Voiced Intro(Kudos to Voiceanon and Sonlee for this): http://vocaroo.com/i/s1Grk05b6F0v

Your name is Michael Dunkin, and you now work for the Inquisition. Previously you were a sergeant in the 291st Cadian Shock Troopers, but now you find yourself in the company of Inquisitor Christina Massey of the Ordos Xenos. After saving her life at the cost of your men and your life (the old one, at least), you've been officially proclaimed a dead hero and recruited into her retinue. Now, with your new life and future in her hands, you're tasked with looking after Christina's well being. And whatever else that entails.

As the days to the Hive World Sidonas count down, you manage to keep yourself busy however you can. You help Roxy put down three new recruits for Alpha, cross swords with Captain Delmar, and pick up a few of your old pastimes. The familiarity of the old instruments you once played slowly but surely begin to come back to you, and a nightly routine falls into place of a good book and a stiff drink to help you sleep.

A familiar sense of unease passes over you as the ship departs from the Warp, being pulled forward ever so slightly by the departure. Once again you’re thankful for your armor, concealing however green you might look. For their part, none of the others seem too troubled by it all.

“Engines cooling,” An Ensign announces. “Drift just under 30 kilometers. Very nice. Very nice.”

“I expect nothing less,” Delmar beams, turning to Christina and grinning. “Not when we have an audience, at least.”

“Charmed,” Is all Christina replies with. “Take us in at your leisure, Captain.”

She turns to the rest of the typical group gathered, each one varying in their anxiousness to get some solid ground under their feet. You know you’re one, at least.

“You’ve all done more than I have a right to ask, and for that I’m grateful,” She says. “I can’t let us rest long, but I can give you today, at least. We’ll simply have to wait and see for tomorrow.”

“Good enough for me, ma’am,” Roxy says, peering over a crewman’s shoulder at a pictfeed.

“What’s the curfew?” Vincent asks.

“Before tomorrow, if you please,” Christina answers dryly, eyeing the Commander with a ‘don’t even try it’ look. “You’re all free to do as you wish for the day. Except you, Lieutenant.”

“Wouldn't be much of a bodyguard if I was never with you, ma’am,” You answer, and she gives a pleased nod.

“I’m glad,” She says. “The rest of you are dismissed. Walk with me if you would, Lieutenant.”

As the others (minus Delmar) depart, you fall into step with Christina as she takes a slow stride, allowing the others to go on ahead. It’s not too hard of a guess to say she wants to say something without other ears around.

Your ever faithful gut warns you against it, but you decide to say it anyways.

"We're not just here for R&R, are we, ma'am?" You ask her.

"No, and everyone know's it, even if they don't know exactly why," Christina sighs, shoulders slumping ever so slightly. When she speaks again, her tone is soft and tired. "There's always something, Lieutenant. Always. When there isn't, then it's time to be worried."

"Yes, ma'am," You say, a bit off-footed by the sudden change in the Inquisitor. "So, what's the problem for Sidonas? It looked friendly enough last time I was there."

“Oh, it is,” Christina nods, snapping back to her old self. “Normally it’s a fairly boring place. Not too many vices, and those that exist are kept politely behind closed doors.”

“So what’s changed?”

“Recently, a crop of ganger activity has caused some trouble within the capitol itself. Yes, yes, ganger trouble for a Hive World isn’t news. The fact that they’re reportedly sporting xeno weaponry, however, is.”

You stop in your tracks and she turns to face you.

“Are you sure?” You ask.

“No,” She admits. “Which is why you’re accompanying me down to the planet, where I’m meeting a contact. With any hope, he’ll be alive this time. And stay that way.”

“So long as I’m fighting two legs and no more,” You say, and you both share a wry chuckle. “So when do you plan on heading out?”

“As soon as we can. However, if you wish I can wait for you to change into something less… charming.”

Standing head to toe in carapace sporting two firearms, a combat knife, and a grenade launcher, you’re not sure what she means. Alright, maybe you do. Christina herself is dressed in the typical black and gold fatigues of an off-duty armswoman, hair hanging loose with no visible weapon to be seen.

"Maybe you have a point," You tell her.

"I usually do," Christina replies with a smirk.

You set off back to your quarters where Jeeves greets you warmly before bobbing outside to give you some privacy. Though you almost feel straight out of a bad dramapict, you opt for keeping a pistol hidden under your shirt and a knife in your boot.

As you finish redressing you note that, in your haste, you seem to have left the door ever so slightly ajar. However you don't give it too much thought, not wanting to keep the Inquisitor waiting any longer.

Stepping outside, you find Christina and Jeeves idly chatting.

"-ny worse than anyone in his pos-" Jeeves teeters his head in greeting. "Master Dunkin! Best of luck in your newest adventure."

"Thank you, Jeeves," You say, looking to the Inquisitor. "Lead on, ma'am."

"Took you long enough," She says, and you take her tone seriously until she gives a teasing smile.

You arrive in a familiar hangar bay to find Eric awaiting you both by the loading ramp of the Aquila Lander, nose crammed into a book of some sort. As you approach, though, he don't seem too keen on noticing either of you.

As you approach you share a look with Christina and put a finger to your lips. Shaking her head, she only gives you a bemused look before waving you on.

Eric's currently leaned up against one of the hydraulic supports for the ramp, dead to the world. You approach with as much stealth as you can acquire, aided by the lack of armor. Within a few moments your right behind him, peering over his shoulder at the book below.

"I don't think that's regulation," You tell him. "Or physically possible."

Eric, for his part, nearly jumps out of his skin. He goes ramrod straight for a moment before losing his balance. Flailing his arms, he almost recovers before falling down the ramp in a tumble of colorful swearing. When he rights himself and realizes who did that, he groans.

"One was bad enough, milady," He complains as he gets to his feet.

"I'm afraid you'll have to stomach him a while longer," Christina tells him, and with a resigned sigh the pilot trots up the ramp. When he's gone her professional mask cracks just a little, and she gives you what you think is supposed to be a disapproving look.

"What?" You ask. "He needs to be aware of his surroundings."

"You could have simple told him that."

"I could. But it wouldn't have been as fun."

Her only response is to laugh.

You board the Lander and strap in as Christina gives Eric coordinates. Before long you're out of the Antebellum and heading toward Sidonas itself. All the way up here it looks like what a Hive World should look like, but you know there's something below lurking in the shadows.

"I do have one other condition for you," Christina says, and you wait for her to continue. "The remains of the task force you were part of is here, licking their wounds and gathering their strength to finish off the Tyranids still in the sector. Stay away from them and the parts of the city they're in."

You suppose it's a logical choice, pulling the survivors back here. However you didn't really give it much thought until now. Already a question nags at your mind, but you don't know if you should ask.

>"Yes, ma'am."

You're not an idiot. You know what she's hinting at. Not asking hurts, but that life is gone. Now you've got more important things to deal with.

"Yes, ma'am," You tell her.

Though you try not to let it show, it's clear Christina knows how much pain this decision is causing you. Her expression softens and she takes your hand in hers, giving it a gentle squeeze.

"It will get easier," She promises, giving you a sad and knowing smile. "I promise."

You don't really know how to respond, far from being used to someone offering comfort of any sort, so all you do is give her a thankful nod.

The remains of the trip is a quiet one as you stew in your own thoughts, though the Inquisitor's words help. Soon you're within the capitol itself, Oliphi, with it's gleaming high towers on display for all to see. However, the Lander delves a fair ways into the city, coming to where you guess are the middle levels of the city.

You both rise from your seats as the ramp lowers, revealing a modest landing bay with no one else to be seen.

"Keep the meter running, Mr. Farlass," She tells the pilot. "We won't be gone long."

"I'll be waiting, milady."

You both depart and begin making your way down a hall leading to a crowded street. However, before you leave the hall Christina wraps both her arms around one of yours, suddenly much closer than you would like for an Inquisitor. Seeing your expression, she gives you a challenging smirk.

Alright.

So.

There's an Inquisitor clinging to you with a look that's begging for you to say something stupid.

No big deal.

Deciding not to let her get the satisfaction of seeing you squirm, you merely regard her with a grin.

"If you wanted a date, you could have just asked," You tell her in a hushed, secretive tone.

"Oh, don't flatter yourself," She chuckles, swatting your shoulder. "All for show, Lieutenant. All for show."

Though she says this, she seems rather comfortable with her place at your side. You decide it's in the best interest of your health to refrain from commenting on the matter, though.

Relaxing, you play the part of the wandering couple as you walk the streets. Dozens of people clog the streets and the stores lining them, selling all sorts of various items. You spot with interest the occasional Arbite patrol, but they never seem to be needed.

Christina leads you on, occasionally stopping to look through a shop window to squabble over whatever she sees.

"Oh, look, look, look! Do you see that? I've never seen one of those before!"

"That's a fish, honey. You'll get over it. So will the fish."

"Aw, you're no fun today..."

"I'm just not in the mood of wasting money."

Christina gives a dramatic huff, and you get the sneaking feeling that she's actually enjoying herself.

However, before long you reach your destination.

It's a slightly rundown parts store, selling various items going to wheel based vehicles of various shapes and size. At first you think she's just at it again, but Christina gives you a playful wink and you finally allow yourself to be dragged inside.

Judging from the quality of the outside, you're not too shocked to find the inside deserted and in equal condition. A fine layer of dust seems to coat everything, and you both approach the register to find no one home.

Sighing, Christina finally breaks away from you and gives the counter-top three sharp knocks.

A moment passes and nothing happens.

Then a shape rises from behind the counter. You catch sight of a firearm, and in an instant you're moving. With one quick, fluid motion you yank the shotgun from the unsuspecting man's hands and a moment later it's been turned on its owner. The man, a scraggly older fellow with balding grey hair, blinks in surprise at you.

"Hello again, Tiberius," Christina greets him casually. "It's been a while."

"It has," He agrees, eyeing you warily. "Thirteen?"

"Indeed," She says. "Lieutenant Dunkin, meet Tiberius. My man on the ground."

"A pleasure," You say, handing the shotgun back over. "Nice weapon."

"The benefits of working for the Inquisition," He says, putting the weapon away under the counter. "Is he allowed to hear this?"

"He already knows more than some."

Tiberius grunts, signaling for the two of you to follow him into the back room. There, pile upon pile of scrap sits in insecure piles that you're hesitant to be close to.

"Two weeks ago the Arbites went into the underhive to deal with a gang war," Tiberius explains, vanishing into a side room. "Simple enough. The only problem is that the gangers had them outgunned when they got there. Tell me the last time that ever happened."

"Rarely. Losses?" Christina asks.

"Over half the Arbites killed or wounded, with the ganger shits getting away cleanly. Though not cleanly enough."

(Cont.)
>>
>>32639980

When he returns, Tiberius is holding something that makes your breath hitch. You've never been close enough to know the fine details, but you grew to hate it all the same. The damn thing could punch through almost anything, but this version seems smaller than you remember.

"A pulse carbine," Tiberius tells you when no notices your staring, then turns to Christina. "A friend of a friend dropped this into my lap a few days ago. Recovered from the bodies."

Christina remains silent as she takes the weapon and looks it over, inspecting every part of it before speaking again.

"This is virtually fresh off the line," She muses. "It's not difficult to figure out how it got here, but the closest Tau settlement isn't in any position to gain from this. Do they?"

"You've been out of the loop," Tiberuis says, matter-of-factly. "The Tau HAVE been expanding, using the Tyranids as a way of moving in without worrying about Imperial intervention. After the most recent border war ended like it did, though, I suppose they're not scared even if we do respond."

The border wars. You don't know how many there were in total, but you remember being part of two. Neither time was a pleasant experience, but moreso the second. With Chaos you had to worry about your soul being torn asunder, and with Orks or 'Nids it was your guts. However, the Tau had the nasty habit of using tactics. Made fighting them a serious challenge, to say the least.

"So they give a few crates of weapons to criminals?" Christina shakes her head. "That's sloppy, even for them."

This is a bit over your head. As such, you decide to instead keep an ear out for any trouble that might try and sneak its way in.

"What of the black market?" She asks.

"Word's spread quick," Tiberius chuckles. "Now anyone with a handful of thrones is trying to get their hands on pulse weaponry."

"I take it we're already in the market for buying?"

"We are."

"Any offers yet?"

"None."

At the news Christina scowls, glaring down at the weapon in her hands for answers. Sadly, the carbine offers none. Except...

"Tell me you scanned for prints," Christina says.

"Wouldn't be a very good agent if I didn't," Tiberius replies. "We got a couple. Mainly those already wanted for a lot worse than weapon trafficking."

"Except one."

"Except one. A manager of a small-time merchant company. No criminal past, no drug history. I almost fell asleep half-way through looking him over. Sal Noriega, thirty one, unmarried and working for the Brice Merchant Company."

"Can you give me an address?"

"His, his parent's, and his mailman's."

"His will do," She says, than pauses. "And his parents. I want a profile of him and all your other findings on my dataslate by tonight."

"Of course."

Placing the weapon on a nearby table, Christina begins to leave before pausing and looking back.

"Tiberius?" She asks. "Stay safe."

The look he wears is all you need to know that this isn't a common occurrence.

"Lawrence is dead. I won't have two agents dead in the same month," With that she takes her leave.

After watching her go, Tiberius turns to you and chuckles, shaking his head.

"Good luck," Is all he says before beginning to put away the weapon.

It's much more likely that a human group is responsible for the weapons smuggling, probably a rouge trader making independent deals with the Tau.

Supplying cutting-edge weaponry to underhive gangers in one Hive (on a planet with probably 30/40), does not sound like a very smart strategy. It's risky, links straight to them and is extremely unlikely to topple the government in favour of a pro-Tau one.
>>
>>32640740

Making your way out of the store, you find Christina patiently waiting outside. Already, you can see the gears in her head turning as she thinks over what's been laid out in front of her.

"Though I forced you to do this, thank you," She smiles, though her mind is elsewhere. "At least now you're free to go gallivant with Vincent or whoever else you've taken up with."

The sun is almost setting, and though you're curious to explore the town with the others you don't want her over thinking things on the first day.

Direct Tau involvement is unlikely, if only because the influx of alien technology encouraged by he Water Caste is never so overtly offensive at first.

We may be dealing with a purely human link here, but I doubt the gangers are the intended client. More likely someone in the smuggling route got greedy and sold a shipment on the side or his muscle thought the goods they were protecting was worth too much more than what they were getting paid.

"Alright," You say. "Guess it's time to head back."

Christina pulls away from her thoughts to stare at you in confusion.

"I said-" She begins.

"I've been sitting on my ass these past few days," You tell her dryly. "Besides, two pairs of eyes tend to find more than just one."

The Inquisitor thinks this over for a minute before at last giving a halfhearted shrug.

"I suppose that's true," She says.

You both begin making your way back into the street, but before you do you give her a light nudge in the side. When she looks over she finds your arm waiting, the same stupid grin as before on your face.

"You're an idiot," She chuckles, resuming her old place at your side all the same.

"So I've been told," You say.

You make your way back to the Lander at a leisurely pace, and with a quick word with Eric you're on your way back up.

"It's not too late," She offers. "You've got a whole planet to explore."

"I didn't like the last one we explored, ma'am," You tell her. "Too much of a bug problem."

"Indeed," She sighs, leaning her head back and closing her eyes. "Now we're dealing with gangers wielding heavy firepower with possible backing from the Tau. Much more fun."

The Antebellum is a sight quieter with so many of the crew planet-side. However, you're surprised to hear that Delmar decided to remain with the unlucky few picked for the skeleton crew. Maybe he's just more comfortable on his ship.

You reach Chistina's quarters a short time later, which to your surprise is no more extravagant than your own.

"You almost look disappointed," Christina notes with some amusement as she takes a seat at her desk, piled high with various dataslates.

"I was expecting something... more," You shrug, grateful of the addition of a pair of extra seats in front of the desk.

"We can't all have Captain Delmar's taste in living," She chuckles. She looks over a dataslate seemingly at random, but you guess that's the one that received Tiberius' files. "It looks like we've got several weeks worth of reports from various sources with uncertain credibility to go over. Not to mention Sal and everything related to him."

"Sounds fun," You deadpan.

"It is," She says, equally enthused. "Thankfully, Tiberius has a habit of only putting in the important details."

With that you begin digging through a small archive of details hinting at possible workings either with Tau or their equipment. Sadly it's all very vague, and you quickly begin to feel a headache coming along. However, you promised to help Christina and help her you will.

Thing about Pulse rifles is that they use a huge-arse rechargeable battery to power their firing. What we need to look for is power generators or spikes in energy usage in the slums. Those should lead us to the gangsters. We can can then have some agents or arbites do surveillance on the places and nab the gun runners or registration info on suspicious vehicles. In the mean time, lets check municipal energy usage charts across slum areas.
>>
>>32641920
problem with this is, laser based weapons will have the same flaw, masking the rail signitures.

Not to mention, the mind that could track the power flow in a hive city is probably electronic and a magus, not one who gave these reports.

You would have better luck preaching about the emperor on a deamon world.

Thing is, laser cells can be recharged by sticking them in a freaking fire or bathing in the sun. Pulse rifles use energy in the kilo-watt range to fire projectiles with kinetic energy on par with bolters. And I'm saying that as inquisitorial agents, we could get those reports.

>>
>>32642006
that caks out the cells, and if you have a recharging station, why would you use that?

As for the reports, if we did go down that route, it will be allot of hassle for the inquisitor, all that mechanics relations bull to cut through.

But this is up to the inquisitor to decide, im all for suggesting your idea, i just see it taking up allot of time.

Look at it this way: we're hunting for a bunch of dudes who have rechargeable rail guns. These guys are hive gangsters. Not cultists or xenos. We've tangled with these kinds of weapons before. We're pretty sure that they didn't up and build a plant with a dozen kilowatt hour capacity. So logically, we'd check the power grid reports.

>>32642075
It's no OOC to realise they need a power source way beyond what's required for a lasgun (where even sunlight will do the trick over enough time) or even a hellgun.
>>
>>32642891
considering the amount of power required for a laser, it is also not a great leap to assume they made the power requirements a hell of allot more economical.

Or you know, this is warhammer, logic does not dwell easily here.

True to Tiberius' word, most of the more promising items came after the two week-old firefight, in which requests/demands for pulse weaponry went through the roof. The only problem is that, for the most part, no major dealings have gone down.

Any rumor of such a thing going down is just that: a rumor. For a while all either of you do is chase your tails and get aggravated.

Then genius strikes you.

Okay, maybe not genius, but you think it's fairly smart.

"Ma'am," You say, looking up from a dataslate. "Pulse weapons are like lasweapons, only a lot more powerful."

"Yes," She says, not too sure where you're going with this. "They are."

"So they need to be charged like ours, but they'll take a hell of a lot more juice."

When she makes the connection she grins.

"Meaning wherever they're based, there's a spike in energy consumption," She grins. "Michael, you're a genius!"

"Yeah, well..." You chuckle sheepishly at the praise as she keys her vox.

"Tiberius? Can you get me a report of any major or minor power increases in the city within the past few weeks? Yes, I know that's not an easy request. Yes, I know what time it is. No, you don't have a say in the matter. Thank you."

For having originally been your idea, she looks oddly satisfied with herself. However, you don't really feel the need to change her good mood. With that lead now in the process of working itself out, you decide to break up the monotony a bit,

"So just how did you come to acquire Tiberius?" You ask.

"He was an Arbite, originally, before he decided he could do more good with me," She answers. "Stubborn to a fault, set in his ways, but good at his job. For some reason, I tend to attract those types."

You're not sure why she looks at you funny when she says that.

(Cont.)
>>
>>32643002
It's entirely possible the gangers don't even know how to properly recharge these weapons.
>>
>>32643132

"So that should help track down the culprits themselves," She says, moving on. "Now there's Mr. Noriega to deal with."

You've never really understood planets that chose recruitment over conscription. Anyone that would choose civilian life over the Guard simply has something wrong with them. Or, maybe not...

"Sal Noriega," You say, reading from the dataslate. "Parents are longstanding friends of the Brice family. Has worked there for several years, but before... hello."

"What?" Christina asks, equally curious.

"He attempted to join the Guard during a founding year but couldn't pass the physical. His brother did, and managed to make a career out of it before being killed. Three guesses at who killed him, and the first two don't count."

"That doesn't make any sense, though," Christina says, brow furrowing. "Why help the people that killed your brother?"

"You... don't know about the last Border War, do you?" You ask her, a familiar feeling settling in your gut.

"I know it was a failure," She says. "And that you were part of it. Why?"

You're first instinct is to do as she asks and tell her, but you falter. You know about the conflict, but do you remember enough? Do you remember more than you'd like?

Sighing, you lean back in your seat and shut your eyes.

"Michael?" Christina asks, only the faintest hint of worry in her tone.

"It was supposed to be a quick and dirty campaign, swiping at least three planets in one single swoop," You begin, opening your eyes. "Only problem was that it was ill-prepared and run by an idiot who never touched a lasgun in his life. A Lord General who climbed to glory on the backs of dead guardsmen. And damn if he didn't climb high then."

You remember it now. All those guardsmen, tanks, and other weapons of war massed in over a three million man army. A beautiful sight.

"For one, the Tau knew we were coming, so surprise wasn't even an option. Still, we pushed forward because we were told to do so. Took losses in the thousands before we even made any real progress on the first planet. But did we complain? Of course not. Theirs not to question why, Theirs but to do and die."

You're not sure what surprises her more. Your memories, or the fact that you know poetry.

"We took one planet, and with nearly half our army dead we tried to take the second. Then the Tau launched their counter attack, and we got our asses handed to us. Not that I'm not saying we didn't give as good as we got, but there's no other way to put it. The Lord General said charge, and we did. And we died. So, with half a million men left, he makes the decision. A hundred thousand men and women are ordered to remain behind and keep the enemy busy while the rest run. I promise you, everyone stepped forward for that duty."

You grind your teeth and the memory of the man, not wanting to remember his name or face. But you do.

"It was a disaster, and what did the man who led it get? Nothing. Not a damn thing. Now I'm not bitter, but if I was, I'd be willing to do just about anything to get back at the man and group that caused the death of my... brother."

Oh. Oh no.

You seem to have the same thought as Christina, but you instantly regret it. No. Dan would never turn his back on the Imperium, no matter what happened.

...right?

The Inquisitor looks like she's about to try and offer some sort of kind word, but you won't hear any of it. You know you're right, and that's all behind you now.

"What I'm getting at, ma'am, is that that war left few supporters and a lot of opportunity to make sympathizers," You say. "People with a grudge are dangerous."

She nods, uncertain of what really to say. You didn't mean to come off so bitter as you did, but it was what you felt then and what you still feel now. However, maybe telling an Inquisitor this wasn't the brightest idea you've ever had.

“We supplied the bodies, and the Tau supplied the arms,” Christina sighs, rubbing her temples. “And there’s another problem.”

“Ma’am?”

“Lord General Arthur Gagne, the ‘madman’ that led that assault, is in command,” She says. “He’s here, as I said, gathering forces to finish the Tyranid threat.”

“Now that’s just perfect,” You say it before you think, but Christina only chuckles.

“I think now’s the time for a break and a breath of fresh air,” She says. “Why don’t we get a bite to eat, then get back to it?”

After all that, you could deal with a breather. And a sandwich.

Well gents, there's been a bit of a problem and I'm not sure what to do. A friend of mine who was also running a quest has, in his great wisdom, managed to archive my thread under his title and description. Now I'm unable to log this properly, and I doubt his attempts to contact the holy admin will work in time before we slide past page 10.

Any suggestions? Also, would you like for me to break this into a new thread so I can archive that one, or just keep going? Believe me, I'm as happy about this as you are.
>>
>>32644710

Can't you archive a new thread with the foolz link in the description? That's what most QM's do when there's a screw-up.

For myself I'm able to go for at least another hour, but I give no promises about my laptop. If need be I'll use the other, but my notes are on this one. That, and it's still a bit awkward using that keyboard.

>>32644822

Call me daft, but do you mean I can archive it using the foolz link itself, or simply post the link in the next thread?
>>
>>32644958
Err, I think it's the former. You start a new thread with the next update, then archive really fast with the foolz link in the description.
>>
>>32644958
So here's the foolz link: http://archive.foolz.us/tg/thread/32635614/#q32644958
