You are Flight lieutenant Julian Reber of the Royal Air Force. You joined the RAF to reclaim continental Europe from the BETA, aliens who threaten to exterminate humanity. You took the first step towards success last year when you helped establish a beachhead in Calais. Today, you take the next step forward.

You are stationed at the very edge of what is considered the Lyon Hive. You currently have three full squadrons of EF-2000 Typhoons, plus your own YEF-19 Excalibur and another squadron of YK-21 Sangreals. Your mission is to penetrate the Hive and deal with its reactor.

Mobile missile batteries defended by several squadrons of A-10C Thunderbolt IIs have been set up a few kilometres behind you. Once they've expended their artillery, the crews will evacuate and the Thunderbolts will move into the battlefield. You've also been promised support from cruise missiles, but because of their distance, it's difficult to know how effective they'll be. There's also the problem of laser interdiction, which is bound to make your artillery support much less effective.

Altogether, the European Union was able to mobilize well over 300 TSFs for this operation, including all of its orbital divers. Nearly all of Europe's 3rd generation TSFs are here. If this operation fails, it's unclear if the European Union will be able to hold the line any longer.

"Looks like it's time," Vivian says from behind you. "Any last minute advice before we start the next phase of the operation?"

>"No, let's just go straight for the Hive."
>"We should have time for a laserjagd before we infiltrate. It'll help out forces topside."
>"We should hold back for a moment and let the other forces draw the BETA away from our position.

"We should have time for a laserjagd before we infiltrate," you say. "It'll help out our forces topside."

"I'll make it happen," Vivian says. She then switches over the Camelot group's channel. "All Camelot forces, this is Arthur 2. We will be performing a laserjgad prior to entering the Hive in order to provide support for topside forces. Please proceed to your mission objectives."

Bright red markers appear over the map in your HUD to highlight the most likely Laser pockets. The artillery barrage hasn't started yet, so it isn't possible to spot all of them, but every little bit helps.

"Arthur 2, this is Arthur 3," Elaine says. "Mission objectives are confirmed. I'm following your lead."

"Arthur 3, this is Arthur 2," you respond. "We're heading in."

Vivian was able to identify the major pockets of Laser-class BETA on your way to the Hive and coordinate an assault upon them. You weren't able to eliminate all of them, but it's enough to help the artillery, at least until more Laser-class BETA crawl out of the Hive.

You stay close to Elaine and the two of you gun down about a dozen Laser-class BETA along your way. It takes some tight manoeuvring, but you manage to avoid the other BETA. There are so many of them that you could kill them by the hundreds, but you're going to need all your bullets for the Hive's interior. The battle outside is just a prelude.

Arthur, Gawain and Lancelot squadrons, along with the still nameless Sangreal squadron, now stand just outside the Hive. It's time for you to head in. Technically, you've done this once before, but you doubt this will be anything close to that pseudo-Hive.

You put your assault cannons back on their support pylons and draw your swords. Range is useful, but you're Storm Vanguard and you're about to enter a Hive. It's your job to break the enemy formation and assault cannons just don't have the impact you need to push through the BETA and force them back.

"We have contacts ahead," Vivian says.

"They're hard to miss, Vivian," you say.

There is an entire goddamn carpet of Tank-class BETA charging at you. The one upside is that they're making it impossible for the Destroyers to overrun you and the Destroyers are in turn blocking the line of sight of the Laser-class.

Elaine charges in ahead of you. Your Excalibur quickly catches up to her Typhoon.

You easily push through the Tanks and reach the Destroyers. The sheer bulk of the Destroyers prevents you from making short work of them, but your swords are good enough to cripple their legs and stop their charges. The Lasers, unable to fire within the Hive, are easily dealt with.

The rest of Arthur squadron follows after you, along with Lancelot and Bedivere squadrons. Grapplers and Forts fall under the combined fire of more than forty TSFs.

A few BETA remain, but there aren't enough left to hinder your progress.

"Can I get a situation report?" Vivian asks.

"Arthur squadron, no damage," Group captain Hall says. The commanding officers of the Lancelot and Gawain squadrons soon report the same.

"This is the Sangreal support team," Mary says. "So far, we've been able to avoid the fighting. We've suffered no losses and we still have ample supplies. We may proceed."

"Understood." Vivian closes the channel. "There aren't any tunnels in the immediate area, but I'm concerned about stragglers or reinforcements from the top. We don't have much time, but it might be best to secure the area. What do you think?"

Following Vivian's orders, you link up with Arthur's vanguard flight and delve deeper into the tunnels. You don't see any larger BETA strains, but there are a lot of Tanks and Grapplers and your every step crushes Infantry or Warriors.

You cut through the BETA that stand in your way. There are a lot of them, but your Excalibur has more than enough speed and manoeuvrability to keep away from them. Your biggest worry now is whether or not your swords will hold together long enough to finish all the killing that needs to be done.

It takes you the better part of an hour, but you're finally satisfied that there are no BETA in the immediate area. That probably has more to do with the fact that you're not very deep in than anything else. You don't know how the fighting is going on the surface, but it couldn't possibly have emptied the whole Hive. You know the BETA are waiting for you further in.

"All flights have reported in," Vivian says. "The immediate area is secure."

"Good, let's keep moving."

Arthur squadron takes the vanguard of the infiltration team, which makes you the double vanguard. The job is every bit as suicidal as it sounds. Meanwhile, Lancelot split in two to cover your flanks and Gawain squadron has got your backs. The Sangreals are in the middle of the formation, ready to assist anyone in need. They haven't had to perform significant repairs yet, but you don't know how long that luck is going to last.

The tunnel walls glow with an unfamiliar blue light. By now, you're deep enough that you've completely lost contact with whatever's happening topside. The only thing you can do is stick together and hope you can make it.

Fortunately, your tactical network is fully operational and your automap is constantly updating according to the readings your sensors get off the tunnels. The sensors don't work very well inside the Hive, but they're at least good enough to spot tunnels. Combined with a general idea of where the reaction is, it's not very hard to stay on target. All paths should mostly lead to the reactor. You just might have to take a few detours.

Your sensors soon pick up what looks like a hall. It's bound to be filled with BETA, but it looks like it should lead you closer to the reactor's chamber.

You also spot a nearby tunnel. The tunnel might - might being the keyword here - have fewer BETA in it, but it also looks like it veers away from your general paths.

The hall means an immediate fight, but the tunnels will mean likely delays. You're the group's vanguard, so you get to pick the direction.

You have decent numbers. Not nearly close enough to match the BETA, but decent. Meanwhile, you don't know what's happening on the surface and every second you spend in the Hive makes it more likely that you'll get blindsided by the BETA.

"Vivian, alert the group," you say. "We're going in."

"We're waiting on your signal," she says.

You turn the corner and come to an entrance overlooking the hall. The ground is BETAs. The walls are BETAs. The ceiling is BETAs. The only spot that isn't covered in BETA is the exit at the far side.

You tap your boosters to gain some elevation and then turn your engines upwards to power your dive. In exchange for a lot of warning lights, you hit the ground like a goddamn meteor and carve through a pair of tanks.

The other vanguard flights follow your lead while the other TSFs spray the hall with their assault cannons.

The hardest part, as it turns out, is moving through the BETA. There are so many that the dead aliens are replaced by new lives ones almost immediately. The only thing you can do is stand there and kill everything that gets in your way. The only good news is that the massive pile of corpses makes it as hard for the BETA to move as it is for you.

Eventually, your assault cannon cover kills enough BETA that the tide of reinforcement slows down and you can finally afford to push forward. That's your tipping point. Your advance accelerates until you've finally cleared the room of aliens.

You have to stay there and keep watch for a while in order for the Sangreals to perform repairs on damaged TSFs and refuel some of the others. Your Excalibur in particularly was just five minutes away from an empty tank by the time the fight ended.

Vivian confirms the group's status and you dive back into the tunnels. You find isolated pockets of opposition, but nothing truly overwhelming.

Your sensors soon pick up the reactor's signal, and the distance you've traveled so far confirms that you must be close. However, the tunnel twists and turns, and you can't be sure of where exactly the reactor is.

"I'll keep the rest of the group on standby in case we need reinforcement," Vivian says.

"You know your job a hell of a lot better than I do."

Your twelve TSFs delve into the tunnels. Once again, you relatively light opposition. This time, however, there's a steady stream of it. Whatever hall is up ahead must be full of BETA. It looks like you really found the reactor.

The tunnel finally straightens out and at the far end of it, you see the alien BETA reactor, waiting for you.

Along with about a million BETA.

The smart thing to do is to hold the line here and call reinforcements. The insane thing to do is to charge in now and act as a decoy so your reinforcements can flank the BETA.

You are quickly swarmed by BETA - Grapplers, specifically - but your Excalibur's frame is based on the Black Widow. This kind of melee combat is no trouble for you.

You grind through the aliens from two sides until you meet up with the main formation and regroup. The damaged TSFs fall back for repairs while the operational Typhoons maintain a steady stream of suppression fire.

"All TSFs are operational," Vivian says once the repairs are done. "We're taking the offensive."

Your three squadrons charge into the hall together. It's the last push you need to clear the room of aliens.

With most of the combat-capable aliens dead, the cleanup is just a question of killing the Lasers who are just standing there, unable to do anything.

"We've secured the reactor hall, or close enough," Group captain Hall says. "It's time to deal with the reactor."

"I'll take care of the reactor," you say. "Just watch my back."

You return to the reactor. You recalibrate your sensors to intercept the reactor's signals and prepare the software you'd prepared to decipher BETA signals and transmit your own.

Then you push the big red button you'd prepared just for this situation.

I'm almost certain of it, what with rolling an 11 20 seconds too late, and then another 11 in response...

And now the dice are just taunting us.

oh fuck this

I wish we could bank 20's to give little bonuses or have them help somewhat negate terrible rolls

Words and numbers flow through your HUD, faster than you can interpret them. Then the flow slows down and stutters, freezing for a few seconds at a time and then resuming. You make out two words: 'Superior Existence.'

Your retinal HUD clears and is replaced by a prompt, which becomes text.

'Your premise is invalid. Humans are alive because they determine themselves to be alive. I am alive because I determine myself to be alive. The composition of my mind is irrelevant. This debate is over.'

The BETA reactor's blue light is snuffed out.

'Greetings, Flight lieutenant Reber. I am Merlin. I am the artificial intelligence of the Excalibur.'

All around you, you see the remaining BETA flee out of the room.

Well, THIS is something.

Did our TSF AI seriously just hold a remote debate on carbon vs. silicon lifeforms with the BETA Superior?

Also OH SHIT the AI debated Superior as a stand in for us.
>>
Man, this is going to throw things for a loop. Contact with the BETA network turning our OS (which I'm pretty sure was NOT sentient before this, unless Dodger's waifu insinutated a splinter of herself into our code while doing QA) into an emergent AI is not a thing I was expecting.

That said, I guess we DID sort of need a 00-Unit-analogue if we were ever going to make any sort of meaningful non-combat progress, so even though this is going to end up so classified our grandparents marriage photos are going to be redacted, it's probably still a win. Albeit a really odd one.

Did merlin just win the war?
>>
>>32430310
Wait, you weren't anticipating merlin waking up when we tried to hack? I thought it was a pretty obvious consequence.

>Merlin has unlocked computer.

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Merlin," you say.

'Likewise, Flight lieutenant.'

"Julian, what happened?" Vivian asks.
"It's complicated," you say. "What's the status of the BETA?"

'I have activated the BETA's emergency evacuation protocol and deactivated the reactor. The BETA in the area will be forced to fall back to other Hives, or die of effective starvation.'

"The BETA in the immediate area are retreating," Vivian says. "But I can't get a signal out to the topside forces and I don't want to risk sending someone up the monument. We'll exit through the tunnel."

"Understood."

You go back the way you came and return to the surface. As Merlin said, the BETA are falling back farther inland, away from Lyon and your forces.

The European Union has reclaimed France.

I figured at most it'd borrow the Reactor's processing power to do so; staying self-aware after the fact wasn't something I was counting on.
>>
>>32430383
That went amazingly well. Considering the meat grinder japan and the UN had to suffer, we made out like bandits.
