Welcome to Academy City. The time is late morning, the weather is summer, and the date is August 19.

You are Kyril Torikov, ‘Level 2’ Telekinetic Child Error and you weren’t surprised by Nunotaba’s bad news. Things had gone mostly to plan. You and Sagara had managed to get yourselves jobs as hired muscle, the kind that were going to guard the very same facility you were going to hit. Ideally Tadakuni should have been part of it as well but given the entry requirements you were willing to let him bow out of that. That said Nunotaba’s problem was of greater importance.

“やろう, it is a set up,” she told you.

Nokleben, the project security supervisor, had requested Nunotaba’s presence so that she could serve as a scapegoat. Given that the whole lot of you were intent on sabotaging the Level 6 Shift, either you had been discovered or Nokleben was just covering all his bases.

“I do not see why this is a problem,” your girlfriend, Asuka, chimed in, “It changes nothing in the long run. Security will be lax, knowing that it can blame you for it, thus increasing the chance of successfully introducing the virus.”

“だが, it shall make our escape much harder,” Nunotaba argued.

“You should trust that I, your bodyguard, am more than capable of handling that,” Asuka answered, “But what of your problems dear?”

“Tadakuni didn’t make the cut, so it’s just me and Sagara,” you explained.

“Then perhaps he could serve as a distraction, or insurance?” Asuka suggested.

“はい, it would not be hard for me to supply the relevant assets either way.”

The decision, as always, was yours to make.

>Right now you effectively have it set up so that reading a book for 1 hour gives us 1xp. The three upgrades available were +force (20xp), +manip. point (20xp), and +precision (15xp). The only difference between this and regular xp systems is that we pre-spend the xp as we get it by deciding what book it was that we read.

>As far as I can see, you've made the same mistake as the qm of BFQ. You tied skill progression to "sit around and read/study and miss out on interesting quest things and plot hooks".

>Yeah, it's probably realistic that this kind of studying would give the best results at lower levels where abilities are rather limited, but you don't have to do it once we actually manage to complete these books we have. Don't just pile bigger longer books on Kyril. Sure, he can have a new stack for nightly/downtime reading in addition to his regular activities, but it needs to not be the main show in regards to progression.

>If I were you, I would set up some broad stats or perks that are relevant to TK. Things like Force, Precision, Additional 'Hand', 'Hand' Size, Range, etc. And then some perks that show some specialization or neat tricks like shields, flight, increasing force by applying it in bursts instead of sustained, particle shenanigans( lv4 can probably do some), that thing Unabara does, and whatever else really.

>Once you have those, start putting xp into the relevant stats every time we do something. Fights, studying, dicking around with TK, etc

“I think he should secure the escape now that we know things are getting serious,” you decided, “I don’t think they’re going to let you just walk out of there.”

“よい, I shall arrange for a motorcycle with a sidecar, and a sidearm,” Nunotaba nodded.

“Wait can’t I just use your taser?” Tadakuni asked.

She nodded again but also got up to make a call. The next item on the agenda was getting acquainted with the layout of the facilities as well as any potential defences they may have. The review continued on throughout lunch and later in to the afternoon. You were pretty confident you had memorised most of the important parts then. The last thing you wanted to be doing was getting lost down there.

With that done, the plan was finalised. Asuka’s role had remained unchanged. She was going to guard Nunotaba as she made her way to deploy the virus and to make sure she succeeded. Assisting them were you and Sagara, the inside men. Kyousuke was going to be off somewhere to spot for you and to keep everyone updated on things as they developed outside. Securing the escape for Asuka and Nunotaba was Tadakuni. You and Sagara had to hope that your covers weren’t blown or else you may have more than a bit of troubling getting out alive.

There was still time, a few hours, before you had to report in for the ‘job’ as hired muscle. This job felt like it was bigger than the ones you had done so far, not to mention the consequences. It was probably a good idea to do something to occupy yourself a bit before the big job though you’re not sure what.

If there was someone you wanted to talk to before embarking of your current endeavour it would be Sparky. She was the one with the greatest stake in the downfall of Level 6 Shift. After all they were making clones of her to be killed off so that the first ranked Level 5 would hopefully attain Level 6. Nunotaba had confirmed that the project was now down to the last two facilities. It was why you were acting now. Before they could retreat and regroup, Nunotaba was going to strike and it was all due to Sparky’s efforts. She had singlehandedly taken down eighteen such facilities on her own in the past three days. It was to be expected of the third ranked Level 5 but she was still only human.

“What is it?” you were surprised she even answered the call at all.

“Nothing, just checking in with you,” you answered, “You doing alright?”

“Yeah I’m fine,” she was most likely lying but it wasn’t like you could tell, “It’s only just a little more before I can take a break.”

“If you say so, don’t push it Sparky.”

“Hah, that’s rich,” she chuckled, “I’m getting advice from a thug like you.”

“You’re getting advice from an elder is all,” you took it in good humour, “You should know, with a junior of your own and all.”

“All too well,” she agreed, “Well I need to get ready for the last push, talk to you later?”

“Yeah, I’m getting ready for work too.”

“Nothing honest I bet.”

“Honest enough, but yeah, I’ll talk to you later.”

You hung up. There was still time to kill so you spent the rest of it reading. You weren’t surprised a neurological expert like Nunotaba would have a textbook like Minds, Memories, and Multitasking lying about her apartment.

The time is now 1800, the weather is cooling, and the date remains unchanged.

Sagara and you had arrived just as scheduled and the same person greeted you at the warehouse. He led you out towards a van where you all got in and it drove off towards the S-Processor Cranial Nerve Application Analysis Laboratory. It was part of the S-Processor Laboratories along with its twin, the Pathology Analysis Research Laboratory. You were being briefed that they were probably going to come under attack by a high-levelled electromaster and that your job was to assist the specialist team tasked with stopping them. Despite the fact that you were up against an electromaster Azai gave Tadakuni a gun as well as a few mags for it. Since you already had your own firearm you were simply given more ammunition, three mags in addition to the one in your gun.

Once you had disembarked from your transport, you were glad Kyousuke had done the appropriate reconnaissance beforehand. Azai had instructed with you to familiarise yourself with the place, giving you the appropriate security ID, to stay out of the way of the specialist team and to do as you’re told. There were other thuggish looking personages milling and patrolling about but there was not real order amongst them. They were just dumb muscle without a real purpose, unlike you.

Neat. How many hours did Kyril manage before he got bored with it?
>>
You decided to get a look at the specialist team and Sagara followed your lead. It might even be the same girls from yesterday night even if you didn’t get a good look at them. Turns out you were right. To be more specific it was one of the girls you managed a glimpse of last night, the one with a hooded sweatshirt. She was resting in one of the benches looking bored out of her mind like most everyone else. As you moved closer however someone caught your shoulder.

“Hey! You didn’t forget what Azai said didja?” it looked like another thug.

“No I didn’t,” you replied easily, “But it can’t hurt to look right?”

“Yeah, look but don’t touch,” the thug said, “That’s Kinohata Saiai, part of ITEM.”

“Must be one tough cookie then,” Sagara chimed in.

“Don’t let that look fool ya, she’s a Level 4,” he warned, “Piss her off and she’ll tear you a new asshole, literally.”

“So it’s just her?” you asked.

“Hell naw, there’s three more of them but she’s the one standing guard here. One’s guarding the other lab and the last two are reserves. I think one of them is a Level 5.”

“Level 5?” your surprise wasn’t faked, “I totally don’t want to get in their way in that case.”

“Too right man, too right,” he agreed.

It looked like your discussion was loud enough to attract Kinuhata’s attention because she got up from the bench and made her way toward the three of you.

“What are you super staring at?” she demanded.

“Nothing ma’am,” the thug replied nervously, “Right guys?”

You and Sagara nodded silently. She only huffed, not too convinced.

Good luck with that. She's got short range Nitrogen-focused aerokinesis. It's automatically reactive like Accelerator's reflection, though it just forms solid barriers instead of returning the projectile to sender. She can tank shots from, well, tanks. There was no point in trying to make small talk here. You didn’t want to attract any attention let alone be recognisable. If what was said about ITEM was even half true then you would probably live longer if you didn’t cross them. Toulour was also right. Their name was ridiculous, even if it had some significance that you had yet to grasp. Thus you made your excuses and left Kinuhata to her boring wait. At least you could patrol. They travelled in pairs or threes and mostly stayed out of the way of the researchers who were running about moving boxes. Those were important documents no doubt but you didn’t pay it much attention.

What you did pay attention to was the fact that Nunotaba had just brushed by you. Asuka was two steps behind her before they disappeared around a corner. The curled up note in your jacket pocket indicated that they were going to were going to enter the restricted area now. She needed your help to distract the guard in the camera room and she was expecting you to do so in the next few minutes before she made her move. Regardless of whether you did or not she was going to continue come hell or high water.

It was trivial of you to gain access to the camera room. They had a guard there anyway, he wasn’t a thug but he was looking rather bored all the same. After all, an electromaster could easily circumvent the cameras anyway so they probably reasoned there wasn’t much point in manning the cameras. Nunotaba was walking the corridors towards the restroom and you probably had another minute before she made her move. Now how were you going to distract him?

Well the guy was bored so you guess you could make conversation with him and ease it. There was no need for anything drastic just yet.

“Hey what are you doing here?” he asked.

“Making sure the cameras are manned,” you replied.

“Yeah well it’s a boring job but someone’s gotta do it.”

“If you need a break now’s the time for it,” you said.

“Night’s still young. Don’t really need a coffee just yet,” he shrugged.

Looks like Nunotaba was making her move now so you yourself moved to another corner of the room, out of the doorway to make him pay less attention to the screen that Nunotaba was on. Sagara for his part stood between the guard and the screen in question.

“Man if I knew this was going to be long job I’d have gotten myself some food first,” you complained.

“I hear you,” he replied before turning, “I should have some of that instant stuff here.”

He saw Sagara looking at the screen.

“See anything?”

“Just the coats running around,” your friend shrugged in turn.

“That part is the old service tunnels and everything, off-limits right now though. If you saw anyone then they probably aren’t supposed to be there.”

“Tell you what, we’ll check it out to make sure,” Sagara offered.

“Then we can come back for some of that good stuff,” you finished.

“Yeah, yeah, go do your job and mooch off me,” he chased you out with good cheer.

As you made your way towards the tunnel entrance Sagara confirmed that Nunotaba and Asuka had made it through without the guard noticing. Unfortunately Kinuhata had decided to join you. It seems your camera buddy had given her a heads up and to alleviate boredom she had decided to come with you.

[1/2]
>>
>>32573928
Following her orders you navigated down to a lower level area which had been deemed off-limits. In your way however stood Asuka, The Dean unsheathed and held lazily at her side.

“Well, well, looks like I’m going to get my fight after all,” she licked her lips.

“I’ll super handle her,” Kinuhata recognised her as dangerous, “One of you get back up, the other get the other bitch with her.”

You moved forward drawing your gun as you did so. Kinuhata followed right behind you as Asuka charged forward. Your shots were wild. You never intended to hit her anyway. The Dean’s tip was thrust forward straight and Kinuhata who seemed to pay little attention to it, like she had some kind of armour on. Thus she was surprised when her momentum was arrested by it. Maybe she was expecting the metal on the sword to simple crumple from the forces involved. It allowed you to slip by Asuka who was grinning even wider now that she drew her blade back for another cut. Kinuhata reacted instantly, moving her arm up to block the blow as she drew a hand gun from her hoodie. That was when Asuka drew her second blade from the small knot in her hair and ruined Kinuhata’s aim.

“Interesting barrier,” Asuka commented, “I wonder if The Dean is capable of slicing through it.”

“You should super shut your mouth,” Kinuhata replied.

She followed her words with a head butt to create space but you didn’t get to see the rest of the fight. If Kinuhata wanted help then she wasn’t asking and besides you had to pretend to stop Nunotaba. Sagara was probably smart enough to get lost in the maze down here and delay any additional security.

By the time you got to Nunotaba she was typing furiously at the console and despite her efforts the same error message appeared on the screen.

“くっそ,” she swore, “Torikov we will need to disconnect this Unit 20001 from the network.”

“What?” she pointed to the window, “How?”

You followed her out. The sounds of continued battled carried its way through the halls. As you arrived you could see Unit 20001 suspended in the tank. It was a child, elementary school age, you reckoned, and she had more than a passing resemblance to Sparky, the original. It was probably what she looked like as a kid.

[1/2]
>>
>>32574764
“We will need to kill her, or take her,” Nunotaba started typing some more on another console, “どうしお, what should we do?”

She was probably debating it just as hard as you were. On one hand, destroying it was easy and would allow Nunotaba to just re-upload the virus. Taking her was the harder path. You weren’t leaving anything but a virus and at this rate you might be leaving someone behind.

You had considered your options. Killing her for one was equivalent of killing a child version of Sparky, and if Sparky ever found out you were toast. That and you really didn’t want to go that far just yet. Taking her had its own problems too. Where were you going to keep her and how were you going to make sure she was safe? That didn’t take in to account the fact that you now had to smuggle her out of a growing clusterfuck upstairs. You chose the one option that was better for your conscience.

“We’re taking her with us, get her out.”

Nunotaba nodded and worked the console. Soon enough, the young girl, Unit 20001 was released. She was still asleep and you prayed she would stay that way longer as you wrapped her up in your jacket.

“Destroy everything,” Nunotaba commanded.

You did as she commanded as she took the girl and waited outside.

“よし, now we must discuss our exit strategy.”

“I don’t think we should go back the same way we came,” you agreed, “These tunnels, they continue on until we hit the other lab right?”

She nodded.

“Then we might as well head that way.”

“だが, the Railgun will have attacked that facility. We may face stiff resistance.”

True but then again you were ordered to stay out of ITEM’s way so if you were going to encounter anyone it’d be the rest of ITEM. That was if they didn’t split up and either way there was a chance you’d encounter their Level 5. So the question was whether you’d rather fight your way through an army of thugs or the rest of ITEM.

You know, I don't know if we should try to unload LO on Accel. I'm all for getting him drunk and seeing what happens, but if we leave him with a kid he'll probably be all annoyed with us, and then we can't try and get him to teach us how to TK our way up a level.

You would rather take your chances with thugs than another Level 5. Nunotaba fell in step behind you as you led the way back up, gun drawn. Besides you weren’t going to ditch Sagara. It looked like Asuka and Kinuhata had taken their fight elsewhere. The steel walls had deep gouges and head-sized impact craters. You broke in to a run as more and more of the hallway was littered with stray limbs. The owners of said limbs were the thugs that had been hired and thankfully Sagara wasn’t amongst them. Nunotaba had stopped to grab a gun from amongst them before following after you. You didn’t need to stop to collect them, drawing extra backup pieces with you Ability.

Asuka was still in a bitter struggle with Kinuhata. They were stalemated still and both were breathing heavy. It was Asuka that looked worse for wear, with her scuffed up clothing and stray cuts. Kinuhata was still spotless and hadn’t tired to the extent that your girlfriend had. Perhaps it was her Ability that kept her safe, whatever it was it gave her the advantage. She still hadn’t spotted you yet as you took cover behind a doorway. The door itself was lying on the floor cleaved in to so many pieces of useless scrap metal. Then again the edges looked sharp. It was a pretty clear sprint to the exit but you weren’t sure who else was still in the area.

You probably could blindside Kinuhata and distract her but then you’re not sure how that would work and you’d have to be out in the open to do it. You could leave Asuka and trust her to pull back on her own but you’re not sure if she would.

I big hit might not injure her much or at all because of her offense armour, but it will still fling her away as was demonstrated by the times she was hit with huge guns in the LNs.

All the force we can muster focused as small as we can get it into the side of her head or her ankles would probably do -something-.

eh, the way I see it, since we're gonna (potentially) butt heads with espers way above weight class, we're going to have make every second (or fraction of a second) count. sometimes rate of fire is more desirable than pinpoint accuracy.

use to TK to steady it and cramp indoor spaces (which we seem to be in quite a bit on the job)make the accuracy issue moot.

I agree with get git gud with gun and get proper accessories though

You picked up one of the shards of the door and sent it Kinuhata’s way. You could lift 232.44 kg, but this thing weighed next to nothing in comparison to that so you could impart a great deal of speed to it. It probably wasn’t like Sparky’s Railgun but it was plenty fast. Kinuhata’s only clue was Asuka’s widening smile before she was knocked off her feet and sent flying down the hallway. That was plenty enough of a distraction that allowed you to book it out of the facility. Kyousuke reported a black armoured car was heading towards the lab and you weren’t going to stick around to find out who was in it. Tadakuni’s getaway vehicle had you squeezing on the back with Asuka but it wasn’t like she was complaining. Thus the five of you sped off in to the night.

The time is way late at night, the weather is relaxed, and the date is August 20.

Nunotaba’s apartment was where you regrouped with Sagara and Kyousuke. Tadakuni was still out there giving whatever pursuers the roundabout, stopping randomly in different areas to throw off pursuers. He wouldn’t be back for a while yet but it wasn’t like he was complaining though.

“Well what a fine mess we have here,” Asuka was though.

It was indeed a fine mess, seeing as you had just stolen what looked like an elementary school version of Sparky’s clone, not to mention a handful of handguns. That latter wasn’t much of a problem. Nunotaba knew a fence or two and if that didn’t work out you were sure THIEF did. The main problem with Unit 20001 was that you had no idea what to do with her now.

[1/2]
>>
>>32577520
What about...you know...proper planning and diplomacy and bring bigger fishes?
>>
>>32577530
In the short term you could probably keep her with you, seeing as Touma kept a certain childish nun in his room. The problem was that you had meddled with Level 6 Shift more than you had planned to. Nunotaba was actually partially giddy about looking in to this mysterious and unknown clone of Sparky. Perhaps Unit 20001 held the key to stopping the experiment. However you knew the depth of which the experiment went and just having 20001 in your possession painted a huge target on your back. Tonight you were probably safe for now but come the morning and the day after you would have to watch your back. You haven’t had a run in with an assassin yet and you didn’t want to start now.

To be fair your job was no further than assisting Nunotaba in introducing the virus. Now that it was done you could just easily wash your hands of this. There was a chance that Nunotaba would ask you for a favour but that didn’t seem likely. Even if you wanted to help here there weren’t too many people you could trust with their protection.

“I’ll take her in for a few days,” you stated.

You probably grew a second head with the kind of looks they were giving you.

“ほんとう? Are you sure?” Nunotaba asked, “It would be a lot of trouble, and not just from raising a child.”

“Then we just have to make sure Level 6 Shift really goes under,” you replied.

“Do you know what you are saying dear?” Asuka was genuinely worried, “I do not see how we could even stop such an experiment, short of killing the first ranked Level 5.”

“そう, while the Railgun thinks she has triumphed in taking out all those facilities, Nokleben has already split up and distributed the work among even more facilities. むり, there is no way we can shut down all those facilities in a timely manner.”

“Does she even matter to begin with?” you wondered, “I know she’s the 20001st clone but what significance does she really have?

Nunotaba as well lapsed in to thought.

“My question is rather, why do you care dear?” Asuka asked, “Do you fancy yourself a good Samaritan or is it because you have those kinds of proclivities?”

You were pretty sure you weren’t a paedophile, least of all when it was a clone of Sparky, or so you hoped.

“I made the call to take her,” you replied, “She’s my responsibility.”

“I suppose such an attitude is commendable,” Asuka conceded, “It shall be great practice for you.”

You’re not sure how to reply to that.

Well, I guess all that needs to happen is restructuring how advancements work for TK.

Make a list of improvement attributes that we can work towards. Every time we do something that works towards it, tally it and add it in before the start of the next thread.

Make it so that books give a little bit of xp every hour we spend reading them but then give a little bit more upon completion to represent a fuller understanding of the topic. They'd still have the set number of hours to spend on the books until completion so that we couldn't just sit there and say to read the same book over and over.

Other than books, classes, and the other obvious things like spending all day erryday brain-lifting, I guess you could have nearly anything count as TK-improvement-relevant granted that the players can come up with a half-decent justification. Esper abilities are supposed to be all about deluding yourself into thinking that you can bend reality so hard that it actually happens.

As for what you'd actually set the progression costs at, well I guess that's up to you. Really all depends on how much you'd be giving away from other stuff. Main point is that gaining xp purely from ignoring plothooks and npcs and things that are happening all around you is generally a crummy way to do things.

I don't really know what else to say on it, and I know that this is mostly just repeating the earlier post, so if you had any thoughts, that'd be cool.

As you may or may not know/remember, I am not one for too much mechanics/char sheet kinda guy in my quests. However, with the all the small stuff that we do I gotta keep track of it all somehow. Like hell does anyone remember that we actually can climb stuff rather fast?

But back to the main point of character progression, I agree that books are a backward ass way to progress given that you just get filler posts for some kind of power increase. Originally I intended it to be an integral part of the quest but I didn’t think too far beyond, “you finish X Book and you get Y Ability improvement.” While it makes sense for them to give you an IC theoretical grounding for the Ability improvement, theory often doesn’t translate well to practical. So what does this mean going forward?

One, I’ll still keep the books, something a theoretical inspiration and some kind of artificial way to advance. You may not notice but I clearly struggle writing the “waiting” portions of the quests and books are a great way to pass the time. I’m still undecided on timeskips, due to the time scale involved in ACACQ. Your thoughts on this matter would be appreciated. Two, I’ll add be adding XP and progression for you simply doing things, but I probably won’t be retroactively awarding XP. It’ll burden me to come up with certain puzzles and burden you with actually being creative with Kyril’s powers. But otherwise, doing some things will grant you some kind of experience in some way.

The big question is should I hide this kind of mechanical progression from you or not?

I honestly prefer to keep things narrative but at the same time there are clear/fuzzy limits on what Kyril can, and cannot, do. Mind I’ll still be spending Friday night doing overhauls and checkpoints (because we stole LO) so that's the earliest I can to figure it all out.
>>
>>32578996
Hiding the XP gains would be best as it would prevent people from obsessing from numerical gains.
As to the subject of timeskips, I personally would not care for them. Some downtime would be preferable to having progression be made without input.
>>
>>32578996
Time skips are probably bad. This series is probably tightly scheduled as it is. Hiding XP gains is probably for the best too, otherwise /tg/ will lose control.

Kyril has two free plane tickets yes? Perhaps go visit Teacher for training/spirit vision quest/ opening chakras meditation mysticism to help Kyril's spirit/state mind/brain BS to help make him a better epser? Does that sound plausible? It sounded better in my head... and I basically just stole that last one from ATLA
i also second hiding the stats. it would help dissuade meta gaming
>>
>>32578996
>The big question is should I hide this kind of mechanical progression from you or not?
It's not a black and white thing between total transparency and total obfuscation. You can keep it on some sort of middle ground with some crunch revealed and some things not.

If you're not going to say "You got X xp because you did a,b,c,d,e,f,g actions!" at the end of the threads or as the actions happen, then you'll need to make it obvious in the narrative when powerups happen and be willing to at least say yes or no when someone asks "did we git gud?".

As for timeskips, well it depends on how long they'll be. One of my main problems with quest timeskips is that QMs will absolutely refuse to allow the mc to advance a reasonable amount over them. I've seen tons of quests where there's a timeskip and the actions selected are "hardcore training" and then the mc makes progression equivalent to about a day's worth of playing it out.
On the other hand, I get where they're coming from. You can't just powerup the mc out of nowhere like that because it feels cheap and fucks with already set up encounters. Though I think this quest it would be reasonable since espers seem to plateau sometimes and maybe he's just making slow progress with the books or something, the entirety of Raildex takes place over a really short span of time. It's been, what, a few months in-universe from the start to the current place?
>>
>>32579227
Kyril could find Jesus and go on a spirit quest to become closer to him.
>>
>>32578996
Giving appropriate XP for using powers is a good way to go and keeping them hidden is a must. If we want to know Kyril's limits, we can always experiment.
As mentioned before, there isn't much time to skip so timeskips are unnecessary.
