Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread you set off to reach a conclave of outcast and took a detour through a gorge to avoid strange, ape-like mutants.

The creature lumbers forward, out of what you assume is its nesting area. Thick strands of saliva drip from its maw, each tooth larger than you are tall. As it approaches you its head weaves back and forth in a slow, rhythmic pattern and its tongue flicks out to taste the air at fairly regular intervals. The smaller specimens have already eaten a fair portion of this crate's contents, but even if it had been full you doubt it would be enough to satisfy this massive creature. This thing could probably swallow one of the crates whole if it wanted to.

On the bright side, it doesn't seem to have noticed you yet. In fact it appears to be blind. Its eyes are disproportionately tiny compared to the size of its head and appear to be covered in some sort of thick, white film. If you wanted to you could probably just make a run for it and escape, but fighting this thing seems out of the question. You would need to spend massive amounts of vys to create anything large enough to do meaningful damage and you doubt fire magic would be terribly judging solely on the thickness of its scales.

Darzi has already backed away from the crate, putting quite a bit of distance between her and it while at the same time placing her nearer the cave opening you entered through. Much to your surprise you notice that she has a sword in her hand, or rather, a sword attached to her hand. The metal of her armor has flowed down her arm and formed itself into a long, thin blade. You reach into your cloak and withdraw your spear as a precaution, but to be frank it would probably be wiser to just ditch this idea.

>You have eleven crates of food left, pull out another one and crack it open. Riding this thing would be great.

Not sure how effective a mount it will be if it is blind, but we have food to spare so might as well try.

You carefully remove your cloak and spread it out on the ground, making sure to place the inside of the cloak against the ground. You wait for a moment and then swiftly whip it off the ground. In its place sits a crate of food, unopened as of yet. You wedge your spearhead into the crack on top of the crate. It takes a little wiggling but eventually the nails keeping the crate closed pop off and you slide the wooden board away.

After that you back away quickly, hoping to avoid getting snatched up along with the crate when this thing comes to get its snack. As the creature looms over the crate of food it briefly swings its head in your direction, seeming to stare at you for but a moment before returning its attention to the food. Its mouth opens wide and its long, serpentine tongue slides out. To your surprise its tongue seems to flatten and scoop up the remnants of the first crate, tossing the contents into its mouth before its jaws snap shut around the second crate.

It swallows the food in its mouth whole and turns its attention to you expectantly. You know, for a blind creature it seems to be oddly precise in figuring out where you are. You note for the first time an array of long strands of flesh dangling from its jawline. They almost look like thick strands of hair, and they seem to rotate and twitch of their own volition. It's gross, frankly.

Though its not moving nor does it seem aggressive, its stare is really starting to unsettle you. You're not sure if its still hungry or if its just studying you or what the hell is going on.

Can we try nature+manipulate to calm it down and get it to like us?
>>
It just occured to me that in this world we have a chance to acquire modern firearms.

It got me thinking, what would everyone use?
A marksman rifle for Chryssa obviously, but what would everyone else use?
>>
>>32660617
>Manipulate: Creates an invisible hand fashioned from vys. Allows you to, as the name suggest, manipulate objects from a distance. It is not necessary to cast the Ranged metamagic to use this spell at range. When combined with the elements, it typically improves one's control of the physical element rather than any of the more esoteric uses, like ESP or healing. Also allows one to counter effects like poison, paralysis, and leech.

>When combined with the elements,
>improves one's control of the physical element
>rather than any of the more esoteric uses, like ESP or healing

Manipulate+Nature would just give us better control over plants, not allow us to control animals.
>>

>Give it another crate of food.

>>
>>32660641

>>

Not with metal magic.
>>
>>32660676
Obviously we would also acquire a shit ton of bullets and stuff them in our cloak like everything else.
>>
>>32660656
>So, for instance, if someone wanted to control an animal they would want to cast Manipulate, with the Vys metamagic effect, and probably the Ranged metamagic effect too. For a total cost of 4 Vys. The control would last as long as they focused, draining 1 vys per round.
>>
>>32660703

You lay your cloak out on the ground once more, briefly smoothing it out before whipping it away. Once more in its place is a wooden crate. This time you don't even have time to pry it open. The gaint lizard darts forward and you're forced to haul ass lest you be snatched up along with the crate when its jaws snap shut around it. You hear the wood crunch and the sound of its teeth scraping the stone from behind you, and by the time you turn around all that's left is a few broken planks of wood.

It gulps the contents down whole. You're only a few feet away from it now and you can feel its breath washing across your face. It smells of rotting meat and a sort of sharp, acerbic scent you can't identify. It seems to stick in your throat and increasingly it becomes difficult to breath. Not to mention your chest is starting to ache. Maybe this is a result of the poison your host warned you about?

You take a few steps back and it takes a step forward, opening its mouth slightly and letting out a long, low hiss. You're increasingly becoming uncomfortable.

>Run away!
>Blast it with fire to distract it, then run away.
>Maybe if you give it more food it will calm down.

You hesitantly set your cloak on the ground. As you do so it leans towards you and presses the tip of its nose against you. You very nearly shit your pants as it takes a deep breath, sniffing you as far as you can tell. Fortunately it doesn't open its mouth and consume you hole, but merely backs away after. Maybe its showing affection? Maybe this is working after all? You whip the cloak away quickly and it opens it jaw wide once more, clamping down on the crate and snatching it up hole. This time it rears its head back and tosses the crate down its gullet.

You've given this thing four crates of food. That's a month's worth of supplies as far as you can tell. At least it finally seems satisfied because as it lowers its head again it nuzzles its nose against you. Of course, the size of the damned thing's head means you get knocked on your ass none the less but it still seems rather happy with you. If breathing the same air as this creature didn't make your chest ache something terrible it would probably be cute in a weird way.

Once its finished grinding you into the stone floor with its nose it lays down on the ground, the cavern shaking as its massive weight impacts the stone. Dirt and detritus rain down from the ceiling as the creature settles in for a nap as far as you can tell.

You rub your chest and clear your throat, trying to work out whatever is clogging your throat. No luck, unfortunately. {I have tamed the mighty beast!} You transmit to each of your companions. Profectus is the first to shoot back a response. {Bull. Shit. It's probably just biding its time and waiting for us to get close so it can snatch us all up.} Chryssa promptly chides him. {Paranoia is unbecoming of a man, try to relax.} A quick glance towards the cave entrance shows them jogging towards you, so you decide to go ahead and start scaling the beast's side. It takes a little contemplation to figure out just how you're going to do that but you realize eventually that you could just wedge your fingers between the scales and climb up as one might a rock wall.

You push your fingers between two of the scales and, once you're sure it doesn't hurt the creature, pull yourself up. You're halfway up the lizard creature, perhaps fifteen or so feet in the air, when a fit of dizziness hits. Your head swims and you waver away from the side of the lizard, starting to lose your group on its side. You take a deep breath to try and stop the world spinning, but it catches in your throat and you find yourself struck by a violent, hacking cough. You pry one of your hands out of the lizard's scales to cover your mouth, and when the coughing finally settles you pull your hand away to see it covered in thick, red blood.

{Oh shit, I'm coughing blood.} You transmit through the brooches to your four companions. You try to keep yourself awake by channeling vys into your limbs to shore up your grip and into your mind to stave off the encroaching blackness. Unfortunately it's simply not enough. As the world fades away you feel yourself slipping off of the beast's hide and falling through the air. The world seems to slow down as your sight narrows, as if you were looking through a long tunnel at the ceiling high above. Your body jolts as you hit something. You're relieved that it doesn't hurt, it doesn't feel like anything is broken. You distantly hear Chryssa's voice shouting something but you can't make out the words. After that your consciousness fades out entirely.

You feel as though half awake, staring into the blackness of the void. You're stuck like that for what feels like ages, unable to move or speak. Even unable to control the canvas before you despite your lucidity. Usually you can shape and alter your dreams, sometimes even change it entirely if you wish to. Not this time. Slowly from the blackness a face makes itself apparent. Its eyes, nostrils, and mouth are delineated from the blackness of the void around it by glowing points of light, smoke curling up into the sky above.

{Do not presume yourself immortal, elf. There is much in this world which does not see the light of day in yours. Careful thought must be exercised lest the threats of this world slip past your detection.}

(1/2)
>>
The creature fades away and you become aware of a gentle rocking motion. It's soothing, but countered by the intense ache of your chest. It's a burning sensation that drives you towards wake fullness despite your best efforts to stay asleep. When your eyes finally snap open you find yourself resting atop the back of the lizard you'd fed as it lumbers across the wasteland. You're no longer in the gorge, and your head is rested on Chyssa's lap. Darzi is sitting near-by. Your mouth taste oddly of soap. You find yourself wondering why on Earth your armor didn't activate and protect you from the apparently acidic breath of the massive creature.

You use a touch of water magic to assess the damage. Your lungs are still damaged and you find yourself struggling to breath, but it's a simple task to repair any damage. With only an insignificant fraction of your vys the ache in your chest dissipates and the wheezing ceases. Oddly enough the poison must have worn off, because you're unable to detect anything still eating away at you nor do you feel at all dizzy.

While still shaking off the last vestiges of unconsciousness you mumble. “Fucker called me an elf...”. Chrys, obviously confused, looks down at you. “What? Who called you an elf?” You wave her off absentmindedly, trying to sit up. She pushes you back down with surprising, and probably unnecessary, force. “You should not be moving yet, not a moment ago you were coughing unconscious and coughing up blood. You need to rest.” You hold up your hands in mock surrender. “Alright, no need to go shoving me around. I already healed my lungs though, and the poison is gone. I'm fine. What happened anyway? How long was I out?”

Chryssa eyes you warily for a moment, doesn't seem she entirely believes you. At least she answers your question. “After you passed out and fell I caught you before you hit the ground.” She pauses expectantly. You stare at her for a moment before realizing what it is she's waiting for. “Oh, uh. Thanks for not letting me hit the rocks and break my spine. Being unable to move my legs would not be enjoyable in the slightest. Probably.” She nods her head curtly and then continues. “Darzi used water magic to stop the bleeding and prevent you from suffocating then our host used some method of mask to force a white mist-” Your host interrupts here. “It was a simple base compound designed to neutralize the acid in your lungs. It's part of your standard medical kit.” She glances at him for a moment before continuing. “-into your lungs. After that we carried you onto the lizard and our host jabbed it in a specific area behind the jaw where the scales are weak using your spear.”

>>
Your host interrupts again. “Yeah, sorry. I sort of borrowed it without permission. Normally you can just use your fingers and press on the things to steer them, but with this big bastard I had to improvise. Anyway, at the rate we're going we'll probably hit the Conclave by tomorrow morning, assuming one of us can stay awake to steer this thing.” You wave your hand in the air. “I don't really need sleep, I can manage it well enough.” He glances over his shoulder and nods, though the gesture is made difficult due to the bulky apparatus attached to his neck, shoulders, and head. “Great, you'll have to steer this fucking thing then once I nod off.”

Excidium doesn't appear to be about any particular element. Its name means "Destruction" and typically refers to a devastating military defeat. Reading the opening pages didn't seem to reveal anything of particular interest, if anything it almost read like a fantasy novel. Perspective was third person and it appeared to be about the everyday life of the protagonist. Interesting, but not very insightful or groundbreaking. It was very, very expensive though and you found it in the section of books reserved for Academy faculty.

You push yourself up, this time Chryssa doesn't force you to lay back down, which is nice. You rub your chest to alleviate some residual soreness and then address Profectus and Chryssa both. “So, how goes meditation? I know you had a breakthrough last night meditating on the egg, Prof, but what about you Chrys? Ever figure out how to successfully channel vys?” Chryssa speaks up first. “While opportunities have been limited amidst recent events, I feel I have grown competent enough to reliably channel vys into physical attributes. I have had some moderate success in channeling vys towards mental task, but I do not feel yet feel confident doing so.”

Profectus is next. “I haven't really flexed my new powers yet, but it seems like I'm more in control of my arm. It doesn't hurt nearly as much, and overall I just feel... I don't know, happier. More energetic. I would wager that I can also produce more powerful blast if I need to.” Fulvia remarks. “You also wagered you could beat me in a game of cards. We both know how that ended.” He waves her off. “Oh come on, you were cheating. You had to have stuffed some cards up your sleeves or some such. Anyway, I'm doing well is what I'm getting at.”

You reach into your cloak and withdraw a stack of books, handing one out to both Profectus and Chryssa and the two small parcels at the top, one only a few pages bound together and the other an unintelligible letter, to Fulvia. You keep the Five Effects for yourself, flipping it open to the index page and finding the page numbers of the effects you'd like to learn before addressing your companions. “Fulvia, I want you to take a crack at decoding the research data and the letter. Profectus, read that book. It will help you with fire magic. Chryssa, that book ought to help you with Earth magic. I can also provide you a few simple tips if you'd like.”

You start with Speed, since it's the earlier of the two chapters you intend to read today. The first few chapters seems to relate to what the Speed effect can do. The author starts off by saying Speed, like Slow, is something of an oddity in the magic world. It shares many similarities with metamagic effects in that it can alter the way the effect is cast or dramatically alter either an element or an effect when used in conjunction. However, unlike metamagic it can also be cast by itself. Thus it is generally considered an effect.

When used in conjunction with spells like Poison, Paralysis, and Leeching it generally makes the spell more effective. Poison will destroy more vys faster. Paralysis will lock the joints of its target faster, though the author notes that the effects will also wear off sooner. Leech will drain more vys per round, instead of only being half as effective like it normally would when used in conjunction with metamagic. Thus a quickened leech spell can be used with one other metamagic effect and still drain just as much vys as normal.

Speed's effects will change depending on which element used, but it will always have an effect. With water magic, one will be able to heal wounds much more quickly. With nature magic, one can grow plants much faster than they normally would. Magical fire will spread much faster and will be much harder to extinguish after being hastened, sometimes even continuing to burn after being doused in fire. One will be able to erode armor, weapons, and stone much, much more quickly when the spell has been hastened. Finally, though its effects on metal magic are unknown to the author he's positive that it must serve some sort of purpose.

Finally when just casting a 'Speed' spell, without using any other effects either metamagic or otherwise, it will make the target much quicker than they normally would be. The author states that it's not the same as simply enhancing one's muscles with channeled vys to move faster. For a fraction of the cost of channeling vys, one's perception as well as one's body are quickened significantly. The author also remarks that maintaining the spell for too long can lead to negative health effects, specifically nausea, vomiting, internal bleeding, severed tendons, and torn muscles.

The last chapter has combined how to meditate on speed with the theoretical uses of the spell. To meditate upon the speed effect one must focus intensely on time passing. The trick to casting the speed effect is not so much training oneself to use vys a certain way, in fact it should feel very similar to channeling vys, rather it's figuring out where to cast the spell. One must focus intensely on the passage of time, counting each second as it goes past. The meditating vatis should channel vys into their mind in such a way that they notice shorter and shorter segments of time passing. Once they become proficient in this basic use of the spell, the rest will come naturally. After that the author posits that, in conjunction with the Time metamagic effect one would be able to make time itself flow faster in an isolated area, probably for a set duration. They would also be able to counter the effects of a Slow Time spell.

You pause from your reading to take a look at your surroundings and assess the progress of your companions. Profectus, much to your surprise, seems completely engrossed in his book. He's flipping from page to page quickly and occasionally going back to reread whatever it is that book details. He seems completely oblivious to the world around him. Chryssa, on the other hand, is meditating. She has a small stone in front of her, and you note that large chunks of it are missing. Hopefully she'll actually be able to get some use out of that mace soon.

Before you dive back into your reading you reach into your cloak and extract the suit of centurion armor. It clamors out onto the back of the lizard and you have to catch it to prevent it sliding off. Really, trying to do this with one hand while keeping your book in the other wasn't your best idea. You dog ear the Five Effects and set it aside before standing up and approaching Profectus with armor in hand. You have to give a nudge with your foot to get his attention but once you do he hops up immediately. “Gods, I wasn't sure you were really going to follow through!” He certainly seems excited. You offer him the armor and he takes it proudly. “You'll need to activate the self-repairing function to fix the hole in the back of the helmet, but it's yours now. I hope you don't get haunted by the vengeful spirit of an ancient centurion.”

He raises his forearm and presses a button on his control panel. His armor seems to separate into its component parts. The cuirass breaks apart into two pieces, the arm guards simply slide off, the boots separate into three pieces. He removes it quickly and it seals itself back together just as quickly as it broke apart. You can't help but find that a little odd. While he goes about putting on his new armor you decide to check in on Fulvia, who's sitting near your host just behind the lizard's head.
(3/5 or 6)
>>
Fulvia is still hard at work decoding those missives you gave her. She's set the letter aside, but the research data seems to be puzzling her. “What's wrong? Can you figure it out?” She glances up at you for a moment and then returns to the page. “Maybe. I understand the cipher, its using a form of the alphabet except shifted several letters to the left. However it is using a series of these shifted alphabets and each one of them is different. I believe it must correspond to some kind of keyword, however without knowing that keyword it would be nearly impossible to solve.” You shrug your shoulders. “Well, keep at it. There are only five hundred twenty nine possible combinations multiplied by however many characters are on the page.” Fulvia shakes her head. “The document is several pages long, there are hundreds of words and thousands of characters.” You decide to just leave her to it, you probably couldn't provide much aid all things considered. With that in mind you return to your reading.

The Confuse effect seems quite a bit simpler than the Speed effect. According to the author, it is essentially channeling a large and violent burst of vys into a target's mind. This can cause the weak-willed and untrained to fall unconscious immediately. At the least the target can expect a viscous migraine, temporary loss of vision, dizziness, nausea, and weakness in the limbs. The author describes its effects as similar to being punched very hard in the back of the head, or the experience of a very bad hangover.

(4/5 or 6)
>>
There is little nuance or mystery to the Confuse effect. It seems improbable that it would have any sort of effect on any of the elements or in conjunction with any other effects. The only metamagics that it would work with are those that directly affect the effects of the spell. Things like area of effect, ranged, beam, and selective have the obvious affects upon the Confuse effect. Overall it seems fairly dull, but fairly simple and useful at the same time.

To meditate upon the Confuse effect one needs a target. The author recommends animals but people or even oneself will due just fine. Then again, the wisdom of casting a spell which can cause unconsciousness and migraines on oneself is questionable. The meditating vatis should attempt to mentally 'punch' the mind of the target with a burst of vys. It should be as violent and explosive as possible. Really, mastering the spell is seems to be as simple as getting the hang of releasing vys so rapidly.

Your reading finished you slam the book shut, laying back and sighing in relief. Your eyes hurt, and at some point it must have grown dark. You cast a simple water spell to alleviate the weariness you're feeling and then call out to your host. “How are you holding up, ready to get some rest?” He responds after a short while. “I'm starting to doze but I could keep going for a while longer. Hey, think you could whip up a meal of some sort for everybody? Once you've eaten we can switch off, I won't have to go to bed on an empty stomach.”

You've got plenty of jerky, hard tack, dried fruits, salted cuts of meat and fish. You could probably just eat all that without cooking, but it would taste significantly better if you took the time to whip up a stew or dish of some sort. Then again, you can't exactly light a fire on the back of a lizard. Though its scales may be fire retardant you doubt it would be okay with a campfire on its back. You'd need to use magic to cook the food and that means spending vys.

>Acquisition Chryssa's pot and whip up some stew.
>Use that 'pressure cooker' Profectus found and steam something up.
>If hard tack, dried meat, and fruit is good enough for a giant lizard, it's good enough for you.

Ask how to use it first though. Oh and can we finally ask for our hosts name?

Alright, my sister is getting her wisdom teeth cut out so I've got to be there for moral support, back in a few hours. I'll start next thread with the results of this vote.

Man, we should go full antimage. Let Prof and Chryssa deal the damage (they seem to be learning fast) and we keep the party healed and annihilate any enemy magic users.

And it will be utterly and completely our own fault, we will do whatever makes us lose our power even though we will get a million hints, a dozen of prompts and every NPC around us tells us not to do it.

and there'd be a massive shitstorm anyway
>>
>>32675743

Are you trying to imply that we're not completely careful and cautious in all our actions? I have no idea what's given you that idea!
>>
>>32676246
We were JUST told to be more careful. Maybe we should tone it down a little.
>>
>>32677410

What? And make a liar out of >>32675743 ?

What kind of rude bastards do you take us for?
>>
>>32677556
More than happy too.

We are an asshole after all.
>>
>>32677599

Yea, but we're also arrogant! You don't really expect us to give some random voice in our head any more weight then we give any of the other voices in our head, do you?
>>
>>32677722
Maybe we should look more at the fact that we almost just died, and we would have if that thing had stronger poison.

Also we're trapped in an alternate reality, though i'd jump through another portal if one was put in front of us.
>>
>>32678060
Mind you I'm not saying we should do crazy things, just take some time to think them through beforehand, and be careful about it.
>>
>>32678088
I'm not saying we should stop doing crazy things

That's what i meant to say
