Tad late, but that's what I get for sleeping in.

The automatic emergency announcement system says in a calm voice, "Brace for impact." The floor and walls of the subterranean base shudder with the bombardment, though from what you can't tell.

You are Corporal Daniel Churchill of the 105th ODST Division, known as the Helljumpers. After having just walked across the great plain between UNSC HIGHCOM and the city of Quezon on Reach, all you were looking forward to was some chow and a nap. Looks like the Covenant won't give you that chance.

You and Penny both stand up from your seats in the canteen, getting ready to make a break for wherever you need to be.
"What the hell is happening?" a marine shouts nearby.
"All personnel, proceed to emergency posts. Covenant attack in progress." With that, the gathered soldiers begin to scatter, moving towards their assigned mustering points.
"How the hell does that apply to us?" you ask Penny. "We're not part of any unit here."
"Let's just get to the Pelican and make sure it isn't turned to slag," she says.
"Alright, but let's go to the armoury first," you reply.

You follow the signs and the rush of marines to the armoury. Weapons of all kinds are in racks, along with ammo and special equipment. You grab an MA5 and mags and toss it to Penny. "You know how to use one of these?" you ask.
"I'm not the best, but it'll do."
A lieutenant stands in the doorway at that moment. "Marines! We've got a breach in the base defenses! Covenant are infiltrating the base through the landing pad! Prepare for close combat!"
Shit. You were reaching for a trusty DMR, your weapon of choice, but considering that, some of the other options might be better.

You grab yourself an MA5, thinking that it'll probably be more useful in the corridors of the base. You also grab yourself an extra frag to go with the one you still had remaining from the convoy ambush a few days ago.

"Landing pad?" Penny asks. "That's where my bird is parked, and where we need to go."
"Well," you reply. "Looks like we're going to have a lot of support in getting there. Seems like that's where everyone is heading."
"Hey, trooper!" the Lieutenant calls out. Is he calling for you? You look at him. "Yeah you! All the other shock troopers are on the other side of the base, defending the headquarters, what are you doing here?"
"Uh, sir?" you reply.
"Come on marine, get it together and get to where you need to be."

You and Penny walk up to the officer.
"A pilot too?" the Lieutenant asks. "What the hell are you two doing so far out of position?"
You take a closer look at his uniform. Lieutenant Amos, UNSC Army. No fucking wonder.
"Sorry Lieutenant, you're gonna have to talk to our boss, Commander MacKenzie in ONI. We've got other things to do."
The Army Lieutenant baulked at the mention of ONI, and didn't stop you as you walked past him into the corridors of the base. Somewhere in the distance you can hear roars and screams, as well as the echoes of gun and plasma fire. Same direction as the landing pad. You make sure Penny's and your own rifle are ready to fire, and then make your way down the corridors.

The walk isn't far, but you take it cautiously. Who knows how far the Covenant have intruded into the base. Some Marine and Army troopers accompany you to your objective. You let them lead, not wanting to be the first caught in an ambush. Meanwhile, the distant gunfire becomes incrementally less distant. You're beginning to hear some definition to the sounds you're hearing. The rattling of an MA5 sounds off, followed in quick succession by answering plasma fire.

And then you round the corner to the fight proper. You're in a subterranean roadway. There's two lanes going in either direction, wide enough for service vehicles to pass through unobstructed. The burnt out husk of one is ahead of you, with a dozen troopers taking cover behind it. An entire platoon's worth of soldiers are fighting in this corridor, and ahead of them are the Covies.

You tell Penny to stay back and sprint up to where a squad's worth of infantry are hiding in a nearby service alcove. "What's the situation?" you ask as you arrive.
"An ODST?" someone asks. "Aren't you meant to be guarding HQ?"
"Special deployment," you answer. "Don't ask and I won't have to tell you the answer." They shut up. "What's going on here?" you continue.

"We got Elite assault teams pinning us down in the main roadway," A sergeant explains. "We've sent teams to flank, but we've lost contact with them. They're probably dead. Reinforcements are supposed to be coming from around the base, but half of them don't show up. They've probably been intercepted in transit."
You remember this road. The landing pad is at the end of it. "The Covies are landing at the landing pad and attacking from there, right?" you ask.
"Yes, that's why it's so hard to keep them back, they get fresh reinforcements every few minutes."
Your goal is only a few hundred metres down this corridor.
Penny chimes in over the squad net. "If I can get to my bird, I can use the chin mounted chain gun to interdict their birds."
You look at the marine sergeant. "You hear her?" you ask. He nods.

>"I'll take a team and head down the flanks. You guys keep these guys from advancing any further. Penny, you're with me."

"Pass me that DMR," you say to the Marine next to you. "I'm a Marskman, I'll keep them pinned and hopefully pick a few of them off. You guys go down the flanks."
"Yes sir," say the sergeant. It's funny, but you don't think he realises that he outranks you. The rest of the soldiers all sprint down a side corridor. You prop your rifle up on a makeshift barricade of boxes and other detritus. This one is marked MRE. It'll do.

You link the DMR's scope to your inbuilt HUD. Through it you can see Elites and grunts taking cover, and behind them, some Jackals running up to reinforce. Oh no, you can't have that. If those Jackals get in front, the rest of the Covenant could then advance behind their plasma shields. You pick off three of the Jackals, and the other two dive out of the way. That should thin them out a bit.

You can't penetrate the energy shields of the big guys, so you concentrate on taking out the grunt cannon fodder. You kill a dozen of the little guys, though they soon get replaced by reinforcements. Every now and then, an elite and several grunts run out of cover to assault, but they soon get cut down by you and the other marines guarding the corridor.

Soon enough, the flanking team makes their attack, just as a wave of your own reinforcements arrive.

You're being useful right where you are, and with the enemy distracted by the flanking forces you can put a lot more fire down easily. The marines hiding behind the burnt out supply truck ahead of you see the Covies being assaulted, and stand up to charge themselves. The marine reinforcements take up the vacated position.

The marines and covenant mix in a mad melee. Screams and roars can be heard, even from way back here. Eventually, it becomes too hard to pick out friend from foe in the chaos, and you're forced to hold fire. The fights boils down, and you can see that the marines have won.
"Move up marines!" yells the sergeant from ahead. "Trooper, thanks for the fire support, we'll take back the landing pad yet.

With the main force of elites dead, it's easy to break through the remaining forces. Grunts flee before the ferocity of the human assault. You're right there with them, firing into the backs of fleeing aliens. A stray plasma bolt catches a marine nearby, and a corspman tends to him, but the assault is bloodless. Before you know it, you're at the entrance. You step out into the fading sunlight.

http://youtu.be/cuB4XfCLg2U

It's hard to miss the corvette hovering above the city. The bulbous mass hangs in the air, seemingly weightless. Fighters and dropships swarm around it, both human and covenant. A group of covenant drop ships break off and begin descending towards the base.
"Uh, Dan? I don't think my pelican can take that thing down."

The base air defense network is brought online, and the next few covenant assaults are repelled easily. The Army Lieutenant steps out from the base interior to the landing pad.
"Army, marine, navy, I don't care who you are, if you're here you're coming with me." The Lieutenant yells. A bunch of soldiers gather around him, with a few exceptions; mostly marines, like yourself. You stay by your pelican, listening from afar.
"Covenant have us jammed," begins the Lieutenant. "Our comms are cut off from the rest of the planet. We are still communicating with the rest of the city, however, and the situation is grim. Covenant are raiding all over the city, and they are massacring civilians. UNSC forces who are out there are spread thin, but with the liberation of this landing pad, we here at Base Quezon will be able to help them out. Hey trooper." The Lieutenant turns to you, followed shortly by everyone else. They can't see you flinch under your helmet.

"You think we could borrow you and your bird from whatever ONI special directive business you're on? We need every transport we can get."

"Can't let the city burn, Lieutenant," you reply.
"City's already burnin'," he says. "We've just gotta make sure it doesn't burn any worse."

It's half an hour before the assault is organised. Your pelican and a flight of falcons were to find the source of the jamming and take it down. Others would take care of pushing back the covenant assaults throughout the city.

You sit in the back of the pelican, along with fourteen other marines. Penny takes the bird just below the rooftop level, heading towards Traxus Tower, the possible location of a Covenant jammer. Penny wheels the bird around, the back end facing towards the rooftop.
"Move, move, move," says the marine sergeant from the landing pad assault. You follow the marines out, fanning out across the rooftop landing pad.
"You boys come back safe," Penny says as she leaves. "I'll be nearby to pick you up whenever you need it."
"You stay safe yourself," you send back. "Don't want our intrepid pilot to go down to something like ground fire."
"Roger that."

The stairway down from the rooftop is dark, only lit by the flashlights of Marines, and your own night vision. Smoke rises up from below, making visibility worse. Your team ignores the first few doors; the jammer is somewhere lower in the tower. You get to the door marked one-hundred and forty three, and the lead marine kicks it down. The shooting starts immediately.

The first marine takes a green plasma bolt straight to the chest, sending him backwards immediately. The momentum of the squad is too much to halt, and the rest of you push through the door way, heading straight for the nearest cover. You're through the door in a blur, and find yourself behind a burning vending machine with two privates. You look back towards the entry war. Two dead marines, and at least one wounded. That leaves you at thirteen men.

Covenant have you pinned down from their own barricades at the other side of the building. The room is an open plan office with the standard cubicles. You have some options available to you.

> Grenades, then assault. Beat them down with ferocity and firepower.
> Keep back and cover your men. You have the DMR, you have the range advantage.

You broadcast over the squad net. "Anyone got grenades here?" You're answered by a few affirmatives from the surrounding marines. "Sergeant, you get where I'm going with this?"
"I got it trooper," the sergeant replies. "On my mark, I want everyone with grenades to throw them. When they've gone off, everyone assaults."
Another volley of plasma strafes your position, and you return with a few shots of your own, killing a couple of grunts.
"Ready grenades!" yells the sergeant. You pull out one of your frags, and pull the pin, holding down the spoon. "Throw!" You throw your grenade, and watch satisfied as it flies behind the Covenant barricade. The cries of outrage and squeals of terror are cut off by the loudest collective grenade blast you've ever heard. "Charge!" the Sergeant yells, and with a collective cry that hasn't changed throughout millions of years of human evolution, you and the marines charge.

Another marine takes a hit from plasma, falling over with his head blasted apart. The rest of you continue on, leaping over covenant corpses and anything else between you and the enemy. With a final leap, you're behind the Covie barricades, and firing into their colourful mass. By the end, dead marines and Covenant alike litter the ground, but the ground is yours. You stand next to the sergeant, who looks winded. You still don't know his name.

"Let's get that jammer hooked up for detonation," he says. One of the marines respond, pulling out a det kit and crouching down, but halts.
"Sir?" he asks. "It's already got explosives on it."
Shit.

There's no time to say anything or even think, you just turn and grab the two people next to you and dive behind the Covenant's erected barrier. The sergeant already had that idea before you grabbed him, putting up no resistance as he dives backwards himself. The other marine is small, so you can easily bring him down too.

And then the whole side of the building explodes. The heat of plasma expands over you, and you can feel its intensity even through your armour, and the overpressure punches you in the gut. You aren't dead, though. Not that you can say so much for much of the remaining marines, as six HUD tags go red then wink out.

"Marine Jammer Hunting team, do you read?" you hear Penny say over the com. "This is Charlie two-six to marine force in Traxus Tower, can you hear me? Dan?"
You go to speak, but cough instead. You try again. "This is Corporal Churchill, I read you."
"Oh christ, you had me worried there. What happened?"
You roll off your fellow marines and sit up. "Covenant bastards had the jammer rigged to blow. Wiped out half the squad. Sergeant's unconscious, I think."
"Need a medevac?" Penny asks.
"Negative. Anyone caught in that isn't going to be wounded, they're going to be dead as hell." You get to your feet and survey the damage. An entire wall of the building is a scorched, blown out hole. Half of the office is on fire, and no one else is moving.
"Jammer destroyed," you send to Penny. "Make sure dispatch gets that. We'll give a casualty report once we get the survivors back onto the pelican."
"Roger that."

Behind you, the sergeant coughs. He sits up, and you unpolarise your helmet to talk to him.
"Hey, you alright? Anything broken?"
The sergeant coughs again. "The /fuck/ is wrong with these Covenant assholes?"
"Crazy religious genocidal aliens, sir. It's a fucked up concept from wherever you look at it."
"That'd be right," he says as he gets to his feet. "Ah fuck, the whole squad's dead, isn't it?"
"Seems to be. Just you, me, and this guy." You nudge the other marine you saved.
"Damn. I only met them today, but damn. Fuck these Covies."
You crouch down and roll over the unconscious marine. "And who's this lucky bastard?" you say as you haul him over.

He turns out to be a she, a young woman which your VISR tags as Private Erika Lund.
"Huh," you say. "I didn't even know we had any women on this op."
"These days, if you can hold a gun and run, you're welcome to join the fun."
You chuckle darkly. "Fun, huh?" you say, looking again at the scorched area left by the Covenant bomb.

>>
>>32626874
You finally learn the sergeant's name, in the back of the pelican. One Sergeant Maverick Jacobson, born on Luna and long veteran of the war.
"I suppose we better get back to UNSC Quezon, huh?" You say. "Report back to that army Lieutenant."
"That'd be right." He turns towards the cockpit. "Pilot, get dispatch on the line and start taking us back to base. We've gotta go report this shitstorm back at base."
"Roger that," Penny says from the front. It's only a minute before she gets back to you. "Uh, sir? I can't raise UNSC Quezon."
"What do you mean? We just took down the jammer."
"Jamming's dead," she says. "I just can't raise them. I've got other units calling for dispatch but they're not getting anything either. It's like they're not there to... receive it..." she trails off.
"That's not a good silence, Penny," you say. "What's going on?"
"Jesus Christ. Guys, you need to get up here and see this, ASAP."
You exchange a look with Jacobson, and then the two of you get up and head towards the cockpit.
There's smoke. A lot of smoke. You don't quite know what you're looking at.
"No..." the Sergeant says.
"What am I looking at here?" you ask. There's fire, and a burning crater filled with rubble. Did a building collapse?
"That's UNSC Quezon."
Oh. UNSC Quezon is gone.
