head inside.

Pushing that little realization waaaaaay in the back of my mind, I head to my room and toss my backpack on a chair, then throw on the oversized shirt that serves as my pajamas. Next up is my usual pre-bed ritual- making that I don't end up leaving anything in my pants pockets. And while doing so, I fish out a piece of paper out...

It's Irene's phone number. And I also got another girl's number todaaaaay NO STOP THINKING LIKE THAT ALLISON HAS POISONED MY MIND.

Unlike that moron, I have important things to think about. Like this whole branch thing. That's important. Yeah.

After entering Irene's phone number into my phone, I set its alarm to get me up at a reasonable hour tomorrow. After all, the last thing I want is to end up sleeping another day away.

With everything done, I turn off the lights and flop into my bed...

Huh. With my eyes like this, the tiny bit of light that's coming in through my blinds is enough for me to clearly make out everything in my room. That's going to take some getting used to.

But now is not the time to play with my wonderfully useless magic powers, for I am freaking exhausted. Hopefully tomorrow won't be as weird.

>>32752225
I have a hypothesis.

Instead of thinking algebra, we need to think quantum particles, which have partial charges.

For example, let's take girl-particle, which have a +1/3 charge, mundane-particle, which also has a +1/3 charge, and NPC-particle, which is a third particle with +1/3 charge. These particles make up a character that has a net +1 charge.

Now, let's combine other particles. We'll start with girl-particle with +1/3 charge, add a magical-particle which has a -2/3 charge, and MC-particle which also has a -2/3 charge. This results in a character that has a net -1 charge.

When these two types are brought to close proximity, because of their opposite charge they are attracted to each other.

QED!! SCIENCE!!
>>
>>32752628
I don't know what this says but I'm pretty sure it's advocating going for best girl. I'll leave who that is to readers' imaginations.
>>
>>32752640
No, I postulated a theory why magical girls MCs attract nonmagic girl NPCs. Best girl is a quality that does not arise from these elementary physics, just like gravity is absent in quantum physics.
