Welcome to Witcher Quest - Act I: A Town of Sin

What is a Witcher?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AzfFPONyjSw

Need to get in the mood?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sr-DKyAVU34

Disclaimer:
While this quest does follow the path of a Witcher, it is set in a completely separate universe to that of Andrzej Sapkowski's books, to avoid mistakes being made within his setting. For this reason some liberties about Witchers themselves may be taken to accommodate the new setting, you have been warned.

Also the quest is being written in a different perspective to most quests, in the form of a bardic tale... so third person. If this irritates you as players let me know and I'll switch it to second person as per normal quest protocol.

With all that bullshit out of the way, let the quest begin!
>>
Come come, ladies and gentlemen, lords and ladies; let us sit a while as I tell you a tale like none you have ever heard. Let me tell you of foul monsters, dastardly villains and beautiful women, and he who conquered them all. Let me tell you the tale of a man whose deeds were so legendary, few men know truth from legend. Let me tell you the tale, of a Witcher!

Yes, a Witcher! One of those grand old warriors that once roamed the land, slaying monsters and lifting curses as if such deeds were mere child’s play, one who as a child endured training the likes of which would cause grown men of our generation to fill their britches, one who through sorcery and alchemy threw away their humanity to gain the strength to fight on even terms with monsters and demons, one who passed through the legendary rite of the grasses, from which less than four of ten return.

Yet to compare this tale to that of any mere Witcher would be an insult to my art, and to my friend whose tale I have to tell. I still remember seeing him for the first time, as he strode through the centre of the small fishing town I called home, the carcass of some creature dragged behind him as evidence of his work. I remember marvelling at his strange cat-like eyes and white hair – I thought it strange that a man so young had hair whiter than my grandfather’s. But what truly interested me were those swords, the famous twin blades of a Witcher…

“A steel one for killing men, and a silver one for killing monsters.” I murmured to my playmate, who had also stopped to stare at the Witcher.

“They’re both for monsters,” the man said without stopping, though he did give me a sidelong glance, the glimmer of what may have been a smirk in his eyes, though his face betrayed no emotion.

Those simple words held with me for years to come, but I did not fully grasp their meaning for some time. But none can deny the truth of that statement? For sometimes men are the most terrible monsters of all. Indeed, this very tale concerns such a monster, a man whose heart was as black as night, and his soul even darker.

But I'm getting ahead of myself! Let me start from the beginning, of our tale, the tale of Garland the Witcher, the last true Witcher to graduate from the school of the…

Sorry for the slow update, had to sort out the skill tree, coming next post

Ah yes, the great Witcher school of the Panther, known for training Witchers who stalked the night like ghosts, slaying evil men and monsters before they even knew that he was there. My grandfather used to tell me tales of Master Elldrick, the head Witcher of the keep, who was said to have slain an entire coven of Vampires without even being spotted. But I’d wager Garland was just as crafty.

In any case our tale begins not four months after Garland’s trial of the Grasses, in his first spring as a true Witcher. Having only left Panther’s a month prior, Garland had with him only a few meagre possessions. Of course his graduation gifts were amongst them, a medallion bearing the face of a snarling panther, and his two swords of which I still remember with wonder.

There had been a number of contracts available for him to take, but Garland’s intuition and keen senses lead him to the job that would start him on a path like none other. He had come to the sleepy fishing town of Loredge on the western shore of Honoria, one of the four Northern Kingdoms of Middenvast. There had been reports of missing persons, over twenty four had simply vanished over the past month, it was decided some creature was to blame, hence they had called for a Witcher. Upon arriving at the town Garland headed straight for…

Garland knew that the best source of primary information would be the guard house, and so without any hesitation he made his way directly to the Garrison. Loredge being the small town it was, there was nothing grand about the place, t’was simply a large brick building attached to the side of the small wall that surrounded the town.

As he arrived Garland noted that the guardsmen seemed none too happy to see him, many of them gave him disdainful glances, others spat in the dirt as he passed. He may have even heard one of them mutter “Mutant” under his breath, but when he turned his cat-like gaze to the man, he was conveniently facing the other direction, staring at a particularly interesting practice dummy.

He ignored it, he was here for information, not pleasantry.

“Where is your captain?” he asked the nearest guard, who seemed more interested in picking his teeth than practicing his combat. It was no wonder people were going missing with men like these on the loose as ‘lawnmen’.

The man simply gestured to a door on the side of the garrison that read “Captain Klemens Barth” on a small wooden plaque. Nodding a simple thanks, Garland strode to the door and knocked thrice with a firm hand.

There came a muffled grunt from behind the door, and something that sounded like a half muffled giggle and shriek – presumably from a woman, but I make no judgements on the preferences of others. It matters not, for Garland never saw the giggler, for when the door finally opened some moments later, the only face to greet him was the round, red, sweaty face of Guard Captain Barth.

At first the face looked angry, then shocked and then settled back into anger again. Surely he had expected one of his men, rather than the tall, silver-haired Witcher that stood before him. But Garland could tell by the look in the man’s face, that he knew why the Witcher was here.

“Ah, fucken ‘ell” the man grumbled “I told Lord Teslund I could ‘andle things. We don’t need no bloody Witcher in Loredge.” The man seemed to be talking to himself more than Garland, but still the Witcher replied.

“Well apparently you do.”

It looked as though Captain Barth was about to say something – perhaps something not quite friendly – but it seemed he thought better of it. “Right then, what the ‘ell you want? I’m a busy man Witcher.”

“I need to know the circumstances of the disappearances; time, place, marks, tracks, anything of that sort.” Garland said, cutting straight to the chase.

Some of the flush had left the Captain’s face by this time, and with a quick glance behind him it seemed that he deemed his office “safe” for entry. He waved the Witcher in, closing the door behind him and moving to a place behind his desk. Garland could smell the musky perfume of sex, and beneath that the scent of alcohol filling the room like a cloud.

The round – but inarguably muscular – fellow dropped himself unceremoniously into his chair behind the desk, fuddled with some papers for a moment and then tossed them across the table to Garland.

“Twen’y-four missing, only three have turned up – all dead.” He began, pointing out the relevant reports. “Fourteen men, ten women, all aged not three summers short of nineteen. Most, if not all of them disappeared at night, most of them were reported near the brothels or docks before they went missing, but that’s ‘alf the damn town that goes ‘round those parts.” He said with a little smirk stretching his plump face.

“What about witnesses?” Garland queried.

“None, not any that’ll talk anyway.” Grumbled the Captain. “Meribelle, one-a-the ‘ores said she saw Ahlf – one of the missing boys – rowing off in ‘is rowboat one night, but she also claims she saw a bloody dragon in the ‘ills to the north, and there ain’t no dragons near Loredge.”

Garland took all this information in, as well as reading the papers before him – which were nothing but bloated reports with little more useful information. Using all this information he prepared his last few questions.

>>
>>32317837
“I’m interested in the corpses, where did you find them? What state were they in?”

Barth gave the Witcher a quizzical glance before answering “The three we found dead were washed up by the tide, not half a mile south o’here. Two were found together, another washed up the next day. All bloated from the water they were, they had a few bites, but that’ll just be fish grabbing a nibble before they washed up. We burned’em, don’t want no drowned dead raising the panic any more than it already is.”

“What about this Merribelle girl?”

“Her? She’s alive.”

“I meant where can I find her.”

“Oh, right.” Suddenly the Guard Captain’s face was flushed lightly, turning his rosy cheeks a darker shade of pink. “She uh… you’ll be able to find her in a few hours, by nightfall she’ll be at the Red Lady’s establishment, right next to the Tavern near the waterfront. She works there most nights.” He said these words quickly, as if he were embarrassed at how well he knew the schedule of the whore. “Now unless you want to ask me what position you can fuck’er in, I’d like it if you got to work. It’s bad enough the Lord ‘ired you, I don’t want to have you meddlin’ in guard business any more than you ‘ave to.”

Gathering up the papers and handing them back to Barth, Garland said not a single word before standing, nodding his thanks and farewell to the guard captain, then turning and exiting from the door through which he came. Though he could prove nothing, it was clear to him that the Captain had some affiliation with Merribelle. He suspected that she may well be the giggler he heard earlier.

And so he waited, expecting that she would emerge from the door – or perhaps a window – any minute. But when after fifteen minutes had passed with no showing of a busty show-girl, the Witcher decided it would be best to simply find her as the “Red Lady” that night.

Resolved to find the evidence that the Guardsmen must have missed, Garland of the Panther school headed towards the docks. He didn’t know what he was looking for yet, but he knew there must be something.

He arrived not five minutes later, scanning the small fishermen’s docks of Loredge with keen eyes. The town was set into a small bay, with the fishing boats sailing out to the ocean each day for their daily catch, which would then likely be sold off to local townspeople and smaller nearby villages. There were four bigger fishing boats, with a good number of smaller vessels as well. Most of them were out at this moment, as it was still noon of this spring day.

Scanning the horizon Garland could see a number of small rocky islands out towards the sea, one had a small stone tower upon which a fire would blaze at night he reckoned. Beyond this there was little of immediate interest, he needed to decide what to do from here.

Garland was particularly interested in the islands beyond the bay, having heard the information about the young man rowing out that way, he had a hunch that whatever was going on was happening out there somewhere, the drowned bodies were more proof of this.

Before he searched the shore for himself, he decided to ask the locals what they knew, with particular interest in the lighthouse tower. As he had suspected, most men knew less than the Guard Captain, and half of what he heard sounded more like unsubstantiated rumour more than anything else. But there was one he spoke to who he found rather interesting.

He was a young fisherman’s apprentice, roughly thirteen years of age, the signs of his manhood only just dusting his features as puberty began to take full effect upon him. When asked about the tower the boy gave the same answer as most men had, claiming it was lit on stormy or cloudy nights to stop passing ships from crashing into the rocks. But it was his reaction that was most interesting… the boy blushed while telling this tale.

There was clearly something more on the boy’s mind, and it was Garland’s aim to make him talk. Panthers were notorious for their skill with interrogation, but this boy was no hardened warrior, nor was he a demon born to lying. It took only a stern, questioning stare to crack the boy, though I must say, under Garland’s gaze any normal man might have done the same.

“I-I-I…” the boy stammered, paused, seemed to find the words and continued “I-I heard that some of the older boys, they take girls out in their boats to the light ‘ouse… and… well I don’t really know. My brother Ahlf used ‘ta say they fiddled with ‘em, y’know… like what y’do with them girls at the brothel.”

And there it was, the lighthouse was nothing more than an out of the way little make-out point. For all the young girls and boys that didn’t want their fathers catching them. Fair enough, but what did it have to do with the disappearances?

Barth had mentioned that the three corpses had been found south of town along the gravelly shoreline. With little more to go on for now, the Witcher set upon searching the shoreline for some useful clues. He hoped mostly for tracks, or perhaps even a new, fresh corpse to examine – having lost that luxury thanks to Barth’s overly cautious behaviour – but his hopes were not high. Therefore you can imagine his surprise when he found something that was perhaps, better than either possibility.

He trekked over a mile down the shore, examining all that there was to see. Amongst the driftwood and weeds he picked, hoping to find a scrap of evidence so that he would at least know what it was he was hunting, but alas there was nothing.

That is, until he had reached a small inlet where the tides conjoined, filling a shallow pool with water. Here where filth grew in the relatively still water, he found a creature. It hadn’t noticed him just yet, his light steps had made sure of that.

Garland gazed upon the creature, easily identifying it once it turn to snatch at a small bird that ventured to close to its hunched form. Its skin was a sickly pale colour, its eyes were white and lifeless, and from its body oozed mud and filth as though it produced it. Though it had a humanoid form, and wore shreds of clothes, it was no human – not anymore anyway.

This was a Drowner – the result of sin continuing to live on even after a man has drowned. These devilish beasts often come ashore to grab and drag others under the sea or into rivers. Those who sinned in life, continue to do so in death – a monster is always a monster.

Garland drew his silver blade, for this un-living creature was certainly supernatural. His training allowed him to draw it silently, and approach without a single sound, even on the gravelly surface of the shore upon which he trod. He did not mean to attack, not until he was sure that it was the only one around. He scanned the area (Rolled 78) but saw nothing but the sea birds and the Drowner before him.

The dice thing is up to you. Average of 3 is going to hover at 50, with a bell curve leading to more stable results.

Best of 3 kicks up the average dramatically, where the 50% point is something like 70.

I'd kinda prefer best of three

Garland dashed forward, his silver sword a blur in his hands. With each step he barely allowed his boots to touch the surface of the ground. He was a bolt of lightning, a force of nature cloaked silence.

(Rolled 3)

The beast never stood a chance, with a single terrifyingly quick swing of his silver longsword the Drowner fell in a heap to the grimy floor of the tide-pool, its head shortly joining it in the depths with a large “sploosh” noise. Wary that there may be more of these creatures hanging about, the Witcher kept his sword in hand as he kicked the creature over so that it lay on its back.

It was certainly a fresh one, for its clothes from its previous life were still partially in-tact. He saw it wore the clothes of a sailor, and no simple one at that. The clothes the Drowner still wore were of decent quality, and bore an insignia of a golden anchor upon the left breast.

>>32320025
Let's take that insignia from his shirt and look around for anything, if not then we might as well head to the tavern now

Insignia’s such as this usually belonged to a company of some sort, Garland knew this well and decided that it might help him identify the… man that this creature once was. He cleaned his blade as best he could before sheathing it, as there seemed to be no danger here any longer. That done he knelt in the scummy water, took a knife from his belt and cut the leather insignia from the tattered jacket.

He placed this in his small carrying bag, and set about searching the rest of the body for evidence of the creature’s identity. There was very little left for him to find, there was some shredded papers which had melted in the sea whenever the man had drowned, a small silver pocketwatch that no longer worked, and a few gold pieces that Garland happily pocketed.

It was not much, but what he had found would serve him better than he knew in the future.

This done there was little more left for him to do except head back to town… and yet…

Something called to him then, and he decided that it was necessary for him to keep searching. Call it what you will, fate, luck, intuition – it does not matter. What does matter is that Garland continued to search, and in doing so fell upon some more evidence – literally.

As he pulled himself from the pool of salty sludge, he found his boot caught in a tangle of seaweed that put up more of a fight than the Drowner had. He tugged himself free with little effort, but in doing so staggered towards a jumble of weeds and driftwood. It was but a small stumble, but just enough for him to notice a fat pink foot poking from beneath the mangled pile… a human foot.

Garland pushed the pile aside, noting that it was far too convenient to have been done by the tides alone as he did so. Clearly something was amiss here, he could feel it now, there was more than a single wandering Drowner involved.

But that would have to wait until later, he was primarily interested in the body at the moment. Said body had just become visible as he finished musing on this subject, with the wood and weed parted to reveal the dead woman who lay beneath. She had been a plump girl, even before the sea water had bloated her corpse as it had. She was face down and naked, save for a single hide shoe that still clung to her foot, her bloated flesh pouring over the confining edges of it in puffy lumps.

Gently he turned her over with the toe of his boot, only to find the front of her was just as unappealing as her rear. Her pale flesh had swollen worst here, with her belly full of sea water and her bare breasts lolling to either side. He gazed long enough only to determine what Barth had said to be true, before turning his gaze from her.

There were no visible marks that he could see, though her neck seemed to be broken perhaps from a fall of some sort. The only other marks upon her were bruises and small bites, presumably as Barth said; from hungry fish or carrion birds.

He had found all he would find here.

The brothel was his next stop, he had but a single witness – storytelling whore or not.

By the time he had arrived, so had night, falling over the town like a blanket of shadows. Guards patrolled the districts, lighting torches as they went. But Garland’s destination had the most interesting lights of all… red lights.

Now as a humble travelling bard, I cannot vouch for the quality of every brothel in the land, but I can vouch at least for a few. And I will tell you, Loredge had one of the best in the land… if you’re hoping for a sleazy night with a chubby girl with decent tits, fat arse and a voice like a sow that is.

There were a few girls at work already, though sun had only barely disappeared beneath the sea line. One Garland saw with a touch of surprise was managing to entertain two men at once with her deft hands, all while smoking a pipe of tobacco.

He stood there only a moment before he was approached by a woman in a red dress, clearly the “Red Lady” for which the establishment was named.

“Well well what ‘ave we ‘ere? A Witcher?”

“Is that a problem?” Garland asked, noticing the scrunched faces some women gave him as they passed. He was used to these looks by now, but was surprised even whores would shoot them his way.

“Not t’all boy, but I’ll have to charge extra, most me girls don’t want any mutant seed in’em.”

“Actually I’m here for business, not pleasure. I’d like to see Merribelle.”

“Aye, Barth said you’d be comin’” the women sighed, obviously saddened that she wouldn’t get to add her ‘Witcher surcharge’ this night… at least not yet. She lead her to a woman who sat with one leg crossed over the other as she sat upon a wooden bench. She held a drink of low quality brandy in one hand and a rolled tobacco cigarette in the other.

“You da feller who been askin’ bout the missin’ folks?”

But their business IS pleasure!

"Barth told me you've seen something related to the disappearances. Tell me what you saw."
>>
“Barth told me you’ve seen something related to the disappearances, tell me what you saw.” The Witcher said simply as he took a seat beside her. He noticed her gaze drop to his crotch for a moment, perhaps out of simple instinct, before trailing back up to his face before she continued.

“I’ll tell you exactly what I told Barth. I saw me one of them fisher’s boys – Ahlf, the one whose always sniffin’ around ‘ere for a cheap blow ‘cause ‘is pa runs the tavern, and we rent the brothel from ‘im – it was ‘im I seen rowin’ out his boat. ‘ad this weird look on ‘is face, like men gets when you just fucked ‘im real good. All happy and sleepy like.” She took this opportunity to take a long drag on her steadily burning smoke “’nyway that was ‘pparently the last anybody ever saw of the boy.”

>???
>>
>>32320922
Did you see which direction he was rowing?
>>
I would guess we’re running low on players now, so we might come to a close soon.

“Did you see which direction he was going?” Garland asked, trying to not show that he truly needed this information. And yet something must have shown on his face, or perhaps the woman was simply too spry to care either way, in any case her reply was less than what he was hoping for.

“How much is that worth to ya Witcher? I could be workin’ right now, I’ll be missing out on a fair few crowns for yer chatter.”

To be honest the Witcher did not have much coin on his person, a hundred gold, plus the few coins he had found on the Drowner. Definitely enough in there to pay off a whore with some to spare, but he would like to keep as much gold on hand as he could.

“Look here whore,” Garland began in a gruff voice, “I need this information to save lives, I don’t have the time to deal with your games.”

“Ha!” Merribelle cawed loudly, nearly spilling her brandy as she stifled her giggle – one that sounded eerily familiar. “Looky ‘ere Witcha, you NEED me. So either you cough up say… forty gold pieces – half my normal fee for a fuck – and I’ll tell you what you need to know.”

And though it pains me to tell the tale this way, it is my Bardly honour that compels me to tell the truth. On this day, early in the Witcher’s journey he had to concede to the whore, coughing up the forty pieces that she so desired. He dropped each coin into her cigarette carrying hand, as her eyes grew greedy at the steady clinking of the mass of coin.

“Thank you sir, may you come again.” She cooed with pleasure dripping from her lips like a snake’s venom. “He was rowin’ out towards the light’ouse, but I don’t think he was going TO the light’ouse, he weren’t going straight for it if he were. Nay, I’d say he’d be heading to the rocky island ‘side it, no idea why he’d be doin’ that though.” As she said this she tucked the coins away in a concealed purse beneath her silken skirt. “Will that be all Witcha?”

Garland was less than happy with this result, but this was the price he had to pay. He had learned plenty in his first day of investigations; he knew that there were twenty-four missing – presumed dead – individuals, ten women, fourteen male. Three had been found on the shore drowned, one he had found himself, one who had been buried purposely beneath driftwood and seaweed. There was a Drowner he had found also, this one had a gold anchor insignia which he now carried. There was something suspicious about the light house too, and perhaps the islands surrounding it.

There was still much left unanswered, but he would get to the bottom of this mystery – and much more before he ended up leaving Loredge. But now it was time for him to relax, it had been a long journey and there would be more investigations tomorrow. With a grunt as a goodbye to the greedy pig-whore, the Witcher stood from his place beside her, and strode directly out the door. I don’t know if he ever had a desire to plough any one of those women, but any desire had left him by this point, and I can understand being turned off by a greedy whore!

Instead he headed for the tavern, little did he know he was about to meet an important acquaintance amongst the many night drinkers… but that shall have to wait until I next take up my tale!

Thanks for participating guys, sorry to the anon who just got here. But I have to leave it here so I can go eat, and this seems like a decent place to leave it. I have my twitter for announcements, but I'm planning to run again in two days (Monday for me, Sunday for most I think) Feel free to give me some feedback

It was good. I was hesitant at how you said it was going to be narrated at the beginning of the thread but I'm liking it. I enjoy the dialogue in that it makes me loathe villagers in a way that only the Witcher games have made me.

Nah I liked reading the quest log a lot from the game, I'm reading all your posts in his voice. This is also the perfect forum for our character to make some money on dice! Though maybe adjust the rolls for less decisions so the game goes faster.

>Maybe just one roll from me as the opponent, one roll from an anon for their dice hand?
opposed rolls and the like are terrible in quests, even worse when you get anons playing them out amongst themselves

terrible idea
>>
This turned out better than i expected. Good job.

Personally i don't like to see rolls and such in the post though. This is especially true when it is suppose to be someone telling a story. I'd prefer if you used the rolls but not right them into the story.

>>32322823
Don't dabble too much on the dice. Just have anons roll d100 or whatever you like. You can do the rest in the background and it can be as simple or complicated as you like.
