The seven of them grumble out a chorused “morning” as they groggily evacuate the tents. You respond in kind and take another sip from your flask. Ever since the beach landing, it’s been like this: chorused morning greetings, chorused affirmatives. It’s like they’re all on the same vox channel. Was this instilled in them at the orphanage?

The boys wave off the three other girls as they go to dismantle the girls’ tent, telling to drink their breakfast first. They sit next to you on the frosted grass and refill their water from the extra flasks. For a bit, the only sounds are the swishing of protein mix as the morning’s meal is made, grunts and the thumps of gear as the boys pack up. You haven’t heard the chirp of a single bird since the exercise started. The only animal you’ve seen so far was the grox on the first night, though you assume there must be others since the servitor fired at something besides the eight of you last night.

You observe the three other girls sitting around the campfire with you. Alizabeth looks into the dying flames after she chugs down her breakfast in one go. Sabbatine’s face you imagine mirrors your own, drinking and pausing, drinking and pausing, then looking around a little bit. She catches your gaze and manages a weak smile before she takes another sip of slab and joins Alizabeth in staring at the embers.

Rena sits next to you, wrapped up in her blanket. It’s been getting colder by the day. She sniffles, her nose tipped by a tinge of red. The weather, though, does not account for her eyes. You heard her weep the night before, and it obviously didn’t stop after you went to sleep ahead of everyone else.

“Rena, you okay?” you ask. It’s day four and you’re supposed roommate and squadmate for the next six years, possibly further after that, is breaking down after her first taste of combat.

You are Evangeline Salome Rosalina de Fuentes, nobility of Alamos Primus. Your father, an Imperial Guard commander, died in the line of duty. Your mother died giving birth to your fourth sibling and only brother. Newly orphaned, you are now a cadet at the Schola Progenium of Loyola Tertius. This is your final stretch of the first training exercise.

“Girls, we’re ready to go. I think we’ll arrive already before the evening,” says Ander. You don’t know how permanent your leadership of the squad is, but you think you could settle with him being squad leader. Not that there’s much competition as far as you’ve seen for the position.

He, Jakko, and Fortuno are already mounted up. Fortuno sits straight in his saddle, and no grimace crosses his face as his horses prances around impatiently, but you don’t know where he was hit. The horses seem to have been undisturbed by the fight with the servitor just as they were with the grox. Bartamaeus looks at you with a mixture of expectation and something else you can’t detect, both of his feet still on the ground and his hand clenched on the pommel of his sword.

Rena tries to get up without answering you, but you grab onto her sleeve and say again, “Are you doing okay? You’ve got me worried.”

“I’m fine,” she says immediately. You’re not satisfied with her answer given the way she looks right now, but she pulls her arm away and walks over to her horse. You and Bartamaeus are the last to mount, and the squad begins the final day of riding.

The squad goes through the morning in its usual silence, with you and Ander away from the other six as outriders. On occasion, you have to shake yourself out of a reverie as you marvel in the nature of a planet exotic to you. Inevitably, thoughts of your departed parents creep in. From your perspective, you knew of their deaths within days of each other and it’s been less than a week since then, though from what you know of warp travel, you could have spent months in transit. You can still vividly picture the black cloth draped over your mother’s portrait in the house after your brother’s birth, and you suppose the same has been done for your father’s. You try not to think on it too much, and shove the thoughts into a corner, instead imagining what the next six years have in store for you.
>>
Your mind is a bit distant as the eight of you stop for a mid-morning break at the first stream you come across. The squad rode across the largest river marked on the map late yesterday and the forest is relatively much less dense here. Passing the river puts you roughly more than three fourths of the way back. It’s only the third day. Might just be the first squad back, you figure. You take a sip of fresh, iodine-tasting water from your flask and don’t notice Bartamaeus marching up to you until he slugs you across the face with a left hook.

You’re caught completely off guard and his punch sends you reeling several steps and onto the ground. You drop your flask and water spills out of the mouth onto the ground.

“Puta!” you say, swearing in the Alamosian Gothic dialect. “What the hell was that for?”

You rub your chin and restrain yourself from returning his blow. Bartamaeus rubs his own knuckles and glares at you fiercely. Anticipating another punch, you get up and ready for him.

“You left us last night. Went straight to sleep. You’re our squad leader,” he says, the volume of his voice rising with every word. “Never leave your men on the battlefield, wounded and weary. Aloysius Geffen, M38. ”

how about you stop propagating stupid myths and not make yourself look like a fool, they use shotguns and boarding guns because of the tight quarters they fight in and the types of warfare they conduct on board ships, not because they are afraid of a piddly little flashlight accidentally melting a small amount of a bulkhead that is at least a couple hundred feet of solid steel/adamantium away from the hull exterior

You think back to your father’s lessons. He didn’t teach you just how to fight and survive. He taught you how to lead as well.

You say to him, "'A good soldier obeys without question. A good officer commands without doubt.' I trusted that you would wake me if you needed me. What else was I to do in that situation? Stay up all night and be useless today?"

“It still doesn’t make it right. Doesn’t make it honorable,” Bartamaeus says.

“So you decided to strike me?” you ask. “That’s an offence punishable by death. If this were the real thing, I could have you shot on the spot.”

“If I have my way, you won’t be squad leader for long.”

“You guys, stop fighting!” says Rena. The rest of the squad was just standing there watching the confrontation. “We’ve nearly died twice already and you two are fighting over ideologies! Evangeline, you did leave us, but Barty, honor isn’t everything! I just want us to survive this… I don’t even know what I’m doing here…”

She falls to her knees and breaks into tears.

Commissar's are meant to be feared. There's a reason why Cain and Gaunt are considered to be exceptions.

But we don't need to be going down the Commissar route to instill discipline in our own bloody squad, any Stormtrooper Sergeant (or Sister Superior) worth their salt would do the same.

I think we're actually allowed to perform field executions in the absence of an officer or commissar.

>>32629031
Eh, I'm fine with option 2. It shows that we are offering our support and at the same time making it clear that she needs to get her act together pronto.

>Commissar roles
They have no 'rank' perse. They don't lead men, they enforce disclipine. That means dealing with derlecition of duty, organising firing squads and basically being a superpowered Military Police. They technically don't even have the power to give even a Lieutenant an order, but the fact that they have the power to shoot the Lieutenant for cowardice or incompetence means the officers generally pay very close attention to their advice.

Which ironically would suck nearly as much since we'd be pretty much stuck to dealing with the aftermath of drunken shenanigans and the occasional brawl-gone-too-far firing squad.

At least in a FUBAR regiment a commissar would be actively preventing a mutiny rather than just being a fancy MP.
>>
>>32629200
>Are you retarded? There are plenty of competent IG platoons.
which have no need or requirement of a commissar which would mean one would not be assigned to them...
>>
>>32629274
But that's false. A platoon doesn't need to be incompetent to have a commissar assigned to it.
>>
>>32629274
I think every IG regiment has at least one commissar assigned to them.
>>
>>32629274
>>32629320

I imagine it's worked out more on the availability of commissars than the competency of the regiment, though that doubtless comes into it.

If you're in a sector with a suitable numbers of commissars being churned out by the Schola's then you'll have them spread out nicely across the regiments and navies of the sector.

A sector with a much more limited number of Schola's would probably make do with Commissar's being assigned on a regimental, if not even divisional, basis.

You unball your fists and give Bartamaeus a glare before turning away in dismissal. As you move past him to go to Rena, you hear him start to draw his blade.

You whip around and say, “Do you really? It can wait if you want a duel.”

Then you go over to Rena. The poor girl. The galaxy will not be kind if she doesn’t toughen up somehow, especially with the paths that you and she, as cadets, will be sent on. You grab her by the arms and lift her up. You hug her until she stops crying. Thankfully her weeping doesn’t last for more than another minute. You didn’t cry when your mother died. You were sad, sure, but another of Father’s lessons was that every man dies.

When she stops crying, you hold her out from you and put your hands at her shoulders. You say “You’re here for a reason, a purpose. You’re here because you have something in you that nobody else has. What any of those are, I don’t know, only the Emperor, may he protect us”—the six others chorus this with you—“knows. But if you’re not able to walk by yourself on your own two feet and deal with what’s thrown out you, you’ll die. Just like every man must, and go to the Emperor’s side.”

She sniffles a bit, and you lift up her chin to look her straight in the eye. “So let’s work hard as a squad together, and try not to do that, yes?”

She just nods, and so do the rest when you look around at them. Bartamaeus still has an angry look, but he nods nevertheless.

You could head back out immediately, but there's no rush. It's the third day out of the week you've been given, and you're nearly there.

“Let’s mount up, no more dilly-dallying!” you say. You grab your spilled flask from the ground, fill it up in the stream, and pop an iodine pill in it. It’ll take another half hour for it to be drinkable.

“Don’t you guys want to be last?” you ask them once everyone mounts up. You yell as you kick your horse to go. They yell in the negative and follow promptly, Ander pulling ahead to join you as an outrider. You meet Bartamaeus’ glare as you glance back before the trees block most of your vision of the main group.

A few hours of conversation-less riding later, you and Ander stumble upon a dirt road. After getting back with the main group, you decide not to ride upon the road proper, instead riding to the side. The road is out in the open, trees cleared for a couple meters on either side. You’d be prime targets for ambush.

You ride parallel to the path for an hour. It ends at rockcrete walls thrice your height. The squad collectively comes to a halt at the metal gates at the end of the line. Once the thud of hooves on hard ground cease, the gates groan and open inward. You nudge your horse forward onto the paved road. A PDF lieutenant barks directions to you as the squad rides forward and the gates close behind you.

[SESSION END]

I wanted to write more, but this is the best place to stop before hiatus.I'll be going on hiatus for at least a month due to the fact that I'm starting school this Monday and have been a NEET for the past year. I need time to get readjusted. Rest, I assured, I fully intend on coming back.

Ah, alright. Thanks for running!
>>
>>32630379
thanks for the thread, as for XP, I say we level Int, Per, Agi, End to 3 each, which would cost 16xp and leave us with 2 in the bank

keep us updated via twitter, I'll be warmly waiting this quests return

Thanks and good luck!

I'll be around for another hour before heading to sleep.
Archiving on sup/tg/ would be appreciated.
Do you guys have any questions as to the direction of the quest? You guys hardly ever have any, and there are many things I can answer OOC since Evangeline knows them.
>>
>>32630379
Til next time.

Looking forward to it.

First off I wanted to say thank you for running one lasttime before you went on hiatus. Also it might be a little early to say but I also was wondering if you were planning on continuing the quest after Evangeline gets out of the schola or if that would be another quest for another time?
>>
>>32630454
I do enjoy the quest. Pretty cool stuff.

My only grievance is our heroine's... accent. Personally I don't much care for "puta" and other Portugese(?) words. That's just my personal thing.

You shouldn't stress too much about this. Not like it makes this less fun.

What career would Evangeline's dad wanted for her?
>>
>>32630515
I do plan on continuing it after Evangeline gets out. Military school life is still school life, so it's a lot of routine, therefore there will be time-skips of months at points. I'm leaning toward past ending Schola Progenium Quest and starting off that next chapter of Evangeline's journey under a new quest with a different name. But that new quest would follow shortly after the end of SPQ, I already have many notes for it.
>>
>>32630398
I'd say we improve Willpower, but that's just me. I'm not a regular.
>>
>>32630574
so SPQ would be one 'episode' in a continued series following Eve? if so, cool
>>
>>32630542
It's actually supposed to be pseudo-Spanish seeing as High Gothic is also supposed to be a Romance language. Evangeline's usage of it will eventually die after being away from Alamos so long.

>>32630568
Evangeline's dad was grooming her for Imperial Guard command, albeit grudgingly since he wanted a son. Evangeline was heir presumptive to the House, that is to say, a male heir would've been preferred. A male heir was born, but Lord de Fuentes was fighting in the Clarent Crusade by that time.

>male heir was born, but Lord de Fuentes was fighting in the Clarent Crusade by that time.

Sooo... Evangeline got a little brother who's the heir?

Also, is there a correlation between stats/career paths, or...?
>>
>>32630664
There is a slight correlation, but actions more than stats will guide the path.

Yes, the little brother is now Fernand, Lord de Fuentes. The late Lady de Fuentes died giving birth to Fernand, and the late Ronaldo, Lord de Fuentes died in the line of duty, resulting in Evangeline being sent to the Progenium in accordance with the Charter Nobilis of Alamos Primus.

A problem is caused by Evangeline being in possession of the de Fuentes Blade of Succession that traditionally marks the true heir.
