Your name is Micheal Hile. Crown Prince of the Central Human Empire. And you're feeling the pressure of the world on your shoulders. Your bodyguard is in another country, your nation is threatened by a conspiracy between the God of Law and the lord of all demons, and there is so little you can do and so few allies left that you can count them on both hands.

You have to find a priest of Law willing to summon him for the express purpose of killing him. You have to form some sort of massive circle around the city to contain and summon the Lord of Lords, either before or after your duel with father. You have to find a way to convince father either to cancel or delay that - or find a way to win without the possibility of killing him.

And if too many people learn what;s going on, then Law might learn that you know of his plan as well. That probably won't end well. You like to think you've grown into a fine man in the last year, but all this weighs on you like so much stone and iron duty.

You shudder at the consequences of your failure. The deaths of the beastkin, your friends, yourself, and possibly the end of all cultures but a mutated monster of your own.

>Let's talk to Ja'al. We need to work on that Circle!

You decide against drinking, and make your way to Karl's office, opening the door as you wipe your face of sweat.
"Hey, Karl, can we-"

You blink at the scene you've walked in on, with Karl shirtless on the bed and his girlfriend in a bright, bright pink dress that ends just below her hips, open at every button, exposing white lingerie. She's pressed against him, hands resting on his pectorals, and you all blink at one another, a moment frozen in time, before you slip back out.
There's a few moments of frenzied apologies, and then Karl lets you back in. He clears his throat before speaking again.
"At any rate, you look rather grim. What's eating you, Mike?"

You sit down, and start talking. You let it all out. Your doubt. Your fears. All of them, come out. You're worried about the kingdom, about Annelin, about not being able to perform in either duty, about your father, the duel, and then... The conspiracy.

It's all a long torrent, a flood of information, and Karl takes it all in.

"You sound exactly like your father." he says with a laugh. "Almost exactly. The fear was so strong in him when he took the throne and when he courted your mother. He actually thought he didn't deserve her - that he wasn't worth her time."

"...My father."

"Yes." Karl says. "He grew to accept it, to be confident, but it took years of bumbling, mistakes, and worry. The burden of rulership is dangerous and deep." he says softly, "'It's good to be King' is a joke, sarcasm." he says. "But... You're afraid for the right reasons. You're responsible." he places a hand on your shoulder. "I'll always be here. Trust in that."

"...I need your help. To kill Law."

Karl smiles.
"You realize that this is more of a gift than a request, right?" he asks.

"Yeah." You hand him the sword. "But who could summon him?"

"...That's a good question. We'll need to retrieve your grandfather. We've a week before things get too dire - but it's likely that Law will openly oppose us if possible."

You write a note regarding the Circle and set it into the magical delivery system, and stand while Karl prepares to depart. "He'll send his Angels to stop us. Once we move on this, there'll be no stopping the chain of events that follows. Is there any other preparations we should make?"

"Father?"

He rises a little, then gestures to the seat beside him.

I've made a big show of not giving up on this, and I admire what two or three or maybe even four anons are still following along. But it's growing clear to me that everyone here involved simply isn't enjoying it. I'm not, or my updates would be faster, meatier. You aren't, or there'd be more of you. I've not communicated with you meaningfully since halfway through this quest, and now is not a great time to start, but...

I really do like the setting I've made. I love the characters in it, and I love the relationships you all have built between them. But I want to know.

What do you want? Aside from an ending - what appeals to you? What would be fun for you? I want above all to have fun with you all, and to enjoy my time here. So I'm asking, what would you all like to see? Maybe this part of the plot is coming to a close, but that doesn't mean that it's the end of the setting, or even these characters. So, whoever's left, I ask you - what is it that you desire?
>>
>>32627709
I hope you at least pastebin an epilogue for everyone if you do decide to end things.
>>
>>32627709
I don't even know at this point, I feel like the demons are pretty interesting (though I don't get the point of the Undead, seeing as ALL demons are technically ghosts), the various critter species were nice, as were the gods... Really, as far as settings go, you've got a pretty good thing going, even if it can be pretty cliche on occasion.

I liked the downtime elements of the quest, which is strange because you seem to lose patience with that area pretty quickly.

Feels like I'll have to re-read the quest in order to really clarify what was good about it.
>>
>>32627709
The problem is that a bunch of people still feel like you made Annelin cease to be fun anymore, which I feel is debatable.

Less arguable is the way you decided to deal with that is trying to make Monica worse, what with maiming her, and right after it seemed like /tg/ was approximating a friendly romantic rivalry, she gets hooked up with the cat princess.
>>
>>32627709
>appeal
Crunch to chew on. Gods being old style selfish. Early characterization was strong in their presented roles.

>fun
I think we never got to know all the critters well. Except maybe the Tou. Hell, even the demon situation. Deckard being the mildest guy made him amenable in a world of HAPPENING.

>want
Stop the graveyard migraine shift, it is bad enough you're out of my timetable, but when my insomnia caught this thread, I felt bad for both of us.
>>
>>32627709
Man I don't know.

The thing is, you knew people weren't having as much fun with the quest as they were before, so you decide to start a fucking scavenger hunt throughout all the archives to pick up all the clues on how to beat the final boss?

Maybe it wasn't an outright awful idea, but just the timing of it was off.

Maybe it will all come together to be an entertaining picture, but I kind of liked it back when the plot was more in the background.
>>
>>32627766
That's planned, yes, if things go that way.

>>32627788
The planned future of the quest was to follow the format of the tgchan series - which basically followed each generation of the same family. I have a lot of reworking to do on Rune Magic if I'm to go that direction again.

>>32627846
Honestly, it was only after the fact, looking back, that I realize that Monica was a bit too rushed.

...Really, that's the problem with everything. Pacing. Too fast, too much, too little buildup. I don't know how to downtime, how to just have nothing happen and build shit up. I need to practice. I'm half a mind to write that epilogue now and just start with the next segment so I can try to.

>>32627882
I think I know where I'm heading more solidly...

The big question is this: With all the things set out for you, as they are, do you want to play it out, or have the ending occur and move on?
>>
>>32627907
My schedule tells me I most likely won't be able to play it out. I'm in red eye mode catching this by chance
>>
>>32627907
It doesn't really feel like there's much to play out.

Like I see the pieces fitting together, but it seems like the only interactive elements would be manually triggering each predetermined step, when it's meant to be an automated process.

...Though you do realize that the idea that Annelin's life is pretty much over after she gets hitched to Michael, and she just exists to pump out babies, is another thing that people don't really like the idea of, yes?
>>
>>32627969
Oh yes, this much is realized. But I don't plan on that, at all - she won't be who you control anymore, but neither will she be passive and quiet, either. She's got a big dress to fill if she's going to be the Queen of Central.

and it might have spikes and chainmail.

>>32627960
>>32627969
It seems to me at this point that I was pretty much correct in my assumptions. There were some rabbits to pull out of hats, but you guys seem to know the score anyway.

>>32627709
I honestly loved it when we were playing as Annelin just going about the day to day business of guarding and training the prince, and I feel things took a turn for the worse when shit hit the fan and conspiracies started getting thrown around, I'd like to see more of that, more of the individual character interactions and fun they get into on a personal level, with less impending doom and gloom hovering over everything

also, when do we get to play as Annelin again?
>>
>>32627907
>The big question is this: With all the things set out for you, as they are, do you want to play it out, or have the ending occur and move on?
I definitely want to play it out and see Mike and Annelin to a happy conclusion of this story, I'd like to see more of them without the world about to end overriding everything
>>
>>32628027
>Tell you all what - I'll get some zs under me, and let you discuss things here to keep the thread alive. When I wake up, I'll determine how things go from there.
Don't end it and dump the epilogue now, when its evident its close, that just feels like a cop out, a cheap move to get rid of this and move on, when you've made it clear you want to see this quest through to the ending it deserves.
>>
>>32628254
I don't think that's an option anymore.

Hell, the final sequence itself will barely involve Annelin, I wouldn't be surprised if it's meant to be mostly over by the time she finally returns to the country.

Like we won't be fighting Law, and the LoL is apparently a wuss. All that's left are mooks.
>>
>>32628027
>she won't be who you control anymore
...

She was my favorite aspect of this quest, and honestly, the quest feels a lot less enjoyable since we left Annelin behind to go archive diving with Mike, he just ain't the MC of this quest and if thats the end of us playing Annelin, thats pretty fucking pathetic.

Let us player our character for fucks sake.

You say you want to see this through, so let us see it fucking through instead of flip flopping and going bipolar and talking like your going to kill this every 2 threads.

I don't care how long it takes, I'm here for the ride in its entirety and I want to play it out with out MC alongside Mike, otherwise you may as well have just ended the quest the moment we took control of Mike and called it something new.

Annelin is the MC we first saw, first got to know, first controlled and first interacted with this setting and these characters with, we developed relationships through Annelin, with Mike and all her new friends, and it just feels wrong to not see it through to the end that way.
>>
>>32628323
Eh, it just shows how as the quest went on, Annelin faded away more and more until she became nothing more than Michael's waifu.

Horrifying really.
>>
>>32628323
Ah, I misphrased that.

Once I finish things up with this, and indeed see it through, then you'd play as someone else. Annelin is important in the final resolution - in what way I cannot say, however. Just understand that it's in her usual role.

Now for real sleep. Thanks for being so open with me.
>>
>>32628361
Right then, thanks for clearing that up, you had me worried.
>>
>>32628335
I'm honestly not seeing how she faded at all in any way, her role is exactly the same, if anything, its more crucial and meaningful than ever, the only thing I can see being interpreted as her fading away was her and Monica being sent away for no good reason
>>
>>32628383
She's fading away because she's becoming more and more defined by her attraction to Michael, to the point where Michael becomes the PC.

And her and Monica being sent away so Michael's hormones can cool down and he can make a proper decision was actually a good idea.

It's just the execution was a letdown.
>>
>>32628420
>to the point where Michael becomes the PC.
that is not how things work anon...
>>
>>32628420
>She's fading away because she's becoming more and more defined by her attraction to Michael, to the point where Michael becomes the PC.
Only because we've not played as her for a long ass time, she has barely been defined by her relationship with Mike at all, if anything, he's become more defined and refined because of her, not the other way around.

Also, a character being defined and developed in relation to relationships does not detract from their meta 'wholeness' as a character and transfer player control to another character.

That's called character development anon...
>>

"There's some things that have come to light that you need to know." you say, your words coming out more confidently than you expected. "Things about Law, and demons."

You launch into an explanation about what Law has planned, about what you've learned. What needs to happen. He sits stoically, watching the fire, not you, as you speak.

"I don't want to avoid the duel." you say quietly, as he rises, walking to a bookcase and opening a binder, fingers tracing a page. "But this is..."

"An emergency." he finishes for you, flicking a glowing stick at you. You catch it - a Summoning Yard.

"...I didn't think they made these anymore." you manage.

"Yes, well, I figured things would never really go as planned for you." he grumbles. "So I asked a helpful friend of a feather to do what he could. Works on a similar principle to the ring, but only once. It's keyed to her."

"You mean-"

"I'm letting up my decision in light of this news. Given how you've acted and what you've confided, I know that your decision is not based loosely on similarities to your mother."

"...Do you know why..."

"She was an oracle. A real one. We told no one, but it seems that they discovered it anyway." he waves his hand. "Go fetch your grandfather - the duel moves forward as expected. We cannot afford to be more open than we already are. But more protection cannot hurt. Just remember that time is of the essence."

You nod, heading to your room to pack. The stick lays on your bed where you've placed it...

>Break it now, summoning Annelin, to better... appraise her of the situation.

You take up the stick and snap it in your hand, casting the pieces away.

The gap between them shears at reality - and for a moment, you see the Hells. A yawning, massive plate in an abyss of nothing, fraught with war and combat and hate - and through this gap, Annelin falls, into your arms. More accurately, she pushes you down with the impact of her landing.

She's dressed differently than usual - deep black armor plates scribed with silver, her mechanical arm more slender and slightly skeletal, a skull-like face on its back with burning blue fires in the sockets like baleful candles. The Way closes, leaving her blinking, seated neatly atop you, a reassuring weight. Her spear is almost immediately cast aside, her shield, which is also new to you, bearing the symbol of a raven in flight from profile, set to the other.

>Goddamnit, screw time, screw emergency. Kiss her.

You are Annelin Karkinos, Bloodline Protector, Champion of Raev, and more than a little confused. You had only just struck down the Rakshasa Sultanate, when the floor suddenly ceased to exist and you fell onto Micheal in his room. You had been promised jewels, magical items, riches and dresses. Alliances with Central had been forged from blood and soul.

But suddenly...

Suddenly you don't care. Your fingers sliding through that soft golden hair is more pleasant than a thousand pieces of glittering gold. The feeling of his lips on yours, soft yet pressing, is worth more than a thousand magical blades. His weight against you feels like more protection against the cold, cruel world than any Tou could ever offer. And it feels like it lasts forever, until finally, he pulls away, pressing his head against your neck and shoulder.

He explains the situation. At first, you're confused, then angry. Wildly angry. Everyone's hands, tied, everyone who's supposed to protect you, wringing their hands and muttering, "well, what can be done?" and you - all of you are stuck with it.

"So I'm going to see my grandfather." he finishes, "While Ja'al stays here to construct the Great Circle. Karl was going to come with me, to help protect me. But..." he raises his hands. "With you around... It's up to you where you apply yourself. There could be interference anywhere."

"Fantastic." he says with a nod, rising as he picks up his weapons. He's more smooth in motion now, a little taller, a little stronger. You swear you felt more muscle on him than before. You'd left him almost a boy. You've returned to a man. A young man, but... A man.

/Eheheh. You like whatcha see./ Yorick quips, and you swat the back of your hand. The fire he creates and controls is powerful, and malleable as putty, but he's a pain to deal with unless you make an effort to silence him.

Still... You'll be traveling with him on the open road for almost a whole day. You bite your lip, then shake your head and help him prepare.

"Anyway, you should go see Karl about your ring before we head out."

/Not very hard, I expect. heheheheheh./ "Anyway, I should get going."

You board the carriage with Micheal, who shifts a little in his seat nervously. Ah.

You're really alone now, as the carriage moves. For the better part of a day.

You sidle up to him with a gentle smile. Granted, half-plate makes it hard to actually cuddle, but you'd massively prefer to be safe rather than soft. You rest a hand on his knee and he smiles at you.

"So... How's training been going?" you ask. He grins.

"I'm stronger, now. Much stronger. I feel... Denser. Both lighter and heavier, it's hard to explain. More mass?" he frowns. "In any case, I've put a lot of muscle on in a short period of time."

Curiously, you remove a gauntlet and touch his chest. Woah. It's so firm, strong, solid. So different than before. You roll out of the city, and his eyes meet yours.

You grin and kiss his neck, and he gasps. Yep - he's still somewhat innocent, at least, even if he's no longer a boy. The softness of his skin, the sweetness as he struggles to say something, anything, makes you feel vindicated as you move to his earlobe, gently nibbling at it and licking along it. It's a good feeling, to be so deeply in control of him. Still...

Your heart races as you tug off his shirt and kiss at his lips, hands pressing against his chest. He's strong - stronger than you left him, stronger than you expected. You press yourself against him as you hungrily take his lips and tongue, one hand sliding up to slide through his soft hair. You barely understood how much you wanted this, how much you yearned for it, for him, to know he was safe in your arms, to feel safer in his.

"A-annelin." Micheal manages, panting. "Not that... Not that I don't enjoy this... I really do. I just..." he looks out the window. "I just don't think now is the time." he says, distracted. "S-sorry."

He's nervous. Anxious. You can feel it in his movements and see it in his eyes. About something more than just the world.

He nods, taking his shirt and sliding back into it. He still doesn't meet your eyes as the carriage trundles on.

Which is about when you notice the half he's sitting on steadily move away from you. Micheal reacts before you do, leaping to your side and slamming his shoulder into the wall to push it over. Then he severs the horse from the cart, letting it flee as he stares up.

"..." The silence is audible as the angel lowers from the heavens, massive wings beating silently. "It would seem that you are prepared to deny Him." the angel states softly. "A shame, but there can be no pretenders upon the throne."

You rise, leaping between Micheal and the angel.

/Yorick, any knowledge of fighting angels?/

/Luck means nothing./ Yorick states, /Only cold tactics./

"You, Annelin. You'll have to die first." he says. "Stand and face judgement, mortal!"

More wings burst from his back as he launches forth.

Just a general comment. Annelin's statistics are Body 20, Magic 20, Mind 30. While mind might not always be the best option here, it's probably one of the best for those just joining.

The Angel launches forth, swinging a beautiful sword. The world is still, the air, untouched by currents. A golden silence as you step on soil that does not slip, raising a shield with a perfectly even distribution of structural integrity.

The blade glances off, and you thrust with your weapon, watching him slip away. What follows is a brief exchange, attacking, blocking, slamming, dodging, where neither of you make any ground. The Angel is relentless, swift, and without mercy. You think you see an opening form, though you aren't certain if it's intentional or not - his wings seem to prevent him full motion of his arms, and so the long, thin shield he parries with doesn't extend far enough to fully protect his hip.

You think.

You hunker down and wait for the blow, then push away the blow - only for a wing to slam into your face, followed by another.
"You're a fool." he rumbles. "You oppose the Law of the world itself. Immutable. Unchangable. Unstoppable."

"Then stop this!" Micheal roars, leaping onto its back with twin blades. Gouts of blood, shining gold, spray forth to coat Micheal's face as he claps his hands on the angel's face.
"/Fuego/, you feathered fucker." you hear him growl, and an explosion rips apart the angel's head, making it careen at you and swing blindly. You parry with ease, though the blows have lost no energy. It's not dead, just blinded.

We probably made the wrong strategic choice again. The kind that gets us killed.

You leap at the Angel, and it raises its blade to meet you. Yorick laughs as his fire lances out like a whip, shearing off the blade as you drive your spear in deep. When you land, you lift him up, and...

You've done this trick three times now.

You Break him.

Something in his core shatters, and the entire body goes limp on your spear. You toss the body aside, looking up at the retreat where Micheal's grandfather awaits.

It's burning, but it's close. You can see demons moving in the shadows and smoke, undead, mostly - zombies that move quickly, with heavy armor.

/Ha! Weaklings and fuel. Let's go./

You run up the steps, dispatching one demon after another. You catch one of the soulstones in your mechanical hand and feed it to Yorick, since it's an Undead, and his Fire blazes as you move.

"Micheal!" you call over your shoulder. "Where is-"

A demon sails by, an old man having thrown it with ease.
"My. Bingo day is busy today." he comments happily, slipping away from the hands of another rotting creature. "Ah! Annelin! You look wonderful as always!" he calls, sliding around a series of attacks. "And here I thought I might try to do some forms in the courtyard. These visitors are none too polite!"

"No, he tossed himself. I only showed him where to go." the old man says with a grin.

"...Your house is burning."

"So it is. So it is. An edifice of wood and paper. It matters little. What's important is already gone." he walks towards you, "Or right here." he adds, casually backhanding a zombie in the torso, forcing it to double slightly. He then uppercuts it with a smooth, practiced motion, beheading it. "Now, then. I'm assuming that this assault upon my home means that I have been blessed with importance. Care to tell me why?"

"And mine is Orsea Ducal." he chuckles. "But Tarren is the blackest-hearted son of a bitch I've ever met. That I'm connected to him - at all - is a mark of shame."

"Grandfather..." Micheal begins, but he holds up a hand.

"I know what you need me for. That blackheart will be using Law's might to return here - So you want to address him. Personally. Probably with a sword. Presumably you've a way to harm him, at the palace."

Avalon, one of the things that keeps quests going in between metaplot is slice of life. It's basically time for the players to interact as people, not heroes, with the world and those around them.

Try to make sure there's an evenish slice of either, allowing players to get a bit more if they want, while dropping them a line if they're going out on their own and one of the metaplot/slice-of-life things they've agreed are things they want to do has been un-done for a while. Beyond that, keep going with what you're doing. You're doing well as a QM by asking and listening to criticism.
>>
>>32646250
"Sure, or at least I will after you hear what Law did to your daughter."
>>
>>32646658
Like getting her killed wasn't bad enough, but consigning her soul to the Beast Realm, so she would no longer be sapient enough to communicate what she's seen?

That's all kinds of fucked up.
>>
Of course, if we do kill him, his soulstone generation will level the city.
>>
"Of course I trust you."

He smiles his little smile.
"One of the greatest forces you can muster is your enemy's, redirected. I learned that a long time ago. So I think... Yes. It's time for one more solid throw. One more... misdirection."

To address this, I thought I'd let you all in on a little secret for being so cooperative - the next in the Avalon series will focus on magic from a caster's perspective, one who uses Runes.

Runes are many in form and number, but most who use them learn up to at most three, as one must be 'close' to a rune to use it - a blacksmith, for example, would almost always know Heat and Smiting.

Most importantly, Runes can be traced on any object, and affect different objects differently - a Mace of Smiting will deliver a terrible blow indeed, but armor of Smiting might be more useful to deflect blunt weapons, and god only knows what a bottle of water inscribed with it would do!

The focus would be on learning about Runes, attending the Central academy, and teenage/early adulthood antics.

Sound fun?
