After interrogating a wizard, you found out a whole load of stuff about magic and that your funky left arm with the weird tats might explode if it keeps eating magic. While that was a bit of a downer, it’s not like this is confirmed as fact, the combat mage informing you that he had never seen or heard of anything like your particular brand of strange before.

Now you’re standing in the chapel before the blind priestess, Elyri, who takes care of the small chapel inside Captain Ryder’s ship the Lady Fortuna after thoroughly embarrassing yourself in the canteen. You still haven’t entirely figured out your reasons for coming here yet, but she seems nice enough and you figure a woman of the cloth won’t be opposed to some small talk and a few questions while you work out exactly what you’re doing here besides admiring the architecture.

You look over your left arm, chew the inside of your lip for a moment before looking back up at the priestess, there’s definitely something about her angular features that makes you think of Nyra and Kyd, but if she was an elf surely those ears would show even beneath her cowl, surely. Oh well, doesn’t matter, you’ve got a few questions for her anyway.

‘You wouldn’t happen to know anything about magic, would you?’

She stares for a moment, and you find it rather unsettling with her sightless eyes before she shakes her head.

‘Only what most others know: that it’s rare, and can be very powerful. I was told there were some warlocks aboard during the attack earlier. Is that true?’

‘Yeah, I fought a few of them,’ killed one too, you think, but decide not to let that little detail slip.

‘Oh my. That was rather brave of you.’

‘So everyone keeps telling me,’ you reply. Her smile widens a fraction.

You glance over at the nine statues that line the wall just behind the modestly sized altar. You know all of them, everyone does, but you don’t know that much about the Nine.

‘Can you tell me about the Gods?’ you ask. Elyri’s smile wavers, replaced by alarm.

‘No, it’s nothing like what you’re thinking. I know about them but I don’t KNOW about them, this is kind of my first time inside of a church building… didn’t really have a lot of time for much else besides trying to keep myself afloat before Ryder picked me up,’ you tell her.

‘That sounds rather… sad,’ she tells you.

‘So I’ve been told,’ you murmur.

(cont)
‘Well, we’ll start from the top: The prime deities of the Pantheon of the Nine are – as I’m sure you know – the Patriarch and his wife: the Mother. Together they sired seven offspring: from eldest to youngest they are the Matron, the Groundskeeper, the Hunter, the Watchman, the Warrior, the Outsider, and lastly, the Gatekeeper.’

‘I knew all that, but go on,’ you tell her.

‘The Patriarch and his wife moulded the world and fashioned the earth and all its inhabitants, but though their power was great, they knew that maintaining the land would require more power than they had. So they broke off fragments of their considerable power and combined them to create their seven children.’

>>
>>32633557
(cont)
‘The eldest and kindest was the Matron, and she, in her unmatched benevolence, took upon herself the role of maintaining the health of all the creatures of the world. Next was the Groundskeeper, a surly, curt god, who nonetheless saw to the task of imparting the wisdom of agriculture to the fledgling races who were destined to master the world. Their brother, the Hunter, a jovial sportsman, taught his craft to any soul canny enough to catch his attention and went on to fashion three great hunting hounds out of the great cliffs to the East. The next was the Watchman, and it was he who was granted the task of keeping the great beacon we call the Sun lit, so that no soul should ever lose his way,’ Elyri pauses to take a breath before continuing.
‘Next was the mighty Warrior, who wrote the very Codes of Honour that our armed forces adhere to, to this very day, teaching man how to defend himself from those who would do him and his loved ones harm. Then there came the Outsider, a trickster and prankster, who wrought schemes great and small, and, in the guise of a travelling peddler, tricked the heathen Magna Republic into reforming their borders no less than eight times. Finally, youngest of the seven children, was the Gatekeeper, and his parents granted him the honour of maintaining the boundary between the world of the living and that of the dead. It is a lonely task, but the honour bestowed upon him with each moment he keeps that gate and the passageway safe is not insignificant.'

‘And so concludes my brief summation of the identity of the Nine, was that all you wanted to know?’

‘Thanks for the information, and no… there’s something I’d like to speak with them about, if that’s okay with you?’

Elryi dons a benevolent expression and waves you closer. ‘Child, the Nine are nothing if not attentive. Come, and through me they will hear what you wish to say.’ She reaches out to take hold of you, you offer her your hand and she leads you to a corner of the chapel, where she seats you down on a pew, herself sitting just next to you.

‘What is it you wish to confide, young Cown?’

(Cown’s body count rests at two: Mr Assassin, and the luckless warlock you caught with the blunderbuss in the boarding action)

You rub the back of your head, unsure exactly of how to start. All of this is new to you, so you aren’t certain if there’s a set of words you’re supposed to say first or–

‘Just say what’s on your mind,’ Elyri says, ‘the Nine care not whether our prayers are eloquent or simple, only that they are earnest.’

That eases you, and you feel yourself relax. You take a deep breath and start.

‘Forgive me Matron for I have sinned, I have taken the lives of two men on my journey, though by the warriors law they were justified killings, there was one whom I killed out of malice, and whose death I still hold satisfaction over. Grant me wisdom and judge me as you will. Amen.’

Elryi opens her mouth to speak, but you’re not done yet.

‘I also beseech you oh noble Gatekeeper, to grant the recently departed crew of this vessel safe passage to the realm of the dead… amen.’ You think about adding more, but nothing else comes to mind and you let Elyri take over.

‘The Nine hear you, child, and they acknowledge the courage it took to speak of the cardinal sin of murder, and the compassion you display by asking for the fate of your fellow crew. In the name of the Matron, I absolve you. In the name of the Gatekeeper, I bless you. By these two thus beseeched your prayers are heard and they too absolve you. Go in peace, young one, and may the Watchman light your way in times of trouble. Amen.’

It sounds grandiose, but by the end of it, you feel like you’ve had a weight lifted from your shoulders. Everything seems a little bit brighter.

‘It is my pleasure to help guide the crew and keep their spirits clean, child,’ she says, her smile radiant.

With that off your back, you bid Elyri good day and decide you’d better try out the armoury and see about securing yourself a weapon. You don’t particularly fancy killing anyone, but at the same time you’re under no illusion that everyone else you meet outside the crew might have the same compunction.

The armoury is located deep inside the ship, and stores pretty much every weapon on the ship, whether that’s a blade or firearm. It also contains all the ammunition, which explains the thick metal door, though the lack of a guard is surprising, especially if Ryder’s suspicions regarding the timing of the recent attack and the calamity in the Lookout turn out to be correct.

‘Kyd? That you?’ a voice booms from the armoury, startling you. A gargantuan figure rounds a corner, easily the tallest person you’ve ever seen, with thick, bulging muscles and a cutting scar stretching across his shaved head. ‘I told you, the blade’s chipped, I’ll need at least a day to…’ the huge crewman trails off as he takes you in.

‘You’re not Kyd,’ he says.

‘Should I be?’ you ask, still a little awed by the sheer size of the man.

‘No,’ he grunts. ‘I don’t recognise you… the new guy, right?’

You nod by way of reply.

‘Guess you’re here to find yourself something that suits you then?’ the giant asks.

‘You don’t know how to fight? Can you punch and kick?’

‘Well, yeah–’

‘Then you know how to fight.’

You shake your head, ‘Look, every fight that I've won has been though luck and the actions of others, and luck won't stay with me forever… also you are very big and very tall, what did you eat and where can I get some?’

A wry smile forms on the big man’s face, ‘I inherited my height from both parents. As for everything else, well that’s what growing up in a dense forest where the only source of meat is bear and wolf will do for you… and oats. Lots of oats.

‘That aside, I can give you a selection of items from our armoury. As for fighting, I can teach you how NOT to get your arse handed to you – we crew need to look out for each other after all – but I can’t promise you that any teaching I give will happen all that often. Well, if he’s going to be busy then you certainly don’t want to impose.

‘It’s fine, just give me some names and let me look at what you’ve got that I can have,’ you tell him. The big guy doesn’t seem surprised by your answer.

‘All righty then, I’ll point you in their direction once we get the good stuff over with, follow me,’ he says as he turns and walks deeper into the armoury. Workbenches are scattered around the interior, and most of them have dismantled weapons with cleaning and maintenance equipment perched atop them. Several racks line the walls, holding rifles, pistols and long-bladed weapons.

‘You’ll forgive me if I don’t give you anything big or heavy. You don’t smell like a shooter and you certainly don’t look like a swordsman, so here’s what I’ve got,’ he says as he leads you to a small table with a few items laid atop the space. First up is a brace of repeater pistols, the sight of which you’re more than familiar with, even though you’ve only fired them yourself the one time.

‘First up, we’ve got a brace of repeater pistols – trademark of any sky-surfing cutthroat and brigand – this beauty feeds shot into the chamber via that little metal bulb on the side. To load it, all you need to do is open the catch, feed the shot in, and let the lovely little mechanics inside do the rest while you take aim and fire.’
(cont)
>>
>>32635414
(cont)
He puts down the pistols and picks up what looks like a very large knife in a sheath. ‘This is a short sword. Looks like Milosz craftsmanship if I’m any judge but that’s not important. What’s important is that the tip of the blade is triangular; meaning anyone you stick is going to find themselves in a lot of pain and losing a lot of blood. It’s also light – typical Protectorate fare – meaning wielding it is cake. Unfortunately, like most Protectorate blades, it’s also fragile. I’ve tried toughening it up with some good old Visan alloys, but in the end it is what it is, so if you take it, I’d try dodging rather than deflecting.’

He sets the short sword down and moves onto the next item, this one a hatchet, or battle hatchet. Ax? You don’t know. The small rear blade also appears to have been replaced by something more resembling a hammer’s head. ‘This is something the lads found on a little mission we undertook last year. Supposedly it was lying next to an old skeleton in a den of Wyvern’s. It’s the heaviest thing here but put some momentum and a bit of strength behind it and I doubt anything short of heavy plate will stop it. The back’s also useful if you just want to brain a foe, or even use it for basic work – hammer’s a hammer after all, provided you mind the main blade.’
(cont)
>>
>>32635481
With that he sets it down and moves onto the last thing on the table; what looks like a sleek, dark metal vambrace. ‘Now this… is a real collector’s piece. Ryder brought this in one day and asked me to look it over, see if I couldn’t find out who made it. Never did, but I did find out what it does and let me tell you kid, it’s a real treat.’ He slides the gauntlet on his hand, it’s an ill fit, and it takes him a few hard tugs to pull it across his meaty wrist.

‘Say someone’s grabbed you, you’re at their mercy. Well, with this beautiful little thing, all you do while they’re gloating is push down on the little pressure pad by the palm of your hand with a finger or two and…’ he pushes down and an eight-inch blade extends from the top of the vambrace, shooting over his knuckles. ‘Surprise! Keeps your forearm safe AND dishes out the death. I’d take it myself but I’m rarely out of the Armoury and as you’ve no doubt seen it takes a bit of effort getting it on someone as thick as I am. Anyway, that’s what I've got that I think would suit you, so now you my lucky friend, get a choice of two.’

You think for a minute, mulling on the choice, before reaching for the dark vambrace and taking the brace of pistols.

‘Fair choice kid,’ the big man says, ‘now as for those names: first up’s Julian, little older than you I think. Dunno where he came from or what he used to do but he’s one of the finest shots I’ve ever seen. You’ll probably find him either in the canteen or up on deck somewhere playing his harmonica.’

‘Next up is Eoin; he’s a lanky guy from the coastal regions; decent guy but don’t ever lend him money. He can teach you blade craft, or how not to get hit by blade craft thinking about what you’ve taken.

‘Lastly is Feyn. She’s our First Mate Margaret’s niece and almost as fierce, so I don’t think I need to tell you not to let her size fool you: there’s a reason she heads her own section of armsmen after all. She can help you sort your technique out, probably better than I can considering you’ve both got similar physiques. That’s about it off the top of my head. Anything else lad?’

‘Is there any armour I can use?’ you ask as you fit the vambrace to your right arm. You figure you can block any physical attack with that while anyone shooting magic off at you will get a dose of lefty. You slide the brace over your torso and sheath the pistols in their holsters.

‘Afraid that’s the one thing we don’t have, not in any sufficient quantity anyway lad. Besides, most of it’s only good for slowing you down in this modern era, and most beasties you ever fight will tear through all but the heaviest plate like parchment, and the only place you’ll ever find any heavy plate is inside the armoury back in Harlowesburg, and while Ryder had a lot of pull, he never had quite THAT much pull… not that we’ve ever needed it if you ask me.’

You nod slowly. It was worth a shot at least.

‘Also where can I find Feyn?’

‘That eager to start are you? Unfortunately I can’t tell you for certain where she’ll because she’s always on the move; can’t sit still for a minute she can’t. Just tell a few people you’re looking for her and eventually she’ll find you, or you’ll run into her, in which case she’s a lass about your age with a sour expression. That help?’

‘Yeah, thanks. I guess that’s it then,’ you turn to leave but then stop as you realise something.

‘I just realised, you never told me your name.’

‘Gideon, the Lady Fortuna’s Master Armourer,’ the big man answers.

‘Cown,’ you reply. ‘Thanks again.’

You think back on how large this ship is, and how many places there are to look. Then you think about what Gideon said, and eventually you decide that just wandering around the ship probably isn’t such a hot idea. You decide to head on up to the canteen, see if she isn’t there. If not, then you can at least spread the word that you’re after her.

No matter what time of day it seems to be, the canteen always appears to be in use. A fair amount of people are sat down chowing down, some of them taking long, deep gulps from pewter tankards. Despite this, however, the atmosphere is muted, and you notice that the chatting is a few notes softer than it usually is. Probably mourning those crewmen lost in the attack, you think.

You notice Kyd is sat down eating awkwardly with one arm, his busted one still healing, a significant group of gunners headed by Limwitz, and another, larger group of nondescript crew. Meanwhile, by the serving tables, the two ginger twins stand with plates of their own, snagging a quick food break while no one’s asking for anything.

You’ve not really had much of a chance to chat with Kyd recently, so you head on over to him first.

‘Doing okay there?’ you inquire, observing the way he awkwardly handles his fork to shovel mashed potato into his mouth. He glances up at you.

‘Oh, hey Cown, sit down if you want. And no, not really. Two arms, and that screaming bastard with the mace had to pick my dominant one… oh well, could have been worse.’ He mutters.

You say nothing as he spears a sausage and chomps one end of it off, chewing roughly before swallowing. ‘So, what’s up then?’ he asks.

‘I’m looking for someone called Feyn, thought maybe you might know her or where she might be.’

Kyd almost chokes on his sausage and stares bug-eyed at you. ‘Why in the name of all that’s holy are you searching that bloodthirsty dyke out?!’

Okay, you certainly weren’t expecting THAT reaction.

‘What’s up? You have some history or something?’

‘She kinda sorta hates my guts. Long story short: I hit on her once and the entire ordeal ended badly with a lot of blood and tears shed.’

‘Right… so I take it you don’t know where she is then.’

‘Don’t know, don’t WANT to know. Don’t get me wrong, I respect her, and her… tastes have given me and a few others quite a show, but I don’t want anything to do with her. Long as she stays at least ten feet away from me and my sister, we’re good.’

‘What’s Nyra got to do with it?’ you ask. Kyd gives you a blank look.

‘Right, my bad, I forget sometimes that you’ve had no life at all. Feyn is… well… she prefers lady company.’

Oh. OH.

‘Oh…’ you say, understanding blossoming.

‘Yeah, and she’s not exactly subtle about it either, and thanks to that, my poor sister’s practically terrified of her. So if it’s all the same to you, please don’t mention that name around her.’

‘Okay, I won’t,’ the mention of Nyra brings back memories of the incident you had scant hours ago and you can already feel your cheeks heat up as you recall the laughter and cat calls from the crew who had crowded around to watch. You decide to swap topics to try and get it off your mind.

‘So why exactly are you looking for her anyway?’ Kyd asks.

You decide there’s no harm in him knowing the reason. ‘I’m hoping she might teach me how to fight.’

‘Yeah she could do that all right, probably won’t but still…’

‘What, she have something against men?’

‘Course not, she runs a little crew of armsmen, most of them are guys. She wouldn’t have done that if she couldn’t stand our type. What I’m saying is that she probably won’t teach you because A: that little thing that happened here? I know about it, and if I know about it, SHE knows about it. That definitely won’t earn you many points. B: she’s a lazy cow. Damned good at what she does – which, incidentally is kicking the crap out of any troublemakers – but whenever she’s not doing that she’s just wandering around the ship always claiming she’s got something she needs to be doing somewhere else.’

Your throat feels uncomfortably dry right now. You must be making some sort of face because Kyd sniggers. ‘Relax little bro, who Nyra sees or doesn’t see is her business; she’s a big girl now, she can take care of herself… mostly.’

‘Okay, that aside,’ you say, trying to steer the topic away from the cute elf mechanic, ‘is there anything you can tell me about Feyn?’

‘I’ve told you that she’s dangerous and probably won’t like you or teach you, what else is there to know?’

‘Anything else BESIDES that?’

‘Nine above you are actually set on this aren’t you? Okay, new deal: I’LL teach you how to fight. It won’t be pretty and it sure as all hellfire won’t be considered sporting by any means, but I can mostly guarantee you that it’ll keep you alive in a brawl. How’s that sound?’

(I leave to type this shit up for a few minutes and find that while I was gone, you guys are plotting murder and/or dickings)

‘Are you sure your arm’s up for that? Doc gave me a lot of grief about mine when I came aboard.’

Kyd’s mouth spreads into a grin you can’t describe as being anything other than wicked.

‘Cown,’ he says, ‘this thing here is nothing more than a handicap.’ You wonder about that, considering it’s his dominant arm that’s out of commission but you don’t say anything. Eventually, after mulling it over in your head, you decide that learning from someone you know will probably be easier than someone you don’t.

‘Okay, deal,’ you say, ‘but why does this bother you so much?’

‘Uh, guy who now works with and is fairly close to my sister wants to learn from the psycho bitch who occasionally stalks and tries to grope her. Seriously not seeing how I might have a problem with that?’

‘But you said earlier that who she–’

‘And I also said that she TERRIFIES her. Also she really can’t take a hint, and call me crazy but I don’t think Nyra’s into girls like Feyn is.’

Which is fair enough.

‘So, when can we start?’ you ask.

‘Not today,’ Kyd says. ‘If you’re not too busy with your work down in engineering, come find me up by the bridge, we’ll find a quiet spot so I can see what you’ve got.’

‘Okay then,’ you say, not liking it, but hey, he’s the one agreeing to teach you how to fight with a broken arm and potentially save you a lot of grief, the least you can do is cut him a little slack.

You think you should probably try to find the next person of interest now that you’ve secured yourself at least some tuition. With a couple of pistols you figure you should probably learn how to shoot as well, and you leave to find Julian, who you are told, after a brief inquiry as to his location with Kyd, that he is up on the top deck.

The sky is deep blue, while the sun – the Watchman’s beacon, you recall Elyri telling you – beats down in all its sapphire glory. Sparse clouds dot the sky, but even they can’t mar the flawless picture the day presents like a gift. Without consciously knowing about it a grin breaks out on your face.

A shrill sound snatches your attention and you snap your head around. Sitting by the edge of the deck, with his legs hanging over the side through the railing, is a blond male in his early or mid-twenties fumbling with a harmonica. A small bottle sits at his side and every so often the man you believe must be Julian takes a swig from it before raising the harmonica to his lips and playing.

You’ve heard quite a few harmonicas played in your area, it being one of the few instruments those in the slums with any musical aptitude could reasonably afford, but even the best of those doesn’t sound even a tenth as good as Julian does. For a moment, you think this is what true art is, and when he stops, you almost ask him to continue.

Then you remember why you’re up here and stroll on over.

You think deep and hard about how you should go about introducing yourself, before eventually deciding that a simple introduction probably won’t hurt.

‘Hey,’ you call. Julian pauses and turns around to face you. He wears a mild expression on his lean, thin face, and his blond hair is long and falls just above his neckline. A small star tattoo adorns his right cheek.

‘Uh, hi?’ he says, uncertain.

‘I’m Cown, the new guy… that was a pretty awesome tune you played there.’

He shrugs, ‘Ain’t nothing. Thanks though.’

‘You’re Julian right?’ you say, trying to phrase it as a question despite the fact you’re all but certain as to his identity.

‘The one and only.’

‘Awesome. Look, I was down in the armoury and I recently got myself a couple of pistols and Gideon told me you’re a crack shot so I was wondering if you might, you know, show me how to shoot?’

He spends a few moments just looking at you for a moment. His face betrays not a single emotion, and for a moment you wonder if he’s just thinking up a nice way of turning you down. Eventually, however, he shrugs and says: ‘Sure.’

‘Seriously?’ you ask, ‘just like that?’

‘Not like I’ve got much else to do around here. In the gunnery we usually just make sure the cannons are operational and aside from that there’s not that much to do unless we get spotted by a military ship or some pirates or bounty hunters looking to make a name for themselves.’

‘Oh, well… sweet. When can we start?’

‘Now work for you?’

‘Well– absolutely!’

‘Swell,’ Julian says calmly before picking himself up and grabbing the bottle before motioning for you to follow. He leads you to the end of the deck before draining the last of his drink in one gulp and placing it atop the railing. He takes a few paces back until he’s standing some ten metres away.

‘Line up on me and try to hit that bottle,’ Julian says in a calm voice.

The shot echoes through the crisp, clean air, and the ball shoots past the bottle, grazing it. The bottle shivers on its perch before toppling over the side to fall earthwards. You glance back at Julian, who has taken a few steps back and, hand on chin, appears to be observing you with a calculating eye.

‘Hmm,’ he says after a moment. ‘I’d say you’re pretty average at the moment… but yeah, I guess I can make a shooter out of you. You just want to know how to use those pistols or are you interested in some of the bigger stuff too?’

The thought of learning how to shoot bigger, badder firearms stokes the fires of something primitive inside you, but you curb it quickly. Fun as that sounds, you doubt you’ll get the chance to use anything larger than your current armaments.

‘Just these to start with, but maybe once I get better you could show me how to handle some other guns too?’

‘Fair enough, and yeah, I guess so,’ Julian says as he scratches his chin. ‘C’mon and follow me down, we’ve got a place we can use as a shooting range in the hold.’

The spot he talks about is a sizeable space you imagine is at least the length of a third of the ship. The wall you stand opposite is positively pockmarked and marred by gunshot, with dents, holes and scorch marks all across the steel.

‘Okay, I’ll set up some more targets over at about the maximum effective range of those pistols and you’ll try to cap them as fast as you can, you dig?’

‘Sure,’ you reply with a confident nod. As he says, Julian sets several more empty bottles atop a worn, battered crate before making his way back to a crudely drawn firing line marked in chalk.

‘All right,’ he says, ‘go.’

You take a deep breath, calming yourself before snatching both pistols and drawing them in a motion that almost feels right to you before levelling each of them at a target. Without so much as flinching you unload both guns on your targets.

Julian put up five bottles.

You fire five shots.

Five bottles shatter explosively as shot rips through them.

Silence reigns in the hold before you hear an appreciative whistle from Julian.

‘Damn. Either I messed up my earlier assessment or you’ve just got that kind of talent when it comes to a fast draw. That was pretty good. More than good even.’

‘I uh… thanks,’ you say, not quite believing that you managed to achieve that.

‘Looks like we can step it up a notch then,’ Julian says; the corner of his mouth stretching into a grin.

(This is probably about as /k/ as it gets, my knowledge of firearms and how to go about using them mostly consisting of shit I've seen in film, video games and the occasional comic book)

Julian steps back into the range, this time with some hand-drawn targets.

‘Okay man, these things are placed further outside effective range of your guns. You can still hit them, but it takes some effort. First of all, you need to stand with your legs a little further apart, yeah, just like that. Next you need to make sure your breathing is solid and steady – too fast and it’ll spoil your aim. Keep your arms slightly bent, recoil will snap them like twigs if you hold them straight like that. If it’s at all possible you should find something to brace your arms on to help steady your aim but we’ll try without first – if you can hit a target at that range without assistance, you’ll definitely hit it with. Finally, when you fire, you need to gently squeeze the trigger, not pull, that’s always a mistake rookies make.’

You follow his instructions as best you can before lining up your targets. Breathing: steady. Arms: bent just like he said. Posture: as good as you can manage.

Time to see if that little display earlier wasn’t just a fluke.

Great Nine above you didn’t know such a sharp, clapping din could make you feel so ALIVE! The hold reeks of cordite and smoke and scorched paper. Every one of your targets has a number of holes drilled neatly through the centre, a testament to your hidden talent. The weight of both pistols feels completely natural in your hands, and contrary to your blundering in the melees you’ve fought, you don’t feel so much as a shake.

Julian stares at the targets, then back to you.

‘I think I might just have found myself some competition,’ he says, nodding with approval at your display of marksmanship. You don’t respond, still rolling on high from the way it all felt so right.

You know it’s late, but at the same time you don’t feel particularly tired, so you decide to have a little wander around the vessel. Who knows maybe you’ll bump into someone.

You spend a good amount of time just strolling about, popping into the canteen for a bite, being told to watch out for Feyn by a few crewmen (they’re still calling you “Cherry” and if the sinking feeling is any indication they’re not going to stop any time soon), you decide to head on back topside for some fresh air.

Night has fallen; the stars and two small moons light the pitch black night sky: shining jewels in a black quilt that stretches as far as the eye can see. Down below you are the endless fields so typical of Visa outside the cities, or so you’ve been told. A few other crew are topside too, one of whom has started a small, controlled fire in a steel drum barrel, and a few others are cloistered around it, swapping stories and sharing drinks.

A light breeze plays upon you, and you shiver involuntarily at the sudden drop in temperature. It’s so serene, so lovely. It’s difficult to imagine there was such carnage earlier today, or that even now a nation-wide hunt is playing out with the intention of finding all of you. A part of you wishes this night, and the positive feeling it brings, would just go on and on.

You hear a door open and you crane your head to the side to investigate. Nyra steps out onto the deck, still garbed in her mucky overalls, with her hair done back up in that braid that makes her seem like she’s wearing a wreath of her own hair. She stretches her arms out, and you can make out the relieved sigh she releases as she eases out her stiff limbs.

You turn your head back around, staring out back into the night sky. You’re not sure exactly what to feel around the elven mechanic since that incident in the canteen and even the mere memory of it sends you into a flushing mess. You feel a sudden, burning fury at your own lack of control over your emotional state which vanishes as quickly as it appears. So deeply engrossed in thought are you, that you don’t even notice Nyra sauntering over to you before leaning over the railings next to you.

‘You okay there?’ she asks, and you jump in surprise. Nyra giggles at your reaction.

‘Easy there, you know me, I don’t bite,’ sweet Nine above is it the moonlight that makes her look this gorgeous or is it just you?

‘Good, good,’ she says.

‘So what’s up? Doing okay?’ you ask her.

‘Not much, Balfour gave me a break and I wanted to stretch myself out and get some fresh air. I love my job but after a while the charm of machine oil and grease starts to wear a bit thin. And I’m fine, thank you; little tired but otherwise fine. How about you?’

‘Well… I found out I have a knack for shooting things,’ you tell her.

‘Huh?’

You tell her about your trip to the armoury, and your meeting with Julian. He seemed pretty nice overall, a little passive, but decent in your books. You then tell her about your stunning performance under Julian’s tutelage.

‘Huh,’ she says when you finish. She doesn’t say anything for a while, content for the moment to simply stare off into the distance.

‘Well, if you’re good at it, and you enjoy it then I guess that’s good then. Just… don’t enjoy it too much though, promise?’

You’re not really sure what to say to her. You’re tempted to ask her what she means, but the serious expression on her face stops you cold.

‘Okay,’ you say after an agonising moment. She doesn’t say anything, doesn’t move, she just smiles.

It’s the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen.

Suddenly you’re fully conscious of everything you’re doing. Is your posture okay? Does your breath smell? Are you sweating at all? Ye Gods it just won’t end, what in the Abyss is…

And then you get it.

You like her. Not just as a friend or colleague, but for the stunning, smart young woman she is; race be damned. You like Nyra. Maybe you even love her. No, that’s ridiculous, you’ve never felt anything close to this feeling before, what the fuck do you know about love?

But maybe you can find out. You’d like to anyway, and with the moons shining down on you and the stars lining the heavens and the cool, soft, almost encouraging breeze, you could take a gamble.

‘Hey, can I tell you something?’ you ask her, trying to get it all out before something stops you from doing so or the moment passes.

‘Hm?’ her ears perk up and she cocks an eyebrow at you.

‘I…’ you start but the words catch in your throat. Your blood freezes in your veins, the words won’t come out. You work your lips but NOTHING comes OUT.

Well, that’s pretty typical for you isn’t it. You’ve got barely any clue how to talk to regular people, how in all eight layers of the Abyss did you of all people expect to be able to tell a girl your feelings?

For a second you wallow in self-pity, forget it, you probably never had much of a shot anyway. After all, look at her with her flawlessly sculpted face, high cheekbones and cute straight-edged nose. Then there’s you. You’re exotic compared to most Visans with your darker skin tone, silvery hair and violet eyes but other than that what do you bring besides a whole mess of social awkwardness?

And then you feel it. A smouldering flame burning in your gut that tells you that you’re sick of being dealt shit. It was this fire that saw you leap at Dagg’s murderer and hellfire take the consequences, the same fire that saw you stand up for this girl in the first place, the same fire that saw you successfully avenge Dagg, and the same fire that later saw you through a brutal melee. Don’t like the way you are? Then you’ll change for the better, and it starts here and now.

‘I THINK I LOVE YOU!’ You shout. You can almost feel the crew present on the top deck snap their heads towards you. In that moment following the confession, you could almost swear that EVERYTHING went silent, that everything hinged on however Nyra takes this.

She’s staring up at you, her expression one of total, complete surprise. For some time all she does is stare and stare, and it’s murder. Eventually she blinks and all of a sudden her face flushes deep crimson.

‘Wow…’ she says, ‘that’s– I…’ she’s completely lost for words and a part of you is enjoying the show, the rest is anticipating whatever answer comes. She spends an entire minute floundering until finally she bends over, leaning her crown against your chest and she starts…
Giggling?

That’s not good. You feel your shoulders slump. That’s it then, might as well go kill yourself to spare yourself the humiliation of rejection. You start to turn but she grabs onto your shirt with a hand.

‘You yelled it… you actually went and yelled it right there in front of everyone here,’ she says, barely stifling her giggles. ‘That is just so… you.’

‘Yeah I’m a real riot,’ you reply.

Eventually she stops giggling and looks up at you. Her face is still flushed but at the same time she seems… happy?

‘I’ve not done this before,’ she says, ‘I’ll probably be really bad at it.’

Wait what?

‘But… oh Nine this is SO embarrassing… I think I could give it a shot with you…’

You can’t stop the laugh that escapes your lips; it’s a mixture of disbelief and tension. ‘What… you’re saying you’re more embarrassed than me who just…’ you can’t stop yourself and you hitch over and start laughing. At you, at her, the circumstances that brought you here.

You keep it going for a while, and you notice that you’re starting to draw a sizeable crowd, but you don’t care, too immersed in trying to keep your ribs from breaking, until finally, like someone’s turned a tap, the laughter dies and there are you gasping for breath with Nyra still leaning against you.

‘Hey…’ she says, and you glance down at her.

And then her lips meet yours.

And that's the ball game. Part 7 done.

I'll be frank I actually don't really think all that much of the last few posts I made with the love confession. Despite that, however, I had to get that done with at some point and it was either this or a hand-holding scene right at the end, which is going to have to come within the next two weeks because after the 22nd I'm not going to have any sort of time to run this whatsoever and my regular schedule doesn't really allow me to do this all that often to start with. It's kind of a bummer considering I had all kinds of shit planned, such as some stuff concerning Cown's magic arm and his backstory but, well, life sucks, so what else is new?

I thank you anons who support this by playing along with my crazy writefagging. It's not always comfortable, but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't fun. See you all in a few days.
