You go into a low crouch and let your instincts take over. You glide soundlessly over the grass, couching each footfall in a gentle flare of shadow. You might as well have been walking in cotton balls for all the sound you make. You feel in control. In your element. (-1 PP: 5/25) (-2 Stress: 64/100) (+1 Sanity: 97/100)

“All men die alone. It is nothing to be ashamed of,” Cordeliate tells Borya, just as you run up out of the side of her peripheral vision. You’re faster than she has time to deal with. Her eyes flick to you, but you’ve already darted by her. You rack your claws along her injured back as you go, cutting deep. (Cordeliate: 8/23; +3 PP: 8/25)

The demon lets out a low hiss and rounds on you, blade at the ready. “A demon,” she says quietly. “Fighting with demonbane at her back. I don’t know whether I should applaud you for your cunning, or spit on you for treachery.”

You stalk about the Belphegoran, your eyes never leaving hers. Borislav, meanwhile, collapses and his shield disappears, leaving you and Cordeliate in nigh total darkness, with only the faint glow of the burning mansion to give you light. The roaring fire fills the night, and the mingled scent of smoke is thick in the air. Now is not the time to strike. Wait for it.

“You fight well for one so young,” says Cordeliate, almost to herself. Her stance is like that of a viper, ready to strike. “You have potential. A shame, really.”

Now.
>>
>>32684440
Cordeliate whips forward with her blade. You fall backward, just out of its reach, and hit the ground. When the demon brings the rapier back around for a downward strike, you reach upward with your mind and pinch the blade from her grip with a flare of shadow. As you would expect from an expert swordsman, Cordeliate doesn’t lose grip of the blade.

Unfortunately for her, you were counting on it. Her sword hangs uselessly in the air, embedded in the grasp of obstinate shadow, leaving her wide open for your counter attack. You lunge upward and stab all of your claws deep into her chest.

Cordeliate’s grasp on the sword slackens and fails. She staggers backward, blinking in vague surprise at the dark blood pouring from her newfound wounds. You toss the sword off to the side with a flicker of thought. Cordeliate watches it clatter to the ground in shock. “How do you have a Verwelken?” she asks, confused. She coughs, and blood pours from her mouth.

“I am a Verwelken,” you answer.

The demon sits down heavily. “How about that,” she says, keeling over and falling onto the ground. Her eyes don’t focus on you. “Take care of my sword, I suppose. She’s named Zelathis.”
>>
>>32684443

“Oh, uh. Okay,” you say. You’re not sure Cordeliate heard you, because her eyes are glassed over with death.

The night seems surprisingly quiet now. Except for the gunfire. You hear lots of gunfire from the other side of the house. It seems far away, though – maybe it’s the silencer Harvey has on his gun thing.

Cordeliate’s blood seems alluring in the darkness, but you don’t know how cool that would be right now. She seems too person-like for you to feel too comfortable with the whole vampire kind of blood thing you do.

You step over Cordeliate’s corpse and pick up her sword from where it fell. Well, you did tell the lady you’d take care of her sword so… yeah, you guess.

The blade is surprisingly light, and the grip feels rigid and firm under your claws, as if it were designed to be wielded by someone with knife-like fingers. Not to mention, it practically thrums in your hand, as if somebody struck a chord on its resonant frequency.

Carrying the blade in your off hand, you make your way over to Borislav, who seems passed out. He makes an incomprehensible grunt of acknowledgement when you try to shake him awake, but doesn’t make too many moves. The poor guy’s had a long day – he’s probably not too used to being thrown around as a bear. It was likely a traumatic experience.
>>
>>32684841

You hear an approach of rapid footfalls in the dark, and smell cinders and smoke and… blood. The footfalls are backed up by labored breathing of something big. You recognize the blood scent – it’s Ranthix. He must be in retreat, because you’re pretty sure you would have heard more noise if he’d managed to kill them. He doesn’t strike you as the quiet type.

He may run across Borislav if he keeps on his current course. Maybe he was just trying to chase off the Hallows so Cordeliate could make a clean getaway? If there weren’t so many tall bushes and shrubs around this house, you’d be able to tell for certain.

We need more strength, and even though she looks human, more human than us a lot of the time, she was just as much of a monster as the other demons we've hunted.

We have radios or something, right? Could we inform the others, or at least Cas or Harvey or someone, of Borya's position?

>Forget what's cool, you need all the help you can get if you need to fight this guy again. Drink Cordeliate's blood.
I almost felt bad for her for half a second because she had a pretty cool death scene that sounded halfway sorta honorable with the sword thing, but then I remembered she's a fucking demon slaver that kidnaps people and literally drags them to hell. I hope Sierra comes to the same conclusion about not feeling too bad about it, because this chick was a bitch.

As for what to do next, Inferni have enhanced smell. Ranthix will be able to smell us, so we shouldn't sit here trying to hide Borya in shadows, but we still need to make sure he doesn't stomp on the sleepy Russian.

I feel the same way. Drinking her blood's uncool? Cordeliate was majorly uncool in everything but her choice in sword and maybe clothing if you're into that sort of thing. She doesn't deserve the coolness of getting drank.

>>Sierra looks demony enough that Cordeliate thought she was a straight up demon, not just a hellborn.
We need to ask Isaac about that later. See if demons sometimes call hellborn as "demons" or if she was mistaken because we really do just look that helly now or if there's some weird thing going on. Like, I'd be really surprised if demons didn't have some distinctive smell or energy vibe thing going on and if Sierra is putting that out in overdrive or something then it might be good to know.

> Be ready to hide Borislav in shadows
Fuck losing Borya to that cunt.
>>
You don’t like the thought of it, but you need your strength. And, one demon to another, you’re pretty sure it’s what Cordeliate would have wanted. Come on, she said take care of the sword. That means she has to be rooting for you from demon heaven right now. You give in to your baser instinct to savor the kill, trying not to think about the fact that you were just having conversation with this person a couple seconds ago. (+5 HP: 12/14) (-2 Sanity: 95/100)

Lucky for you Cordeliate was even worse scum than Vincent and Jack, who are now handcuffed in the basement of a burning building. Some people deserve the horrible things that happen to you. It doesn’t trouble your nerves too much that you’re benefitting from her death. Everybody in society benefits from her death, really.

As a side note, Belphegoran blood has a kind of festive aftertaste, kind of like mint or some kind of expensive tea. It makes you wonder what other flavors are out there. (-1 Sanity: 94/100) And, with the stimulating taste effect of somebody else’s blood in your mouth, you feel ready to answer the age old question of what Infernus blood tastes like. You hone in on Ranthix’s not-quiet running, set an intercept course. He should be coming by not far from where Borislav is now. You run out to greet the big guy.

“I’m going after Ranthix,” you say into your radio, quietly. “South side of the compound.”
>>
>>32685344

Yep. You remembered something of the map Isaac made you stare at for fifteen minutes. Not wanting to risk the demon catching a reply, you switch the radio off. Also, having learned your lesson about leaving your weapons unloaded, you shove another magazine into your SMG so it’s good to go.

You crouch behind a large, potted plant, and peer around it at Ranthix’s approach. There are several gashes on his extremities, and a few of his leathery bone plates are cracked and bleeding. One of his eyes has a long, bleeding cut across it, and he keeps it mostly squinting. His neck, where you bit him, is swollen like a snakebite, and seems to be paining him greatly.
>>
>>32685365
The internal fire that was burning in him earlier has died down now to a ghost of an ember. His flak jacket is burnt and barely manages to stay affixed to his chest. It’s probably snagged on some of his spines. (Ranthix: 13/51)

Now, he’s not super-fast or anything, but he is managing a high running speed despite having a gimped leg. His speed isn’t giving him the most time to look out for anything important, and you’ll certainly have the jump on him if you decide to strike.

"Cordeliate!" he says gruffly, cupping the side of his face as if that might decrease the volume of his speech. "Cordeliate, time to go!" It likely exhausts his personal restraint to refrain from shouting.

>Hit him with Zelathis, Lightning Sword.

Not particularly. The way a lot of Demons have said "Demonbane kill Demons" leads me to suspect that Angels and those with Angel blood have a supernatural hate on for Demons, but they seem to be pretty on the level with us.

Granted, they are still benefiting from this arrangement, they don't have to try and hunt down a Infernus/Belphegoran/Verwelken hybrid, and instead they get an ace in the hole for their fight to keep the spooky side of the street vaguely civil.

Yeah, it's not a good practice.
>>
You will the darkness into a barrier at about Ranthix’s knee level, right about at the spot where his bad leg will have to go if he keeps going straight.

He doesn’t disappoint. “So be it, suffer the indignity of --”

He collides with the barrier, flinches comically at the surprise of his foot not being where he planned it on being, and falls flat on his face. He hits the ground with some force, and his momentum causes him to slide a few feet on the grass, at which point you leap at him, Zelathis, Lightning Sword swinging.

You underestimate Ranthix’s speed.

He’s already rolled onto his back when you’re in the air coming down at him, and a shoots out a claw to seizes you by your sword wrist, and twists. There’s a definite, unhealthy popping sound, and Zelathis, Lightning Sword falls out of your limp grasp and falls to the ground. (-2 HP: 10/14)

You claw at his grip with your other hand, knowing this is your only chance. Unfortunately, your claws scrape off of Ranthix’s claws as well as if you were using a butter knife. (Ranthix: 12/51)

Man, this went a lot better in your head. You don’t need to be good with swords if you’ve got a magic sword, right?

Ranthix gives you an even look, and then looks back at where he tripped. Of course, there’s nothing there. He notes Cordeliate’s discarded sword, and then looks back at you, an odd, calculating gleam in his eye.
>>
>>32685833

At that point, he could have crushed your skull in his off hand, torn you in half, or perhaps incinerated you in your grip. What you don’t expect him to do is stuff you under an arm like you were a gym duffle bag and starts running again. He smells like volcanic ash and dry sand.

This is not how you imagined this going at all. Your arms are sandwiched by your sides, and his powerful grip is like a crushing, bouncing vice. “How many summers have you seen, spawnling?” he asks in his low, growling voice.

>Bite him.

This situation is almost surreal, but it fills you with very real worry. (+6 Stress: 70/100)

You can’t stop the wide, toothsome smile that spreads over your face. “Like ‘em young, do ya?” His thick hide is slow to relinquish his power to you, but it begins draining over anyway. (+4 PP: 12/25)

“HAHAH YES,” Ranthix shouts, before he seems to remember where he is. “Though I prefer my battles on the field rather than in bed, spawnling, now your age, what is it?”

“Put be down and I’ll tell you,” you say. “And if you don’t, I’ll bite you again I swear.”

“FINE,” Ranthix says. He skids to a stop and throws you unceremoniously to the ground. “YOU’RE HORRIBLE TO HOLD, I FEEL MORE DEAD THAN I DID BEFORE.”

You get up and look around. You’re some distance from the compound, in a big field. It’s dark out here. You didn’t actually expect the demon to drop you. Your right arm hurts like hell, and is still all dislocated and useless for the time being. “So uh. Yeah. I’m like. Seventeen, I guess?” you say. You may as well hold up your end of the bargain. Demons are all up in making deals and bargains, or so you hear.
>>
>>32686220

“AH HA, THEN SO BE IT!” says Ranthix. He grabs you shoulder roughly with one claw, and your limp arm with the other, and gives it a sharp shove back into the socket. A flash of pain sears your brain for a second, and then goes away to leave you with immense dull pain all throughout your arm. (+5 Stress: 75/100)

The demon kneels before you, grabs you by the claws and brings them to his throat. “YOU HAVE BESTED ME. HOW DID THIS HAPPEN? NO! NOT BY A SPAWNLING! ANYTHING BUT THIS HUMILIATION!”

He lets go of your claws and stays there for a second, staring upward at the sky in some kind of rapturous bliss while your claws hover at his unprotected throat.

I feel like he's going to go oinkbane on us and shout "TOO SUBTLE!!!"
>>
>>32686389
If he wanted us dead our head would currently be about the consistency of chunky salsa.

Either he's fucking with us, which I don't think is likely considering how we're still a danger and he's not all that healthy, or he honestly is willing to let us kill him, which is pretty freaky.

The big possibilities I can see are some sort of weird demon oath, or stain on his honor that has to do with our age, or some sort of power of his that does something to the person who kills him.

There’s only one thing to say in a situation like this.

“What?” you ask, blinking.

“THE SENTENCE OF THE DEFEATED IS DEATH,” Ranthix says.

You look around you. There is literally no one else that is seeing this right now. “Uh….”

“I AM THE DEFEATED, CLAIM YOUR RIGHT SPAWNLING.”

“But like. You’re not the defeated,” you say.

“THOUSAND HELLS, SURE I AM SHUT UP AND SPILL MY BLOOD WITH THE SHADOW OF YOUR WRATH.”

“Are you trying to reverse psychology me into letting you go or… I’m not getting your angle.”

“WHAT ARE YOU EVEN – THE ANGLE IS TO PAY GLORY TO THE EVERLASTING VICTOR!” he grabs you by the claws again and jerks the points of them slightly into the flesh of his neck, lets go, and resumes death readiness. “A FIERCE BATTLE WAS WAGED; IN THE END I WAS FOUND LACKING. LIFE IS SUFFERING WITH MY NAME MIRED IN SUCH DEFEAT. MY ONLY HOPE IS THAT NO EAR SHALL HEAR OF THE DISAPOPINTMENT THAT WAS RANTHIX. THAT WOULD MAKE IT WORSE. I BEG OF YOU, NEVER TELL ANYONE HOW PATHETICALLY RANTHIX DIED, OR HOW GREAT IT WAS WHEN RANTHIX SPLIT YOUR BACK WITH HIS TAIL OR THREW YOUR URSINE COHORT OUT OF THE WINDOW.”

>I feel like you may have an ulterior motive for making me kill you.
>If you want to die, can’t you just kill yourself?

Ranthix thinks about this for a moment. “SO. ARE YOU INSINUIATING YOU AREN’T GOING TO SPITE ME IN DEATH?” he asks.

“I guess not that much, really,” you say.

“IN THAT CASE,” Ranthix continues, “TELL EVERYONE EVERYWHERE HOW STRONG AND FIERCE I WAS, AND HOW I CARRIED YOU LIKE A PITRAT AWAY FROM YOUR ALLIES WITHOUT YOU BEING ABLE TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT, AND HOW I COULD HAVE SLAIN YOU AT ANY INSTANT IF IT WASN’T FOR THE POWER OF YOUR INESCAPABLE DESTINY. >>
If there was ever anything deserving the title THE TERRIBLE affixed to the end of their name, Ranthix would be the one deserving. “Yeah I guess I could work that out,” you say. “But I mean. This can’t be about Meckor being a bad boss. This is like. More ridiculous than that warrants.”

Ranthix stands, towering above you. “HOW DARE YOU QUESTION MY JUDGEMENT! THIS IS EXACTLY AS REDICUOUS AS IT WARRANTS. WHAT ARE YOU INSINUATING NOW?”

“No,” you say, putting your foot down, “I’m the one that asks questions here. Like, you’re the…” you count on your fingers. Nabuth. Dogwalker. Waldric. Cordeliate. Like, five goatmen? Should you count Trevon? Probably not, he was hellborn. You guess you should count your mom, since you know you saw her at some point. “Literally, you’re the tenth demon I’ve seen.”

And that's counting goatmen, but you're not sure if they're hellborn or demons or what.

“SO WHAT YOU’RE TELLING ME,” says Ranthix, looming over you, “IS THAT YOU DON’T KNOW ANYTHING.”

You decide not to say anything, because you don’t know what you’re supposed to say. However, your silence is an answer in and of itself.

Ranthix watches you carefully, and with a surprising amount of thought. “SO THAT’S HOW IT’S GOING TO BE,” he concludes. “FAREWELL SPAWNLING, I KNOW WHERE YOU SLEEP.”

The Infernus turns and bounds off into the darkness with surprising speed. You don’t think you can catch up to him if you tried to pursue.

“Dammit,” you say, bringing your SMG up. You should have killed him – if he’s anything like you, he’ll be right as rain in a couple days and be ready to take everybody on again. It was just about all everybody could do to drag the bruiser down to (almost) killable levels.

You get Ranthix’s bounding form in the sights and open fire. And you keep shooting. And keep shooting. And then you run empty, and fucking Ranthix is still fucking running away. What the heck’s he made out of? (Ranthix: 5/51)

He leaps over a fence and runs off out of sight through a line of bushes. You have no idea what the hell any of that was about.

Regretfully, you turn and head back toward the flaming compound. You hear sirens in the distance, but you should have at least enough time to get your sweet magic sword back before you and the Hallows have to book it.

You flip your radio on and tell everyone you’re on your way back. You’re not quite sure yet how you’re going to explain what just happened.

>>
>>32688772
Been here since thread 1, and yeah every time I'm gone it seems something dumb happens. Fun quest though, and we should probably bring up this destiny crap with the Hallows. While it could have just been part of the posturing that seems so important in demon society, the fact that he was capitulating even at a point where he could have ploughed through and escaped suggests that there is more to it than that (unless he's just that much of an idiot, which is possible too). Cordeliate was also oddly sanguine about handing over her sword after the realization that we were verwelken as well as infernus/belphegorean, though her odd behaviour could be down to systemic shock from her injuries.

Honestly at this point I am thinking it is a good idea to go lone wolf as much as we can (meaning assaulting a compound would not be a lone wolf thing).

Also should probably move some SMG to assault rifle since out demon stuff tends to have the not-long-range things covered.
>>
>>32689750
We just need to take the time and ask somebody what the hell is going on. You know, like the demon hunters we're staying with.

Just so we don't stop in the middle of a fight again and start looking for the plot. That shit's annoying.
>>
>>32691503
Oh we need to deal with lose ends and all that first.
>>
Wow, the people that decided to let Ranthrax go are retarded.
>>
>>32694252
Yeah i thought so to, but there seems to be something really weird going on with all that. It is perfectly reasonable thing for her to do as well, it was a really weird turn of events and she was put off.

And we might have gained a sort of ally inside meckor's forces. If we were to meet him again, he would probably refuse to fight us or something and that could be a nice tipping point in the next fight.

What they SHOULD have done was to have him swear fealty to us or something. We are (most likely) of royal blood so it could have worked.

And lastly, it was a very human thing to do. He didn't kill us when he had the chance and we didn't kill him when we had the chance.
>>
>>32694252
You lack honor.
>>
>>32694480
>We are (most likely) of royal blood
We have LITERALLY no reason to think that. We're, at best, the fifth-generation bastard of a high-born Infernus. We're a mixed-breed mutt, with human mixed in on top of that. The SINGLE hint in that direction was Reeber being called 'royal,' and in context, 'Royal' could have just been his breed of hellhound, like 'Bulldog,' or been the name that the dogwalker had been using.

Basically, thinking that Sierra is royalty is hopeful people grasping at straws with very close to zero evidence because they want her to be even more special than just a theoretically-impossible mixed-breed.

Am i the only one who's kind of happy he's still out there, this just means that when he comes back to kill us we'll be stronger and it'll be a great way to gauge our strength when we kill him solo.

I was hoping for a more climactic end to that whole thing. It was the biggest boss fight we had so far.

>What they SHOULD have done was to have him swear fealty to us or something. We are (most likely) of royal blood so it could have worked.
This is jumping to conclusions, which in this case will get us fucking killed. Sure, we could have leaned on him to swear fealty to us, but after how quickly he defected from Meckor? There's obviously some code that he's following but doing his damned hardest to squirm around when presented with the opportunity.

>And lastly, it was a very human thing to do. He didn't kill us when he had the chance and we didn't kill him when we had the chance.
Too true, which is why I'm not too angry at how we handled this. I don't see why we spared him -then- shot him though. We can play it off later as though we were putting on a good show for the Hallows if it comes to that.

I agree with the lone wolf thing, our shadow powers don't go very well working with a crew that seem to literally spew light.

I'm not saying we should flip the bird to the Hallows, but maybe we should think about making our own way. Perhaps harnessing the Landwell for a month or so and seeing what we can get out of it.
Or building a fully-sick treehouse that works too.

I'd like to see how long that'd last.

We have a park ranger on our side.
