You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

After an informative (and existentially distressing) lecture courtesy of Sir Gregory, you and the Princess made your way to the courtyard where you were joined by Princess Luciana.

>Congratulations, you are now a timid LLAMA!
>Llamas are strong and hardy... but also rather skittish.
>The Princess considers you to be her friend!
>But while llamas may be majestic, they still don't count as people.

"Nice to finally see you again, Luciana," you waving to her.
"Yes, well..." Luciana mumbles, blushing ever so slightly.
"I heard that you were up all night thinking about me?" you say, unable to keep from grinning ear to ear.

Yeah, that look on her face is priceless.

"Y- you know why I was up so late," Luciana says as she stomps over to the table and chugs down the cup of tea that Arnaud poured for her before taking a seat next to Marianne.
"Hmm, I think I'll go and prepare another pot of tea," the old butler says as he quickly retreats from the courtyard..

You can hear him laughing to himself as he goes, too.

Maybe we can apologize later for being super catty and teasing lately? Marianne seemed to take this mornings joke worse than usual, I thought. We're probably just decompressing from the super tense crazyness of the trip.

Not now, though. It's teasing time now.

"Soo..." you say as your mouth slowly creeps into a wide grin, "about that bet we made last night..."
"Ah yes, I'd almost forgotten!" Marianne chirps in an artificial manner. "I'm sure that you remember last night's wager, yes?"
"Of course you'd demand to see it the second I ger here..." Luciana mumbles as she slouches back into her chair.

And then you notice that Takamaru's doing his best to keep from laughing himself... looks like he has a sense of humor after all.

"I'll have you know that I stayed up FAR past the time that I usually go to sleep in order to do this stupid thing," Luciana mutters as she reaches into the top of her dress and pulls a small, folded-up piece of paper from her chest.

Huh, so princesses carry stuff there too. You haven;t seen anyone do that since the last time you went shopping with Citrine, shortly before you left for the army.

"...why is it all crumpled up like that?" Marianne asks as she edges in closer to her friend. "Surely you didn't intend to throw this one away as well?"
"Ugh, no!" Luciana growls as she pushes Marianne away from her. "I messed up so many times that I ran out of the paper that one of the maids brought me," she sighs, "and I was too embarrassed to ask for more so instead I was forced to ask Takamaru here..."

As if on cue, her stoic bodyguard waves to the two of you.

"A good deal of his spells deal with summoning animals that are made from folded pieces of paper, so that's what I ended up using to draw on instead."

Come to mention it, the paper she's holding looks to be in the shape of... is that supposed to be a frog?

"How cute," Marianne says. "But is your drawing anywhere near as cute as that?"
"J... just be quiet for a minute, will you?" Luciana stammers, her face now completely flushed. "Anyways, I did the stupid drawing, so here!"

Luciana smacks you on the chest, the paper frog that contains her drawing falling into your jacket as she withdraws her hand.

"Um, thanks," you say as you pick it up and get to work unfolding it, careful not to tear the paper that contains the end results of your girlfriend's hard work.
"Try not to laugh too hard," Luciana mumbles.

Eventually you have the paper completely unfolded, which reveals...

"Hmm..." you furrow your brow and assume a stern expression. "You got the shape of my sword all wrong," you say, pointing to her rendition of it. "Mine's double-sided and shaped completely differently, while you drew one that looks more like an Eastern design?"
"...huh?" Luciana stares at you.
"Not to mention that the hilt shape's all off, and grip on my sword's longer than my hand but you drew it so that it looks as if it stops at maybe my pinky finger..."

As you point out all the errors in her drawing of your sword (and only the sword), you can DEFINITELY hear Takamaru snorting as he tries in vain to suppress his laughter.

But Luciana... she just looks really confused, and her eyes are starting to water up.

Eh, that's enough teasing for now. Your aim was never to actually hurt her feelings or anything, after all.

"It's actually really cute, Luciana," you say, giving her a quick peck on the cheek. "And the frog paper only helps with that, too."
"Y- you're not just messing with me?" Luciana asks, wiping her eyes with her sleeve.
"No, I mean it," you reply. "I seriously love it."
"Th... thanks..." she mumbles.
"I think I'll try and get a frame to put it in the next time I'm in the city..."
"PLEASE DON'T," she says as she takes a FIRM grip on your shoulders.

"If you insist," you say, laughing nervously as you pry yourself away from her. "I'll just put it away somewhere then..."

Taking pity on her, you begin refolding the paper back into its frog shape...

"Hey, wait," Marianne says as she gets up from her seat and walks behind you. "I'd like to get a look at her handiwork before you put it away."

It is only fair, seeing as how you showed Luciana the picture that you drew of Marianne...

"Yeah, alright," you say, unfolding the picture so that she can get a good look at it.
"Marianne, please don't-"
"Fair is fair," Marianne says as she leans in over your shoulder. "I'm sure that Reinhold was just being nice to spare your feelings, so let's see just how bad your art skills have degraded over the years..."

Taking the paper from your hands, Marianne examines it thoroughly...

"Still as awful as ever," Marianne says, "but I will admit that you've gotten far less so over the years."
"Uh, is that supposed to be a compliment?" you ask.
"Yes," she nods. "The last picture of hers that I saw looked like something akin to abstract art..."
"Come on, please don't tell him about that," Luciana sighs.

"i suppose that's the closest thing I'll get to a compliment from you," Luciana mumbles.

Finished with her fun, Marianne hands you back the picture. Just as you finish folding it back into its cute froggy shape, Arnaud returns with more tea for the extra guests.

Opting to avoid any further conflicts, you keep the matter of the picture to your self as the old butler pours Luciana and Takamaru a cup of tea and leaves the extra teapot on the table before hurrying away once again.

She's definitely on the defensive now...

"He offered his sword up to Niklaus for experimentation," Marianne says as she takes a sip of tea. "And I suppose it paid off for once."

"I see," he nods before returning to his seat.

Having finished showing your sword off, you spend the next few minutes struggling to get it back onto your belt in a way that's comfortable.

"Now that that's done with," Marianne begins, "I take it that the two of you will be joining us for the rest of the day?"
"That was the plan at first," Luciana replies, "but my oversleeping really threw all my plans for the day off," she sighs. "I need to get my things together and make sure that Elena's ready too..."

"I would never pass up a chance to eat her cooking," you say as you mouth stars watering just thinking about it.

"I think I -will- pass," Marianne sighs. "As much as I may look up to his wife, I have no interest in eating dinner with Sir Gregory himself..."
"I thought so," she mumbles.

Depending on how late it runs, you might be able to fit in your training with Arnaud after you get back... and either way, he's sure to understand if you missed one more day.

Probably going to have to be more careful in the future, though.

"Well there go my plans for tomorrow," you say. "So what's the itinerary for the rest of today, Marianne?"

The rest of your teatime is spent with the two princesses griping about various boring classes that they've been forced to take as part of their princessly duties.

And though most of the girl talk went in one ear and out the other, you did pick up on that Luciana's kind of envious that Marianne gets to take classes that she actually finds interesting. Apparently, most of Luciana's were geared to more ladylike pursuits that would make her more attractive for marriage.

That would definitely explain why she's so damned good at dancing...

"Ugh, shut up..."

And with that, you and Marianne head to the library.

"Wonderful, everything's already here," Marianne says as she makes her way to the table and takes a seat. "I'll have to thank Gerhard later..."

You expect him to show up upon the mention of his name, but surprisingly enough, he doesn't appear. It's kind of disappointing.

"There's no lecture?" you ask as you sit down next to the Princess.
"No, not today," Marianne replies. "I have a philosophy book to finish, and then we'll go over what I read at the end of the week... there's no need for you to paticipate though, you can go ahead and read whatever you want instead."

Now would have been a perfect time to bring that book that she lent you, too.

It might be interesting. Maybe you can ask questions about it.

questions for arch
1) are dullahan a thing in this setting
2) if yes, what is their element
3) if metal, can we summon one as our familiar
4) if no, can we still summon a familiar, i want to know what rein would get. mostly because i really can't think of much in the way of metal elemental creatures
>>
Yeah, you're kind of at a loss right now... might as well ask for Marianne's assistance before she really gets started reading.

"Umm, Marianne?" you turn to her.
"What is it?" Marianne replies.
"I know that now would probably be a good time to finish off that book you lent me, but I left it in my room... would you happen to have any suggestions of what I could read in the meantime?"
"Of course you didn't bring anything for yourself," she sighs.

Marianne then gets up from her seat and walks over to a nearby bookshelf, tracing her finger along the spines of the books until stopping in front of one in particular. After doublechecking to make sure it's what she was looking for, she brings it along with her back to the table and places it in front of you before sitting down herself.

>4) if no, can we still summon a familiar
IIRC the summoning of familiars is taboo in this setting because it summons them somewhat randomly based on magical ability. And the dragons weren't terribly happy with their babies up and vanishing into thin air every now and again.
>>
>>32582289
Reminder that familiar summoning has fallen out of practice because it can result in accidentally kidnapping baby dragons. And then you've got an irate Dragondad to answer to.

"I remembered how you were completely lost during Sir Gregory's lecture, so here," she says, pointing to the cover of the book. "It's a book that missionaries use while trying to convert new believers."
"Umm, thanks?" you say as you open it.

The first thing you notice is that this book is fully illustrated, and the text itself is much larger than you're used to seeing.

"That one in particular is aimed specifically at children, so I'm sure that even you'd be able to understand it," Marianne says, giving you a quick glance before opening her own book.

Well, might as well get started...

Long ago, there was nothing. No light nor shadow, no stone nor water, not even time itself flowed. There was simply the nothing that always was, and would ever be.

Within this void, and outside it as well, there was God. As there was nothing, God was content with nothing... but he eventually grew bored with this stagnation.

And so, God uttered the first words of his perfect Language. In an instant, his Breath filled the spaces between spaces. As there was no longer Nothing, He named this new creation the World. But though this great change pleased God as it happened, stagnation quickly took root once more.

>[3/?]
>>
>>32582340

he'll do it one day

it does make me wonder if there are any familiars around even now though but i doubt we'll get around to that
>>
>>32582496
Technically, there is exactly one alive at the moment.
All the others who practiced that technque have long since died of old age.
>>
>>32582473

As God spoke unto the World of his hatred of stagnation, the World acted in kind. Deciding to ever remain in motion, with this first movement came the beginning of Time. And so the Breath of God swirled and expanded within the World, collecting into the stars in the sky and also the darkness that separated them. And God looked upon his creation and was pleased that the World wished to see that his will be done.

For a time, God was content to watch as the darkness of his creation gradually filled with the shining lights of the infant stars... but eventually he came to feel that with this would also come stagnation, for what would come after all of his lingering Breath that was scattered amongst his creation had collected into stars? Would that not bring more of the stagnation that he so hated?

[4/?]
>>
>>32582529
>there is exactly one alive
are you talking about that guy that familiared a phoenix like 4 seconds after it died when it was still basically just ash and then somehow fused with it and got its resurrection power
>>
>>32582568
Yup.
>>
>>32582553

Deciding to act upon the World for the first time since he created it, God located within it a star that he found pleasing, and once more spoke his perfect Language. God declared that around this star would spin a Planet, composed of the very same Breath that the stars were made from. Ever eager to please its creator, the World did as it was told and brought this Planet into existence- a ball of fire and lightning and molten stone, ever spinning and changing.

And God said unto the World, "As my Breath brought this Planet life, it too shall have its own Breath. And that Breath shall gather over the Planet and fill all things, but there shall be no Stagnation within it. It shall be divided between light and dark, between fire and stone. And from there it shall be divided further still, though they shall remain the same at their core."

As the World was so ordered, it acted. And so there was more change, and His Breath filled this Planet.

>[5/?]
>>
>>32582613

Then God said unto the World, "As my Breath gathered into the lights of the heavens, it shall also gather upon the Planet which I have created. That which is like shall attract more of the same, and from there there shall be Souls. And those Souls shall speak unto you as I do, and create Change, for that pleases me."

And so from his Breath there were Souls, and those Souls were the first Spirits. They were Anrasorana and Alsiradna, Ardiaotol and Thanavinra, the first Lightning and the first Flame and countless others. And God looked upon them and was pleased with what He had created.

God continued to watch over this newborn Planet along with the Spirits which lived upon it and continued to be born from it. Over time, the flames of the Planet gave way to cold stone, and waters flowed upon them, and winds blew over them, and God saw that it was beautiful, yet incomplete. And so He spoke unto the World that this Planet would have a Moon which chased after it as the Planet itself chases after its star, so the World acted to please the creator of all things.

But the Planet misheard the perfect Language of God, creating not one Moon but two. This is not what God wanted, for Moons are spiteful and meant to be alone. And so the two chased after one another and fought over who would be allowed to be closest to the Planet, eventually getting into a great battle which ended with both of them being split in twain.

Taking pity upon the twin Moons, God ordered the World to mend the two Moons into one, and so it was done. The Planet was left with one Moon, and then the World took what was left and fashioned it into a massive Ring with which it adorned the Planet as a reminder to never forget the great mistake that was made.

>>
>>32582861

The World's actions pleased God, and He was content for a time. But soon he grew weary with the denizens of the Planet, for the Spirits that he had created did not hate Stagnation as he did. And so, God said unto the World that there would be plants and animals which grew on the land and fish that swam in the sea, and the World brought them into being.

But these creatures were short of life, fighting and dying with the blink of the eye. Taking pity upon them, God declared that those most exceptional of beasts would grow Souls should they live long enough, and those Souls would become Spirits from there should they further show themselves to be worthy.

But God soon grew bored with this as well, for the number of animals who showed themselves to be worthy was far too small. Desiring a more perfect creature which would not wither with the passing of time and die as the others do, God spoke unto the World...

So... Magic based on 'God's mistake' could exist? Could the 'Magic of the Ring' be somehow connected to that of Vilernite's strange 'physics' bending power that works by surrounding something?

Ring is made of Vilnernite. When brought into low-orbit the ring becomes dense enough to nullify all magic on the planet, causing all magic-based lifeforms to go extinct. I like it
>>
>>32583120
it doesn't nullify magic, it just stops you from being able to turn script into a spell. elementals and shit can still cast
>>
>>32583129
Shame. Such a plot device could've made for an epic campaign. One that could even make 'God' take notice

"Hey."

The sound of a voice calling out to you breaks the silence that had previously filled the library, along with your concentration.

"You can finish that book later, it's time to go," Marianne says as she gathers the books that had been laid out for her into a neat stack.
"...oh," you reply as you close reluctantly close the book that you'd been reading. "Next class is etiquette, right?"
"Yes, and then you're free for the rest of the day," Marianne replies. "Or night, as it was..."

Not wanting to be late, the two of you exit the library and head to the Princess's final class for the day.

It was explained at least once during the Q&A thread:
http://archive.foolz.us/tg/thread/29761933/#29766733
http://archive.foolz.us/tg/thread/29761933/#29767949

Arch said that he had explained it before then as well, but I don't remember when/where/if that actually was the case.

That said, we recently had Witches explained to us, who focus their magic around summoning and binding 'demons' (ostensibly pseudoelementals, taking strange forms due to their elemental progenitors' lack of other lifeforms to emulate) from what is assumed to be another world.

...which basically seems like a potentially consensual, contract-based, selective Familiar summoning, thereby solving almost all of the morality issues related to the old system.

All that's left is allowing the 'demon' to retain its physical form (or having it adopt that of a more familiar creature) rather than binding it to an object, I guess, which we never really went into the feasibility of.

That, and whether it's actually possible to send the summoned 'demon' back in the event that it either does not want to or can't safely be bound.

>>32582977
Well, now we know that (at least as far as religious cosmology is concerned) the Ring is deeply tied with the Moon, so their associated magic would probably be somewhat similar.

>>32583276
>Are we annoying, being this curious?
If nothing else, it's a good way for her to help internalize what she learned. So even if it's annoying, at least it's the useful sort of annoying.
