And so being half-demon, you find yourself at a table with two demon hunters in their home completely welcome, while your pet hellhound’s head contentedly snuggled into your lap. Reeber is drooling slightly.

“Did you have something else you wanted to talk about?” asks Cassandra.

“She does kind of seem like she had something else on her mind, doesn’t she,” Isaac says.

Well. Where to start?

“For starters, who was the demon that tried to kill us?” you ask. You continue stroking Reeber’s soft fake coat of fur. (-2 Stress: 21/100)

“I’m betting it was one of Meckor’s lieutenants,” Isaac replies. “He wasn’t taking any chances when he decided he wanted Rowan dead. Luckily, he didn’t factor you into the plan.”

While that may be so, you doubt the demon will overlook your presence a second time. “Well he still has five lieutenants and all the people that answer to them, right?” you say. “Won’t he do something like this again?”

Cassandra is the one that answers you. “We’ll be careful. Yes, he will try again, but he won’t do it in broad daylight, and he won’t try anything when we’re ready for him. The house, though, is safe. You don’t have to watch yourself here.”

Isaac jumps back in. “The only ones that stand a real chance of hurting us are Meckor’s lieutenants or Meckor himself. But I think that he’s found out about you, Sierra. He’s patient and cautious, and he’s already lost two of his underlings. He won’t He won’t risk making a move until he can find out what he’s up against.”

That news is good, but also kind of bad. He won’t try a front on attack again, but what’s to stop him from hitting you when you don’t expect it? (+3 Stress: 24/100) “What about the other Justice League guys?” you ask. “You were on the phone with somebody, right? You’re not the only demon hunter out there. Is somebody coming to help?”

Stoically, Isaac shakes his head. “People like me are few and far between,” he says, “and we’re stretched thing. Really thin. Unless San Francisco gets to the verge of complete disaster, nobody’s coming. We’re not the only ones with problems.”

You have trouble imagining what could be worse than having demons with hellhounds chasing you down while you’re walking home from school. “So unless somebody dies, it’s all business as usual,” you surmise.

Cassandra moves on to the next magazine, and begins filling it as well. “In a way of speaking,” she says.

You look down at Reeber. He’s pretty much a blob of jelly at this point. “Hey, is… Reeber unusual, for a hellhound?”
>>
>>32305976

Isaac looks under the table at the dog for a second. “Well, someone’s gone through a lot of trouble to give him a glamor to let him look like a German Shepard. It’s a pretty good one too,” he says. “I’ve never seen a hellhound like him, but they’re just animals. Dangerous and savage, but you can train them.”

“Reeber’s been trained really well,” comments Cassandra. “he doesn’t doesn’t act aggressive towards people he doesn’t know, and he’s fairly obedient. He’s bigger than a normal hellhound, and stronger. This is just a guess, but I think he’s a pure bred.”

“Huh,” you say. “Cool. So I can like, take him to dog shows and stuff, right?”

Cassandra laughs.

“But seriously, how do I take care of him?” you say, a little worried. “He’s like, something you see in a zoo. I couldn’t even keep a goldfish alive for more than a week.” You don’t want Reeber to die because of negligence. “He’s like… I remembered his name somehow. I think he used to belong to my family.”

Cassandra looks at the dog for a moment. “Don’t worry about it. We’ve got a lot of books - I’ll figure it out,” she says. “Hellhounds are as resilient as they are strong, so as long as he gets enough meat and exercise, he should be just fine.”

“How do I train him? He only speaks weird demon,” you say.

“He’s a surprisingly quick learner,” Cass says. She gestures to the dog. “May I?”

You relinquish Reeber, and send him toward Cass.

The dog looks between the two of you.

“Reeber,” says Cassandra. “Sit.”

The hellhound complies, and watches Mrs. Hallow expectantly.

“He remembers what you told him earlier,” Cassandra says, rubbing Reeber’s neck. “Like I said. He’s really well trained already. He just needs to learn a few more words.”

“It’s a miracle that the Infernus hunting you had a hound that was more loyal to you than it was to him,” says Isaac. “I don’t know how Reeber wound up with him, but I’m glad it turned out okay.”
>>
Reeber dutifully returns to your side when the Hallows take their eyes off of him. “No complaints here,” you say, patting your dog on the shoulder. You decide to change the subject to something else you were thinking about. “So like, I guess Verwelken-slash-other demon hellborn are less rare than pure Verwelken hellborn?”

Isaac nods. “You’re right,” he says, “but mixes with Verwelkens never have Verwelken traits. And they’re still prone to insanity.”

You think that over. “Wait. So like, I shouldn’t even have shadow powers unless I’m down-the-middle Verwelken?”

“Not as far as I understand,” says Isaac. A puzzled look comes over him. “You see, in hellborn with more than one nature in them, all the sides fight it out and strongest side eventually predominates, and that’s the side whose strongest traits manifest. Verwelken traits are almost always passive. Or recessive, maybe. Any other demon type drowns them out when they predominate. If you have more types, that means it’s even less likely for your Verwelken traits to express themselves.”

Something sticks out to you about his explanation. “You said… almost always passive. So they’re not always passive.”

You notice Cassandra is being very, very quiet through all this.
>>
>>32306808

“Well, the one time they’re not passive,” Isaac says, “is with Infernus. Infernus, being the most aggressive type, nearly always predominates in a mix. But when you add Infernus blood to something with Verwelken blood, something changes. The Verwelken side goes active. It tries to predominate too.”

“So?” you ask. “What happens when it predominates then?”

“A Verwelken type can’t predominate,” answers Isaac, “and when it’s active, nothing else can, either.”

That doesn’t sound too bad, you think. “So like, inside me, it’s like a fight club all the time?” That’s kind of cool, you think.

Isaac keeps a very careful, very neutral expression when he continues. “Yes and no. You see, before predomination, all the different types in the mix grow stronger until one comes out the strongest and takes over,” he says. “But. Without predomination, they don’t stop.”

“You mean…” you say, trying to picture the implications, “what do you mean?”

“When the Infernus side doesn’t stop progressing,” he says, “eventually the body can’t contain it anymore.”

You’re having trouble seeing what he’s getting at. “So they hulk out?”

“Well,” he says slowly, “you know how Inferni have fire powers?”

“…yeah?”

“They explode.”

Is there, like, a release for the pressure? Could I postpone it somehow?

Maybe, if I'm mentally stable, I'm also physically stable too and I won't blow up?
>>
>>32306945
Point.

But I'm talking about some of the choices in the past. Unless we want Sierra to hulk out, we should always strive to not give her undue stress
>>
>>32306969
Well we shouldn't go above the threshold that lowers her sanity, definitely. But sometimes the best options (in combat) involve stress and we shouldn't pass those up categorically.
>>
>>32306969
>>32307036
Hulk means we're just as dangerous to allies as enemies, and uses a pure fight/flight instinct to do the job. Unless we're in a locked room we can't realistically get out of, we may not be able to go toe-to-toe with enemies nastier then us in Hulk form.

Thus is is a last-ditch effort to do something, not something to be relied upon.
>>
Did I understand this right? If we keep picking powers from all "trees", that'll increase the chances of us exploding in a fiery blaze - and not in a cool way.

Or did I get it wrong?
>>

I think you got it wrong. Isaac is talking about what happens to infernus and verwelken mixes. It is obvious Sierra is different somehow though.
>>
If you were drinking a beverage right now, this would be the time to spit it all over the table. “WHAT?!” you yell, almost falling out of your chair. You’re going to explode?! You don’t want to explode! (+25 Stress: 49/100)

Isaac jumps out of his chair and holds his hands up. “Hold on, just listen for one more second.”

Cassandra leans over the table toward you, but shies short from actually touching you, thankfully enough. “It’s okay, stay with us, okay?”

You remember Reeber at your side. You look down at him, and he looks up at you with the eyes of a doe. You seize him and crush him toward you. He reverts to hellhound proportions at the excessive physical contact, but it just gives you more to hold on to. “Okay yeah, okay, fuck I’m just going to blow up, okay,” you say, barely keeping yourself from panicking. “This isn’t fucking okay!” (+15 Stress: 64/100)

Isaac grimaces. “Everything’s okay though, I’m sure if you were going to explode, you’d have done it by now!”
>>
>>32307197

Cassandra gives Isaac the ‘shut up now’ glare. She turns back to you, expression soft. “It always happens when they’re still young,” she says. “You’re already the oldest Verwelken-Infernus hybrid ever – and if you made it this far, I don’t see why you can’t make it the rest of the way,” she says, putting as much reassurance in her voice as possible.

You try to listen hard to her words, and take some of her calm for yourself. (-15 Stress: 49/100) “Okay,” you say, controlling your breathing. “Okay, okay,” you say. Somehow repeating the word makes it a little more true every time. You go to give Reeber another scratch behind the horns, but you find your hands are claws again. You squeeze your hands into fists until they revert back to normal, and proceed with your initial designs. (-2 Stress: 47/100) “So I’m not going to blow up,” you say carefully.

“We can’t say for-” Isaac begins, but his wife cuts him off.

“No, you’re not going to blow up,” says Cassandra.

You don’t like the tone in Isaac’s voice, so you try to concentrate on Cass’s. It does some to calm you. (-5 Stress: 42/100)

You take a moment to recompose yourself. “All right. From now on, I’m just going to assume that me exploding is not within the realm of possibility,” you say slowly. “No one contradicts that reasoning. Ever. Got it?”

“That’s okay,” says Cassandra.

You nod. It’ll have to do. (-10 Stress: 39/100) “So, because I’m never going to explode, that means I’ll be non-predominated forever, right?” you ask.

“That’s right,” says Isaac, sitting back down.

“So… what does that mean for me?”

“You told me you were picking up new abilities,” Isaac says. “I think what’s happening is what always happens before predomination. Your bloodlines are getting stronger, and they’re manifesting their traits, in you. So since none of them can predominate, they’ll keep getting stronger. “So,” you say. You your forehead for any odd bumps or protrusions. “I’m going to sprout horns any day now, aren’t I.”

“I wouldn’t bet against it,” says Isaac.

You recall the demonic visage of dogwalker. The thought brings a smile to your face. “Bitchin’, man.”

---

A week later, you do not have horns, but you are completely erased of all marks and injuries from your freak out at abandoned Cost Co and your run in with dogwalker’s hellhounds, and you do, dare you say it, feel slightly stronger than before.

HP: 14/14
PP: 14/14
Stress: 9/100

Isaac has had you and Rowan under careful supervision, as well as Harvey. Every day you’ve had someone to pick you up or take you to school. Today, you can see as you come out to the curb, it’s Borislav in his ancient red pickup. His English is pretty terrible, but he’s been picking up words pretty quick, especially when he’s driving you and Rowan around. You’ve managed to teach him a lot of useful slang in a relatively short period of time. You still don’t know much about him, other than he’s loud and talks a lot.
>>
>>32308186

Reeber circles around in the back of the truck. He’s adjusted pretty well to suburban life. He goes through a big bag of dog food every couple days, but remains mild mannered enough to go indoors. He’s kind of a lazy animal, and will lay in the same spot for hours on end until bidden to come do something. Isaac has taken to bringing him out with him when he goes out and does… whatever it is he does all day, so your dog’s been getting lots of exercise.

Rowan’s recently got rid of all the ridiculous cripple getup, though she’s still not quite at one hundred percent. The run in with dogwalker did something to toughen her up though, you suspect. (Rowan: 11/16)

The two of you don’t go anywhere without packing heat. Though you doubt the legality of it, in addition to the switchblade in your back pocket, you have a handgun in your backpack. You keep the magazine out of it to exercise proper gun safety, but you’re still bringing a flipping firearm to high school. Luckily, associating with Rowan & Co means no one suspects you of anything shifty, so you’re not afraid of getting your stuff searched by suspicious teachers or anybody else, really.

Despite yourself, you find yourself falling into the pattern of high school life. Ro even has you doing the same homework she’s doing, now. You don’t get a lot of the concepts, but she doesn’t seem to mind spelling things out to you.
>>
>>32308200

“What is up, girls,” says Borislav from the truck, waving at you and Rowan as you walk up. The words are stilted and over pronounced, but he doesn’t take a million years to say the phrase like he used to.

“Yo Borya,” you say, holding up a hand in greeting. Borislav insisted that you and Ro start calling him Borya. Whatever.

“Hopefully dad gets over his overprotective streak soon, because it’s getting on my nerves,” says Ro. “He’s kept us cooped up for days.” She rubs the palm of her hand against her forehead. “This is plain embarrassing.”

You see other students pointing at the truck and its scruffy driver and giggling to themselves.

10PP for 1HP is a terrible ratio. Those 10PP are much more useful when spend on abilities during a fight. And out of a fight, we can already heal in just a few days.

That's what Active Regen ends up being. One use of it costs an hour's worth of PP. Active Regen is the 'chill out and heal between fights' ability.

>10PP for 1HP is a terrible ratio. Those 10PP are much more useful when spend on abilities during a fight. And out of a fight, we can already heal in just a few days.
No, we can't. It's only 2 HP per day normally. This would let us heal from 1 HP to full in a single day. It's an out-of-fight healing ability, and it's awesome.

Well, to be fair, we don't normally have a bunch of people that we can elisurely touch to get PP while fighting. And when it comes to enemies, if we get to touch them, instead of wasting time on leeching PP it is almost always more effective to just disable them while we have the chance.

Think about it. The first stage of regeneration allows us to hea from 1 HP to full in one day. That means going from "as close to dieing as we can possibly get" to "perfectly healthy" in 24 hours.

How could you not want that? And that is only first level, it only gets better from there.
>>
Having been pretty much living by your own wits for the last few months, the careful pampering atmosphere of the Hallow household has started to get you a little bit antsy. You like doing things. You like doing crazy things, even. Your wish for a boring day has been granted. Now your wish is for something fun.

“I feel you there,” you say. “Oh. Except for Boris. Boris is cool, other people can shut up. Right Borya?”

“Yes!” Boris says, slamming his hands down on the steering wheel, though he likely didn’t understand much of what you said. You’ve got him trained pretty well.

You pull open the truck door and scramble over the seats into the cramped back seats. You lay out and checking your text messages. Vikrama doesn’t know how to end conversations, you have discovered. You’re still trying to keep up with a discussion that was started last Friday at lunchtime about the ethics of vigilantism. She keeps making all kinds of lame points against beating up people and killing them when the police are too wussy to do it themselves.

Rowan takes seat in the front, and before she can get the door closed, you’re speeding off. “We should do something dangerous,” you say suddenly.
>>

Rowan laughs. “What?”

“Like. I don’t know. Let’s call the guys and go do something tonight. We’ve got demons after us yeah? So, doing anything is dangerous. Let’s do it.”

“Let’s do dangerous,” says Borya, kind of mimicking what you said.

“What did you have in mind?” asks Rowan, ignoring the driver. “Me and Vik were thinking about doing Haight Street sometime, but I don’t know if shopping’s your thing.”

You think about it for a second.

Oh, long after. I remember quite clearly when it happened, because Blatant Fetish Quest was only a few threads old and its QM fangirled out and told everyone to go check out Ellington's new quest.
>>
>>32308969
But honestly, look at the people who play quests. I'm surprised Hellborn even took off since it has no basis in a preexisting IP, isn't generic fantasy, isn't a smut quest or is based on fetishes, and doesn't have a painfully generic MC everyone self inserts into.(Honestly its rare to find a quest with a male mc that has an actual human personality)

A lot of quests that are trying to have somewhat original settings and characters tend to fizzle out almost immediately. Its awful how low /tg/ has fallen.

That about sums it up. The only quests I follow at the moment are this one and Banished quest.

And even with this quest I was very skeptical at first, given we have a female protag. We all know /tg/ can't play females.
>>
>>32309091
These bullshit whining post never get old.
>>
>>32308484
I remember it, but it's unlikely to be used by itself mid-combat (if you're in that position, why not claw their throat out) and it feels excessively repetitive to say "and also Dark Heart if you can" with any melee suggestion.

It may work better if it was assumed that we'd try to use it automatically during any direct melee combat, making it a matter of balancing the risk of close-in fighting against the chance of stealing some power for our flashier abilities if we make good contact. It'd also slightly reward stealthy play by making successful power-leaching more likely as they won't be resisting.

How goes putting together a skill tree?

also THIS IS NOT SATURDAY
>>
>>32309139
HMQ is based on a preexisting IP. It's a good quest, but it isn't a totally original concept.

Its MC and antagonists are great, though.
>>
>>32309091
Yeah, I agree.
I know this is unfair but the main reason why I try to steer away from new quests is because I'm afraid that I'll really get into them but they would have such low popularity that they'll die. This happened to me several times. Sometimes I was pretty much the only one following and participating a quest.

I'm really glad that Languid has put the foot down and declared that Sierra is straight. Not that I don't like lesbos, but once the Quest MC becomes one, at least half of the quest will revovle around that shit
>>
>>32309208
Nothing is original, though. Lamia quest is based on shitty rpg tropes and how they don't really work, and it was amazing.

>Original settings dying off
This sucks. I'm usually pretty careful about quest choices, though, so I don't go to that many. I can see how it would be a thing, though.

“Anything’s better than rotting in the house,” you say. “Start making calls - this is happening.”

Luckily for you, neither Cassandra nor Isaac is home when you arrive. Vikrama is on route with Baron in tow. You feel kind of bad that he’s about to get dragged around for the whole night, but nobody forced him to come. It’s not even your plan. You take no responsibility for the consequences of your decisions.

You and Rowan are good to go with time to spare. Rowan looks… well, like Rowan. It’d be hard to miss her in her Captain America jacket. You, meanwhile, are in your newish red hoodie, a jacket, and a pair of jeans. You don’t stand out too much, you think.

Harvey walks down the stairs and stops at the sight of both of you. A car horn beeps outside – that would be Vikrama. Harvey looks at the two of you, raises an eyebrow, and then walks by and into the kitchen to start throwing together a sandwich.

“Harv won’t say anything, “ says Rowan, pulling her shoes on. “Let’s go, car’s here.”

Reeber trots over and sits next to you, and looks up.

I think its the fault of QM inexperience that let being a lesbo revolve around the quest, Gobble seemed to handle the relationship stuff in moderation pretty well last I checked. But any who I don't think the /u/boats are bad, its just that when the QMs start to solely cater to them that makes it bad, as if they desperately don't want to lose players. Its the same with quests that have straight girl MCs, there's at least a couple of quests right now that focus entirely too much on romancing the cute boys.

I believe letting the players attempt pursue romance is fine if there's room for it in the story, but many make the mistake of letting them focus on it way too much. Which in turn makes another camp of militant anti-romance anons

But I digress, we should move this to QTG

You get the whole I want to rebel thing she’s all about, but you’d like to decrease the odds of Rowan’s parents freaking out. “You should leave a note,” you say. “I don’t want Isaac McDemonbane appearing over my shoulder thinking we’re in danger or something.”

Rowan runs a hand through her hair. “I guess you’re right,” she says. She goes into the kitchen and begins writing something on a sticky note.

In the meantime, you grab the leash off the doorframe and slip it over Reeber’s neck. While there is no chance you’d actually be able to control him if he ran off on you, you think people might get weirded out by a dog running around without a leash.

Rowan comes back, and notices that you’re taking your dog with you. “Really?” she asks.

“Hey,” you say, “just because we’re being dangerous doesn’t mean we’re being stupid.”

“Eh. There’s a point,” she says. She opens the door and heads out. You follow not far behind.
>>
>>32309749

A blue VW Beetle awaits on the curb. When you approach, the passenger side door opens, and Baron unfolds himself from the front seat. Tall guy. Small car. He lowers the seat and steps back to allow Rowan entrance.

“I didn’t know you had a dog,” says Baron, surprised.

You allow Reeber to jump in before you. “I didn’t know either,” you reply. You then get in yourself.

“Reeber’s cool, I can testify on the dog’s behalf,” says Rowan from inside.

Everyone packs in.

“You’re bringing a dog?” Vikrama asks, twisting around to look at Reeber. He calmly settles across your lap. “Sierra, it’s a beautiful creature, but this isn’t his home.”

“When you really love something, you have to let it go,” Baron advises.

Baron is prone to saying nonsensical BS, but that takes the cakes. “But… that doesn’t even make sense,” you say, narrowing your eyes. “And furthermore, shut up. Reeber’s an emotional security companion dog. I can take him wherever I damn well please, doctor’s orders.”

Baron turns and gives you a condescending look. “And that doctor… was it you?”

Vikrama keys the engine and you start driving off.

You snort at Baron’s comment. “By the way, since nobody called it. Slug bug blue.” You punch him in the back of the shoulder. Taking your frustration out on others through physical violence is what you're all about. (-2 Stress: 7/100)

He leans forward a bit so as to be out of easy range of further blows, and rubs his shoulder. “Taboo,” he says, smirking.

“Uh oh,” says Rowan. “She didn’t know, you have to give her a break.”

Vikrama jerks the steering wheel suddenly, shaking everybody in the car as a kind of punishment for Rowan’s comment. “Nothing can appease taboo except a proper offering from the interloper!” she says, adopting a voice that reminds you of the guy from Indian Jones and the Temple of Evil.

You have a way out before you even know what’s going on. “As a foreign national, I refuse to acknowledge your jurisdiction over me,” you say.

Everyone laughs, though Vikrama seems put out. “Oh come on. That’s no fun and you know it.”

“Fine,” you say, leaning back against the chair. “I don’t want to know, but you obviously want to talk about it, so just go ahead and tell me what the heck you’re talking about.”

“It’s an inside joke,” says Rowan. “It’s for when you hit somebody as a joke.”

Baron looks back at you with a sly grin. “You hit somebody. You mean it as a joke. Or do you? It’s all about how hard you hit.”

Vikrama nods sagely. “If you hit too hard, the receiving party knows to respond with anger. But if you only exert comical force, everybody knows it’s okay. That’s how it’s worked in my family for generations”

Baron sits up normally and holds up an inquiring finger, taking over the tale. “But,” he continues, his voice low and disquieting, “what happens when somebody hits somebody else hard enough for it not to be a joke, but not hard enough for it to be an act of aggression? How are you supposed to deal with the resultant confusion? If you hit back, and they were joking, then you have become the villain. If you let it slide, you’ve possibly left yourself open to attack, and future abuse. How does one distinguish friend from foe in such a hypothetical situation?” He pauses for dramatic effect. “The answer, as we’ve mutually elected, is ‘taboo.’”
>>
>>32310845
“You’ve put a lot of thought into this, haven’t you,” you say flatly. “So now I’m supposed to do something stupid, right? Before you say take your shirt off or something, I can say that’s not happening tonight.”

Rowan and Vikrama laugh, while Baron is left looking mildly uncomfortable. “Nevertheless,” he says, forging onward through social awkwardness, “a debt must be paid. Two paths lie before you – on the right hand lies an apology unfeigned, of such obnoxious loquaciousness that none would dare question your remorse for such an unspeakable and confounding act.”

You wait for him to continue. He doesn’t. Nobody says anything, in fact. You then realize they’re waiting for you to ask what the second thing is. “Okay, that’s obviously the cop out option. What’s the other thing?” you ask.

Baron’s reply comes instantaneously. “Say something embarrassing about yourself! Five-four-three-two-one go!” he shouts.

Silence follows, as everyone leans in to listen to your reply.

“Just do the apology one,” Rowan whispers to you.

And here you were thinking this was going to be hard. “Easy,” you say. “I hang out with you guys.”

Baron laughs.

Vikrama scoffs. “Hey!”

Rowan goes on the defensive. “What? That’s not embarrassing.”

Seeing his friends lack of approval, Baron turns his laugh into a choking cough. “Yeah, what they said, those things,” he says. His tone of ironic agreement doesn’t go far in appeasing the girls, though.

You can’t take their objections seriously, however. So many goofballs in one VW Beetle. “Welp, you asked for it,” you say. You would indeed be embarrassed to be seen with them, if you cared about anybody’s opinion other than your own. You can tell, though, that they actually do want something you’re embarrassed about out of you, and will be disappointed if you don’t live up to it.
>>
>>32311485
“Okay,” you say, giving a sigh. “I didn’t know you were supposed to be able to see individual leaves until I got glasses, one week ago.”

Rowan snickers to herself, but tries to suppress it for your sake.

Vikrama cheers. “Aha, there we go!”

“Pfftwhat?” laughs Baron. “Is this real life?”

“Stranger things have happened,” you point out. You fold your arms over you and your dog. Maybe sharing embarrassing factoids about yourself wasn’t the best plan. (+3 Stress: 12/100)

“You can go ahead and add seeing-eye dog to your doctor’s note, Doctor…” Baron trails off. “Huh. Hey Sierra, what’s your last name?”

>Blood. Heh. Had you going for a second. Dr. Blood sounds badass though, admit it.
