PREVIOUSLY on SRW /tg/:

You are MAJOR MICHAEL WALTER, ace mech pilot and veteran of the Tiberium War. Fighting terrorists in Azadistan, you discovered and fended off a seemingly impossibly huge mech that was shielded with a mysterious energy field.

Witnessing the mysterious unit brought you to the attention of MITHRIL, a secret organization dedicated to safeguarding and controlling the proliferation and development of dangerous technologies of unknown origin. You and your squad have been brought on board the Mithril airborne command ship, the Cu Chulainn, and introduced to its captain, teenage prodigy Teletha Testarossa.

CURRENTLY you are in your quarters, a cramped room with a small desk and a bunk bed. The ship is on the way to Aidoneus Island to monitor and provide security for the EOTI Conference.

You decide you've had enough of being cooped up inside. Looking over the map of the ship, you find a room marked SIMULATOR above the main cargo hold. You decide to make your way there.

It doesn't take long to traverse the length of the Kodiak-class ship. As you walk, you pass members of the crew doing minor repairs, jogging through the corridors, and talking quietly. The ship runs like a well-oiled machine, seemingly efficient and neat.

You step through the doorway into the simulator room. Inside you see several sim units - large, vaguely bubble-like and covered in wiring, these are cockpit emulators with haptic feedback.

"Hey, Major!" A smiling Katina Tarask waves at you from a hatch in one of the simulators. Somehow, you had an inkling that she'd be here.

You step inside one of the sim units and strap yourself in the pilot's seat. This cockpit unit can be adjusted to emulate all currently available models of walker, Arm Slave and Personal Trooper.

"WELCOME TO TC-OS", the monitors display. "SELECT UNIT":

You cycle through available options. For a brief moment you concider the GDI Titan, if nothing else than for nostalgia's sake. You remember the lumbering walkers and their unstable, finicky control systems, the constant recalibrations and extra maintenance hours that had to be spent on them. It didn't take long for the early walkers to be replaced by AS technology, however, and by now, most Titans are scrap or museum pieces.

Right now, though, you're more interested in the future than the past. Selecting the GESPENST option, you watch the cockpit reconfigure, as several monitors slide up to form a composite viewscreen in front of you. The operating system and controls of this mech are unfamiliar, different from what you're used to. It'll take some getting used to, but you want to learn more about the prototype unit.

The front screens come to life, displaying a mostly featureless landscape. In the distance, another Gespenst, colored bright red, looms.

"Well, Major! Picking the Gespenst? I figured you've got good taste." Katina's voice rings out in your headphones. "I don't think you've been trained in piloting a PT, though, Sir. Want a little crash course first?"

"Sure, Lt," you reply. "I'd like to know as much as possible about this machine."

"Alright Boss." Katina's Gespenst approaches yours, (from looking at the limbs at least) seems to be painted white. "Here's some pointers. One, the PT has a macro maneuvering system. You can basically set up an attack or evasive pattern and trigger it with hotkeys or vocal commands. You hardly need to touch the controls while a saved maneuver executes, just set the target point and watch it happen. Word of warning, though, smart opponents figure out the pattern and start dodging or countering, so make sure you have a few different versions for each attack."

Having explained that, the Lieutenant shows off the punch maneuver you saw her finish off the Tieren with in Azadistan. "See? It does most of the movements automatically when I shout the attack name." Katina smiles at you from the vidscreen in the left bottom corner of the monitor. "Now, point two. The Gespenst is a bit larger than AS and mobile suit types, so it's well suited for close range attacks. It's better armored, too, but it's not slower. I like a mech that lets me close in fast and punch the bad guys' heads off. Oh, and three," the blonde continues, "the Gespenst has a plasma cutter. You should try it out, it's pretty cool."

Katina's mech dissolves into pixels, but her voice still fills your ears. "I'm gonna do a combat scenario, Sir. Once you've figured out the controls, why don't you join me for a friendly spar?"

You look down at the unfamiliar controls. Let's see how different this mech really is...

You consider engaging tutorial mode, but decide against it. Can't be that different from the other models you've piloted before, you think. As your mech takes its first stumbling steps, you quickly realize how mistaken that assumption was. The joysticks don't seem to control leg movement at all, just the torso. Instead, the legs seem to be operated with pedals. With Katina's explanation about macros, you at least know what the keyboard in the arm rests is for, but you still have no idea how to use it.

There's no choice. You have to use THAT... before you embarass yourself any further. You press a combination of buttons to bring up a menu on the simulator screen and select the one thing you never thought you'd use.

TUTORIAL MODE

Katina's face pops up in your vidfeed again, slightly flustered. "Well, that was fun. So, Major, how'd it go?"

"Great." You manage to squeeze out a reply. The Lieutenant doesn't seem to notice you said it through gritted teeth.

"Well, then, Sir. How about that challenge?" "Sure," you hear yourself saying. "Let's go now, Lt."

You could take some time to select a different mech. One you're more familiar with. One you didn't just embarass yourself thoroughly in. But no, you think. Screw that. Gespenst or bust. You'll even do that stupid attack shouting thing if you can get it to work.

Katina's mech takes up a combat stance in the distance. She's smiling at you through the vidcomm screen. "You got balls, Major, I'll give you that. I'm not gonna go easy on you just because you're learning. Best way to teach a man to swim is dump him in the water, like my dad used to say."

She's getting ready to charge. The engine's flaring up in a whitish haze of plasma.

The red Gespenst screams towards you, proximity alarms and target lock warnings ringing out in your cockpit. There's little time to think and less to waste. A quick reaction is needed. You jink to the left and burn the leg-mounted vernier thrusters for a half second to get out of melee range. An impressive maneuver, you think, for someone that couldn't even move this pile of junk properly.

But Katina reads your intent. Adjusting her course, she closes the distance with a rapid maneuver. You see the fist of her mech glowing hot with plasma right before it hits you. Warning sirens blare.

The cluster submunition system marked on yourscreen as SPLT MSL comes to life. Rocket-propelled canisters roar towards Katina's PT and fragment into smaller projectiles, enveloping the mech in a haze of explosions. You move away from the blast, looking to get a good firing position and to put some distance between her and you, negating her advantage. You're itching for a rematch. But you know well enough that if you try to fight her in a Gespenst again, you'll just get soundly beaten again.

As the shaking and blaring inside the cockpit subsides, you switch off the sim unit and open the hatch, stepping outside. Looking at Katina's pod, you see her head looking out of an opened hatch. She climbs up on the sim bubble, gives you a thumbs up and jumps down onto the floor.

"Well, Major, this was fun. Nice going with the Gespenst. I didn't think you could get it moving this fast." Katina says to you as you both leave the simulator room. You nod. "Thanks. That system is completely different from the haptic feedback unit that Arm Slaves and mobile suits use. How long did it take you to get proficient with it?"

Katina turns away to wipe the sweat off her brow with a small towel, then looks back to you to reply. "About 3 months, Sir. Lamia took to it much faster, though. She got it in less than 3 weeks. It's like she was born and bred to pilot that particular machine."

"I see." You ponder this information. "So who else has been trained in Gespenst use besides you and Lt Loveless?"

"Well, boss," Katina says, "Russel was scheduled to start qualifying for Gespenst use once the field tests had been completed. He's read the manual and done some sim excercises, but he hasn't taken the proficiency exams yet. Besides us, I heard there's another team that was being trained to use PTs, but I don't know them. Don't even know how many of them there are."

You walk Katina to her quarters, and as she retires to her room to shower, you proceed to leisurely stroll down to the mess hall, where a small bar has also been set up. Russel is there, as well as Lamia, both of them seated around a table talking to a blonde man and Asian woman in Mithril uniforms.

The monitor above the bar is tuned to a news broadcast. You look up to catch the last bits of an interview with an Elzam Branstein, taglined as "Space settlement visionaire".

"Yes, mr Branstein," the interviewer interjects, "and the public was quite awed when your family spent a massive chunk of your considerable fortune to ship the entire Castle Branstein, brick by brick, to one of the currently in-contruction Lagrange habitats. Some may call this extravagant overspending a folly inherent to aristocrats. How would you explain it?"

"I do not wish to explain it." The man's expression changes only slightly, revealing just a fraction of emotion. "It was a folly, of course, an act of romantic nostalgia. In these times, it is all we can do to remain human."

The interviewer pauses, before looking back at the well-dressed, imposing noble. "Well, we can't really dwell on this subject, but I'd like to ask you a different question. Besides your being the scion of a noble line and a pioneer of space exploration, you are also an accomplished cook. I was wondering if you could share some of your favorite recipes with the audience..."

You look away from the screen. Your squad members and the Mithril staff have noticed you and are waving you over.

>You have control.

Grab a drink at the bar and go over to the squad and Mithril people.

I agree. Mao and Kurtz are awesome.

Elzam can't share his favorite recipes! He's the Mystery Gourmet. Technically the Riddle Gourmet, due to a mistranslation (His alter ego's name should be Ratselhafter, not Ratsel) but the point stands. He can't just give those recipes up. The nerve of that interviewer.

Whatever, let's get our mind off such things. Let's head over to the squad and get familiar with the Mithril pilots. Where's Sosuke during this? Is he off at Jindai right now, or is he just not at the bar because he dislikes alcohol?

override!

Speaking of which, what color are we painting our personal suits, and what is our soundtrack?

Agreed, lets be sociable.

Yeah, lets get to know the Mithril people. They're our comrades now, after all.

Good question. For song, I think we should go for something along the lines of 13th Azad Task Force from Gundam F90 (I know that was just a manga, but it appeared in SD Gundam Generation, so it gets its own theme song). It's not hotblooded and dramatic, it's got more of a calm intensity to it. Appropriate for a veteran-style ace, I think.

As for color, we're tacticool. Dark grey and navy. Arm Slaves are frequently deployed for special operations, so looking a bit like a SWAT unit appeals to me.

You know what.. I like it. Great color choice and the song was pretty good too.

You order a beer and join the others at the table. A "Hey Major" from Russel and a whispered greeting from Lamia are the first words to welcome you. The man in the Mithril uniform stands up to shake your hand, face flushed with alcohol. "Major Walter? Sergeant Kurz Weber, and may I say I envy you SO MUCH for how you lucked out with your squad. Seriously, I watched them come on board and the first thing I said to Tessa was "how do I get out of this outfit and into THAT one?" He finally lets go of your hand. The black-haired woman gives him a stony glare, and as she turns her gaze to you you can't help but feel like collateral damage.

"Sergeant Melissa Mao, Sir." She introduces herself quickly and curtly, then sits back down. "I hope Weber's little performance won't affect your judgement of all of us at Mithril. We're actually not all douchebags."

"Oh come on, Mao!" Kurz moans. "You'd have done the same in my place if you'd seen a bunch of hunks come on board, right?" "I'm a professional, Weber." The reply is swift.

You talk for a bit. It turns out these two are Mithril's foremost AS pilots, assigned to test out the newest units in the arsenal, the Gernsback and Falke. While Mao is an urban combat specialist, Weber is a long range support sniper, both in a mech and outside of it.

"We've got another pilot that's really good, especially for his age, but he's on a babysitting assignment right now." Kurz's comment is cryptic but you know better than to ask for details. It's all need-to-know, probably.

Lamia and Russel, Gespenst Kick.

>>32450758
Ask Mao about how Mithril operates.
Need to know their tactics if we are gonna work with them and not be in the way.
>>
>>32450758
Ask Kurtz and Mao if they can talk about operations they've done in the past against stuff like the giant mech we faced earlier.

I'd like to ask Mao and Kurz about the various black technologies Mithril is supposed to police. They've been with the organization for a while, have they seen anything particularly weird? Because we really need to know what to expect. Was that giant, force-fielded Behemoth the norm around here or an exception to the rule?
>>
>>32450758
Can we get SOP from Mao?
A briefing on all the wacky bullshit we're likely to encounter would also be helpful.
