Welcome to Banished Quest!
You take the role of a young mage, labeled a criminal by his people and cast out into the wider world. In the last thread, you chatted with your companions, evaded a nest of giant arachnids, and finally reached the purification chamber.

You approach the control console, trying to determine just how one is supposed to turn the damn thing on. While trying to decipher the ancient, faded labels below each switch and button you address Chryssa “You go ahead and enter the chamber. We'll take care of everything from here.” She nods and turns to leave, but stops at the door. She faces the part once more and speaks in her typical emotionless tone. “Should I not survive the procedure, I would simply like to say that I have enjoyed my time with the three of you immensely.” She switches from Rhynian to Samjan, addressing Darzi. “I would also wish you the best of luck, Captain.” Profectus scoffs. “Come now, don't be so fatalistic Chrys. I'm sure you'll be fine.”

She shrugs her shoulders. “My father always told me to expect the worst, for I would always be pleasantly surprised.” With her piece said she turns on her heels and marches out of the room. You see her enter the room containing the Purification Chamber a few moments later, and Fulvia flips a switch which causes the doors to slide shut behind her. She glances over her shoulder briefly, and then peers into the control room. She doesn't seem like she can see you, which you find odd. It's just a glass window. Regardless after a short while she proceeds down the narrow hallway towards the chamber proper. As she does so, Fulvia flips another switch and the chamber hatch pops open, slowly lifting itself up to allow Chryssa entry.

Once she's climbed inside the pod Fulvia flips the switch once more and the hatch swings shot, sealing itself off. You're about to ask Fulvia how to start the procedure when the window allowing you a view into the room goes black and a figure is projected onto the screen. It's an alien figure, stretched out and impossibly thin, with long arms and legs and a narrow neck which seems too fragile to support it's bulbous head. A transparent film seems to be stretched out over its innards, which pulse rhythmically with soft light. It lacks a mouth, eyes, or indeed any sort of identifying features.

“Welcome.” When it speaks, its head lights up brightly with each syllable. “Target identifie-fie-fied.” The figure flickers momentarily and the audio skips. “Vys Reserve: Thirty-Six. Corrup-up-uption-tion-tion: 97.63%. Purge Necessary: T-total-al-al. Please pull switch to begin purge.” As it concludes its speech, a small bulb lights up above a large switch in the wall.

>Flip the switch, but keep an eye on Chryssa using your magic sight. Just to be sure.
>Ask Fulvia what she thinks. You'd like a second opinion before you go flipping any switches.
>Just follow the AI's instructions, it was designed to control this process so second guessing it probably isn't all that wise.
>Write-in

>The woman was placed within the device, seriously these reports are starting to piss you off with their lack of details, and was successfully cured of the corruption. Unfortunately the device also drained her of regular, non-corrupted vys and she was reduced to a withered, quite dead, husk.

>Finally you reach the section of the report relating to 'Subject 42'. Considering that the report is stamped with a giant green 'Success!' next to this section of the report, this is probably what you're looking for. If only you'd skimmed ahead, you might have saved time. Apparently all they did here was add in an emergency release button that dropped the filters out of the device. Fairly simple, you're not sure how they didn't think to add something like that to the first draft of the device. The subject was successfully cured of corruption, and once sensors reported that he was clean a technician dropped the filters out of the device.

>Apparently all they did here was add in an emergency release button that dropped the filters out of the device.

So we need to use the emergency release button at the right moment. Lets find it before we begin.

Can we leave this fucking mine already? I don't give a slightest fuck about the Bandit leader. If Darzi wants her revenge then let her go (sans the armor).
How many times have we or someone from our party died already? And for what? Practically nothing.
We already got an entire fortune and then some after looting the bandits.

Sooner or later someone will die and then we'll whine and cry like it wasn't our fault, like we couldn't see it coming.

Welcome to the quest then, we are basically staying here for a chance of loot from the dead bandit leader and to mediate once or twice at the lake.

>>
>>32378558
we really should leave after that, we are way over our head. Darzi is ok and I'd like to have her in the team, but I'm sure even her realize that we risk too much. Actually she probably the first one to realize it.
>>
>>32378657
>Welcome to the quest then, we are basically staying here for a chance of loot from the dead bandit leader and to mediate once or twice at the lake.

I can understand the lake part but not the bandit, we owe nothing to Darzi. She is the sole reason why we decided to go after him, I'm sure. I'm almost confident that if not for her, we would have said fuck this long ago.

>>32378678
Of course rune magic is absolutely worth it, but don't think that Soma wouldn't have given us other opportunities to gain it if we had never come to this mine.
We really need to power level ourself and our allies before doing another expedition like this.
>>
You look from the screen to Fulvia. She's standing next to one of the big red buttons which will activate the kill switch and eject the device's filters. The protective cover has been flipped open and her hand is poised above the button. “What do you think, Fulvia? Can we trust this AI?” She casually shrugs her shoulders. “Perhaps, I would posit that it is experiencing unacceptable levels of rampancy due to limited processing power, thousands of years of disuse, and overexposure to corruption. However, there is no reason to believe it would outright lie.”

You stare at her for a moment, unsure of what she's getting at. “Sooo...?” She clears her throat. “I would pull the switch, were I in your position.” She concludes. You nod your head and approach the switch, grabbing hold of the handle firmly. You begin channeling water magic into your armor, and the walls melt away as the tides of vys fill your vision. Glowing like a miniature sun on the other side of the window is that strange orb suspended above the chamber. It's even brighter through the lens of your magic sight. Chryssa, by comparison, is a faint glow sitting beneath. She appears as a bile yellow silhouette, with a small dot of uncorrupted blue vys at her center.

You flip the switch, and the glowing orb above the chamber flares brightly as it begins to work. You can see Chryssa writhing, likely in pain though you can't hear any screaming, and you watch as the energy is slowly pulled out of her, draining into the chamber before being channeled up to the orb above. That must be the filter, then. You wonder what happens when it's ejected.

>Keep an eye on Chrys and move into position next to the other kill switch. You'll probably want to press the two buttons simultaneously.

You step up to the control console, addressing Profectus without really paying attention. “Prof, get ready to press the other button.” You see his hazy, indistinct figure move into position above the other kill switch out of the corner of your eye, while you remain focused on Chrys. The process is accelerating, you can actually watch Chrys go from a sharply defined silhouette to an increasingly hollow shell.

You hear the AI begin speaking again. You jump involuntarily, you hadn't been expecting it to speak any further. “Purge Initiated-ted-ted. Target Vys: Thirty, Decreasing at Two Vys per second. Activate flush in eleven, ten, nine-” the countdown continues, but something's clearly wrong. She'll be reduced to a lifeless husk long before this countdown reaches zero, the AI clearly underestimated the rate at which the device was draining vys.

It becomes increasingly hard to pick out Chryssa from the glow of the orb hovering above, but you manage to keep yourself focused on her increasingly indistinct and ill-defined figure. The writhing around helps, she's the only thing moving in there. Not six seconds after the countdown began you lose sight of her completely, her reserves reduced to nothing. However, the countdown continues. Perhaps her reserves need to be not just eliminated, but the vys that grants her life must be drained as well? Maybe you were being presumptuous with your earlier assumption that the AI had made a mistake?

>>32379327
A regular success would've had you losing sight of Chryssa before her reserves were fully drained, leaving you with only a rough estimate of when the buttons would need to be pressed.

Anyway, writin for
>Give the word.
>>
“Now!” You bark out the order and Profectus and Fulvia press the buttons at more-or-less the same time. You're worried, because at first nothing seems to happen. Could the lag between Profectus and Fulvia pushing their respective buttons been too great, and the order not carried through to the device? Then the drainage cuts off and the device ceases to function, the orb above the chamber dimming significantly. The glow recedes quickly, almost sucked back into the orb.

Then it begins to collapse on itself. You see a black spot the size of your head come into view as the orb almost seems to turn to dust, getting sucked into the blat spot little by little. It takes only a few minutes for it to disappear into that void, and once it's gone the void begins to eat away at itself. The spot grows smaller and smaller, eventually vanishing completely.

You hear metal grinding against metal as ancient machinery churns to life somewhere else in the facility. The whole room seems to be trying to shake itself apart as the remnants of Rhynian industry work inexorably to complete whatever task they were designed for. Finally the cacophony stops, and you see a new filter, this one glowing brighter than the previous filter, fall into place above the Purification Chamber. A thin, glowing tendril connects the chamber to the filter, but it does not resume draining Chrys. It is probably safe to retrieve her.

You cut off the flow of vys into your armor and stand up straight, looking to the AI which still remains projected onto the black screen. It's been repeating the same thing ever since Profectus and Fulvia ejected the filters. “Warning. Warning. Process incomplete. Please re-engage activation switch. Warning. Warning. Process-” It's monotonous voice fills you with a deep sense of unease, but you're disinclined to trust it.

You turn to leave the control room, remarking to Fulvia as you pass. “Open the door into the chamber.” She nods in response and approaches the command console. You stride quickly through the hall, relieved to see the door is open when you arrive. You step through and glance towards the window into the control room, you'd expected it to be solid black, as the AI blacked it out when it first appeared. You're surprised to see that it's instead covered by what appears to be some sort of dark brown film. Perhaps this is what's projecting the image of the AI, rather than the window itself? Oh well, not particularly important.

You proceed down the hallway, ducking under the chamber's hatch as it swings open and crouching down next to Chryssa. She's sprawled out on the floor of the chamber, unconscious but breathing. You channel just a touch of water magic to assess her condition, finding that besides some damage to her vocal cords she's perfectly fine. You heal that without too much difficulty, she likely just damaged them screaming. Once you're convinced she's more-or-less okay you take a moment to look around the chamber.

The walls are covered with odd, hexagonal panels. An identical rune is carved onto each panel, though you don't know the meaning. You'd guess that they mean 'leech', or at least something similar, but something tells you that you'd need to meditate on the symbol to learn more. You commit the symbol to memory, just in case it really is indicative that the panels are enchanted. Other than the panels and the runes, the only other furnishing inside the pod is a cushy mat on the floor, likely to prevent the occupants from hurting themselves while they convulse in pain.

You scoop Chrys up and carefully duck your way out of the pod. She's cold, her hands are tinted faintly blue, and her face is terribly pale but she's breathing and she's got a pulse so hopefully nothing is seriously wrong.

You carry Chrys out of the chamber, the door failing to close behind you as you make your way back towards the control room. The screen on the other end must still be blacked out by the AI. You make your way through the hallway to the control room once more, stopping just outside the door. “Alright, group up everybody. Lets find a nice, convenient spot near-by to set camp. I think we could all use a rest.” Profectus ask, obvious worry in his tone. “She's okay, right?” To which you nod. “I think so, but we'll know in a few hours.”

He nods, and Chryssa leans over to Darzi to translate what you'd said into Samjan. Huh, you hadn't realized she spoke Samjan. Seems odd that the Rhynians would program their AI to speak the language of their enemies, though when you think about it you suppose someone had to be able to interrogate them. One by one your party filters out of the room, the AI's voice seeming to grow louder and louder by the minute. You're glad you're not staying in this room for very long, because at this rate it will be blaring its warning loud enough to deafen you in a few minutes.

The four of you, not counting Chrys since she's unconscious and all, begin to go through the facility room by room. You're relieved to see it's a fairly small and self contained facility. I'll help you out since you have reading comprehension problems:

The AI miscalculated the rate the vys was being drained from Chryssa, thinking the drain was slower than it actually was. When the machine was disengaged, the AI still thought that there was more corrupted vys since it was working off of a faulty calculation and that is why it was blaring the warning. It was saying that the process wasn't complete.

Of course it is probably wrong, so it can be ignored at least until we know whether or not Chryssa is fully healed.
>>
>>32381184
>working off of a faulty calculation

or it's corrupted and wants to kill whoever enters the chamber

>>32381227
It has no control.

Your just paranoid now.
>>
You return to the storage room, depressing a button on the wall to get the doors to slide open. You're relieved to see that no horrible monstrosities have taken up residence in the time it took you to inspect the rest of the facility. “Alright everyone, lets set up camp.” You enter, finding a good spot near the center of the room and setting Chryssa down. You suppose you'll need to set up her tent.

Before you get an opportunity to begin, Profectus taps you on the shoulder. “We're all tapped out on rations and we don't have any firewood. Got anything in that cloak we could burn?” You think about it for a moment, and then shrug. “Well I've got food to spare and I might have some extra furniture, but are you sure a fire is a good idea? The ceiling is a lot lower in here than it is in most of the mine.” He looks up, frowning. “Crap... you're right, hadn't noticed. Was really looking forward to a hot meal too, but-” He shrugs. “Ah well. Still need that food though.”

You whip off your cloak, laying it out flat on the floor. It slowly rises as Ricky pushes one of your crates of rations out of that strange space he seems to inhabit. A crowbar clatters to the floor next to it once the crate sits fully on the floor, and you once more pull your cloak around your shoulders. Damn, this thing is convenient. Profectus nods his head in gratitude and picks up the crowbar, setting to work popping the top off of the crate.

You rifle through Chryssa's pack until you find her tent, pulling out the long sheet of fabric and the four strange, collapsible poles that hold it up. You've never seen tent poles like these, but it's probably just a Rhynian design or something. Something else caught your eye in her bag though, a small notebook with her name written on the cover.

>>
You spend a few minutes struggling with the tent, seriously this seems way more complicated than it needs to be with all the stretchy ropes and canvas ties, but eventually you get it figured out. Once the tent is set up you drag her bedroll out of her pack and lay it out inside her tent. Finally you pick her up and plop her unceremoniously onto her bedroll, taking only a few moments to straighten her out and push her onto her side. Good enough.

That done you retreat a short ways away from the rest of the party and sit down, assuming a meditation pose. An idea strikes you before you enter your meditative trance, and you address Profectus briefly. “You know, if you really wanted a hot meal you might collect some stones and meditate on trying to heat them up enough for you to cook with them. It would be a good way to train your control.” There is a brief pause before he responds. “You know, that's a good idea. Useful and might help me control my arm.”

You nod and return your focus inwards, only to once more interrupt yourself when you recall your Shockwave Sword. You withdraw it from your cloak and set it in your lap, beginning to channel vys into the blade. As you feel the life drain out of you and your limbs grow leaden the gem in the hilt of the blade begins to glow with a soft, internal light. Once you can barely remain conscious you cut off the flow of vys and stuff the blade into your cloak once more.

Finally you shift your focus inwards. Slowly the world fades away and the ebbs and flows of the ambient vys in the room dominate your mind's eye. You focus initially on simply replenishing your reserves, but once you feel feel refreshed and energized you turn your attention towards magic.

the lake has alot of vys yes. But meditating there should be reserved to water since it has a high DC.

>>
>>32383668
Alright, but lets do healing meditations only, to get that bonus early.
>>
You turn your attention, in a limited sense, to the world around you in search of a stone. You end up stealing one of the stones Profectus had collected to heat up, which is probably sort of a dickish move. For an apprentice, that might be jarring enough to pull them out of a meditative trance. Then again he's your apprentice, so you're entitled to be a dick to him. You had to put up with it.

You roll the stone across the ground over to you, letting it rest a few inches in front of you, then you begin to weaken it using earth magic. You sense it grow brittle, and weak. Cracks forming in its surface and the forces that bind it together weakening. Once you feel you've weakened it as much as you can without essentially turning it into sand, you begin to try to just reverse that process. At first you find it difficult to conceptualize, and even harder to enact, but eventually you think you figure it out.

As you slowly begin to strengthen the forces that keep the stone together and seal the cracks in its surface, you note a marked difference in the feeling of the magic. Earth magic has always filled you with a very warm sensation and has a certain softness to it, like the sands of the desert late in the morning before the sun has warmed them up to a scorching temperature. Metal magic by comparison is hard and cold. It reminds you of running the blade of your dagger along your forearms to meditate on water magic.

I actually wanted to focua on manipulation like we did last time. More fishmen fighting. would be awesome. + hunt that huge fish.

But most people did seem to want to focus on healing. Makes sense since we keep running into huge incidents. and grandmaster healing should give us more wiggle room to run wild.

It takes you only a short while to get the hang of strengthening and weakening the stone, and before long you will yourself out of your meditative trance. You snap your eyes open only to be greeted by the scene of your companions asleep around a pot of soup sitting on a bed of hot stones, only Fulvia still awake, though you think you hear Chryssa tossing and turning inside her tent.

The mind-fortifying effects don't really become available until Apprentice rank, at which point you could theoretically withstand anything so long as you had enough vys. The trick is being prepared though. Though all magic has some passive effects, Metal magic's mental fortification is not one of them. You'll need to think about what sort of situations you're about to face and whether or not they might affect your sanity.

The higher level you are in Metal magic, the more bang for your buck you get. So where as an apprentice may need to spend 10 vys just to walk away from seeing some sort of extra-dimensional being without being affected, a Master would only need to spend 1.
>>
>>32383868
Same
>>
>>32383891
Good to know.

So I would say we should be at least Master to walk away from the Spice unaffected without having to die from spending too much Vys
>>
>>32383891
So this universe has seeing "gods" true form as making you crazy type of magical being huh.
>>
>>32383938
Probably not actually.
>>
>>32383938
The gods themselves, at least your gods, don't really interact with humans. At least not that you've heard. Certain priest attribute their magical power to the gods but more-than-likely that's simply the result of the regimens their orders put them through.

Messing around with dead and forgotten gods, on the other hand. That has the potential to put you in a tough spot, sanity-wise. Spirits are also notorious for driving people insane, usually as a form of petty revenge.
>>
>>32383891
Wolll we get hints or warnings on when we should use this?
And how long do they last?
>>
>>32383994
It'll be pretty obvious.
>>
>>32383994
The duration of mental fortification will depend upon the amount of vys expended, but a minimum would be a half hour.

Warning will be given through narrative, usually, but you'll need to actually suggest fortifying your mind against alteration. It won't be a selectable option in most cases.
>>
>>32383989
Will most Spirits be able to be reasoned with like that one was?
>>
>>32384020
You don't have enough experience with spirits to say for certain, but in all the stories you've heard the Spirits are reasonable, if somewhat alien in thought process.

My guess is It makes you a conduit for Vys while tearing a veil in the fabric of two dimensions. The one where we live in and the one where the gods and Vys reside. Vys flows into the user as well as some of the aspects of the gods and or god.
>>
>>32384057
So if a master only needs 1 vys to protect against average insanity(can be more depending on the situation), then how much does a grand master need?
>>
>>32384176
At Grandmaster level some measure of mental fortification DOES become a passive effect. You wouldn't need to spend vys to protect against anything but the most mind shattering of events.

>>32384076
I'd rather not say.
>>
>>32384057
SO we have to completely anticipate something?

As in.. every time we go to bed. it might be in our interest to spend some vys so we don't talk to another forgotten god?
>>
>>32384225
That might be a tad overkill, but yes. You need to be think about what sort of situations you're going into and whether or not they may affect your sanity.
>>
>>32381963

Eager to test out your newly discovered power, you channel some metal magic into your armor. Slowly metallic plates begin to grow over your arms, legs, and torso completely covering what had once been protected only by chain mail. It comes to resemble the Ancient Elaudian armor you're letting Darzi borrow in many ways, much of the newly created metal plating appearing vaguely liquid. Overall you feel it's much more protective, both from direct attacks and probably from environmental factors.

You cut off the flow of vys and the metal that had grown on your armor recedes, not flaking off but melting into your armor. It's odd, to say the least. Once it's all vanished you push yourself up and stretch the stiffness from your joints. You wince as your hip pops, though you suppose that's what you get for sitting on the metal floor for an indeterminate amount of time, several hours at least. Once you're good and limber you head over to Chryssa's tent and carefully duck inside. You try to make as little noise approaching her, but your efforts are for naught. As soon as you step inside she bolts upright, staring at you wide-eyed and fearful.

You're struck with worry at her condition, but activating your magic sight you detect no corruption. Her reserves are full, but not consuming her as they had been before. They also glow a bright, pure blue rather than that vile shade of yellow that corruption seems to have. You would continue your examination but you find yourself being pulled into a forceful hug, tight enough that the air rushes from your lungs.

(1/2 or 3)
>>
You cut off the flow of vys to your armor and awkwardly reciprocate, though it's difficult when you're struggling to breathe. She lets you go after a short while, clearing her throat and pushing her hair back behind her ear. “It is good to see that I am not dead. My dreams were less than pleasant, I feared I had been doomed to eternal torment.” You smile. “I'm glad you're not dead too, Chrys. Want some soup?” She nods her head brusquely, flopping back onto her bedroll and sighing in relief.

You figure you ought to give her a few moments and duck out of the tent. You have to pick your way around your sleeping companions to get to the pot of soup, but you're relieved to see that they left two bowls out, for you and Chrys presumably. You begin to ladle soup into the two bowls while addressing Fulvia. “I think she'll be fine, I didn't detect any corruption. That AI must just be functioning poorly.” She nods in agreement. “Understandable, considering his circumstances. You have been meditating for nine hours incidentally.” Wow, you were really out for a long while. “How go plans for world domination, Fulvia?” She shrugs her shoulders. “I believe I will begin by waking the other remnants scattered throughout the ruins of the Empire, and then I will march on the homeland. The might of my construct army should be enough to enslave the native humans and once they are under my yolk I may begin their reeducation.” You smile cheerily. “Fascinating, well I hope that goes well for you.”

You're not sure if she's joking or not.

“Well, I'm going to bring Chrys her soup. We'll continue down into the depths momentarily.” Fulvia glances about at your sleeping party members. “Should I wake them, or let them sleep a while longer?” You shrug your shoulders. “Let them sleep, they've earned it.” She nods, and you duck back into Chryssa's tent. You find her laying back just where you left her, though as you sit down next to her she pushes herself up into a sitting position. You pass over her bowl and she nods her head in thanks.

“How are you feeling?” You ask before pouring some of the contents into your mouth. You find that it's unpleasantly lukewarm, but still tasty enough. She slurps down about half her bowl in one go and then sighs gratefully as she lowers the bowl. “I am feeling much better than I was before. The pain during the procedure was excruciating beyond belief but I feel that, ultimately, it was worth it. I no longer feel nauseous, my headache is gone, there are no more vile whisperings in the back of my mind. I feel slightly weaker after the procedure, but I believe that may simply be hunger.”

You nod along, though that bit about 'vile whisperings' bothers you. “Well it's good to hear you're feeling better. Makes sense that you're hungry after nine hours asleep. There's plenty more in the pot outside if you'd like it.”

You let a few moments pass in silence while you both eat, debating just how you want to phrase your question. Then you recall that being exceedingly blunt has never steered you wrong with Chryssa. “So, what did the voices tell you?” She finishes her bowl and then sets it aside gently. “Well, they said many things. They weren't really talking to me so much as they were talking about me. They also referred to another person, a man. I recall vividly they said. 'Others seem to be going insane around him'. They remarked that it was convenient, and that it was nice others could hear them now. They appeared in my dreams as three skeletal figures with smashed skulls dripping some sort of golden liquid.”

You nearly spit your mouthful of soup at the noise, but manage to choke it down without incident. You should've known it was those fuckers meddling, they seem to be spectating you delve this mine, maybe it's their only form of entertainment or maybe it's simply because you're wearing the cloak, maybe they can track you through it. Maybe they- “Mik, are you okay? You look panicked.” Your thoughts are interrupted by Chrys, and you glance up at her momentarily confused. “What? No, no... It's just that-”

“-I can't believe you've met them too.” She stares at you for a moment, stone faced. Then again that's normal for her. “Are you saying you know the voices in my head?” You grin. “I do believe so. I was given this cloak by three figures with smashed skulls which dripped golden liquid. They remarked that I was insane, and that was the reason I could see them. They were also in the corrupted AI's core, seemingly commentating on my progress. I'm probably the man they were referring to.”

She stares at you a moment longer while you slurp down the rest of your soup, setting your own bowl aside once you've finished. You clap your hands together cheerily. “Welp, lets go wake the others then. Time to get going.” She holds out a hand, motioning for you to stop. “Wait wait, does this mean that I'm insane?” You think about it for a moment, and then shrug. “I don't know, probably? Maybe it was only temporary insanity but you're probably a full blown lunatic. Just like me!”

You depart on that note, pushing yourself up and slipping out of her tent. You can't help but grin. No wonder those spirits like screwing with people, it's fun. You address Fulvia while resting your foot on Prof's shoulder and starting to shake him awake. “Alright, help me get these useless bums up. We need to break camp and get moving.” She nods her head and stands, moving over to Darzi and violently shaking her by the shoulders until she jolts awake. It isn't long before you're standing to the side while the rest of your party goes about packing their belongings and getting ready to move out.

Once camp has been broken you clap your hands together to get everyone's attention. “Alright, we're going to push through these last fifty levels or so to the lift, we're going to find this bandit, and we're going to kill his ass dead.” Profectus raises his fist in the air and excitedly proclaims. “Yeah! Murder!” Chryssa quietly points out. “It's not murder, it's revenge. It is perfectly acceptable.” Fulvia merely translates the goings-on to Darzi, those two seem to have formed a friendship of sorts. You conclude your little speech with. “But first we have a maintenance room to loot!”

Chryssa groans exasperatedly, but Profectus simply mimics his earlier actions by pumping his fist in the air and proclaiming. “Yeah! Loot!” With your little pep talk concluded you turn on your heels and stride out of the storage room, relieved to see that in the nine hours you've been resting the hallways have not been flooded with some horrible monsters. You make your way towards the maintenance tunnel, chatting with Profectus absentmindedly about how his meditation went. Apparently he really feels like he made some progress, though he doubts he's reached the next level of understanding yet.

When you reach the doorway you find them as you'd left them, sealed with no obvious way of accessing them. No buttons to push or panels to vandalize. Nor do you see any near-by hallways or rooms which might contain the door controls. You do note a small black object situated above the door, but waving your hand in front of it produces no results.

You glance up and down the hallway, and then shrug your shoulders. “Well, we need to get this door open but I don't want to just rip it off its little... receptacle, I suppose would be the term for it. Doorway. Whatever, point is some of us need to stay here to contact the others if it opens.” Chryssa clears her throat. “I volunteer to stay here, as I am the most proficient in close quarters. However, I would like to try something first.”

You step aside and motion Chryssa forward. “Be my guest.” He nods, and steps up to the doorway. Rather than try to wedge it open, as you'd expected, she instead reaches up and places her hand on the black bar above the doorway. It comes to life, a light scanning over her hand. After a minute or so of scanning her hand it flashes green and the door slides open. “What made you think to grab the thing?” She shrugs her shoulders. “It just occurred to me. The fact I am wearing technician's armor may have something to do with it.”

You shrug your shoulders and proceed through the doorway, party following along behind you. The area is bathed in red light and smoke billows across the floor. Various readouts dot the walls, though they carry no significance in your mind. The door slides shut behind your party, and you get the distinct feeling of being caged. Hopefully that's just paranoia.

As you proceed down the hallway you begin to hear a faint echo, you can't quite decipher what it is. It sounds like... gurgling? Perhaps there is a water source ahead? Eventually you come to a crossroads, signs hanging from the walls indicating what lies in which direction. The gurgling seems to be coming from a room simply labeled 'Chamber AI'. The other corridor is labeled 'Maintenance Lift'.

>Head towards the maintenance lift, it might be a shortcut.

So....anyone curious about what we're gonna do with Fulvia? We do have the runes from the funneling machine, but we're probably gonna have to get to master or Grand-master if we want to use it effectively.

True, but that gurgling was a mystery box. Who knows what could be gurgling in A.I. Control.
>>
>>32386837
What does the rune have to do with Fulvia?
Also we can deal with her near the tear in reality, we just need to make sure we don't break anything or damage anything other than killing the shade inside her.

Well, the panels seemed to shunt the corrupted vys into the filter. Though I guess with Fulvia, it'll be less of rune tinkering and more of wandering around in her core and pruning corrupted stuff.

You take the left path, towards the AI chamber. The gurgling grows louder the further you go, growing in volume. You start to pick out tone and rhythm to the gurgling voice, and it is a voice. It pauses every few moment, perhaps so the creature causing the noice can catch its breath, and then it resumes more forcefully than before. It reminds you almost of someone screaming underwater, or perhaps of someone gargling.

When you reach the chamber you're greeted by the sight of pipes, tubes, and wires protruding from every surface. The gurgling is loud here, it is indeed a distinct scream, the scream of a man or at the very least a sentient being. Why it sounds as though the person in question is underwater, you wouldn't be able to guess. You follow the wires in the hopes of finding the source of the noise, half expecting to come across a chamber full of people strapped to chairs being tortured to power the AI, or some similar horror.

Instead when you round the last corner towards the wires' and pipes' destination you find yourself eye to eye with a man's severed head. He is pale, his eyes bloodshot, beady, and dead. Almost like glass eyes. He is grafted at the neck to some sort of metal collar, to which all the wires seem to flow, and he is suspended within some sort of glass jar. Wires appear taped to his head, and a tube is grafted onto his face over his mouth and nose. It's likely the reason his screams are muffled. He does not appear to see you, though the screaming persist. It takes you several moments to realize it due to the pallor of his skin, but you believe he may be Samjan rather than human.

Fulvia remarks passively. “Ah, so they proceeded with this experiment after all.” Profectus simply calls out. “OH SHIT! What in the names of the Gods is that thing?!” While Darzi screams rather girlishly and retreats back around the corner. Chryssa seems unphased.

“Ew.” You remark calmly, taking a few steps towards the disembodied head. “Fulvia, what did this experiment entail?” She clears her throat quietly, once more it strikes you as a useless gesture for someone without an actual throat. Perhaps she merely does it to seem more human. “The typical method of creating an AI is costly and inefficient, requiring massive amounts of vys and the efforts of powerful vatis. This was an early attempt at creating an AI using a biological source.” She recites this as if reading off of a script, without any sort of emotion.

“Why Samjan?” You ask, to which she shrugs. “We were at war with them at the time, and additionally your people are biologically immortal. Thus you were the best candidates.” You glance over your shoulder at her briefly before leaning in closer, nearly pressing your face against the jar. Still the head does not seem to see you. “Why not an elf? Are they not also long lived?” Fulvia nods. “They are, but sacrificing a loyal subject of the Empire, even if they were a criminal, was viewed as distasteful. War criminals were a far better source of test subjects.”

You note a series of read-outs next to its jar. Among them are oxygen levels, nutrient supply, and water supply. They're all topped off, though you're unsure how they would replenish their supply of nutrients after a thousand years without maintenance. They probably siphon the water from the lake above. You also note a monitor labeled. 'Brain Activity' which seems to be twitching about on the far end of the dial.

“Do you condone this sort of experimentation?” You ask, trying to keep your tone casual though you can feel your hands shaking with rage. There is a brief pause before Fulvia responds. “I am programmed to believe that science stands above morality, and while perhaps objectionable it was a necessary step towards progress. The decision to use Samjan instead of some other race was purely practical, and the experiment itself could have drastically increased the efficiency of the empire by increasing the available number of AI. Unfortunately the Empire fell before the process could be refined.”

You straighten up, beginning to gather vys in your chest for a blast of fire to destroy the entire construction. You're about to express your view that the entire thing is disgusting by Profectus practically jumps down Fulvia's throat. “So was I just some fucking vessel for you to experiment on? YOU were in control of the facility they found me in, YOU were privy to everything occurring in that damned bunker! I bet it was you who approved the amputation of my arm. I bet it was you who replaced it with this barely functional piece of crap!” He falls suddenly silent, mumbling to himself briefly before resuming his tirade in a calmer tone. “I should kill you. Do you know the sort of pain this arm causes me? Every time I try to use it it feels as though my skin is being peeled away strip by strip. I lack the words to describe the torment I've been forced to put up with because of YOU!”
(1/2)
>>
His face is contorted in rage, and as he seems to conclude his rant the blackened stone surface of his artificial arm splits apart to reveal its glowing innards. Flames lick up from the cracks as he levels it at Fulvia, who projects a hurt expression at him. “Profectus, please... I wouldn't wish to harm you. The Dux was the one who had final say over what experiments were conducted, I merely designed and implemented them. I wouldn't knowingly-” Profectus interrupts. “SHUT UP! Shut up! I don't want to hear your excuses!”

You release the vys you'd gathered for the spell and it fades back into your reserves. “Listen, we're all getting rather emotional. Except for Chryssa.” She nods her head curtly. “Why don't we all-” You approach the two of them cautiously, forcing yourself between the two of them and trying to push them apart. “-Just take a step back a-” You're interrupted by Profectus.

“You would condone this kind of shit, Mik? It's one of your own kind for fuck's sake!” Though obviously still angry, he at least doesn't have his arm leveled at you. “No, Prof. No I wouldn't condone this sort of experiment. I find it abhorrent that they would perform these experiments on any sentient being.” He presses his good hand to his chest emphatically. “That could have been me! The only difference is the color of my fucking skin, Mik! They would've pulled that shit if they could've gotten away with it! That heart you poisoned in the facility, in the pod down from mine? That was a fucking person! She designed the experiment that turned them into that monstrosity!”

You glance over your shoulder at Fulvia, who is looking down at her feet doing her best to look contrite. She quietly remarks. “I did not design that experiment, instructions and equipment came with the orders.” You're not even sure how that works, how does one turn a person into a massive heart? What is necessary to mutate someone so drastically? “Go wait with Darzi, Fulvia. Neither of you should be around each other at the moment.” Fulvia nods her head and retreats. You note that Chryssa follows her while you turn your attention back to Profectus.

“I can't believe you're just letting her go, Mik. You and I both know that if this isn't solved now it will never be solved at all. We'll move on and forget about it until we dive some other ruin long ago forsaken by the gods to discover some fresh horror wrought upon the world by her kind.” Some of the fire has left his voice, replaced instead by a deep sense of disappointment.

I think the fact that the Rhynians were wiped from the face of the earth by the gods themselves is enough of an response. Fulvia, according to what I've seen after dealing with these A.I., was just as much a slave as you were. The A.I. we put down was specifically instructed to consume materials that turned her insane and ultimately killed her. She'll be useful in preventing and putting and end to similar experiments, if we ever find more.

>She is incapable of completely disobeying an order given by those she views as her superiors. She's actually incapable of disobeying an order you give.

She still views us as her superior even after we confessed that we aren't?

>Why wasn't it an option to point out to Prof that Fulvia is incapable of refusing orders?
You mean
>Profectus needs to let go. It was a thousand years ago and Fulvia was merely following orders. A soldier should understand that.
>Fulvia was merely following orders.

Additionally,

>Fulvia, according to what I've seen after dealing with these A.I., was just as much a slave as you were.

It's not like he can offer us every possible option, man.

We do have a test subject right here. Lets see if we can make him lucid.

As far as you know she does, there's been no indication she views you as anything but her commanding officer.

If they were in a rhynian facility and had even the slightest interaction with an AI (and since Profectus was found in such facility, he would have obviously been in one), then it would be pretty obvious.

And even if that's not the case, he would have had enough interaction with Fulvia since waking up that he'd know that's how it works.
