"Nngh..."

As I turn over in my bed, the first thing that I comes to mind is just how much my head hurts. And then I remember that weird dream I just had, and-

Wait, dream? When did I even go to sleep?

...oh yeah, I must have passed out while reading that weird book that Mina had sent here. I hope I wasn't out for too long. And I fell asleep with my glasses on. Crap.

Looking over the clock on my nightstand, I can just barely make out the display... 6:20. Huh, that's not too-

"Ow ow ow ow ow!!!" I scream as I shield my face. It's like someone took a freaking laser pointer and shone it right into my eyes, what the hell?

Taking care to take off my glasses and keep my hand covering my eyes, I sit up in my bed and wait for my eyes to adjust.

Too bright.

Still too bright.

A little better.

There we go.

Fifteen minutes for my eyes to get to the point where I can open them without horrible pain... I haven't felt like this since I got my pupils dilated at the eye doctor's last year. I really hope that there's nothing wrong with my eyesight now, it's already horrible to begin with.

>[1/2]
>>
>>32621742
Heh, I remember my first hangover.
>>
>>32621736
No? Why would you think that?
>>
>>32621742
>[2/2]

After sitting with my eyes closed for a few more minutes just in case they haven't fully adjusted, I put my glasses back on and look around my room. Yeah, I fell asleep while reading. My bed's still (mostly) made, and that stupid book's lying there.

Just looking at it makes my head hurt.

Then I glance out the window, and it hits me. It's not 6:40 -PM-, it's 6:40 -AM-. I slept the entire freaking day away! But at least I got up early today, so I might as well take advantage of it and have a proper breakfast. I should make something for lunch too, come to think of it.

Leaving my room for the first time in like fourteen hours, I head straight for the kitchen. Along the way, I can hear that the TV's on... is Allison already up?

...knowing her, there's a decent chance that she's actually just now coming back home. But in any event, it's nice to be able to say hi to her before I leave for school.

And so, I enter the kitchen and wave hi to-

"Oh, hey," a voice calls out to me. "You're up early."

.............................................................

There is a MAN. Sitting at my kitchen table.

he's not wearing a shirt what the hell is this oh my god

A man is in my house. A shirtless man is in my house. Why is there

Calm down, Cecile. There has to be a good reason for this, I mean OH NO HE'S GETTING UP FROM THE TABLE

Back away. Don't freak out, just back away. Daddy said that losing your cool in bad situations only leads to things getting worse.

step

step

I'm slowly walking backwards, edging away from this topless man and his Gold's Gym platinum member muscles... and I bump into something soft.

"Cecile?" I turn around to see what I bumped into, and it's Allison.

And something just snaps.

"ALLISON ALLISON THERE'S A RAPIST IN THE HOUSE C'MON LET'S GO BEFORE HE CAN GET US CALL THE COOOOOOOOPS!!!!"

>[1/?]
>>
>>32622613

I suspect the book may still be intact to give us a cryptic guide to whatever spooky powers we're going to get. It may not activate magical powers in anyone else now, or else it may only trigger them in certain individuals to begin with.

That said, if this is going to be Magical Girl/Teen Witch quest I will be sorely disappointed if our friendship circle doesn't turn into a super team through various means.

"Dammit, this is my own fault," Allison says as she pulls me into a hug. "This is Kevin, the guy I was talking about yesterday morning. Remember?"

...huh? So he's not a-

"So he didn't break in?" I ask.
"Much like the vampires of old, I can only enter when given permission," Kevin says with a creepy laugh. I know that he's trying to be charming or something, but it's just creepy. "Sorry to scare you like that, though."
"His car broke down in front of our house to days ago while you were in school, and I helped him out... we xchanged numbers after that, and we ended up hitting it off!" Allison says happily.

And then she invited him into our house for... ugh, Allison can be such a slut.

"Just give me some money to get something on the way to school and I'll be out of your hair."

"At five in the morning, police were called to handle a disturbance out in a nearby suburb of our fair city," reporter says. "The caller, a local auto enthusiast, was awakened by the sounds of growling and glass breaking coming from his driveway. When he went to investigate, he was met with this sight."

The camera then cuts to a blue hotrod... or what's left of it, anyways. I don't really care about cars, but even I feel kind of hurt to see what was clearly a fancy car mangled that badly.

"Every window of the victim's custom-fitted Dodge Viper was shattered, and there was a massive amount of damage done to the car's frame as well," the reporter says. "No weapon was found, however, though the police have said that they found traces of animal fur on the remains of the car... we at Channel Eight will be sure to alert you to further leads in this case."

Greek gods did that.
He should've given her the gift of "Being cool with being fucked by Apollo" instead.
>>

Since I have plenty of time to spare today, I decide to swing by the park before getting something to eat. I can stop by a fast food place on the way out, I guess... shouldn't be a problem as long as I don't take too long over there. Or end up passing out from hunger.

But it's not like I have low blood sugar or anything. Besides, being super hungry will only serve to make my food taste even better when I finally do get something to eat.

So yeah, to the park I go. Maybe being able to check out the garden there will take my mind off of Allison's sexual escapades. Just thinking about that is making my headache worse.

I can't help but squint most of the way there... I dunno, it's like my eyes are more sensitive today or something. Stupid bright sun. I make it to the park just fine though, and to the garden from there. Unfortunately, I don't see the lady from yesterday anywhere around.

Kind of sucks, I wanted to ask her how the cat's doing. I hope it's okay.

Anyways, it's time to focus in the main reason I even come here- the flowers! Our garden back home used to be really pretty back when our parents lived with us... but I'm nowhere as good at growing stuff as Mom is.

They switch out the flowers here depending on the season, most of the ones here bloom in early and mid-spring.

huh? Did those always look so... weird?

Ugh, I think my eyes really are messed up or something.

"Just try it," she says, cracking her knuckles as she assumes some kind of fighting stance. "Bite me and I'll bite you right back."

...and then the dog whimpers and backs away a few steps before booking it out of the park entirely. What the hell, she actually intimidated it!?

"Thank God that was able to get to you in time," the girl says with a tired laugh. "I was over by the entrance when I saw it starting to approach you, and I raced here as fast as I could."

"Huh?" she stares at me. "I actually JUST got back from eating, but I've never been one to pass up free food!" she says with a toothy grin.

It may not be any real compensation for saving my life, but at least now I'm able to do something to thank her.

All that stuff that Irene was talking about before with the branches and stuff... it kind of reminds me of that messed-up dream I had last night. Since school's starting not too long from now and I don't think that we'll really be able to leisurely talk about this stuff over breakfast, I might as well ask her about it now.

"So... Irene, was it?" I turn to her as we walk.
"Yup, that's my name!" she replies cheerfully. "...come to think of it, I don't think I got yours.
"Oh- I'm Cecile," I reply.
"That's a really cute name!"
"Yeah, I get that a lot..."

I'm not cute at all but I'm stuck with a cute name... it always gives people the wrong impression.

"Oh yeah, you didn't know..." Irene nods. "I guess yours just sprouted..."
"Sprouted?"
"Yeah. Back when you looked in my eyes, that headache you felt was a Synapse. It's how you can recognize people like us," she says. "Ours needed direct eye contact since I guess you're still new, but normally the distance needed varies depending on the person's Branch."
"Uh..."
"Mine's location range is embarrassingly small," she sighs. "Only about five yards or so. But there are others who can do so from half a mile away."

So I'll be able to recognize people who are... I still don't understand this.

"I still don't get what you meant by 'people like us' though," I say.

Our power is to change eye color?. Now THAT would be interesting. Though i doubt it since we can also see UV
>>
So Irene is claiming that what, I have superpowers? That superpowers exist in the first place? I mean, even if there was that weirdness last night and my eyes hurting and-

"My eyes," I say. "They were hurting when I woke up today, and when I was looking at those flowers just before that dog attacked me, everything looked, umm.... wrong?"
"Huh," Irene says, leaning in close to me to look into my eyes.

Way too close.

"Is that the only major change that you've noticed?" Irene asks. "Because your eyes... there's a ton of things that that could entail."
"Uh, no," I shake my head. "That's all that I've noticed."
"Hm... must still be developing then," she says, scratching her head. "Well you've got my number there, so feel free to call me if something changes!"

>[1/?]
>>
>>32628637

So I have the magic power of... weird eyes that make flowers look wrong. Great.

"Yeah, sure," I sigh. "So what's your power supposed to be? Kicking stuff?"

I'm still really skeptical about all of this, it sounds like something out of one of Mina's lame stories or something.

"Mine isn't really anything impressive," Irene shrugs. "And it's only useful part of the time..."
"So what is it?" I ask.
"The official name for it is 'Dragon's Tooth.'"

...so they name these alleged powers?

"There's a few parts to it, but the main draw is these," she says, pointing to her teeth. Admittedly, they ARE sharper than most people's. "I can eat anything without getting sick."
"Really."

I'm starting to think that I've been swindled here.

"Hey, it's actually useful in a pinch," Irene says, nudging me with her elbow. "But yeah, it is kind of lame compared to pretty much everything else," she sighs.

>[2/?]
>>
>>32628739
>[3/3[

How fitting, she declares that she's able to eat anything just as we get to the restaurant. But even if everything that she mentioned does turn out to be total bull, she DID still save my life so I'm still gonna treat her to breakfast.

Or rather, second breakfast in her case.

I get some hotcakes for now and a chicken biscuit for later, and Irene gets a bagel with steak, eggs and cheese... it doesn't exactly look like the most appetizing thing to me, but hey. I'm not the one who has to eat it.

With our ordering done, we sit down at a table and start eating.

"So these Branches or whatever," I say in between bites of my food, "where are they supposed to come from?"
"A lot of places," Irene replies. "There's a Branch called 'Gardener' that lets the user implant other people with seeds at will... thankfully, it's extremely rare," she sighs. "That's actually how I happened."
"Oh?"
"Yup," she nods. "That bitch caused way more problems than she solved."

The angry look in her eyes is definitely genuine.

"Aside from that, some people are jut born with it," Irene explains. "It's just a trait that activates in certain people on their own, and bam! I'm assuming that you fall into that group, since you didn't actually know about this stuff prior to meeting me," she says as she chomps into her bagel.

>[1/?]
>>
>>32629035
Can seeds be transferred via books?

Just curious.
>>
>>32629035
>[2/2]

"The last type involves a certain book..." Irene's expression suddenly becomes serious. "That's actually the entire reason why I'm even here, the folks who I work for learned that there's a high change of one being in this city."

Waaait.

"The book imparts the seed of the tree of knowledge..." Irene says, closing her eyes as if she was reciting a line that she heard somewhere. "I'm sure that you can understand how dangerous something like that could be if it actually managed to circulate amongst the folks who live here. Not to mention certain other sensitive matters..."
"Uh, yeah," I nod.

I read that book and passed out. And when I woke up, my eyes were doing weird stuff and I've had a weird headache ever since and now Irene's saying that there's a book that gives you magic powers and that book is in my backpack what the heck!?

Calm down, me. Even if Irene isn't completely insane and everything that she's saying is true, this book belongs to Mina. She spent $175 on it, and I'm sure that she'd freaking kill me if I up and gave it away to someone who I just met.

Yeah, I should just play dumb. Keep it to myself.

"If you happen to stumble across that book, be sure to give me a call," Irene says as she finishes DEVOURING the rest of her bagel sandwich thing in a single bite.
"Y... yeah, no problem," I reply, doing my best not to feel guilty about lying to her face.

Though she's done eating, Irene wits for me to finish eating my own food, and the two of us leave the restaurant together.

"You have school now, so I guess you ought to get going before you're late," Irene says.
"Yeah," I sigh. "I slept in and missed half the day yesterday, so..."
"Heh, that sounds rough."

It was REALLY rough.

"But before you go..." Irene leans in and rests her hand on my shoulder. She looks really really serious, and, umm...

Kiss de girl!
>>
>>32629352

"If things..." Irene looks me right in the eyes, "if they get weird... like if you're feeling uncomfortable in any way or start seeing more strange things or hearing voices or any of that, call me right away."
"Eh?" I freeze up for a second. "S- sure..."
"I don't want to scare you or anything, but for someone who's just developing, there are certain risks..."

Wait, risks? WHAT risks!?

"D- don't look so scared, it's probably nothing," she says with a weak smile. "But just in case, you know?"
"S... sure..." I mumble.

Great, now I'm scared that I'll end up turning into a monster or getting possessed by Cthulhu or something.

"But like I said, you probably don't have anything to worry about," Irene says, slapping me on the back.
"I certainly hope not," I reply.

With a long sigh, Irene steps away from me and slaps herself on the cheeks a few times before showing me a warm smile.

"Thanks for the free meal!" Irene says, bowing to me.

And before things can get any more awkward the two of us finally part ways.

Through the entire walk to school, my thoughts are filled with worry and regret and guilt and ugh! I- I mean, it's not like I'm sure that I even believe Irene's story to begin with, I don't have any reason to feel bad!

Internal turmoil doesn't seem to interfere with my walking speed though, as I make it to school about twenty minutes before classes start.

I don't really feel like going straight to homeroom right now... might as well go and see if Mina's gotten here yet, maybe I can get rid of this book.

The first place I check is down by the locker area, since that's where most of the students are at this time of day... and she's nowhere to be seen. Great. Might as well check the library next...

...huh, Theresa got her early.

Huh. So is that just the name of a branch, or does this thing sit at the root of the entire tree? Because I can see why that juicing people up left right and center might be risky.

While we do really owe this thing to Mina, we should probably get it locked down sooner rather than later. We just need to be careful that we can definitely trust Irene and her group before we just fork it over.

>>32629689

"Dammit..." I mumble under my breath as I rub my aching head. In addition to a headache, now I have actual exterior soreness on top of that from where my skull hit the floor. Double headache.

The first thing that I notice when I come to ihat the world is completely blurry.

"My glasses," I say, squinting as I look around for where the hell they might be- oh, they're on this table.

I then put them on, and finally realize where it is that I woke up. I'm sitting upright on one of the beds of the nurse's house, and Theresa's lying on the bed next to me... someone must have carried both of us here after that incident at the lockers.

"Oh, you're finally awake," the nurse says as she walks up to me and places her hand on my forehead. "Are you feeling well? You and your friend here fainted in a pile, and two of the janitors brought you here.
"Oh," I mumble. "Yeah, I'm fine... how long was I out?"
"About a half-hour," she replies. "We're about a quarter of the way through first period, but you can feel free to stay here and rest until you're feeling well enough to walk around again.

As I thank the nurse for her concern, Theresa starts to rustle around in the bed next to me.

"M'head..." Theresa mumbles as she places her hand on her forehead. "Hurts so much..."

After Theresa fully regains consciousness, the nurse gives her the same deal as with me, telling her that she can stick around for as long as she needs. And then the phone starts ringing.

"Yes, I understand," the nurse says. "What, right now? But I have two- yes, they're both awake, but-" she sighs. "Very well."
"Uh, is something wrong?" I ask, concerned about whatever's going on on the other end of that phonecall.
"I'm going to have to step out for a while," the nurse replies. "I'll be back in about an hour, but if you feel like leaving before then, that's just fine..."
"Alright, thanks," I nod.
"Y... yeah..." Theresa says before letting her head plop back down on her pillow.

And now we're alone.

It'll be interesting to see how things between Mina and Theresa kick off once everyone gets this branch thing. Mina won't be able to just ignore her any more. We should be in a slightly better position if there's a bloc of us to support one another when we start figuring all this out. We'll just need to play relationship counselor with the other two, maybe figure out what pissed Mina off so bad.
