PREVIOUSLY on SRW /tg/:

When we last saw MAJOR MICHAEL WALTER, ace mech pilot and veteran of the Tiberium War, he was being introduced to Melissa Mao and Kurz Weber, pilots of the secret organization Mithril onboard the airborne carrier Cu Chulainn. We now continue with the results of the last vote from the previous thread.

"So, Sergeant Major," you ask Melissa Mao, "I'd like to know a bit about Mithril and how you run things here. What's standard operating protocols for you? How do you work? I mean, I hadn't even heard of you people before yesterday."

"That's pretty much as it should be, Major." The woman leans back on her chair and looks up before continuing. "Mithtil is so secret, only a few select people in the GDI top brass and the UN security council know about it. We operate in deep cover, and when we do combat operations we usually disguise ourselves as GDI forces. Tessa... I mean the Captain doesn't like using us in battle much. She prefers long-term surveillance missions, covert infiltration assignments, sabotage, that sort of thing."

You follow up with another question. "So what is your actual mission? What kind of technology was Mithril founded to control?"

Kurz replies to your inquiry with a jovial tone. "Well, Major, you fought in the Tiberium War, right? You ever noticed how the Brotherhood of Nod had all these nice flashy toys that we never quite could copy or catch up with? Like the stealth fields they developed for tanks that became the foundation of the ECS system our Arm Slaves use? Or how they had these high-powered lasers that could vaporize a humvee from a click away? Advanced AIs, weaponized tiberium, other things like that?" He takes a sip of his beer. "Well, Mithril was founded to look into where Kane got all his stuff from."

(1/2)
>>
"It had to be done completely in secret. The Brotherhood had people infiltrated at all levels, so Mithril's creation was never officially recognized. As far as the world knows, we never existed, and we still don't." Kurz slams the beer glass down on the table. "But just because the war's over doesn't mean our job is done! It's not just Kane that's been getting these new toys. Other terrorist groups, research institutes, shady corporations... there's strange happenings all over the place. A lot of that EOTI business is related to our mission too, that's why we're going there. But me and Melissa, we're not really cleared for more detailed info on all that. You should ask Tessa, Kalinin or Mardukas to fill you in. Who knows, maybe they'll even tell you."

You mull this over. "So what kind of tech have you encountered? That giant mech with the force field that my squad ran into in Azadistan... Have you fought things like that in your line of work?"

Kurz shakes his head, like a dog drying itself. "No, man. We never came up on anything like that. Mostly, we've been smashing labs and stuff. Don't really know what's in them."

You settle in and make yourself comfortable as the others talk, preferring to listen rather than talk. Mao and Russel share stories of growing up in America before the Impact and the war. Lamia shares some anecdotes from the Gespenst prototype testing, and Kurz casually mentions Mithril monitors the mech's development process as part of its activities. As for Kurz, he prefers to talk about his time with another Mithril pilot, who is away on mission now, a certain Sagara Sousuke.

"Of course it's not his real name," Kurz comments, "he's originally from Central Asia, but he assumed that name to get into a Japanese highschool..."

"A Japanese highschool? What exactly does Mithril need to have a man inside a highschool for?" You ask.

"The noblest of missions, and the best a warrior can ask for." Kurz smiles and makes a dramatic gesture, pointing at the ceiling. "To protect a fair lady, a princess if you will, from the clutches of evil! Oh, and if you ask me, the kid needed to spend some time in a normal setting. Kalinin raised him to be a soldier, and sure, he's great, very professional and all, but still, he's a kid, he should have fun and relax a bit."

You decide to ask for clarifications on that whole "princess" thing, but just as you're about to speak, your commlink buzzes. Captain Testarossa is calling you to her quarters on an urgent matter. You rise and excuse yourself, using the time-honored special ability of soldiers to sober up instantly when called to a briefing by an officer.
(1/2)
>>
Making your way to the Captain's quarter you enter to see her flanked by her two stern advisors. You take a seat next to them opposite her across a large desk.

"Major," the Captain begins in a solemn tone, "we have a situation developing outside Japan. A plane carrying one of our agents and the civilian he's been assigned to protect has been hijacked by a terrorist group. We have to send a response team to retrieve the civilians, but we also can't be delayed in our mission to protect the EOTI conference. So I need your help, Major. Form two teams using the pilots in your squad as well as our two AS pilots. Team One will proceed to the EOTI conference on the Tuatha de Danaan, while Team Two will proceed to rescue the hostages and, if possible, our operative." She looks to you with something that almost looks like pleading. "Any questions you have about the operation, I can answer right now. But we have to act quickly, Major."

>>
"To begin with," you say as you lean your elbows down on the table and fold your hands in front of you, "I'd like to know the OPFOR in both locations. What are we expecting to encounter? It'll help tailor the squads."

Kalinin answers your question. "The terrorist group that Team 2 will be up against have touched down in Chabarovsk, a former Nod stronghold in Siberia. Our operative recently contacted us and reported troops, vehicles and AS units on site, mostly old hardware. Team 2 will move in as a GDI operation, and this complicates things because the region is known for being very hostile to the Initiative, so we need to get in quickly, secure the hostages and get out. No room for anything else." He frowns. "As for the EOTI conference, we have no solid information on the threat we could be facing there, aside from several sources indicating that multiple terrorist organizations have set it as a target. Our objective there will, hopefully, be more about monitoring the technology and research being presented than dealing with threats on the ground. Still, we need combat-capable personnel if things do go sour."

>You have 2 more questions.

"Has anyone come forward to claim responsibility for the hijacking? Issued demands or anything like that?" You muse.

Kalinin shakes his head. "No. In fact, our operative reported that a bomb has been planted inside the plane, set to explode in 4 hours. It appears the aim of this group was the person our man was tasked to secure, and nothing else. Which means they're very well informed."

"What about support at the two sites? Are there local security forces in place at the conference, and can we count on satellite surveillance data for Team 2?" You ask.

"The EOTI Institute has its own security force, but for various reasons, they can't fully be trusted." Teletha replies. "As for the satellites, I have requisitioned a portion of the GDI's surveillance grid to keep continuously monitoring the vicinity of Khabarovsk. That area is close to a Red Zone, though, so we can't rely on that too much. We have to have a contingency plan if an ion storm hits."

Well, regardless of our other choices, Katina is going to the EOTI conference. A hostage rescue operation is going to need ECS equipped mechs. 8 total pilots, so we can split symmetrically.

I say for the hostage rescue we bring Mao, Kurtz, Natalya, and ourselves. Natalya proved to be very important in the last hostage situation, and having an extra sniper feels like it'll open up more options. Mao and Kurtz are more familiar with the m9's than anyone else, and since we're definitely going to have combat here it makes sense to bring them along.

Katina, Russel, Maria and Lamia get assigned EOTI conference duty.
>>
>>32464520

Let's see. EOTI conference will most likely be The Granzon Ruins Everything Starring SHUUU Shirakawa, the rescue team is saving Sousuke and Kaname and preventing people from getting their hands on Lambda Driver tech (since that was Kaname's Black Tech deal, I think? It's been a while since I watched FMP).

Please tell me we're going to get M9 units at least. Or Flags. Anything other than an AS outdated by roughly three versions.

Or a Scopedog. Dat vrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

>>

We should split our forces in half, but I'm not sure how.

I like the thought of stealth units for a hostage rescue mission, so Katina is definitely going to the conference. We should probably sent Kurz and Mao to the island, it's their friends ass on the line.

In addition we should probably lead the hostage rescue team ourselves, because fuck Nod.

I'm torn between Natalya or Maria for the hostage team. On the one hand I can see how two snipers would be useful for that sort of thing. On the other, Maria knows how Nod operates and we'd be leaving Team 1 without a sniper if we took Natalya.

In the interest of diving our forces evenly, so they'll be prepared for whatever happens at the conference, I say we bring Maria to save the hostages.

"Alright," you rise from your chair and start drawing up plans on the touchscreen surface of the desk. "1st Lt Tarask will lead Team One, comprised of Lieutenants Bagman, Poklonskaya and Loveless." Knowing Katina's hotheaded and impulsive nature, you pick out team members that know her well and can keep her grounded. "I will lead Team Two, comprised of 1st Sgt Mao, Sgt Weber and Lt Winnicot."

The desktop panel displays a map of the Chabarovsk airfield where the plane has been taken. Kalinin points down towards it. "Once we rendez-vous with the Danann and drop off Captain Testarossa and Commander Mardukas, we will proceed at full speed to the area. We will be joined by two GDI transport planes carrying a commando strike force. The AS units will launch ahead of the planes, surround the plane, neutralize the bomb, and secure the area. Meanwhile, the commando unit will land, sweep the plane and escort the civilians to the transport planes. The time window for this operation is five minutes exactly. We expect rapid mobilization of local militia and warlord forces once they are aware of our presence. Any equipment lost in the field is to be destroyed, we cannot allow Mithril technology to fall into enemy hands." He motions to the door. "Now let's go brief the pilots, Major."

MEANWHILE...

You are SERGEANT SAGARA SOUSUKE, Mithril field agent tasked with protecting Japanese highschooler Kaname Chidori. During a school trip to Okinawa, your plane was hijacked by a terrorist organization and forced to land in what looks to be an old Nod supply base left behind from the Tiberium Wars, in Siberia. You recognized the leader of the terrorists - Gauron, a man you thought you'd killed long ago. Fortunately, he didn't recognize you.

While most students have been left onboard the hijacked plane, your charge has been taken elsewhere. You snuck out of the plane and gone to ground in the base. The area is heavily guarded, with large patrols of infantry, mobile suits and Arm Slaves from the HRL block nations present as well as wheeled BTRs.

Currently you are taking cover behind a warehouse wall. Your target lies ahead, a truck lab parked in a well-lit area on the tarmac, deployed with slideout canvas compartments, windows darkened, doors shut tight. There are two guards guarding each door. Large, humming cables snake towards connector points in the truck from other vehicles nearby.

Your training and experience tells you to wait, recon the area, form a plan of attack and not rush in headlong. The place is guarded, hard to approach undetected, and the handgun you have is not silenced.

But another part of you, a part mostly unfamiliar to you, wants to ignore all that and run in, guns blazing, to rescue the girl. She's hurting, you're sure of it. You were tasked with protecting her. Impatience and hesitation, caution and emotion pull you in different directions.

Suddenly, a gunshot rings out from inside the van. Did they just execute Kaname Chidori? You stir to action, but you still hesitate. What do you decide?

>Rush in
>Wait
>>
>>32466470
Come on, don't be like that. He has to survive at least long enough for Setsuna to encounter him. Once that happens we can kill him, but let the character moment happen first. It'll be delightful. Especially if he teams up with Gauron. Because then Sosuke and Setsuna can bond over their mutual experiences being Middle Eastern child soldiers trained by sociopaths who later in life adopted Japanese names in order to work for secret organizations. It'll be the weirdest day for them, when they finally meet.

Intense emotion washes over you. Images of the girl hurt, violated, killed and discarded like so much trash. A casualty of war like all the others you have seen. A woman's body, bleeding out in the snow... What is that memory? Is it a memory at all? You feel a fury welling up inside, an intense hate for the ones that kill and abuse their power. It spurs you to action.

You turn the corner of the warehouse, noticing the guards in front of the door have abandoned their post and rushed inside. Fortunate for you, since you have abandoned all attempt at stealth rushing out like this. You have the presense of mind to hide behind the corner of the truck and listen.

"Sir! Is everything all right in there?" you hear a hesitant question. Then a slow, deliberate reply. "It's fine. I was just impressing the importance of a speedy conclusion to our work on the good doctor and the test subjects here." You glance into the gloom. The voice continues. "Now, I didn't think this one would be so uncooperative, so Doctor, hand me formula 2.22 please..."

You glance into the gloom beyond the doorway. Inside, you see two pods, hooked up to massive computers. In each of the pods you see a girl with blue hair. One is Kaname Chidori, your charge. But the other... You vaguely recognize her from another class in Kaname's school. Her hair is cropped short, and her eyes are a deep red color, contrasting with Chidori's brown.

Next to the pods you see a woman in a lab coat, retrieving a syringe that she hands to a blonde man in a black uniform with red trim. You recognize the pattern. It marks the wearer as a member of the Black Hand, Kane's inner circle. Chidori's pod slides open and the man raises a hand, leaning in towards her...

(1/2)
>>
At this moment, the girl jerks her knee forward and hits the man hard in the face, causing him to slump down and drop the syringe, clutching his head. The guards point their weapons on Kaname, yelling out for her to stop moving and get back in the pod. As if anticipating you, she has provided you a window of opportunity to strike.

I don't know, Shinji's pretty terrifying. Kid has absolutely no problem with destroying the world. We're lucky he so rarely has enough drive to actually do anything, if he did everyone would be dead by now. At his core, despite the emotional issues that keep him cowed and inactive, he is the son of Yui and Gendo Ikari. He is perfectly willing to damn the world if it should suit his desires.
>>
>>32467978
That just makes him normal. Caring about anyone beyond your immediate circle is not how most humans work.

No need to lose the element of surprise, you think. With everyone preoccupied with the scene in front of them, you quietly sneak up behind the guards and apply a tazer to each. The man notices you as he rises, still dazed from the knee to the face. He tries for his gun, but in another surprising moment of tactical awareness, Kaname kicks it hard, sending it out the door.

You determine you have the advantage. No need to shoot the hostiles just yet. First you will collect some information. You train the gun on the man, herding him towards the woman to make them easier to track. Turning to Kaname without letting the enemy out of your sight, you ask "are you alright? What were they doing to you in there?"

She looks at you, eyes wide in an adrenaline-fueled mix of fear, confusion and shock. "Sagara-kun?!"

The man looks at you with measured contempt, then turns to the woman in the lab coat. "If I didn't know Gauron better, I'd have thought he had sold me out. Leaving the base with this kind of pathetic security is something I'd expect from some wet-behind-the-ears amateur." He looks back at you. "Who are you, boy? Who sent you here?"

"I'll be asking the questions here!" You bark out, keeping the gun steady. Kaname, recovering somewhat from the shock, releases the other girl from her pod. She emerges, shivering but silent. "Are you OK, Ayanami?!" Chidori calls out to the girl. So she knows her name, you think. That means you were right about recognizing her from school.

But that's not important right now. What is important is interrogating the people in your sights.

Shinji has caused apocalypses, plural, in his single minded intent to accomplish his goals. That's not normal. It's not just a matter of "doesn't care about people he doesn't know". It's a matter of "if I can't get what I want I'm just going to annihilate all souls".

>>32468124
This is true. SRW is good for Shinji's emotional state. I haven't played Z3 yet, but seeing how it has both Evangelion and Gurren Lagann in it I'm hoping there's some nice interaction there. People kept comparing Simon to Shinji when TTGL first came out (even though the comparison isn't really accurate), I'd hope that having Simon there to show him how GAR is done would help Shinji grow as a person.

There is an option to learn more about GAUROOOOOON and we don't care enough about his scrubby shit to ask his name first.

We should already know from the girls anyway, since they'll have been here for a while. And this guy seems high-ranking, so he'll have been referred to as commander such and such, thus it stands to reason the girls would have heard this.

And girls are vindictive. They will remember that name to inflict everlasting passive-aggressiveness upon it later.

He was using nonlethal rounds because he was in a civilian area. His first response is generally to shoot, and he would normally be using lethal rounds.

No, you misunderstand what I'm saying. What I mean is that Sosuke applies the amount of force he needs to for any given incident. You're right, he's a practical soldier, and that means his priority is to end the threat. He'll shoot to kill if he has to. That doesn't mean he's bloodthirsty, though. He's perfectly willing to incapacitate a foe non-lethally. I'm just saying, he can't do that here. He's not going to be casual about it like he would be in a civillian setting.

You yank the gun downward and fire a shot into the man's leg, causing him to curse and drop down onto his intact knee. From Kaname, you hear a surprised gasp, but the Ayanami girl is calm and silent. She didn't even blink. Is she drugged? The labcoated woman uses the brief moment of your aiming elsewhere to make a run for the exit. Even having reduced the Black Hand commander's fighting capacity to such an extent, you still consider it too risky to let him out of your sights. You make no attempt to stop her, instead keeping your aim steady on the man.

"What did you do with them? Why did you single them out from the rest?" You ask, stating it less as a tentative request and more as a direct order.

The man looks up to you, grinning bitterly. "These girls are special, and you know that, otherwise you wouldn't have burst in to save them. The tests we were running on them were to determine whether they were Whispered."

"Whispered?" You say. "What does that mean?" But there's no time to answer. Indiscriminate machine gun fire bursts through the doorway. You yell for the girls to get down and find cover, and return fire.

MEANWHILE...

You are MICHAEL WALTER, and you're waiting in the Cu Chulainn's hangar for the final checkup of your AS units to finish. Mao and Weber are engaged in a discussion.

"Think he's gonna be OK? Our quiet but fierce little dude?" Kurz asks as he throws back his hair, looking up at Melissa, standing on a ladder next to her AS.

"If you mean Sousuke, I wouldn't worry. He's been through worse things than this op, he'll make it through it."

"No, no", Weber waves her off impatiently, "I mean, you know, the thing he's got going on with little miss Kaname. The budding love affair."

Melissa stares back at him. "I don't know what the hell you're talking about. Sousuke's a professional. He knows our mission is to save the passengers. That takes priority. He's not going to run off on some wild goose chase and risk compromising it for Kaname's sake."

"We'll see." Kurz crosses his arms. "I know if I were in his place, I'd forget all about my sworn duties and storm off to be a hero instead." He looks at you. "Or what do you think, Major? Would you forsake the mission for the cause of love?"

That depends on the mission, really. I've had orders that I thought were boneheaded to begin with, and if they would lead to the death of someone I cared about I'd conveniently forget about them.

If the mission was reasonable, I'd do everything in my power to do both. I'm not a believer in the no win scenario.

>>
>>32470409
Note that this post is not supporting the option.
>>
"I gotta say, I've never been faced with a choice like that in my career," you reply, "and I suppose I should be thankful for that, because if it had been about real love, I would have given everything else up in a heartbeat. So I guess I'm lucky to not have any of that mess get into my professional life."

"I have faced orders that were wrong, immoral or plain stupid," you continue, "that would have put people I cared about or was responsible for at risk had I followed them to the letter. And when it came to those situations, I always found it easier to forget about them or pretend I only got the parts of them that made sense to me."

You look around the hangar, and notice Maria is also listening to the conversation, standing by the side of her mech. The techie waves from behind your own AS, giving you the all-clear signal. Before you turn to get ready for launch, you find a conclusion to the topic. "And I suppose, if an order forces you to choose between duty and love, then to be honest it was kind of a worthless order to begin with."

"Good point, Major." Melissa says, before turning to climb into her AS. Your team clears final launch preparations and shoots out, flight boosters screaming into the rapidly descending night.

As you fly off, you notice yourself humming that old Meatloaf song.

I liked the way they laid it out, with 4 different worlds where different settings are integrated well instead of one world where everything is crossed over into a gigantic clusterfuck. Unlike the SRWE team (I think - or maybe I got it wrong), I plan to have the MC and collected party go through all the arcs.

>The quest format focuses on narrative and allows you to replay scenes from favorite series in much greater resolution than the default SRW games. It also allows much more interaction with the crew.
