You are John James Green, mutant vagrant.

You swallow hard. The barrel of the gun seems to yawn out, stretching through your vision. You don’t have that… jolt… all up in your spine yet, so she’s not pulling the trigger anytime soon, but you’re not entirely confident in your ability to dodge a spread of shotgun pellets at point-black range, even if you do seem to have some kind of early warning system going on.

Well, anyway, the woman pointing the shotgun at you is Martha Soames, mother to Tildie Soames and wife to Donald Soames – who is currently frozen in a moment of cautious, undecided horror. She just told him to get out of the way, didn’t she? She’s –

“I told you to step aside, Donald!” She says, her voice shaking to and fro.

“Martha…” He raises his hands in that measured, think-before-you-do-something-terrible sort of way. “…This… this probably isn’t the answer here…”

Why was JJ so scared of Rogue knowing about the dock incident?

What metals can JJ's claws cut through at level 1?

If JJ grew up in a world without mutants (he's not a mutie either), what would he be like?

What did Joyce think about the X-Men and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants? Same for JJ's and Joyce's mother too.

How long have the superheroes been around in HMQ? Like when did it all first start in the recent years?

What versions of the X-Men and Brotherhood are you using, if you can tell us? Like what versions of each character?

If JJ was going to be given a power ring, which color would it be?

While reading Ultimate X-Men, apparently 1610 Rogue is a fan of Marilyn Manson. So maybe this Rogue is too, possibly.

Pretty sure it won't be us in trouble. I think the Husband would be more up shit creek than we are.

Anyway, there is something hidden in the basement.

I theorize that their child had a fairly obvious mutation and they're hiding her.

They had to go full Ramsey Parents and claim she was kidnapped/fake a missing child. They let Blonde Phantom help because how would it look if they turned away people trying to help find their daughter? It would not look good at all.

So, it will soon be time to give them perspective.

They can afford to register.

They obviously want to keep their daughter safe.

Its time to give them a heart to heart once the truth comes out and get them to wise the fuck up.

>I would actually find it funny to have the quest end like that momentarily as Crusty took a break for how to continue.
Most QMs will compensate for all player failure, but even of those who don't, they will generally require you to both make bad plans and have bad rolls in order to truly fuck you over.

But keep being paranoid as fuck about failure lurking around every corner, some QMs enjoy it.
>>
>>32461217
That doesn't change anything about the odds of success.
>>
>>32461257

Or Mrs. Soames called the agency to tell them that Mr. Girling is helping, but they say that there is no Mr. Girling affiliated with the Blonde Phantom Detective Agency.

Then she gets spooked, thinking we're some kind of government agent, X-Man, Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, etc. and gets the shotgun.

“Yeah…” You’re going to have to agree with Mr. Soames on this one. You’d rather not get shot. “Um… we kind of went from level zero to level shotgun here…”

She stares furiously at you. Like you’re about to explode, or something. Maybe if you weren’t intimately familiar with it, you’d think this was the I-know-what-you-are-mutie look, but it’s not. It’s more intimate and desperate than that. You find your words suddenly bumping into one another, knotting together in your throat – a big, useless lump of nothing. Very much like you yourself, actually.

“Quiet.” She mutters, her voice perilously low.

“…I can do quiet.” You say, imploringly. You’ve lowered your voice, right? Yeah. “I just don’t think”–

“Quiet!” She shrieks, brandishing the shotgun like a spear. You feel Mr. Soames stepping back beside you. She shakes the weapon in your direction, grinding her teeth. “Just be quiet! Just… just…”

Heart’s pumping like a furnace. Is that yours, or hers? Mortal terror tends to bleed everything into everything else…

You open your mouth.

That urgent, searing bolt of synaptic lightning arcs up your spine. She’s going to pull the trigger.

You shift your weight. The world tips to the side, and then explodes, the flash of the shot tearing across your vision. You feel it rip through your coat, tiny little teeth biting into your flesh, peppering the right side of abdomen with metallic pellets. For a second it doesn’t even hurt, but then you hit the ground, and the pain flashes through you.

You’ve been shot.

The circulatory system in a human in the supine position is not set to make all the blood flow out. Veins weave up and down, and anywhere they weave up is somewhere there won't be any spills from.

You’ve often thought about how you’d react to being shot. Properly shot – not grazed or blasted in the arm or something. You’d imagine up different ways of keeping calm, difference sequences of action. Breathe, check wound, breathe, try to move legs, breathe, etc…

Turns out, the first thing you do is scream. You clench up your stomach, the pain lancing through you like a fire, and scream straight into the Soames’ carpet. You don’t think about anything. You hear shouting. You hear your own voice, trailing away into a hoarse groan.

“…Dear Lord, Martha, dear”

“…I didn’t… he startled me…”

“…first aid kit somewhere…”

“…didn’t mean to pull the trigger…”

You glance down at the wound. Blood flourishes through the torn mess of your jacket. Not as much as you expected, maybe, but still a lot. Bright and fresh. Sort of… orangey at the edges. Like rust. You have to get up. Have to get out of sight. Crawl. Fight. Escape. Survive.

You vanish, invisibility slipping over you, and hear the Soames gasp. You make a valiant attempt at heaving yourself up, but… but you just can’t. The pain is eating at all your thoughts. Tripping you up. Weighing you down. You feel yourself flicker back into reality.

“…one of them, oh Christ…”

“…Donald, Donald, what do we…”

“…going to bleed out in our house…”

The door swings open. You feel yourself shift, someone dragging you by your knees. The lights go out, or fall away, or something, and you tumble down a set of hard wooden stairs, landing in a heap. The air is thick with dust. Bruises everywhere.

Your eyes are heavy.

New York has an explicit castle doctrine. Almost every jurisdiction in this country allows self-defense in your domicile so long as you are not a crazy motherfucker. Criminal prosecution is almost never a problem here and prosecutors don't want to go for "tough cases" since it fucks up their record anyway.

For jurisdictions that don't offer absolute liability from civil lawsuits, you have the comparative and contributory negligence defenses that eliminate essentially all of the liability.

Shoot a kid who knocked on your door to borrow some eggs? That wouldn't fall under negligence defenses since they did nothing wrong. Shoot a drunk who broke into your house? They were negligent.

Got to get up. Got to get away. The night is closing in now, cut along its midsection by a long, angry red horizon. You fumble with your hands, pawing at the dust and the dark, and you feel yourself slip on something, jaw hitting the ground hard. What was that? Something sprung a leak down here? Feels like oil, tastes like iron, like –

Oh.

Right.

It’s you. It’s your blood.

You collapse onto your back. The waves roll over you, whispering in your ears. Suddenly everything is bright white, and you feel yourself falling…

…You hit the bottom of the stairs hard. Dust spirals through your vision. The noise vanishes into the corners of the old house and all is once again silent, once again still. You haven’t disturbed anyone. Midway up the stairs, the window gazes down on you, catching you in a spotlight of ethereal, orangey-red dawn. You can hear the lake whispering to you, out there, beyond the dunes and the long grasses.

You can’t believe you just tripped like that. At least nobody saw you.

What were you doing again?

>[X] Sister.

Oh yeah. Joyce.

You make your way to the living room, where you can hear her setting the table. The dust roils in your path, like a shadow. Dark, clean impressions line the walls – hooks with all the pictures removed.

When you get to living room Joyce is passing dutifully down the table, her hands doling out cutlery but her attention clearly elsewhere. She’s wearing company clothes – the smart shirts, the well-cut jeans. She hates it, but mom insists. All around you, the furniture hides under huge, shapeless white coverings, dust pooling around their outlines. The looming shape of the grand piano is just about visible, squatting under the covers like the phantom of some grim, heavy-set creature. Everything is still. Nobody’s turned on the lights.

“Sis?” You ask. Why are you asking?

“Mhmm? Yeah, Jay Jay?” She replies, in a distracted tone. She’s putting the forks down the wrong way. Upside-down.

They do serve a purpose.

Told by Laura.
About how JJ was killed on his first day as a detective.

>>
>>32463040
We crit-failed on the persuasion attempt, crit-failed on whatever we were going to do afterwards, then were tossed down the stairs to the basement. After getting shot. Then crit-failed the willpower check to stay conscious. Not sure if there's more we can do right now.

>>
>>32463040
>There's only a 0.04% chance of crit failing 4 times in a row in a quest. One more roll couldn't hurt.
The probability of the fourth roll being a critfail is independent of the probability of the first three rolls being critfails. So it's a one in six shot for there to be a critfail now.
>>
>[X] Those forks.

“Um…” You can’t take your eyes off those forks. “…You’re putting the forks down wrong. That’s not how they go.”

She sighs, and moves on. The pale, blue light of the candles seems to shudder at her footsteps.

“Things don’t always work out right.” She says, noncommittally, leaving a fork standing up on its sharp end. It sways awkwardly from side to side, turning slowly, like the hand on a clock. Tick, tock, tick, tock…

At long last, she looks back at you, her face creasing into a disappointed frown.

“You were supposed to be letting the guests in.” She says.

Oh.

“Yo!” Says Kevin, as he waltzes in. Gaby drifts shyly on his arm, waving across the table at your sister. Laura follows them in in silence, Noriko and Lucas and Layla behind them, the last of whom rushes to claim three seats to herself. Noriko laughs and flirts with an indistinct figure in a green tie.

You hear footsteps passing by overhead. That’d be your parents coming down.

Shit. Shit. They’re gonna be pissed when they get downstairs and the cutlery’s all over the place.

You frantically busy yourself with the state of the table, putting right all that Joyce has put wrong, nudging knives into the right place, plucking forks out of the air and placing them down, turning plates over the right way. Candles are burning blue. Were the candles supposed to burn blue?

Nobody really seems to mind you, anyway. They make their way to their places, exchanging little bouts of small talk.

“…love the décor…”

“…gonna be sore in the morning…”

“…you’re so amazing, Doctor Green, you’re so wonderful…”

Doctor Green? You glance down the table and realize that your parents are already here. They sat down before everyone else. Your father smiles lamely at an over-eager, wide-eyed Gaby, Kevin starting to look increasingly bored at her side. Your mother sits amid her tangle of beeps and whirs and rustling tubes, the machines looming over her. She’s talking to Creeper.

“…so thankful for you looking out for my son all these years, really. What did you say you did, again?”

“I’m a chemist.”

“Chemist!” Her eyes light up. “You know, our JJ has such a knack for the sciences…”

“Tisk, tsk, tsk…” Joyce flitters by, eying you sardonically. “Some things are just out of our control.”

She nods down to the cutlery.

It’s broken. You broke it.

“I’m…”

What have you done?

Look at this. Look.

“I’m sorry, I just…” What? Just what? “…I just wasn’t thinking, and I…”

You trail off. No-one’s listening. Nobody cares. On the chair beside you, Joyce shrugs lackadaisically. Her eyes are black. Blood pools through her shirt, running in long, dark lines down her chin.

Oh. Okay.

Tentatively, you sit down at your seat. Laura and Kimura are sitting opposite you. They’re kissing. Your sister nudges you suggestively, making it very, very hard to ignore the egregious display of affection.

As the silence passes around you, you realize that there’s no food. Nothing. Oven hasn’t been on.

You can’t help but feel vaguely futile. And sort of cheated.

“Where’s the grub?” You ask, turning to your sister.

Her blood soaks through your coat as she leans in over you, stinging your wounds. She whispers something in your ear, and slowly, achingly, you feel yourself heaved up onto the table. Peter drives the first knife in, just under your thigh. The flesh slips off in long, steaming strips. You scream, you scream and scream and scream, and you see Laura staring down at you, green eyes blazing hungrily, and she closes her teeth around your throat…

…You awaken in a writhing, panicked fit of coughing, it slowly coming to you that you’re not on a table, not being eaten. You’re just somewhere dark. The whole world rumbles around you, the air pressing in close, warm and uncomfortable. You think you feel… leather… pressing against your cheek? Something like leather.

The sounds settle in to coherent patterns, sketching out tires burning across road, and your eyes start to adjust to the dark.

You’re in the back of a car. The very back. Someone’s chucked you in a trunk.

You very nearly panic, but it comes to you, through the rising sea of nerves, that your side doesn’t hurt anymore. You shift awkwardly, moving to dab at the wound, but find only the barest traces of scarring. You’re all healed up, and you think you actually spat out all those pellets – you think you can feel them rolling around in the trunk with you.

That’s good.

The air is thin, but you don’t feel lightheaded. In fact, you’re feeling quite limber. You quietly test your abilities, running down through invisibility to that weird static-y sticky thing with your hands. Everything seems operational.

As you feel yourself calming down, the car shudders to a stop. Someone shifts up in the front, and a door opens, heavy, ponderous feet stepping out. You recognize the scent of Mr. Soames.

There’s something else, though. Something awful. The air outside is thick with it.

Damn near every single car in production since a couple decades ago has a thing in the trunk that you pull and it opens the trunk. Only some really high end luxury cars don't have them for some reason.

If there isn't one in this trunk, then this dude is either driving some fancyass car or he purposefully removed it because he's a serial murderer.

Check for the pull thing. If it's not there and this car doesn't look like it costs a fuckin' fortune and it isn't old as dirt, then this dude is one sketchy motherfucker.

>[X] Taser.

He trudges around the car. Feet are on dirt, not tarmac. You can hear the difference. It’s… deeper. More impressionable. Keys jangle in his hand.

His weight bears down on the top of the trunk, and you hear a long, tired sigh. He’s quaking very slightly. His heart is beating fast, pushing blood through his veins at breakneck pace. You can feel it pounding at the palms of his hands, drumming through the metal. You can almost see the ripples.

You hold your breath, but quickly remember that not everyone has your sense of hearing. No point really. His blood must be hitting his ears so hard, the world might as well be mush. You know the feeling. The guilt, the strange, shameful excitement. Sounds like murder, or at least manslaughter. It’s the sound of everything gone wrong and the whole body, the whole mind, struggling to fit itself into the contours of a profoundly altered universe. The laws of reality change and no part of you is quite ready for it yet.

Well, as relatable as his rhythm is, you’re not taking any chances with the guy.

You press your hands up against the trunk and let the volts flow. On the other side, Mr. Soames yelps spastically and you hear him sprawl through the dirt. Curling up tight – tighter than you knew you could go, actually – you pull your legs back and slam them into the metal above. The top of the trunk snaps free, springing off into the air.

The sky is dark outside. You smell old, wet plywood and various assortments of rancid leftovers. Mr. Soames groans on the ground.

-are you hiding her because she's a mutant or some other kind of super human?
-Why try to stash my body? Dead Mutie in your house sounds like a solid piece of self defense even if BP spoke up on my supposedly deceased behalf?

If he asks why we zapped him.

We don't really have any evidence of her being a mutant.

Could be they're just keeping her locked up in the basement because one or both of them are nuts, it's happened before.
Might not even be her.

>Why try to stash my body? Dead Mutie in your house sounds like a solid piece of self defense even if BP spoke up on my supposedly deceased behalf?
They probably just don't want to draw attention to their house. We told them we where working for the detective agency. Sure we're just another mutant to the police but the blond chick would have stepped in to investigate closer.
>>
>>32464616
Like she wouldn't after us mysteriously disappearing...
>>
>>32464673
The Blonde Phantom isn't stupid. She had already figured out we're the mutant that was in the news paper. She knows we ratted out Creeper and that he's probably after us.

If the Sloams said that JJ never made it to the house she might assume Creeper got to us.

You stumble out of the trunk, surveying your surroundings.

Stocky, broad apartment blocks cluster all around, walling you off from the horizon. You’re in what appears to be an old lot, probably cleared out a long while ago to make way for construction work. The places is crowded with rubble and miscellaneous bits of junk. There’s a set of looming, bright yellow rubbish tips lined up further into the lot. You’d hazard a guess that one of them was your ultimate destination.

Soames props himself up on one elbow, nursing his head.

Time for answers. Possibly a mild amount of aggravated assault, too.

Snarling, you heave him up by the collar, claws tearing into his shirt. You feel your fangs pushing through your gums. Blinking back the effects of your electrical touch, Mr. Soames regards you with a mixture of horror and relief, his breath sharpening.

“You… you were… dear Christ, your eyes…”

You blink, and realize that your glasses must’ve slipped off in the trunk.

Well, whatever. Apparently your eyes freak people out now, and you’re feeling like that’s a good thing right now.

“You shot me.” You say, hissing it out. “Why’d you shoot me?”

“I… I didn’t…”

“Why?” You feel a roar bunching in your throat, like a mass of sinew preparing to flex.

“…Nobody intended to. I didn’t think my wife was that… that spooked. You just got too close to the basement. She panicked. I found our first aid kit, but…” He trails off, staring into your eyes. “…but you weren’t breathing. I thought she’d killed you.”

Right. Well then.

“What’s in the basement?” You ask. Oh, wait, why even bother? “It’s your daughter, isn’t it?”

Slowly, he nods.

“She’s… she’s like you.” He says, talking slowly, carefully. “She’s a mutant. We’re, we’re not hurting her, I swear, we’d never. We’re not… neither of us have ever hated mutants. Martha thought that if you found her, it’d go to the police, and they’d take her away…”

>[X] “Why not register her? You’re not poor.”
>[X] “Why the basement?”

You grimace. You understand that. You remember watching the word turn strange and predatory, staring into the TV, into this weird, scary place that wanted to take your sister way. You remember wondering why anyone (anyone that never had to share a bathroom with her, anyway) would ever want to hurt Joyce, and just being completely fucking stomped by the terrifying strangeness of it all.

Still, the Soames could clearly afford a nice house in a good neighborhood. Why couldn’t they afford registration?

“You didn’t get her registered?” You frown a little. That feels weird, coming out of your mouth. Your unregistered and very much against registration mouth. “You’re not poor. You could afford a private eye.”

He shakes his head bitterly.

“We… we looked it all up on the internet.” He pauses, licking his lips. Fear has a way of drying those out. “How to register, I mean. There are these… these degrees, uh, degrees of danger. And Tildie…” His brow falls. “…Tildie must’ve been near the top. They don’t let mutants like her just walk around.”

Yeah. Yeah, you’ve heard of that. The levels have names – Alpha, Beta, stuff like that.

You gotta admit, that makes you kinda curious. What kind of power did little Tildie Soames have?

“Why the basement?”

“She’s….” He strains to explain. You can see the contours of stress and shame and fear all over his face. “She’s dangerous to be around at night.”

Why extort them for something we ALREADY do for free? We let a bunch of freeloaders hang around us, and don't expect a dime while they try and get a hang of their powers. Extorting these people for money, even if they shot us, doesn't feel like something JJ would do.

>[X] Powers

Okay, now you’re super-duper curious. You can’t just drop all these hints and fail with the payoff. Gotta be fire where there’s smoke.

“What can she do?”

For a moment he just breathes in and out, staring inward, his brow working uncertainly. Briefly, you think you might’ve stumped him, that his harried mind his grasping desperately for something to produce on the spot, something bad – turning people into bees, or boiling bodily fluids with her voice, or turning everything around her poisonous, something like that.

But then he opens his mouth.

“She makes her nightmares real.”

Wait. Rewind.

“What?”
>>
>(2/2)

“Her… her nightmares. She makes the things she sees in her nightmares real. They just…” He stutters around a bit, the absurdity of it emerging as a short, slightly manic chortle. “…They just pop out of her head.”

Whoa. That’s different.

Letting your claws tear through his shirt, you drop him to the ground. He hits the ground with a heavy, sullen thud.

Tildie Soames makes her nightmares real. The long, dusty table and the covered-up furniture come to you out of the dark. You see that hungry, inhuman look in Laura’s eyes, that veering, flickering blue flame… And then you imagine that all just clawing its way straight out of your brain, worming and tearing and eating its way into reality.

You shudder a little. Suddenly the odd scale or two doesn’t seem so bad.

Rolling your options around in your head, you stare out into the dark, and it hits you.

It’s very dark. Very night-time looking.

You pull your phone out of your jacket and glance at the time:

>Present Time: 9:30 PM.

Ah. Ah shit.

>>
>>32460819
Because he murdered someone. Sort of.

Basically none.

Hmm. I donno. He'd probably just be a rather thoughtful university student at the moment.

Mixed feelings. It's hard not to root for both when you're muties, but TV and everything is constantly telling you they're the bad guys.

First mutants appeared publicly during Vietnam. First 'superheroes' were the Invaders, during WWII. First modern superheroes were the FF.

This will take a whole post to answer. Later.

Red or Blue, I guess?

Maybe.

That is a matter of interpretation.

The money was important.

And it wasn't put on the backburner, since he tried to go to college dealer next. Only then was it dropped after he had rage problems.

The fact that it was dropped doesn't detract from the point at all. JJ is already a criminal by existing. He also commits and attempts many crimes, but doesn't want to be in Creeper's claws again.
