There was always something about dog Pokemon that got to you. Maybe it was their perceived loyalty, so attractive in a world where your own mother would sell you out in a second. Without wasting a second, you dive into the ruins with gusto, a single Pokeball and only the most basic adventuring gear on your back.

You come across a Fearow sleeping on top of a building, but quickly rule it out as a catch possibility due to its ferocity.

Another few minutes and more walking nets you the chance to catch a strange-looking fluffy creature that you hadn't really come across in your studies.

Yeah, that’s right, Pokeballs are for losers. You spend another little while getting to know Vulpix, surreptitiously checking for any defects but not finding any. This Vulpix has it all, nice white teeth, bright eyes full of energy, and a fluffy tail you can barely restrain yourself from touching.

There’s no real reason to waste any time, now is there? Food is secondary to training, to becoming the best. Scarlet keeps up until you get out of the ruins, but by then you’ve been walking long enough that her fatigue is obvious. She pants a little when you stop, obviously relieved at taking a break.

The day’s sun has already risen to its zenith and crossed it several hours past. Pokeballs are cubes. By touching the cube you can telepathically communicate with the pokemon inside (no guarantee it'll understand you, of course). The other advantage is that you can release the Pokemon almost instantly anywhere in a reasonable radius around yourself that you can see. You just have to will it and it'll happen, which is why people treat Pokeballs like guns. Someone reaches for one in a tense situation and they're getting tackled or shot.

Your crestfallen face throws the Vulpix off. “Sorry, Scarlet, I just don’t know how to use these things.”

You pick up the Pokeball under her wary gaze. Examining the thing, you’re positive nothing’s wrong with it. You bought it from the most reputable shop in town (which isn’t saying much, but still) for a ton of money, there’s no way this thing is malfunctioning. It was brand new when you got it, and these things are state of the art.

What did the box say again? ‘Aim, throw, and hope.’ Wait, did they actually mean that last one? In a flash of inspiration you throw the Pokeball at Scarlet again, but this time you’re hoping to catch her with every fiber of your being. There’s no way you’re going to fail again, Scarlet belongs to you.

Immediately after contacting her it falls to the ground, and twitches once before falling still. This is something you think you recognize.

She’s finally yours. But man was that embarrassing, good thing you don’t hang around with people very often.

Anything you’d like to do before bed? You don’t really have a place to sleep, and the fire never got made because Scarlet refused to light the sticks you gathered. You’ll gather the berries in the morning, so you’ve got an hour or two to do whatever you can think of.

She stops struggling and lets you pet her and brush her hair, and soon enough she’s making that same adorable sound she was when you did this back in the ruins. She maneuvers about so she’s sitting on your lap while her head is on your chest.

Honestly Scarlet is warm enough that you don’t even think you needed the fire tonight. God, her fur is so soft… You could really get used to… this...

Lore and fluff and all that should definitely be investigated to prevent embarrassing misunderstandings from happening in the future. Yes, you've gotta work on your lore since you're shit at talking to people, but it can be done off-camera (like right now) so it's not a huge deal.
