You were once the most powerful man to ever walk your planet. Your empire was the scourge of all who opposed you, and your magics made you a god among men. At the cusp of victory, all of that has been taken away from you, and you have been banished to a strange new world.

While your assets may be denied, your ambition has not. In the former world as well as this, you shall rule.

General rules:

There is a 10 minute voting period after each post. Non-contradictory votes will be combined as best as possible. There are occasional roles to keep things organic, but mostly it goes by voters choice. Unless specified otherwise, the best of 3 rolls is the result, and rolling high is good.

Write-ins for all votes or always welcome and encouraged. Put your own spin on it, suggest dialogue, add an addendum, or anything else. Just because some options specify to write in, doesn't mean that they aren't welcome for anything else. They may not all make it into the post or be altered to fit in, but I'll do my best to at least try to address the spirit of the write-in.

Frank nods and walks down to the start up the car while you turn back to your victim, local businessman Conrad T. Hamilton.

“Listen here you pathetic piece of excrement” You say to man, gripping his neck “Despite what may follow, lets get this straight. You will work for me. For, now you shall continue to do what you do best. Your business will not be harmed. But every week, I shall return. And when I do, you shall give me tribute, the amount of which I shall determine. Do this, and you will be allowed to live unmolested. Do we have an understanding? You ask.
The frightened man gulps and nods. “Good.” You smile, before punching him so hard he blacks out.

As you walk down to the car (is this the correct name?) with your hostage in bound, you look back at the street and memorize the name. 14 Grove Street. Meanwhile, Frank raises a brow and says to you. “What took you so long?”

>Housekeeping post
First of all, sorry for going AWOL for a few weeks. Laptop died, shit went down, finals came and went. Suffice to say life’s been busy. Rest assured I’ll not abandon you guys like a deadbeat dad anymore.

In my absence I’ve been debating on whether to add an upgrade, health or notoriety system to this, but I’ve been having difficulty working them in as I feel they’ll compromise the narrative. Story wise our protagonist is already at the top, for all intents and purposes, and is only handicapped by his absolute lack of knowledge of the modern world. While that’s not to say that there wouldn’t be room for improvement in the magical side of things, should an upgrade system be added, there wouldn’t be as much progression as you’d have in say, Shadow Quest, and I feel like that will lead to a shitty and half assed system.

In the end, I’m still debating on whether or not to do upgrades and notoriety. The latter I’m almost certainly adding, but for the former I’m still very iffy on.

I suppose I could leave it to a vote anyway.

For those who are interested, I am developing a further backstory to this and adding in bits of lore, which will be posted in a either a Google Doc or Pastebin at time that is to be determined.

Any suggestions would be welcome however.

Frank rolls his eyes but says nothing. The two of you enter the car drive back to Sam’s office.

Upon entering the office, you enter, but Frank remains at the door, telling the sleazy lawyer “We got ‘em.”

“Great!” Sam cheerfully replies. “Alright, you know what to do so off you go… So... Shoo!”

“Gotcha.” He responds, before taking your captive to some undisclosed location.

You blink your eyes in surprise at the scene that just unfolded. This constant lack of understanding of what's going on is getting irritating.“Ehm…”

“Don’t worry bout it. He’ll be fine.” Sam decisively answers, his nonchalant attitude at odds with how he acted several hours ago.

You nod in tentative agreement, trying to hide a slight look of confusion.

“Alrighty then!” He leans in and you notice the stench of alcohol on this man. “Been doing a bit of thinking and… I’ve got to ask… you realize the situation you’re in right? Like… you’ve got nothing you know?” He pauses, trying to continue on his apparent rant, while you think of where he could be going with this. You are well aware that you require lodgings and , among other things.

“Yes, I’m aware I require a place to say.” You answer plainly.

“No, no no! Shay you’re not looking at the picture.” The lawyer puts his head down in apparent exasperation. You roll your eyes at the nickname. It appears he’ll never learn. Putting his head back up, he continues his rant. “While you were out doing me a favor, and for the record I’m real thankful you did that, I’ve been thinking about our current predicament. The thing is… you’ve got... nothing. It ain’t just a case of not having a house or a car or a job; you’ve got no papers, no means of identification, no Green Card, social security, working papers, etc! Nothing! Nada! Zip!”

He pauses to catch his breath, before looking you straight in the yes. As far as the government is concerned, you don’t exist. That is literally the worst thing ever.”

You raise a brow in confusion. “So? Why do I need these papers anyway?”

“So?” The lawyer looks at you as if you’ve grown another head on your shoulders” The hell do you mean ‘so’?! Seriously, do you have any idea what this means-” The man abruptly stops, eyes widening upon realizing just who he was talking to. Slamming his head down on the desk, he sighs loudly. “Oh… Right… My bad.”

You can’t help but chuckle at the situation. “Enlighten me then, what’s so important about these papers?

Picking himself off, Sam begins to explain. “Ok, long story short: this country has an absolutely massive bureaucracy and you need papers and forms to do anything. Without then you are an illegal resident of the state, and basically have no rights. The government can, and will do anything they want to you, and if the last few years have been any indication, you’ll be shipped off to some third world hellhole. You certainly look brown enough to be illegal.”

“What is that supposed to mean?” You mutter at the last comment.

Taking the liquor thats been on his desk and pouring himself a shot, the man continues. “Ok, so here’s what we’re gonna do. We’re gonna get you some new papers, a social security number, green card, all that fancy stuff. You’re gonna look like a perfectly legal immigrant and we’ll move you into an apartment. And then we go shopping, because for the love of God you’re are not walking with me looking like some beggar from the Congo.”

“Can you first explain to me what these terms mean?” You reply slightly dumbfounded.

“Oh right. A Green Card is basically a paper that tells you are a permanent resident in this country. Its proof that you’re not a squatter that’s just walked into the country. Social security is a unique number that every person has. It serves as a form of identification, kind of like a signature if you will.” Sam continues, explaining the finer details of their uses, and how identification works. You are somewhat confused at this process at first, but the man at the table takes his time to explain the process in terms you can understand.

“I see.” You reply, understanding the process much better. You are thankful you asked, as this knowledge of the government will go along way to helping you blend in among the populace.

“Now onto the nitty gritty details. We need a plausible backstory for you. While you were out running errands for me I’ve been thinking of a good alibi for you’re here.” He pulls up a folder showing a world map, with some of the countries circled via pen. “These circled countries, are the most common places of immigration, or the places where you’ll have good reason to come here- not that the fact this is the greatest country on God’s Green Earth isn’t enough, but the this pencil pushers here need something better. Obviously you’re not educated- “You scoff at that “- by our standards- so you’re gonna need something nicer. Like political refugee or migrant worker.”

“So, what’ll it be?”

“How about there.” You point to the Middle east.

“I can see it. Yeah, that works” You hear Sam say. “You certainly look the part, although you probably could pass for a Sicilian if you pull it off… Anyways, lets take a bit closer look. The middle east is a really big place, so you’re gonna need to be a bit more specific. Every country has its own story.”

“I would imagine.” You flatly reply.

“Ok smartass, time to choose your own adventure.” Sam gives off a couple detailed stories, explaining the differences between them and the unique situations.

“Put me down as a tribesman. Probably a shepherd or a vendor of fruit or something”

“Really? The emperor of wherever world you’re from wants to put his background as some lowly fruit vender?”

“Yes. At this point why not? I know nothing of this world, I might as well act the part

“Yeah, ok, lets put that down.” So you’re a shepherd/part time fruit vender who managed to migrate from his country, probably as a political refugee. Obviously you knew too much or protested- lets go with that last one- and the government kicked you out, where you flew to America.”

“Why would a kingdom fear a lowly fruit vender? Do they fear he will spark a revolution or something?”

Sam shrugs. “Maybe, you never know how these things turn out. Don’t give me that look, hear me out: You’re a lowly shepherd trying to make a living. Every once and a while your cousin comes back from the farm and asks you to sell some fruits at the local market. These government troops try to take your fruit. You stand your ground. You get your ass beat, but you continue to protest. People see that, and they start protesting as well. You become a symbol. Things go crazy and you have to leave, as the government is scared you’ll start a revolution. Then you run to the nearest American military base.” The man pauses for dramatic effect.

“That’s when America takes you in as a show of its generosity to the natives back home. Meanwhile, you come here, you get your papers punched and live off the glorious American dream. Ha?”

“That sounds like complete idiocy.”

“You have no imagination don’t you.”

“No, I have a sense of what’s realistic and not.”

“Says the guy who a few hours ago thought cars were impossible.”

You suck your teeth but say nothing. A few moments of silence pass as Sam fills out some forms.

“Alright everything’s done. Just one last thing before I finish up. You want a new name or not? Cause from my angle Shaytan doesn’t exactly sound like a realistic name. Sounds like some evil Grand Vizier in a fantasy novel.” You scowl at him, but say nothing. “So… we might need something, at least from my perspective, that’s… uh, realistic. Like Malik or Oman.” He raises his hands in gesture of self defense.

“No.” You simply respond.

“But-” You interrupt him with a terse “No.” The look in your eyes tells him it is non negotiable.

“Fine.” He sighs in defeat and finishes filling out the paperwork. For what seems like an eternity passes, the only sound you hear is the scribbling of a pen. Eventually the boredom is too much, and you fall asleep.

Eventually you are wake up, still on the chair you on yesterday. Minor back pains aside, you feel rather well. You stand up, and take a look at your surroundings.

It seems Samuel has left…. or not. You hear some outside chattering. Moving to the source of the noise, you open the door and move outside the office. Its Sam and his assistant, what’s her name again… Jessie is it?

“Mornin’” The two reply in unison.

“Good morning to you as well.” You reply, slightly yawning it out. “Afternoon.” the young woman corrects.

“Anyways, Shay, good news. I sent in your papers and hooked you up with a place to stay. Also, you’ll be hearing from me from time to time or maybe Frank and his friends for some jobs. It’ll probably be moving shipments and products”

“Thats good.”

“Oh, and one more thing!” He throws you a bag, to which you open it. Further inspection reveals its clothes.

“Yeah… you’re not walking around looking like a bum, so I got you some clothes. You can change in the door to your far left; it’s a bathroom.”

After a quick changing, to your new clothes- a cheap suit similar to the one Sam wears- you walk back to your current… employer.

“So… we got a big day ahead of us. I still need to get you acquainted with modern society, but I suppose we can do that over some lunch. C’mon, I’m buying.”

>You needn't’ do so….
