Peasant Quest Part 3

Part 1: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/32511645/
Part 2: https://archive.foolz.us/tg/thread/32524979

You are a peasant lad, 18 years of age. Born to a hardworking peasant family in a bustling farming village, hidden away in the hinterlands of a great empire. You are newly a man & felt the itch of destiny.

You have been blessed with exceptional intelligence & the ability to read.

Fate gave you an opportunity to escape the humdrum life of tilling fields by searching for buried treasure in the woods with a shady army veteran.

Unfortunately things went awry.

You fell afoul of some filthy savages. They chased you into a creepy old circle of standing stones & skewered you with a spear.

You died.

Luckily, the circle was inhabited by an ominous presence that you've come to know as 'The Pale Tree'. It made you an offer you couldn't refuse & now your corpse has been possessed by the rage & hunger of a dead god, which has given you some kind of unlife.

The exact nature of your condition remains something of a mystery.

You seem resolved to seek some kind of redemption, save your fiesty barbarian waifu; Kassa & get yourself out of this mess.

*******************

I'll be picking up from where part 2 ended (ignore 2A, it was abit of a mess).

Decisions made by vote, though I'll generally give more weight to well thought out/perceptive/intelligent choices.

'Knowledge checks' about people, places etc are encouraged & will take place outside the flow of time, but will be limited to what our character knows.

First story post incoming....
>>
Oh & as always, there will be more ampersands than you can handle.
>>
>>32548487
Thanks for running part 2, Helios.
>>
>>32548614

You're welcome, hope you're enjoying it as much as I am.
*****

You've returned to the standing stones in the heart of the forest, searching for Kassa. You were told she came here thinking you were dead & seeking to avenge you & end her own life on the spot where you fell. She set off from the village towards this end some 5 days previous.
On your way here you found a gruesome spectacle, near two dozen of the savages native to this forest viciously butchered, their bodies arranged in a pile with the severed head of the man who killed you placed on top.
You look about the circle for any sign of Kassa or The Pale Tree but see nothing. On closer examination of the area you find a dark stain on the ground where you fell, your own blood. Next to it is an even larger bloodstain, it seems quite recent & if all the blood soaking into the ground came from one person, theres no way they'd have survived.
You try & shout out Kassa's name, but due to the large hole in your chest, shouting isnt something you can manage.

You're frustrated, desperate & scared. Everything you cherish in life seems like it's about to fall apart. You need to do *something*.

But what?
>>
>>32548806

>Shameless cheating after reading part 2A

We aquired a mysterious intuitive sense after rising from the dead. We used it to find out where the tomb was and find our way out of the forest. We should try and use it to find Kassa.
>>
>>32548806
Kassa killed herself, we can see this. She would have met the tree. She probably would have jumped at the chance to 'live with us forever'. The fact that she isn't here shows she's up and about.

We can try to find her still. However we should prepare for the eventuality that she is not herself.
>>
>>32548806

cry, of course!

remember Kassa's dream, run to the village
>>
>>32548806
The dream, the village, the tree. RUN RUN RUN.
>>
>>32548974
>>32548986
>>32548991

You know what this looks like. You were born with an analytical mind & it's telling what happened here wether you like it or not.

Kassa came here full of grief & anger & took her own life. The Pale Tree took care of the rest. But the timing doesn't make sense, you were dead for days before waking up, Kassa seems to have come & gone in a fraction of that. Did she see you lying here dead? Then why leave?

The tree pushed all kinds of thoughts, images & memories directly into your mind, you consider the possiblity that it concealed things from you as well. If it spoke to Kassa as you suspect, what did it tell her?

These questions would have to wait. You need to act. You recall Kassa's nightmare, the burning village, the tree & the two of you sat in it's branches.

Suddenly you *know* where she is & not from deduction. You can *feel* her. She's in the village, flames all around her. It feels as though she's glowing with energy & your heart sinks as you realise it's from all the lives that she has stolen. She's surrounded by hundreds of warm bodies & theyre all chanting her name.

She knows you're watching, it seems this sixth sense goes both ways. She calls out to you with a silent pulse of desire that crackles through your cold body like electricity. The sheer otherness of it unsettles you. But another part of you seethes with anticipation.

Is there anything you want to do before you leave the forest? Or do we head straight for whatever is left of Kassa & our home?
>>
>>32549333
Kassa first, tomb later if necessary. We need to win her back round.
>>
>>32549333
See if we can sense anything else with our sense, as well. Anyone with magical abilities or those with faith in the sun god.
>>
>>32549366
>>32549443
We could probably do both at the same time.
>>
>>32549333
Pray to the pale tree inside the circle and ask what it has done to Kassa.
>>
>>32549476
It might take some concentration to do so. Better to stand and concentrate then run and concentrate.
>>
>>32549333

Curse the tree!

It could have revived you on the spot like it did with Kassa, but it kept you dead long enough for her to find you and kill herself! It knew she was coming! DAMN!!!
>>
>>32549531
We don't need to inject religion into this.
>>32549552
It very-well may have.
>>
>>32549568
We are quite literally the first priest of this dead god. Its all about religion.
>>
>>32549552
True.
>>
>>32549552
burn it burn the tree
>>
>>32549366
>>32549443

You decide to return to the village but first you take a moment to see if you can feel out your surroundings further. You can sense something, it reminds you of the feeling of dawn approaching, yet more diffuse. It's uncomfortable to focus on, you can't tell where it is coming from, but it seems to be gradually creeping closer.

You don't like the feel of it, but you can worry about it later.

You run back home as fast as you can, you dont bother with the road this time, going straight through the fields. The countryside goes past in a blur. None of it matters to you. You reach your home village. The palisade lies charred & shattered. Evidently broken open by the raider host that has been rampaging across the countryside. The main thoroughfare is scarcely recognizable, buildings smashed open & set aflame, bodies lying in the street, shrieks & sobs on the wind. Behind it all you can hear the rhythmic chanting. hundreds of voices in unison saying the same thing over & over.

You suspect the language must be that of the northern raiders. The only word you recognize is 'Kassa'. You follow the voices, stepping over fallen timber & slain villagers. They're leading you towards the chapel, you turn the corner into the small square where it stands...
>>
>>32549719

But the chapel is gone, smashed to rubble. In it's place is a crude wooden structure, built from broken bits of timber & you note with revulsion, human remains. It's smaller & simpler, but what it's intended to represent is clear.

The Pale Tree.

Hundreds of raiders are gathered around the tree-structure, chanting in some kind of ritual observance. Waving aloft bloody weapons & burning torches. You notice a few surviving villagers as well, bound in chains at the mercy of the raiders.

On a raised makeshift bench at the base of the 'tree' sits Kassa. She's lounging like a cat stretching itself at a warm fire & is licking blood from her fingers. Her skin is corpse-pale, her hair filthy & matted. In place of teeth, her mouth is filled with jagged, bony thorns & all about her face is caked with blood & gore.
Her eyes are the worst, they're gone completely. Only the empty sockets remain, filled with impenetrable shadows that resist the glare of the fires. Just below her heart is an open wound, from the positioning, it looks self inflicted.

You wonder if this is what you look like now.

She lazily turns to you, she seems stupefied. If you didnt know better, you'd think she were drunk.

The crowd falls silent & parts before you. She beckons to you.

What do you do?
>>
>>32549552

Use this newfound anger directed towards the pale tree as fuel to reach the village, determined to undo whatever it did to the mind of our precious Kassa
>>
>>32549737

Reach to Kassa! try to snap her out of it!
>>
>>32549737
Nod to her. "Kassa. What did it promise you?"
>>
>>32549737
Turn around and walk away.
>>
>>32549781
That's going to require some hardcore diplomancy, anon.
>>
>>32549737
Let's see what she wants.

You walk through the crowd to the base of the profane tree sculpture. Then stop. All the warm bodies around you, all the death on the air, it whispers to you. Every fibre of your being screams at you to bite into warm flesh & gorge yourself. Kassa reeks of blood, the scent of it swirls around you like a seductive musk, begging you to let go.

But you hold fast, finding steel from somewhere inside you. You've lost too much to lose yourself as well.

Kassa isnt lounging anymore, she watches you intently.

"What did it promise you?" you ask.

She cocks her head to one side, a quizzical expression on her face, for a moment, there's a flicker of something else too but you can't read it.

She smiles & despite the monster she has become, to you she's still beautiful.

"You" she replies simply.

It's an answer you should have anticipated, but it shocks you all the same. You don't know what to say to that. But you do know that you need to do something. Kassa has always been fierce & reckless, but this isnt her. You need to find a way to drag her out of this pit she's fallen into before she drags you down as well.

What do you do?
>>
>>32550150
Tell her she already had you.
>>
>>32550150
Ask her what happened to her dad.
>>
>>32550226
I like this.

Also, perfect timing, OSW ends, PQ begins. I won't get anything done today...
>>
>>32550150
>>32550226
With a bit of flair:
"You already had me. You always will. I wasn't the tree's to give."
>>
>>32550226
>>32550226
Thirded. Sincere as you like. Get a tear in maybe?
>>
>>32550249
Worst part is I have shit to do till 3 today. I have my phone though.
>That feel when best memories of quests were made when using your phone.
>>
>>32550226

Remember how wrong it felt in the dream Kassa! I know you are in there! PLEASE come back to me, I don't want to go down, please...
>>
>>32550323
It's a dicey maneuver. I almost feel like appealing to her sense of strength and asking her why she hasn't forgiven us for breaking our promises to her (don't trust the guy who hired us and don't die).
>>
Nice quest, even though there seems to have been an inordinate amount of arguing over whether to be good, evil, smart or suicidal in the previous threads, when I can figure out which one we're actually supposed to be I'll begin taking part in it.
Also, I'd suggest you use the word "and" occasionally, it just feels wrong to read "&" all the time instead.
>>
>>32550287
>>32550285
>>32550226

You put what remains of your soul into every word.

"You already had me Kassa, you've *always* had me, you *still* have me."
You look to the all the horror around you.
"You didn't need to do this, you didn't need to become this."

Anger flashes across her face.

"I *had* you?" She snarls.

"You left, remember that? You died! I found you cold and dead with a spear through you in those woods."
"You think you came back from the dead 'just because'? You think 'the power of love' is the reason we can even have this conversation instead of rotting in the ground"
"I offered up my soul for you, I killed those wretched wood-people to avenge you & I ate these stinking dirt-farmers so we could be together."

Her expression softens

"Can't you feel it? This is forever."

She shrugs her shoulders & opens her hands palms up.

"You can hate me, you can pity me, you can be disgusted by me. It doesn't matter. It might take ten lifetimes, but you'll get over it & we'll both still be here."

You mind races, trying to counter her words & her obsession, even though you're at the heart of it.

That unpleasant prickling sensation from earlier is back & stronger, it's like the sun is coming but dawn is hours away. You have a bad feeling.

What do you do?
>>
>>32550662
Ask her what neato powers she got.

Also where her dad is.
>>
>>32550662
We should take her somewhere else. I don't think she's thinking straight while being worshiped like a god.

"Kassa, I failed you three times. I failed to listen to Jayr's words to that damned traveller, I failed to listen to Assaraeus's words, and I failed my promise to you. But I'm not failing you in this. All this destruction and death isn't worth keeping what will be left of us existing here.

And don't say living because this ISN'T a life! The tree didn't do this because it was nice, or it wanted us to be happy. It gains from all of this. And we lose. We'll lose what we are until only it matters!

We need to do what I should have done and stand for what's right, even if it's the hardest thing in the world. I know you're strong enough to do it, if I can."

Don't run from what's coming. Face it.

>>32550717

You've had such arguments before, this is familiar territory, though the circumstances more horrifying. That much lifts your heart, this is Kassa. Kassa at her worst, worse than you thought possible, but Kassa all the same.

You need to get her out of here, all of this carnage & mayhem around you is feeding the thing that you let the pale tree put into you & making it hard to think. It must be the same for her.

"Kassa I dont care, we're together now that's what matters. Theres nothing left here for us. Let's go somewhere far away. Start again, forget about this."

You reach out your hand to her, but keep your feet firm. She needs to walk away from the damned tree.

She seems dumbstruck, there's real joy in her face. She clearly wasn't expecting it to be this easy. She stakes a few steps down, reaching for you....

Suddenly the discomfort that has been building in the background doubles & explodes in a flash of agony, before fading away to nothing. You can see Kassa felt it too. The both of you look about you try & find the source whatever it was.

Soft chimes sound all around you, as if there are tiny bells in the wind drifting from the east.

A man's voice rings out, impossibly loud. It comes from everywhere at once as if the sound had fallen from the sky.

"ENEMIES OF THE SUN!"
>>
Told janit was all about religion.
>>
>>32551624
OH NOW YOU SHOW UP SUN GOD. NICE GOING MAN. YOU DICK. I WAS ROOTING FOR YOU YESTERDAY THE WHOLE TIME GODDAMNIT. YOU SUCK SUN GOD.
>>
>>32551624

As one, without thinking or speaking you and Kassa both scale the tree in a heartbeat, seeking a vantage point to find the source of the voice.

Impossibly a vast host surrounds the villages eastern edge, thousands upon thousands of armored men & cavalry, baggage trains, everything. That an army of this size could simply appear in the space of an hour without a sound is unthinkable, yet here it stands.

You recognize the proud imperial standards borne aloft. The regimental accoutrements of The Empires southern armies. At the head of the host are eleven warriors mounted on white horses, they are radiant in armor of gold & alabaster. Each of them holds a spear that burns white like the heart of The Sun itself. It hurts just to look at them.

You recognize their leader, it's Assareaus, 10 of his brothers & sisters of the Golden Spear at his side. It was his voice that spoke.

He looks straight at you with an unyielding gaze. His face no longer kindly but hard & grim.

What do you do?

Fight: Even with all the unholy power that surges through your dead flesh, you doubt you could prevail against thousands. To say nothing of the Golden Spears, they are each warriors of legend.

Flee: You grab Kassa & run as far and as fast as you can. But how far can you make it? They made a whole army materialize from nowhere & many are mounted on strong horses.

Surrender: Just give up. You know why the are here. You've read the imperial histories and The Sun Kings laws. All traces of the old gods are to be eradicated with fire and sword. They will try and put an end to you, put perhaps a clean death at your loves side is the best you can hope for.

You come down off of the tree & kneel in the dirt. This has gone on long enough. You bow your head. You could run, fight a losing battle against what you've become watch yourself & Kassa become monsters. But no, this is your chance to be clean, to free your soul & Kassa's too.

You can sense that she wants to fight but she wont leave you. If you mean to die, she'll die at your side.

At the sight of their gods broken, the raiders flee & the imperial army sweeps after them, surging around you like a river of bronze.

The Gold Spears surround you. Assaraeus speaks, "I should never have let him go into the forest, the weight of this tragedy is mine to bear. Yet I can still free the boys soul" Without further ceremony he plunges his burning spear into your heart.

The pain is unbearable, your whole body is feels as though it is burning from the inside out. Yet, you endure still.

A look of grave concern creeps onto Assareaus' face. You get the impression he expected this to finish you.

"Forgive me boy" he mutters.

"Master!" shouts another Goldspear. "They are not branches. They are the root, both of them. We havn't the means to destroy them!"

"Aye sister" Assaraeus replies. "We bind them then, drive staves of ash in their hearts & wrap them with holy chains. We seal them in metal coffins & weld them shut with sunfire."

He continues,

"Cast the boy's casket into the deepest part of the southern ocean, the girl's into the path of the hungry glaciers in the north."

He looks at you one more time, his face filled with regret before another Goldspear drives his weapon between your eyes & you black out.

There is no time in the void, only emptiness.

For you it has only been a moment since the burning spear drove into your skull before you feel the taste of warm blood dripping onto your tongue.

It pulls your mind back from the blackness, you are lying on a metal slab of some kind, men are talking excitedly around you in a tongue you've never heard before.

The blood is not from just one man, but from several. To your suprise fragmented memories open up in your brain. Names & images you don't understand. Words begin to form & suddenly you begin to understand snippets of the speech you hear around you.

" Directly observable cellular regeneration, remarkable"
Another voice, "The implications for archeology alone, a civilization existing before the last glacial period..."
A third, "One hundred & twenty thousand years, nothing could survive..."
The first again, "By God, it's stirring stand back man!"

Suddenly you're up, you can see. The room before you is like nothing you've seen before, some kind of closed amphitheater of wood & metal. Yet all the seats are empty. There are 3 men stood around you in crisp, folded layers of black & white clothing.

"Where am I? How long...?"

"It speaks English!" gasps one of the men.

The first man addresses you directly.

"You're in the heart of The Royal Society of London, old boy", "You've come around just in time for the turn of the 19th century!"

Be honest QM, would we not be in the 19th century if we didn't get caught by the sun folk and lived our lives as the avatar of the tree?
>>
>>32553110

Welp
>>
>>32553110
"how was I found? markings ruins? I need to find her"
>>
Oh fuck.
>>
>>32553105

yeah,

we didn't forget everything about who we were and tried to act like we normaly would, while doing this we were temted to send everything to hell by the thing inside of us.

damn....I'm not even sure what i'm trying to say now...

captha: rocky bordeli......good suggestion
>>
>>32553110
"Did you take any samples of my blood or body? Where did the blood you gave me come from?"
>>
>>32553110

say nothing.

try to sense her like before
>>
>>32553198
Ok now I know what you're trying to say but honestly, when I see people trying to play monsters like humans I always have to think of Twilight.
I prefer to play my vampires like monsters who have the intelligence of humans, just saying probably would have not turned this quest into steampunk(?).

I've been mostly winging it tbh, just trying to spin shit out as we go along. The Pale Tree, Assaraeus & Kassa were the only things planned in advance. Only came up with this little development at work today.

Imma leave it there tonight, hope you've enjoyed it.

I shall return tomorrow at 1930ish GMT for part 4 of Immortal Undead Peasant in Dickensian London Quest - Ampersands never die!

I'll lurk around the thread abit longer for any feedback/questions. Also I'd appreciate an archive for those wise in such things.
>>
>>32553110
Why hello, I am afraid I must be going now. Have a good day!
>>
>>32553251

I don't care for Steampunk, things will be more Historical/Lovecraftian in theme.
>>
>>32553110
The last time we went straight for Kassa, things went horribly wrong.
She got the same treatment as us. She'll be fine. They said it's been 120000 years, time is hardly of the essence.

We can probably cross Assaraeus off the list of things to do.
We may still have two gods to kill, though.

For now, we should get acquainted with whenever now is.
>>
>>32553251

good point.
I was in favor of holding off the sloughter until we were reunited with Kassa but I don't know where those anons got the idea that surrendering would end well for us.
>>
>>32553285
Well that didn't really answer my question, but it's fine. Thanks for running.

>Historical/Lovecraftian

Good to know.
>>
>>32553375

we are probably hungry as fuck!

we should sense if the thing that put pressure on us to kill is still acting up, It can tell us if the Pale Tree is still active these days
>>
>>32553429
If it is, we'll find out. At worst we might wake it up if we try reaching out for it in any way.
>>
>>32553393

I did have a whole, survive as vampires in the imperial city vaguely thought out.

In honesty though, I tipped the scales for the big timeskip, cause I wanted to pull an off kilter twist. Fight & surrender led here. Flee led to the imperial city.
>>
>>32553459
I see, though I wouldn't expect a quest to escalate so fast in the first three threads. And I also didn't expect people to suddenly vote surrender en ma-oh wait it's /tg/ the bad decisions board.
>>
>>32553459

Quest is good so far,
wonder what the woods are now nowadays
>>
>>32553367
Thanks for running! Has anyone archived the thread?
>>
>>32553532
Every thread on /tg/ and some other boards are automatically archived on foolz, so there's no need to worry.

Vague lore spoiler: If you're active, the tree is too. If you've played Mask of The Betrayer, your relationship with the tree is kinda inspired by The Spirit Eater's relationship with Myrkul
>>
>>32553532

I agree, if its in sup tg it's more likely to pick up new players
>>
>>32553670
I'd archive it myself, but I don't know how.

Quick question: How would you feel about the introduction of a very simple sanity system. Wouldnt be any kind of morality meter & rolls for sanity loss would be rare, but something to reflect how living as a undead monstrosity can put a wee strain on the human psyche.

>>
>>32553732

It's good and all, my only beef with sanity systems is that it's generally imposible to recover points.....making it a time bomb to compleate madness, in CoC it was nice and since you are gunning for it I guess its ok but in the long run it may fuck us in this quest
>>
>>32553732
As long as there are reasonable ways to gain it. The Tree picked us for a reason, and doesn't want a gibbering and mindless monster.

Beyond that, do what fits the tone of the quest.
>>
>>32554806
>>32553732
Just thought of something to add to my previous post. Hellborn quest has a stress metre and a sanity metre (we've only seen sanity once, at a really bad moment). Look at that and do what feels right.
>>
>just woke up
>everything turned to hell

Jesus fuck your players are retarded. That or the vote was heavily samefagged. Consider using final destination style voting next time.
