This is my first quest, so the format will probably evolve as it goes. I posted a “teaser” yesterday to see if people were interested and there was enough positive feedback that I decided to start. This is also the first time I have really written since high school, so there will be mistakes. I will try to improve my prose and grammar as I go along. Here is a link to the “teaser”: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/32539286/

Themes: Evil Overlord, tactical and strategic violence, exploration, empire building, and smut(probably)

Dice: 1d100, high is better

And GO:

The first thing you understand is a sense of incredible loss. It utterly consumes you, blocking out all other sensation or understanding. Slowly other thoughts and feelings begin to enter your mind.

You first begin to question what you feel. You don’t understand what has happened nor why, but you feel that you should. Things have changed from how they once were, from how they should be, to this.

It starts slow at first, but at an ever increasing pace understand begins to flow into you. Thoughts, emotions, knowledge and desires begin to exist in your mind for what seems like the first time. It overwhelms you at first, then begins to subside as the chaos settles into order. Again you notice the smallness of it all, how little you possess. You don’t know what your understanding is “little” compared to, yet the feeling refuses to leave. You have lost so much that you can’t even comprehend.

You are still remembering though. Little things. Plants grow in soil, walking is different than running, sounds are vibrations through the air, light is…is…something real, yet not. All of these things, seemingly obvious and inherent come to you one after the other. Eventually it stops, you feel normal, and you you begin to doubt that these things were ever unknown to you at all.

You feel like there is more, just outside of your understanding yet so close. You strain your mind grasping for it, and it comes to you in a second assault of feelings and thoughts.

You know:
>1: The secrets of the artificial world. (Unlocks level 1 and 2 Technology)
>2: The potential inside of yourself. (Unlocks level 1 and 2 Biology)
>3: The principles of reality. (Unlocks level 1 and 2 Magic)

>vote for one or two, with the one you prefer most first. If the “first choice” votes are scattered and the “second choice” votes are consistent I will go with the second choice. I will answer questions as much as I can.

Weak, strong, electric, gravity. These things come to you almost instantly. Every interaction in reality is governed by these 4 simple forces. Yet one is so much weaker than all of the others. The entire planet grasping at you is held off by the strength of your legs and feet. Why one is so negligible compared to the others? As understanding dawns on you realize that it isn't at all. It simply requires will to achieve its full potential. Every piece of the universe is pulling on every other little piece, and a slight change in this web of connection can change everything.

This knowledge flows over you, again overwhelming you. Time passes and you don’t even notice. Slowly you start to perceive the world around you. You are laying in a meadow. You can hear the sound of flowing water nearby and the songs of birds. The sun is at its highest point in the sky. There are no clouds.

You begin to stand up. It feels as if this is the first time you have ever done this, yet it comes naturally to you. The grass is tall, up to your chest, but as you finish standing you look over it and look at your surroundings. You see mountains ahead of you off in the distance, and a small city build at their base. In the other direction is a forest. A small village is off to your right and the valley stretches off to the left for many miles.

Where, why, and how remain unknown to you, yet with determination you head
>forward, toward the city at the base of the mountains
>back, toward the forest behind you
>right, toward the small town.
>left, across the plains.

>>
>>32555383
>right, toward the small town.
>>
>>32555383
You turn to your left and set out across the plains. The ground is rough under your feet, and you realize that you are naked. You ponder this as you walk. Clothes, roofs, doors, walls…All the things that the mortals make to protect themselves from the world. You remember what you saw before you began your short journey. The town and city were built by humans. They band together for strength, then destroy other bands for resources or safety. Simple, short memories and thoughts tell them that what is unknown is dangerous and what is dangerous is to be destroyed. These thoughts surprise you with the amount of emotion attached to them. Humans, creatures with bodies such as your own, elicit a powerful sense of anger? Displeasure? Disgust? You don’t yet understand this, but you feel that you will in time.

These thoughts turn yourself to focus not on your environment, but yourself. You are human. You are walking barefoot through a meadow. You begin to feel a sensation and recognize it as pain. Pain coming from your feet. You look down and see blood. There is a small sharp stone embedded in the inside arch of your left foot. You bend down to remove it, only to cause more blood to flow. You freeze the blood as it exits the wound, instantly stopping the flow and forming a scab.

You realize that this whole time more and more knowledge has been flowing into you. No revelations such as remembering magic have come, but little important details are returning to you. You realize that you are naked, with no clotting or weapons. This is not concerning, as your power is more than adequate to protect you, but other matters are pressing. Hunger and thirst.

You kill an overflying bird by freezing its lungs, then cook it before eating it. You should have drank from the stream before you left it behind…No, you should have boiled the water and then drank. The order that these “rules” are being remembered by your mind is frustrating you.

You begin to re-evaluate your circumstances. You have walked for less than 10 miles, and the city against the mountain is still visible. It is a very long distance away, and would require several days to reach it. The small town is hidden behind a small hill you crossed several hours ago, but the forest also still visible. You are conflicted on what to do. Motivation. The word sticks in your head…Why are you walking to the open planes?

Why?

More frustration comes as you are unable to answer it.

Your concentration is broken buy a sound. You realize now that you have been feeling the presence of them for about a minute now, but you did not understand what that meant until now. Three horsemen are behind you, galloping toward you are a steady rate. Fleeing will fail as they are on horses, and you are walking on aching feet. You realize a confrontation is inevitable, so you stop walking and face them as they approach.
>(2/3)
>>
>>32556112
The three of them are riding in formation, with the leader in the middle and the two followers twenty feet back and away from him. They are wearing a straw cape that covers their shoulders and back. They have simple leather pants and shirts, and are wearing no head coverings. The horses are small and unarmored. Capable of covering long distances with little food and water, but unsuitable for war. They are carrying spears, and each have a bow and a quiver full of arrows attached to the horses’ saddle.

The leader stops about thirty feet in front of you, while his two followers ride in a flanking maneuver behind you. They form a triangle with spears in hand, with you at the middle. The leader stares at you, seemingly unsure about what to do. The followers look at him, waiting. At this distance you can see their faces clearly. Their skin is darker than yours, and their eyes are all brown. The leader has facial tattoos that signify rank or importance. His clothing is also of higher quality that the two followers and his spear is longer, with a metal tip.

“What are you?” he yells at you, overcoming the sound of the wind with his voice. His eyes lock on to yours, challenging you.

Language. You are briefly stunned as the knowledge is remembered. Then comes the anger. This human speaks to you as if you are below him. As if you need to answer his questions and justify yourself to him. He believes that his weapons and his allies grant him power over you. This infuriates you. You know that the authority and power is yours alone to wield.

>Kill him but leave his followers alive, demand their obedience.

OP, you have my interest.

We haven't had a good evil Overlord quest in a long time, and you seem unusually prepared for a first time DM.
>>
>>32556518
You wait. You do not understand this yet, and nothing is lost by letting the human act first. He stares at you, anger growing on his face.

“Speak!” He yells, gripping his spear more tightly. His left hand moves in a strange way for a second, and the two followers attach their spears to their saddles and draw their bows. He was sending a signal to them, suggesting that he will try to kill you with ranged weapons. His frustration and anger are apparent, but so is confusion and fear. He doesn’t know what to do.
“These are our lands, you have no blessing to be here. Explain your trespass or die.” He says more quietly, unsure now.

You simply stand, facing him, your eyes locked on to his. He trots in a small circle on his horse, then rides slowly up to you, pointing his spear at your chest the entire time. He has decided to approach you after all. He deserves no explanation from you, and appears unwilling to offer one for himself. The two followers notch arrows to their bows, still staring at their leader, waiting for a command.

His frustration overpowers his uncertainty, and you see the trace of fear in his face replaced with anger. He yells, kicks his horse forward, brings his spear back to thrust, and screams as the muscle and flesh from his forearm to his wrist is reduced to ash. You freeze the air between you and the two followers solid, and their arrows shatter upon your shields. The man’s spear harmlessly falls to the ground, but his horse is still coming forward, and you kill it instantly with a flash of lightning.

“DEAMMO” the man starts to yell as his horse falls from under him. You turn his yell into unintelligible screams as the boils off of his face and chest, killing him quickly.

They are stunned. Not only is what you did to their leader impossible, but you didn’t even move to do it. Once they begin to comprehend what has happened the fear begins to set in. One of them starts reaching for another arrow, while the other turns his horse to flee. You kill the horse out from under the fleeing one by again, burning off its chest and destroying its lungs. It falls and the rider falls with it. The arrow didn’t work the first time and it doesn’t work the second. You discourage further attempts by burning the string on the bow.

You speak for the first time while staring at the one still on the horse: “Obey me, or suffer and die.”

The followers are obviously less formidable than their leader, and you can see the conflict in the eyes of the still-riding rider. You have utterly slain his leader and easily stopped the other follower from fleeing, allowing no other options to him that the two you spoke. You see him slowly reach for his spear, detach it from his saddle, and toss it into the grass away from his horse. He slowly dismounts, walks two steps toward you and then falls to his knees with a blank look in his eyes.

You sense the trace of magic in the rider that fled rapidly approaching you. He begins to scream as he runs, tears streaming down his face. You turn to face him and freeze his knee as he sprints at you. It shatters with his next step and he falls to the ground, his hand still clutching his spear. The pain has not hit him yet, and he looks at you with confusion. You take your time killing him. You burn out his eyes, blinding him, then burn away the flesh from his hands as he clutches at his face.
>>
>>32557994
You realize something as you watch him scream and thrash on the ground. This feels good. This feels powerful. You felt it too when you killed the leader, but less so. You begin to notice it then. The minuscule amounts of magic that the man’s body possesses is being drained, and it is flowing into you. What he possesses isn’t even a fraction of your power, yet the act of taking that mote of magic from his tortured body is changing something in you. There are still trace amounts of magic in leaders body, yet it is draining away and not into you.

>gain 1 level

With the last scrap of magic extracted from the writing body on the ground, you quickly kill it with a flash of lightning. You then turn to the last rider, the one kneeling in the field facing you, his eyes unfocused and face blank. His horse has run away, probably from smelling the scent of death and fire in the air.

As you approach the rider, you can hear him speaking quietly. “god is my shield, god will protect my soul and body and grant me victory over the unclean. God is my shield, god will protect my sould…” Over and over quietly to himself. Something seems wrong with his voice as you approach. As you get closer you realize why.

Woman. Female, birth, age, lifespan, family, brother, sister, mother, father. The other two riders were males, and possibly her family.

You walk up and stand in front of her. She keeps repeating her chant, her eyes unfocused and her face blank. You bend over, and grip her hair with your hand and pull her head back until she is looking directly at you. Her eyes slowly focus on your face, as her chant grows quieter and quieter.

“I am your god” you say to her. Her eyes slightly twitch. But she remains motionless, kneeling with her hands limp at her sides

“Stand up” you command, letting go of her jaw. Her head limply flops down to where it was before, and you wait. With your patience running thin, you begin to consider harvesting her magic. She has little, but the little that you have collected from the other two humans has already unlocked potential in you. You are just about so start burning her flesh off when she twitches and speaks.

“You are God” she says, almost inaudible. Her head slowly coming up to look at you again. “You are God” she repeats louder, still almost a whisper. “You are…you……You are God” she says finally. She is still quiet, but the tone of her voice and the way she slightly moves her head when speaking shows you that she believes it. Her eyes finally focus on yours, then open in fear as she brings her head down to the dirt, bowing before you. She becomes more and more animated as what you assume was shock wears off. She remains prostrated before you, her body trembling.

“Stand. Call your horse. Wait.” You say to her as you walk back to the two bodies smoldering in the sun. The younger one’s clothing is still intact, apart from blood stains on the sleeves and around the neck. You take and done his clothing, wrapping the grass cape over your head to protect yourself from the sun.

She makes a loud whistling noise with her fingers in her mouth, calling her horse back to her. You can see the horse off in the distance, staring in your direction but not coming closer. After trying several times she approaches you timidly with her head bowed.
>>
>>32559291
“Lord” she starts timidly, pausing, ”my horse is refusing to come near. The smell of…of death is keeping her away”

You stand up, having clothed yourself and put the leather sandals on your feet. “Go collect her, and bring her to me” you say. Your feet ache and you don’t want to walk any further, and this will give you some time to analyze and collect your thoughts.

You watch her jog toward her horse off in the distance. After a few seconds you sit and focus on the small amount of magic you have collected from the two males. It is becoming easier and easier to think. The confusion of earlier is almost completely gone.

If you don't mind exerting yourself constantly to hold it in the air, magic 3 allows you to exert forces on objects. Magic is by far the most individually powerful of the 3, but it can not create lasting effects.

Tech 3 would allow you to create airships with pseudo-infinite fuel reserves, and once created they will not drain your power while flying. Tech is the most useful from an "build an army and fortress" side. It's very salable but doesn't offer you any personal inherent power like biology or magic do.

>>32559498
eh...not really. Mostly tougher and stronger. all of the level 1 abilities aren't that special, but they are really cheap. Plus keep in mind, you are a normal human body with super magic powers...If you aren't paying attention or slip up you could die. The character in the smut intro I wrote(link in OP) had biology 2 and was using tech 2 level machinery on the assassin. Honestly, tech just offends my sense of aesthetics. I like the sword and sorcery feel we have going on right now and have no interest in abandoning it for guns and nukes.
>>
>>32559601
They give a slight drain. you can create them out of the ground/whatever you have lying around, and they are very strong, but they are not permanent and using them as guards or for long duration sieges is not practical.

Magic can create an army in about an hour, but the army will only last a few hours and then you will ether seriously start straining yourself.

Tech armies are much less mobile and require a great deal of logistics...but from what you have seen from the world so far a tech 2 army would be incredibly powerful, and tech 3 UN-stoppable.

Biology armies are the "weakest" of the 3, but basically build and maintain themselves. They require no logistical support or infrastructure.

>>32559642
I was thinking of more 40K style tech, and not the super future style. The examples in the image are mostly from a "power level" perspective and not an "aesthetics" perspective.

Might want to rename things Magitech then. Exalted Style massive swords and armor, Warstriders and airships, to flying cities with weapons of doom. Right now things seem very "kitchen sinky." Having a unified set of aesthetics will help the world maintain coherency.

Honestly, I probably shouldn't give input as it should be your guy's decision, but i'm going to anyways. Due to how you buy powers, getting Bio 1+2 costs the same as getting magic 3. So from a "bang for your buck" perspective you would level all three powers equally. Then again, if you have BIO 3 TECH 3 and MAGIC 2, then for the same cost someone else could have MAGIC 5, teleport to you and throw your soul into a black hole. You will need to balance utility with vertical power achievement, as higher level tiers shit all over lower level tiers, while at the same time the low level powers are cheap and nice to have.

you know it.

Good idea. I thin i'll rename them to Technomancy, Biomancy, and ....uhh...Mancymancy? I need a name for the third one.
>>
>>32559854
Guess best path is to hold off on tech, max magic quickly with a bit of bio for regen, and then complete bio and tech.
>>
>>32559854
>Good idea. I thin i'll rename them to Technomancy, Biomancy, and ....uhh...Mancymancy? I need a name for the third one.
This idea just got worse. Lets stick with the originals.

Sorcery
>>
>>32559886
I'd say grab Tech 1. It'll keep our armies from dieing so easily, and help protect us until we are an un-killable god.
>>
>>32559854
Thaumaturgy?
Sorcery?
>>
>>32559886
Best path is probably to just 1-dip bio then tech because they are cheap and offer solid goodies. Then we should probably go vertical for Magic 3
>>
>>32559854
>>32559914
Yeah, I don't think there's any reason to rename the trees. Just the descriptions for the levels.
>>
>>32559886
Or get people to handle the BIO and tech trees. We don't have to do everything ourselves/
>>
>>32559920
>armies
What army? We don't have one and can currently get rekt by some farmer that hits us from behind. Biology will allow us not to get stomped easily by someone who isn't a retard
>>
>>32559362
Bio 1 now.
>>
>>32559886
eh...."maxing magic" will not happen quickly. You got 1 level from torturing 1 guy to death but it won't always be that easy. The more you collect the more you need to level. In the smut intro the MC had hundreds of machines torturing hundreds of people to insanity 24/7 and was only making moderate progress to the next level.
>>
>>32559854

You can call the magic category "High Magic" or maybe "Elementalism"
>>
>>32559956
I didn't say now. I meant, before we maxed out Magic.

No renaming please. That doesn't help.

That's rather confusing, since you said at 22:00, when its already 23:45, over here.

And, I honestly don't see why you'd put it off, we seem to have all the discussion we're going to have.

I think.

Timezones pls.

When he says 22:00 it looks like over an hour to me.
>>
>>32560121
Exactly. only posts that contain nothing but a number AND are posted between 22:00 and 22:05 will count.

>That's rather confusing, since you said at 22:00, when its already 23:45, over here.
How hard is it to come to the conclusion that you might not be in the same timezone and that it would be at the start of the next hour?
>>
>>32560150
Oh fuck. Well...when it gets to ??:00, which is in about 10 minutes, voting will start.
>>

how many minutes later is this?

I don't think we're in the same timezone.

>>32560160
Not very, I admit. But when I'm tired and planning to go to bed in five minutes, its becomes a rather confusing statement.
>>
>>32560182

>>
>>32560175
Time-delayed voting is a great way to wreck a quest, btw.

People don't get excited about waiting 20 min to vote then another 5-10 min for post then another 20 or so min before they can vote.
>>
>>32560194
I think it's just because we're at the end here
>>
>>32560188
Go to sleep. I should too.
>>32560194
Not in the first thread with not much of a playerbase.
>>
>>32560194
I'd be more okay with it myself, if we hadn't already had quite a bit of discussion on the topic already. If it was '10-20 minutes after the story post' that'd be less annoying.
>>
>>32560207
That's it. I'm all written out. I will stay and answer questions if people have them though.

>>32560222
I probably won't do a delayed vote again.
>>
>>32560217
First thread in a quest always has a big player base. Reach 10th thread and new people stop showing up (too much archive) while old people get tired of it.
>>
>>32560245
10th? Even 2nd or 3rd it's happening.

BIO won, 3 to 1. I'll stick around to answer any question, and I had a few of my own:

How was the timing between posts? I'm worried i'm posting too slowly yet I still want to include all of the details.

A lot of quests tend to have dwindling participation especially as the go on. Why do you think this is and how can i avoid it?

>How was the timing between posts?
Too slow.

>Why do you think this is
What >>32560245 said.

>how can i avoid it?
Avoid having a plot. That way people don't need to keep track of the story.
>>
>>32560473
>A lot of quests tend to have dwindling participation especially as the go on
I believe they have more of a small playerbase early on. Not everyone is on /tg/ the specific hour(s) during a specific day a thread is going for the first time. Of course there are people in the first thread just to test it out and see how it'll be, they leave if they don't like it. So, just keep going and see how things end up is all I can say.
>>32560505

>>
>>32560473

Your posting was slow, but your writing was good. You don't need each update post to be beautifully crafted - instead, make the really important posts the ones that shine, and pre-write everything to speed things along.

>>32560505

Ignore what this guy said about not having a plot. The best quests on /tg/ have a clearly defined plot and plot advancement, and have an additional property in keeping out the lazy retards who only want to jack off to recycled /u/boat material.

Don't take it too hard if this quest doesn't take off. It can take a couple tries before you hit on a winning combination.
>>
>>32560473
>how can i avoid it?
Post more in a single thread.

This hasn't been a quest. We set up the character and then nothing happened. Good way to lose player interest
>>
>>32560473
>how can i avoid it?
Make it like them monster of the week cartoons.

That way everyone feels like they could drop in any time.
>>
>>32560639
yeah this was super short
>>
>>32560652
>That way everyone feels like they could drop in any time.
Worst opinion when it comes to questing. People can read the fucking archives.
>>
>>32560686
>People can read the fucking archives.
And they can choose not to.

If your question is "how do I make people feel like they can drop in any time" then making them read the archives is a good way to discourage them.
>>
>>32560711
>If your question is "how do I make people feel like they can drop in any time"
It isn't.
>>
>>32560745
Well fuck you then.
>>
It was kind of short, and I didn't have anything pre-written at all. I'll work on being more prepared for next time.
>>
>>32560819
Don't be afraid to have a small group of four or five regulars OP. If you try to please everyone for the sake of a large playerbase, you'll end up with infighting and a loss of focus. If a bunch of people stay dedicated, great, but don't sacrifice the integrity of the quest solely to bring in fringe viewers. As to keeping old players interested, just keep putting out the product they came for in the first place. If you've got time I'd recommend House and Dominion on the archive, it's a good example of a quedt witb a long-term following - draw conclusions from that as you will. Also take all advice from your players with a grain of salt, it tends to be self-serving.

I enjoyed tonight a lot though, even with the short run time. You can count me in for sure next week!
>>
>>32554516
Oh hey I was looking for this.
>>

>>
>>32561930
I think I might go with this. Due to my work schedule the longest I will be able to do a quest during the week will be 6 hours, and that will cut into sleep and food. I'll have things pre-written for next week and compare it to this week to see which one I like more. Pre-writing will make the posts faster and longer...but will mean fewer quests per week.

We will see. We are in the "experiment phase" right now, and I haven't really settled on a format and the first few threads will each be done differently.

>>
>>32572253
I read the first few chapters and I like the format. His posts are short and fast, without much description but the keep the quest engaging. I may try that style for THREAD 2.

What are the merits of giving specific options vs. just asking "what do you do?" Most quests that I have seen give several options.
>>
>>32574044
/tg/ posters are shitty lazy people
not giving premade options forces them to come up with something rather than pick from a list, and a bunch of people clam up and don't post when that happens.
>>
>>32574044
It also start the quest with a clear goal to achieve not just go around conquering stuff.
>>
>>32574155
Semi-open is better. Give a list of options and add [write-in].
>>
>>32576954
Are you really distinguishing something so obvious, or are you just being an annoying jackass who bumps this once it reaches page 10?
>>
>>32577062
This is my first time running a quest. I really appreciate when people point out things that are "obvious" to others because It's probably new to me.
>>
>>32577062
For a new QM, yes.

There's a difference between "pick one of four options", "pick one of four or write in", and "write in."

The first one feels too restrictive. The last one is too open-ended.
>>
>>32579979
You really are waiting until this hits page 10 to reply and bump it.

>>32580064
