Leaving your sparring partner behind you head for town. It’s been eating away at you in the back of your mind ever since you woke up in this strange village so you might as well try and find Lady Kaede to tell her a little more about your encounter with the man in red. After all it would certainly make for good post spar conversation. Hell, you find you’re even beginning to take a shine to this whole LARP thing so you might as well keep playing along.

You wipe the sweat from your brow and continue walking through the small town, the midday sun beating down on you. In the distance you notice Kaede and Mushin sprinting down the dirt road from where the street winds into the forrest.

They stop in front of you, dust swirling at their feet as Mushin gasps for air before taking another swig from his gourd.

Kaede grabs you by your shoulders and shakes you, her eyes wide. “The demon... the demon is gone!” she croaks, her voice cracking slightly.

You feel your heart skip a beat. “The man in red... he’s... gone?”

You let the realization slowly sink in. He escaped. He escaped to come after you. He’s coming for YOU.

Mushin corks his gourde and scratches him head “How’er you going ta defend yourself kaguuum-” “With this.” you respond with a smile, tapping the base of your new weapon on the dirt road.

You heft the weapon over your shoulder and begin to run toward the forrest turning to wave to the two holy folks. “Beware the demon Inuyasha!” she shouts as you vanish into the distance.

You feel a maddening grin cross your face as you enter the forrest, pinpricks of light piercing through the foliage. This time you’re ready for him.

You near the tree and check around it. He’s not here. Squinting you turn your gaze toward the canopy, he’s not in the tree either and the salt ring’s not broken. Shit, he really IS gone.

You rub your chin as you ponder where he could have gone. The village would most certainly have been suicide for someone like him so he would need to keep to the forrest. Although his red kimono or whatever that ridiculous costume was would be easy to spot.

You snap your fingers as you stop at what seems like the most logical conclusion. The well. If those ears where real and he was a real demon he might have super smell or something so he’d undoubtedly track you. Maybe even get himself trapped in the well!

After some brisk walking you find yourself back in the clearing. The wood and stone well nestled deep in its heart. This was where this whole thing started... well the second half at least. You begin to step forward, but stop yourself, the sunlight catching something... you squint and focus your eyes. The entire area seems to be criss crossed with that stuff that was all over your back yard when you first escaped. If you didn’t know any better you’d say it was hair.

Your thoughts are interrupted by a sudden pain from your cheek, raising your hand to it, you feel a sticky hotness between your fingers. Blood.

You look around, but nothing seems to be in the field. Did you cut yourself on the threads, or was this some sort of attack?

No, we do not do this. No QM does.

When you roll 2d20 + 2, you have rolled 1d20,1d20+2. That is how the mechanics of the dice work. When you want to roll 2d20 plus a modifier for each one you say "Add 2 to each roll". Bam. Done. Technically the 13 shouldn't have even been counted because he did not roll a 13. He rolled an 11 and a 12.

This is how all the other QMs do it. Because otherwise it seems like numbers are being modified out of thin air.

You submissively raise your hands as you scan the horizon for attackers, your naginata resting against your shoulder. Nothing seems to be in the area though. “Look I don’t know what or who is out there, but I have no business with you. I’m going now.”

You slowly back up out of the clearing, keeping an eye out for any other threads. Once clear you back to head to the village, making sure to stay alert, however you make it back without incident.

The sun looks like it’s starting to set and the village seems rather calm. The guards seem to be out a little earlier than they where yesterday however. Kaede must have alerted them of something, but not enough to get the whole village in a panic.

In the distance you see the shopkeeper waving at you enthusiastically.

You walk up to the shopkeepers stand, hoping he’ll have information for you about the man in red Kaede dubbed “Inuyasha”. You’re awoken from your daydream by a heavy thud.

“Lets go get you suited us Lady Kagome.” the shopkeeper says with a grin as he caresses the leather yoroi armor on the counter.

Given the circumstances; armoring up sounds like a fantastic idea and you promptly follow the man to the dimly lit back of the shop where he quickly strips you of your lent Shrine Maidens outfit and begins tying you into the bandit armor.

The man stands back and sticks his thumb and tongue out as he looks you over. “Ya, that’s a pretty good looking Yoroi considering what I had to work with...”

While it feels a little constraining, you certainly feel a lot safer in it. Even if the right shoulder guard and accompanying arm armor are still missing. You grip the breast plate and tug on it a little, trying to loosen it so you can breath easier.

The shop keeper raises his hands and waves them a little “Now now now I know what you’re thinking: “What about the right arm?” right? Well I couldn’t find any suitable spares to give you one so what you saw today is what you got. Still a great deal really.” he slaps your hand away. “And stop fidgeting, it’s supposed to be snug.”

He takes a seat in a wooden chair in the corner and leans on his arms in an awkward position, seemingly sizing you up. “Like it?”

“I guess? I’ve never worn anything like it bef-”

“SPLENDID!” the man yells, throwing his arms back and rocking the chair back. “You’ll get used to it.” he finishes, the sound of the chair clacking back down to the ground finalizing his statement.

You awkwardly stare at each other for a little before the shopkeeper breaks the silence. “Tell me Kagome... have you ever heard the greatest love story ever told?”

You feel pin pricks in your face as you redden. Is this guy seriously hitting on you? Isn’t he married? “N-no Mr...”

“Kujo Keisuke.” he says, rummaging through a sack on the floor before pulling out a large stack of ancient papers. “Good, because I was going to tell it to you anyway. Just finished it.” he says with a smile before opening the book.

The crisp pages creak as they turn. A forrest pops up out of it with a woman in a shrine maidens outfit at the center of the yellowed page.

“Our story begins, as most stories of this kind do, with a young maid. This particular maid was named Lady Kikyo. A shrine maiden by right and skill...”

He nods at you and you pull a tab on the book, causing the drawing to move forward. Keisuke smiles and turns the page, revealing a large picture of the woman from before fighting off a horde of snake like monsters.

“As a shrine maiden she swore her life to the protection of her village and to slaughter any demons who would threaten it. Or her secret treasure...” he adds, tugging at her robe to reveal a small pink circle.

He turns the page again to reveal another forrest scene... with the man in red in the distance among the treetops.

“Demons from all over sought out the jewel of four souls, but Lady Kikyo defeated them all... save for one.”

He turns the page again to reveal her and the man in red embraced in each others arms.

“Lady Kikyo found herself falling in love with a demon. The very creatures she had sworn to destroy. The demon even loved her in return... or so they say.”

He flips the page again to reveal a burning shrine, the man in red standing in front of it, clutching a necklace, bodies at his feet. You spin a wheel behind the shrine, causing the flames to “dance”.

“The demon shared no love or pity for the village Kikyo protected, and stole her treasure and laid waste to its men.”

He quickly flips the page revealing a wounded Kikyo firing her bow. He tugs a string, dragging a paper arrow through the demons shoulder.

“Betrayed and injured, Kikyo fired on her former lover with tears in her eyes, but could not bring herself to slay the beast... instead, casting a spell on him to sleep for eternity.”

He turns the page again to reveal a small grave on a grassy hill, a large rising sun in the background.

“Heart and body broken, poor Lady Kikyo succumbed to her injuries and died. Her body and her treasure burned so that no man or demon would ever have to suffer as she did.”

He closes the book with a sigh. “Not too happy of a story is it? But the formula’s a true classic. It’s even based on the legends here. Think it’ll sell?”

He pauses and looks left then right before motioning you to come closer. ”They say Kikyos ashes are buried on a hill just outside of town...”

You sit at his feet gawking for what feels like an eternity. Keisuke becoming viably unnerved when it finally snaps into place. That was a clue. Right? Yes totally absolutely.

You snap yourself to your feet and bow before him. “It was quite a lovely story Keisuke.” You smirk, still bowing “But I don’t think it’s finished quite yet...”

Stopping to ask for directions from a few nervous looking villagers, you eventually find your way to the spot the shopkeeper mentioned in his story and true enough to it, the large red sun is setting in the distance by the time you get there.

You stop a few paces out to catch your breath and drink in the scenery. The large “hill” is more of a cliff that overlooks the sprawling rivers, forests and fields below. At the entrance of the small shrine/ tomb kneels a man in a white shirt. His long black hair tied in a pony tail. Incense seems to be burning in front of him.

You stand there at the edge of the path trying to figure out what to say. Trying to figure out just who this guy is and if your suspicions are right...

A cool breeze ruffles your hair and bends the grasses of the fields in a wave as you snap out of your trance.

“H-hey...”

The man does now answer.

“Inu...yasha?”

The mans shoulders seem to droop. He pauses as the wind picks up again, blowing out the incense.

“What was she like?” you ask, taking a slight step forward.

“... ... the kindest person I have ever known. And... I killed her.” He slams his fist into the ground and grinds it in.

You find your right foot instinctively sliding back, readying yourself for a brawl. “Inuyasha” sits upright and tugs his shirt firmly, smoothing it out.

“And you know... I guess I’d have to do it again. And again... She had the jewel ya know? With it I could finally be a full demon. But it doesn’t really matter any more. They’re both gone.”

He stands upright, still looking at the shrine. “Tell me lady, what’s yer name cuz ya sure as hell an’t her no matter what some clerk tells me.”

“Kagome.”

“Kag... oh... meh... I’ll remember that.” He steps to the side and looks at you, a melancholy smile crossing his face.

“At least ya took off that ridiculous costume... anyway I guess it’s time ta end this farce once and fer all... it’s been a long time commen’...”

“Th’ way I see it, ya’ still got a little time left b’for the sun sets and things get interesten’. so lets stop wasten’ time and cut ta the chase... either ya do me like she did before and finish the job; or I do you.”

You roll your eyes at his theatrics. This guy is WAAAAAY too tryhard. You’re half expecting some guy in kabuki paint to burst through the bushes and do a pratfall or two to lighten the mood.

“Sorry, that’s just not happening.” you say; spinning your naginata around, then planting the blade into the ground as you cross your arms, effectively turning your nose up at his request.

“I’m not her. You have no problem with me. We’re not “finishing” this, and I’m not going to help you commit assisted suicide. It’s against the law. You want it that bad, go jump.”

“Fine, have it yer way!”

He takes a swing at you, but you easily deflect the haymaker and push him to the ground where he lays face down mumbling to himself in the dirt. This guy is as pathetic as they come. It’s a wonder he’s not still in his parents flat surrounded by body pillows and whatever other stuff dorks like.

You let out an exacerbated sigh as you grab the leg of his pants and begin dragging him back into town. He doesn’t seem to be protesting at all.

The sun has nearly set by the time you arrive and the town seems... empty. That’s pretty strange. You roll the man in red over with your foot before giving him a sharp kick.

“Get up you sad sack!” He groans and rises to his feet while rubbing his side.

“The hell’d everybody go?”
“Maybe they all killed themselves from having to listen to your sob story of a character sheet.” you muse.

The man simply scowls and walks forward before stopping and batting at something with his hands. He takes a few steps back and with the remaining slivers of sunlight you notice that his face and hands are covered in a series of small papercut like gashes. Ruby pearls of blood suspended in the air. A leaf flutters from a nearby tree before being quartered...
