Ok, just as a heads up. If you follow the twitter, you already know I'm planning on running longer than usual today, because this thread... kiiiind of got out of hand in the planning and outline section, and I was really loathe to chop it back. You guys will probably get less time to vote than you're used to- figure on only having 10-15 minutes to vote. Like I said, lot of stuff.

Archives here:

And there's a pastebin character sheet writeup here if you don't want to muck about with the full archive dive:

“So she selected the Highlands range?” You ask, looking at the weather printout and the range map one more time- Katya headed down to the hangar a while ago, but you're not scheduled over the complex for another couple hours yet. “Kind of surprised. Figured she'd want as much open air as possible.”

“She was in Afghanistan, dingus.” Mav replies, sipping on her can of Coke- you don't honestly know how she drinks as many of those as she does without ballooning up, but you figure it's got to do with magic. “Mountains are kind of her thing.”

“Lousy terrain for observers though.” You respond, looking over the map. “Powers will probably have the only uninterrupted visibility, assuming the clouds don't fuck it up. Hell, even the AWACS is going to have problems if it gets down in the mountains.”

Mav shrugs. “Nobody seems to think it's gonna be a problem.” She says. “So you're kind of on your own.”

“Nah, it's fine. It's just weird.” You say. “You think she's stacking the odds in her favor?”

Mav looks at you like you're about as dumb as a brick. “After the way you spanked Young? Yeah, I can't imagine why she'd do that at all.”

1/2
>>
You throw an eraser at her forehead- it bounces off a tiny shield and mav grins when you stick your tongue out at her.

“Yeah, you just be careful, I might take you up on that one of these days.” She says, laughing.

“But why waste your time with him, Patticakes?” Young's voice says from the door. “ 'Sup smalltime. They wanted me to come check up on you. How come every time I find you, there's a good looking witch around you?”

“Oh, you know me.” You say, somewhat dryly. “I'm just catnip for the witchfolk.”

“Entirely.” She says, walking around the table, letting one hand run along Mav's back as she does so. “And I never thought you'd go for his type, Patticakes. You certainly had better taste in Kure.” Mav's response- if it can be called that- is to freeze up at the contact, her cheeks turning a bit pink.

You quirk an eyebrow at that.

[x] “Something I should know about?”

You look at the two witches for a minute, before grinning. “Something I should know about?”

Mav shakes her head, but Young just returns your grin. “Just a couple amazing nights in Kure a while back.”

You nod, remembering the Saratoga having made a port call to the base there during a pacific cruise early in your career- you were aboard most of the port call, your fighter at the time having been grounded for multiple failures in the powerplants and multiple, unexpected stress failures in it's skin and structure. At the time, you'd assumed it had something to do with the relative age of the tomcat, but these days you're pretty sure it had something to do with you.

“Yeah, what of it?” You ask, already pretty sure you know the answer.

GOOD GOD FRANK!
>>
“Me and Patticakes met at one of the clubs there.” Young says. “I don't want to go into too much detail, but-”

“Please don't.” You say. “I got enough of that out of my RIO at the time. Well, and her.”

Young just grins wider, pulling Mav's chair out and walking around to sit on her lap.

“But what the hell were you doing in Kure, anyway?” You ask. “You're luftwaffe, not kreigsmarine, and even if you were Kreigsmarine, they're not exactly noted for cruising around the pacific.”

“Visiting family friends.” She says, looking down at your maps.

“Fair enough. You know, if you want some privacy, I can leave.” You point out. “Not that I've got a problem with the idea, but I get the feeling you two would be distracting as hell if you started getting lewd right here on the kitchen table.”

Young laughs, standing up. “I'll behave. For now. Besides, right here?” She laughs again. “We'd attract a crowd. You'll be ready to go on time?”

You nod. “Yeah, no sweat.”

“Good. I'd be disappointed in you if lost this time around, smalltime.” She responds. “See to it that you don't.” She says the last as she walks out of the open kitchen door and around the corner, out of sight.

Mav's blush still hasn't gone down.

“How did the-”

“Nope.”

“Strudel taste down there?”

“Oh for-” She shakes her head, choking back a laugh. Her blush gets worse. “Do you really want an answer, or are you just doing that?”

“I'll pass on the answer.” You say. “There. Well, good to go here. Let's go up and get this shit filed with Ice.”

“Go ahead. I've got to go find Goose and take care of some other shit. See you in the air.” She says, tossing her empty can into the trash and getting another.

“Yeah, well don't be late.” You respond, folding up the maps- which are unnecessary in the air and have to stay in the castle regardless, and grabbing the rest of the paperwork.

“Me, late. Yeah, good joke.” She says.

“I do seem to recall an incident with Rick-” You say with a shit eating grin.

“You- wow. You remember that?” She asks, pausing.

You nod. “Like I'd forget the best chance to give my friends shit that ever came along. Almost a shame it wasn't real, I'd be able to make all sorts of jokes about mothers.”

“You wouldn't.” She says, then looks at you. “You would. Hell, I would. Whatever. See you in the air, Frank.”

Ice's office is open and unoccupied- you've no idea where the boss has managed to get off to. Still, you drop your papers on her desk- she'll have to file them later, but they're where they're supposed to be and that's the best you can do. Wendy walks in as you're headed out, a carrying a serving tray with tea and some biscuts- not much, but it's something.

“Oh, I though-” She starts, then stops. “I'm sorry. Would you like some tea, sir?”

“Wendy, what did I say about calling me sir?” You respond. “And sure, though why are you acting like a house servant? Aren't you flying chase this round?”

She shakes her head. “The matrons asked if I would give up the strikers I'm using while mine are down so that Gabriella could observe.”

“And you agreed?” You ask. She shrugs, noncommittally.

[x] “So they didn't ask.”

“So they didn't ask.” You state flatly. Wendy shakes her head.

You nod, chewing on the inside of your cheek in an effort to help channel the sudden spike of anger. “Very fucking well. Flight Lieutenant, put the serving tray down and come with me.” You order, heading out of the office and up to your quarters at a brisk pace. You stop there long enough to grab your flight bag- not that there's much in it, but you need it anyway.

From there, you head down to life support, getting geared up and suited in what, to you, is record time, almost. Dropping your helmet in the bag and double checking your locker for anything left behind, you motion to Wendy to follow you as you head down to the hangar.

“Wendy, we really have to work on this.” You say, opening the door to the ladderwell and starting down. “You're one of us now, and we'll back you up if you tell people no.”

“W-well, they said that it'd look real good if I helped out....” She says, hesitating.

“Sure. But you'd rather fly, wouldn't you?” You point out. “Besides that, we'd really rather Gabriella didn't blow a pair of strikers she's borrowing from us, and you need the air time. Ice said she's been using it to help you work on some of the things you're rusty on?”

...you don't suppose the matrons weren't the ones who told her, do you? That maybe Gabriella got a lead on a pushover witch and went and demanded them herself?

Because if she did I think she's earned a one-way ticket out of the castle.
>>
“I-I hope you don't mind-” She starts.

“No, not at all, and that's the problem. None of us mind, and if anyone does, we'll handle them.” You say. “Or we'll help you when you handle them. This one is a freebie though.”

You stroll into the hangar, making a beeline for the rack holding Wendy's borrowed tomcat strikers- they were her first choice, and you're happy that they were, still feeling closer kinship to Tomcat witches than ones flying hornets. Gabriella is busily talking with the crew, sitting on the edge of the striker rack, a pair of older witches nearby.

Kenji stands nearby, looking kind of helpless, watching as Gabreilla strips off her shoes and socks.

I hate myself for falling into pay to play bullshit, but I splurged on the unlimited campaign ticket and some fuel and have been pretty happy with it. It feels like a proper Ace Combat again and the multiplayer is actually quite fun.

[x] “Woah there, witchypants. The fuck do you think you're doing?” ( Address Gabriella directly)

“Woah there, witchypants.” You bark, striding towards the Striker stand, causing Gabriella to freeze in place and the two matrons to turn around. “Just what the Fuck do you think you are doing?”

“Commander Bishop-” one of them starts, and you hold up a finger. “Not now.” You look at Gabreilla again. “You didn't answer.”

“I was told-” She starts, looking surprised and maybe a bit betrayed.

You half turn, keeping your eyes on the Matrons and the Italian Witch on the striker stand. “Flight Lieutenant, did you give these witches permission to use those strikers?”

Wendy looks torn- she clearly wants to please the matrons in front of her, but You're far more immediate- and look far, far angrier than she's apparently willing to deal with. “N-no” She almost whispers, her voice sounding strained.

You nod. “I didn't think so. Get suited up for flight, Lieutenant. You're on Ice's wing.” You order, then look back up at Gabriella. “You. Get down.”

She nods. “I-I'm sorry, I-”

“I don't care.” You cut her off, looking down at the matrons. “When did this seem like it was a good idea?”

>filthy gaijin only folding steel one thousand times
Real katana sharp strikers have steel folded over one million times.
>>
“Commander Bishop, this is between witches.” One of them starts, her voice full of indignation. “I expected even you to-”

“No, see, this is internal squadron business. Those strikers aren't Flight Lieutenant Maloney's, they're property of the US Navy and VF-3. Her strikers were gutted by the RAF witches because they're a pack of spiteful cunts that fell over themselves to villanize one of their senior officers after he made enemies with some war heros fifty years ago.” You snarl.

“Gabriella needs the flight time-” The other says, her accent marking her as Italian too, though you don't recognize her- she could be a new arrival, or just passing through, it's honestly hard to tell. “Your Wendy isn't slated to fly against you at all, the capitanio is.”

“The Capitano blew her chance, and last I heard the rematch hasn't been scheduled.” You point out. “And either way, she's not flying in those strikers today, both because they're tomcats, not starfighters, and we can't wait out an acclimatization period and because I want the flight lieutenant in the air today.”

“You should be careful, Lieutenant commander.” She says. “You're making enemies here.”

You shrug. “Like I give a shit. Should I take this to Brigette?” You ask, indicating the SEAL witch across the hangar. She's been watching the whole exchange and nods when you point at her, her face displaying no emotion. “She's here specifically as a security element, and doesn't answer to even Matron O'hare. Do we need to get her involved in this kind of bullshit?”

“We would prefer not to.” The Italian matron says, after a second, pausing to think.

>>
“So would I.” You say, flatly, noting Wendy's joined you now, her wrist MFD and Headband HUD already on, her Beret stowed in a shirt pocket. You indicate the striker stand with your head. “Get mounted up, start up your preflights.” You order.

The matrons, knowing they lost- and taking a lesson from the few stories of your temper- and how you, too, can hold a grudge, at least have the decency to look sorry. Finally, one of them speaks. “Lieutenant commander, if it means anything, we're sorry. We took advantage of your witch's nature to get Gabriella more flight time. We were hoping she could use it to refine her tactics so we wouldn't have a repeat of the last time.”

BUT MATRONS

I CAN FEEL THE RAGE INSIDE... CHANGING ME
>>
[x] “Apology accepted, but that shit doesn't happen, to Wendy especially.”

You look at them a second before nodding. “Apology accepted, but that shit doesn't happen around here. Especially not to the squadron.” You say, before turning to look at Gabriella- who's dismounted the striker rack and is standing behind the two matrons.

“Capitano Lucchini, I'm looking forward to our rematch.” You say, grinning and holding out a hand. She accepts the handshake in the spirit it's offered- as a conciliatory gesture. “If we had more spare strikers, I'd see about getting you airborne in those, but-”

She nods. “No problem.” She says, her accent lighter than you expected- and her English surprisingly good. “I shouldn't have pushed those old strikers so hard anyway, it was my fault.”

You laugh, shrugging. “Would you believe me if I said I know the feeling?”

“It's only a shame, not much going on in here when everybody's in the air.” She continues. “Maybe your ground crew could use a hand? I like working on engines.”

You shrug. “You'd have to ask the hangar boss back there.” You say, indicating Kenji, “but I can't imagine him saying no.”

She nods, and the three of them head off as Wendy slips her legs into the strikers, disappearing to about mid-thigh in the interface. “You ready to go up there?” You ask, and she nods, reaching for a weapon on it's rack- then flushing in embarrassment when she realizes it's not there.

1/3
>>
Papa Bear guy >>32556281 here, a thought for those of you interested in a more diplomatic solution.

If the matrons are honestly intent on getting Zucchini more air time, wouldn't the squadron have more than one pair of backup Strikers? See if Kenji can prep them for the Italian's use and let Wendy keep 'hers'.
>>
You chuckle. “Force of habit, I know. I'm sticking you with Ice right now, if she doesn't like it, she'll reassign you midair. That ok?” Wendy nods again.

“Alright. I'm mounting up.” you say, noticing Kenji moving off to greet Merlin near the ladderwell door as she enters the hangar next to Mav and Goose.

You actually have to take the time to do a full walkaround- Merlin joins you partway through as Wendy's strikers fire up with a scream, their magical jets drawing their familiar circular pattern on the ground as they begin to utilize the energies fed to them by her.

“Hey Merlin.” You ask, looking up at your own jets- far, far larger than the small strikers, and exponentially more powerful. “How come ours don't do that?”

“D-do what?” She asks, then looks over at the fading symbol on the ground. “Oh. W-well, we're oriented differently a-and they don't use as m-much energy initially. You s-should really ask Tabitha or R-rosalie, they'd be able to t-tell you better.”

“Nah, doesn't matter.” You say, heading up to the nose. “Need a hand?”

2/3
>>
“S-sure. Thanks Frank.” She says, accepting the offered help up to the ladder and climbing aboard, sitting down as you start up the side of your fighter's nose yourself. Her boots and socks drop past you into Kenji's waiting hands as she gets ready for the flight, not being able to wear them and use the magical suite provided for her.

You run through your preflights quickly- only pausing long enough to watch Katya roll out of the hangar with her wingmate- Slider- followed shortly by Ice and Wendy, then Rosalie, Mav, and Goose.

The weather outside is VFR- clear and a million, unusual for this time of year, without a cloud in the sky. The range is supposed to have scattered cloud cover, possibly growing into a rainstorm over the course of the hop, and you plan to keep one ear to the RAF meteorological services, just in case.

Your takeoff is as harsh as you remember, but you're still glad to be in the air. Behind you, Merlin quietly chews on something as she works, her intercom mic toggled open and her main display linked to your right hand MFD- it flashes through various targets, birds, rabbits, a pair of school-age witches on the ground- as she cycles up the powerful sensors of the fighter.

“How are we going to do this, Frank?” She asks, finally done with her work.

[] “She's not going to come up to play in the clear air, so we'll have to go down and get her.”

“Unless she comes up, it'll have to be straight boom and zoom.” You say, looking at the mountain range in the distance. “I'd ranter not play around terrain with a witch, especially an Ahfgan vet.”

“We're tied in with AWACS.” Merlin announces. “but they're just controlling the exercise, not giving us intercept information. I'm getting sporadic transient hits down among the mountains, but at this range I can't pinpoint anything, sorry Frank.”

You don't respond- you don't need to, Merlin knows you well enough by now to know she doesn't have to say sorry, and she's just doing it out of habit at this point. You enter the range complex and the controller- a one star general with the RAF, flying aboard the AWACS, calls game on- totally unnecessary, you think, though you can't complain.

“Got her!” Merlin calls out- a split second before you do. “Ten o'clock low, coming around the mountains there. She's seen us.”

“Yeah, she's trying to bait us.” you say, watching your friend and opponent's almost lazy turns around the terrain, letting you just catch sight of her before she turns around another peak. “She's too high up. Damn what I'd give for missiles.”

>>
Still, you have to do something, and that something is to make high speed passes on her- you only have to get lucky once, you think- though the same thing applies to her. Still, you observe her for a minute more before planning your attack, gradually advancing the throttles and honking the fighter into a brutal left turn as she disappears around a mountain again.

You haven't started your dive, yet- you're waiting for her to pop back out before you do, though you've already got a good idea of where she's going to be when she does. Sure enough she does- tossing one look back over her shoulder to spot you, ready to continue waiting to pounce on you when you get tired of playing her game.

You could almost swear you see her eyes get about as wide as dinner plates and her pupils contract to pinpoints as your wyvern comes barreling out of the sky on afterburner plumes hundreds of feet long, pointed squarely at her chest.

To her credit, she rolls away from your gunsights- accursed fixed forward weapons being your one true weakness- and begins to scream hell bent for leather for the hard deck, well below the cliffs.

Katya's not a good comparison. She's got freakish endurance. I think, but am not at all sure, that the wyvern has slightly longer single-tank range. The major difference, however, is that we can mid-air refuel, and witches can't, no matter how adorable this picture is

I'd chalk that up as a win in a real world battle. Force a witch down in no man's land/enemy territory?
>>
>>32558414
No way a fighter is fuel efficient enough to loiter for 20 hours even at optimal altitude. A prop plane would though.
>>
>>32558475
That's actually an interesting question. Do witches have any glide once their juju runs out, or do they just drop?
>>
>>32558496
I think that, as their sparkles fade, they kinda just start losing altitude until they land.
>>
>>32558496
Deploy bat wings.
>>
>>32558496
considering a witch is about as aerodynamic as some one hang gliding with cement shoes id imagine that they would drop
>>
>>32558475
>>32558414
Shows a grasp of tactics. In a real life situation we probably wouldn't play in the dirt with a witch unless it were mission critical. We'd either box her up until our own witches could deal with her, bait her into coming up and playing with us, or withdraw.
>>
>>32557882
>She's not coming up and we've got her defensive, we can't let up the pressure!

Emulate the shark twins.

Follow at a moderate but ominous distance behind her.

Close enough to reach out and touch her with our guns, far enough to dodge if she tries to shoot us.

Make her sweat.
>>
>>32558475
>>32558551
And guess what? That's not the point of these trials.

Do it quick or do it slow, at the end of the day, we've got to fuck the shit up of anyone they send up against us.
>>
>>32558496
I read it as magic is their energy--all scenes of magic depletion have had exhaustion of similar magnitude. I think if they literally run dry, they pass out cold. See Katya's defection.
>>
>>32558496
I think they are trained to know to save enough juju to pull off a massive shield on landing when nearly spent.

[x] Break off! We do not want to follow her down.

You curse under your breath, pulling the stick back into your stomach and pulling the fighter out of it's dive- losing track of Katya behind your fighter's nose- though you're hoping you can separate fast enough that she won't be able to reverse it on you.

It seems, though, that last time she tangled with you, she was sandbagging- you roll the fighter to the right, dancing neatly around the stream of tracers- then cursing and having to kick in yaw, pivoting your nose off the vertical as her second burst nearly finds you.

Now parallel to the ground, Katya latches on from below- Her borrowed M60 spitting lead as she chases you across the sky, forcing you to use the terrain as much as you can in an effort to break away and re-engage.

She, clearly, doesn't plan to let you go, and she's staying far enough back that you can't attempt to dump speed and get behind her.

Forced defensive, you're still able to gain room on her, slowly clawing away from the witch.

“Break right!” Merlin cries- you slam the fighter into a hard turn, twisting your head to the left and watching the tracers float away from you. Unfortunately, the move costs you airspeed- Katya's able to regain the lost distance, forcing you to work just to stay in the air.

“Merlin I've had about enough of this shit.” You grunt.

“She's still behind us.” Merlin calls. “Low and to the left!”

>>32558745
This...is a REALLY good question
>>
[x] Tell me when she reloads, let's see if we can reverse this.

“Don't lose her, Merlin!” You bark, flying by as much instinct as anything else, trying to keep Katya in your line of sight- with limited success. “Tell me when she goes for a reload!”

You roll over another burst, this one shorter than the last- she must be getting low on ammo, now. She's backing off too, so she must be ready to go for a reload.

“She's dropped the box!” Merlin calls, meaning Katya's dropped the ammunition box fitted to the side of witch model M60s. “I don't see a belt- I think she's dry, frank!”

Even if she is, you doubt that she's completely defenseless, and she's left enough space to react if you shoot for a reversal- so you hit your countermeasures release, dropping a cloud of chaff and flares in her path before chopping both your throttles to idle, near shutoff, and yanking your stick back again. A vapor cloud forms around your nose as your fighter pitches up, your speed savagely bleeding away from you as you do.

Katya, instead of shooting past, instead skids right, changing her path of travel to be perpendicular to yours- breaking away to reload. Funny that she thinks that should work.

You pivot your nose around again, your fighter describing a quarter cartwheel as it does so, your massive thrust vectored jets rebuilding your energy almost without a pause. Katya, still reloading, dives, heading back for the relative protection of the mountain ranges.

[x] Ahahaha, nope.

You bounce away, climbing off of Katya's tail. She disappears into the mountains again, while you regain your perch- almost totally resetting the fight.

“How we looking on fuel?” You ask Merlin, scanning for Katya among the mountains- you catch occasional glimpses of her, but nothing solid, though you think you can get her general direction- she's headed north west, out towards the coast.

“We’re fine.” Merlin responds. “We’ve got enough countermeasures for two or three more tricks like that, full guns, temps all in the normal ranges. No stress warnings, board's still all green.”

You nod, having now lost track of Katya. “You got her on sensors?” You ask.

“Negative.” Merlin answers. “These mountains are strange, they're messing with everything, even the magic sensors. Maybe that's why she's staying in them.”

“Maybe.” You say, looking around for her.

“Frank! Watch out!” Merlin shouts, forcing you to respond instantly, hooking the fighter in a hard left turn and breaking away as Katya pops up from the mountains in a vertical climb like a jet powered demented jack in the box, her M60 up and tracking.

Same. Official SW productions are pretty meh but the fandom makes some neat stuff - including these SW quests.

Neat.

I also unironically enjoy Nickelback, Babymetal, and Aliens: Colonial Marines.

The quests are nothing like the show, which is good, because the show is terrible, and terrible people think it's good for anything more than showing pedobait to the forever-alone.

I'm of the opinion that people are allowed to enjoy whatever they want. I can find some modicum of enjoyment from everything in SW other than the stupid fucking Neuroi bullshit and Yoshika's "power of friendship" stuff

I'd be happy if they could just decide on one set of rules for magic isntead of contradicting themselves every production.
>>
>>32560791
I wish they would decide whether or not they want to be taken seriously because half the time they're retarded and the other half makes me actually enjoy the plot.
>>

In SW's defense, a good 80% of franchises (anime or not) that contain magic just use it as plot spackle

>we want something to happen
>but laws of nature
>fuck it, magic

Except SW directly contradicts itself regularly.
>Witches lose their power when the gem in their hand glows.
>ANCIENT FOSSIL LADY TRAINING CAMP GO!

See also: Yoshika burning out her magic then immediately regaining it because friendship and them being bored with S1 Neuroi so rocks falled and new Neuroi showed up.
