The Inquisitor's visit has left you a jittery wreck, but it's also focused your mind. You need to resolve this carefully if you want to get out of this without being branded a heretic. It seems they haven't identified Cailllou yet, all they know is that he's a young mage looking for unusual items. You're the one he's buying them from, and the Inquisitor suspects as much. And you've got until tomorrow morning to decide how to respond to his questions. This is too much for one little girl to have to deal with, you think to yourself.

And that's before worrying about the billionaire girl styling herself as your rival demanding your dungeon diving assistance tomorrow, or the horrific debt you're in. Or even the mafia turf war between Terme and another group who've moved in that's apparently escalating in the streets night after night.

Ugh. You collapse onto the counter with a groan. Still, the day goes on. Sort of. It's only late afternoon, you still have a little time left. A rustling from the back room tells you Euria is up and about, doing something.

>Leave the store open?
>Find someone to make plans?
>Go into town somewhere?
>>

But heresy is Delicious?

>Leave the store open?

We need the money...
>>
>>32257295
Contact Charme, via the guild of necessary so we can dungeon tomorrow. Louie is missing and contacting caillou for dungeon diving now would be awful.
>>
>>32257329
More like we need to get Alouette and the inquisition off our backs so we can make money. With a bit of luck, ties to Alouette could actually help protect us, but only if we decide on a definite course of action with regard to Caillou.

Sell him out to the inquisition to gain favor with the church?
Warn him and cut all further contact?
Try to hide him, bringing him in our debt but also risking being found out and burned?
>>
>Leave the store open?

Hopefully we;l get actual customers for once.
>>
>>32257295
You decide to try contacting Charme. "Hey, Tear, I'm just gonna head over to the Adventurer's Guild, leave a message for Charme. Tell her we need her for a dungeon dive in the morning."

"You are aware the Guild will be closed tomorrow?"

You stop dead, "eh?"

"Tomorrow is a Sunday. The Guild is always closed on a Sunday, as a show of piety, since the Adventurers should be in Church or resting."

"O-oh. Wait, then why did Alouette say we should adventure in the morning!?"

Tear shrugs, a serious expression on her face. "I don't know. Perhaps we should find out."

>?
>>
>>32257410
I'd say we wait for Caillou to come in.

Going looking for him right after the Inquisition has dropped by would be considered extremely suspicous.

We can decide what to do with him when he comes in.

Remember, we need to appear to be a little innocent shopkeeper.
>>
>>32257443
Oh hey, guess she's upped her game since the cardboard box. Well, we can't take her to the dungeons then, the guild controls all entrances and we certainly don't have our own.

>>32257445
That what contacts are for. We send someone else, while also departing for wherever ourselves so the inquisitor follows us instead of the one meeting Caillou.
>>
>>32257443
That's perfectly fine, we can wait and see what Alouette is gonna pull. Just get Charme and Louie ready, have Euria find and relay a message to Caillou, and see if we can get one more party member.
>>
>>32257482
Louie has gone AWOL and the votes have not been in favor of looking for him. Though we could send Euria to find him perhaps, I think they met at some point?
>>
>>32257443
You ponder for a long few minutes on the best course of action. Whatever the case, you need to make contact with your friends. You step into the backroom and find Euria... bustling about the kitchen making food.

You push the unusual image aside and address her. "Euria! We've got trouble, I need you to find:

>Charme?
>Louie?
>Caillou?

and tell them I need to talk to them. While you're doing that, I'm going to be:

>Trying to find Louie?

>>
>>32257552
She finds Caillou but don't send him here. We find Charme.
>>
>>32257552
>>Caillou?
tell him:
a) Inquisitors are asking about him
b) get a change of clothes
c) offer a price for the whole set AND for covering for him, Euria gets 10% commission on whatever deal is struck.
d) do not contact us directly.

While we:

and either
>leave a coded message for Charme at the Guild, or let Tear do it.
>>

>Caillou?
>Trying to find Charme?
>>
>>32257578
I don't like it. Entrusting Euria of all people with information this sensitive? Not a good idea. Better to arrange a meeting somewhere inconspicuous and send someone we CAN trust (louie or charme) to that meeting. Again preferably while meeting someone else simultaneously, such as Alouette regarding the whole tomorrow being Sunday thing.
>>
>>32257623
that's why I suggested the commission, to distract her with greed, the old carrot-and-stick. Do we even have time to meet him within the day?
>>
>>32257552

>Charme

>Manning the store

Can't let them know anything's up, going straight to Caillou while we're under investigation is fucking retarded when our messenger lacks subtlety, and Charme knows how to stay out of sight.

"Find Caillou, he's a boy about my age, wears a silly robe. You can't miss him. Tell him I need to talk to him, so meet me behind... behind the warehouses in the south district in a few hours."
She nods fervently. "I'll get on it right away! O-only," she pauses, "the food will be ready in ten minutes."

You sigh, "don't worry, Tear can manage it." She nods acceptance and heads out the store. You take a moment to glance into the pot she'd been stirring. There' a black, goopy mess inside. You're not sure what it used to be, and thinking on it makes you shudder. You place the lid back on and head out the store yourself, ready to hunt for Charme.

She said that she's always around and if you really wanted to find her you would, right? You wander randomly down the street and hope Fate smiles on you.

You make it a few score yards down the street before something you really didn't want to see appears before you: a band of rough-looking men, all wearing suits but with shirts hanging out, ties loose or missing, only a handful wearing blazers and more importantly, what you're pretty sure are hidden weapons all over them. They're laughing raucously to each other, making a few crude jokes. And they're walking right at you!

You're about to duck into a side alley when one of the leading ruffian spots you. "Oi oi, what we got 'ere? Lovely little thing, ain't ya? What you doin' out this time o' night?" He grins toothily at you.

"I'm looking for my fairy, she's called Tear. Have you seen her? I really need her help." You add a beaming smile to your explanation. The men pause, looking to each other.

"Ey, Tear is a Terme bitch, right?" "Yeah, right-hand or so I heard." "Damn, so this chick's important then?" "Hell yeah." They turn to look at you once again, eyes taking on a distinctly hungry look.

You break into a sprint moments before they do, diving into a back-alley and running as fast as your legs can carry you. The men are barreling down the alley after you, and you think they might catch up..!

"Saaaaave meeeee!" you bellow as you keep running, making for the open road ahead of you. Even before you've finished clearing the group you hear the first of your pursuers exit the alley and crash into one of the gangers. In moments, the two groups recognize each other as enemies and set about beating each other to death in a brutal street brawl. You ignore their plight and flee into the darkening city.

Finally, you run out of breath and slow to a walk, just as the Sun finishes dropping below the horizon. You're now deep in the city, close to the town square and the pub. You suppose Charme could be there, or she could be wandering the streets.
You've still got a few hours, but you're still going to need to find Charme fast if you want this business concluded before meeting Caillou.

The pub is just a short walk away from here, so you head that way. Hopefully, she'll be around. If not, you guess you can try the unattended beer trick again.
The Sun has completely set by the time you reach the pub, with the scenery now lit by the moon in the clear sky above you. A chill breeze catches you off-guard, whipping the heat from your exposed thighs and reminding you that even summer nights can get awful cold when there's not much cloud cover like today.

You step into the building, and are overcome by the heat and noise of so many bodies packed into such a small room. Every table is full of the men of the city, talking and laughing with each other, the beer flowing freely. You look around as best you can, but with such a huge crowd, you can't make out the obvious figure of Charme. You do, however, note the Guild Master sitting at a table with nothing but a full mug of ale for company.

Since you're already here, and since you doubt the viability of that thing Euria created as food, you might as well order up something to eat while you wait. You toss an order for something edible to the barman, as well as a mug of beer for Charme. The fact that he's never once questioned a minor buying alcohol should probably concern you, but you can't bring yourself to care. You think him and take the mug, trying to find somewhere to sit and wait for your meal.

Your ass has barely touched the seat when Charme materializes across from you, one hand already reaching for the mug you haven't let go of yet. "Heyyy Reshette! How's goin'?" She hiccups lightly, smiling warmly at you through lidded, almost closed eyes.

"How do you even do that?" you ask her as she tries to wrap her fingers around yours, still around the mug. You pull you hand back quickly, keeping the beer just out of her reach.

"I told you, if you need me, I'll be around!" She gives you a languid smile, and reaches a hand for the mug again.

"Whatever, listen. I need you to focus. One of my customers might be about to get me in trouble. I need a sharp and professional agent to meet him for me." Her eyes open, gleaming.

"An' you... thought'f me? I'm, I'm, *hic* I'm..." she doesn't finish the thought, instead swinging a grapple aimed at your hand still keeping the mug out of her reach.

"Louie's been missing all day, so I need your help."

She raises an eyebrow at you. "Mishing? Nah, nah he'sh, he'sh not mi-mishing. But I'm all you really need, r-right?" She slumps forward onto the table as she meets your gaze.

I never was a fan of the "atmosphere" mechanic having light/dark. Cheap/Expensive has a minor effect, but what really matters in this quest is your window display versus what you're selling and what your reputation is.

I.e. offering expensive goods in the window will attract rich customers, who would then be disappointed by the poor stock on offer. At the same time, a reputation for selling treasures when you have none on offer increases suspicions that you're acting as a front for more nefarious businesses.
>>
>>32259030
>>Try to sober her up?
Tell her she's all we need and more (with our cutest smile), but that we need her to be sober. Pay her a meal and a coffee (if it existw), and ask the barman if he doesn't have anything that diminishes the alcohol's effects (he must know one trick or two to make drunkards lucide enough).

"No, no more for you," you tell her as you hand the mug to the men on the table behind you. They cheer for you while Charme cries out in dismay. You wave to the barmaid and ask her for some water. Then you turn to Charme again. "What do you mean about Louie? You know where he's been?"

"Shuuur," she slurs at you. "Tha' lil' girl sponsh- *hic* -sherd him. He'sh bin in th' Hall o' Trials."

"Wait, you mean for the Adventurer's Guild?"

"Yup. He'sh gettin' a licence, like a real 'Venturer!"

This news hits you hard, but there's nothing you can do about it for now. You file the information away and instead focus on getting this girl sober.

After almost a full hour, she could walk on her own two feet again in an upright fashion. She could almost talk without slurring, too. Another half hour after that, you've managed to walk her most of the way to the southern district where she's supposed to meet Caillou for you. "You owe me for this," she grumbles at you. "Alright," you brief Charme, "I need you to take a message to Caillou. He should be waiting for you behind the warehouses ahead. Tell him the Inquisition is after him. They already asked me if I've sold to him. If he wants what I've got so far, he needs to meet on top of the cheap clothes store, tonight at midnight. Tell him to bring thirty thousand. Got that?" Charme nods, all traces of jovial attitude gone from her features at the mention of the Inquisition.

You dismiss her, and she sets off into the darkness. Once she's out of your sight you turn for home, intent on making sure to erase any evidence of your contact with Caillou. You still haven't decided how you're going to handle talking to the Inquisitor, but you guess that can wait for now.

When you get back, you find Euria waiting for you outside the store. "Heyhey, I found the kid and gave him the message. He said he'd be there to meet you right away."

"Thanks. One more thing, how would you feel about making a risky sale? I'll cut you in for 10% of the profit." When her eyes gleam with excitement, you take that as your cue to fill her in. A few minutes later, you're sending her off again with Caillou's order and a prayer that nothing else will go wrong tonight.

So Alouette stole Louie. What do you guys think, try to get him back or screw him for going behind our back?
>>
>>32259994

Eh, she might be trying to get back at Louie too, or deny us access of him for illegal trips. It might even work to our advantage if Louie sees delicate operations that Alouette is carrying out, if we can win him back to our side (assuming that he's ever left it).

But the best thing to do if he has truly forsaken us might be a guilt trip. Eventually he'll think about our situation with the huge mountainous debt and turning his back on us. At his core, he's a honest and simple young man, so we'll just do that so he will feel absurdly guilty and ashamed at what he's done.
>>
>>32260107
>>32259994
I'd say we fire him, give him what he earned, and stop having contact with him.

Louie's a nice kid, but that mean he's still a kid. He's not made for our shady business. His soul would just get crushed if he kept working with us.
>>
>>32260107
Are you suggesting Louie is loyal enough that he'd accept her sponsorship just to spy on her for someone who treats him like an animal? That'd be quite a unique combination of smart and stupid crammed into a single move. Honestly, it seems we just pushed him too far and even if we got him back we'd be getting him back without the quality of being willing to take the shit we treat him to. And that was always his main quality so I'm not sure he'd even be worth getting back. Alouette has already spoiled him.
>>
>>32260280
Might be worthwhile keeping him in the dark, so if it all goes south, we at least have someone of decent standing saying "She couldnt have done this!"

>>
>>32260341
The thought that only an ignorant fool would vouch for your character is really soulcrushingly depressing.
>>
>>32260425
like everything else in this quest wasn't...
>>
>>32260425
Yes. Yes it is, We should stop stabbing people and/or start making friends with "respectable" individuals. Ones who we might be able to bribe to say we were elsewhere at the time or to accidentally leave jail keys unattended or
>>
>>32260489
We'll do plenty of friend later on. Right now we need to survive our foes.

>>32260405
That what I'm talking about. the kid is idealistic and naive. We don't need that kind of things on our employees. I say we just fire him, give him his wages with a little bonus for good luck, and send him away. I don't wish him bad things, just that he stop being in our legs.

The bed we bought for him could then be used to reward our more realistic and useful employees. Like the scammer-turned-spankslave.

>>32260425
Well, we're not a good enough liar to fool the cunning people yet, and not useful enough to get people not fooled to vouch for us. We'll get there.

>>32259902
QM, could you tell us the reputation of our shop? And the reaction of the customers to the "display vs content" part, please?

>QM, could you tell us the reputation of our shop? And the reaction of the customers to the "display vs content" part, please?
This information I generally try to pass through the narrative. There was some discontent earlier on, but your reshuffle of the window has balanced the situation.
As for your reputation thus far... well, let's just say the Inquisitor had reasons to suspect you as the one Merchant on the block who might try supplying Caillou.
>>
>>32261206
We need to increase our reputation. We need to be biggering our shop

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpgUQYARIsw
>>
>>32261206
The question is what we actually want our reputation to be. Clean up the place and we should have less problems with church or law enforcement, but we might also lose certain parts of our clientele.
>>
>>32261506

If we spend some cash investing in the store, we can front a legitimate store while doing some under-the-table deals elsewhere. Kind of like mob-owned casinos, and stuff.

The biggest problem with that is getting the money to expand.
>>
>>32261587
What if we invest what Caillou payed for his items? It'll be a good investment, and perhaps we'll act less like jerk if we live in a better environment.
>>
>>32261587
We have actually earned a good deal of money. Probably not enough for what you have in mind, but we probably can start making such investments.
>>
>>32261699
>>32261587
Wait, I had a better idea: we keep the shop small and proper, so people don't wonder from where come all this money, but we open a bar/casino/illegal store in an hidden place (maybe there is cave galleries or sewers underneath the shop) and so we can invest our ill-gained money without people getting suspicious. And that'll keep the IRS at large
>>
>>32261823
Invest it in what? A nicer sewer? I don't really follow your plan here.
>>
>>32261955
We create an illegal gambling den (or another similar establishment), so people don't wonder how a little shop with not that many custommers suddenly expand. Then, as we continue to win money, we invest in features to make the gambling den more attractive.
>>
>>32262424
Okay so you're suggesting that we spend all our money on an illegal establishment, effectively making the store pointless since we're not investing in it anyway. That's a complete shift in direction to something honestly even more risky, less profitable, and definitely less interesting. Or am I misunderstanding you?
>>
>>32262844
I suppose you are misunderstanding me a little. We didn't earn our money legitimately, so if we show people we earned a lot of money, by upgrading our store, for exemple, someone will understand we're doing illegal stuff (remember: Al Capone got in jail for taxe evasion). So, we take the illegaly gained money and invest it in someting illegal that will allow us to earn money, but without people knowing about it. We upgrade the store with legitimately earned money, so we keep the facade of being upstanding citizen.

Keep in mind people are getting suspicious (the Inquisitor, for exemple)
>>
>>32263260
I believe the main factor is the goods we've been stocking and even showing off. Though the killings probably didn't help either. If we want to clean up the act, the key would be to be a lot more discrete. Loot from the dungeons, Tear's cheap goods, Tear apparently being known to be connected to Terme and us as well, associating with seedy types. If we can deal with those problems, having some nice things won't be such a problem I believe.
>>
>>32263579
Do we want to really clean up our act? Or would we be pretending? If we pretend, I think we'd be way more discrete if we invested our ill-gained money in illegale, discrete things.
>>
Rolled 2

We should spice the place up. Make everything 1000% cuter!
>>
>>32263705
that would require a lot of money and make some customers run
>>
>>32263696
My advice would be to go almost completely legit and reserving the illegal stuff for very exclusive items and customers. If the store is actually thriving legally, nobody will be able to tell that the extra bit came from other sources.
>>
>>32263982
If they don't like cute, then why should we even bother with them. Screw those people, we're fucking adorable.
>>
>>32264246
Her name is Euria, not adorable.
>>
>>32264020

This is probably the safest thing to do now. Tear can probably make arrangements for special clientele for all that sort of stuff.

I know you like to mess with your players, Kaleun, and I know you think you're good at it. But you're provoking the /u/-boat now. And the /u/-boat can sink any quest. Be careful.

>Rub fairy's wings
>Actively encourage tsundere rival
>Spent a lot of time with sexy, little-dressed women
>Take pleasure in spanking one of said sexy women after strapping after to a table
>Sleep on the same bed as one of said sexy women, after she actively expressed her interrest in doing the lewd with us
>Not an active lesbian

Sure, Kaleun, Sure.

You'd be better off admitting or denying it, dude. You know at least some of us will keep pushing until we monopolise all those girl's stock market, if you catch my drift.
>>
>>32266192

So she's a dormant lesbian?
>>
>>32266712
>stock market
I guess it's hard to find a more morally bankrupt yet socially acceptable job than speculating on the stock market, so it's in character...
>>
>>32266886
it was an euphemism, anon. like "we're going to put some coins in all those girls' piggy banks"
>>
>>32267570
You wanna give them handouts? That's not Recette's style anon, and she needs the money.

>>32267859
How about "we'll restructurate their enterprise"?

>>32267942
Now we're talking. Can we make them profitable?

They'll certainly experience an increase in liquidity.
>>
>>32268000
M-maybe they can even have good solvency.

Or perhaps go the other way and we seize their assets?
>>
>>32268083
the important thing is to remember is that at least 51% of their shares must always be in your hands.

Man, imagine if somewhere there is a communist version of Recette.

Not more so than capitalist Recette.
>>
>>32268633
There is. You've never heard of her because she's living a perfectly happy life with her not-dead father because the means of production are in the hands of the people rather than corrupt and greedy men like Terme.

>>32260257

He can rat us out to the Inquisitors, he's seen far too much for us to let him go to our rivals.

Either he's brought back to the fold or he needs to be got, street justice style
>>
>>32269038
He did tons of illegal stuff with us (including murder). If we fall, he fall. And he's the one trying to be an official adventurer. He'll keep quiet
>>
>>32269187

Maybe, but he was an accessory and would certainly avoid most of the punishment if he rats us out. That is the way of snitches.

The most convenient choice would be to bring him back into the fold and make him get in so deep that he has no way out.

I dislike letting him free with our competitor, there's too many loose ends and too much uncontrollable risk. I'm still inclined to lean on him to rejoin us, or get rid of him. Either by leaving the city or through shanking him.
>>
>>32266192
>Recette is not an active lesbian.
Dude, you clearly baiting at this point. Cut it out.
