> Where there is Light, shadows lurk and fear reigns.
> Yet by the blade of Knights, Mankind was given Hope.

- Fragment, anonymous.

------------------------------------------------

You are the KNIGHT, Master of Arms. In our last chapter, you thwarted the return of an ancient and powerful Horror, by destroying the Gate from which it planned to emerge -

...Until your victory was cut short, by a scream from the dark.

The air shivers, as the echoes of the scream hang in the air, like a curse - A woman's scream, high and pained, cut off with a wincing suddeness like the hinges of a trap slamming shut.

In your gauntlets, your great halberd's blade glows white-hot, the weapon purring in your hands as it cools; Chunks of greasy pink marble strewn underfoot, crunching apart with each step you take - Spraying shards across the ground.

Your mission is complete. You've sent the Horror screaming back to Hell...

-But no-one told you that there would be a second one. You can *feel* it, as naturally as hatred - A hard point of something vile, something unclean, prickling hot like a lethal radiation leak.

It pollutes the world just by standing in it.

Black smoke bleeds around you, wisping away into tatters of vapour; Each step solid, weighty, your armour gleaming in the dark as the runes of protection burn white-hot, shedding their blazing radiance.

CONDITION: Lightly Wounded

Your steps echo through the hollow structure - Through the half-complete building, through a gloom that is nowhere as oppressive as before. The first rays of silver moonlight shaft through the chambers, motes of dust shimmering in the air; You move between moments, guided by senses without name.

It's a thing that becomes second-nature, a sixth sense: A *wrongness* that makes your nerves prickle, that makes the eyes of your armour flare with renewed light.

It's close, now. You can feel the ebb and swell of energies, back and forth - A hazy, numinous glow, distant flickers of light flaring and flashing...

And weakening.

The *roar* splits the air, your pace redoubling at the hungry, grinding sound; It's a metal-on-metal clash, brassy and soulless, rising to a howl. The ground judders beneath you, as you surge out into the chamber beyond...

-To be confronted by a surreal tableau, a scene lit by the stark, bewitching glow of the moon.

The first thing you see - The very first thing - is the Horror; A hunched-back, razor-taloned ogre of girders and metal, three times your size. Rust-corrupted mechanisms growl as it moves, tangled power cords tightening brutally; Each motion forcing unoiled joints and unnatural ossified growth to grind against each other, spurring it into rasping motion.

It's shrouded in stinking serpents of purple-blue smoke, venting from the fractured, rusted shape's back in constant plumes; It smells like burning bone, like boiling blood. The Horror, raging, has formed a body for itself from the industrial desolation on all directions - Unnatural flesh armouring the steel bones, clumps of muscle and veins and arteries forming with moist alarcity on the black, hulking bulk, wet edges sucking at the air-

And before it - There's a girl. A woman. She's stunning, breathtaking - Violet eyes, hair like spun silver, framing lovely features taut with pain; Her lips set in a thin line, crimson showing against the white silk of her dress - A startling contrast to pleated folds that fall in waves to the ground - as the point of her spear skids against the ground, fighting to brace herself-

Her leg, the leg that's given way beneath her, that can no longer hold her weight is mangled and twisted. In that frozen moment, you make the connection between the gun barrels that slurp from the Horrors elbows and shoulders - The coils of vapour that twist up from the still-forming weapons as they *ratchet*, loading rivets and impaling nails-

A gasp, from close by -

"Mistral-"

Daggers of light blaze through the air. Arrows, spears - They strike the Horror from the side, and it lurches, it's very substance boiling. There's a rush of air, dust flurrying through the benighted chamber as-

There's another girl, in white. She moves with a dancer's poised grace, a princess from a fairytale; With *wings*, great pinions of light that shed a humming radiance, all the light of the moon gathering at her bow, as she unleashes another volley-

Time seems to slow. Mistral's eyes, wide and pained, lock onto you; A wordless, taut sound pulses from the other's lips, her wings beating time, bearing her aloft - For a moment, both girls are alike in their utter and unalloyed confusion, at your presence.

You can almost hear their shared thought:

> Whose side is he on?

Don't waste time and immediately attack the Horror. If possible, move in from behind and decapitate its legs.

The won't attack us if they see us attacking the enemy first.
It's also pointless to worry about such details when one of the is too injured to fight anymore.
We should the very least immobilize the Horror long enough for hem to get headshot.

Fear not.

It's strange, speaking in your armour. A Knight's voice should be brassy, commanding, meant for bellowing orders and defiance - But not for you. Your voice is achingly and surprisingly human, unfiltered by the soul metal of your snarling helm.

The archer's eyes widen. Her guard slips, fractionally, as she hovers - "You're-" she begins-

Her instant of distraction costs her. The Horror's arm *morphs* - The massive fore-limb growing, articulating out on extending metallic callipers, forming new pistons and extruding pulleys...And then it surges out at her, extending across the narrow distance with immense force, the monstrous thing smashing out with all the force of a battering ram.

It smites her from the sky. Her wings crumple; Her bow crossed over her chest, as the limb articulates into a vicing pincer - She lets out a startled cry as she smashes into the far wall, hard enough to punch the breath from her lungs.

"Nnnn-" Panic flits across her features - She manages as sharp, pained hiss, as the pincer begins to vice close with immense and awful cruelty, aiming to shear her apart...

"Etoile-!" Mistral makes it to one knee. Her shredded leg nearly comes apart, in a welter of blood; It skids out from beneath her, and she sinks to one knee, an immense frustration burning in her violet eyes - A frustration that turns to something impossibly fragile, as the Horror's great bulk swings towards her...

And then you're in motion.

And then everything changes.

You leap - Not the way a man leaps, but the way a predator leaps to bring down prey. Your halberd carves the air in a searing arc; The blade burning through the air, the fierce edge singing. You put the weight of your shoulders into your hacking stroke, chopping down with all your immense strength-

Your halberd drives into the joints of the Horror's left leg, and shears through the cables and struts that hold it upright. It's a mighty blow, but not enough to sever the limb, though crackling sparks play across the axe-head, the rusted ogre juddering in response - It feels no pain, red eyes burning in the gloom as it smashes at you with a spiked fist, a massive swinging blow; You wrench your halberd free, and *parry*-

The peal of impact - Strength against strength - is a thunderclap. Your armoured boots skid back a step across the stone floor, drawing sparks - Your blow stoving a deep crack across the Horror's barrel-chest, cracks skittering down the thing's morphing, *changing* arm...

-An arm that flares into the open-mouth barrel of a flamer.

Fire, filthy and sour-hot, boils around you. Foul industrial fuels and fouler chemicals have combined in sick alchemy. It engulfs you, tenacious as naptha, and you bathe in raw flame. The runes of protection glow beneath the blast, against the firestorm; It's not merely a physical blaze, but a spiritual one - You can feel your flesh beginning to char, inside your armour-

A nightmare maw, a spiked bear-trap, opens up on the Horror's chassis. Cables and wires coil around your halberd as you brace for the next swing - Latching onto your weapon, refusing to let go, fighting to wrench it from your grasp.

Etoile's hiss of distress becomes a cry of taut pain - Her features twisting in agony, her half-crushed wings beating against her back as she struggles against the crushing pressure. Her bow buckles beneath the strain, the golden arch bending; The first rivulets of blood trickling down perfect skin, her arms braced against the Horror's grasp-

And Mistral flinches as the Horror's guns come to bear on her, new rounds of foul, makeshift ammunition ratcheting into chambers with the *snap* of a rifle's bolt being drawn back-

-As you burn within and without, the flesh beginning to blister from your bones-

You can't-

-get your weapon free-

Years pass in a thermite blaze. The fire is inside you, eating you from within; The flames chew your flesh, as your blood begins to boil - It is consuming everything you are, all thought lost in a inferno of raw, unalloyed agony-

You *pull*, with all your might. Your halberd saws against the Horror's grasp, against the tangle of wires and cables that drag the weapon down; A line of chain-teeth grind against the axe-blade, trying to snap the haft, trying to sunder it, fighting your efforts as you pull with all the force you can muster...

It doesn't come free.

> [X] Protect Mistral.

It's a split-second decision; An effort that drives your seared form forward, past the Horror's bulk as your hands come free from your weapon, your legs propelling you in one last desperate surge-

When the Horror's guns fire, your armoured bulk is in the way.

There's no time to shove the girl out of the way. No time for a plan - For anything, except to interpose yourself, and brace for the pain to come.

The volley rakes you from end-to-end. Rivets - Nails - Flechettes of dirty metal, toxic and corrosive, punching into you from behind. The stabbing agony eclipses the flames; You can feel the howl of agony boiling out from within you as pain slash-stabs across your vision - Mistral's violet eyes wide with blank disbelief, with startled horror, her lips shaping the words-

"No-"

She reaches out to you, a gloved hand against charred plate bathed in flames-

And where you touch, the air sings with the high, humming whine of power-

(Continued)
>>
>>32608602

It happens all at once. The power surges through you, a wave of pearly iridescence that crawls across your sundered plate - A wave, a blast that tears the cloak of flames from your back, with a sound like the triumphant peal of a distant horn. Runes etch themselves into the bare metal of your armour, silver traceries as graceful and smooth as brushstrokes as they shift and shimmer and twist and crawl-

You *feel* it - Not a tingle, not an electric sizzle, but an actual surge. Like a tide of oil, pulsing from your spine to your fingertips; Translucently shimmering energy licking across your limbs, your armour's shine renewed - Burnished, the shade of red gold, of brass, mirror-polished and gleaming.

The pain fades. Power seethes through you, reknitting your wounds, quenching the flames...Until even the memory of pain is gone.

Until you stand renewed, a perfect circle of char surrounding you - Ash flaking from your armour, to reveal flawless, burnished brass.

Mistral's wordless gasp is a complex sound - Surprise, then wonder, flitting across her features; The pain momentarily forgotten, her lips shaping a breathless 'O' as her eyes register your form - The intricate runes, the heraldry an echo of her own-

The Horror's jaw champs, mindlessly - Reeking smoke coiling up from the barrels of it's weapons, as the red glow of it's eyes shift to a deadened yellow. Something has changed-

-You have changed.

Your halberd is still buried in the Horror's maw, chain-teeth grinding mindlessly against the peerless weapon. But that doesn't matter, not now:

Mistral's spear is in your hand, and ruby light gathers at the teardrop blade.

The Horror's massive fighting-limb draws back to strike-

And you're gone. You *leap*, a scarlet form blurring through the smoke - Mistral's spear scything down, as a fist full of blades hurtles past. Her spear slashes a molten furrow down the Horror's arm; It's light, impossibly well-balanced, as if longing to swing itself. It's nothing like the weapons you're used to, but it fits your hand as if made for it.

Your slash severs a nest of power conduits in the Horror's arm - Inky black fluid spurts, sparks fizzing, igniting the shambling form in a burst of cerise fire...

-As you plunge the weapon, point-first, into the Horror's face.

The impact of the blow revebrates through the creature's iron skull. Cable-sinews shear apart, the thing's head knocked crooked - Before the blade comes free in an explosion of ichor and gushing oil, coils of metal spilling out in all direction like twitching steel serpents. Your fist curls around your halberd, and you wrench it free - Brief, tiny flares of gold sparks chasing each other down the length of the haft...

And then halberd and spear come up over your head, one in each hand, and drive down in a twinned, splitting blow of extraordinary force. The Horror's arms shear off; Released, Etoile slides down the wall, as the vicing pincer goes limp-

Before you stab both weapons into the thing's very core.

It ruptures. Something screams, and shudders at the twin blades that impale it - You *twist* your grasp, and the Horror's bulk parts in sectioned halves, halves that fall heavily in opposite directions. Decapitated, the foul sensor-cluster head - Corrupt horns sprouting from the over-long skull - rolls free...

Then it catches light, and burns away to nothing in a pyre of it's own making.

(Continued)
>>
>>32608970

A lull descends. The snap and crackle of the lurid flames is the only sound in the chamber; Then a dull *clang*, as Etoile frees herself from the slack claw pinning her to the wall. White fabric flutters, her costume tattered, now - As crimson motes dance from your armour, the boon of power fading, leaving it bare metal once more.

"...Who *are* you?"

Mistral's voice is hushed, wondering - Her pale face turned upwards, as she regards your form; The incandescence departing, as you turn - Her hands against the floor, as if longing for the return of her borrowed weapon. She exhales, sharply, as her wounded leg scrapes against the floor - A flicker of pain in her violet eyes.

> "A Knight that hunts Horrors. Nothing more."

Knight.

Mistral's brow furrows, as the word echoes in the hollow space; Her slim fingers curl around her proferred spear, the point driving against the ground for support. There's something numinous, vulnerable in her gaze...Before the pain returns, her breath catching as she tries to rise.

"Mistral! Mistral, are you-" Etoile's voice is taut with worry - She's limping slightly, her bow bent and buckled; Her wings mere fading flickers as they furl behind her. She seems uncertain if she should approach, a hushed "Oh..." teased from her lips at the tableau before her...

> Give her the spear back, grab the lighter and heal her leg.

Your lighter, ornate and gargoyle-mouthed, is a work of art. There's a spark, as jade fire dances - An emerald point of motion in a shifting world. Etoile starts, as you lower the flame towards Mistral...Before the other girl glances in her direction, some unseen communication passing between them-

Her violet eyes settle onto yours. She bites her lip, nods.

When the Madou Flame engulfs her wound, she shudders, as if in spasm - Her hand settles on your wrist and *squeezes* as hard as she can, as the cleansing fire compresses months of agony into a single moment. Mistral doesn't scream, though pain flickers through those large, startlingly expressive eyes - Her chest heaving, in a surrusation of breath, as her legs uncoil beneath her - as she sways to her feet.

She tests it, gingerly - Uncertain whether it can take her weight. But when it does-

"It..."

"-It doesn't hurt."

Her hand rests on your gauntlet, now, the beginnings of a flush to her cheeks.

Etoile's at her side, a heartbeat later - Supporting Mistral, as the other girl leans against her; The strength seems to flow from her, with a low, shivery sigh, her head resting on Etoile's shoulder...

But that soft gaze rests on you, for a moment longer - Before she dips her head, and murmurs something that's lost to the night wind.

"I...don't know who you *are*," Etoile says - Cradling Mistral, a frisson of concern in her words. "I don't know what you did-"

And then she smiles. She smiles, wan and exhausted and beautiful.

"...But you saved us."

"-Thank you."

> We probably want to get out of here.

A bird-of-prey's shriek cuts through the night; The air shivers, the ground revebrating with the backwash of seething engines.

The Wing descends, graceful as a swan - Complex mechanisms articulating, ready to embrace you, to bear you away from this place.

"Ah-" Etoile shields her eyes, as dust swirls around you - A breeze to sweep the tatters of the night away. She's never seen anything like it, and the renewed wonder makes her glow from within.

Mistral stirs.

"-Wait!"

She lifts her head, her voice clear, strident:

"...At least tell m-"

The flush in her cheeks returns, for the briefest instance; New heat, tingling beneath pale skin.

A memory, years ago:

> "-What is your name?"
> He takes it from you, and gives it back changed.

> "KELL."
> "Makai Knight KELL."
> "If we meet again, I'll share the rest."

The Wing furls around you. Filaments pierce your armour, mechanisms deploying to draw you into its steel embrace. Metal feathers hum, in sympathy - Plumes of flame uncoiling, as the Wing's piercing's cry, an eagle's screech, cuts the night.

And then you fly.

The ground falls away beneath you, as you ascend. The sensation is a dizzying surge - A momentary weightlessness, with the rush of the cool night air. Mistral raises her hand, something impossibly graceful, impossibly tender about that slight gesture...

You leave them behind. You leave it all behind.

Then there is only the wind beneath your wings, as you climb ever-higher. Above a glittering city, that - Through your actions - will see another dawn.

EXTEUNT.

I'm open to questions, if there are any.)
>>
>>32609796
This Makai thing is a manga, then?

Speaking as someone who doesn't want to read through an entire novel to get the gist of a quest, what are some key points I should know about this universe?

Who're the knights, what the hell is Madou Flame, what was up with the magical girls; stuff like that.
>>
>>32609796
Well, how different are the knights here from original Garo, I know the armor doesn't have a time limit anymore, but anything else?

>>32609834
Garo is a toku (a live action, I guess) series about a Knight like the one in the quest.

Here is a video of a good fight from the series.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cv9I-ES_Xs
>>
>>32609834

It's mostly based on GARO, a live-action toku series about knights who slay demons known as 'Horrors'. It's a series aimed at older viewers, with darker plotlines, some gore and occasional nudity.

The key points are that there is an order of Knights - Known as Makai Knights, or just Knights - that slay Horrors, demonic creatures that enter our world through tainted artifacts or places of high evil. They tend to possess similarly-tainted humans (i.e. Serial killers, psychopaths) and use them as hosts to wreak havoc.

In-series, the Knights can summon suits of armour for a maximum of 99.9 seconds, to even the odds. They're universally expert swordsman, and are astonishingly lethal even without the armour. (Exceeding the time limit has severe consequences.)

>>32609853

It's fairly close. The Order is necessarily larger, in this quest; With regard to the armour, you perform a ritual before you depart that allows you to surpass the time limit. (You can still get knocked out of it, however.)

There are also Horrors that don't require hosts to unleash their full malevolence. Additionally, your armour begins with bare metal and develops the full set of honours over time - As a form of character progression, and as a kind of 'living history'.

The largest change, I'd say, would be the introduction of magical girls to the setting.
>>
>>32609898
Magical girl hand holding, the greatest weapon not known to Makai-kind.
>>
>>32609921
Actually don't we have Makai Priests... they could count as magical girls (the female ones at least.)
>>
>>32609898
So, if we get knocked out of our armor and resummon it, are we still stuck with the 99.9 limit?

Also, Makai Priests, are they a thing?

I'll admit: In the runup to this Quest, I was contemplating how close to hew to the setting. I actually had multiple 'origins' and potential plot arcs for the main character, including -

i) The main character hailing from a conspiracy that seeks to control the use of magic in the world, and relies on the sealing of demons - And the capture of magical sources - to power their sorcery and their armour.

ii) The main character as a government operative, with a bland name like 'The Bureau of Public Safety' or 'The Secretists' as a cover for a widespread and powerful coalition with multiple highly skilled operatives.

iii) A religious zealot who hunts down a resurgence of vampiric kaijin.

Ultimately, I decided to go with what I was most familiar with - Though I may revisit the other settings, once I've settled on a system.

Yes, if you're knocked out of your armour and resummon it, you're stuck with the time limit. I'll point out that the PC is a relatively new Makai Knight; The ritual - Performed by the Watchdog - gives him a substantial edge until he can find his footing.

Makai Priests are a thing, but they're not transfigured by magic; Their skills come with practice and training. The girls in this chapter had substantial raw power, but weren't very skilled.

The PC does have a Priest who supports him, who will likely be introduced in the next chapter.

I'll add that this idea was meant to be lighter, and potentially more romantic, than my usual Quests. That is, with slightly less of an emphasis on pragmatism and more on heroism.

I might simply run a GARO Quest with no added elements at some point, however; This was largely for a change of pace.

I approve of heroism. Joker Quest does tend to get a little dark.

But this means we'll go for a harem even harder than before. BE WARNED.

I want to ask why the Magical Girls don't know about the Makai Knights or vice versa, but I think we should find out in the quest, so let me ask something else.

Does the spell being made to give the new Knight some help means that as the MC grows stronger he will get the timelimit back?

Always good to see you OP and nice to see you got a chance to explore this other quest. I take it this the Knight/Magical Girl setting that you talked about in the Youma Quest One Shot. Hopefully when Joker Quest is done you can run this or the Youma Quest.

By the by, I've archived this thread in sup /tg/ since I missed the first one.

Thanks, I really appreciate it. I'd have archived the other one, but I needed an early start.

Being able to sustain the armour indefinitely has significant benefits; As the MC grows stronger, the choice is really up to him.

The main drawback of the ritual is being unable to remove the armour, until you're punched out of it or until the ritual is reversed. Physical exhaustion is also a problem; When the armour is removed, it's like going without sleep for a week.

Just food for thought as well OP - have you considered possibly combining this with Youma Quest? I know it can get complicated having two protagonists, but it might be interesting to have two opposing perspectives and possibly themes.

Give you a chance to do a more Heroic story alongside the kinda dark story your readers are used to seeing.

I'll think about it. A problem is that the Youma of Youma Quest are radically different from Horrors; For instance, they have their own society, and an actual city they hail from - A city constantly rent by internal strife from warring Dark Generals, but it's still a city.

Horrors don't have an established culture. In addition, Horrors are functionally immortal - When Youma die, they're gone for good.

So what's the 'Wing' thing we were using?
>>
>>32610606

Simply put, it's a glider. It's shaped like a giant bird of prey, complete with wings and a head; It transports you by attaching onto you, and taking flight. It's not a combat device, but it's capable of travelling at high speeds and lifting a Makai Knight in full armour.

It became a consideration with the ritual that allows you to surpass the time limit: Knights in GARO have a kind of dignity to them, and are hardly the type to sprint across rooftops.

The idea was inspired by falconry; As members of the nobility keep trained falcons to do their hunting, the Wing seemed to be a logical extension, allowing the PC to make suitably dramatic entrances and exits without causing an undue disturbance.

There are Makai steeds, but those are weapons of war, not for transportation.

Unless I'm mistaken, these will be the only threads until OP is finished with his original quest - Joker Quest.

The blurb in the first part has some weird but intriguing references.
